couple weeks ago, i offered to get my bandmate's Rickenbacker fixed. he treats his gear like crap, throws it around, abuses it, etc, and the pickguard cracked in half and all the electronics were intermittent. he's got no money, so i took it, ordered the pickguard, brought it to get fixed and gave it back in time for a show. cost about $120 in all and now it plays perfectly like it should.
so i got rehearsal tonite and i brought my '68 SG to work so i can go straight to practice after. got out of my car at work, and about 10 steps and the gig bag zipper fails, and my vintage '68 SG cartwheels across the parcking lot, snaps of a tuner key, and cracked the neckjoint.
i must have some baaaaaaaaaaaaad fucking karma. |

That sucks Al......I'm sorry to hear this man. Just calm down and assess the damage and go from there. Tuning peg, no problem, fixable. Neck joint can be a bit tricky. If youre not sure what to look for, bring it to your local guitar specialist/luthier to determine whether or not that the neck joint is sound or needs to be reset. By the way you describe it, youre lucky you didnt break the neck.
One word of advice, never use a gig bag period! I dont own and never have. If the zipper fails, like it did in your case. You have a catastrophe. In other situations, a gig bag serves as a portable toothpick maker. Just dont do it dude! Promise everyone you'll throw that damn thing away.
And this is for you, to cheer you up some, I hope............

thank you all for the kind words and vomit
i have the original tuners so that's no issue, but the neckjoint has cracked in several places. i don't think it's a matter of filling in with wood dust/glue, or whatever the heck they do. by my uninformed eye, i would imagine the neck has to be reset, otherwise it will always be jacked up. the bridge got all whacked out too. i'll bring it in this weekend for surgery. might as well put EMG's in it now. i hate the bridge pup anyway.
both my gig bags will be burned tonite as a sacrifice to the guitar gods. |

Im sad for you man! That sucks big time! But hey, as said, it is fixable. Something like this actually just happened to my friend a couple days ago, except with a hardshell case. He forgot to latch it , picked it up and the guitar flew out. |

I had a 93 LP studio. I was 16 when I got it, brand new. My first good guitar, couldn't wait to get that sumbitch out the case and play it. Didn't matter that I didn't have strap locks. Didn't matter that the strap barely held up the strat copy the gibby replaced.
So there I am, right, feelin like a rock star, jammin on my white LP with gold hardware (just like Randy's... well, to me anyway) to Crazy Train in my bedroom. First chord, F#. Doesn't sound quite right, so I take my hand off the neck to tune the strings. The second I take my hand off the neck, the guitar crashes down, smacks the back of the head stock on my dresser, and bam. That's all she wrote. The guitar was 15 minutes old. Still had the box in the living room. Only thing holding the headstock on was the black stuff they put on the front (whatever the hell it's called) that says Les Paul on it.
I found a guy not far from where I lived at the time, Paul Unkert, who had done some work for Bruce Springsteen and Bonnie Raitt. He takes one look at it, and says "Give me a week." A week later I go back, and dude hands me the guitar. I couldn't even see where it was cracked. And the guitar played so good, better than it did the 15 minutes I had it before it broke. I kept it until my demons made me trade it for a car to out run my girlfriend's husband. That part's not important though.
Moral of the story: It's a Gibson. These things happen. It'll add mojo, if anything. Never know, could make it sound better. Don't sweat it. But burn the bags. And post pics of the flames. |

thanks again for the kind words everybody.
i brought her in for surgery today, and the neck will need to be reset, but should be fine. putting some new tuners on and gettin her back up to snuff. she's been my workhorse for 8 years, and i'll have her back on stage in a few weeks.
i have been lampooned for using a gig bag by every single person i've told.
lesson learned. this kinda sh!t should happen on stage, not in a parking lot. |

I hope you realized that $150 investment in a case would have prevented that guitar from losing some value. Anything I have that's over $500 gets a case. |

Yes, it should have been in a case. No doubt.
I have seen, more than once mind you, someone snatch up a guitar case while all of the latches are open, and the instruments have been catapulted onto the concrete!
Welcome to sucksille. |
