Something unexpected under the old tree for me...amid the socks, the pull my finger Santa, the purple g-string for ladies (a gag gift), a socket set and assorted other items, my dad left me something unexpected...his .50 calibre muzzle loader...for you non gun nuts out there that is an old rifled barrel with a large piece of lead you manually load as well as load the gunpowder manually and place the cap manually, just like Daniel Boone only with rifling...smoothbores suck and have no accuracy. Just thought I'd share... |

Don,
Years ago when I was a huntin' man I used to go all 3 seasons bow, muzzle loader, and shotgun. Took quite a few deer with my .50 Cal Hawken I had, damn fine gun.

Nice score Don - don't be too hasty to diss smooth bores though. They can be deadly acurate, but it all depends on the quality of the builder and the shooter. I've seen some incredible shooting from old smoothys - of course the shooter was a crack shot with anything you handed him. |

Odd that you get that Don... is he no longer interested in shooting it himself?
Russian Orthodox Christmas isn't till January really, but I did get myself this, since we're on teh subject...
For those not in the know, This is a 1944 WWII Russian Mosin-Nagant PU Sniper Rifle, in origonal condition and configuration. This thing is a real WWII relic, and Was probably used to off many a Nazi German Officer, machine guns crew, tank crew and forward observer. These rifles were also used against our own troops in Vietnam by the NVA, loaned down from Russia and China. Of course, this cost me quite a chunk of change, but this is for my other collection. If you've ever seen teh Movie "enemy at the gates", this is the Russian Sniper rifle they use.
So don, are you actually going to go out and shoot it? Don;t knwo how familiar you are with these, but let m tell you, Muzzleloaders, of either variety cn be Quite accurate. You have to be very careful cleaing though. The powder is very corrossive. won;t hurt your skin but it sucks the moisture out of teh air, making itself damp against the metal. the long and short of it is that if you don't clean one of these the same day after shooting, it'll rust. Be careful out there! |

couldn't daniel boone have used a rifled barrel on his muzzleloader? if memory serves me correctly, this was mostly after the revoloution and rifling technology had already come out and was used by soem of the militia-men during the revoloution.... just wondereded |

I'm not sure about Daniel Boon,e but I'm sure some searchig onGoogle could reveal that answer.
DIM3, they make some stick on bullet hole stickers you could use, people put them on their vehicle's, and they look fairly realistic. If your ML was really shot, it would just splinter the wood all to heck and ruin it's value. |
