Korg G1
by blakk on Fri May 17, 2013 12:50 am
Does anyone have a picture of dime with a korg G1? The red pedal..supposedly Dime used one for the bit at the end of 'floods' and also for a lot of demos at that time...
I still have mine, bought in 1995 and used extensively until 2005! Even survived an on stage water fight. When I picked it up after the gig, water poured out of it, but the lights were still on and was working!
Awesome little pedal, I used to run it through my wah (left on), into a peavey renown 160w solid state combo with the speakers ripped out into marshall 4x12's and had a pretty good dime tone...

Kinda cool was just on the deanguitars.com site browsing around the USA section and if you click on "new for 2013 electrics" it lists a bunch at the bottom which don't have any pics or details yet... one of which being a USA Stealth. (again listed at the bottom) Can't wait to check it out, I'll feel like a total tool if its already out there and I just somehow missed it. lol

My trip to the Ground Zero for the 911 of Heavy Metal
by BustUp on Sun Apr 28, 2013 5:57 am
A place of tragedy now a place of remembrance.

A couple of months ago me and my wife took a trip down to Columbus. My wife wanted to visit her sister who had just bought a house down there. My plan for the day was to drop my wife off at her sister's, and then spend the day at the Columbus Guitar Show.

First off, I have to rant a little bit about the Columbus Guitar Show. It was a miserable experience. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There was a horrible selection of guitars and amps, and everything was way WAY overpriced. They only had one Dime guitar, and it was an imported bolt on. There were no high gain amps to be found anywhere, and the vast majority of the vendors and attendees there were old pricks. I took sh## from them more than a few times while I was there because they found out that I like distortion and high gain. I heard things like "distortion… son that's just plain noise" and "why do you want to play that noise?" and "you must be one of those guys who likes the noise channel." Needless to say I left the Columbus Guitar Show early and VERY pissed off.

On my way back to pick up my wife from her sister's I was driving according to my GPS. I happened to catch a glimpse of a large commercial property sign out the corner of my eye that struck a chord in my heart. Before I could make out what the sign said I had already past it. Thoughts started running through my head. Why do I know that sign? I have never been down this way before, so why would I recognize that sign? I looked down at my GPS, and I noticed that I was on Sinclair Road. A cold shiver ran down my spine as I realized why I recognized the sign. I thought to myself holy f@#@#$% sh##, I just passed the Alrosa Villa. Strangely enough it is located like 60 seconds from my sister in law's house.

Well today me and my wife took another trip to Columbus to see her sister, and I made a special stop at the Ground Zero for the 911 of Heavy Metal. When I stepped out of the car to walk around the site I really wasn't sure what I would find, or how I would end up feeling about the experience. In retrospect I am VERY glad I went. Dime related memories and messages left by fans are scattered all over the entire property. The place feels like one big memorial, and as a huge Dime fan I found the visit to be very cathartic. I actually wish I would have had more time to spend there looking around. I left with the opinion that the tragedy that occurred there was no one's fault, and especially not the venue's fault. Alrosa Villa has supported heavy music for 38 years, and the owner has often claimed that Alrosa Villa is the longest lasting rock club in America. I don't know about you, but any friend of heavy music is a friend of mine. I am extremely grateful that they never tore the place down, and I couldn't be happier that bands are still playing shows there. In my personal opinion, Dime seemed like the type of dude who would want bands to continue to ROCK THAT MOTHER#$%#$# OUT, and Dime lives on through every performance that takes place on that stage. I personally plan on attending a concert there very soon. (I even tried to convince my wife to stay an extra night so that I could go to the Mushroomhead show there tonight, but she unfortunately was not having it.) The Alrosa Villa is sacred ground for all Dime fans, and I hope the owner all the best for his business. May it become the heaviest venue in the nation!

Micro RG-100 Foot Switch
by www.DropD.net on Wed Apr 24, 2013 1:58 am
I took a typical Randall FS-5 footswitch and I removed the "Both" function. I then made the cable detachable with an ethernet jack on the end. Then I added a 1/4" jack that is electrically isolated from the 6 pin circuit. That allows you to switch your amp, and something else, in 1 button press. If you add in My "Tap Dance" pedal these two pieces replace my former product the "RG Looper". lastly, I made it tiny.

These are gonna sell for $50 plus shipping. This one is available for sale now, but does NOT have a detachable cable. Cable is 25' long. 1/4" plug shown for scale only.

Alpha switch, Neutrik Jack, Genuine NOS 6 pin connector, not a knockoff like most.

I haven't named it yet, but I'm almost done with my 1st effect pedal!
I call it for now the "Dimebox". It's an EXACT rg100es red channel preamp fed by a fixed, switchable MXR 6 Band eq in the frown shape, and I'm trying to have a gate inside as well. It will literally be Dimetone in a pedal, just add a PQ-4 and a power amp and speakers. More info in the next month or two....

Blue MXR 6 band - Mid Scoop Vs. Mid Boost
by BustUp on Fri Feb 22, 2013 1:41 am
According to the Guitar World article All-Time Campion by Bowcott (2008) Grady Champion stated the following regarding the blue MXR six-band and Dime's live tone. "He would push the mids at around 600 and 800[Hz] on his little MXR six-band EQ, and then he would kind of scoop them on his Furman PQ3 or PQ4."

According to Gill (2010) Vinnie Paul stated the following regarding Dime's recorded tone for Cowboys From Hell. "He ran one head straight, and the other he used an MXR graphic EQ to scoop the mids out." (The two heads Vinnie was referring to were two Randalls model RG100ES. However, sometimes the second amp was a tube amp like the Wizard.)

References
Bowcott, N. (2008, March). All-time champion. Guitar World, 74-80
Gill, C. (2010). The making of cowboys from hell. Pantera Special Collector's Edition. Publisher Unknown.
(I have no idea where this booklet was originally available, but it has Dean ads all over it. I purchased my copy off of eBay)

So according to the above quotes Dime would mid scoop for recording and mid boost for his live sound.

This makes sense to me due to the fact that you need mids to break through the mix if you are playing with a band. If you are playing alone, however, it sounds much better to scoop them. Recording is a lot like playing alone due to the fact that all instrument levels can be manipulated and controlled. This is my opinion. Any thoughts?

Randall RG owners; Questions
by www.DropD.net on Tue Feb 19, 2013 5:47 am
As many of you know I make replica foot switches for the Randall RG amps like the rg100es, rg100ht rg100xp, ect. Basically any randall that uses the 6 pin connector. www.championpedals.com

Image

As it stands, I hand wire it like the original. This gives you a channel select on the right switch, and both channels with the left. These pedals take a ton of time to make for little profit.

I was thinking of introducing a smaller, 1 button version that is simply a channel select only, with no "both" function. This thing can be phase 90 size or even micro size. By doing this, I can lower the cost of entry while being able to make a small profit.

The main question....
How many of you use the "both" function?

Image
On another note, I am not sure how many of you are aware of my "RG Looper". It's a randall foot switch, with a 2 channel 1 or the other true bypass looper built in. So for Dimebag fanatics like myself, we can put the mxr eq, furman eq and gate into an audio loop tied to the red channel on the amp. The green channel also has an audio loop tied to it, which allows you to use an effect on your clean tone of you desire. This allows you to toggle back and forth between a complete dirty sound and a complete clean sound with 1 button press. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jF5NIkdAUNQ

As everybody knows, when you juice these amps with these eq's, the clean channel becomes useless. The RG Looper changes this.

My point is this; I'm considering eliminating the RG Looper, as it is expensive to buy for such a niche product. Instead, what I'm considering doing is adding a 1/4" out on the NEW 1 button Randall foot switch that can then feed my "Tap Dance" pedal, which then gives you the same exact features and more of the RG Looper, but in a modular format. The benefits are you don't have an expensive niche product to sell if you move on from the Randall, you have a product (Tap Dance) that toggles audio loops that can be used with almost any amp with the right foot switch setup. (I may introduce a standard marshall style foot switch with an extra 1/4" out to facilitate controlling the Tap Dance as described above)

The purpose of the Fender and the Boogie?
by BustUp on Fri Feb 15, 2013 4:35 am
Strangely enough, whenever I was looking for the Wizard cab with the Richard logo on it in the Drag the Waters video, I couldn't help but notice the amps in the background that are pictured below. I am pretty sure they are the Mesa Boogie and Fender amps from the storage locker photos. Lastly, there is a randall rg100es on top of the randall/wizard full stack. You can see the right lower corner of it in the first picture.

Now my question is… Why would Dime pull out his Mesa Boogie and Fender for the Drag the Waters video? If he only used the tube amps for his clean tone, then why would he need them for the Drag the Waters video? There is no clean tone in that whole song. Was he mixing the tube amps with his dirty tone like he did in the studio with the Wizard amp? Or were they there just because the clean tone tube amps were just another part of his rig that went everywhere with him?

The one thing that is for certain is that he is definitely plugged into both the fender and the boogie for the video. My personal opinion is that he was blending tones.

Wizard From HELL
by BustUp on Fri Feb 15, 2013 2:54 am
According to Gill (2010) Vinnie Paul stated the following in an interview "Dime always loved the solid-state sound of those Randall amps, but in the studio he also needed to have a tube amp in there to get that crystal-clear distortion. Dime went through several different tube amps at the time. He had a Wizard amp that I know he used on Vulgar Display of Power, and I think he might have used it on Cowboys. He always blended just a little bit of tube amp in with his solid-state amps in the studio, but he never used tube amps live with Pantera.

References
Gill, C. (2010). The making of cowboys from hell. Pantera Special Collector's Edition. Publisher Unknown.
(I have no idea where this booklet was originally available, but it has Dean ads all over it. I purchased my copy off of eBay)

Additionally, I found this post on the Harmony Central forum under the thread Dimebag and Wizard Amps. The author of the post was thegame.

"Yes he used them (Metal series) mixed in with the Randalls on Trendkill. You can hear them a bit more on the two studio tracks from the live 101 CD.

His tone was a bit rounder, fuller and less razorblade like on those recordings so thats what the Wizard did.

BTW you can see a Wizard cab clearly in the Drag the Waters video, but its says "Richard" over the Wizard logo"

I found this picture to confirm that a Wizard cabinet can be seen in the Drag the Waters video with a fake Richard logo on it. The picture below confirms that it is a Wizard Metal Cabinet.

Image

wizard cab pic
Image

Lastly, some dude on the Harmony Central forum posted this under the same thread as stated before. I have no idea how much of it is true, but I thought it was worth posting. The author of the post was J2.

"On TGSTK Dime split the signal into a Wizard Metal, JCM 900, and his Randall in the studio.
I received this information from Rick (Wizard founder/owner) who said he visited the studio and saw/heard Dime's setup and said that the recording level for the Wizard was very low ie. the amp itself was recorded at a low volume. Maybe that's where you're getting the "low level" thing from, I've posted about this before. I really can't comment on how each amp was mixed on the final product except by what my own ears tell me.
The Wizard metal was running through the matching cab with greenbacks.
I can hear Dime's usual solid state sound in the mix coupled with a rounder, warmer tube amp sound, which is the Wizard.
One part that sounds like the raw Wizard Metal to me is the isolated main riff of War Nerve (where the bass guitar and overdubs drop out).
You can also hear it mixed in on Where You Come From.
I doubt the Wizard tracks were eq'd much since the Wizard doesn't need to be eq'd at all, which is why it's probably so easily recognizable, even when mixed in with other amps as in the case with Pantera.

I cannot hear the Wizard on Reinventing the Steel, and Dime didn't have the Wizard when I saw Pantera on TGSTK tour, and his sound was vastly different from the CD, generic and definately all solid state.

James Hetfield also recorded his Modern Classic at a low volume on Reload, but he went through a Marshall cab with v30s and eq'd it to the point where it's not as easily recognizable. James scooped it too much, the amp sounds much better in person, I really don't know why he did it. I have the feeling that the Wizard was more Bob Rock's idea, although I have heard a clip from the Reload tour where James is using a Wizard, and I saw Metallica live after that where James was using the Triaxis/Boogie Poweramp through Wizard MC cabs."
Can anyone give me an honest review about the Dime D100
by jgd on Mon Feb 11, 2013 10:04 am
Hi there,

Im kinda thinking of buying a Dime D100 head.
Just for fun.
Not to be my main, reliable band-amp.
Just out of fanboy-ship.

How are they?
Stores ofcourse say that its awesome and brutal and killer and blablabla.

And on the otherhand you read this too negative grumpy stuff, like "get your own tone", "Not USA: therefore crap", "nothing more than a RG100", "not REALLY Dime's tone"

Is it ok enough for shits & giggles?

On youtube, they seem to sound pretty awesome....?
And they seem to nail Dimes core, rythm tone pretty much?

Hope someone can give me some honest objective info on this.
Sound, material, reliability, volume etc.

Oh, and are they worth 390 dollar/247 pounds/290 euro's?

Thanx guys!

Hey there,

its fair to say that a lot of guys here try to get the Holy Grail of metal tones.
Also a lot of guys here have the right gear and some actually nailed Dime's tone, or are at least pretty darn close.

However, if you ask 2 different guys how they dial in, major differences! Thats kinda funny right? And interesting.

So, unless you feel its Top Secret, let's share settings!

Here it is.......1503 review!!!
by theanswer4 on Fri Feb 01, 2013 5:03 am
So when I first wanted to do this review I had my gear put away and only had out 1 guitar,1 cab, and 1 amp. Story has changed. I've unpacked the dime rack, the guitars, and the pedal board.
Here's what I own to compare it to as far as gear. I won't waste time explaining my rack and pedal board goodies.
Rg100
Db100
X2
Peavey classic 50 2x12

I owned before, but sold.
Krankenstein
XXX
Dual recto
Peavey classic 30 1x12 I think it's been awhile
Sadly no century 200 yet, nor have I played through one.

I also lived in Sioux Falls SD, and now Omaha NE, where the local stores don't stock anything but Marshall's, Mesa, peavey, and orange tube amps so I have plenty of hours going to these places trying out and jamming on those brands, probably an hour a week, sad I know but it's a good way to get out the house and krank it to 11 and jam out. Sadly I will ad that I have only found 1 brand spankin new dime guitar for sale in Omaha, at gc, very very sad.

One amp I really wish I had and will buy next or a century is a Tweaker 15 watt, WOW PLEASE GO TRY THESE, I put a MXR METAL FULL BORE in front, go try it, but I talked myself out of it. Plus the kid who was playing on it before me wanted his dad to buy it and would've cried if he didn't get it.

A quick summary
The e.q. Is massive, huge tonal options that are extremely useable. The mids can be real harsh and boxey, but since the e.q. is so workable, with time you can find anything you want.

Here's what I've ran through in order initially.
Dean 10000k, monster cable, 1503, and carvin 400 watt slant cab. In e flat standard
I will review this first.
Ch 1. By the best clean
Best clean channel by far In a solid state amp. My favorite clean is Hendrix(little wing)so you know what I like. This is close the the classic 50, but not as good as the xxx. It is darker though, you can definitely tell it doesn't have tube warm. When the bright switch isn't engaged it is a Huge difference. Its much more sparkly with the bright switch engaged. The e.q. Bottom end tends to be to much if left on the same setting one uses for the dirty. Well for me anyways I used a lot of bottom. Some might not and won't have this problem. The mids in the e.q. Really help the clean ch. They help makes it very full and thick with bright switch engaged, but can make it really boxey without the bright switch engaged. The reverb is good, an average one, I actually prefer the db100 reverb more, but I'm not a huge reverb guy, unless I'm wankin on the whammy, the foot switch option for the reverb is very nice . I would consider myself to have a heavy pick hand and the best thing about the clean is it will stay clean, no break up if you set the e.q. Right, and I mean no break up.

Ch2 THIS IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE SOLIDE STATE, RG, DB DIRTY CH, PERIOD. The tightness is amazing, the saturation is amazing, all around this ch is like having a pq built in, now I didn't say the 6 band. You can tell that they probably had a dime rig around when they made this. It is a little short on the bottom end as well, not by much though, I wish I still had a exciter, I think it would do wonders on this ch. I will explain more why later on. The scoop does it job extremely well. You can get a massive scoop or brong the mids back in for a lead. It is way better than the X2 , it not near as wide of a scoop, I always felt the X2 had way too wide of a scoop and the bass in the eq was centered way to low like around 50 hz which is way to low to cut through any mix. I feel the 1503 takes care of this problem. The bass boost is an awesome feature,it makes a huge difference, but I still wish I had my old exciter. High gain isn't the only thing this ch can do, I've noticed the only thing you can't get is a great fuzz sound, like Eric Johnson or Hendrix. But acdc, nirvana, Gary Moore you can get it. Oh and you need a gate if you want to max the gain, it's a necessity. I have not played a tube amp that is as crunchy as this as this. I will as add I have not seen or a heard tube amp with or without outboard gear that can get a dime tone, it's impossible. The ones I've owned and the ones I've played at stores, keep in mind I bring every piece of gear i own when I'm trying out new amps to buy, all they do is squeal like a pig, and the bottom end is just flab, no tightness. Just me, I'm sure others have their own opinions, remember always play what makes you happy, and don't waste money on gear that you can't stand to hear, I encourage everyone to find their own sound and style with whatever gear you love.

Ch3 FIRST, I'm not sure if I got the full manual but RANDALL SHOULDVE PUT a gain warning like the x2. IT WILL SQUEL!!They did however put a warning that this channel could severely damage your cab because of the massive bottom end. Haha DAMN THEY WERE RIGHT!!! My 200 watt cab couldnt even come close to handling this, speakers were poppin left and right, so I had to switch to the 400 watt, still popped, haha. This thing is a beast if your a gain freak this is for you. I can only imagine what a 7 or 8 string would sound like. With an x2 cab set i think this thing would be so nasy. I will add its voiced a little darker than ch 2. I doesn't have the clarity of ch2 , but you can tell they did it on purpose for more tonal options for the entire amp and for 7 and 8 stringers and the newer metal that is detuned. I don't have much to say about this ch but damn its awesome. I really wish ch 2 had ch 3 bottom end or ch 3 had ch 2 clarity. Guess i need to buy another and run 2 at the sametime. And you MUST HAVE A GATE FOR THIS, if you want to use it for high gain. I'm currently gonna use this ch as my rhythm and ch 2 as lead.

In conclusion
I'm pleasantly surprised by the clean ch. I think anyone that owns a tube amp should have a lot of respect for this amps clean ch ability.
As far as the dirties, if you want something other than metal you can get it. Th tonal options are truly endless, it's sad cuz I assume Randall wont be marketing this very hard unless as a high gain amp even then its not tube and cheap compared to most tube amp, so it will fade out, just like the original rg's did. The dirties for max gain are truly a work of art, period. The reverb, bass, and scoop functions simple put, all do their jobs extremely well. Reverb freaks probably won't find it extreme enough though. Randall got right with the new version by doing away with the reverb and adding a gate, another reason why they will market it as high gain and not an all around amp.

The BAD
Although the foot switch is nice, it's not midi and no memory. You will notice right away that you have to stop playing to engage the extra features I TRUELY WISH RANDALL WOULD'VE GAVE THIS MIDI, 1 cuz of the memory function for the extra button options, like the X2 and
2. I can't hook it up to my gcx so I'm not playing footsie with the Channel switcher, wah, tuner and the gcx board

P.s. I hooked it up to the rack afterwards with all the goodies in it. Enough said.
