Theory, Scales, Ear Training... Advice needed!
Alright so I haven't been playing too long (Half a year) and I don't know a whole lot of theory, and scales. So I am going to see if you guys could help me out a little bit. Learning songs is going alright for me, but I really wanna focus on my theory, scales, improvising, and learning to play by ear.
Alright scales first. So thing is I really want to start memorizing my scales, mainly major, minor, pentatonics, and blues. But they're are just so many and I am not sure how I will be able to like memorize a scale completely. I know the pattern for the major scale is WWHWWWH/TTSTTTS, and one of my friends suggested using that pattern to memorize the major scale, say if I wanted to like master the C Major scale, he just told me to search with that pattern all over the fretboard to figure it out. He also said for me not to rush and try to memorize it all at once. Anyways I am not sure if this is the best way to memorize scales, anyone else know of a better way? Also modes, how do I memorize all of the modes for a certain scale, that seems like a whole lot more to do?
Improvising, so I know a couple scales and I try to improvise with them but I don't understand keys... people say something like Solo over the key of E! I have no clue whats that about, and also when I improvise on my own I usually end up playing the same like shapes, but thats probably just the lack of scale knowledge, right?
And another thing is Playing by ear, I've tried it and I swear its extremely hard for me to figure out, and some solos seem impossible. Does this just come in time or are their any specials things I have to learn before trying to play songs by ear.
When I first started guitar I thought it was going to be like just learn songs and jam with your friends. But once I heard of theory I was like like ...
Well I think this is all I have to ask right, now if its hard to understand my typing I apologize, I am not the best typer.
Any advice is appreciated.
Can someone give me a good explanation for sweep picking :\ the things i found on the net aren't helping me
Thanks in advance
Formites I'm having Vibrato issues...
I'm learning "still got the blues" by Gary Moore but I can't get the vibrato right, I have the spastic seizure hand going on. Any vibrato tricks or tips would be helpful.
Thanks ya'll
just curios, do you have to pay for them and how are they different from reg tabs
So I've been wanting to try and learn some new styles.
I've been really wanting to get into some SRV style blues. Maybe some pentatonic zakk blues s#%t.
I just don't know where to start.
Any ideas?
Ok, so i've decided to start learning more songs by ear, i've learned a few riffs but thats it. I was going to try to learn Disposable Heros and Leper Messiah. Can anyone tell me what key they are in and what scale(s) are used in them? I'm guessing Diposable hero's is in the key of E because it starts out with an open E string but i'm just making sure. So any help is really appreciated, and if anyone has any suggestions for easy songs to learn by ear please post them.
Thanks in advance.
