Hey all,
I have a 1981 Dean V that I bought back in '84 or so. Awesome guitar. Wanted to get another, picked one up from the Guitar Center in Akron, Oh. There is some major differences between the two. My original one has smooth curved edges, no binding on the body top (no maple top?) and a smaller neck. Why the difference, shouldn't they be the same?

One may be a standard and the other a flame series. Both are very different.
The Standard will have a maple top and binding etc.... the Flame will be solid mahogany - no binding. |

Sounds like your V is a flame series and probably has a rosewood board right? Standards came with ebony boards and body binding. You could get a mix of neck profiles since they were all hand done. From a round C to a subtle V profile and even a sharp V profile. This is what was great about the old Dean's, no two were the same |

was this Guitar Center Dean V a brand new one?
if so it's most likely a '79 reissue. |

They are both '81's (according to the serial anyway). I think you guys may have something with the flame and standard. I was hoping they would be the same as I love the flame (hey, that rhymes). Not that I'm dissing the standard....I'd post some pics, but I don't know how. |

and just to clear it up...the "new" guitar I bought was a used 1981 bought online through Guitar Center's vintage section.
If somebody could teach an old man how to post pics, I'll put some up.
Thanks!
Cheers and beers,

Except back then you could actually try out a USA Dean before purchasing it. |

Your old guitar was a FLame Series;
Your new guitar is a Standard;
The Standard was their upscale guitar, with an ebony fretboard, curly maple top and binding on the body. |

That would be Eliott Easton of The Cars.
That new to you V Standard would be killer if someone hadn't butchered it with that Kahler. Damn. Still a sweet score. If you aren't digging it, I'm sure you may find interest here for flipping it out. Welcome to the forum man. You have a couple of sweet v's there. |
