Just remember to keep the presence just above off, thats the trick with these amps. They can sounds great or sounds like sh1t. It all depends on the user.

Kranks actually sound best with the power switch in the off position. Laughing Worst tube amps I've ever played, they sound nothing like Darrell. If you want tubes, get a 6505, best metal amp for the money ever. But you won't get Dime tone from any tube amp.

Really? A lot of big name bands use them. Still one of the best selling/popular amps out there. Seems to be one of the most reliable also

Gee... I feel stupid for having one Confused Rolling Eyes

You obviously need to work on your ability to dial in amps, or play through them, i don't know.

The 5150 is awesome, and it's far from "entry level junk".

If you hate the 5150 so much, i can't imagine how much you're gonna hate the krankenstein Laughing

I have an uberschall and a roadking and I still mind myself missing my 5150. I'll have another one some day. Kinda always thought that the more I spent on a head, the better it would sound. Now, that said they do sound better just not 1500 bucks better imho. The 5150 is a fantastic amp. I personally did not bond with the Krankenstein but I did really like the rev1. I had one for a few months and sold it, for a 6505+ actually.

I've got a Lickliter modded Krankenstein+ sitting here. It sounds much better than stock, but I'd still take a 6505 over it any day IMO.

I herd from a good source, and all over the net the first krankenstein sounds way better. A friend of mine owns the axe palace in mass that only sells high end gear. you name it he has it. VHT ,engl, bogner, rivera, ect. He loves the krank and told me it slays for rhythm ! one of the most brutal sounds he herd do to its tube layout with a solid state circuit witch only the first version has!! It will be here Friday maybe ill mic my cab and post a clip.

You got it backwards. Your Marshall cab made your Peavey head sound like crap. I made that mistake once. The 5150/6505 really needs the Peavey cabinet. The difference is amazing.

Just took the chassis out and did some digging. Looks like it blew a screen grid resistor on a power tube socket.. Should be a cheep fix. Thinking it was in dyer need for a retube

Well soldered in a new 750ohm 5 watt screen grid resistor, cleaned the board up, installed new tubes, found 505 plate voltage, so 505 / 25watts plate Dissipation x .7 is 34 ma. so biased the amp to 33.8. amps sounded ok. Broke out the jar of 12ax7 preamp tubes(JUST TO CLEAR THIS UP THE STOCK EH TUBES KILL THIS AMP!) went to town for about 2 hours. after trying every combo i can think of i settled with V1 Sylvania STR 12AX7, and tung sol's for the other three. And bam . This amp kicks major ass!!! with a maxon od808 up front its the s#%t!!!. best way to describe it is damageplan to a tee!!! So yes stock bias and stock pre amp tubes its hard to dial it in and does kind of sound like crap but a little amp tweaking and TUNING its bad ass. Has alot of bass and can get muddy fast! any one can dial in a amp and say it sucks but TUNING it is a another story !!!!

The amp with out a boost sounds like a duel recto to me.. I have noticed that they also love a good bias. from the factory it was under 30ma. sounded thin

You might see if you can find a Mid-90's , say 96' 5150 Combo...Heck even YouTube one & watch a clip , they have WAY different sounds! & Most people who sold their Combos ( like me )WANT THEM BACK! I Promise you will LOVE that Amp Wink ...& if you don't well Confused Shocked

Why not? Whats "not your thing" about a combo?
I have a few peavey combos that rock hard and are just as loud as the head and cab version.

Yeah but did you ever play the 5150 Combo , NOT the Head!
You might see if you can find a Mid-90's , say 96' 5150 Combo...Heck even YouTube one & watch a clip , they have WAY different sounds! & Most people who sold their Combos ( like me )WANT THEM BACK! I Promise you will LOVE that Amp Wink ...& if you don't well Confused Shocked
i would never play a combo but thanks. just not my thing

Try it before you Knock it! I am not a fan of the 5150 Heads Unless they have some kind of effects , I would bet $5 on a Gentlemans Bet you try a "Stock" 5150 Combo you would LOVE it & if you don't , then you might as well send the KRANKENSTEIN back along with the X2! Again the Combo was a Different Amp, at least listen to one on YouTube while playing Metal , think one guy Compares, Sheffields to Vin.30's , his MIC ain't the Best but still Rocks! & it's STOCK! Just try it before you knock it, be open-minded, again I don't Jam the 5150 Heads either , this is different and they DO NOT make em' anymore & a Highly sout after amp!!!

I always heard you just gotta have that perfect setting by messing around with it. I have heard good KRANKS. & Tones come out of them I would personally never buy one tho , but to each his own.
