DOA Presidential Election - Voting Results
by jim6 on Mon Dec 01, 2003 9:51 am
The polls closed at 11:59 pm central time last night. All votes have been counted. Each cast ballot was printed off for a physical record until the voting was finished. The printed ballots were counted and compared to the votes as tracked in the DOA Member List master file. The figures from each side balanced to each other. That's a good thing.

From a membership pool of 254, a total of 86 ballots were cast in the election. That works out to a 33.8583% participation rate. I would've liked to have gotten a higher percentage rate(over 40%), but I think that getting over a third of the group to vote on this matter is a pretty strong showing. Everyone that took the time to vote should be commended for participating in the process.

Before we get to the results, let's clarify a few things:
1. This election was tracked in the state of Missouri, not Florida. No hanging chad issues or arguing over the voting intent of some 115-year-old lady who decided to partially mark all of the boxes.
2. As stated, a hardcopy of all votes has been maintained. The copies will be inserted in the office shredder some time tomorrow. They were kept as a backup in the event that I lost the master file. I hate to even say anything about losing the master file, as I don't want to retype it. Ever.
3. The votes cast by individual members will remain a secret. Period. I'm the only one who know how individual members voted and the column will be deleted from the member list at the same time the hardcopies go in the shredder.
4. Voting results are final.

And now, for the official DOA President Voting Results.........

53 votes for BraveDave
15 votes for Jeff/100% Tone
14 votes for Randall
3 votes to Abstain
1 vote for Ozz

Again, thanks to all who participated.

Finish help!!!
by Grumpy Goat on Mon Dec 01, 2003 10:43 am
Hey gang, does anyone know any decent links where I could learn a bit more about how finishes are applied? Someone was mentioning some fancy technique 'painting then sanding then painting again' and I'd like to know more about it.

Cheers!

Here's a text I wrote for ENFORCER's first original song!

I tried to stay well ehhh...within a certain genre...ehhhh TANKARD comes to mind!

Alcoholic Invasion

In this bar is where we’ll meet
We go there every night
Smoke some dope and use some speed
We’re drinking alcohol

We’re drinking till the night has gone
Sleeping where we stand
We puke when all the beer is done
Then give another round

You know it’s time alcoholic invasion
Drinking beer and wine alcoholic invasion
Till the morning comes alcoholic invasion
We puke and dance alcoholic invasion

The rumour spread across our town
The cops they gathered round
We smashed their cars and burnt them down
Then gave them a pack o beer

After 60 6 packs we all could get along
Cops and thrashers hand in hand
Thrashin’ and moshing to a metal song
sobriety was forever banned

You know it’s time alcoholic invasion
Drinking beer and wine alcoholic invasion
Till the morning comes alcoholic invasion
We puke and dance alcoholic invasion

The morning after our heads explode
But we never come to sense
Keep drinking according to our code
A party among friends

You know it’s time alcoholic invasion
Drinking beer and wine alcoholic invasion
Till the morning comes alcoholic invasion
We puke and dance alcoholic invasion

I recently got a vintage Z, but I'd like one to be able to play out with and not worry to much about it. Color is really no preference to me, so really anything goes. As long as it sounds beautiful. If anyone has anything let me know.

by Morbid2013 on Mon Dec 01, 2003 7:43 pm
I like the '79 reissues a lot! I love their look but I have yet to play one. How are they? Do they need a pickup change? How is the playability and sustain etc.

I was never really interested in Deans until I saw this photo and it hooked me :

What's your wildest gig?
by BLOYD on Mon Dec 01, 2003 10:29 pm
We were one of a few metal bands set to play a combined show in Tampa, Fl. With “Nasty Savage” and some others.

During sound check earlier that day a power surge blew my Marhall heads...

Arriving at the show I noticed a slew of Harleys in the parking area…a lot of them. These looked like real hard core bikers not weekend warriors.
As I entered the back stage area I also noticed that some professional wrestlers had arrived and were mingling (big names in the business) with some of the band members.

The crowed was pretty dosed buy the time I took the stage. As we jolted into the first song the singer ran on the stage and as he did his spiked armband racked across my shoulder Shocked …I could feel the blood wet my back but I had to play on…of course! (still have the scare today)
During the second song my top E string broke…how many times has your top E string broken?..that was the first and last time it ever happened to me…I had to rewrite parts as I played them to finish the song. I didn't have a backup guitars so I was forced to use David Austin's(Nasty Savage) entire rig to finish the show.

Toward the end of our set one of the motorcycle gangers jumped on stage right on front of me and started jumping up a down. Just about the time I was gonna give him a big boot to the head…while still playing of course…one of our road crew pulled off a killer football tackle that took them flying into the frolicking mosh pit. One of the bikers pulled a knife but some of the wrestlers chased them outside.
Chairs came from out of the crowed and one was broken over some else’s back. At this point some guys ran outside and others pursued. One guy was chased to a strip club next door but they where run off by the owner wielding a sawed off shot gun…oh, did I mention that the strip club owner didn’t have any arms from the elbows down!

The crowed chased the guys to a hotel stairway next door where they caught them…you know what happens here. At this time I was standing outside witnessing this when a pizza guy pulled behind me, got out and ran up the stairs…around this malay to deliver his Pizza. When he came back he started yelling that someone had stolen his car and accused me because I had been standing right buy it…I didn’t even notice that someone had taken it with everything that was going on…and why did he leave it running in this part of town.

Another night we went outside..we noticed one guy sitting in a car as others surrounded him yelling obscenities…the guy in the car was loading a gun. He warned the crowed that he was gonna use it but they didn’t listen…the crowed was to stirred up. He pulled the trigger ending another guys life…right in front of me. The guy with the gun took off running and one of my friends chased him down and tackled him. They held him til police arrived.

I condensed these stories the best I could. I know it seems a little far-fetched but I swear it’s truthful…

Hi all! I am interested in a Hard Tail, but don't know which would be best. I do know I just want a classic black model with chrome hardware. Forum Members and Guests ~
The Dean Guitar server became corrupted over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The forum data was the only data we have not able to recover.

We sent the drive from the server to a data recovery specialist and are awaiting an answer. We should know sometime tomorrow (Thursday Dec. 4th). If the forum data is recovered, we of course will bring it back.

At this point, we are wondering if this current forum software is better then the previous software. Please keep in mind that Pete has not yet customized the current software. If we decide to go with this, Pete will add all the features we have all become used to including; the different categories, recent post list, picture posting, etc. If we recover the date, we feel we can import it into this forum software as well.

Looking for your input.

Once again, thanks for all your support and helping to make Dean Guitars and the Dean Forum a big success.

Kindest regards,

PS YEAH I am growing my hair please don't laugh at me, I know I look stupid!

and it seems like a cliche, but this is teh ebst playing and best sounding DEAN I have ever played, dave set it up like a dream..

The PU's sream I doubt they are the standard DiMarzio Super Distortions, they maybe Super III's, the imprinted LOGO on teh front is different and the bass is tighter! I like em a lot!

The fit and finish are out of this world, it is indeed my dream guitar!

Got a couple more vintage Deans...
by guitarforceone on Thu Dec 04, 2003 5:21 pm
Yay!! I'm excited! I got 2 vintage Flame Series Z's today. One in the standard Trans Red, and the other one is Trans Cherryburst. Both of them had fret jobs and pro setups earlier this year, and I got the receipts for the work done. They both play and sound great! They're more "players grade" I guess you'd say, but still in decent shape. One of them is a '79 model, and has the "PATENTS PENDING" stamped under the "Made in USA." Pretty cool...I don't have another one like that. I'll post some pics this weekend. Sorry I don't have any yet. Sad

DOA Bass for 2004, anyone?
by wingnut on Thu Dec 04, 2003 7:25 pm
Ok Kids...

Everyone that ordered an '03 DOA bass sounds like they're happy with their purchase... I know I am.

So, would anyone be interested in making it a tradition?... I, for one, would.

We could make this easy on ourselves, and get the same basic package as far as hardware goes... I love the tone I get from the Caddy... I'd love to have a set neck ML to go along with it.

Let's come together one more time, low end brothers of love, and see if we can make this happen again. All we have to do is show Elliot the appropriate amount of interest, and we can make this happen.

I'll volunteer to keep track of numbers and such again this year, unless some one else wants to take the lead...

Let's hear from the bass players....

Hear Ye, Hear Ye...A "Tropical Turd" brings $800!!
by guitarforceone on Thu Dec 04, 2003 8:18 pm
So much for the 'turd' designation. That yellow Z on e-bay is going for $800 through a back-door BIN. I've been in contact with the seller, and I would have purchased it myself if I had not just gotten those 2 Z's today. I guess my yellow ML is worth quite a bit more than what I paid for it, judging from this. Would have been a cool set to have, but 3 in a week is pushing it, for me.

Pickups?
by Thor Malleuson on Fri Dec 05, 2003 10:41 am
I have been asked as to what pickups are in the '79 series. Curious myself, I went to the section of the site with '79 series information only to find that there is no technical specifications for these guitars! 1) Does anyone know what pickups are in the '79 series (the Select series too)? 2) Why isn't there any technical info on these guitars?

Thanks in advance.

Tone Circuits..
by throbgod13 on Fri Dec 05, 2003 12:54 pm
so.. how many pay attention to what's in the control cavity of their guitars??

i'm thinking of rewiring my DOA Caddy to a Jimmy Page LP setup.. i want something really flexible.. and 21 tones from that circuit *just* might do it.. Wink

i'm giving some thought to also using NOS Bumblebee caps.. i'm not thinking of getting really snotty like some LP owners, but something that will help bring out some tone.. what have some of you used for caps?? sizes/OEMs.. and how did you wire them up??

i switched to the EMG-HZ H4's.. they are really hot pups.. but, are way bright.. using the stock wiring of the caddy, they are piercingly bright.. i have to turn the tone(s) off to get something somewhat useable..

i've been looking at Tom Holmes pickups.. and i've played a Roswell Rhoades (aluminium) that used one of his PAFs, and they are really nice.. but, not cheap.. this might seem like overkill for a MIK, but i figure that i could always transfer them.. haha, pups that cost more than the guitar they are in!!

anyway.. if all of it falls to shiesse.. i'll just install the setup from the TC3's in it..

Dano Mini Pedals 4 sale
by UF Dean on Fri Dec 05, 2003 8:39 pm
OK guys since the old board isn't up right now, I'm gonna bring this back real quick just in case anyone's interested. If not, it's going to fleabay on Monday. I have 2 slightly used but in PERFECT shape Danelectro mini pedals for sale, 20 each or 30 for both.
One is a Mini amp/distortion. It works as a Mini amp but only with the distortion ON (there is no knob for level of distortion) if you use it with a battery. With a power cord, you can use it as a simple distortion pedal or just as a mini amp.
Next is a phaser. Works fine just with a battery but as with all pedals, you can obviously choose to use your own power source. Basically just an on/off button (footswitch) and a knob for the speed of the effect.
Lemme know if you're interested in one or the other. Reasonable offers will be considered.

Dean Guitars?
by Pixel-Plus on Sat Dec 06, 2003 5:32 pm
I was just at my local guitar storeand I was trying out the Les Pauls. One fo the Deans cought my eye and I tried it out. It sounded just as good as the Les Pauls that I had been playin only half the price. It was the Dean Icon Special Select for $349.99. One of the main things I liked about it is that this guitar is SUPER light. Only thing that would have to go on it is the knobs. They just hurt your eyes when they are put with this beautiful guitar. I just want to know if this guitar is worth getting instead of something like a Les Paul custom or Standard? For the money would it be worth to maybe get the Dean Icon Special Select and maybe upgrade the pickups (don't really need to but I mostly play heavy metal) or just get a Les Paul?

Thanks.

Dean Owners of America Newsletter #54
by PresidentDave on Sun Dec 07, 2003 11:11 pm
Hi, everyone! I have been waiting to see if the old forum was going to be recovered, but I think that at this point I should go ahead and do a newsletter and catch everyone up on what's going on. Needless to say, things have not exactly been what you would call "normal" around here lately. One thing is for sure - you never have to worry about things getting dull here on the Dean Guitars message board.

SERVER CORRUPTION !!!

Dean Z posted a thread about this and said that they were unsure of whether the old forum info could be recovered. I haven't heard anything definite yet, but I, like many of you, feel like it's likely that the old forum info is gone forever. I feel somewhat sad just like everyone else. To me, it's the same as if your family photos were lost in a fire. I used to go back and read the old threads and check out the pics and such. The newbies could go back and read the original forum and actually get a pretty feel for a particular members personality. We do have quite a few "outspoken" individuals and we have certainly had out share of disagreements and some rather "heated" discussions. That's to be expected from such a diverse group of people. But at the end of the day, it's all pretty harmless and most of us get along pretty well.
Let's all just heave a big collective sigh and start over. We have a lot of new members and we have an enormous amount of information, ideas, opinions. We have more people posting than ever. Yeah, it's a drag that Joe lost 6200 posts, but most of them just said "yeah!" anyway. We did lose a lot of cool stuff, but we also lost a lot of pointless stuff, too. That's not such a bad thing.
Dean Z will most likely have something definite this week and no matter what the outcome may be, we can all move forward and continue to share our love of Dean Guitars.

DOA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS !!!

Last week Jim announced the results of the election of DOA president. I am honored by the vote of cofidence that I received and I will gladly continue to serve. This is a very rewarding for me and I will give it my best effort.
I would like to congratulate Randall and Tone on a pretty impressive showing. While I enjoy being Prez, I was glad to see that they received quite a few votes themselves. This club is all about the members, not the president. I take the office somewhat seriously, but I also consider it an office of service.
A big part of the success of any organization is contributions on the part of all members. For the last two years I took a lot of the burden on myself and often found myself at a loss for quality material. In future newsletters, I intend to ask for contributions for individual members. Several new ideas were discussed during the election process and I believe many were great ideas and should be implimented.
First of all, starting in January, the newsletter will be posted monthly. There will be regular features and columns. With the loss of the old forum, this is a good time to revamp things for a fresh new start. We will feature a DOA member of the month, too. This will be a great way to put a face with the name and get to know each other. Also in the works is "Vintage Dean Guitar of the Month". We DOA members own many of the finest examples of the original guitars built from '77 - '86.
I am also going to a new format for the newsletter. While I certainly don't want to lose the personal touch, I am trying to hone my photoshop skills to make the newsletter look slicker and more professional.
When necessary, a special edition of the DOA newsletter will be posted. I am sure that when DOA III rolls around I won't want to wait until the first of the month to post pics and share the experience with those unable to attend.
I am sure that I can count on all of you to make this the best guitar message board around. The sky's the limit!

Thanks again for the chance to serve as your president. Have a great holiday season!

by Sinker on Tue Dec 09, 2003 8:59 am
I guess I have a moderate gift. I can generally figure out chord changes to songs on guitar with a little effort, thought I do get stumped sometimes. (of course with the internet I don't have to do it much anymore). I can 'hear chords' if that makes sense to you. I love to harmonize and it comes naturally to me. I'm far from an accomplished guitar player, but I'm a passable rhythm player. I grew up studying trumpet.

I guess the reason I'm asking is because every once in a while I'll come across somebody with so much God-given natural talent that it just astounds me. I'm playing with a new bass player at church that's like that. He has perfect pitch, but not just for individual notes. He can listen to a song he's never heard before and write out the chords. And not just basic I-IV-V stuff either. I can recognize certain progressions, but this guy hears the EXACT progressions and also can determine what key it's in.

I've also played with guitarists that had great chops and could play anything, but had no idea what they were playing. They just played. From rehearsal to rehearsal, they didn't remember which key I had written out the arrangements in, because it didn't matter to them in the least. I knew a sax player like that once, too. He could barely read music, yet he could play Tower of Power stuff by ear. He could also solo like no other.

Hey, I'm not jealous. OK, I take that back. I'm very jealous, and I guess I'll just never understand it. Except for harmonizing, I have to work for almost everything I do musically. I'm truely thankful for the talent I do have, and music has brought me much joy throughout my life. I just sometimes wonder what it would be like to have an incredible gift like some do.
I don't do this too often but....

Hey Everyone,

I just got a very nice JCM800 100 watt halfstack in on trade. Model 2203 amp with a matching 1960A JCM800 cab. Thought I would offer it to my friends here first. I can't give it away, but it will be worth every penny. This is a cool piece. It has a nick here or there but nothing bad. Let me know.

Well now I've done it...
by LewnWorx on Tue Dec 09, 2003 6:50 pm

Now that I've finally been able to find a few spare hours of copious free time away from work, what's the first thing I do?

I called B&T Dave and Dean and officially get the ball rolling on the first couple of these customs. These are going to be really different, but I'm finally going to have my cake and eat it too. It'll be the first guitars I've ever owned where the electronics are factored in from the get go, which for me is a dream come true.

Dean's in the process of locating the tops of my dreams and I'm finishing up the PCB layouts for the electronics. I'll save the details for later, but these are gonna be damn cool not just electronically, but the whole package.

Many thanks to B&T Dave and Dean for working with me on this (I'm painfully aware my wants are way out in left field), and especially my wife for insisting I get these done.

My biggest dilemma now that the nuts and bolts are figured out is deciding on color schemes. I'm having a hard time calling the ball on that part.

Ozzy in hospital
by Anonymous on Tue Dec 09, 2003 8:09 pm
I am seriously upset by this. He's on a venthilator and has a broken vertebre in his neck plus 8 broken ribs. I hope he's ok. Ozzy was my fave for a long time. I name my boy after Randy Rhoads. I am the first person to say I have no sympathy for the morons who kill themselves and screw themselves up with drugs and Ozzy is no different but I have a special affinity for him and I dread the day he dies. I didn't think it would bother me to hear anything like this about him but I am truly sad.

Hope he's going to be ok.

I learned how to cook the hardest/most delishious substance
by Ranma on Tue Dec 09, 2003 8:27 pm
CHOCOLATE.....HA HA HA I melted and worked with chocolate.

I turned raw chocolate and turned it into bitter sweet chocolate truffles. (they were so good I almost dropped Dead {Chocoholic thing})

This may sound wierd but yes I am proud of the fact I can work with the second hardest ingredient to cook with out burning it. (the hardest is melting using water sugar)

wait I have a pic for this one...

Jary Turser axes - lots out there, not familiar with company
by transblueZ on Tue Dec 09, 2003 10:00 pm
I tend to spend some time on eBay while at the office (bad employee, no cookie!) and there are tons of these axes on there at all times. Is this the new/cheap version of Cort and the other cheaper guitar makers of the late 80's? Haven't really kept up with the times.
My first USA guitar (not a Dean) actual photos
by Lon on Tue Dec 09, 2003 11:21 pm
I went to my local GC tonight to look for a used Fender amp. As I was browsing the store for the third or fourth time I noticed an ML kinda shaped guitar way in the back of the huge mass of used ones. I saw the name Carvin and stretched back there and pulled it out. I had never actually seen a Carvin because as you all know they're mail order only. I get the catalogs and they look great, I've heard great things, but never actually seen one. This thing has some weight to it! (I like that). It's all black, looks to be neck thru (I do research when I get home and find it's solid maple with a set neck and a very smooth heel), 2 humbuckers, 3 way switch, 2 toggles for tapping the humbuckers, 2 volume controls and 1 tone control. Brass nut. Kahler Pro trem, Schaller tuners, ebony fretboard and big frets on the big chunky LP like neck. 24 frets. So far I'm in love. I look it over and then head for an amp! I plug into a modest 25 watt Fender and holy cow! Using my trusty Dean pick I play some power chords and some scales and generally just noodle around for about 30 minutes. Sounds great distorted and clean. There's gotta be a catch right? I can't find anything wrong with this guitar, other than the fact that it's not mine. Finally a sales guy comes around and I say "I'll give you $200 out the door". They're asking twice that. He checks the computer, talks to The Man, I fork over $200 and run outta there. I get home and do my research and find that it's an 84-86 model (close as I can track it down with these options) V220. I'll get some pics the next couple of days, but here's a couple of ones very similar to mine. I'm a happy camper!

New Addition to my Dean Collection
by Ranma on Wed Dec 10, 2003 2:29 pm
This is the newest addition to my Dean ML Fam. Yes it is another ML, but hey it is to verify the record that I now have 3 MLs. I had to post it. THe reason why is because I asked for some dean picks and a pair of straps to go with this purchase. As far as the straps went I had no idea that they were going to be dean straps. All I asked for was plain black ones. So, I hope B&T is paying attention.

DAVE AT BASS AND TREBLE MUSIC YOU WENT ABOVE THE CALL BY SENDING ME THOSE DEAN STRAPS. THANK YOU

Serial #'s ... Hardtails in particular

Serial #'s ... Hardtails in particular

I've recently acquired a new 'tail (pics forthcoming). What's strange is that this particular guitar has no serial number on the headstock. It's void of all markings including the Made in USA designation. The serial # attached to the case is USA HTF FD SN-03-10380.

Do you think this was an oversight? Inquiring minds want to know! LOL!
Florida Metal Fest
by Thor Malleuson on Fri Dec 12, 2003 11:20 am
I have gotten emails from Jack Koshick and Rob of Milwaukee Metalfest fame as an invite to play at a great show. Razz They have confirmed that there are indeed plans in the works for a FLORIDA METALFEST to be held at Pinella’s Expo Center in Pinella’s Park (St. Pete area) on MARCH 6th & 7th (yep, the week right after DOA III). As I’m sure you are familiar with the Milwaukee Metalfest, this event is going to be of the same magnitude, and will be one of the premier festivals of the year. The event coordinators have also mentioned that not only will this festival be covered in all of the major Metal publications, it will also be filmed by MTV for Headbanger’s Ball.

I am not sure of the exact line up yet, but possible acts may include Danzig, Superjoint Ritual, Morbid Angel, Dimmu Borgir, Nevermore, Children Of Bodom, Hypocrisy, Strapping Young Lad, Symphony X, Cradle Of Filth, Type O Negative, Nile, Deicide, Suffocation, Hate Eternal, Biohazard, Moonspell, Mastodon, Unearth, Krisium, Bongzilla, Diabolic, The Red Chord, A Life Once Lost, Premonitions Of War, Cannae, Between The Buried And Me, All That Remains, Dysrhythmia, The Devin Townsend Band, among others.

Ezra Stone will be on this bill (with me there hopefully with a new TC V!). Tickets for the two day event are tentatively at $55.00 (US dollars).

I'll post more information when available.
I am gonna have a great weekend!

I re recorded it with my new TC...I am still not happy with the result since my tone always sounds a lot crappier recorded than when I am standing in front of my amp, guess I have a lot to learn about recording!

But it is better than last time...still nice!

New Pickups for my Avalanche MQ
by Truthsayer on Fri Dec 12, 2003 3:32 pm
I purchased a Dean Avalanche MQ in "Power Purple". It turns out to be a very well made guitar with very decent pickups. But I wanted a little different sound. I installed Seymour Duncan Vintage Rails in the neck and middle positions and a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Model in the bridge. The results are everything I could have hoped for in a guitar I plan to use for blues and Texas style rock.

I have already purchased a Dean Avalance One in "Classic Black". I'm looking for more of a Joe Satriani sound and plan to install DiMarzio Fast Track 1 pickups in the neck and middle positions and a DiMarzio FRED pickup in the bridge.

But first.......I'm waiting for my Dean Cadillac Select to come back from the shop. I'm putting a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and a DiMarzio PAF-Pro in the neck. I'll report back when I find out how it turns out.

I can't wait for the Nashvegas guitars to come out. Then my collection will be complete.....................for now?

Things have changed a little. Our band from church is playing Christmas stuff at the local mall tomorrow. With last Saturday's shopping day effectively cancelled due to snow, tomorrow should be, ummmm..... a tad busy at the mall.

The two best songs in our set are "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" done over a Stray Cat groove, and me singing Elvis' "Why Can't Every Day Be Like Christmas."

We'll be at Christiana Mall in front of Strawbridge's. Stop by and say 'hey.'

Vintage Dean Z case for a ML?
by Armitage on Sat Dec 13, 2003 12:26 pm
I've got a Vintage Dean Z case I don't need and would like to trade it for an ML case.
Vintage or Timecapsule as long as it fits an old ML.
The case is in pretty good shape, but is twenty years old.

I guess I could sell it if it's easier and buy a TC case.

Oh, just to complicate things, I'm in Canada.

saw him and his orchestra last night at the Pavillion with my friend dave. played some swing versions of christmas tunes and such. toward the beginning, at the end of a song, he just starts doing some improv, or really well rehearsed solo time. he did it all for about two minutes: lead, rhythm, fret-tapping, he was playing and working the tone knob at the same time for that pedal-like effect. aw man, with that double-bass, it was awesome. if you get a chance, go see him. even if you dont like the music, at least see him for his guitar work.

by Pulse Of The Night on Sat Dec 13, 2003 4:48 pm
Hey guys and gals.

Ugh...life's been chaotic lately and I haven't had a whole lot of time or resorces to check the boards. So far this past week I've been in and out of hospitals and was put on medication for bi-polar, anxiety and depression. I broke up with my girlfriend and was kicked out of where I was living, and now I'm currently living with my aunt with 13 people total living there. (this is a lot of the reason I'm now medicated). I'm forced to not go to work for a week so my meds have a chance to kick in and lose the side effects, which means a serious financial crunch for me. And to top all of that off, my computer died. Yay! Rolling Eyes

Anyways, I'm currently at a library computer and they're telling me that I need to get off of it, so I'll post when I can.

low wattage amps
by ragnut on Sun Dec 14, 2003 9:29 am
Anyone have suggestions for a low wattage (8W or less) tube amp? I just can't seem to be satisfied with the gain tone I'm hearing from pedals or preamps. I'd like to be able to crank a low watt power tube at home without going deaf. I know there's a lot of kits out there, but I'd prefer one that's already built into a combo.

Guitarforceone meets Dischord/Don...
by guitarforceone on Sun Dec 14, 2003 2:04 pm
Here are some pics from Friday night when Don came over to the house. He contacted me, and with very short notice, we made arrangements to meet and jam for a while. Don is going back to Korea soon, and I wanted to meet with him before he left Texas. My wife and I had a really good time talking to Don, and we had fun in the guitar arena as well. Since we were consuming adult beverages, I never got around to showing him all of my guitars, as I began getting sleepy and forgot. Sorry 'bout that, Don. Very Happy

By the way, how did you find your way out of here, Don? We were still asleep when you left.

Don is the second DOA member to come to my place, and ironically, both members were coming from the Far East. Joe from Japan, and Don from Korea...sort of. Smile

Off to see Anthrax tonight...

Another forum member (Heretic Hulk) and I are off to the wilds of Iowa to see Anthrax tonight.

While I've never seen them live before, and was never really a huge fan of theirs, Hulk turned me on to some of the tunes of the new cd. Looking forward to a hard hitting show from these guys.

I've been a fan of John Bush since the old Armored Saint days, when I saw them in Burlington Ia. years ago with WASP and King Cobra (nothing like dating myself....lol)

I'm sure we'll give a post-battle report tomorrow....

Introduction
by z dogg on Sun Dec 14, 2003 9:56 pm
Hello Guys!
New to the board and to Dean guitars (sort of). Just ordered a USA Z cherry sunburst from Dave's Guitar Shop yesterday. It should arrive Thursday or Friday. I must say, that I can't wait. This guitar has everything a bad axe should. I've always liked "explorer" type guitars and zebra coils are a must, they just look right.
Short background: started playing in '77 and stopped in '95. Last week I sold a guitar out of my collection to a friend. I put fresh strings on it and was infected with the "bug" again. I never could get guitars out of my system and now I feel a huge void has been filled since I started playing again.
I've always been in search of the perfect guitar. I've played Gibson and PRS, etc and I'm not impressed. Then I ran accross that Z at Dave's. I thought back to '83 when my folks were gonna buy me my first "real guitar". I played a beat up Z @ this downtown music store. The guitar didn't look like much, black and tarnished hardware but it played like a dream. I've yet to play a guitar like that one. I kinda feel like I've come home, so to speak. I'm glad Dean is back in a major way and am looking forward to getting back on track with my music.

Thanks for reading and rock on,

Jack
Fret inlay question
by transblueZ on Sun Dec 14, 2003 10:20 pm
Another question from the person that really only knows how to plug the thing in, turn it on and turn it up (not a bad sequence to follow)

Was thinking of picking up one of those Epiphone Iommi SG's, but the current ones only have the Cross Inlays to the 12th fret. Is it a super pain the buttocks to have 4 more done at a custom shop - don't trust myself to do much other than change strings.

thx.

Zebra Pickups?
by Sinker on Mon Dec 15, 2003 10:11 am
I've played acoustic for years, but my EVO FT is my first electric. It seemed like the best bang for the buck in the price range: Grover tuners, set neck, plus it 'felt right' for whatever that's worth. Anyway, I know squat about pickups, and was just wondering if somebody could tell me something about the Zebras in my EVO.

I'm currently playing through a Roland Cube 30. The various tones available from the distortion models are overwhelming, I''ll play with them later. Right now I'm concentrating on trying to maximize a warm, clean tone with just a hint of delay and chorus. I know I'm asking a lot from a Korean-made guitar and a cheap SS amp, but believe me, I'm having a blast and am kicking myself for not diving in earlier. I'm also making some tones I really like (limited experience, you know).

I guess my questions are: 1) With my current set-up, would I notice a big improvement in tone if I were to upgrade the pickups?

Coil Tap? I know what it's supposed to do, but it sounds like crap when I switch to the 'single coil' mode.

Pickup selector. I assume down is bridge, up is neck and middle is both. I'm currently using mostly the middle position because I can't decide which I like best and for what purposes.

I'm not asking much, am I?

Go ahead, talk to me. Or send me to the appropriate resources.

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone had a chance to try an Obrien amp. I played one this weekend and they are amazing. They have a varible gain control that is basically a pedle that pans from channel on to channel two. I was really impressed by the tone both clean and dirty. Just wondered if anyone has heard them.
Dean Custom 450

http://www.deanguitars.com/custom_450.htm

Seriously thinking about getting it, but it all sounds too good to be true! D:

My requirments on a next guitar:
- 24 good accesible (if thats a word lol) frets
- Good Tremolo system that will allow me to do Vai/Satch like whammy bar abuse
- At least 2 GOOD humbuckers

The Custom 450 kinda fits this, and is only 500€ here! Most guitars with this kind of stuff on it (looking at jackson/ibanez) are at least twice that price! How come?
Arent the pickups not that good? I always thought EMG was nice...
Isnt the tremolo system good? I always thought floyd rose was nice....
Is the neck just inferior compared to more expensive guitars?
Or is it like my wet dream coming true, a beautiful guitar with beautiful stuff on it for a beautiful price? =))

Im clueless

Ow and....I know everyone here likes deans, but please be honest if ur going to answer =) (as in no "OMG ITS DEAN SO ITS GOOD OMG OMS OSMODMOMGOS GU SUCK FOR DOUBTING OMG DIE!!!" stuff....lol)

caddy number 1
by guitardave on Mon Dec 15, 2003 7:29 pm
I'm new to the forum and a bit uneducated about some of the Deans. I saw a caddy hand signed and marked as number 1 of 100 at a store in St. Louis. , MO . This is a new guitars and is beautiful. Can anyone give me a run down on this series of guitar. Is it one of the anniveresary guitars? I assume it is collectable.

Also saw a Euro-custom Icon there. I thought they quit making this line of guitar in Europe. Any info on both guitars would be great .

Thanks,
Dave
KOREAN DEAN 'Z"
by DELUXE on Tue Dec 16, 2003 3:44 am
I've been playing Deans since junior high 1980. I have an old 81' z flame series. I just recently purchased a Korean Dean z. serial# E101057. The old 81' always sounded better than alot of the Gibson explorer.s I've owned.A real 76' natural, 84' black, and another real 76' that had been refinned white. The old gibson's were o.k. guitars but, never sounded as good! My question is what year is the Korean Dean? It sounds great! It's all original with the zebra buckers. I thought I would have to replace the parts but, I looked inside and saw alot of cheap looking parts, jack. toggle, wiring. pot.s all looked very cheap but, the guitar sounds great! are the dean zebra's better than the duncan designed pups in most imports? I suspect the string thru tail=piece contributes alot to the tone? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Today it finally came! Cool

And oh yeah, it's perfect. Neck feels SO good, fit's like a glove to my hands. Exellent playability(had little doubts, because I never tried a Dean V neck before). Finishing is top notch and the top is beautiful.

I´m very very happy! Tomorrow's the band practise day, then we'll see how I like those Super Distortions.

Big thanks to Dave @ Bass & Treble for making this happen. And also thanks to Dean Z for creating these fine instruments.

My first, but not the last Dean USA. Here are few quick pics. I will take better ones in daylight.

My "discovery"
by ragnut on Tue Dec 16, 2003 4:52 pm
I've always liked the tone of the Duncan JB, '59, and Alnico II pickups. In general, I like a tone that is well balanced -- a good mix of bass, mids, and treble, and these pickups seemed, to me at least, to best cover this. If you haven't listened to Seymore Duncan's pickup soundbites, here's a link:
http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/SDToneWizard/hummer.htm#1

Then I saw a tonechart SD puts out on their pickups, and I was curious as to how these 3 pups were EQed. They are very similar, but I was surprised when I saw their mids were very low in proportion to their bass and treble. So I thought to myself, "well, maybe I prefer scooped mids rather than all-balanced." Here's the link to SD's tonechart:
http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/tonechart.shtml#hum

But then I learned about the Fletcher Munson effect that BobtheNuke alluded to in the "low wattage amp" thread, where low and high frequencies require a higher dB level to give the perception of the same loudness as middle frequencies, especially at lower volumes. Now I'm thinking this is why the JB, '59, and Alnico II sound well-balanced to me -- a pickup that emphasizes bass and treble and scoops the mids will probably sound more balanced.

Those SD links are awesome -- check them out if you haven't already.

Hello,
I just bought a gnx3 and have it hooked up to my stereo for a monitor. I've got this cakewalk software but do I really need it? I've done all the panning and level setting on the 8 track, could I just hook the gnx3 up to a cd burner and make a disc w/out mixing down the 8 tracks to 2? It seems like I'm kinda mixing down if I hooked the two outputs to the burner. Yes, I'm being lazy. Very Happy

by kurioskurion on Wed Dec 17, 2003 1:17 pm
Hey what's up fellow axemen!!

Not sure if we have a bunch of LOTR fans in here. However I wanted to tell you all about my amazing adventure.

I was blessed to be able to take place in the Lord of the Rings trilogy marathon yesterday. It began at 1:00 pm and we watched all three movies consecutively. We watched the full version of the first two movies (all the extra scenes added in). And then the premier of the Return of the King started at about 10:00 pm. When it was all said and done the experience ended at about 1:30 in the morning! 12 whopping hours of LOTR mania!

It was amazing! And the third and final movie is increadible. Even if you're not a Lord of the Rings fan you should go see this movie. Of course you'd be smart to rent the first two movies so you know what's going on. anyway, anybody else planning on seeing it?

Oh and sorry I didn't see any Dean guitars there or in the movie.. but i did look.. Laughing

I showed everyone my picture and the little story I wrote about my uncle and my whole family thanks Dean Zelinsky for being so nice and I told them about this forum and they wanted to thank you for being so nice also.

I also found out today that the guy who killed my uncle will be going to trial in January somtime. I hope he gets what he deserves.

I just thought I'd share that. They knew how much that guitar ment and they knew how much my uncle Tom would like this...

Thanks all.

Opinions needed !

Our Company is having a Management Conference in the beginning of the year and I happen to be on the committee. We are looking for a musical theme that will be consistent with the Conference theme which is "Good to Great"

Since this is my extended family and you all have great musical taste, I figured I would try my shot at posing the question and see what turns up!

Remember the Clinton musical theme to their campaign... Fleetwood Mac's "Don't stop... Thinkin' about Tomorrow" blah blah blah...

You get the drill.....

Thanks!

Its that time again. The Somerled Blues Project is getting ready to hit the recording studio (okay, the recording corner the bedroom) to record a few blues songs for my uncle for the holidays. Anybody have some suggestions and what to do? Just Me on lead guitar and vocals, Coyote on rythm guitar, and Skyelander on bass.

the crunch for this is I have to program in the drums, and teach the boys their parts.

Truisms about message boards
by Lon on Thu Dec 18, 2003 2:12 pm
From another forum and originally from a horse forum:

"How many message board members does it take to change a lightbulb?

Answer: 422

1 - to change the lightbulb and post it to the board that the bulb has been changed.

14 - to respond and share similar experiences.

7 - to caution about the dangers of changing lightbulbs.

27 - to point out spelling errors and grammatical errors in postings about changing lightbulbs.

53 - to flame the spell-checkers.

156 - to write to the administrator to complain about the lightbulb discussion and its inappropriateness to the board.

111 - to defend the relevance of the lightbulb discussion.

27 - to post website addresses where one can see different examples of lightbulbs.

14 - to complain that the website addresses are incorrect and post correct ones.

12 - to "leave the board forever" because they can't handle the lightbulb controversy.

addenda:
57 - to chime in that even though you are at home changing this lightbulb you should be wearing safety equipment.

1- moderator to remind that the light bulb better be in the barn to keep this on topic.

31 - to chime in saying they use approved safety equipment even when shopping for lightbulbs

Don't forget about the 20 that ask if you asked your vet, the 35 that ask if you asked your trainer, and the 1 that asks if you talked to
the horsie psychic!!"

It is 422 until you count the ones listed in the addenda, then it is 567. Too funny and SO true

Got my Z today. Of course Dave's sealed it up good in a shipping box which has a "don't open for 24 hrs". Well, I took it out of the box but have not opened the case. To tell you the truth, the case feels the same as the guitars under my bed. Should I:

1. leave it alone until tomorrow.

2. give it a couple of hours and open the latched to slowly vent the axe.

3. go crazy (sorry, already there) Very Happy

I just played my new Z.......
by z dogg on Fri Dec 19, 2003 1:49 pm
I know you guys already know this but I'll say it anyway.....it's the best playing guitar I've ever owned. It's perfect in every way. I only started back playing a couple of weeks ago and the first guitar I picked up was my PRS CU22. I thought it played pretty good. Now that I have played the Z, that PRS is banished to the closet. Heck it tears up my old buddy, the Les Paul. This is the guitar I remember from years back. It's so easy to play, I'm just shocked.

The only thing I have to get used to is the pups, they sure are wired different from a Les Paul. All the tones I get are killer.

The dealer I bought it from forgot to send the booklet and stuff, I e-mailed Dean to see if they would mail it. In the meantime, what guage string is on my USA TC Z?

To sum up, this axe is more than I could ever hope for and I plan rock the house down for many years to come. Dean is the only one for me!

Got a HARDTAIL yesterday!!!
by AmpliFIRE on Fri Dec 19, 2003 4:37 pm
I've been gasing for one of these since the Philly guitar show. I recently got a bonus from work, so I said F IT and bought one. What an amazing guitar! The fit and finish is top notch for sure. The top has INCREDIBLE flame and is perfectly bookmatched. I was just playing it for the last hour and it sings! The 59 in the neck has a beautiful bell-like quality clean and sounds sweet for through the Powerball's 3rd channel. The JB in the bridge is awesome as well (once I boosted the bass on the amp a bit). The neck on this guitar is by far one of the best I've ever tried. It is very much like a LP in it's contour plus it has a 24 3/4" scale. Beautiful Ebony neck and stunning inlays.

Here's a picture of it:

SPECIAL DOA NEWSLETTER !!!
by PresidentDave on Sat Dec 20, 2003 2:16 am
Hey, Everybody. I didn't have a newsletter planned but there are a couple of things that need to be discussed before the first of the year, so here we go!!

WHO'S COMING TO DOA III ???

Before the old forum was hacked, there was a thread posted about who was coming to DOA III. We need to get a head count as soon as possible. There is only so much room and so please respond and let us know if you are planning to come. It is sure the be the social event of the year, so make plans now to attend. Send Jim a note at doa_jim@hotmail.com and have him put you on the list. With that said, please read the next topic.

SHOW US YOUR CHOPS !!!

On Friday night at FOA III, Pat Baker (Dean guitar tech) will be on hand with his band, Anita Brunette. If you would like to sit in with the band and show off your licks, then you should let us know now. Send me, Brave Dave, an email at bravedave@deanguitars.com. and let me know if you want to reserve a spot. Be aware that Pat's band play primarily classic rock.

MICHAEL ANGELO BATIO ROCKS DOA III !!!

Yes, it's official! "Mr. Blinding Speed on the Fretboard", Michael Angelo Batio will be on hand Friday night for the DOA III party. He will be playing several selections that are sure to thrill and amaze you. Go to the Dean Guitars main page and there's a link to watch his video, "Speed Lives". If you have seen this, then you know what I am talking about. Speaking from personal experience, this is something you will be talking about for years to come.

DOA III is only a couple of months away and I am really looking forward to seeing some old friends and making some new ones. We had 19 members attend DOA II and I am betting we will have many more to DOA III. Hope to see you there!

Brave Dave
Serial numbers not forgotten
by trapper189 on Sat Dec 20, 2003 8:04 am
I just looked at the TC Cadillac I got yesterday and the finish is so thick, it filled in the stamping for Made in USA and the serial number. I had to take it outside in direct sunlight and hold it just right and even then I could only make out Made, USA, 3 6 8. I couldn't see this it the wood either, only in the reflection. I'll bet this is what is happening on the other guitars that people believe are missing the serial numbers.

hey all,

I'm thinking of selling my AVT50, and buying a randall 100w 2x12" combo. my AVT50 is having a lot of problems. when i switch channels, the amp either switches and switches back to the channel i was changing from, or the amp turns off! so i'm buying a new amp for christmas. how's the quality of the randall? i think the model is called RG100SC or something like that.

Fender Champ 12 Class A Tube Amp
by hsech on Sun Dec 21, 2003 12:32 am
Has anyone tried one of these. I now have two of them. They only made them between 1987 - 1992. It's really a cool little class A amp. It's got a single 6l6GC power tube and two 12AX7A's in the preamp. It's got a 12" speaker and puts out about 15 watts. I bought both of mine off eBay for about $200 each. They really kick a-- for a small amp. There is a Torres Mod kit that has two resistors and two pieces of wire and a single screw. The mod kit is soldered in between the two volume controls on the amp. It brings up the clean channel and lowers the gain a bit on the lead channel. If you can get your hands on one you ought to try them out. Real blusey sound. Made in the US. The little amp really kicks butt with my hot rodded Tele and my G&L Legacy. It shreds with my Gibson SG. If anyone is interested I'll send pics.
So what does everyone want for Christmas?
by Anonymous on Sun Dec 21, 2003 2:55 am
Though i'm not big on Christmas, I find it's a good time to spend a lot of money and not feel guilty. So what does everyone want for christmas? I already bought one of the things on my list... METALLICA TICKETS!!! Got them this morning, but I didnt want to start a post about it, seeing as how everyone has a hemroid over Metallica. I'm also buying a new amp, and perhaps a new guitar, a Fender (sorry) Highway 1 Telecaster (sorry, not a Dean). And last but not least, 5.10 Anasazi Velcro climbing shoes.

What do you guys and girls want?

A tale of two 'tails...
by clmazza7 on Sun Dec 21, 2003 9:39 am
I purchased my first Hardtail a little over a year ago and was astonished by it’s tone and workmanship. It quickly became my favorite axe…. I just had to have another one. What you see here is the newest addition to my extended family, an ’03 ‘tail in Faded Denim. Another amazing piece of work! This baby screams! The pups in it must be different than my quilt Hardtail because it has a tone all it’s own. I haven’t had the time to pull them out and have a gander….. but I will shortly because it just explodes in the bridge position!

I have been using www.walagata.com since the Dean crash. It's free and easy enough that even I figured it out. Once you have a photo posted there just copy the link and come back here. What is a little screwy here is that you have to hit the Img button once, paste your photo url in, then hit the Img button again and then the space bar once. Works for me.

Intonation problem
by Sinker on Sun Dec 21, 2003 2:24 pm
This may sound like I'm stupid, but I am.

I’ve got an ’02 EVO FT.

My tuner indicates that each string is in tune, but my G-string is sharp when playing a 1st position D major. The tuner shows (and my ear confirms) that everything else is pretty much spot-on. I know it sounds weird, but it's only when playing an 'A' (2nd fret) on the G string (like I said, when playing a D chord) that I have the problem. If I barely press, it's in tune, but if I put additional pressure it moves very sharp. I'd guess close to 1/4 step. Harmonics and octave/12th fret all seem fine. I've been playing this guitar for about 6 months, and this intonation problem is new.

Do I need another set-up? Is this possible a nut problem?
Ouch!!

Hard Tail or Les Paul????
by papersoul on Sun Dec 21, 2003 11:37 pm
That is my question! Hi guys! Happy holidays!!

I am about to sell off two Hamers in the quest for a new guitar. As much as I love my Hamers, I want something else and think these could get a better home elsewhere.

I currently have two Evos (Special and Deluxe) and am thinking of saving for a Hard Tail or possibly a Les Paul. I say LP, because I tend to always lean toward big mahogany guitars with the Paul style. I just love that thick and huge tone that only seems to come from a certain design. Since I already have two Evos, I am not buying another......rather I though of a Les paul.

But, the possibility of owning a HardTail is amazing and that would really add to me Dean collection.

Can any LP guys add to this post and help me? I may have to take an out of state trip to Delaware tio check out that HT.

Thanks!!

Gamblers: Hear this!
by Ziggy on Mon Dec 22, 2003 3:16 pm
Just a thought:

Wouldn't it be nice if we could stage a give-away competition on the forum?
I don't mean that Dean should give us a guitar, but that we could arrange some kind of lottery...

If those interested bought a ticket worth $10 or so, that could result in quite a fine prize....

Example: 60 people by a ticket and the prize is a guitar worth $600... (Yeah, I know you all figured that out, but bear with me on this!)

More simple matemathics:
The chance of winning would be 1 to 60, and those are great odds!

What do you say?

Should we give it a try?
Does anyone know why Jeff/Tone cancelled ML auction?

New to the Dean family!
by southpawZ on Tue Dec 23, 2003 12:13 am
Hey guys, my name is Dave...sorry if I get the wrong forum(only one shows up!) ...I just purchased my first dean guitar today. I actually had it on layaway for about a month and a half. Its a 1996 Custom Shop USA model Baby Z, complete w/ full binding, 59s...one hot guitar. I'm a lefty, so I'm going to be flipping it upside down and getting a new nut, intonation adjustment, etc. But I must say I am impressed w/ this guitar. I think the store originally had it for $1400...but I picked it up for $800, because for the 6-7 years it had been in the store, nobody bought it!( they still have its twin sister for sale, a Dean ML, dark translucent blue) Pictures will be posted asap. Have fun guys,

Dave

DBJSBML/Zen review
by DINASTY on Tue Dec 23, 2003 9:44 pm
DBJSBML;

I've had a littel while to play with this know and I'll give you kind of a run down about what I think. The neck on this is a lot thinner than both my MLX and and my USA ML. Oddly, it's not uncomfortable to me (I like really fat neck, skinny ones cramp my rather large hands). the finish is top notch, and the fret job was actually fairly good. Not as good as a USA, but far better than my MLX. fairly good, I amde a few filings rel small, and polished teh frets, and now it's good to roll. I am NOT impressed witht eh pups AT ALL. these WILL be replaced. they are allright in their output, but they sound thin, if that makes sense. These will either get reaplceed with Seymour Duncan Distortion i teh bridgea dn Symour '59 in the neck, or DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and DiMarzio '59 in the neck. Unsure which though. also, all the pots and the switch will be getting replaced too, as these koreans pots always seem to burn out after you sweat on them for about a month. This guitar is VERY light, lightest ML of ANY that I own. It is also a little thinner in teh thickness of the body. This isn;t a bad thing. I like a heavy body, but it's also nice nmot having a back breaker to wear on stage. While I don't think this would replace either of my Custom ML's (either hte ankh or the natural custom) for recording purposes, I think this will make a great show guitar; killer finish, and after the elctronics are replaced it';ll ahve a grgeat sound, and light for those long nights. plus, I won;t be quite as upset if some drunk knocks this one over or spills beer on it like I would if it were one of my customs. GRanted, I'll still tear him limb from limb, but still... The action is a littel funny... Strting tension is a little high, yet teh strings rattle on teh board a little... i'm gonna give it a totoal set up, plus install teh Buzz Fieten Tuning System, which will eliminate all these problems. oh yeah, and the Series 2 headstock is KILLER! So, all in all, This is a great guitar, but the electronics got to go, but this is jujst my personal preferances.

The Zen Acoustic/Electric;

WOW! My old acoustic just got retired. This review will be short and sweet. This guitar plays ABSOLUTELY GREAT! for an acoustic, it plays almost as easily as my electrics! the looks were top notch! and MAN is this guitar LOUD! i mean LOUD!!!!!! the fishman system in it is great, adn this will make my acoustics gigs so much easier and better sound to boot! It's sounds Excellant. Now granted, it is not a Martin HD-28, but it didn't cost $2500 either. And to be truthful, New martins don;t sound as good as old martins, unnless you buy martins new HD or "pre-war appointments" series guitars. I do NOT like the new D-28's, they lack that charectoristic martin "BOOM". so I'd take this Zen over an new D-28 anyday, and that's a $1500 guitar!!!!! For what I paid, I got MORE than my money's worth!!! this guitar comes VERY VERY VERY HIGHLY recomended. I consider the HD-28 the pinnicle of acoustics,a nd honestly this comes DAMN close. DAMN CLOSE... almost frighteningly close. Oh, the case and certificate are KILLER!

I used a very low bitrate for speedy download, but you can still hear how good the Dean sounds. Thanks to all who listen.

Idea for a guitar.
by Pulse Of The Night on Wed Dec 24, 2003 5:57 am
Hey guys and gals.

a couple days ago, I was sitting down and drawing original guitar/bass body designs, and an idea struck me...something I've never really thought about before. I was drawing a design, and it looks something like a twisted version of a reversed ML. So that got me thinking and I decided to further investigate my curiosity so I drew it how an ML would normally look...but a mirror image of it. I actually liked it, which is why I'm sitting here at 1am typeing this post. And also because I'm at my aunt's work place and I'm useing her computer. Rolling Eyes

Anyways, let me know what you think.

Another thing I'm gonna do ASAP is scan the page I've been drawing my recent designs on. I'm curious about what other people think about them.

Catch ya later

Got my strat neck back finally
by Lon on Wed Dec 24, 2003 6:29 pm
I had the Fender/Kubicki neck I got fram Dana awhile back sent to NY for some work and it came back today. I had won a contest for a free refin, but the lady that does the work and I agreed that that would probably diminish the value of it, so she sent it to a luthier friend who leveled/crowned/polished the frets, and she got me some new Klusons and aged them to match the neck. The photos make the neck look beat, but I swear this thing feels like no other strat neck I've held. And now that the frets have been brought back to life, look out! It has a real dark golden/yellowed color to it so the pics are pretty true in that respect.

re-stringing MLX with lighter guage
by Anonymous on Thu Dec 25, 2003 4:27 am
Hi people.
I just got my MLX back from the shop today, I had a Bill lawrence L500XK pickup put in, and also some new stings. I tried the Zakk Wylde signature series strings. Well the low end is just to damm heavy, their like steel beams. So I wanna put some light guage strings on myself. This is the model with no tremolo on it. Is there anything i need to know?... what will i have to adjust if i go down to GHS boomers 9's.

Dean Czech handmade V finish question
by sekler on Thu Dec 25, 2003 3:40 pm
Hi guys,

i just received my Dean Czech Korina V, and the plastic nut was kinda unglued, so while it was strung , I just pushed it a bit to place it back right.

As I inspected the guitar before, I didn't see these two surface cracks that where starting from the nut at 2 places, so I'm pretty sure I did them while replacing the nut..I'm a dumbass..

anyways, the cracks look kinda like plant's roots, maybe around a centimeter long, looks a bit like finish checking..i,m kinda pissed off since the seller on ebay, had an awesome feedback, and packed the guitar so well that it could have survived a nuclear bomb. It was in a hardshell case, the hardshell being in a big LTD box, full of styrofoam and bubblewrap. I think that finish checking would have appeared at other places if it would have been that..

That being said, I'd like to know if I could do anything so I can touch up these, and to stop the cracking since I guess with vibrations and all, it'll prolly expand..I prefer not to use nail polish as It'll probably be a sloppy smudge, unless there is nothing else I can do...

**PS, sorry for you guys on HC, since I posted the same topic in the guitar forum..I just really need some advice..

thanks !

Problem w/Edge 4
by Hwangman on Thu Dec 25, 2003 6:07 pm
I just bought a slightly used Edge 4 bass and tried it for the first time this morning. The 9v cavity was empty, but i assumed that it didn't need that to run...no sound when plugged in. I put a new 9v in and suddenly the bass was working fine. My friend has a comparable bass (active), and when his 9v dies, the bass runs as passive...apparently mine does not.

Does the bass require a 9v at all times, or can it run as passive and mine just has a electronics problem?

hey, i just received this guitar today and i'm a beginner. i've had troubles with strings in the past (i've popped on 3 in about a month on someone else's guitar). i tend to strum kinda hard when i get into it. i've heard that the guitar has a lot to do with what strings are best, so i was wondering if anyone else out there has a performer e and can tell me what they use. thanks a bunch.

Coloured Tolex
by Anonymous on Thu Dec 25, 2003 11:59 pm
Hey all,

I'm buying my new amp tommorow, and I had an idea: why not screw around with my old 15w amp! i'm planning on stripping off the black tolex. does anyone know where i can get coloured tolex? stew mac only has black. I want either red or white.

thanks!

nick

PS:
how do i strip off tolex? it's it like removing grip tape from a skateboard? do i take a blow drier and slowly melt the adhesive (sp?) and slowly peel at the same time? no worries if i screw up, so that's always good! Laughing
Hi, I need help
by Anonymous on Fri Dec 26, 2003 12:26 am
Please excuse me if I have posted this question under the wrong catagory. -[my first time posting.]

Ok. Right now, I have a Les paul Jr, and a red SG knockoff. I wanna get a real guitar within the next few months. Specifically, I'd like a Dean Cadillac Select. I love these for their style and the fact that I can find them for under $500.

My problem:
I Want one, but I'm not extremely fond of the bright colored burst-finishes available. Tiger-eye is ok, as it is on the darker side. But the fancy quilted top isn't my style. A nice, solid black would be great, and would compliment the neck inlays and sexy cream binding.

Any responses at all would rock my socks off.

z and explorer body styles NOT the same!!!
by Original Recipe Ozzman on Fri Dec 26, 2003 11:02 am
hello all.... after extensive reasearch, i have found why dean's z body style is more appealing than the explorers, in addition to the dean's lack of a pickguard and yummy trans colors, i have observed that the upper "boner" part of the z is blunter, and i believe, shorter, than that of the explorer,

here look for yourself,

then the dean

i also believe, on the dea, that the line cutof thing on the bottom, is a less radical slope, and is slightly more horizontal than the gibby's......

My Best X/mass Present Izzz...
by deanmaniac on Fri Dec 26, 2003 2:23 pm
Well, I'm back in a "Band" Situation, again. My solo/blues thing iz going on hold, or at least to the 'in addition-to' status. Gonna be doin a trio with a vocalist, ala Led Zepp, et al, heavy blues based riffs, with a new twist. That twist being two and three part harmony vocals. Everyone can sing. Cool! Like a meaner version of Mars Electric, with Mars Electrics' kick a$$ drummer. My brother. So I'm casing the Strats fer a while. Now I need some 'bucker equipped axes. I revamped my eVo Special w/DiMarzios, so that ones' going along. I came across an old guitar that I had custom built in the eighties, sortuva Satriani kinda thing with a floyd. Over the years, I've given out soo many guitars for safe-keeping/borrowing, that I've lost track of em all. I even visited my '81 ML at it's new home, but... Rolling Eyes Whatta baseball bat of a neck. Not a possibility. I'm thinking an Evo of US origin(pleeze, winter namm rumors be true!) and a Hardtail will round out the bullpen for this project. I'm going to be using my multi amp rig, and I'm having fun today, digging out my footlocker of old stompboxes! Cool! Best part iz we WILL record in a real studio, with a real engineer and producer. So, I get to be just the guitar player, and that suits me fine. I'm gonne let 'er rip! Should be a fun year, eh? Oh yeah, my new years resolution izz: stop punching a timeclock, and do what I was born to do in this world. Any bodee out there remember how to ROCK AND ROLL!!?! Where's my high tops and leather pants? whoooo hooooo! Twisted Evil PS, I wish Larry B.(the doc) was here to explain these publishing rules to me..... Confused PPS, I took a bunch of pics of my studio and amps and guitars, but there's no link anymore to post em. WHY GOD WHY?
Hey OldBluesman! SRV question
by Sinker on Fri Dec 26, 2003 2:30 pm
Saw in the Christmas post that you got the SRV in Austin DVD. I bought it for myself when I was picking up some DVDs for my wife and kids. It's an awesome disk; it's two Austin City Limits shows, one from '83 and one from '89.

I noticed something weird I wanted to check with you on. Everything is a 1/2 step flat. Stevie's playing in E and A, but I'm playing along (just rhythm) in Eb and Ab. Did he really tune down a 1/2 step, or is that a by-product of recording/making the DVD? I tried to figure it out by watching the keyboard, but it was too fast.

I was wondering what someone thinks of Bartolini pickups as I have never played a guitar outfitted with these p'ups. I hear they are dynamite pickups and wonder how they stack up against Duncans or my favorite, Rio Grandes. I am most interested in the Bartolini ZBS 70.

Thanks for any input!
I do love the busted ones...

Picked up this edge bass:

Obviously an edge, but the duckbill isn't on any recent ones.. Any idea how old this might be?
The top looks cool, think I'll take it down to bare wood and oil-finish it..

I got some money for Xmas, so I bought a Korg ToneWorks Modeling Signal Processor. It's awesome! 63 effects, amp simulators, 50 rhythm drum machine, loop record/play, you name it. All for just over $100.
