MANY MANY thanks to those of you who gave input on the home page problem I was having. I got the spyware and a couple of new "tools" (in my best Bevus & Butthead voice "uhhh hhuuu hhhuuuu hhhhhuuuu.......he said tool.........) that seems to have fixed the problem.
SO NOW I HAVE A NEW QUESTION...... while talking about this issue with some of the folks here in the arena, someone said it sounded like my computer had been hacked & I needed to beware of something called a "dialer"?? Uhhhhh what's that all about? Anyone????
And again, THANKS for your input.... |

Typically, a hacker will try and setup an FTP account on your computer, ...store large files hidden away in a remote directory...etc, basically use your computer to his/her benefit. |

Dialer is a program that makes connection to other computers and moves files between them or sends a bunch(thousands) of emails thru your computer.
Always use a firewall and viruscheck when your computer is connected to internet. www.zonealarm.com has a good free firewall. It blocks effencietly the attack/hack attempts and show you the statistic how many blocks it has made. I installed it to my friend about 4 months a go and checked yesterday how many blocks it has made. +96000.
Running the Ad-aware weekly helps out too.

When we were on dial up I used the free zone alarm and it was stopping probes left and right. Not having that problem with DSL, but I still use Zone Alarm Pro. |

Here's a great site to test your firewall.
go to www.grc.com and select Shields Up!, click it again and run the first 3 tests. It tells you if you have some critical ports open.
Also remember to disable File and Printer Sharing from your network settings.
