I currently use a 4x12 loaded with WGS ET65's/Retro 30's
In an X pattern with my RedBear MK60.

I would like to get a second cab soon to run alongside
my 4x12 and am considering either buying or building a
2x15 cab. I'd like a huge bass/balls-y response and I'm
wondering if a 2x15 would be a good choice.

If I go this route (or any), the second cab would be
8ohms, with the amp running a total of 4ohms with
both cabs.

I'm in D standard and Drop C and our band's tone ranges
from tones like Down, CoC, Sleep, Crowbar, High on Fire, etc.

Thoughts from those with 2x15 experience or
speaker/impedance/frequency knowledge...?

I LOVE my 15's! Most 15's are PA speakers I think...It helps with the "METAL" & Bottom end...Good Luck , eBay Craigslist more than anything, even if she ain't in your town I found people will ship!

Well of course it is not gonna sound good by itself, just as long as you have some kind of good 4-12's, Vintage 30's to go with it is what I would suggest.

I just realized I could also run both 8ohm cabs in
series for a total of 16ohms.

What would be the difference in tone and/or output running a said
4x12 + 2x15 @ 4ohms compared to the same combo at 16ohms?

Crossover?

Crossovers designate certain frequencies to a source.
In most cases, bass frequencies to bass speakers (15s) and higher to regular ones.

This is correct. The 15' cab will act like a subwoofer and probably put out nothing above about 150Hz. The crossover will then put out all frequencies above 150Hz through the 4x12. I don't know the frequencies for sure because it depends on personal preference and output allowance/sweet spots.

If you're a bedroom jammer, then yes. In a band then let the bass player do his job.

this. ^^^^^

guitar is a midrange instrument. decide if you want to play guitar or bass but not both. there is only so much room in the sound wave spectrum for a human ear to hear. dont create mud by doubling your bass players frequincies. years of more experienced ears have determined the rules for what works and what doesnt. dont be arrogant and think you can change a proven track record. you cant.
if it sounds like s#%t in your car. its wrong. if it sounds like s#%t on your ipod, its wrong. if it sounds like s#%t on your 40 dollar boombox, its wrong. rules to follow. not everyone has a great stereo or a million dollar studio that your crappy sound may sound good on. remember that.

I second this notion. With the right amp the 215s can add a hell of a thump to the sound of the 412s. And what I really love doing is running 2 amps, one eq'd for bass going to the 215s, and one eq'd for treble going to the 412s.

Additionally, this thread really got me thinking. I have never seen any pictures of Dime's live rig where any of the 215 cabs were mic'd. I am now questioning whether or not Dime even used the 215s live. And although the 215s may sound awesome playing at home, I have no idea how they would pan out with a bass player in the mix.

You think for one second that one guitar player on a stage the size they played relied on the sound of a couple cabs and a 15 sub for his guitar tone? To power a stage the size they played required micing a couple cabinets at best for stereo sound and running them through monitors and side wedges for stage volume and the mains for the crowd. there would be zero reason to mic a sub also and pipe that in. The sound guy could and would dial his monitors and mains to have whatever frequincies needed. Wouldnt even need subs. Would be no reason for them on their stage. Those things are just marketing at its best to get ignorant musicians to spend money. Might be cool for your bedroom or basement jam, nothing more. Everytime I have played big stages, I couldnt even hear my amps on stage. All I could hear was monitor mix. Besides rockstars only support good gear and never stamp their approval on stuff soley for extra income.
