Dual guitar exercises
by Dischord on Thu Aug 09, 2007 7:21 pm
Here is my favorite piece of the metal pie. I like learning 2 separate guitar parts for the same piece of music. Anyone know where there are exercises which teach the art of harmonizing/melodicizing?
Playing guitar: where do you start?!?!
by Anonymous on Fri Aug 10, 2007 9:05 am
I'm lucky enough to have a pretty decent guitar (Dean Dimebag Darrell FBD Tribute ML). I've had it for about a year now and it has been gathering dust.

I REALLY want to play guitar and play it well but I just feel overwhelmed by the scope of things. There are so many songs, artists, chords, styles, techniques and equiptment. It has gotten to the point where I can't even listen to the music I love without aching to play it myself.

I used to take one-on-one guitar tuition (£30 and hour) and I was allowed to bring in a song that I wanted to learn to play (IMDH - Megadeth) but he said that first I must learn scales and notation. So I went home and learnt a couple of scales, played them back to him and he said: "Now play any notes within that scale and it will sound good". I looked at him, confused, so he took my fingers and placed them on the fretboard and I plucked the strngs. It did sound good but I didn't understand how it worked at all. They seemed to be different from the notes I learned for the scale. So I quit the lessons.

Is learning scales and notation the right way to start or do you just go right into playing the songs you like. I do not want to be in a band or anything, it's just for me.

Whenever I ask anybody or read about how you begin everyone seems to have started playing guitar when they were like 10 years old or something. Is 18 too late to start playing?

I am more interested in playing rhythm guitar.

Trouble with holding the pick
by Vulgar_Display_Of_Power on Sun Aug 12, 2007 9:58 am
I have always held my pick on the flat surface of my index finger and the flat surface of my thumb but Ive noticed that is is hard for me to do certain techniques. I have seen heaps of ways the pick is held but I just wanna know whats the right way? It sounds like a very stupid question, I know, but any help would be appreciated.

Trivium - Tread The Floods Intro

I need help with one tiny note, I think you might notice it, and I don't know what note to hit,

If you can't find the note I'm playing wrong then I'll try to explain it.

Cheers

James.

what's the difference? also, is this AIC song in a scale? is the solo in a specific key?

i really love this riff, the vibe it puts out, and if there is a scale it fits into i'd love to learn it. sorry if this is very noobish thing to ask, but i know nothing about the technical side of music and i'm trying to learn a little more.

Here's the song
