1993 Peavey® Rockmaster Rack Tube Preamp

Review:
1U Rack unit, All tube preamp..
Very light, easy to use, simple exterior & interior design.. but, LOTS of features. You see all those little knobs? 25% of them are push/pull..

This means, let's say you've got the three regular types of channels; Clean / Crunch / Modern
What kind of sound you obtain isn't limited to the 4 band Eq you see on the left. There's still the 3 knobs to the right.. wait, not yet!

You still have push pull knobs within these Eq / Voicing pots which drastically change the overall tone you're getting..

Wait.. wait! Still not over yet, plus you can pull those Gain controls! These add even more gain over on top to what a regular channel jump does.. I'd count this preamp a 5 channel preamp.. it's got insane amounts of drive! No wonder they labeled it; Ultra Twisted Evil

If I was asked to rate this thing, I give it an instant 10/10
Why? Well, all I said above is the front panel.. At the rear; you've got exactly 10 Jack inputs, just for the FX Loop section; every channel has got it's own Send / Return.. siding a Common Send / Return to affect the complete amp.
Next to all this, there is a little switch for all us 110v players.. You can adjust accordingly to get rid of the 60 cycle hum.

Push everything aside; the front is labeled with Pink & Cyan..
Now.. is there anything more 90's than that?? Cool

1991 Randall® RG-180 DX (Early Century3000) Combo Amp

Review:

They're considered as the "Post-ES" series, right before Randall introduced the Century models in early 1992.
The preamp and power amp structure of the RG-DX & Century's is the same as the older RG-ES's for the most part. The Century has some slight differences in high frequency filter cap values and other power-amp upgrades but for the most part the tone generating components are 101% identical. I have personally seen the schematics on this amp and they clearly state that the Randall Century 200, Century 3000, RG180 DX and RG200 ES all share the same schematic.

The late; Darrell "Diamond / Dimebag" Abbott is hugely responsible for the popularity of these metal beasts, as people who are familiar with TAMPORA know these were the amps used to record the "VDOP" & "Far Beyond" albums.

These Irvine era Randall's are the very few solid-state (FET) amps to hold their own amongst the many popular valve / tube amps.
Like all solidstate Randall's.. VERY sturdy & loud! Around late 2010; I blew the fuse + preamp + power-amp section due to plugging it into a 220v socket by mistake, and after replacing a few diodes & the 3A fuse, not only did it get resurrected, it even sounded better!

I was lucky to get hold of it along with it's rare FS-5 footswitch that allows you to change channels from the green channel to the red channel and also select both channels at the same time. Having both channels going at the same time gives you incredible flexibility over the overall sound of the amp, along with Bright (Treble) Boost, Mid Boost & Sustain (Gain) Boost options. I also own a even more rare 2U Rack version of this amp modeled as; Randall RGP1000, and the DX is superior in my book, although the RGP has an insane dual layer Chorus feature.

Love it! More than my Peavey Rockmaster..

2006 DigiTech® "HULK BLOOD" WH-7 Whammy (Heavily Modded)

Review:
Long story lying under my Whammy..
Traveled a lot more road than me or you.

When I got my WH-4 out of it's box, I plugged in and of course immediately ripped into the +2 octave module & started plucking "Tampora - You've Got To Belong To It".. I'm playing along.. things were too squeeky! I thought it would be because I had plugged into my Whammy first, than flat-boosted the signal with my ol' MT-2 back then (Kirk wannabe me, tut tut).. I swapped the cables around, things sounded better but while I detached the pedal, I felt there was some sound loss with the Whammy in the signal.

Anyway, plugged back in.. kept playing everything was great.. but, what's that slight delay? After a while it started to get on my nerves. I was loosing it, I just wanted it to be perfect. I thought it ought to be because it was a darn "re-issue" pedal..

I start searching all over the net..
Everyone was complaining about the WH-4 latency problem. The way it sucked out tone.. I figured it was an universal issue, and since everyone was praising the original WH-1, I decided to go for it! I left bulletin posts everywhere, including domestic websites & shops that I'm in search for the original..

I get an e-mail, this guy says he's got the WH-1 in good condition, can sell for a reasonable price. Then asks me why I'm so obsessed with the WH-1, I stated all above. He apparently has been doing amp + pedal modifications in Turkey for pretty long, and also to big shot artists around the world.. so this dude wants me to send in my own WH-4, he shows reference & promises he would handle all issues & convinced me that the WH-4 is superior, both in body mass to the original, plus that it's more functional; for instance having a MIDI connection..

After a week, back comes my Whammy.. a nice oiled up treadmill & with this additional switch smack in the middle? I sit down and try it out;

- Latency gone.
- Calibration switch added.
- True Bypass function instead of the regular on/off.

I was scared.. hell glad to meet this genius!
Then, having to be really bored of red, & Kirk Windstein my idol.. I decided to go for this disgusting snot green.. and pay tribute to my childhood hero "HULK BLOOD".. trashing hotels & managing to stick chairs into exit lamps.

Thats an RGP1000.
Basicly a RG100es preamp with some other features as I understand it.

The Century3000 is a Combo version of the Century200 amp,
These two models share a completely identical preamp structure as the RG180DX and RG200ES models..
The only differences are within the poweramp, which are not noticeable (unless you really know your electronics), the Jaguar > Celestion speaker change & cosmetic changes; like the front panel labeling & red knobs.

Spite is correct,
The blue faced 2U Rack in the beginning of the video lying on top of the combo is a Randall RGP1000 Preamp Unit.
Well, we can't call it a "RG100ES", as those digits represent the general output of their model (like 80,100,200..) Calling it the Dual Layer RG-ES Preamp would be more true, as it's output varies according to the poweramp you've plugged into.
It's like having two of the old Randall amps in one rack unit, with all the boost options & analog chorus module for each layer. Like you normally can do with the channels, you can blend both green & red amp layers and come up with even more wacky stuff; with extreme chorus/reverb, or getting a sound like your playing underwater, by dialing opposite Eq settings. I have a review thread on the RGP1000, here is the link to it.

All these Randall models mentioned are solid state.
They're all Pre-Washburn made & sound similar to each other, with the Presence knob being the most recognizable feature; Yes! Making the amp sound from high-gain Crowbarish, to that JCM800 bold rock sound to that trebly Pantera sizzling distortion. It's all there, when you build on it with external Eq'ing and drive pedals.. you can convert it to anything you can imagine.

You don't need any of these external toys with the Peavey Rockmaster, it does it all by itself. Wink

I bought mine. It was cool, but in 1998 I had my rg80-es mini stack in mint condition become available and I decided to sell the rg180dx.
I still miss it but I didn't know what I had back then.

The rg180dx was $300 when I bought it.

People have been asking me about the Gibson 86' SG..
It's got some story beneath it. I was after this guitar over some local forum 2-3 years back actually.. day after day, I always tried buying it off the guy who owned it back then. Never was able to convince him..

After some time, we met by coincidence at a gig downtown.
This ol' school rock band was doing it's thing, and this guy wasn't watching the band play. I noticed he was just starring at the guitarist's Ibanez PGM which was on the stand at the side, with a beer in hand.. just gazing..

I had a Dean Explosion Razorback in hand if you remember. So, I planned & managed to cross-trade;

Dean Razorback > Carvin 89' DC200
Carvin 89' DC200 > Ibanez 90's PGM

I've got a picture of the Carvin DC200 here , it was pretty good!
Although it's really easy to write all these down, believe me it took time.. like four of five months to come across each guitar above..

PGM.. hated the guitar, you know the white one with black f-holes, maple neck.. skinny as feck.. anyway, checked the soldering & replaced the strings.. adjusted everything.. restored it.
So, the next day I get the guitar in hand, I ask the guy to meet up at a studio & jam, improvise.. he comes over, pulls out the SG.. (I drool..) starts warming up, then I pop out the PGM.. Mr. Green

He started sobbing, couldn't even talk properly.. "pass it over, pass it over!"..
because it was a dream for him! Made in the early 90's, color has gone yolky.. superb condition.. I pass it over rolling my eyes.. Rolling Eyes

I was sure he was going to love it. After he played for a while, I sat on the combo amp, made him the offer, "You take the PGM home, I just want the SG.. today.. now.."

The "studio session" was cancelled that moment,
Although it practically took me a year, that's how I got it ! Laughing

It's a limited "3-Knob" edition of the Special series. Alpine White color gone bone-like..
lots of hits & bashes, which I adore. With it being from the same era and made from a mahogany body, maple neck & an ebony fingerboard, it's what you can call the SG version of Hetfield's 84' Explorer.

No, That was used in pretty nice shape. I bought one out of the tradin time's mag we had here, but the same week I saw one at guitar center for same price in same condition. Only 2 I ever saw in person.

NEW PROJECT : 86' Gibson Concrete Sledge SG

After years & years of silence..
Yep, I'm going for it! Cool

Stripped it completely down, all electronics & metal parts.. including the fixed-bridge mounting stud bushing. The only non-wood material currently on are the frets.. Here's a video that helped a lot, mind you :

All has been planned;
I'm changing the positioning of the electronics, going to have the switch nearer to the bridge, like on regular SG's.. I'm hunting down a Floyd Rose®.. enough! I've had to make do with a Tune-o-matic for more than 3 years! My hands are craving to do a divebomb!! Mad

I've applied some modeling cement, putty, whatever you call it.. on all the bumps, bashes & cracks from 24 years of excessive use. Removed all the paint & sanded it down. Changed the upper strap button location. Refined the edges & applied the first coat of white primer, as the colors are gonna be bright! Twisted Evil

I managed to score two sets of these 80's Floyd Rose Tremolos..

Heres an upskirt angle of the tremolo..

From all I've read, they're considered like non-recessed Floyd's..
directly mountable to fixed bridge guitars, no routing or cavity needed. Just pop it into the stop-tail bushings. The nut is up to you. I ordered a 43" Floyd Rose (R3 - 1.695") locking nut as the Kahler style would be weaker.
The whole project is spiritual masturbatory, so I have no problems with irreversible changes as I'm not thinking of selling this thing anyway! Cool

Applied a hefty coat of toffee gloss.. I made things continue a bit towards the rear,
including the.. ass cracks! Mr. Green

The thing I'd like to ask you all about is if direct mounting the pickups would effect the sound I get in any way?
Because I'd personally like the finish to show more, even did some shading around the humbucker cavities und covered up the mounting ring screw holes..

So please let me know about this..

Wow, how did I miss this thread?

I guess the Sledge paint job works out well on just about any guitar. You did a killer job on that. BRAVO!!!!

I would go with the hard mount. Like you said, it has a more raw look that I think would work well in this situation.

The CSSG is not complete yet, while doing all this, I didn't need to worry about the paint drying as I got the biggest oven in the world.. this huge badass sun.. It's February & I'm wearing shorts, there has to be something wrong with that.. haha! Very Happy

I'll be updating not only about the guitar, but also fellow members who are concerned about the flush mount tremolo system too;
if it functions properly, if it's worth to hunt down & throw that much ca$h at it..

The paint shrunk a little, there aren't any cracks, but some of the screwdriver holes weren't filled with putty, so the paint just happened so "sink" and dry within. I can't be bothered to go through another paint+gloss phase just because of some 2mm hole dents appeared around the humbucker cavities, so I'll just keep it out to dry until the shipment arrives..
the stink'll evade & it'll be rock hard by then.. (that's what she said.. Rolling Eyes

)

I've been after anchored pickups as a die hard George Lynch (maple syrup ♪ ) fan for years! So basically I'll be slapping all my long time fantasies on this guitar! Very Happy

If you can hang it out in the sun, there is no need to bake it. If you plan to wet sand it and buff it, sand it first with 2500grit and leave it sanded for 2 days. This will allow the solvents to escape faster and will give you a harder and glossier finish when it is done.

I really liked the 2x Holy s#%t's it got, specially from people who knew it in person years back.. Very Happy

I've put it together to see how it sounds;
apparently, the whole re-finish effected the playability in a positive way, has a very fresh feeling.. that's a major "phew!"
I set the action low, swapped & anchored the pickups.. to be honest, the 85 sounds really good in the bridge position.. balanced the output as it was way too dominant at the neck compared to the 81..
has more chunk, can stay for now! Was considering switching back to passives, but the results I've gotten with both clean & drive settings are 101% satisfying. So, there is a difference in performance, I'm glad to say in a good way!

@wyd-upan: Thanks much, did as you recommended. Then after, buffed it several times with Turtle Wax.. smells, shines and feels great now! It has that damp-sharp look at all times compared to it's first few days..

@783.2: Time is a lot to spend here.. besides, I felt just like Ahnold during the whole process! Cool

It's going to be flush mount,
so, no worries since there's no body routing! Laughing

Looped my self as the Rhythm guitar, added a layer of bass with the "Hold" option the Boss DD-7 offers.. it's just the neck pickup with the Tone knob rolled down, as I don't have a four stringer!
Excuse that it may sound a bit dry. It's home-recorded with the A.C. wizzing off at the back.. Engaged the "Mid Boost" on the Randall Century & chucked my own leads.. something different to listen to than the original..

The retarded seller sent both Floyd sets with Kahler nuts.. Laughing

So, I had to make do for a month or so like that. The tuning kept shifting a few cents per divebomb & that drove me nuts!
While gigging at one of the embassy gatherings here, I suffered trying to end every lead line with a slight yank on the tremolo bar, just to return back to pitch with the rest of the band.. (You can notice this also in the middle of the video posted above)
Anyway, the R3 Floyd nut I ordered arrived along with my major delivery. I am extremely proud to say that the Concrete Sledge SG plays flawlessly now.. handled the tuning stability issue to the bone! Wink

Oh, I crashed into one of my dream guitars online at Fat Cat Guitars & grabbed it without thinking twice,

sweet man. that has to be one of the coolest sgs ive seen in a long time.....a long long time.

ive had my shot at that paintjob too. check it out. i think the worst part about doing this one was that my back was killing me from doing all the cracks.

Since the modification process is complete; I've updated the whole thread with specs, reviews & some freshly baked pr0n..
I'm also very proud to say that Kirk Windstein & Grady Champion really liked the work along with all you brothers here.. It's a bodacious feeling to also get approval from your childhood heroes!

I was planning to also give the SG90D a Sunburst Tiger Purple Glittered refinish; but the guitar is just too damn good in condition for a re-touch.
Not only it's finish.. it just plays perfect, low action.. growling drive & pure single coil twang.. plus, audiox likes the bukkake.. Laughing

Don't ask! You can notice the cracks on the headstock are much bulkier and n00bly done as that's the point I started going down on it.. by the time I reached the rear "asscracks", I had become more of a veteran & my hands weren't clumsy anymore. Things got precise..

Your ML looks amazing! More a tanned pallet you've used, the only factor that bothered my eyes (excuse if I'm wrong..) was that the burst looks like its "hovering" because of it's shadow.. you get me? Have black borders along with the shading.. it'll look more like its inside a bashed slab of concrete.. not like fruit peels over it.
What's the original guitar by the way?

I totally understand you & had a laugh when you noted down Fisher-Price before, because that's what I mumbled the first few days; when I woke up & gazed at it with one eye first thing in the morning.. bashed my head back into the pillow..
The fact is that the varnish melted all about, finish had peeled off, there were way too many cracks around the neck as it had broken off before.. trust me, it was at a point blobbing it into baby brown would have made it look more sturdy & sexy.. I respect the fact it's new finish may not appeal to everybody, but thanks for appreciating the effort! Wink

i guess i never noticed it but yeah your right, it does look like its hovering. to be honest though, that was the first burst ive ever done, i went out and bought an airbrush gun like a week before i actually sprayed it. the original finish on this was the Warbird ML. i hated the idea of having a decal, even though it was cool, on the guitar. im actually listing it on ebay cause i need money for another project (1984 gibson explorer restoration). but yeah anyways thaks for liking it

gives me this K.K. Downing side to side rocking spirit.. Cool

Here, let me share a few shots..

Oh, I'm working on shifting the RG180-DX (Century3000) amp layer into a Head format, so I've converted it's old box into a 1x12" Jaguar Deluxe cabinet. Put some side handles to ease the haul.. I'll get the head repaired/modded to meet the specifications of an Bogner Ubershall by Cihan hopefully due till June 2012.. when I go back to Turkey for my Summer vacation..

To sum up; a 220v Hot-Rodded Century200 amp in a "Mark IV" sized small head chasis just sounds scary.. Twisted Evil
