Forum Members and Guests ~
The Dean Guitar server became corrupted over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The forum data was the only data we have not able to recover.
We sent the drive from the server to a data recovery specialist and are awaiting an answer. We should know sometime tomorrow (Thursday Dec. 4th). If the forum data is recovered, we of course will bring it back.
At this point, we are wondering if this current forum software is better then the previous software. Please keep in mind that Pete has not yet customized the current software. If we decide to go with this, Pete will add all the features we have all become used to including; the different categories, recent post list, picture posting, etc. If we recover the date, we feel we can import it into this forum software as well.
Looking for your input.
Once again, thanks for all your support and helping to make Dean Guitars and the Dean Forum a big success.
Kindest regards,
Dean B. Z-man |

Dean Do you know if we will be able to get our old PMs back or not??
But on this forum setup the only thing i dont like is that someone can post as guest and anymous (SP?) which could cause problems w/ hostility and not being able to ban them

I like the other style better to be honest, but this one seems to have more options from what I've seen on the Vai forum. I think it's just that I'm used to the other style because that's all I had used for like 2 years until the last few months when I started posting on the Vai and Satch forums. Either way, big thanks to Dean, Elliott, and the Web Team for keeping us updated and allowing us to choose things like this!
Alan
Edit - wanted to add that I don't like that you have to check each individual thread for the section to show up as read. The old board was better...you just had to read what you wanted to read. That'd be more of something to worry about later on tho, when there are individual sections of the forum. |

As long as we have the same basic options I don't really care what it looks like. I really miss the posting pics option though. |

This forum is OK - Yeah I miss the options, but like Dean said if we keep this one Pete will build in the amenities we enjoyed in the old one. If the old data is beyond recovery however we will adapt and we'll just have to start fresh. |

As long as we get all the sections back, I vote for this look.
It's much easier to read, especially since it seems to limit the size of the avatars and other photos that go with everyone's post.
I don't mind all the different photos and stuff people add, but in some cases, it seemingly made the post w i d e r. I found it difficult to have to scroll left to right sometimes to read somebody's post. With this format, everything is the same width and therefore, easier to read.
And I second Lon's thought: The pics upload is the best. That definitely needs to be there.
By the way, Dean -- kudos to you and your web team for reacting so quickly and getting this temporary forum up. Nicely done. |

I liked the old one better, however if it's unrecoverable (though a pity) I can take it.
The 'guest' thing gives me the sh!ts tho. It's like inviting strangers to run into your house to take a dump on your living room rug. Everyone should have to register and log in. |

As was said earlier FLUSH that old stuff. With the exception of the Ser #'s and a couple other posts (less than 10) I'd say flush that stuff. Most of it was flaming or people posting non-sense to up there site rating from Newbie to GOD!.....
Of course I would never stoop to such tactics

the only problem might have been that it was 2 1/2 yrs of information on the server. JPG file size has doubled with resoltion improvements and can easilly eat more memory than you think. Then you look at the PS upload site where you have close to 10,000 different images. Though it might be nice to recover the data I think it would be impractical, however to do it as the server might crash again. The only thing I could think of is to do like other sites and have a cut off point that automatically delete a page after a period of time. This will accomplish two things, first is it would reduce the amount of information from overcoming the server. Second it also removes unread threads by deleting it if there are no responses after a certain amount of time, thus creating room for more information or BS. |

Bring back the old forum, there was a lot of great reference material and Dean info there that you just cant find any where else.
If you want to flush something, how about the song game, or the random thought thread deleting those threads alone would clear a lot of band width.

Old one.
I'm not opposed to change, there just simply was some good stuff on the old one. I really liked it. Change is good, if for no other reason you can't learn unless you try something new, and growth is impossible without change. Like it or not, there WAS some GREAT STUFF on the old site. |

There are certainly some nice features with this version. The PM function, for instance, is easier to delete out old messages. It's a little tougher to send one, though, since you can't send one by clicking on a username and clicking the link in their profile. You either have to correctly type their username(that spelling issue we all have.....) or find one of their posts and use the "PM" link in tiny letters at the bottom of their post.
I think it will look better and have better organization once the various categories for threads are updated.
While I'm all for posting off-topic stuff, we did have some bandwidth-eaters mixed in with the regular topics. I don't think I visited that last version of the song game a single time. We can take any thread off-topic at the drop of a hat, so I don't see a real need to have one specifically for that.
There was a lot of valuable info in the old stuff and it would be nice if some of it could be retrieved. If it can, it could possibly be separated from the new stuff as an Archive section or something similar.

I have learned the hard way there is a limit on any computer to the amount of information possible, hence flushing is good. There was a lot of info on the old forum, and it might have been too much.
Hopefully this may enable us to have a chat room with some stronger coding, because while the tiki room was great, it was only a start. The tiki room however was lacking, because of its total refreash feature, which ate band width. An idea came to mind, it took inspiration off yahoo's chat rooms which had a background refreash which used idle band width to refreash it for incoming messages. Something like that would have eliminated the tiki rooms problems, IMHO.
All that needs to be recovered should ony be recovered to a certain point, sorry that is just the only way to recover the information from the previous forum. I think if you recover all the old information the site may crash again, unless the new server can handle the information. If the new server can handle the info it will just crash faster.
This forum looks like it manages information better and is worth keeping the only suggestion I have is to run the old information as is without enabling people to add information, this would be called archiving the information. I apologize to those who like the Random thoughts section but it can be deleted. B.S. off the old site should be deleted as well which leaves the information enabling it to be organized as a general archive section. In this way you can browse, search, and locate information and adivce when you need it.

I personally liked the older format and style and REALLY hope you guys will be able to bring it back. I miss all of the old stuff we used to be able to do and especially all the OLD posts. I'd rather go back to the old format but if you guys can make this forum like the old one than that'd be cool. If not oh well...... |

This new one has some nifty features, like the poll. How handy would that be for settling DOA issues? If the threads can be brought back to life, I say convert them to this new format. And if those threads are gone, well, that really bites. |

From what I've heard the different categories thing will be taken care of as soon as the guys figure out if this will be a permanent situation or not. |

| The old forum didn't crash because of data overload. It crashed because some jerkoff loser creep hacked into the servers via the Dean Shop software and/or the YABB software and blasted everything. |
Tom was dead nuts correct on this. It had nothing to do with the number of posts, the drive space used, etc. It had to do with a either a virus or a putz hacker.
I am really amazed that there was no tape backup however. That is a bit concerning.
I, for one, would miss the CONTENT of the old forum. There was a huge amount of information there, from just a research point if nothing else.
I sincerely hope if nothing else the stuff in PSUPloads can be recovered.

I'm more concerned about the data than the change in format at this point. The old format was okay, so is this one. The best solution would be if you could restore the original as it was. If not I could live with this, but I really hope you get all of the data back from the original forum. |

Backup?

| Backups don't always work |
You have got to be kidding?
If ANY of our IT guys ever said that, they'd be sacked on the spot and replaced by someone who DID know how to have a working backup system.
Not having one in an enterprise environment is inexcusable. Period.
Not being able to restore from one is just as inexcusable.
We have 23 servers in our server room, and all of them are backed up nightly to tape. We have a 4 tape rotation, 2 of which are stored offsite, and the others are in a fireproof vault.
Choosing a backup strategy that "doesn't always work" is a failure of the administrator, not the system.
Our system is set up such that we never have a period of more than 4 hours down time, even if the whole thing got blown away by viruses or whatnot. Our guys can reconstruct everything from ground zero if need be in a single day. |

Mark is Correct...
And we made some changes here so this won't happen again.
That being said, the data recovery people did say there is about 65 gig on the drive so things are looking positive.
Should know soon...

I'm happy to help Pete write some backup scripts. I imagine this is a LAMP server (Linux Apache Mysql PHP), so it's dead simple. We can squirt the whole thing securely to an offsite machine for safe keeping. Heck, if 65Gb+ is a problem we can simply do an incremental.
Anyway, let me know if I can help. It's the least I can do for the company that goes out of it's way to help us

I think that pretty much says it all.
Griping about losing data without a tested backup mechanism in my book is just as ludicrous as whining catching some STD when you hang out in cathouses and don't use a condom.
You get what you have coming.

The data recovery specialists are just about done.
This has taken a lot longer than anyone expected.
Now info will be put up on a server and it is up to our guys to see if we can read and make sense of the data that has been recovered.
This is all happening at the worst time of year for us as all efforts are going into Holiday sales and NAMM preparation.
This is going to be a record Holiday season here at Dean with back to back record months and our biggest year in history. Something we really were not expecting due to the economy but somethin we luckily happened to be prepared.
This is also the biggest NAMM show we ever prepared for with the most and hottest line up of new products. Higher priced (5K) and the most custom line up of exotic wood USA guitars; affordable USA guitars with a street price closer to $1,000; many more affordable models in our standard line with probably the best deal on the planet... a 2 pickup EVO with a $99 street price. It doesn;t stop there... how bout a HardTail with a street price i9n the $600s and new killer basses including USA; solid back and sides acoustics plus amny new models and better prices in our acoustic line....
I could go on and on but have to do some Christmas shopping.
For those of you who have experienced Dean NAMM shows in the past, we are bringing back the Dean Fashion Show.
Regards,
Dean Z
p.s. for anyone who missed the announcement, Michael Angelo Batio will be at DOA III. He is really something to see. |

Of course being new, this is the only format I know, and I like it. I'm just looking for something easy and user friendly.
And WOW!!!! Cheaper priced USA's. GULP! I know my butt is broke now!!!!

ps: Thanks Mr. Z, for the update and the guitars! |

That's the exact news I've been longing for zzz! I am down for two USA DEANS of the eVo or Hardtail persuasion! I still feel personally, that you should abandon the low end stuff. I know the world needs $99 guitars, too. But let Walmart cater to that demographic. When do we get pics of these new guitars? I'm waiting on pins and needles! Get yer pencil ready, Dave at B&T! mf |

Thanks Dean Z.
Will there be a way for us to see pictures of the NAMM guitars?
Will Randal be in attendance? He took some good pictures of the Summer NAMM..
Maybe we can have a NAMM link to the website?
Sincerely,
joe in japan (A.K.A. qs) |

Is there any word on whether the old forum is going to be brought back or is this going to be the new forum?
And if this is going to be the new forum when is it going to organized a little better? |

No word. I guess the Z man's busy planning NAMM. But hey, we're tryin' ta make the new house a home.
I still hope they can fix it back to the old one. To think that there's 'no' backup of the old forum is preposterous! |

Well, it looks like the old forum is toast.
There was alot of very useful information in there for anyone that wanted to search for it. Bummer.
I guess my +or- 2500 posts bite the dust as well. |
