Intro
Sweep Picking probable one of the greatest hallmarks of Shredtastic abilities is sweep picking. Probable the hardest techniques to master due to the fact you need both picking and fretting hands in sync. More than likely as I have read many of you wish to sweep pick but are confused by all the linguae used to describe it, and yes I believe most of the time they over complicate what to me is a fairly simple thing . So I will simplify it for you and hopeful build you to the point were you to can be using sweeps in your solo and getting hot chick and having peers felt numb.

History of Sweep Picking

Ordinally became popular in 1984 when a one very young Yngwie Malmsteen explode on to the scene making all other guitar players “want to use the guitars for coffee tables”. And for the most part this is true until this point EVH and Randy Rhoads were they premier guitar players and people were struggling to comprehend what the heck these guys were playing (note EVH made Tapping very popular but until the Shred became big people taught he was just playing really really fast using wide intervals,
many even speculated that he was playing the Synth in conjunction with the guitar).
Sweep picking since then has been the gauge on ability (how good are you?) . Many a Masterful players have come since Yngwie demonstrating absolutely unbielable licks via of this technique such as Shawn Lane, Michael Angelo Batio, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Bumblefoot, Buckethead, Marty friedman, Jason Becker , ME and many many more.

The motion - 1

With your fretting hand mute as the strings then slowly like a strum descend from your third string down to your high E. As such;

------------X----------------
----------X------------------
--------X--------------------

Try this a couple time remember to not let the notes bleed together they are to be played as Separates.

Remember as you descend you should lift your finger of the fret note and use a slight muting with your right hand to dampen the note so it doesn’t make to much noise.

Here is a Open A shape Arpeggio (used by both Yngwie & Batio)

In the Style of “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott Lesson

In the Style of “Dimebag” Darrell Abbot

Intro

To remember Dimebag Darrell I have decide to construct a lesson to help people understand how he played so that we may better appreciate him as the awesome player he was. In the lesson I hope that players will get a better concept on Dime’s playing and ultimately will make it easier to play his songs. Thank you! RIP DIME

History

Darrell was born August 20, 1966 and his father being involved in recording music was surround by it as a youngster. He started playing guitar at 11, and progressively became one of Texas best guitarist winning his first competition when he was only 14 years old playing Eruption note for note . This was the first but not the last but more importantly he had one a Dean ML which in the future would change hands but come back to him as the Dimebolt . At the Age of 18 , Darrell was banned from any competition having win almost all of them in Texas. In 1981 Pantera was formed , the 80’s were not very nice to Pantera but it endured and released there first album in 1983
“Metal Magic” which feature three of the Original members of Pantera ; Rex Brown ,
Darrell, and Vinnie . In 1990 being signed on at Atlantic records the group with the new addition of Phil Anselmo released “Cowboys from Hell” the the newest pinnacle in Metal History . For over a decade Metal was kept alive by Pantera’s music but like all good things it must come to a end and in 2003 Pantera broke up. But Darrell didn’t hesitate he quickly formed Damgeplan combing with his brother Vinne. We don’t know what could have been for on December 8,2004 Darrell Abbotts life was cut tragically short along with a few others and the band bodyguard by shot. As to this day we still don’t understand why nor will be probable ever all that we know is that a hero in musically history was so crudely stolen from us , there will never be another Dimebag Darrell , RIP DIME !

Probable one of the most famous licks in all Metal History ; the intro to ‘cowboys from hell” goes as follows:
(starts from low E)
Play x3
--12-15-12-15----15----15---------------12-15-12-15---------15-12-----------
-------------------12----12----13h14-----------------------12h13--------------------
-------------------------------------------12------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
u u u u d u d u d d u u u u d u d

As in a previous lesson this and most of Dimebag licks are strongly based off a the E Pentatonic scale

Pentatonic Minor
Root note - E

|-----------------------------------------------------12-15------
|----------------------------------------12-(14)-15-------------
|---------------------------------12-14--------------------------
|--------------------------12-14---------------------------------
|-------------12-(13)-14----------------------------------------
|-----12-15------------------------------------------------------

He use Pentatonic once again in his solo here is the intro ;

-11-12-15-x2--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------11-12-15-x2----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------11-12-15-x2-----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------11-12-15-x2------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------11-12-15-x2-------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------11-12-15bu--------

He plays each of these twice to produce a double up sound , I personally instead of bend on the last note of the lick use my whammy bar to get the note to go sharp and there give the bend sound .

Stretch pentatonic

Dime is natorius for using stretch pentatonic licks in his solo’s , which give a great wide interval sound he has either used alternate picking or legato to execute them here is a couple exercept from his solo’s :

From the ‘cowboy from hell’ Solo :

-12-14-17p14p12-x3-12h15h19-20p15p12---------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------20p15p12-------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------20p15p12-----------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------20p15p12---------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 2 4 2 1 x3 1 2 4 --------------------> Throughout

Many have trouble with this part because of the wide interval but with proper finger placement hands big or small it becomes possible. My thumb when I execute this lick as right behind the 16th fret on the back on the neck.

Legato lick from ‘Domination’ Solo
(Starts from low E)
--12h15h18----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------12h15h18---------18-12h15h18----------------------------------------------------
------------------------------12h15-------------------12h15h18---------18-12h15h18---------
------------------------------------------------------------------------12h15------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------12h15h18---------------------------
---------------12h15h18---------------12h15h18p15p12------------------------------------------
--12h15h18--------------12h15h18------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using the same finger pattern as ‘cowboy from hell’ the only difference is that it is legato mean you only pick once this allows you to constraint on the motion of the lick.

Neoclassical Dimebag ?!

I know what your thinking but yes Dime did use a Neoclassical shred technique in some on leads none more apparent than in the ‘Domination’ Solo. This technique is know as a ‘Pedal tone’ basically you return to the same point during the lick or passage . Probable part of his Rhoads worship ;

Domination Solo intro (3:17)
-13p12-13-16p13p12-13p12----12-13p12----12------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------15--------------15----15p13p12--13p12---12-----------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------14--------14---13---------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dime construct this lick off the 13th fret and comes back to it over and over again.

then at the end of the solo he constantly use them ;

--20-16-15-16-20-16-15----
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
------------------------------------- x4
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------

--19-16-15-16-19-16-15-16-
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
-------------------------------------- x4
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------

-20 16 15 16 20 15 16 15---
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
------------------------------------- x4
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------

Even the fast picking lick half trough the solo has strong neoclassical roots which probable touch to Dime’s early Pantera glam days Smile

E Harmonic - 9th Pattern

|------------------------------------------------------8-11-12------
|---------------------------------------------10-12-----------------
|--------------------------------8--9-11-12-------------------------
|-------------------------9-10---------------------------------------
|--------------9-10-12----------------------------------------------
|-----11-12---------------------------------------------------------

This is what the lick look like with the notes added in ;

|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|----------------------------------------------------------12-(14) (15------------------
|------------------------------------------(11)-12-(14)---------------------------------
|--------------------------10-(12)-(14)--------------------------------------------------
|------------------9-10-12----------------------------------------------------------------
|-----11-12(13)---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope you see Mr.Abbott as a more classically trained musician know Smile

Dime’s Tapping

To me his tapping was heavily evolved off on EVH type. Here a Lick from "Cemetery Gates” sort of a triplet with a tap :

-7h9h10-t12-10p9p7h9h10h12/14t16-t14-10-14p12p10-
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here a Lick from ‘Hot for teacher’ :
Starts from high E
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------T12-8p7p5----------------------------
--------------------------------T12-8p7p5-------------------------------------------
-----------------T12-8p7p5----------------------------------------------------------
--T12-8p7p5-------------------------------------------------------------------------

And Finally who better than Dime to teach his own Dime scream technique ;

Conclusion

Hopefully this will give you some more insight on Dimes playing and how innovating he truly was . His impact on metal is undeniable . RIP Dime ! My Hero !

Hey I'm new to the forums and this is my first post. I have one Dean guitar that I love to death. Smile

I got my guitar from a guitar shop that my dads friend owned and ran. We were at a gig one night and It was in the field in front of the shop and I went inside the shop just to play on some of the guitars and instantly my eye caught this guitar and I was in love with this guitar.
Took 4 months to get it but I had some money put down to reserve it and finally got it. Here's some pictures.

It's a Dean Sarasota Hollow body but I don't know if it's a nwe brand or vintage or what because Dean doesnt make this guitar anymore.

Sorry the second picture is blurry.

Guitar Video Lessons
by Soganatsu on Sun Dec 11, 2005 5:59 am
I have alot of friends that want to learn how to play guitar from me but I just don't have the time to teach them all, I've got work to do and school >.<...

I was wondering if there was a link to something that had free guitar videos for beginners, or someone could help make guitar lesson videos, (e.g. a list of what to cover in order or make some videos and of course make sure you label it as your own work and post a link or something so people can view it and learn aswell and my friends can spend their time learning instead of taking me away from work)

If there are no videos online that are free then...

What my friends need to learn are the real basics, how to take care of a guitar and how to tune, then how to play a couple easy songs and how to read tabs. (easy songs as in Nirvana or along those lines of simple)

I'm not trying to make money off this i'm just trying to give me some extra time to goto my job so my boss doesnt give me "The Talk" again and I can get all my school work done. That's why I highly suggest putting your logo name everything you want and need to identifey it's your own work on it so I have no proof that it's mine or anybody elses. And nobody will try and say i'm a con artist or whatever it is. This is a Non-Profit project, just good-will to teach some people guitar.

If nobody wants to help that's perfectly alright, I was just looking for extra help in making these videos for my buddies. And i'll appreciate any help I can get.

Sorry if this post makes no sense, My english sucks sometimes...
Can anyone help me plz...

Just finished a discussion on the above site that will help with the big picture of chord progressions.

I assume you already know the Roman numbering system for chords:
C Scale............. = C-D-E---F-G-A--B-----C
Key structure .....= I--ii-iii--IV-V-vi-viidim--I
Key of C (chords).=C Dm Em F G Am Bmdim C
