Hey what's up fellow axemen!!
Not sure if we have a bunch of LOTR fans in here. However I wanted to tell you all about my amazing adventure.
I was blessed to be able to take place in the Lord of the Rings trilogy marathon yesterday. It began at 1:00 pm and we watched all three movies consecutively. We watched the full version of the first two movies (all the extra scenes added in). And then the premier of the Return of the King started at about 10:00 pm. When it was all said and done the experience ended at about 1:30 in the morning! 12 whopping hours of LOTR mania!
It was amazing! And the third and final movie is increadible. Even if you're not a Lord of the Rings fan you should go see this movie. Of course you'd be smart to rent the first two movies so you know what's going on. anyway, anybody else planning on seeing it?
Oh and sorry I didn't see any Dean guitars there or in the movie.. but i did look..

Are you sure that the "axe" Gimli is using isn't made by Dean?

Yes, it is indeed a custom Dean Axe. Dean himself has verified this. Unfortunately, it is made in Japan, but proximity to the movie set was of utmost importance for this very valuable prop.
Can't wait to see the conclusion of LOTR which from what I have heard dwarfs the other two movies, which I loved. |

I loved Those movies. They are so much better than scum wars or The Maltrix, the league of f*cked up stories. This is to all the would be producers...a 9 yr production makes sure the movie don't suck!!! BIG LOTR FAN. |

Haven't seen I or II, so seeing III would make no sense. I'll rent them some time.
I think I got through the first 50 pages of the trilogy books, put it down and never picked it back up.

Just got back from ROTK and man was it great. Peter Jackson made a work of art. Now I can't wait for the directors cut with all that cut Christopher Lee footage.
Also saw the trailer for Spiderman 2, I'll wait for it to come on cable.

No need to read the books to like the movies. Although, I would recomend renting the theatrical version rather than the extended edition if you didn't read the books. Extended editions add a bunch of stuff that Jackson felt hurt the pace of the movie, more than it added to the development of the characters or plot, so for a non lotr fan, extended editions may seem to drag.
Lady Somerled and I went to see ROTK at the midnight showing here in Tulsa last night. Truely incredible. Can't wait for the extended edition, since they cut over an hour to get the movie down to three and a half hours. |

I liked the first two, my kids are really into them. Great movies. I look forward to seeing ROTK. But 12 HOURS? I'd have an aneurysm.
Too much at one time.

looking forward to seeing rotk this weekend - for those that read the books and saw the movie - I read the ending wasn't correct. Think the extended version will correct this, or wouldnt be possible with how they ended it in the theatrical release (that make sense?) |

A lot of hardcore fans had a problem w/ the way the movie ended, but I thought it was cool. It needed an happy ending. |

Actually the 12 hours wasn't too bad. I mean if you were a marginal LOTR fan then yeah it would be too much.. but crazy fanatics like me.. the time just flew by... The Fellowship dragged a little but that's because I've watched it about 20 times over the last three years.. I didn't really realize I had been sitting in a theater over 12 hours until ROTK was over and then the exhaustion hit like a brick. Man I slept so good the other night. Truly a once in a lifetime event, I do it again in a heart beat.
I liked how they ended the ROTK. I mean I love Tolkien's writing and all, but, the way he ends the LOTR is just horrible.. So I was happy Peter Jackson condensed the ending so much.
Hey Jim, it's ok if you don't like LOTR.. not everybody can get into fantasy. My sister in law thinks it's the dumbest thing and can't understand why it's made so much money. lol

Well, I'm going to see that movie, that's for sure...I own both extended edition DVD's and WILL own the final one too!
Now, trivia question...anyone know any of Peter Jackson's earlier films? And can you relate that to why possibly many in Hollywood disregard him as a major contender when it comes academy award time? |

Yep, we went and thought it was great! Except of course for the chick behind us who yelled "wOOO hOO" every single time Orlando Bloom or Viggo Mortensen appeared on the screen. It was hard for me not to turn around and tell her that droooling was supposed to be SILENT! lol!

Saw it this afternoon with my 13 year old son to close out the series. This one blew them all away and I am in total awe of this masterpiece of filmaking, I will see it again before it leaves the theatre. Incredible piece of work. |

Naked Lunch?
I think the LOTR series has been grossly underrated by those Academy types. I mean, they gave last years Oscar to Chicago! It was ok, but it wasn't that good. LOTR - The Two Towers blew me away! It was far better than Richard f***ing Gere doing a freakin' tapdance at least. |

"Bad Taste" in 1988 or was it 1987. I think this is the biggest reason for people not taking him as a top director.

And who could forget Dead Alive (1992 I think) and The Frighteners (w/ Michael J. Fox and a very dead and very loud ghostly R. Lee Emry...lol)
And there is no way Chicago should have beaten it just as the other film that beat Fellowship should have...but he will always have to live with the fact that his skills as a master FX artist have rendered him a tough sell at the awards |

These movies have surpassed my expectations! I saw it on opening day and then went again on Saturday. I am probably going to go see it again this Friday. I even bought the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy edition of the board game Risk. Now me and my geeky cohorts can battle for control of Middle Earth! |

my wife and i went out and got the LOTR version of monopoly so we could play it with family this Christmas. Did you sign up for the official LOTR weapons give away? If I win Aragorn's sword, I think I'll flip out!!

Yeah, I entered that contest! I am curious to know what the composition of those swords are, realizing that they are props. |

I saw all three and I have to say the entire trilogy is overrated.
I thought the 3rd was way to long, and storywise was lacking substance compared to the previous two.
But then again I never really liked Tolkien or any other fantasy writers aside from Bob Jordan.
I have a hard time with that line of fiction.
Too many made up words to keep straight. lol
It's the same reason I don't play D&D. |

I saw ROTK last Friday night and I am taking Mrs. Brave Dave to see it this Friday. I agree that it was a little lengthy, but it was an incredible film. |

I gave up on Robert Jordan after about seven books of the Wheel of Time series. How many more doorstops does he have to write to put a bow on it and call it an end? To me, those things wandered and had no point to the story until about the final 100-150 pages in each book.
I'll get around to watching LOTR I and II one of these days.

whoa! i thought i was alone in thinking this. too long, overly dramatic, corny dialogue, cliche loaded, it just dragged at some points, i couldn't wait for it to be over. i think people are being won over by the abundance of FX. i felt like i was watching a video game.
Robert Jordan was cool at first but lost my attention after 5 or 6 books.

I saw all three and I have to say the entire trilogy is overrated.
I thought the 3rd was way to long, and storywise was lacking substance compared to the previous two.

I have a hard time with that line of fiction.
Too many made up words to keep straight. lol
It's the same reason I don't play D&D. |

It may seem cliche because LOTR is the originator of modern western fantasy. Everything that you have read/seen since the 60's that is fantasy related has drawn its inspiration from The Hobbit, Lord Of The Rings, and The Silmarillon.
The Conan stories by Robert E. Howard are really good too and have a lot if Lovcraftian overtones (Old Ones and such). It turns out that Lovecraft and Howard were firends and often traded ideas.
Another series done well are the Book Of Sword books by Fred Saberhagen (of Berserker fame).
I am rambling. |

cliches like "evacuate the women and children!" shouldn't they have already done that i mean come on there's 50,000 orcs at the city gates. it wasn't like surprise! we're here!
the scene were the made up orc leader side steps the rock and spits on it. seriously corny, many tough guys movies have similar scenes.
i'll have to see it again to remember more but there were many along the same lines.
I've never read any Conan stories but have read a lot of Lovecraft. Did you know that guy wrote over 100,000 letters to people.
http://www.hplovecraft.com/ good Lovecraft site if you haven't seen it yet. |

Since we've taken a slight sidetrack, another good book series is The Champion Eternal by Michael Moorc0ck. The Elric books within that series are particularly good and allegedly are in development for a movie.

Ahhhhhhh, no. He's the albino ruler of the Dragon Isle of Melnibone. With a sword named Stormbringer that sucks out the soul of whatever gets in its way. It isn't a kid's bedtime story.

OK, I remember that now. I had one of those books and never got around to reading it. He looked like an elf on the cover. It was left behind when my parents moved while I was in the marines, good parents eh?
Sam Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant trilogy is pretty good. So were the first couple Shannara (different author) books IIRC.

yes the shannara series was always one of my favorites.
yes some of the scenes are corny because they are matching the fantasy genre.. just like every horror movie has corny spots because they all match the same thing. what really opened up this story to me is after reading a book, "Waking The Dead" & "Wild At Heart" by John Eldridge.. the theme of personal conflict and realizing your potential.. becoming who God made you to be... I saw that theme so much in LOTR movies. especially Aragorn.. But other major themes that really stuck out to me.. the importance of friendship (sam & frodo).. the ability to overcome fear (Pippin).. being able to forgive your family and restore relationships (eowyn & theoden)...
get past all the 'corny' scenes and focus in on the themes that tolkien was really imparting to the world.. you'll see these movies are very deep, spiritual, and have meaning.
that's my soap box moment...

Ok. I saw Return of the King and while the action was awesome I will admit the editing was in the wrong places, a bit like the first one. When I saw the extended version of FOTR (the first one) I thought they took out alot of great stuff. Also the ending was a little lame compared to the original novel. But the battles more than made up for it. Those trolls and Elephant armardas were awesome!
