Neat Guitar Tricks...
by Saradilc on Wed Aug 10, 2005 3:39 am
Hey guys.. New to the forumn.

I've been playing guitar for a couple years now (I'm 15) and eventually drifted into Metal and am now heavily influenced by Slayer, Pantera, Metallica, Opeth, etc... \m/

Anyways, I own a B.C. Rich Kerry King Wartribe 1, a Washburn WI 64-DL, and have just ordered a bumble bee slime razorback (as you can see in my sig) So I am beyond happy Very Happy

I have played on my friends Kramer a lot, and learned that neat little Dime squeal (pull off, dunk the floyd rose, then do a natural harmonic hammer on and raise the floyd) and found it so cool to add into songs...

I was just wondering if you guys would share any other guitar tricks you know, or a better way to do the squeal/enhance it.. Anythin guys.. ways to abuse feedback and stuff, etc...

|-----12-14-15--------------------------------------------------------------

Probable one of the most popular person That uses these scales is my Hero Yngwie Malmsteen , Like him or not is imprint on music is unmistakable . His Innovation on the guitar sent a whole generation of guitarist to copy his amazing licks and sweeps. Here is a Lick from his song “Far beyond the Sun” this song has inspired me ever since I picked up the Guitar and it hasn’t yet.

Tempo: Fast Laughing
13h14p13p10--------------------------------------------------------------
------------------14-12-10-----------------------------------------------------
------------------------------13-11-10-------------------------------------------

Pentatonic Minor
Root note - E

|-----------------------------------------------------12-15------
|----------------------------------------12-(14)-15-------------
|---------------------------------12-14--------------------------
|--------------------------12-14---------------------------------
|-------------12-(13)-14----------------------------------------
|-----12-15------------------------------------------------------

I added some notes to this scale to make it more interesting to play and listen to , and If you a Pantera fan you should have pick right up on a Familiar sound . Dimebag was big on using Pentatonic but he used them ingenious ways , this is why the intro riff to “Cowboys From Hell” will serve as your first as your first Mini-Lesson on Pick Exercises .

Tempo 116
Pm----------------------------------------------->
Riff A x3
-----------------------------------------------------

Dorian

|-------------------------------------11-12-14------------------------------
|-------------------------11-12-14------------------------------------------
|-----------------12-14------------------------------------------------------
|-----12-14-15--------------------------------------------------------------

This Scale is probable one of my most favorite it sounds so good I use the Dorian Scale a lot it my lead work , this scale is fast guitar playing heaven , so I suggest you try it out .

Lydian
Root note - E

1st Pattern
|---------------------------------------------0--2--4------
|---------------------------------------2--4---------------
|------------------------------1--3--4---------------------
|---------------------1--2--4------------------------------
|------------1--2--4---------------------------------------

|-------------------------11-13-14--------------------------------------
|-------------11-13-14--------------------------------------------------
|-----12-14--------------------------------------------------------------

This is a very odd scalar shape used a lot by Master Steve Vai who has a great control over the weird sounds that can produce by this scale . Here is a Lick from his new album Real Illusion on the song
“K’m pee du Wee” when I first heard this lick I was marveled by the fact that something so simple could be re-worked (like a Scale) and spat out to sound terrific.

Tempo: 150 *note not sweep pick , saving that for later Razz *
-----------------------18-13-------------------------------------------------
--------------------16-------16---------16/-\11p9---------------------------
-------------15-15-------------15---15------------11p9---------------------

Chromatic
Root note - E
12-th pattern

------------------------------------------------12-13-14-15--------------------
-----------------------------11-12-13-14-15-----------------------------------
----------11-12-13-14-15------------------------------------------------------
11-12-13-14-15-----------------------------------------------------------------
12-13-14-15----------------------------------------------------------------------
*note these are not chords I didn't have enough space

I already know what your thinking ugh Chromatic what purpose do they serve other than warming up you hands for practice or a gig. But Chromatic are very important , they serve as a good transition to a solo they also serve as a quick way to ascended with blistering alternate picking . One of my most favorite song contains mostly all chromatic and that song is “Bite the Mosquito” which to me is John Petrucci of Dream Theater way of Reworking the great “Flight of the Bumblebee” by Korsakov. So with that explained here is a Lick from John Petrucci “Bite the Mosquito” .

Tempo 172

Lastly we will turn Japanese a little , I’m rather Fond of Oriental Scales most for the Ascending Properties rather than it Descending . I became very interested after I heard Perpetual Burn by Jason Becker his use of this almost Foreign to western culture scale work was amazing and innovative . But when you mention Jason Becker it almost seem proper to mention his counter part in Cacophony Mr. Marty Friedman most know him from his amazing Lead work with Dave Mustaine But, I remember for the maverick and he Jason Becker are for making Oriental scales awesome and for playing them in a Metal context for the first time. Here a Lick I found that elaborates on my point :

Tempo : free time
-------------------------------------------13-15-17-20t--------
------------------------------------13-15------------------------
-------------------------10-12-14-------------------------------
------------------10-12------------------------------------------

Could use some help with playing
by Panties on Wed Aug 17, 2005 9:11 pm
Well, I'm not exactly a newbie to guitar playing... but I play with a style really close to Metallica's... mostly powerchords.

I have decided that I finally have enough experience to move on to different styles of playing. Here are things I have tried, but need help with.

Sweep Picking
Chords
Scales

For sweep picking, I'm trying to play Blue Oyster Cult's - Don't Fear The Reaper.

For more sweeping (I think that's what it is in here anyway) and chords, I'm practicing Pantera - Floods. I have a bit of a problem with this song because It's hard for my pinky to stretch that far for a chord. I can do it, but I don't think I have enough practice to be able to play it easily yet.

I heard someone talking about the "Phyrgian" (or something close) scale for soloing. Can someone tab it out or link me directly? I improvise my solos, but I have no idea where the hell I'm going when I play, so it doesn't sound very good.

I think that once I learn these styles a little better, I'll consider myself a better guitarist.

Thanks alot for the help.

anybody here familiar with the blues or know any good sites to learn from? I'm really getting into it lately, and I'd like to learn to play some stuff and incorperate some blusey stuff into my writing.

Thanks
