Hi Gang...

New Dean owner here...just wondering if anyone can help me...I got a brand new Dean Edge 5 Fretless Bass for Christmas, but there was no owners manual or any papers whatsoever in the shipping box...are there any manuals available?

Please help,

Rob

(even my $20 toaster came with a manual - hehehe)

Hey, Congrats and welcome to the forums!

As far as I know, there are no manuals or other paperwork included except the COA with the TC models.

I didn't get nothing else but that COA with my TC.

You probably shouldn't need a manual. what did you need to know?

None of the new Deans I bought had any sort of manuals, either. Just a guitar cord, an allen wrench, and the registration card. But...do you need a manual for a guitar?

Dana,
Guitar cord? As an example my TC Caddy apparently was the first one to have the push/pull tone pot to activate the middle pup. It certainly would have been nice to be informed of this, instead of me finding out because someone posted in the forum about TC wiring on the 3 pup models. I saw the post and ran upstairs to check and low and behold mine did. There was a flurry of other owners checking theirs also as I recall. It would be nice to see a manual with DEAN guitars thoughts on:
1) finish care
2) truss rod adjustment
3) intonation adjustments

And whatever else DEAN might feel as pertinant information, certainly there are owners who do know the basic stuff.
Dean necks do not use the standard relief neck as all other guitars actually the relief is set more like Gibsons necks are, almost flat. I think when people are spending upwards of $400.00 - $3300.00, that a manual is the very least that should be expected.

Fender installs Schaller strap locks on their USA Stratocasters, and case candy includes an owners manual, strap, guitar cable, polishing cloth, and adjustment tools. it would seem that including those items with Dean guitars wouldn't eat into the profits that bad, that they need to be excluded.

Ah...well okay then. To be honest, I didn't know that any guitar came with a manual, as I've never seen one. I figure out the pickup combos, and all set-up is done professionally. I am a player only, and that's all I want to do on my guitar. I don't like reading manuals or working on guitars, AT ALL. That's for someone else to do, not me. For those of you who like messing with your own stuff, cool. I'd rather spend that time practicing. Working on guitars, to me, is like working on cars...I don't enjoy it, and I won't do it if I can pay somebody else to. I'm not interested in trussrods, neck relief, or any of that. All I care about is what my guitar feels like when I pick it up and play it. If it's set up correctly, easy to play, intonation is on, and everything works, that's all that matters to me. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I didn't spend years and years learning to play, just so I could sit around reading manuals and tweaking knobs. To me, a guitar is a tool. Not much more than that. All I need is for it to work properly so that I can do what I was trained to do on it.

Bill, I definitely agree with the inclusion of adjustment tools. I have yet to buy a guitar that has included tools. Crying or Very sad

None of my Deans or USA Hamers came withany adjustment tools. The Hamer truss rod adjuster is hard to find also....

Of the guitars that I've had: Carvin includes tools (truss rod wrench, allen wrenches), two picks a warranty card and two sheets of paper explaining setups and adjustments. Peavey included a useless "manual" that looked like a cheap black and white copy. Others inluded nothing.

Maybe an online section (like others have) explaining setups and adjustments would be helpful. But I don't miss an owners manual.

Tim

I am getting to be more and more like that, Dana. But my problem is that I don't trust anyone else's decision making skills enuff to let 'em paw my guitars. That, and the fact that no one near my house has ANY guitar tech abilities! Outside of body/paint work, I'd rather die three times than work onna gawdamm car! The way I look at it, if a car won't start, then it must want to go to the junk yard. And it is my duty to kick it halfway there! Evil or Very Mad Shocked Cool Twisted Evil Laughing

LOL!!! Yeah man, I hear ya! Fortunately, where I live, there are numerous very good luthiers and guitar techs. I haven't really had any problems with any body setting up my stuff, EXCEPT that I am very anal about my action being really, really low with no fret buzz. So I sometimes have to go back and say "lower..lower," which often causes me to have to pay for a fret level. So be it. Anything so that my axes play RIGHT, and FAST! Great comment about working on cars...I agree 100%!! Laughing

Ooops, I stand corrected, Tim. I did buy a brand new Carvin, and it did indeed come with a small manual describing trussrod adjustments, and intonation stuff. Also came with the wrenches, picks and warranty card. Still, I had no use for the manual. But yeah, I guess I do have one after all. Very Happy

My Taylor came with a truss rod tool and some informational sheets on proper humidification. Their website also has some excellent reference material for the above-mentioned humidification, general guitar care, proper string changing technique and other such topics. They're on the websites as .pdf files, easily downloaded and easily printed.
