I decided to treat myself... Laughing I was in my local shop and the manager of the guitar department, who knows me all too well, took me aside and offered this to me at just over cost. I couldn't pass it up. I got it for a little less than what a LPC costs.

Kirk Hammet V #70!

Well considering I have not sold a guitar in a long time I would say a while. I have had my ZV since 2010. I think the last guitar I sold was my Matt Tuck V about a year and a half ago. As long as I stick to Gibson I'm OK. Wink

Don't know if I could even pay that considering its still a few thousand more than a regular V. But if it works for you Lanning, that's cool.

A Les Paul Custom is a few thousand more than a non custom. I can't say I understand your point. Any of the custom shop stuff is more expensive regardless of the model. They are also built with better woods and more attention to detail. Plus they hold their value better in the long run.

Exactly right dude. If I was to buy a LPC on that wall it would have been the one just next to my left shoulder. That's 1 of 25 LPCs with trans-cherry over gold top! When it wears through the red you get gold! So sick and it played awesome. It was $3850... I was actually going to buy that before I got the offer for this. Originally the V was $5500 but I got it for $3200, so right out the door I have made a smart investment. Plus I love flying Vs and Kirk is one of my favorite guitarists.

bazzabalboa wrote:

It's got a 3 piece neck made of mahogany sides with a maple center. It's got a custom made bridge that is made by the same company that made the bridge on Kirk's 79V. They don't make it anymore and tooled up to just do this run. The wood selection is of higher grade. They took Kirk's and made a 3D lazer mapping of it and re-created this to exact specs. It's even got Schaller M6 tuners instead of the originals but has the screw holes that make it look like the originals were replaced. The relic'ing was done to look like Kirk's 79 as well. Lastly, it's made in the custom shop where they build better guitars than the regular run of Gibsons. It's got mojo where a non custom Gibson feels like every other Gibson. (in my opinion). I haven't played a Gibson standard run guitar yet that plays as well as a custom shop model.

Kirk signed something like the first 150 didn't he?

I walked into a guitar shop in London and saw one of the workers noodling on one of those and I haven't seen one since. I'd love to check one out. Happy NGD!

There are 150 total and Kirk signed the first 50. The signed ones are like $2k more though. Identical guitar just a signature makes is worth that much more. Laughing

OK here are the differences on this V compared to a regular Gibson V.

This V's body is 1 piece of mahogany whereas regular Vs are 2 or more.

The neck is 3 piece quarter sewn mahogany with a maple spline in the center

The fret wire is from Jescar who makes superior fret wire compared to the run of the mill stuff you find out there

Custom made bridge that mirrors the bridge on Kirk's own guitar

The guitar was hand aged to look like Kirk's guitar

Other than that the specs are otherwise similar to a standard V but they differ slightly due to this one being modeled after a 79 V, not what they are using as the standard Vs.

Most importantly though it's made by the luthiers in the custom shop instead of the standard run.

I have read a lot of comments on line that people think they can just buy the regular V and throw EMGs in it and it's the same. This couldn't be any farther from the truth.

No I didn't but I love those amps. They have so many awesome high gain amps there but I always migrate towards the Dr Z stuff to try out guitars. I prefer to hear them clean and sexy Laughing Anyone can layer on gain stages until the universe implodes Laughing That Hiwatt behind my leg is awesome too.

I disagree with this statement. i would recommend the kiddies trying out guitars on amps out of your niche doesnt make sense. if you play metal as your trade, you should try said gear out in your niche. it may sound amazing for blues but you dont play that. it needs to work for your niche. thats like a soccer player trying out a jock with no cup when hes going to be playing american football.

It comes that way new from GIbson... It's worn to look exactly like Kirk's.

You think if you take the tape off it will look new nderneath, or even more worn?

Still looks pretty cool though.

V's have been growing on me over the last couple years.

I betcha the tape was put on because of scars from a bullet / stud belt. I had to put leather on my Ibbys, because those damn stud belts gouged the backs on my guitars.

I guess that's what happens when record sales go down. I can remember a certain bass player not wanting to sign an autograph for a fan, citing his name would be worth $$$ someday. He now paints cars, does tattoos, and I think he paints the Dean Guitars too in Bakersfield CA.

I have one of those POS Mighty Mite brass bridges still. It was so bad, I went and bought a Genuine Gibson TOM for my LP Standard. Now the guitar plays like a dream. I'll give you my MM bridge if you need a spare. Just get me a pass to NAMM next year. Laughing

Yep the regular production line can't be bothered by setting up a guitar properly. Though I tell Guitar Center every time I buy a new one from them to have their tech set mine up for free. and it plays just fine afterwards. In fact I had DannyJoe Carter set mine up, and then he got fired because he spent to much time setting up a customer's guitar right.

I have read a lot of comments on line that people think they can just buy the regular V and throw EMGs in it and it's the same. This couldn't be any farther from the truth.

That's what I was trying to get across to you. I'd rather save a few bucks. You see the guys here raz me on my Buy USA stuff. Well I'm not into spending money to have some monkey in the custom shop run a screwdriver in the wood of a guitar to relic it. Laughing

I think this is more meant to be a reliplica of Kirk's - If you want the same guitar but new I'm fairly sure tehy still make it. His original wasn;t a custom shop or anything - you'd just buy the stanadard and put EMG's i it. The whole point of this one is to make it look exactly like kirk's.

Its a limited run piece - I think its cool. Should appreciate in value in teh future.

No you can't. The regular V doesn't have Jescar frets, doesn't have the Leo Quan Bad Ass bridge that is now discontinued (a company called Crazyparts in Germany made them for Gibson)... A regular V doesn't have a one piece body, doesn't have the duck bill headstock and has a different neck joint.... It also doesn't have a 3 piece neck made of mahogany sides with a maple spline. It's also not made in the custom shop. Can you buy a Les Paul Studio and make it the same as a Les Paul Custom? No you can't. You can buy a black V and put EMGs in it and relic it yourself, yes, but that's not the same as this.

Also I may add I got this guitar for more than $2000 less than the selling price on the hang tag.

Doesn't Gibson still make a 70's reissue V though? one that has a one piece body, the duck bill headstock, the different neck joint and a 3 piece neck? or am I mistaken?

granted, no bridge or fretwire.

I'm satisfied, it's your money, spend it the way you feel. But a minor correction is needed. The Leo Quan Badass Bridge looked like this. I had one on my 1957 Les Paul TV when I bought it back in 1975.

I still say the bridge on your KH V, is a Mighty Mite. Chris Holmes has them on his guitars. BTW we had dinner together a few weeks back.

My bad, I read about the bridge on some other site. I'm trying to find out what it is a remake of. I found the company in Germany who makes these now and I think I'm going to get another one as a backup for parts just in case. I don't think they were the original company that made them but you never know. Worst case scenario though an ABR1 will fit right in its place with no modifications needed.

Cool guitar, I don't understand the attraction of these types of guitars from a players perspective, this is a collectors thing. I think its cool you have the ability to get what you want. Any collectors guitar scored at cost is a good investment.

I believe the neck is just three piece mahogany no maple spine, that would period correct ...

Checked and Gibson spec's this one as three piece mahogany. Not sure where your getting the maple spine.

Its all good though ! great git !

If you go to the Gibson site and then click the link for the guitar and then at the top click on specs it states the following: "Mahogany Neck/Maple Spline"

The front page has 'with a glued-in, three-piece, quarter-sawn mahogany neck"

I assume the specs page was more in depth. I could be wrong but it's as I read it. Maybe they are wrong? I dunno.

I totally understand it's a collector's guitar but I wanted it more to play and have fun with. If I hadn't been able to get it for that price I wouldn't have bought it to begin with though. The regular price was too much for what it is but at the price I snagged it for it will make a great stage guitar with mojo and a story behind it Wink

I did a search on the Mighty Mite website, and they don't even make that bridge anymore. But they are make a badass retrofit. That is what Mighty Mite were good at in the 80s. Offering another avenue so DiMarzio didn't hold a monopoly on replacement parts.
