Yeah, dummy cabs are all for show... and that's part of what people are paying for. Does anyone think his leather outfit makes him sound better? |

Yes because we all know that low mids reflect off of leather in to the audience better than any other material. |

Rule of thumb I think. Any band that has more than 2 cabs per guitarist on stage of the same amp are running dummy cabs. I can see running one or two live, for wet/dry, stereo effects etc. Any more than that these days and they are not real. Of course you have guys like Joe Perry that run 6 different amps on stage so that's a different story altogether. |

I finally realized all those cabs Priest had on stage were not real after I saw this vid.

That's not the half of it. When we go on tour I'm ordering 3 dummy cabs so I can put a full stack on both sides of the drums next to the banners. Sh1t will look dope. Splawn said they will make me dummies that match my real cab for cheap.
I took this photo at the last BLS show in Vancouver. Nick and Zakk each have a cab in front of the drums that is live, and each have one cab live on the stacks on either side. They both run stereo chorus so this helps get a wider tone. All of the cabs on stage are full size though. Each one has its own road case. I watched them unpacking them. I didn't get any photos behind the wall but nothing back there is plugged in except the fake heads and one cab on either side.

For their Screaming for Vengeance tour, they had an upper set of amps too! It looked really cool. It didn't take long to notice only a couple amps had their lights on! But 99% of the audience just went WOW! |

In a perfect world there's no reason you can't mike up a 6 watt amp and put it throught the P.A. and be happy. But then you're at the mercy of the sound guy and the quality of the P.A.
If you're big enough and headlining, feel free. But if you're playing medium sized places, with a different P.A. every night, too small of a P.A. or some clueless local sound guy like the owners brother-in-law, it can drive you nuts! |

Nice to see you've come to the dark side...
The best tone I ever got was with three amps. Left, right and center. Usually with an analogue stereo chorus on the L+R (hey it was the '80s!) and sometimes with just a 20 Millisecond delay on the other side to make it fatter/wider (I think it was 20... hmmmm). Always check to make sure the delayed side is the other side of the stage if you're only using two amps, it can really mess up your playing otherwise. The center was set up with less gain to give me more bottom end (gain and stereo chorus kind of eats bottom, you notice it more when you're loud), and a distortion pedal and a 800hz boost only on the center for leads.

Maybe for that tour, but if you look at the Electric Eye video from US Festival their amps were all offstage. |

Nothing looks more impressive then a wall of Marshall stacks, real or not, powered or dummy
Yngwie has one of the most impressive walls of Marshall I have ever seen. Judas Priest was another |
