i guess it only takes a crapton of tattoos, your sisters jeans and some buttplugs in your ears to turn a nerdy kid into a rockstar these days.
3 guitars . killer drums but still aweful music. but hey the kids like it. vocals sound like someone recorded a pig farm.how come all these bands sound exactly the same?

now im not looking to get my thread trolled and start arguments. but if you aspire to be any type of a musician, I personally just cant see anyone liking this past a couple of listens but then again I like alot of stuff alot of people hate too. i guess it comes with the territory. you cant please everyone all the time. the kids are having fun and living out their dreams. i dont see them making enough money to pay back their gear, recordings , tattoos, videos and tour but maybe they do. |

You know how it is though. It's like when we were young and the older generation looked at what we were listening to and they just didn't understand. It's the evolution of music. Do you remember Star Wars? That effd' up bar with the aliens, playing that crazy music? I think that was actually tantamount to what we're seeing now. There are still bands out there that hold it down the way we like it and then there is this whole other scene of ear plug, skinny jean "Scene Kids" (that's what they are called these days) who are into this style of music.
They even have their own social network.

I like it. The first two videos anyway. The other two are garbage. And I hate his pig squeal thing. Its not the worst chug chug breakdown with cookie monster vocals ive ever heard. I couldnt care less what they are wearing. |

Can't get into them despite my love for Jason Richardson's playing. I was bummed that his influence wasn't prominent ever since he joined that band. |

When I was growing up as a young teen it was saggy jeans and hoodies. Metal kids always did the blue jean/t-shirt thing. There were New Wave kids as well as Goth kids but Times have changed for sure. The "Scene Kids" have taken over for sure. It's their time to wear the uniform of the time. They aren't rebelling because they all look the same. If anything their identifying with each other. It's not so bad though. Who knows what will replace this fad lol |

I was referring to whoever is backing this hot mess. music business. the only word that matters to suits, is business. People only invest money in hopes making a return. Someone is flipping the bill for their videos , Joey Sturgis recordings, gear, tour, taco bell, van rides and showering in Mcdonalds sink. I would be curious to how the investment is paying off cause kids dont buy music anymore. Are bands like this who where ever band on warp tour looks and sounds identical really selling that many tshirts to support their career.? Cause some day, these kids are going to have to get real jobs and no one is going to hire someone with face tats, buttplug holes in their ears and facial piercings. So part of it better be about the money. |

No one once said anything bad about their playing ability. Where did you even get that idea. They are very talented as players. |

Just saying its ignorant, considering the extreme amount of talent some of these "scene kids" have. I just find it funny. I have run across this attitude a lot in older players 40> and a lot of these newer musicians are way more skilled at their craft then the pervious generations. |

nope never said guitar players were bad. Rihana has a great guitar player in her band too , so does charlie daniels , so does periphry, but cant stand any of their music. Lots of great players have music that people cant stand. |

Then you need to be a little more articulate expressing what you mean. Because you didnt say anything about that the first time. All you said was that we were ridiculing their guitar playing , which has nothing to do with my expression of their tats, piercings and clothes.
I can appreciate the fact that you probably like this band considering your lack detail to express yourself under distress from my opinion.
Also you getting talent of guitar playing mixed up with individuals opinion on what music please them. This is two different things. I would agree alot of musicians as they get old start to dislike the younger generation music. I'm not sure if it is fact, but it appears to be the norm from my experience. Now myself, I like a lot of new bands, I dislike a lot too. I would disagree that a lot of the new musicians are more skilled at their craft than the previous generations. I think that most of the generations have always had skilled players. Its just easier these days to know about it with internet. Before you only knew about great players if they got famous. now days anyone can turn on their computer and know about talent. Alot of the previous musicians have paved the way for the newer guys. Who do you think they are stealing from? I didnt want my thread to end up being an argument thread but I guess I didnt help matters. so Lets hear you play some guitar. Wow me, show me that the younger generation can outplay the older generation. |

Chris I think I have your answer. If you look you'll see that these bands always go out on package tours and festivals. On those the ticket prices are higher so the return is greater. These bands will play for next to nothing and don't make much. When they are on tour by themselves they are in much smaller clubs and the guarantees are super low. It's more about the exposure for the bands than money. There is money, it's just that the bands aren't making it. They are bands comfortable with low album sales due to downloading. I know a few guys in mid level bands like these and they don't make much. Most of them work for a living and ditch work for touring when it comes up. Music isn't paying the bills. |

The only ones you have to watch out for are the fans. The members of these bands are living the reality of it all and know the deal. They aren't misled. If you ask a fan of Chealsea Grin about the band they'll tell you they are the best band in metal, or the new face of metal, blah blah blah, but no one outside of that genre of metal even know who they are. Most people know who Lamb Of God is, not Chelsea Grin. LOG is the face of modern metal because they are almost a household name. Chimaira, one of my favorite all time bands, has toured relentlessly and tirelessly through line-up changes and record label changes for over 13 years now. They are still very much unknown outside of heavy metal and even in that genre people will say "Chi-Who?" They have played stadiums and big tours supporting the biggest bands in metal for over a decade.
Ask someone who Rhianna is, or Toby Keith, or Metallica. Everyone, regardless of what they like has heard those names. Those artists are making bank.
I think there is a very misinterpreted understanding about what playing in a band and touring is Vs. being a rock star. These kids aren't rock stars anymore than you or I are. No one would recognize them walking down the street. If I'm in a music store and I see a scene kid come in I don't know if he's wearing the latest Hot Topic outfit mom bought him or if he's in one of these bands lol... I just treat everyone with the respect they show me. |

i think one thing that gets ignored lately is that there are bands willing to perpetualy tour ,because they can break even, because......guess what....THEY GET TO KEEP TOURING!!!! |

It's just the thing. In the 60s you had your colorful headbands and bell bottoms. In the 80s everybody dressed like slutty females. In the 90s you had the I don't care, button up flannel and dirty jeans look. Now you have the skinny jeans and big ear plug things and guys screaming and grunting about lost love and how much they hate the government. Just going with the times.
I'm not a huge fan. |

So here I am hoping that this would be a topic on Hammerfall, Edguy, and the like and you make it about scene kids. Chris I feel cheated.
The Scene kid thing does kind of shock me as most of them are dooming themselves to lives of low wages and basement dwelling in their parents houses with their over the top commitment to "expressing themselves" |

any genre that you don't like.. the bands will always sound the same. what about 80's metal bands? they all had big hair, tight pants, and all had the chorus effect going on. if you didn't grow up listening to them, they all sounded the same. country music to me all sounds the same. hip hop all sounds the same. death metal used to all sound the same to me before i got into it. modern radio rock all sounds the same.

Lmao, you awright in my book.. I don't really have a comment about the band. What ever. I just heard a guy by the name of Jimmy Dunlop was hangin and partying with Uli in Amsterdam.

I kinda wanted to B slap them too. I think the guitarist is very talented infact i think he's awesome but i just cringe at those vocals and breakdowns in every god damn song. What I'm hoping happens is on the 21st of December, (the supposed apocalypse) the record industry comes back full swing. All the major labels come back and destroy independent labels that don't have their sh1t together. All file sharing sites crash, and all of the horrible bands that you look at and wonder how they got where they are, are then dropped like a ton of cow sh1t on a hot skillet. A complete resurgence if you will. A music industry apocalypse... Then we'll see who's still around after the smoke clears. |

That would be worth seeing. Sad how file sharing killed the industry just when bands started to get decent contracts. I think back to when Sabbath made almost nothing but created a metal genre that would later spawn bands Like judas priest, Scorpions, Iron Maiden and metallica (early metallica, don't go there.lol) . It was good to see Ozzy take some cash back from the industry. Music industry has all but crumbled since.
I used to love to go pick up new albums $3.77 at Zeds in Long Beach. Old school, I still pay for music. |

I wish everyone would just let metal die a dignified death instead of continually propping up and parading its corpse around like Weekend at Bernie's. |

Like, hey, man, back in my 'formative' years we wore the super big bells, tie-dyed shirts, leather vests and headbands. Yeah, we were identifying with one another just like these kids. And I just dated myself big time.
Either a Fender Twin cranked wide open or a Marshall Stack/half stack cranked was the needed amp. You had to have a Les Paul, since a Strat was looked down upon as a second tier axe. Wah pedals and some obnoxious distortion box was mandatory. I'm sure my parents thought my music sucked, too.
Anyway, my grandson plays that 'mall scene' or Djent music. Okay, there are many of these guitarists/bassists/drummers that are very talented, it's just a shame the music sounds the same from band to band. If there was some variety there, it would be 'all good' in my book.
As an aside, my metal days playing style was almost like this, only not a lot of this palm muting.
I have to say, the 'death demon scream' vocals suck big time. I think the vocals are the big turn off to that music for me. This coming from an old fart that played second lead in a metal band "The Atomic Monks", kind of a tongue in cheek band where we were more focused on having a good time. Weapons at that time were two Gibby V's (had to have a backup) and a Fender Twin modified by Dan Torres that ran a bit hot and would shock you once in a while.
Just my 0.02 USD worth. YMMV.

I might be the youngest commenting here and I've seen my fair share of f**king weird styles, but I've personally never understood the earrings. They're either the button ones that take up 1/2 of your ear or the "gauges" that stretch out the ear lobe to ungodly proportions. Makes me want to clip a padlock on whoever wears them...
"Buttplugs" was hilarious, though
The garb doesn't affect me as much as the music. I've been getting more and more into heavier and much more technical music (Nevermore, Racer X, Dream Theater, Symphony X, and other bands with 7-string guitars, 'screaming'-style vocals, etc), but I don't understand "heavy" for the sake of "heavy." What's the point of an 8th guitar string if you just chug at it in the open position while your "vocalist" does his demon thing?
That kind of music actually turned me off from looking up new stuff when I was in high school. And I'll most likely never catch on to 100%, all-screaming vocals. I need voice! Sing, dammit! |
