OK, who made the seller an offer he couldn't refuse?

He could have just come to his senses and kept it. It could be worth much more in coming years. It certainly is a Dean investment piece. |

This is what is posted on Ebaaaaaaaay!
The seller ended this listing early because the item is no longer available for sale.

I didn't buy it (although i intended to). elliott didn't buy (although he would have) dean z didn't buy it (although he did contact the seller, who never returned the call). i have a feeling that one of the following possibilities will be found to be true.
1. we will never know who the buyer was, nor will we know the price.
2. the guitar will resurface in the next few months when the buyer needs the cash.
3. the seller, who won't answer anyone's phone calls, never owned the guitar in the first place. he may have acquired the pics from someone who really owned the guitar. the whole sale may have been a scam.*
maybe when the forum is restored we will see some pics and get a report from a happy buyer who now owns one of the most collectible Dean guitars in existence. only time will tell.

I was up your way once Dim. I spent a few days in Murmansk back around 1980 or so. Ahh the good old days of the Cold War. I was "visiting" a university they had there that only taught US History and the English language. Rather odd wouldn't you say? |

I'm sure there's more to it. I'll bet someone here or affiliated with Dean got the guitar thru the ol' eBay backdoor and is keeping quiet about it. The seller had to promise not to divulge any info on the buyer. That's my theory. In a few days it will be hanging on someone's wall as part of their collection and it will be years before anyone finds out about it. |

This guitar, and the sale dissapearance, even received attention on the JCF forum. Conspiracy theories abound.

I'm reluctant to say anything on this matter. However, my conscience will not rest until I tell what I know.
A few days ago, I was fiddling around with a camcorder we'd bought. I was sitting in the chair trying out some of the features, the zoom, etc. and that particular auction was on the PC screen. While the camera was running, Dani came in and hit the "reload" icon. When it reappears, the auction has ended and all bids have been cancelled.
A little while later, I was playing that tape through the TV to see the picture quality and how some of the things came out. When the tape got to the part where Dani hit "reload", there was a noticeable flicker on the screen. I hit the "stop" button on the camcorder and backed it up. Playing it again on slow-motion(kind of a frame-by-frame thing...), some odd things showed up. Something flashed up about a bid by someone with the eBay handle "GrassyKnoll" and another bid by "TexSchBookDep". The following frames show all mention of both bidders being erased, then the previous bids being cancelled.
I mentioned something to someone about this and, within a few hours, there was a knock on the door and guys in dark suits asking questions about the tape. They said things about it being a matter of national internet security, the possible existence of an internet government within a government, assorted conspiracy possibilities and something about a Vintage Dean-For-Cuban Cigars secret trade negotiation. Sounded like a lot of flapdoodle to me until they produced court documents to seize the tape.
Luckily, I'd already made a back-up copy. I'm guessing it will someday be known as the "jif6251 tape".
I'm prohibited from releasing the tape or showing it to anyone. Oliver Stone, however, has contacted me and will make a movie based on this event in a few years with some pretty shaky assumptions on the involved parties and motivations behind the cancellation of the auction.

I sure wish it was!!! I had every intention of tossing a very large bid in at the end myself. I will say for the record that it wasn't me who backdoored it. I just wish whoever it was wouldn't be such an elitest collector type, with the guitar shrouded in mystery for all time. |

When will these people learn. The only reason people offer $X to end an auction early is becase the KNOW somebody else will pay more! $5K? If I had it, I would have paid it and I know a few guys that feel the same way that DO! |
