So there's been tons of different randall cabs over the years and there's a few questions I have:
How can you tell if one is a older model with jaguars vs a newer one with jaguars?
What's different about the old jaguars vs the new ones?
Is there a certain model # for the better, old ones? (both the cabs and speakers)
What would you compare those speakers to?
I've seen some small 4x12s, like the ones in DropD's videos, are those the normal ones or did they just have compact ones as well?
Thanks for any help |

I have a cab from the 80's I think and it has jaguars. The little plastic thing on the front of the cab says so. Plus I opened it up and checked. I don't think Randall makes jaguar speakers anymore but don't quote me on it.
The mini 4x12 you saw in dropd video is actually a 2x12.
That's all I got |

Oh, well that would make sense. Never seen a square 2x12, always seen them side by side or top to bottom so in a rectangle. |

Randall does still make the jaguar speakers but apparently they are different sounding than the old ones. I dont really know the difference physically or sonically as I have only owned the old ones. The cabs with the old jaguars are marked R412 on the back. There is also a different model number I think RJ412 but not sure. Any of the carpeted cabs will most likely have them as they were part of the RG100ES set but they also came with tolex. The old jaguars havea mid punch to them that not many other speakers have and a pretty good bottom end with a crisp high. Remember, the old jaguars were all made in USA and are marked Irvine,CA.
Ok, heres what youre looking for. This is a screaming deal for these cabs. If youre in the market for them, I would do whatever it takes to get this pair of cabs as they dont come up very often in this condition.

those older 80's Randall cabs can be had very cheap, and they are built like fuggin tanks.
i've had 2 of the Jaguar cabs over the years (still got one), and also had one of the celestion loaded cabs. in my opinion the celestion speakers they used sucked. they are Celestion seventy 80's. i gutted that cab and put all V30's in it and it slays. in full stack mode the jag cab and the V30 cab are a monster.
solid cabs to be sure. good wood. |

Thanks for the info. There's I believe an older one for sale at another GC right by me for $200 but Chris Fields might have picked it up already. I'm not in the market right now but just wanted to know for when I am. |

The new cabs are totally decent but they have no reference to jaguar now. I think at some point they used to do the small magnet ones and when i got mine they were still called jaguar's but when i got the speakers out they were something like 12J in the model name and had a large magnet and no jaguar logo.
I've done a lot to research on this subject, even emailed people at eminence who developed the speaker for randall. If you want that frequency graph thing they do for speakers eminence told me that it's the property of randall as is the speaker so they hold all that info... which i could never get.
Anyway you want something close to that old speaker that's new i was told from eminence that the black powders are closest they make to it.
I've got a few of the old ones and i like them quite a bit, i downsized and got a 2x12 harley benton cab with v30's in and swapped them out with jaguars... never once did i miss them.
Also randall did for a while do 2x12's which where square like like the old ones that dropD's got and that was not that long ago. |

Thanks, have you tried black powder's? I thought the Jaggy's were made by Celestion, guess I'm wrong. I agree with you on V30s, every time I play a cab with them I notice how much weaker and thinner my tone gets, and I hate it. The best speakers I've played were Eminence Legends, can't remember which ones. But it was in a Soldano 2x12 semi open back. I'm really looking at eminence recently partially for the price, cause celestions are crazy expensive, and eminence just seem more refined for everything. |

Never tried the black powders in the end i was gonna buy a set just never needed to after i got my jaguars. Eminence seams to be competitively priced across the line as well which is good. |

I'm reading about them and it's giving me more questions. I guess BP's were designed for open back cabs and recommended NOT for closed backs? Seems they have loose bass and lots of it so in a closed back it's very "woofy". A term I would never associate with Dimes tone. Are the old randalls open or even semi open back? |

My 2x12's are late 1980's. 1989 to be exact. They slay!
As for slaytanics ebay link, I've done all sorts of deals with that seller. he has nice stuff and is trustworthy. |
