I was thinking about using my red stripe Peavey Bandit with impulses for recording (it doesn't have simulated output like the new ones). Is this a bad idea without a load? I know with a tube amp this would be a terrible idea if there wasn't a dummy load.

Yup solid state amps don't care, tube amps with their output transformers cannot be run without a cab (with few exceptions).
