I haven't been to NAMM since 2010, so I figured it's about time to go again. I wasn't able to book a room where all of the Dean guys are staying, so I got a room at Rodeway Inn....$55 a night! Who knew? I didn't think they had rooms that cheap anymore. With American Express travel points, this whole trip is only costing me $230 !! What a deal.

Is it walking distance? I haven't booked my room yet. DD may be playing this year (we were just asked) so depending on if we do it or not I need CHEAP rooms Laughing Either way I'll be there.

If you know someone that works for a company who has a booth there you can always ask if they have any extra room on their pass roster. The passes are pretty strict there. You have to show ID with your pass once in the door. You can get in the main lobby (which is HUGE) without a pass though and there is usually some stuff to buy (mainly NAMM gear, not brands like Dean, Fender or Gibson etc). But to get onto the convention floor or anywhere else you'll need a pass. Try friends who work at local shops and see if they are going and if they can help. Other than that you'll need some affiliation with a brand who is there.

The passes are hard to come by, and cost a pretty penny for the exhibiting company that purchases them. I work in the tradeshow industry, and this is the ONLY show that checks ID's so frequently, anywhere. They literally check your ID, and ensure it matches your show badge, at every hall entrance, at the top and bottom of all the escalators and elevators. They even checked my badge and ID one day last year to let me into the parking garage. I've seen other shows check ID's when you pick up your badge from the show services desk. But this is the only one that is so crazy.

I think the reasons for this are clear. First, there are litterally millions and millions of dollars of instruments in the halls. Maybe billions. They dont want any pilferring incidents, or something expensive getting damaged. Secondly, a few years back, this show became over-run with kids and adult music fans, and it seriously got in the way of the business people doing business. So they implemented this policy. This isnt like a guitar show where you can buy stuff. Its a business to business tradeshow, where music stores and the like go to see all of the new gear, and put in all their equipment orders for the year.

Sunday would be the day for you.

They do sell tickets to the general public on Sunday (last year was the first year they did that), so check to see if they are doing it again this year.

Yea, the security is INTENSE!!!! Two years ago I went in to get MAB's new USA guitar off the floor for a gig at the Whisky and even though I had all the proper documentation, they wouldn't let me off the floor as my badge was the 'wrong color'.

I had to walk back to the Dean booth and have one of the staff walk me to the exit door so I could get out with the guitar.

With that said, don't expect to purchase anything on the floor. It is a 'Trade show' so things are not for sale to leave with. It is for stores to place their orders and have it shipped to their store (sometimes months after).

Security is VERY strict. I couldn't get my own guitar out of there on the last day lol. I had an Artist badge and I was demo'ing yet I had to have James from Amptweaker walk to the door with me and sign it out and 3 security guys were scrutinizing the process. lol It was easy to bring it in, just taking them back out can be a hassle. Laughing I expect this year will be no different with my guitar but I should have the right color "A" badge this time. Laughing Some companies will let you purchase things from them but most of them won't unless you have a dealer or distributer badge. The trick is to find one of them and have them purchase the item for you and you pay them. Even then you may not be able to take it home until after Musikmesse, so you'll get it but months later Laughing

N - Not
A - Available
M - Maybe
M - May

I'm only looking to get an advance order on the new Marshall ZW head this year. Other than that I don't care to buy anything.

I Was with Rita my first namm several years back (the first year Dean displayed Dime's Dean from hell) and you wouldn't believe what we had to go thru to get it in. Your badges have to be a certain color to allow you to walk around with gear... josh had to come and save the day. At one point that day I was asked to hold it for a min (while they did something, before it was displayed) and security even came and tried to hassle me (cause I didn't have the right type badge). Its intense! I haven't been in a few years and am looking forward to seeing the madness again lol

I get an exhibitor badge so I have total access. Part of my job every year is to get the Blackstar 100 watt 6L6 half stack for Andy James, our guitar clinician. And it's still a minor pain to run gear around from hall to hall. But not as bad for me as for you guys.

Security is a pain in the ass. One of my friend's band played at the 2011 NAMM, and they couldn't bring their own guitars in. Thankfully our Fender rep after talking to him loaned out a couple guitars and a bass.

That is odd for sure. I had no problem bringing my guitar in. It was leaving with it that was a pain.

They were told since they had the R.E. badges and didn't have artist badges they couldn't bring them in. Our store wasn't allowed any artist badges so it was the best we could do. Them playing was a last minute thing since another band had dropped out. The NAMM people were suppose to issue them artist badges but for some reason never did. It's not like they played a main stage. They played a food court lol.

Sorry. No.

But I was thinking about the original subject of this thread, which is NAMM on a budget. It is really cool to get to go there every year and have all my expenses covered. And I get to make a few bucks too. I don't take it for granted either. There was a two year stretch a while back where I didn't have any work at the show, or any work nearby, and I couldn't justify the travel expenses and didn't go. So when this ESP gig came up, I was very happy to jump on it. It's a little outside my usual scope of what I do at tradeshows, but I get to immerse myself in music equipment for a week, so it works.

If any of you do make it up, stop by. And we always try to make a DOA meet time at the Dean booth too. It's gonna be a fun show this year. Last year was a bit subdued because there wasn't much new gear released. I hope there are lots of major gear announcements this year.

Andrea and I can't wait to see you again bro! Are we going to do The Grove again this year? DD were going to play that show but last minute hijinks with the promoter has us pushed to the next NAMM after this one... Bummer. But I'll be demo'ing for Esoterik playing DD songs at the booth! Anyway it's going to be a blast!

Hey Lanning, from what I have been told, there will be no Dean NAMM Jam this year at the Grove. There will however, inevitably be other shows at the Grove. For Example, i went down to the Schecter party at the Grove two years ago and it was mobbed and quite crappy. Nothing was as good as the Dean Jam there over the past few NAMM shows. Those were great. But I will keep my eyes and ears peeled for happenings and goings on. Smile

Looking forward to a great NAMM this year. I will make sure to schedule a DOA meet up at the Dean booth again. that was fun. Lets pencil in Saturday afternoon like usual. And post up a more precise time when it gets closer. But I will be in town for setup and tear down, so I will be there from Monday to Monday this year. So we can hang whenever you get in town. Del Taco here we come!

BKW, glad you were able to put it all together and make it back out to NAMM this year. Looking forward to hanging again. I havent seen enough of you lately. Smile

I have heard the Dean NAMM Jam is happening again this year.

Curse posted that he was working on it on FB last week. So the rummer that it was dead may have been premature.

What once/twice a month isn't enough... Wink

Lanning... I had a blast meeting you and Andrea last year! I definitely will stop by the booth... hopefully we can explore again. It was fun walking around with you when you you purchased the guitar and then went and got tuners.

Then we invaded the Jet City booth and came up with a number of ideas for them.

I'm wondering if that's what happened to us playing The Grove. We were asked to play that show and then were told they didn't know what was happening with it. Then yesterday I got a call that it wasn't happening but would definitely happen next year. They asked if we wanted to play The Whiskey but that's too small a show for us to soak up the travel expenses for. We were going to tour down and back but the drummer we're using has 3 fly out dates with another band around the NAMM date so he can't do it like that. It kinda blows but I'm not in charge lol

Brad, I hope to make the DOA meetup this year too. You should all come by the Esoterik booth too and I'll jam some of our tunes for you guys. I'm bringing backing tracks for the demos.

Brian, we will FOR SURE make another crazy, floor scouring run of insanity. We WILL hunt and peck at gear again!

I will be performing a few times a day at the Esoterik booth as well and I have to be there most of the time to help out so we'll have to coordinate. They are using my guitar as one of the display guitars this year too so I want to keep an eye on it lol

By "Organically" Brian means we rolled our tongues off the floor long enough to go for a walk around for a bit lol

Can you snag Andrea and I passes again? I will be stuck in Hall E, Booth 1355 for part of the day on Thursday so I don't want to miss getting them. I'm demo'ing Thursday through Sunday at 2pm each day too if you want to stop by.

I know we are staying through Tuesday. We have tickets for The Price Is Right after NAMM. I'm flying out of Vancouver at like 5am on Thursday morning so I'll be nice and exhausted for the first day lol See you there!

You want to talk exhausted? i will already have 3 days of work in before you get there. LOL... Working in the tradeshow and event business, i go to a lot of shows in a year. But this is the only one where I dont drive a keyboard, and actually do manual labor. But I am not complaining, mind you. Schlepping out 400 sweet guitars and hanging them on the wall is a lot of fun. If I am gonna do actual physical work once a year, I couldnt think of a better way to do it. Smile But yeah, I'll be pretty worn down by the time I see you on Thursday bro. Cool

Lanning,

For the NAMM Jam....No promises.. I was given a couple of tickets last year.. with Shinedown, they may be tighter with the passes.. but I will see what I can do.

Since you are staying... you and Andrea should come to this show in Hollywood. This is MAB playing his classic hard rock classics from his first band (Holland). MAB, Nick, JD and Curtis played Hollands single (Gotta Run) at DOA last year.

* UPDATE *
THE CHICAGO GUYS ARE BACK!
Michael Angelo Batio of HOLLAND & NITRO, Drummer KC of NITRO, Alex Kane of LIFE, SEX & DEATH ~ ANTI PRODUCT & HOLLAND, and Happenin' Harry will be performing an entire set of HOLLAND songs from the Atlantic Records Release LITTLE MONSTERS at The Dragonfly in Hollywood, California on Sunday, January 27 th at 9pm for the 12 th Annual NAMM Show After Party!
FREE TO GET IN WITH YOUR NAMM BADGE!
Open to the public Smile

Just to give you as sample of Holland, here is a video I have never posted the link of. It has MAB and Jim Peterik playing together and covering each-others hits. The first song is 'Gotta Run' which we played at DOA and will be in the set, then they go into "Eye of the Tiger" by survivor:

May i ask a request to the good fella's going to NAMM. if ya get the time(which i know will crunched) could ya try the new Randall Thrasher Series amps? i may end up back in the market for a half stack & these have caught my attention specially since the almighty Mike Fortin designed these.
