Got my Z today. Of course Dave's sealed it up good in a shipping box which has a "don't open for 24 hrs". Well, I took it out of the box but have not opened the case. To tell you the truth, the case feels the same as the guitars under my bed. Should I:

1. leave it alone until tomorrow.

2. give it a couple of hours and open the latched to slowly vent the axe.

3. go crazy (sorry, already there) Very Happy

thanks,

Jack

Jack,
DO NOT open the case let everything get acclimated temp wise, just because the outside of the case may feel room tempp the guitar itself isn't. Let it sit.

Man Bill, that guitar sounds really nice. I'm sure it's worth the wait.

Yeah, I'm staring at the case trying to get through it. The actual guitar is on my avatar, that will have to do until I can get a digital camera!

Yes, isn't that wild. The first time I heard him use that voice was on The Flash tv show, i think he played this guy called the Trickster. Mark also narrates documentaries shown on the discovery channel and the like. Hey, it's a check! Very Happy

I'm no expert in guitars, but I see no reason why you can't open it. Temperature might affect it slightly, but I would think that mainly it would be humidity. I mean, it's just made of wood, the same woods that a sh*t-ton of other products are made of. I just wouldn't tweak anything on it until it "settles in".

The worry here isn't about the wood, it's about the finish. I don't know about the poly finishes, but nitro will crack like crazy if you open the case before the guitar has warmed up.

That's like being told "don't drive a new car hard until the break in period is over"..

I never Broke in a car....

That didn't come out right. Maybe you better let it sit(right next to your bed tonight).

I hear ya! But I guess I'll hold off. I can stare at my avatar and my wallpaper for the rest of the night. I can sniff the outside of the case if I get desperate...........yep, it smells good!

The guitar came from the Illinois area where it is probably 35-40 degrees and went to where it is 50-60. Winter air by nature is dry 35-40% humidity, I am sure Alabama is probably around 55-60% humidity right now. Not knowing what type of heat you have in the house or if you have any additional humidifiers running it just isn't worth the risk. I have forced hot air in my home and I have to run a humidifier to keep the place at 58% humidity. I saw a brand new guitar split the top on itself in a matter of 6 hours one day because it wasn't acclimated right(granted it was an acoustic) but it was a CF Martin and it was mine. So believe me it can happen.

Extreme temperature fluctuations (for example, from outside temperature like in the back of an open ended UPS truck to your warma dn toasty 80 degree house) can cause some mild warpage in the neck (easily fixed-trtuss rod), checking in the finish (hard to fix, more prone on real nitro finishes and hand rubbed finishes), and frets to work their way loose as the metal heats and cools at a differant rate than the surrounding wood. It would be advisable to wait. If you want to open it in the morning, that would probably be allright. If it's been in your house a good 8 hours, you can uunhook the latches, and let the air flow in naturally, but DONOT OPEN THE LID as hard as that may be, that would be too much warm air in all at once. With the latches open, you'll be A-OK to play her in the morning before you head to work or whatever. HTH!

That's terrible about the Martin. Who would think that could happen! Well, I had decided to keep baby in the case after you gave your first reply Bill. Now, maybe I'll even give it some extra time! Very Happy

Dinasty, if I pop the latches, I know I'll open it!! I can wait.

Since I can't play the Z, I created another avatar. Rolling Eyes
