Tomorrow is Day Seven of the "Jim Goes Cold Turkey" Project.
From a pack of smokes a day for fifteen or so years to nothing.
I'm fine. Really.
The temper is just a little short, but nothing worse than usual. If it's edible, it's fair game. Cooked or not. I've drank enough water to bloat like a whale and make my molars float. I can notice the improved breathing already.
It's not the physical addiction nearly as much as breaking the overall habit of it. Oh, the withdrawal is there, though. Walked around light headed as hell last Friday.
If any of you folks feel like blowing off some Forum Aggression, send it my way. I'll take the distraction and vent some of my own in the process.

Man quiting smoking was one of the hardest things I ever did - harder than a lot of "adictive" stuff. Best of luck to you Jim - and if the going gets tough try accupuncture - I swear by it |

I don't even wanna tell you the stuff I had to kick, back in the day. Smoking was a tuff one for sure. You awalys came across to me as a guy who was too damn smart to have ever done something as stoopid and vile as smoking, FWIW. A little incentive for ya: Start up again, an I'll kick yer a$$! |

Something that I'm glad I'll never start, but best of luck to ya! When I was a kid I begged my dad to quit. He never did, probably never will, till it kills him. But whether you're doing it for yourself or someone else, I hope you make it. |

Thank you all for the words of encouragement.
Those little root beer-flavored candies shaped like a barrel have been the sugarfix of choice. And dry-roasted peanuts. Plain M&M's.
Vanilla bean ice cream. Fudgesicles.
I think I'm over the cravings. Now it's just a matter of continuing to tell myself "no".

When you get your sense of smell and taste back you'll be glad you quit. Better start buyin the low fat, low sugar stuff now because you're in for a metabolic shock if it hasn't started yet |

I started doing Atkins almost two years ago and dropped about 35 pounds. I'll be damned if I'm going to gain it back because I quit smoking gerts.
The grace period of eating whatever is officially over. Especially after those Nutter Butter cookies I had when I donated blood this morning. There's a side benefit! The blood pressure was down significantly this morning during the screening from the last time I had it checked.
Again, thanks for the support. If any of you other folks are thinking of doing it, don't hesitate.

Watching a buddies Dad go through a long drawn out gurggling death dragging his loved ones with him as he coughed up black puss, got me to stop cold turkey.
Free'd up a few bucks for more gear too, double plus! |

Good on ya, Jim. I quit last November. I -still- get wicked cravings at odd times though. Like you say, getting over the habit part is weird. How many times have you gotten in the car and thought "I've forgotten something..." so far?

wow, everyone has the same problems as I. except, smoking wasnt my problem, I enjoyed a cig, but they were too gross to constantly smoke. after a couple months of smoking i had had enough. DIPPING was my huge problem. that stuff is SOOOO bad for you. but ive noticed that its not really the physical dependancy of nicotene, its the psychological dependancy. things like going to see a movie i think "DAMN, if i could pack a lip" or after a meal your brain automatically associates being full, with dipping. and as far as the "smoking or dipping for a celebration" of some sort. WOW, you couldnt be more right. when dime died, I had quit for 4 months, then started up cause of his death. I know that sounded bad, it obviously wasnt a celebration, but it was a HUGE blow to me and i could i need a lip to fell comfortable. I think we all agree to just QUIT EVERYTHING. its sooo worht it |

Good luck Jim!
And having said that, quitting smoking
has nothing to do with luck, but
determination. You'll make it if you
want to.
Stay determined. |

Way to go JammerML!
Drink lots of water. And I mean a LOT of water. Flush the body.
I've been eating dry-roasted peanuts as the diversion. Went through an entire big can in the last week.
Stay busy. Any idle time is immediately tied in with "time for a smoke".
Recognize those times when you automatically reach for one(in the car/after a meal/walking the dog/etc.) and meet them head-on. Denial does not work here.
There's also the side benefit to it. "Honey, I'm really jonesing for a cigarette. Whadda ya say we go upstairs and we take my mind off of it? C'mon, I need a little help here to get through this tough time...." You never know. It might work. If nothing else, it makes light of the moment.
Stay determined and do it. You can, you know.

you got it licked now Jim, it took me about 7 days to get over the habit of having something in my hand. Lots of gum, candy, water, food, you name it, I ate it. On oct. 18 it will be three years since I quit. Best thing I could have ever done. Bad thing is, my wife still smokes and I hate it, its like licking an ashtray to me, eehck. Bad thing is about quitting after you have already done so for so long is you can pick one up at anytime and go where you left off. Its not as bad anymore but the thought is still there and always will be. |

As for what was being smoked, it would be tobacco. The other stuff was given up ages ago.

When I get to "jonesing" really bad.... for whatever reason... I do situps and pushups and drink water. Most any chemical addiction can be overridden with adrenaline and endorphines.... I know addictive personalities who become exercise addicts... not a bad thing. |

well considering its all about personal preference, I thought smoking was more disgusting than dipping. after a cig I felt gross inside, felt constricted and smelled likeshit. after dipping i had to rinse out my mouth and brush my teeth, hence my feeling that smoking is grosser than dipping----dipping is companies like skoal and timberwolf. you take a "pinch" of tobacco and put it between your teeth and gums. then you squeeze the tobacco juice out and spit. its nasty shiza |

skoal is dip, redman and beechnut are chaw (as some people call it). both are different but pretty much the same principle and equally as deadly |

I fully understand the difference between "dip" and "chaw". I went to a high school where the rifle racks in the pickup windows actually had rifles. |

You guys were high-tech. Where I went to school most of the pickemup trucks had stars and bars in the back windows... and baseball bats or axe handles on the gun racks. |

OK Guys, I quit in July and have struggled like a bi tch. My voice is hoarse and while Im at mr Dr for routine stuff she says " you really need to get that looked at by a speciaist". Yup, went this morning and gawd damn, I have a growth just below my vocal cords that is interfering with my voice. It isn't too big bu there is a 65% chance that it is malignant. I go in for surgery next week. If you smoke quit! If you don't, stay away from it (second hand too, if you can). If you yonger guys don't and you start, I will personally come to where you are and kick your a ss. If I survive that is.
Save lives, burn the tobacco fields. |

Last Friday night, I had a dream where I had a cigarette.
After five or six drags, I realized what I was doing and got fairly pissed at myself. Then came the moral question of it. Do I......a) stub it out and get right back on the wagon to prove that I've really gotten over it....... or b) finish it, because you've already screwed it up.
I'm sure there's some deep psychological explanation to this whole thing. Freud would probably have some insight, but he was a cokehead that wanted to nail his mother, so who cares what he thinks.
My summarization is that I've physically quit, but haven't quite convinced myself mentally that the tar/nicotine is gone and ain't coming back. |

To clarify..........
I haven't cheated. Except for taking big nose hits off of people that have recently had one.
If I go to a doctor years from now and he tells me "you've got six months to live", I think my response will be "well, then give me a smoke. I've been craving one for the last xx years." |

It's been 10 years for me and the smell of tobacco is so repugnant to me that I haven't thought about smoking in years. I had a dream recenetly where I was about to light up . . . then I woke up. As far as that pesky monkey goes . . . well I wouldn't temp fate by deluding myself that "one won't kill me" . . . but the next 10, 000 might. |

k....I'm on board!
Can't remember if it was Sunday or Monday...pretty sure it was Monday, either way - it feels like an eternity! Anyway one of those days I sucked down two squares one after the other and haven't had one since! Haven't been drinking either, that's only until I feel like I could face a buzz without smoking...
I've been inspired.....

I never smoked, did drugs or drank much (a six pack will last me a month).
But I have a caffeine addiction. People laugh about it, but it's tough getting off caffeine. I was a multiple Coke/Starbucks/Red Bull daily drinker.
I haven't had caffeine for a week now. The first 3 days I had terrible headaches. The last 4 I've been tired and listless all day. A Coke will really pick me up right now, but I'm not going to do it.
Best of luck to all of you quitting smoking. |

To BillyBadAss and AWriterSoul.............
You guys can do it. Don't think about not having it. Drink lots of water.
To Sir Dennis............
Congrats on the one year!
To Mark..........
I feel your pain with the caffeine. I had to make sure to not replace one addiction with the other.
As for me, I think Saturday is the four month anniversary. I've hit the point where the cigarette smoke really stinks to me. Hasn't cut down on the urge for one, but it really does smell bad.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, so check this out:
I am two (2) beers away from polishin' off a beloved twelve-pack!!......dig it: HAVE NOT SMOKED A SINGLE CIGARETTE!!!
First alcohol I've had since I "pulled the trigger" on the cancer sticks!
A mild mile-stone...but to a ragin' alcoholic like me...a milestone, none-the-less!!
I'm actually celebrating the meeting of my muse..... , though sadly, we are not together...
...girls sure can make us act funny, huh?!?
God, I indeed LOVE this place!!!
*edit*
Almost forgot to mention: Was a little chillier than I had hoped for when I went to get pet food...donned the leather, and low and behold...a hauntingly familiar lump in my inside pocket...
still haven't even pulled them out to throw them away!!! Screw those death sentences, right!!!????
I think I'm gonna make it out of the fog, my friends!! |

Quitting smoking is easy... the only people who say it is hard are those who are not willing to sweat it out... or want to sell a "remedy" for smoking...
I used to smoke a pack a day of Cowboy Killers (Marlboro Reds) and I found that if I don't put the cigarettes in my mouth and light them... the smoking stops... it's that easy. Not like cigarettes can jump into your mouth and light themselves right? I did pushups and situps and rode my bike every day... made myself sweat... got hooked on adrenaline instead... not a bad thing at all.
Willpower > Dependency.
It does not take more than a month to detox from nicotine... the rest is all psychological. |

Thought Id keep it in this thread rather than start a new one
I know there are few of us still in the stages of quitting. Day 2 for me. On patches. Working a treat as well, feel a ton better already for not having lit up
Im out tonight with friends, so that means beer & smoky atmosphere. Now to test my resolve but I have a feeling I can do it just fine |

You can do it.
There's always the sympathy angle for tonight. Locate someone appealing at the bar/club and tell them that you're on Day Three. Tell them that you just need some moral support and someone that'll be there for them.
Could be a double payoff. Someone to help you through the evening and meet someone new. It's an angle, but what the hell.
Good luck. Tomorrow is four months for me. |

Made it all the way to a hangover without a nasty cigarette just fine!!
Your right, Jim....I DO rule!!!

Sounds goofy, but what I think we crave as much as the smoking, is the relaxing and deep breathing that goes with it. So, when I quit, I would stop and 'breathe' like I WAS smoking, when stress/cravings would attack. I was absolutely sick of smoking when I quit, too. And that makes a big difference in the outcome. Been 4, 5 or maybe 6 years now for me. Don't remember. I dont think about them anymore. |

How's everybody doing with their respective battles??
I think about throwing in the towel more and more as of late.
I still haven't had one since I first got on board with you guys.....
But I sure want one.
Which would most definately lead to thousands....
Tryin' to stay strong, brethren....
