spent the weekend in san fran cali with new girlfriend and mike from dar. very surreal, indeed. i can certainly say it was more about the trip than the amp.
mike from dar (designer/builder) and i have been talking for years, long before the sales guys and videos. we both finally made good on our threats, and we made time for a weekend. my new girl susan (as many of you now know via facebook), made the trip very easy indeed. all of my friends whom set us up said "just let her handle it all, just pack a bag." it couldn't have been better advice.
we flew first class on virgin america. drank hard on the way there, and slept hard on the way back. susan booked us a room in palo alto (that we only slept in) and a camero convertible (that we never drove). mike took care of us all weekend. friday night we went straight to his shop, and i tested the amp. i knew it would do what i wanted right away, and i shut it back off. we kept talking until well into the night before we finally called it a night.
on saturday mike took us to san fran for a look around. i love this city for the art. of course, all day mike and i are talking about plate voltages, tone stacks, etc. we got back to palo alto in time to have dinner at his dad's italian resturant. the food was unreal, but the 40 year old mexican waiter was the devil himself.
he said the others called him "el diablo" because of the music he listened to. "oh yeah?" i wondered aloud...."what bands do you like?"
he says "gorgoroth.......burzum...."
i almost choke. i turned to mike and ask how long has this guy worked here. he says "over 8 years." i am still convinced i was being punked.
on sunday, we boxed up the amp and took it to fedex. then mike said he had a suprize for me. he took us to the grounds of stanford university. there resides a permanent display of some of the sculpter rodins's works.....including "the gates of hell". i have know this piece since i was young and saw it in one of my art books. i stood there before it, with tears running down my face. i thanked my mother for showing me the art world, and encouraging me to find art even in the smallest places.
mike and i have been talking for years about doing this. i never thought it would be one tenth as cool as it was. thanks mike, for everything. see you in april in texas. this will be my only plug for the warbeast destroy cd release party in fort worth april 6th.
i cant thank mike enough. his hospitality was unmatched, and was easy all the way around. and to my dearest susan, thanks for making this so easy for me. i am forever in your debt.
oh yeah, i bought an amp. dave and i cant believe the brutal tones.
