Advice Needed :: Overdubbing
by Anonymous on Fri Feb 01, 2008 6:18 am
I've had this question in mind for quite some time now, but it was only recently that I figured out the right wording for it. I posted this on another forum, but it's been about a week now and still no one has even attempted to reply to it there. I'm hoping someone here could help.

Lately, I've been interested in doing some recording. Not only do I want to write my own material, but I also want to do some nice lead overdubs on some of my favorite songs.

My question is, what are some things that I should keep in mind while preparing this?

Key? Phrasing?

Thank you,

Shane

Understanding Scales and Intervals
by Ross on Fri Feb 08, 2008 7:02 pm
What do they mean with that? I know that I can make chords from scales, I could make chord progressions from scales like I ii iii IV V vi viidiminshed and I know that if I play a song in the key of A and have a chord progression like A D Fm A I would have to play the A major scale when I play the A chord and that I could switch and play the F minor scale on the Fm chord

I know how to build intervals and that the major scale contains
P1 M2 M3 P4 P5 M6 M7 and P8ve whilst the minor scale contains P1 M2 m3 P4 P5 m6 m7 P8ve
Sweeping question
by BFH on Sat Feb 09, 2008 4:16 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just started seriously trying to use sweeps in my playing
---------------------------------9h12p9-------------
------------------------------10------------10----------
--------------------------9-------------------9--------
---------------------11-------------------------11----
---------------12-----------------------------------12-
---------------------------------------------------------
_________4____3__1_2_1h4p1_2_1_3_4

I try to fret it like this
How would you fret this sweep? I try to bar both the 9's with my first finger but it doesn't really sound that clean.... Do you move your first finger while you are using your second to fret the 8 or does baring it like a chord work but you're supposed to roll it?

I guess it's just the last 9 10 9 part I don't know how to sweep. So bar or move your first finger is my question in a nut shell Razz

On the part of the solo that starts at 2:12, is that part played with every note picked out? or is that some kind of hammer-on, pull-off deal?
Broke my arm - need fret hand exercises
by bassmantim71 on Wed Feb 13, 2008 4:05 am

So I played my axe today with my fretting hand only..., if anyone can throw some excersizes or techniques my way, I'll appreciate.

I'm just doing hammer ons and pull offs right now, and I need some insperation. Evil or Very Mad

Pinky Popping?
by CFH_SDMF on Thu Feb 14, 2008 2:45 am
Hey guys i've been doing a lot of practice licks here lately and i've noticed that my pinky pop's when I use it a lot. Like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhGRzl5WFYg

I can actually do that exercise pretty fast but after doing it about 30 seconds straight my pinky starts to pop and it kinda hurts. Confused Has this happened to any of ya'll, does my pinky just need strengthening (sp?), or could it be arthritis?
I need some crazy alternate picking lick to learn
by Mingeeta on Thu Feb 14, 2008 5:28 pm
Just as the title says.

Basically I haven't learnt anything for maaany months and I think it's starting to show in some of my playing.

If anyone could give me a reference to a hard alt picking lick which I could snuggle down with for a couple of weeks then please tell me.
tuning....
by rabidchicken on Sat Feb 23, 2008 4:55 am
ok so i have a very strange way of tuning my guitar....
i tune it the same manner that one would normally tune their guitar in a E tuning sort of pattern...except for one big difference....but i dont know what key its tuned too....i dont want to ....i basically tune to my voice....so that when i sing...it covers the range at when i sing at ahahhahah is this normal?
like i dont follow music rules with concern to theory.
however i do change the tuning to follow the G tuning scheme when im playing blues stuff.
can someone give some pros or cons to doing this?
Some questions for any singer/songwriters
by Walk_From_Hell on Mon Feb 25, 2008 11:59 pm
I've recently been really excited and enthusiastic about trying to write music and sing.

But I've been having trouble with the volume of my voice singing when I try to sing along with some Ozzy. It's too quiet, what might the problem be? I'm thinking its because I have a kind of deep voice, and trying to stay in tune with the song is messing with my voice or something.

And also, the easiest way I've been writing riffs is I get a little melody in my head and I play some chords and try to mimic that on my guitar. Is this a reasonable way of writing...I think I'm actually getting somewhere with it, maybe thats all that matters.
Harmonic Slides
by Benthic_Pig on Wed Feb 27, 2008 7:30 pm
Hey peeps,

I was just wondering if someone could explain/show me how to so harmonic slides. I feel somewhat noobish - I can wail on leads, wail out harmonic screams easy enough but i cant seem to do something that sounds pretty simple...

I'm not sure if that is the correct term, but ive heard them being used by arious bands -- Ive heard its like a natural harmonic, but with a sorta pick slide going on.

A prominant example would be Gojira:

Check it out at 2:00. That riff has some prominant examples.

Is this just like a pick slide or what?
Im working on a new project.
by rabidchicken on Thu Feb 28, 2008 6:07 am
so this is my blog about my new cds that im working...
i probally will post a ton on this coming up....
so my next 2 albums...
which in turn will have a live and remix cd to follow the combined albums on whatever tracks are the most popular....
its pretty much broken up into 4 sections
a loud metal thrash section...5 songs (27mins)
an acoustic section....10 songs (35 mins)
and a industrial metal section...8 songs (39 mins)
i will at some point have to decide what songs go on what album...
but both albums are tied together.
what i love about the the acoustic section is i have spent a ton of time making songs that dont need production added to them and they sound great how they are and can be played anywhere anytime...

i have been using a recording program called ableton live with the vst suite.
so far it blows away what most drummers can do.
i have also discovered the line of native instrument vsts...
they are amazing...
i basically use guitar rig 3 when doing the guitars...it has some awesome sounds.
what any of the programs lack as far as editing goes... i use wavelab to beef up or take away or even in some cases clean up the tracks....

right now i have completed the acoustic section...
and let me just add that i am now i big big fan of recording acoustic music now.....just because the mixing process is soooooooooooo damn easy! like this is probally the first time i have recorded music and havent got completely sick of the song by the time it was all said and done.

working on the metal/thrash section...its sorta old schoolish metal...
not this iron madien meets late pantera stuff thats out swimming around...ahahhaha i have actually written 2 guitar solos which i do constantly have to practice i have found...its strange....like i can play the rythym stuff blindfolded full on drunk and never miss a note but this is abit more difficult sense im not really a lead guitar player and im almost completely anti-solos in songs...i just felt 2 of the songs should have solos...

the guitar gear im using basically is my marshall cab, line 6 head, bc riches and deans just mic-ed up and sent to a preamp then to the interface then the computer.

basically with this next albums following the 3 types of music styles....i want the listeners to feel that they have heard 3 completely different bands.

more later...
Southern Rock?
by CFH_SDMF on Thu Feb 28, 2008 8:32 pm
I've been thinking about picking one of these guitars up from Agile. I want a good southern rock guitar 'cause I love Skynyrd, but my DFH just doesn't work to good for it. Would these be good guitar for a good southern rock tone, or would a Strat work better? What pickups would be best P90's or humbuckers?

Guitar lesson
by Benthic_Pig on Fri Feb 29, 2008 3:25 pm
Hey,

Wow, I just gave my first guitar lesson. Its madness; you forget how hard it is to do aything on guitar...

I just taught this lass how to tune, how to barre chords, how to alternate pick and how to play the intro picking notes to "sanitarium" (she's into metal). I showed her the notes on the guitar and how each fret is essentially a note, changed via the strings. It's scary, because you forget to tell people these things, and when you try to explain something, you realise you've forgotten to explain the complicated bit! Smile

It's just mad that 5-6 years ago, I was in the same situation as her, not knowing how to tune or anything, and it's quite bizarre to try revisit that stage to give advice.

It feels pretty good to give lessons however, my next one is next friday.
