Hey, I am a University student in the UK currently studying Popular Music. This is my last year now and I have to produce a dissertation, so my chosen topic is on the sustain properties of an electric solid-bodied guitar, and more specifically, the neck joint and the bridge type.

If you could all take the time to fill in this short questionnaire I would be entirely grateful!

Thanks for your time Smile

Mike

Had it done with comments, apparently hit some key that it didn't like.......and the program erased everything prior to submission.

I tried but on page 3 it crapped out on me and I typed a lot so I don't want to go back and re-do it all again. I think you have a good survey but there are a lot of key factors that effect sustain that up to page 3 I didn't see mentioned. I'll list some of them here.

Set neck, Vs. Neck through Vs. Bolt on is irrelevant if the guitars are different thicknesses, different weights and made of different types of tonewoods. A thin, neck through guitar may not have the sustain of a thick set neck or bold-on guitar. If you're comparing two very similar guitars then there may be a difference but again it comes down to materials too. The neck through will be stronger though but that's not a tone thing.

Also the bridge type... There is a difference between brass, stainless steel and graphite... Bridges have different materials which also transfer sustain different. A Kahler wasn't one of the choices either and that offers the most metal to wood connection. Also string gauge effects sustain too. Also are we talking open strings Vs fretted notes?

There are a lot of variables which could lead to too many open questions. I didn't get to see past page 3 but if you are doing this for school, please make sure you are thorough.

What's this "bolt-on neck" option? Never heard of it Laughing

Laughing

I agree with Lanning. You can't compare a set neck Epi Les Paul with a Made in USA bolt-on Music Man, and vice-versa. There are too many variables. But nevertheless, I have done the survey Smile

Where are you in the UK?
