New info on Dime's tone?
by Das Brutalheimmer on Wed May 02, 2012 6:07 pm
In the newest issue of Guitar World (Slipknot cover) there's an article about the recording on VDoP to commemorate the 20th anniversary. I found this section about Dime's guitar tone in relation to the mixer interesting, and I don't think I've seen it anywhere else before now:

One of the main reasons for working at Pantego was the studio's MCI console, which played a critical role in Dimebag's guitar tone and Vinnie's drum sound. "I've never found anything else that does what that MCI console did," Date says. "We sucked the 1.2kHz frequencies out of Dime's guitar tone with the MCI console's EQ, which was a defining element of his sound. Dime and Vinnie also loved the way the guitars sounded when you cranked the EQ at 10kHz. Dime used to call it 'the Fry'."
"Dime really loved the way that MCI console made his guitar sound," Vinnie confirms. "After we moved on and started doing other things, we took 10 modules out of that console and had a custom rack built so he could play his guitar through that preamp and get that sound every time we recorded."

That definitely adds a difficult layer to anybody trying to tone chase Pantera's albums.

Just wondering how everyone sets up their RG100ES/HT's and Century's. Here's usually how i set my rg100es for a gig:

Bass - 7.5
Mid - 4
Treble - 5
Presence - 7
Gain - 9
Master - 3

3 on the master is LOUD with these amps, i usually run it a bit lower at practice just to save everyones ears. I play it through a recto 4x12 cab, which is pretty dark and bass heavy, so i need that presence fairly high for some top end bite, and i use a Maxon od-808 (level cranked, drive at 0) to tighten up the lows and add a bit of gain. Guitars - Dean dimeslime (BL l500xl), Ibanez Iceman, LTD viper 400 (EMG's).

solo sound!!!
by chicco on Thu May 24, 2012 10:38 am
hi to all .... I read lots of posts about the sound of Dimebag, his amps, eq's, pickups (flipped or not), but no one who has never made a distinction between the sound of the crunch and lead sound, because they are definitely two different settings if you listen well on its rhythmic Dime used a devastating type of sound that we know very well, and we know how it was obtained that is: Guitar - MXR 6 band blue, Furman FP4 / 3, Randall rg 100 es or Century 200, but when performed a solos, what happens, what goes on?? comments to you!
a million bonus points to anyone who can tell me.....

Saw Down on Saturday-he had kind words about Dime!
by koury73 on Mon May 28, 2012 8:48 pm
Saw Down in Houston this Saturday. It is so nice to see Phil smiling and singing good and truely looking like he wanted to be there. He did a little rant about Dimebag and it was very kind and loving. If you guys haven't checked up on Phil lately, he's on top of his game again. Of course never again will he be in the prime of VDOP days, but it was his best performance I've seen out of him probably since 95.

Heres some pics! Of course I was in the front row lol. .
