hey all,
i don't have enough money for the 100w randall, oh well, i'm happy with a 75w amp, but... how loud is it? is it loud enough to play a school gym? loud enough to make my ears ring if i play it in my bed room?
thanks
nick
ps: the model is called RG75 (at least i think it is...) |

Watt consumption is not a measurement of volume. It can be uesed as a relative measurement, for example, two class b power amps, one 30 watts and one 50 watts, it is generally safe to assume teh 50 watt will be louder.
I think you will find 75 watts is loud enough for any small to medium sized club with a decent PA. It will be PLENTY loud enough for your bedroom, and will not quite be loud enough for a school gym.
Question; Combo or half stack? Call em nuts, but I've always felt you got a better sound and more "ompf" out of a half stack... So a 75 watt combo amp will be swallowed in a gym, unless you're the only one playing. All in all, I'd say it probably big enough for everything you could need it for unntill you're playing 500 seat establishments. HTH! |

it's a 1x12" combo. i'm hoping it will be loud enough for a school gym, but hooking up the amp with mics wouldnt be a problem.
thanks joe! |

If they will let you mic it and are running it through a PA in a full abnd situation, You're all set. If you're talking about pulling a Doc Ozz Solo Star spangled banner, since you're the only one playing, it'll be fine as is.
Best of luck! |

I've played the Randall RG75 and it's plenty loud. It'll depaend on amount of people in the gym plus how loud the rest of the group is. It does have a speaker extension out on it so you can add an extra cabinet to increase the volume and cover more area. It'll push a 4X12 cabinet just fine but I have a single 12 cabinet that works for anything I've done plus there is a line out to run into a PA board. |

depends on the efficiency of the speakers and the cab..
if you use a single 12", in a sealed box, and the efficiency of the speaker is 88dB 1W/1Metre, then with 1 watt input, you should produce 88dB.. it's all logarithymic.. to get a 3.33dB increase in output, you'd have to tenfold the power..
blah, blah, blah...
read this.. it's about "audiofile" speakers, but the basic info is sound..

If you're going to play in a gym, you are in for nightmare acoustics. There will be so much reverb you'll get lost in the slop.

Very cool! I'm not sure which amp i'll get, I'm very tempted to get the 100w 2x12" combo! I took out $600 in cash today to buy the amp, and my parents dont know. they're going to be really really really really really really really really pissed off when i come home with it on boxing day!!! |

Volume isn't nessesarily measured in watts or even ohms for that matter. One large factor in volume is the amount of speakers you're useing.
Say you have a 75w amp with one speaker and a 100w amp of the same brand with one speaker of the same size as the other ( or any other brand for that matter) and you have the preamp set identicle. You wouldn't notice much of a volume differance.
Now, lets say that you have a 75m amp with two speakers and a 100w amp with just one. The rigs are set the same. The 75w rig with two speakers would sound louder then the 100w rig with one speaker.
Hope that helps |

Loudest small amp I've ever played through was a Peavy LA 400. 210 watts through a single 12" Black Widow. Did a lot of outdoor gigs with it and never had problems under any circumstance. Now I have a Fender Stage 100 DSP that has a single Celestion and it IMO is loud enough for anywhere. You can add an extension cab to it with a single 12" Celestion and that brings it up to 160 watts at 4 ohms which is more than overkill for anthing I play. Keeping in mind that I'm 55 and playing that loud in a band just isn't my thing any more. I'm playing for older audiences now and no matter what the amp is set on it's always "turn it down". |

Wicked. Don't be put off by those who belive you have to have high nos of watts to get a big sound. My amp head is only 50w and it crushes our Rhythm guitarists 120w. Just play em and find the right one. |

Watts doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot volume wise. My 50 Watt Hiwatt 1/2 stack will blow just about any combo out of the water volume wise.
Go to the store and turn it UP UP UP - the sales guys will love you.
Or - ask for the amp that goes to 11!!! |
