If you're looking for the classic Marshall sound, a 900 ain't the way to go. To me, they've always sounded a bit papery.

Dude, I hate when you post stuff man. Do you EVER proof read your typing prior to hitting the submit button? That is just plain rediculous. I dont really think you are a dumbarsed mutherfuckker... I just think you dont care and are in a big rush. Slow down and proofread before submitting. Damn boy!

Anyways, I have had lots and lots of amps, and currently own a JCM 900 100 watt high gain dual reverb. Its a great amp. And it sounds like a marshall to me. I did a little bit of work on mine, and I run a Sonic Stomp in the loop which opens the amp right up and makes it run with just about any other marshall in terms of tone, etc. They are a heck of a lot less money than a vintage JCM 800, and they sound better than new Marshall models to my ears. So unless you want to spend the money on a vintage 800, or a reissue, or get a signature amp like the Zakk or the Kerry King model, you cant go wrong with a JCM 900 in my book. They take a lot of flack, but now they are starting to get the recognition they deserve on the Marshall forums. They even just reissued the JCM 900 half stack in white, and its $3000. So they cant be too bad eh?

Your typing makes me giggle. it used to make me angry, but now I just giggle.

But I 've owned 3 different JCM900 4100, and 2 different 2100.

They all ripped. Excellent amplifiers as far as I'm concerned. The thing with them, is that they are not 'versatile'. Each one has it's own special sound that it wants to make. And when you dial that sound in, it is a BEAST of a machine. If I had any use for 100 watts, I'd get another one.

GLWT!!!

Yeah Matt, I love it when people write or say that the 900 sucks, or doesnt sound like a Marshall. Keeps 'em cheap so people like us can buy they for pennies. Love it. You all keep posting that they suck and sound like ass. Laughing Laughing Razz

A jcm900 4100 will probably be my first tube amp. I really feel like they can be versatile when you add the right pedal chain but by itself? Yeah, love it or leave it.

I'm still mad I didn't have the cash when I found one for 450.00.

Any amp with a good clean channel can be versatile.., that's what pedals are for!

Well yeah :p but I meant on the dirty side. I've tinkered a lot and really feel like I can get tons of usable tones from the right combo and settings on OD, EQ Pedal, fuzz, phase 90, noisegate and even a boss mt-2 if you use it sparingly. All on different amps dirty channels. So even if the dirty is a one trick pony, you can make it work. Just to clarify I'm not suggesting those pedals in that order those just happen to be the pedals I have an I'll change the order and settings depending on what I'm trying to do.

Here. Let me help you.

http://www.marshallamps.com/downloads/files/4100%20Hbk.pdf

I can't speak for whatever mods were done by this "voodoo" fellow, but here is the manual which I easily found using a combination of Google, Proper Spelling, and Punctuation.

I was playing on VooDoo's site a few weeks ago when I thinking about getting some of my MTS Modules modded and was just checking out the various mods to various amps they offer.

Being a John 5 fan and knowing from Brad and others on the forum that these are relatively cheap used, I was thinking about maybe trying to snag one just to have.

Voodoo no longer even lists the mods they offered for that amp.
I'm sure that if you contacted them they could tell you based on Serial #, that is if they keep records which I would assume they do.

Is the bass super tight on that one? Same question with the bass boost engaged?

It's a Marshall. The bass is never super tight. If you want super tight bass get a Mesa or an Engl.

Those are their basic mods. They also have the HG-Jose and mods like the AFD mod for 800s. They could have had some specific mods for 900s as well.

I knew you'd love it!

I plan on grabbing another, just to have. And leave in my living room, so my wife can wonder why I have it.

Hi ya Sherwood!

I had the JCM 900 SL-X. I loved it, and it was built like a tank. If you turn up Weezer's "Buddy Holly," that is the tone of the SL-X. It gives you one sound. If you like it, great. If you hate it, it ain't gonna change. I always did want to try the Dual Reverb since it actually had reverb. The SL-X didn't.

Oh, make sure to check out the tubes in the SL-X. They have been known to ship with three different types of tubes. The 6L6 ones were supposed to stay in the U.K. The EL-34's were supposed to be shipped to the USA. And then there were ones shipped with the military grades of the 6L6. As you are in Canada, I have no idea which one you might encounter. So definately double check.

I have the JCM 900 High Gain Dual Reverb Model 4100 with 5881 tubes. 100 watts. It has a super clean channel with loads of sparkle and clean head room. I think that is what makes that amp a bit unique compared to the 800 or the SLX. And the high gain channel has that signature Marshall grind. The amp can tend to sound a bit lifeless and flat if you dont tweak it right. And the highs can be a bit brittle as well. That is why those amps get a bad rap. Tons of people over the years have bought them, and just played them without dialing them in, and thought they sucked compared to the 800. You can plug into a JCM 800 with all the knobs set flat to noon, and it will sound killer. But if you take a Sonic Maximizer or a 10 band EQ, and put it into the 900's effects loop, it completely opens up the amp, and makes it sound killer. I also run a tube screamer in front with the gain on zero. That tightens it up tremendously. Its a good sound, and many people have played through mine and asked me how to get that sound out of their own rigs. There is only one answer... get a Marshall. Smile

Another thing people oerlok on the 900's was that the tubes - there was a period wher marshall was having a LOT of trouble getting ANY tubes [let alone good tubes]. A 900 might sound bad - it might have bad/and or original tubes. A tetube/rebias may make a WORLD of differnce.

I've heard a JCM-900 modded to take EL34's [ther was a limited run that came that way but due to aforementioned tube troubles they switced to 6l6's and the 5881's]. This one was retubed to take el34's, rebiased, and it was great sounding.

Marshall purists poo on the 900 becasue there is a diode that helps boost the signal in the pre-amp - big deal. nearly EVERY amp maker out there does that these days, and for a reason - its the only was to truly get high gain without a pedal or running like 8 pre-amp tubes [which is a LOT of heat, and a lot of fragile glass, and frankly and lot room you need].

900's can kick ass if they get good tubes, and if you spend some time dialing in a good tone [the controls on a 900 are kind of strong - kind of like the early peaveys and the transtubes - each dial is something like +/- 15db !!!!!]. a little goes a long way!
