Can someone PLEASE explain when they took over and Norlin merged with Gibson or took over? The Guy at Guitar Center said , unless it's a 70-80 mixed year model then they are ALL Norlin's , until the late 90's? & Could of been "HIT OR MISS"! I guess I should of researched this better , unless he does not know his stuff? Confused

I'm bout to do some research myself but he said he would never buy a Vintage site unseen!

A quick entry of "Gibson Norlin" into the Google Search Bar turned up approximately 405,000 returns.

Can someone explain the AMF Voit years for Harley Davidson, too?

He said if it was some of the earlier 70's models then there could of been a few issues but at the same time there were some good models but the Vintage SilverBurst I just purchased , well I was told there should be Nothing to worry about, as everyone he personally played from 79-85 were all BadAzz....Should of done more research but I think I am good, I can tell you about PRS's, Washburn's ,Fenders, Jackson's but still learning on Gibson's , but ALWAYS wanted one and had been doing some research lately but found some Contradicting statements ...But I feel at ease now , but feel free to chime in if anybody has any knowledge on anything having to do with Gibson, Thanks!

A good guitar is a good guitar, and a bad guitar is a bad guitar. The idea of certain years being better than others is a little ridiculous to me. Fair enough, you have iconic years like 1959 and years where the specs on certain guitars makes them desirable, but saying something like 'All Les Pauls made in 1978 are trash' is just a stupid statement.

You'll also tend to find that those who make such statements don't have much by way of actual experience; it's all based on hearsay.

It really doesn't matter what year, specs or wood a guitar has, who made it or what it says on the headstock; if it's a good one it's a good one.

Just play the darn guitar and see how you feel about it.

I don't think I've heard two people agree on when Gibson's "bad years" were. It's all over the place. I know on one board I read he really hated the 77-79's. But I have a friend who actually has owned some Gibsons that were made from 77-79. He loved them. He really liked the models that were made with a maple neck. So, you really have to take it with a grain of salt. You are going to run into some pretty good ones, and some not so good ones.

I also wanted to add that what may sound good to one person's ear may not sound good to another. Remember, Gibson had T tops, and later the Tim Shaw designed pickups going from the 70's to 80's. Some people love them, and pay big bucks for them, and other players hated them so much back then that it gave the rise to Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio, and Bill Lawrence.

The guys at Guitar Center are not knowledgeable to guy that have been playing guitar for years. Norlin was made from 70-85. Then Henry bought Gibson.

That is correct. I hated my 57 TV, played like poop. My 76 played much better. Goes to show you some crap was made in the 50s. It was just hit and miss.

There are 59 turds, there are 68 turds, there are 70's, 80's, 90. and 00 turds.

Calling out a year as good or bad is simply stupid. Yes - there are general construction specs for a given period of time, but the company
a) Always made many models, differtent ways
b) Always made a fairly complex instrument (multiple types of wood, set neck, etc)
c) Always made them by hand

The guitars vary decade to decade, year to year, month to mont, and even serial number to serial number. One made right after another could be night and day. And most of them are solid guitars period. MAy not be worth what they cost, but they all are decent.

I personally PREFER the (general) 70's shape neck and the three piece maple construction/tone. YMMV

If it sounds good, and feels good, it IS good.

I have both a 73 and a 79. Not for sale or trade EVER.

I've had a bunch of Gibsons over the years. Fewer than some and more than many. I still own and clutch-with-my-dying-breath 3:

73 Les Paul Custom
74 Les Paul Signature
70-Idunno Ripper bass

Norlins suck. Go figure.
