So, I've been picking up a guitar here and there this year and have been completely delinquent in posting at least a few crappy pics. So here come the crappy pics!
First into the stable this year was this nice little Seagull acoustic:
I bought this at a close-out of a little shop here in Tampa. It came with a nice Lear-like case. It's an acoustic-electric with EQ. Not bad for $300. The tone from this thing is just amazing. Clear as a bell!
Next in was this bass. I don't play bass. Now I have two. They're both Chafins. The new one is the 2009 Summer NAMM Undertow Prototype:
This bass is heavy as fvck. Thick mahogany body, swap ash neck, 18v EMG electronics. Ya, it'll rock your world right off it's axis. This bass came in a nice Levys bag. I cannot tell you what I paid for it, as I paid so little it makes me feel dirty. I brought it around to Ben's place so he could welcome the wayward child home (the bass, not me!) and he did a nice setup on it. This makes four Chafins for me, with another in the works.
Grab your spandex and hairspray, it's time to hit the 80s:
As you can tell from the pic, this axe is in need of some serious cleanup. It's got a ton of mojo racked up over it's 31 years of life. I found this guitar hiding in the corner of the local GC. It had been in stock for a few months, and is a little to "used" for a die hard collector, and too pricey for a casual tire-kicker. I just happened to have a case-queen Carvin DC127 that was worth about the same, so I worked as close to an even trade as you'll ever get in a retail environment. I love this guitar. It's all mahogany, but delightfully light. The pickups are an in-house Guild product, and if they were still available, I would put them in all my guitars! Super attitude in those pups! Yes, the guitar is festooned in holo-flake! While it certainly isn't as holo-flakey as the USA Caddy Holoflake I'll never find, this Guild's holo-action is taking a little of the bite off of my lust for the Holoflake. This is a superb guitar, even with the 31 years of obvious use.
Last and certainly not least, I recently welcomed a USA Dean BelAire II into the barn o' guitars:
As I mentioned in a previous post, the closing price on this guitar was south of $500. What? A USA Dean for under $500? Yes. I smiled that day.
So what we have is a mahogany body, maple neck and board, I believe Vinnie Moore pups in the neck and middle and it's either a Baker Act or Time Capsule in the bridge. I'll have to get the build info at DOA.
So I have to say that this guitar is surprising in several ways. First off, despite its size, it is a pretty heavy guitar. I was not expecting it to have the heft it does. Next, although you expect a USA guitar to be well-made, the fit and finish on this guitar is just perfection. Finally, this guitar is about as versatile as they come. Want to do the rock\metal\shred thing? Step right up. Feeling the blues? Go for it. Need to put some twang in your thang? Got it. Getting jazzed? Get 'er done. This is the universal donor guitar. Go to any gig and no matter what, you'll have the tone covered.
Next up? Who knows. I think I am at my annual limit for stable adjustments. I've got a Crackercaster-S on order, but that is going to be a while yet. Of course, if I manage to thin the herd somehow, it would be open season again... |
