I'm currently rocking a 5 watter and it's loud as the hammers of hell.
I have a 50 watt head as well, but there's not much difference in volume between a 50 watt and 100 watt amp; the difference is generally in clean headroom, at least when it comes to tube amps anyway. To get that '100 watt sound' you're talking about, you'd still need to crank it to the stage where it'd blow your drywall out.
You'd be much, much better off with a low-wattage amp for bedroom/home practice. In my experience, that's the best way to get the 100 watt 'sound' at low volume, unless you want to buy an attenuator or something like that.
Just my 'dos pesos'. |

If you dont need 100w, you dont need 50w.
Check out a Blackstar HT5, Orange tiny terror, Egnater Rebel 20 etc. |

There is not much preceived volume difference between a 100w and a 50w man. Get a Marshall Class 5 and you already have pedals to boost right? |

I've played both and the 100w is three channel and the 50w is "three" channel but you can realistically choose between 2 at a time.
For instance. You playing clean and then choose channel two. The increase in volume is tremendous. So, you have to go from clean to channel 3 to keep the same level. They could have kept the shared eq but put a level control on channel 2 so you can level the volume jump. I bet modders are working on this already. If I had the head I would be. |

Get a JetCity JCA20 and the 2x12 cab. Unless you have a bedroom the size of a small club, it'll be plenty loud enough. And, as a bonus, it's an affordable setup. |

I will again place my vote for the Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister (18 or 36). It's got a built-in power soak, and it sounds great at lower wattages. |

I would recoemend the H&K Tubemeister 18, or the Blackstar HT-20H, and run themthrough a QUALITY 2X12 cab [preferably an oversized cab]. An Orange cab, or a Avatar cab would be my recomendations.
Lower wattage will allow you to turnt eh volume up more and actually get power tube sound distortion, not just the clipping preamp distortion that you're getting with your volume under 5. It makes a BIG differance in your tone. |

Hughes and Ketter Tubemeister 36 head.... I'm using one now. It's superior, IMHO, to any small head out there. 36 watts is plenty to use with a band, but it has a built in attenuator. You can use it at 36, 18, 5 and 1 watt. It has a DI out that sounds like a mic'd 412 cab so you can record with it and you don't need to have it hooked up to a speaker cab if you have it hooked into a recording or live sound console. It automatically gives the power section a full load if it detects no speaker cable inserted. It's got reverb and is completely midi controllable. It's 3 channel as well. The clean channel has that super clean hi-fi sound that a lot of fusion guys have. The crunch channel has a more vintage sound and can do AC/DC to 80s metal. The lead channel sounds like an ENGL... It's got s fvck ton of gain and will melt your face. It's auto biasing so you never have to see a tech to switch tubes. It comes with a travel bag and only weighs 30lbs. It's go oversized output transformers so it has the thump of a big head. I have used mine with the band and it's plenty loud... This is the head you should check out! END THREAD/ |

I have the tubemeister 18 and I can confirm what Lanning said about that series: it rocks. Mine is only 2 channels and no reverb, and enough gain to play most everything except perhaps the most abusive swedish oldschool stuff.
And, bonus the redbox is actually good.
The EVH also sounds very good at low volumes but costs twice the price of the H&K. |

Just checked out the Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 36. It's hard to differentiate it from a Marshall with my eyes closed, I am very impressed, I think I will look into one of these and sell the 6505 2x12 and save a little space to boot |

It is different in person, being that I own both the 36 and a JCM800 I can hear a difference. You can get a decent passible mid range sound from it if you really tweak it but it's a modern sounding amp through and through. I would suggest the 36 over the 18 if you can afford it just because it has one more preamp tube and the 36 watts gives you extra headroom for more modern tones at a level where the 18 will start to push in to more vintage power amp breakup. Plus the 36 has midi and reverb. To my ears the gain on my 36 sounds more like an ENGL than anything else. It reminds me of the voicing of my old Fireball without the horrible mid range scoop... The voicing on the 36 has a lot of mid range, even with the mids all the way off it's never quite scooped. |

Depending on what you want to spend. I was at my max spending level at $599 and went with the DSL 40c wich ended up costing an additional $30 with a 10% discount. The 36w definitely looks like a more aggressive amp with lots of features with more modern sound to it. You can't beat the size either. I found for me the Marshall was what I wanted all along. I guess putting a limit on spending is a bad idea when it comes to compromising your tone.
Lanning and Northwind you both have way more experience than I do. |

I had a JCM2000DSL 100w head, fabulous amp
Lanning, I would get the 36, the 18 would not quite cover what I need. The H&K sounded more like the DSL, not a 800, this is what I was comparing it to |

I can't comment there as I haven't played a DSL in like 8 years. I just know it sounds like my old ENGL Fireball 60 but has better mids.
Yes, if budget is an issue though I would get the 18 before I got most of the other small amps out there. I'm really glad I found this amp. It came as a recommendation from a guy I know that works at my local shop. I ingored him and bought the 5150 mini, but after a week of owning it and trying the Tubemiester I could see the H&K was the superior amp. |
