I don't think Evo's sucks. I just prefer ML and V shape of Deans. Everybody's got their own favourites.

Explorer is my all time favorite guitar shape so I'm partial to that styling first and foremost. Reminds me of myn favorite car '57 Chevy. Coincidence they both have big ins? NOT!!! I like the Z in paticular although I only own 1 Dean now, a Czech Korina V. I forsee a Korina Czech Z high on my list.
Usually if a guitar sucks it has nothing to do with the guitar model. |

They are all equally as GOOD. Why do you think one has to be better than the other ?
It is a matter of personal preference, not which is better. I have owned all the models the Caddy (I have a TC) the ML,V,Z selects, I tried an Evo, but didn't buy it although I did think it was a fine guitar. They each have their strong points and their draw backs, depending upon your style of playing. that is what makes DEAN so diverse.
I would hardly call your polls anything to base merit on with less than 12 responses.

I guess it depends on the person playing it... I like the EVO and I like it very much. And who said the ML and Vs and Zs sucked. I like those guitars but like i said, i'm sticking with evo... |

Anyone here think the Les Pauls have a better sound than Deans. Sounds like a good topic to discuss here. |

As an owner of a Les Paul a TC caddy and now 2 Chafin Embers (Ben Chafin is the designer of the Evo) I can tell you the Ember outshines my Les Paul, TC Caddy that I own, and the Evo that I played. |

Bill, you are so right. I think it all depends on what type of sound your looking for. I like hot wound pups, so a guitar w/ "classic" humbuckers aren't gonna be enough for me. Know your style and match it with the right axe. |

As an older player I don't care for the pointy guitars, but that doesn't mean they suck. Just all a matter of what floats your boat. A Strat is really about as pointy as I like. I had an EVO SS but sold it and bought a US G&L Legacy. I think any guitar you are happy with is the right choice. |

Indeed. The EVO SS is a great guitar. However so are the Caddies and the Pointies. I think the best thing about Dean is the variety offered. Almost any guitar player will find something they like with Dean.
I don't see any of them as being 'better' or 'the best' because as stated before it's all in the eye of the beholder. My favorite guitar changes week to week. Currently my SG is the one I pick up first. Go figure. |

There is one thing i think doesn't go good with the ML V Z or whatever is the top of the neck. It is a little big and pointed out for me.
And the same for the custom series, the top of the necks are on way to much of a slant. |

The 'tails are the new flagship USA guitars from Dean... sound, feel, and taste are all subjective... beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so to speak.
However, if I were to buy a guitar, I think it would be an EVO.

I'm currently down to 2 basses at the moment... an 81 ML bass, and the prototype DOA Caddy bass. Instigator seems to have a way of "adopting" most of my family... but this is only a temporary situation.
The guitar I currently own, is a Maya LP clone... old, beat up and currently a basketcase. It does have some potential though... arched top, bolt on neck, inlays, bound body, neck and headstock.
New basses on the horizon are to include the '04 DOA bass, perhaps a new Z , and maybe even one of them there blue USA Caddies that Bernt is lobbying for...
If I did buy an EVO, it would be the new budget model... I can't justify spending several hundred dollars on a six string, seeing how I really SUCK on the guitar...

Doesn't an EVO SS retail for $650 U.S.?? I've seen them go on Ebay for $400 U.S. - that's like $540 Canadian!! OUCH!! |

the exchange rate at the time was 1.54(54 cents added to the US Dollar), so that's 680 x 1.54 = $1047.2, so 1050 + tax which is 1.15, so 1.15 x 1050 = $1207 so that is what it comes down to! |

Um - you can buy a new EVO SS for less than $400 U.S.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2367798311&category=41435
$379 plus lets say $50.00 shipping to the great white north = $429. Based on the high exchange rate of 1.54 - that would be $660 Can. Add GST (7%) and PST (in Ontario where I am it's 8%) and your now at $759. Add another $20 for brokerage fees and your at a grand total of $779.
It's fine if you bought it without really knowing the price market - live and learn. I just don't want you to think that $1150 is a good price for an EVO - they can be had for WAY less.
By the way - what part of Canada are you from? |

That post definitely sucks, I'll tell you that.
I don't have anything bad to say about a Dean that retails for more than $180 {ya gotta have standards, and the playmates are for newbies}
Evo/Z,mL,V,/Caddy: The bottom line is that I'd be pretty stoked to have any of em. I love my ML's and I'm trying to get a Caddy now.
An Evo would find it's way into my collection for sure if I ran across one and happened to have the cash... |

dude, everyone is different and if it is good to you, than of course it doesn't suck! I used to myself through the same type of toment and thinking this vs that, etc. Just be happy and find what you like. I have two Evos and they are great guitars. Actually........one of my favorite designs.
But, it's time for me to get a Chafin Ember. |

an example:
My Step father owned, pre-that dec 25 holiday, several self built acustics and one fender, and a vintage gibby. I was generous this year and bought him a ML Phantom. He said it played better than all his other guitars and it was cheaper thean his telecaster.
FOOLS there is only one name for guitars, DEAN |

Everyone has their favorite guitar shape. Whatever makes you happy is the best guitar for you. I draw the line at the Dean "Budweiser" guitar though.

I'm not gonna tell you guys what to like and what not to like, but... You can't be serious, to think that by having a bolt on ML that you are qualified to make a valid blanket judgement in Dean Guitars quality. I got my first ML(custom ordered) in '81. I prefer the Hardtails and top O' the line eVos to it hands down. I HONESTLY prefer the Korean setneck Icons to it. All Day Long... I'd love to get a new USA value Dean or a Premium Czech to further compare. The T.C. 's that I have encountered are very close to the Chicago Guitars. |

I Love Pointy Guitars , (that why I casted vote for V,Ml,Z)
The Closes I get to rounded is my good Old Strat ,
True it all about preferance , But I hate any part of a Guitar body
restricting my access to upper string at the end of the neck .
(Plus, the neck on Evo seems a little stocky ... ) |

I own both vintage and TC DEANs and I have played a lotta KOrean DEANs (a big music store here stock korean DEANs and Hartails).
I still haven't played anything with better tone than my 1981 Flame ML, my new TC ML custom and my TC V and that includes teh Hartails...I don't think the EVO"s are in the same league BTW....not to bash them but how could they ever be being hundreds cheaper, in European cases thousands!
A guy I know just bought a faded denim Hardtail and I played it a lot through my POWERBALL I was surprised since I though I wouldn't like it at all, but I did like it in some way....but I still wouldn;t buy one.....

Julian,
There is no comparision between the Korean guitars and the USA DEAN line at all !
The Czech line of guitars are closer to the USA DEANs.
The necks are a bit thick on them and the neck joint leaves something to be desired,to some people.
In the price range that your Evo falls it is a great guitar for the money, BUT there is no way that you can compare it to a $2000.00 USA DEAN guitar. That just shows how new you are to all of this in my eyes.

Hans, you just haven't played the right eVo, yet. Mine are two of the best playing, sounding guitars I've tried. No other guitar puts a big old shite eating grin on my face when played like the Millenniums twins. Of course the pups probably aren't hot enough for your metalness and the necks make the Czech and Korean necks seem ultra thin, but it all works for me.
What didn't you like about the HardTail? I'm guessing the neck didn't feel right, since your Mls and V all have v-necks. I'd also guess the pups weren't your cup of tea either. I wonder what one would sound like with a set of the hot Bill Lawrence pups? |

My EVO SS has the fattest neck I've ever played. It's like a frickin 50s neck. I've never been able to explain it.

And make that statement based on how many other Deans that you've played. How many TC's have you played? How many Hardtails? How many Caddies? |

Julian,
Man back the attitude wagon down a bit. You came out like gangbusters and basically said that your Korean made guitar is as good as the USA line of DEANS.
Take a look at peoples lists of guitars they own, I think that many of us are more qualified than you, a new forum member who owns his first DEAN, many of us have had numbers of DEAN guitars and many of us still do, both USA, Czech and Korean.
The Evo is a good guitar for the market niche that it fits in, and yours is a nice looking one, BUT no way can it stand up to my USA 25th Anniversary Time Capsule 3 Cadillac, in any catagory, looks , feel, sound, play ability, or to any other USA DEAN guitar. Those are the facts, not meant to offend you but to inform you. Many people here have started out with a Korean Evo and moved up to the next level be it a Czech made Dean or the ultimate a USA DEAN. Perhaps one day you will also,or maybe not. But whatever choice you make you are a DEAN owner first and formost.
Bill

+1. I love my EVO SS, but quite frankly it's smoked by my custom guitars. Don't get me wrong, it still gets plenty of use, but nothing beats a good handmade axe. Period. |

Julian,
It certainly is a sad commentary on some of the youth today when they offend somebody else then whine when it happens to them.
You aren't the first person to buy an Evo select and won't be the last, but your Evo isn't the end all be all DEAN guitar.
Take a little friendly advice from someone older and wiser.
Why not sit back and try to use the forum to your advantage and learn all you can about what great guitars all the DEANs are, and learn to accept some of their shortcomings also.
Instead you choose to pi$$ everybody off with your childish rantings and polls.
Want to know about the ebony Evo learn to use your PM and ask him yourself. |

Dude suck it up and Hold your tongue ,
Show that your a mature young person for god sake ,
When you post something it isn't reserved for you alone
least of all a post when you ask the opinion of your fellow members
What it breaks out to is personal preference ,
But what it racks up to is the EVO will never , ever , ever , be as
good a a Custom shop . And that is the god honest truth ,
Maybe once you either own one or play one you will understand why your agruement is folly and childish .
Something one learns as they get older is self restraint !

Julian currently I have :
2003 DEAN 25th Anniversary Time Capsule 3 Cadillac, the first and only one done in transparent black, the first 11 top that was done, and offered to me by the man himself Dean Z.
This is a prototype that was built a 1 off
If you would like to see some of my other guitars feel free to check my home page:
http://hometown.aol.com/ccsplumislandman/index.html
There are more Deans that I still have a 1996 Cadillac Premium Select in transparent purple, a 1980 DEAN E'Lite Deluxe a 1982 DEAN E'Lite, they are not pictured because I just don't have the space on my site. |

Nope, Jullian, you are right. The eVo is the greatest guitar ever and you should be commended for standing up for yourself. These guys just don't have a clue, one of a kind, custom shop, handmade, poke your eyes out pointy, BFHS, blah, blah, blah.
Actually, you like the guitar you have and that is fantastic. Keep playing and learning.
