the art of shredding
by unscarred on Tue Jan 02, 2007 2:40 am
hello tony p here i need a few good lead chops to learn. i would consider myself to be an excellent rhythm guitar player. i have been bustin my balls for 15 years to do so. and i know some penatonic scales and penatonic scales with extensions and .some blues scales. and i feel my speed is up to par on those types of scales. i can run the neck in those scales up and down all day. up down from the first fret to like seventeen. BUT MAN IM READY TO SHRED. lead never really interested me untill about 2 years ago. and being pretty much self taught, ( i had a teacher for like 8 weeks or so). and coming from a family of guitar players who dont shred . im f#$&ing ready. anybody with any suggestions would be great to get me started. i can read tab and play most of my favorite bands leads. but some of dime bags shyt is crazy. the domination solo took me like 2 days to learn where he was going and 2 weeks to get my speed up to par. i think that if i had some scales to practice on that maybe i could get faster at learning on getting some of my bands shyt down. dime is truly my favorite guitar player 2nd would be james hetfield . but i get tired of just playing rhythm i want to do both. well i hope one of you guys can put me in the right direction.

How do you Incorporate Solo's into your song?
by JpBonez on Mon Jan 08, 2007 11:48 pm
Hey, I was just wanting to know how all of you incorporate a solo into your song without making it seemed forced, or just random. What I do in some of hte songs ive written is just take the basic beat from the rhythym and feed off of that.... So if im doing some power coords I listen to their rhythym, and either use notes that compliment that, or ones that sounds similar but then move in another direction... I dont know, it can be hard to explain.

Recommend some scales.
by TomaS on Fri Jan 12, 2007 10:03 pm
Hey guys.
I've been tinkering away with the Harmonic Minor for a while now and im wanting to explore some different scales so i dont get bored of it. So my question; Which scales have the same sorta erie, dark feeling like the Harmonic Minor? I make lots of Lamb Of God-ish riffs so if anyone knows which scale they use id be grateful. Smile

Sore wrists, guitar induced??
by atarilovesyou on Tue Jan 23, 2007 8:05 pm
Hi, I know that there's folks here who have experienced some guitar related wrist and arm problems.

I haven't gotten that far, but my wrist is getting quite sore (worst today), especially when I wake up. Funny thing, when I'm actually playing it's not so bad.

What's the risks? Am I ignoring something I shouldn't? Again, I don't 'really' hurt when I'm playing, but in the morning it's achy and stiff, and if I bend it forward at the wrist, I can feel it ache. My left shoulder 'falls asleep' almost every time I practice for over an hour.

Am I being foolish for not slowing down in my practice schedule? In a way I wonder if this is just a price to pay to practice as much as I do, my schedule is this:

Over the last month (I've had some time on my hands!) I'm averaging 2 and a half hours everyday (I log everything, time it with a stopwatch, really meticulous...hahaha!).

I warm up 20 minutes, then do modes for 30 min, alterate picking exercises at different speeds for 1 hr and 15 minutes, and then scales for another 35 minutes. (I do take a few minutes here and there to stretch the arm, wrist, shoulder between exercises)

Like I said, it's the first time in months where I'm doing this EVERY day, and it's taken a month to get to where the wrist is beginning to really concern me. But I've been seeing real improvements in my playing, hence the reason I don't want to change my schedule.

Any help guys?...sorry bout the log-ass post!!
