I was never a Grateful Dead fan - but always liked the way this guitar looked, thought it was a bc rich custom for some reason or another - what is this thing?

I'll do some digging, but I'm pretty sure that it's not an Alembic. I think it was made by a boutique-type luthier.

Various sources give the guitar builder's name as Stephen Cripe. It's a pretty interesting story.

Here is the Alembic History in detail if anyone is interested:

http://www.alembic.com/family/history.html

This is the meaning behind the Alembic logo which is pretty cool in itself:

http://www.alembic.com/info/logomeaning.html

While it may very well may have been built by someone else it was still all Alembics inovations that were used. Alembic basically started in conjunction with the Grateful Dead to develop a Bass and guitar that would produce the sound that they were looking
for.

For you bass players here is the Alembic special for this month check out the burl wood on this one.

While I may be a bluzman I have one of the largest collections of Grateful Dead recordings in the New England area, including over 50 bootleg concert recordings I did from going to shows myself. I saw the Dead perform over 250 shows.
