So was on a hunt for a kerry king but then was told to check out a quick rod. Seems they kick some ass and sound like a hot rodded jcm 800. Any one have one? May be more up my road

Splawn Nitro-best sounding and brutal amp they make. It's next on my list for sure.

I'm endorse Splawn now. If you have any questions PM me and I'll give you the deets. The only one I don't have familiarity with is the newer 22 watt.

yea

quickrod is great for the juiced suped up marshall tone.probably the best solo tone out there right now.
nitro is great for the metal tone.

Im personally selling both my engls to get a bogner uberschall twin jet though. I thought about the fractal real hard but I couldnt respect myself without using tubes.

So someone school me.A quick rod is a souped up Marshall tone.So do you still need an overdrive to boost it like on my JCM800 or is it plug and go brutlzzz?2 channel?

plug in and wicked broots.

it has 3 "stages" of gain (called "gears") you select between, so kinda like plexi, to 800, to ballsed up 800.

the quickrod is 2 channel

the Supercomp i have is just the single broots channels from the Nitro mentioned above.

the quickrod is the marshall jose mod with splawns tweek which is better. Splawn, cameron and fryette all worked for jose arrendondo at one time is what I heard. I dont know if it is true.

I talked to my rep at NAMM about this. He said Scott never worked for Jose and that the circuit is it's own thing. Just to add some light to the question. How close it is to the actual Jose mod though? I dunno.

Plate fed tone stack and cathode follower eliminated and used as extra gain stage are a couple things that make a splawn a splawn. Jose's mods used clipping diodes to add gain, LOTS of it if wanted. Both are good, but Splawns retain more of a "Marshally" grind to me. Diodes smooth out and saturate the tone more easily, like my Chupacabra.

Hmmm good to know. I read it at another big name amp builders forum from the amp builders posts. thanks for clarifying. Wonder why it was said. I'm just gonna stop reading s#%t on the interwebz.

Yeah I wanted to know too because of all the cool "modded" Marshall amps that have popped up over the years. I was talking to Dal from Splawn and I said "so when did Scott work with with Jose?". Dal replied that Scott didn't know Jose more than just from maybe bumping shoulders at trade shows or if they had mutual clients. He said Scott has never worked with or for Jose. I kinda drew a blank after that and we changed the subject. I dunno why that other amp builder said that.

Scott is a great amp builder.... I've been through a bunch of Marshalls trying to capture a certain tone I was chasing and settled on this Splawn 50 watt Competition. Excellent build quality and supreme selection of parts etc. you simply can't go wrong with one Wink

splawns are great amps, i bought my first splawn in 2006 and have owned a couple quickrods, promod, competition and a couple nitros. never had a problem with any of them, i played the competition live and it sounded great with a band mix. they are well built amps for the money and alot of choices in how you want it to look. scott is easy to deal with and i think hes a good guy. you dont need any pedals to boost like you do with a 2203, all of the splawns have plenty of low end and gain.

if there was a weakness in the splawn line it would have to be the clean channel, over the years its gotten better but the early versions had alot of early breakup and was nothing special. its a great amp for solos and lead work but its unforgiving and if you suck it wont cover it up. they are tighter feeling than a marshall and are very clear sounding in the gain.

One tip I got from them is do not buy one with KT88s. They won't warranty those tubes because they have been very unreliable. Now I don't know this from personal experience with them but I originally ordered my Nitro with KT88 and they talked me out of it for the reason I explained above. I have EL34B in mine.

im not sure about the warranty issues but i had a nitro with tungsol el34 and another with kt88 and i liked the kt88 nitro the best, just depends on what ya like but i played my kt88 live and used it for over a year and never had a issue, i really like how the 88 sounded with the nitro.

Yeah the 88s sound better but Scott won't replace them under warranty if they blow within 90s days (or whatever the time period is) like he will with the EL34s. They said they have been getting complaints about the 88s not lasting from clients.
