So I modded my JB8 and Mean 90 (n) in my Les Paul Custom and the custom
P90 from Iconix Pickups in my SG Jr.
1. I replaced one of the A5 magnets in the Mean 90 with an A3.
Took away the boominess/bassiness, and added treble and clarity.
2. The Iconix P90 came with all hex screws, and it was just a bit too sharp and bright in the attack.
So I took out all the hex screws and replaced them with regular screws.
Took away the sharp attack and (perceived) excess treble.
Now much warmer and (perceived) thicker.
3. Took 2 of the hex screws from the P90 and installed them in the 5th and 6th string spots in the JB8.
Now low notes are a little sharper, tighter, and clearer.
I'm overall much happier with both setups.
It's amazing what small, inexpensive little things can do to dramatically alter tone. |
