theory gurus...why is it

..that sometimes when I'm playing a simple three chord progression, in this case lets say simple power chords...A, F, and G.

When i think theoretically, I think, hmmm...it's in A minor, so I can do some A minor stuff, some A minor pentatonic...and if I wanna swing it thru into major over these chords for a few bars, I can always go do some C major stuff...it still sounds like minor, but the chords are what's giving it the feel..just another way for me to visualize some stuff.

...but WHY does playing a D major shape sound GOOD to me during those chords??....I dont' wanna think that I'm hearing tones that I think 'work' when really it's just a figment of my imagination (kinda like how tone deaf people can 'hear no wrong')...I'd think that for something in A minor, if I wanted to hit the major I'd go to the relative, C major, not D Major.

Yes, I know, play what you think sounds good but I'd like to at least know if there's a theory reason why it 'works'...or am I just being tone deaf??...lol

Title:
Modes, Arpeggios and Scales


All modes use the same spacings or intervals.
The only thing that changes is the primary key scale and
the roots (starting/stopping notes).
If you know the G Major scale positions,
then use those to play all the modes by moving intervals
up or down the neck to fit the primary scale. Then
pick the correct starting point of the scale (roots)

This will be helpfull:
---------------------
whole step = 2 frets
half step = 1 fret
# = up 1 fret or half step
Flat= down 1 fret or half step
Example: (B & C) and (E & F) are a half step apart
Every thing else is a whole step apart

Ionian = interval 1 (root) normal major scale
Dorian = interval 2 (2nd) soulful and bluesy (minor)
Phrygian = interval 3 (3rd) Spanish sounding (minor)
Lydian = interval 4 (4th) spacey unresolved sound
Mixolydian = interval 5 (5th) funky sound
Aeolian = interval 6 (6th) dark, sad and mysterious (relative minor)
Locrian = interval 7 (7th) Spanish sounding but darker and unresolved/spacey

To bring out the tonal colors of these modes,
you need to play them over the mode/key chord.
Or if you are playing solo, try to work the
mode chord in with the scale notes.

mixolydian example:

A mixolydian = D Major Scale - 5th (root is A, the 5th interval)
B mixolydian = E
C mixolydian = F
D mixolydian = G
E mixolydian = A
F mixolydian = B flat
G mixolydian = C

Play this forwards and backwards alternating the pick up and down on every other note.
Next, play the scale in different keys up the neck. (for example: the key of C - will move everything up 3 frets)
Also, make sure you know the names of the notes on the 6-string E from the 1st fret to the 12th fret.

The Major Pentatonic Scale

As a guitar player all you need to know is that you can play in two different positions on the fret board in the same song and get two
entirely different sets of sounds using the same standard pentatonic scale and even the same riffs.
All you have to do is move the pattern down three frets and see how it sounds.

So what is to stop you from combining the two? Nothing, not one thing except the song itself.
It's not really complicated It's just two simple pentatonic scales sitting side by side.

At 2:01 he starts playing that lick from floods, does anyone have accurate tabs for that, I've tried looking for Floods tabs but none of the one's I've looked at sound or look right compared to that he's playing.
Problem with pull offs

Say if I pull off the 5th fret to the open string on the G string I also seem to knick the b string aswell, just seeing if I've been doin it wrong the whole time I've been playing guitar or if anyone has had the same problem.

Hey guys. I want some exercises that will SERIOUSLY test my picking ability. I want something so disgustingly difficult that it will make the solos I WANT to play seem easy so that they become second nature to me. And by solos I want to play I mean stuff like the solos on the CFH record, or the Master of Puppets record, or Rust In Peace, etc. etc. So something that will make those seem easy in comparison would be nice.

I've been playing for 2 and a half years and for a very LONG time I've had a serious mental block for original material. Well a month ago I learned the Hungarian Minor and this tune was born. There's an interlude I wrote but I haven't written enough of the song to put it somewhere so it just kinda starts from nowhere. Anyway, let me know what you guys think so far:

I hate metronomes, the click click click drives me nuts.
So in my web travels i was very happy to come across this

A free drum machine yay no more click click click.
Its actually stupidly easy to use, and the web site has some usefull drum samples and user made loops.
But the big thing i liked was, it lets you stream your drum pattern as a wav file. So if unlike me you dont practice infront of your pc,(read that as scrolling through this forum more than playing hehe)
You can throw them onto a CD.
Its helped my playing, coz now i can actually feel the groove when rehersing a song, instead of that mechanicalness a metronome seems to produce in your playing.
So give it a try,hehe run through those pentatonic licks to a bossa nova beat or practice those modes as a samba

I’m trying to get more into proper lead playing and im currently working through the Troy Stetina Speed mechanics book which is actually pretty good but it doesn’t have much info on good solo construction teqniques or scale selection over rhythm parts ect. I don’t really want to get too bogged down in theory at the moment as I am just really trying to develop my speed and timing but is there any other good books out there that anyone could recommend. I would say my style is a sort of Spanish Phrygian slurry Iommi type of sound with the lead over easier rhythm parts sort of discordant.
