Need help to identify my Dean Guitar from ebay ..
Hi,
anyone know how to identify this model exactly? Only got vague ideas:
There is a Floyd-Rose Trem i did not expect
and the toggle switch
position is odd, as is the fork machine head shape.
Any inputs welcome
Worst poss. start to a new year

Well, as most of you know, all I have to play on right now is a 15 watt Squier P.O.S. amp. I don't like it, but I could live with it until I can find an affordable replacement (namely the Peavey PA I want). Well last night me and my cousin were playing for like 5 hours straight and I guess we put a little too much power into it between the 2 of us. Well, long story short, my grandfather took a look after it just stopped working altogether (won't even turn on) and said it might just be that we blew a fuse inside. I'm REALLY hoping that's it because if not, I'll be back in debt as soon as I get back to Gainesville. I guess we'll find out tomorrow when I get a replacement fuse.

I may be employing some downtuning on my next record but have never gone this low before and look to you guys for advice.
Some will be dropped to B - B/E/A/D/F#/B and some with the already low B dropped a step lower. Crazy..I know.
Would it be more advantageous to purchase an extended scale guitar/bass or can I actually employ these tunings on standard guitars and basses with severe truss rod adjustments, etc? I, for one, can't see how Zakk can keep these tunings accurate with Les Pauls but then again, that's why I'm posing these questions to y'all.
Thanks...

Anyone ever play the Fender Cyber series amps?
I've been farting around with the Cyber Twin (2X12 combo) and its little brother Cyber Deluxe (1x12 combo) at the local music store. They're pretty fun to fart with, just wondering if anyone has one and can say how they sound outside the music shop (as far as volume, playing with others, recording, etc)
It does have a line out for recording (go into the line in a sound card) that seems pretty cool, and tons of built in goodies. Just not sure if it's worth the $$ over getting a pod or something to use for recording. RIght now I'm just going directly into a distortion pedal to the line in on my soundcard.

From Blabbermouth:
Report: RUSH Guitarist Arrested After 'Drunken, Violent Outbreak' - Jan. 2, 2004
John Henderson of Naples Daily News is reporting thatRUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson faces criminal charges after a scuffle with Collier County sheriff's deputies at The Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Florida on New Year's Eve.
Lifeson, a.k.a. Alex Zivojinovich, a founding member ofRUSH, was arrested after what deputies describe as a drunken, violent outbreak at the posh hotel.
Zivojinovich (mug shot), 50, faces six charges that include aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, and disorderly intoxication. Also arrested in the brouhaha were his 33-year-old son Justin Zivojinovich (mug shot) and his wife, Michelle (mug shot), 30.
Deputies say they had to use a stun gun on Alex Zivojinovich, 8787 Bay Colony Drive, Apt. 804 in Naples, and his son during the fracas. And in their reports they accuse Alex Zivojinovich of pushing a female deputy down a hotel stairwell during the struggle, and of spitting blood on a deputy's face.
But his son Justin, who was visiting his father on vacation from Canada, gave a very different account of what happened during an interview Thursday night.
He said his father, who was still in the Collier County jail as of late Thursday, had his nose broken by deputies, and as he was spitting out the blood from the injuries, deputies assaulted him again. He also said his father did not push the female deputy down the stairs as stated in arrest reports.
Instead, Justin Zivojinovich said, the deputy tumbled down the stairs as she pushed him down the stairwell.
He said the trouble began after he got up on the stage where the house band was performing at the hotel.
"I was singing Happy New Year's, that's all I was doing, singing to the whole crowd. That's all I said, 'Happy New Year,'" Justin Zivojinovich said. "Everyone was enjoying themselves. That's when someone apparently started yelling for one of the security guards. There was no violence on our part.
"I was ready to leave. I was asked to leave, and I said, 'OK, I'm going to go. I'll grab my wife and be out of there.' They didn't want that. They didn't want me to leave on a high note. They felt they would lose. They decided to aggravate me. They stunned me, as well as my father, with a stun gun."
I never knew that Lifeson was stagename.
Little help with playing direct
by Sinker on Fri Jan 02, 2004 8:41 am
If you had to play directly into a PA, which modeler/multi-effects unit would you use?
Cost won't be the deciding factor, but value (bang/buck) is important to me.
Line 6 POD2.0 or XT? Line 6 AM-4 of DL-4?
Behringer V-AMP 2 (or new V-AMP Floor?
BOSS ME-50? GT-6?
DigiTech GNX (1,2,3)? RP (50, 100)?
Not asking for much, am I?

How much for an '81 Baby Z?
by pluto on Fri Jan 02, 2004 8:26 pm
I met a guy selling a bunch of stuff but I only liked his 81 Baby Z with a single DiMarzio zebra pick-up. How much do these go for? It was his brother's, he doesn't know. It's not very clean, kind of tarnished metal, dull red paint, but it felt great. I'd appreciate any help, I'm new to Dean guitars but this one has got my attention. Thanks!
what is your fav music genres? mine is country(old time) and classical rock. I play alot of this stuff on my evo special selecT.

Hello All~
I am mostly an acoustic player looking to get the Dean Evo SS, and was wondering about the set necks, are there any problems with them and can you still adjust the neck? I dont want to sound ignorant, but I am use to the acoustics.

VISUAL SOUND JEKYL AND HYDE OVERDRIVE
Hey Guys,
I have a Visual Sounds Jekyl and Hyde overdrive that I am looking to swap.
I have never really used the pedal that much as it is more for hard rock/metal type music.
I have the original box and paperwork that goes with it, I bought it about 7 months ago.
I would like to swap it for the Visual Sounds Route 66 Pedal.

Control cavity shielding
by Lon on Sun Jan 04, 2004 11:48 am
I've always heard the virtues of doing it, but never did until last night. The strat with the bronze pickguard has Fender Standard Strat electronics, pups, and vintage trem and had the dreaded 60 cycle hum, as well as a buzzy 5 way switch on 3 of the settings, so I decided to give the shielding a try. It took me over an hour to do it (and was a total pain), but it has been the single best hour of work I've EVER done an any guitar. I can now stand directly in front of my amp with everything cranked up and.......not a buzz or pop or anything! Makes my guitar sound even better, and it sounded pretty good to begin with. I did the green one this morning and it's getting Fender Custom Shop 54s as soon as Mr. Postman brings them to me. Can't wait! The guitars are actually identical but the flash makes them look a little different color.
Anyone know and sites where i can find out how much some old 33's, 45's, and 78's are, or know of anyone who likes to buy old records? I recently was givin 700 or so albums that I'd like to get apraised.

I think I changed my mind...(again)
by rochemy on Sun Jan 04, 2004 10:33 pm
On like my first post I was talking about how much I had to have a Caddy select. I said I could only afford a select, and that I wanted to know if it was available in black. I was given a lotta advice and alternative options. These include the Silverburst caddy, checking out some other dean models including the Z, V, and ML....
I was also informed how it was easier than I thought to sit with, and wield the more exotic-shaped deans.
...I had settled on getting a Caddy select in TigerEye, and well..
I thought about how one commenter in the the thread suggested getting a '79 series guitar. Not only because they kick a$$, but because they can be had Black finish with binding I craved, and that they were affordable.
Well, after drooling over various pics, I decided I'm going to continue to save for a saucy DEAN 79' series V. (black)
-I mean geeze, I already got two knock-around off brand guitars to sling over my knee, I can get the V as something to be proud of.
Thanks again for all the advice from you guys back in that post. Truly this place has some of the most knowledgable collectors around.

Easy Pantera solos? Do they exist?
by NickM on Mon Jan 05, 2004 1:44 am

I'll try learning that, what else should i learn?

solution to my p-90 problem
They've finally come up with a solution to my p-90 problem (or lack of p-90 problem) See, I love the sound of a p-90, but since the only deans avaliable with them are the evo-60's, and only in colors I don't like, I've been on the hunt for a used evo60 that I could strip and repaint.
Seems though, that Seymour duncan has come up with the solution to my problem. The Phat Cat pickup has just been anounced, which is a p-90 in a humbucker sized casing. So I can modify my evo SS with some kickbut humbucker sized p-90s with gold covers.

Ray Davies of The Kinks
by jim6 on Mon Jan 05, 2004 4:59 pm
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Singer-songwriter Ray Davies of the celebrated British rock band the Kinks was shot in the leg while chasing thieves who snatched a purse from a woman he was with, police said Monday. He was not seriously injured.
Police said Davies, 59, and the woman were walking near the edge of the French Quarter when the shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Davies was treated and released at a hospital, said Capt. Marlon Defillo, a police spokesman.
One suspect was captured within hours and another person was being sought. The woman was not hurt.
Deke Arlon, Davies' manager in London, said: "He should be up and about in a day or so. The message that came back to me was that he is in good spirits." Neither he nor police would say who the woman was with Davies.
The shooting happened blocks away from Bourbon Street, which was awash with people in town for Sunday night's Sugar Bowl, the Bowl Championship Series game between LSU and Oklahoma. Police were stationed on every corner of the area and were able to respond quickly to the shooting, Defillo said.
The Kinks, part of the 1960s British invasion, had a string of hits including "You Really Got Me,""Sunny Afternoon,""All Day and All of the Night" and "Lola." Davies founded the band, known for its hard-edged, guitar-driven sound and witty lyrics, with his brother Dave.
Last week, Davies received royal honors in London. Along with singer-guitarist Eric Clapton, he was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire at a ceremony on New Year's Eve.
Arlon said Davies was spending time in New Orleans as part of a seasonal break. The manager declined to name the hospital where the star was treated.
The shooting site is a largely residential area on the border of the French Quarter and the Faubourg Marigny area

EVO Ebony in da house!
by kevin7 on Mon Jan 05, 2004 6:32 pm
Hello everyone, just picked up a new old stock EVO Ebony today for $500 out the door! Any way, was putting new strings on it and decided to look in the pickup cavities just to see if they were Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates and low and behold, they were a JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck! No wonder this thing kicks ass! This EVO blows away my PRS Singlecut and my Gibson LP Standard! This evo just flat out smokes and it looks so cool in black with gold hardware! Anybody else own one of these guitars? I think I got a great deal-the thing is dead mint!
Anyone belong to this one?
by BTMN on Mon Jan 05, 2004 7:11 pm
Broken ML, Neck Repairable?
If you have no way to save the neck can it be replaced and where can I find a neck? Dean says they can't get one for me because it's a series II........The larger one, or is it a III?
I had this in the "Newbies" for a couple of days, but no replies, so I thought I would try it here:
I received a new Edge 4 bass for Christmas. No info or papers came with the bass. I know it has a pre-amp. Can someone tell me the functions of the controls (knobs)? My old bass was volume-tone, volume-tone, with a pickup switch, but this is different...
Thanks!
Hey guys....
My friend recently got a guitar and he was wondering what kind of pickup he should get for a jazzy kind of feel. He only wants one and it's gana be the neck pickup so it sould be nice and bright. He's doing this so he can use the tone knob more. He likes it that way. Any ideas?

Dean, will become as known as PRS in the next 5 years!
For a example...
My GF is at my place, and she goes "What is THAT!?"
I say "Its a Dean Hardtail, whoa, aint she a beauty?!"
She sez "Boy, i could start playing guitar if i got one of those!"
Now this is what Dean needs! Guitars that Catch eyes and not like the MLs, Vs, Zs and the pointy guitars, sure they catch eyes, but do they "tell" you to "BUY ME"
It does that dor me, as you surely know that i am a Pointy guitar fan, but guitars like that realy make any1 want them, they are complete beautys! I think that is the Best lookin HT ever made! I sent the pic to my guitar playing friends, who know what the quality of dean guitars is, and they are actualy thinkin of gettin a dean now, seeing that guitar!

switches ..
by assaf_a on Tue Jan 06, 2004 6:54 pm
I recently came up with an idea to improve my guitar's versatillity ..
Its a Custom 450 and it has a 3-way switch .
I want to change it to a 5-way switch - the pickups are good for it and I dont mind the wiring job so I want to know if its possible ..
So if any one has ever done such a thing or knows something about it please help .
Thanks ..
WHO DOES GUITAR REFINISHES???
I went down to my local shop with my Batio Sig yesterday to trade it for the Dean custom 450. {I've been wanting one for awhile}
I jammed it and hung it back on the wall.
While I was working the deal IT FELL OFF OF THE WALL FROM THE SECOND ROW!!!
The shop owner blamed me instead of the busted a$$ hooks with the rubber missing. I left with the guitar but it has SEVERE finish damage on the back and one side. {it's to the wood on the top back edge}
The top is fine and it still plays WONDERFULLY, but I want it fixed.
My question is does anyone know who can refinish the back of this axe and NOT sacrifice the natural wood binding?
This is a neck-thru axe and I NEED PRO WORK...
Thanks guys.
Travis
Hi guys......I might be selling one of my deans. Is there a place on this forum in which to sell? I'd like it to go to a Dean brother if possible.

Testing, one two three, aw fer fooks sake, wait a minute!
Did it work? Yeah, finally. Remember this one TOM? It's got new pickups, frets dressed, new toggle, input jack and push/pull pots, and she SCREAMS! I didn't take the photo(old pic previous to the upgrades) But i'll get a new one up, now that I know how! Should I post pics of my strats that are for sale or is that not kosher, now? yeah....turned the big 3-5 today. I got the Slayer Soundtrack to the Apocolypse from the girlfriend. Cool collection of Slayer goodies, and bootleg and semi pro videos on the DVD. I was at the one show (NYC '86) that has 3 clips on the DVD. Also kinda weird seeing Kerry King playing an explorer on one of the old bootleg clips.
I've got a 7-string Dean that I recieved as a gift. I was wondering if anybody can help me figure out what model it is.
It has a headstock like an avalanche with 7-strings, and an avalanche style body with no pick-gaurd. I searched the site and found nothing like it.
Any ideas?

About the V Noir XT.
by Stormy on Wed Jan 07, 2004 5:03 am
Hi to all... i'd like to know your thoughts about this guitar.
I've realized that very expensive guitars aren't worth to pay (just my feeling), i've just sold my Ibanez RG3120TW Prestige!
I felt nearly the same playing my veeery cheap Academy, which i bougth about $200(new). I put it some DiMarzios and it really sounds good to me.
So, the only thing i ask to a guitar is it being confortable to play, being stable in tune and having a good look. I'll put DiMarzios to any guitar i get, so the rest will come from my heart and fingers.
So, could anyone help me with some opinions of the V Noir XT? what about their playability? Is the neck easy to play? And about the tuning? Are their bridges stable? I'll put it some DiMarzios of course
Any answer will be apreciated.
Thanx.
Good guitar solos
by Ziggy on Wed Jan 07, 2004 5:16 am
I've used my copy and paste function from a website here. Credit goes to Tim Hall at blogcritics.org.Of course these listings are always a matter of taste and opinion...
However, I must agree that the solos in the songs listed below are very good indeed...
Just a little input in case you've missed out on some of them...
Top Ten Guitar Solos:
There aren't enough decent guitar solos in rock nowadays - the 'guitar hero' has gone right out of fashion, it seems. To many people, especially the cloth-eared British music press scribblers, and those that read them, think solos of any kind are somehow politically incorrect, so we end up with bands either endlessly repeating the chorus or putting in inane 'la-la-la' sections in the bit of the song where the guitar solo is supposed to go.
I've listed ten of my favourite solos. Most of them are from the prog-rock or heavy metal genres, and are mostly from the late 70s and early 80s, which probably shows my age.
(The first six originally appeared on Where Worlds Collide)
Buck Dharma - Revenge of Vera Gemini
From Blue Öyster Cult's Agents of Fortune. Buck is one of the great underrated lead guitarists of rock. While his extended solo on the live version of Astronomy from Some Enchanted Evening is wonderful stuff, I really love this solo. Short (I think it's only eight bars long), and simple, but perfect for the song. Not one note is wasted!
Dave Gilmour - Comfortably Numb
From Pink Floyd's The Wall. This is one of those solos everyone lists, but that's no excuse for me not to list it as well. A great example of feel and emotion as opposed to pure technique.
Steve Hackett - The Lamia
From Genesis's Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. While Firth of Fifth was always his live showcase in Genesis days, this emotional solo always causes a tingle down the back of my spine whenever I hear it.
Steve Rothery - This Time of the Night
From Marillion's Clutching at Straws. Another understated and evocative solo; a truly beautiful piece of playing. One of the rare cases of a solo right at the beginning of a song.
Richie Blackmore - Stargazer
From Rainbow Rising. Richie Blackmore was at his peak in the early 70s, both with Deep Purple and with his own band Rainbow. While much of the time his studio playing lacked the fire of his blistering 70's live work on albums like California Jam and Rainbow On Stage, the evocative eastern-sounding solo on the epic Stargazer was a notable exception.
Michael Schenker - Rock Bottom
From UFO's Phenomenon. And Michael Schenker was the phenomenon here. An early example of 'shredding', but with a sense of melody that most shredders lack.
Neil Young - Like a Hurricane
From the live album Weld. This one was suggested by one of the commenters to my original posting, but I have to agree. This is another triumph of feel over technique.
Alex Lifeson - YYZ
From the album Moving Pictures. Alex Lifeson's guitar playing, like Rush's music as a whole, spans the spectrum of hard rock and progressive rock. Some of his best playing can be found on the band's occasional instrumental numbers, such as this wonderful fluid solo.
Ronnie Montrose - Razor King
From the album Gamma. I can't quite put my foot on what I like about the solo, but I think it's as much the tone as the playing.
Randy Rhoads - Mr Crowley
From the album Blizzard of Ozz. Randy Rhoads' potential career was tragically cut short in a stupid accident; his recorded legacy consists of just three albums (two studio, one live) backing that washed-up alcoholic known for biting the heads off bats. Although some accused him of ripping off Eddie Van Halen, his style also included a lot of neo-classical elements. The two solos on Mr Crowley show him at his best.

Used tubes that "test good"
by ragnut on Wed Jan 07, 2004 10:06 am
Now that I have a tube amp, I'm searching to buy different power and preamp tubes to see if I like certain ones more than others. I've ordered some NOS 6V6GT and 12AX7 tubes, but will come across used tubes for sale that "test good" for a lot less money. Anyone have experience buying used tubes that "test good?" Does this usually mean that they work but will probably sound a lot worse? My guess is that it can run the gamut of "sounds just like new" to "sound awful," but wondering if anyone has personal experience with this subject. Also, is there some objective measure by which a tube is graded to be "good" or "bad?"
Justnoldbluzman - I'm calling Bull$hit!!
Someone wanna explain this to me??? Read Justnoldbluzman’s thread “The Ultimate Flying V”.

Any of these look familiar to anyone? Why it’s Bill – famous and on the net and everything! Wow – his pictures are everywhere!

http://f111.virtualave.net/gallery4.html
And I’ll be – about 2/3rds down the page – why..It’s Bill’s diary!! As posted in the other thread! Word for word – taken (or should I say plagiarized) from the article! Written by someone else but passed off as his own diary!
http://www.afa.org/magazine/march1999/0399canyon.asp#
So wanna explain it all Bill? Why did you plagiarized that article and steal those pics and then proudly proclaim – “All shots are of me at the controls. That's me on the left in the hanger.”?
And why you’re at it, wanna explain why the song you posted – Heard it through the Grapevine – why does the singer say – “Take it Jeffery” right before the lead? There’s only one guitar player in that song – the transition is too seamless to be 2 players – impossible. And – whoever is playing the background part sure as hell is talented enough to play the lead!
Why do I get the feeling I’m never gonna see that distortion pedal I just sent you the $100 for? DOH!!!
Something smells bad to Dizzy………….

I just opened the shipping box for my new head and the smell just rolled out its a smell ahrd to explain but kinda like ciggarettes and tolex but different its THAT SMELL if youve been to guitar shows you know what im talking bout!!

I AM GETTING FED UP WITH THE THINGS HAPPENING HERE, SURE ITS GOOD TO SETTLE THINGS OUT, BUT WHY NOT IN A MORE PEACFULL WAY THAN IT HAS BEEN DONE NOW!? one more amp for me to have gear lust for...
I was pretty impressed when THD put out the univalve, but 15 watts wasn't enough to play live. the bi-valve at 30 watts was about right, and sounded great, but still had that class A tone. Now THD is making the Flexi-50, a 50 watt class AB version of the bivalve. Now if I just had $1500 to spend on an amp...

New Dean Guitars with Trems?
by BLOYD on Thu Jan 08, 2004 8:40 am
I was just thinking about this and was wondering when we might see a USA Dean with a trem. I mean...there has been alot of talk around here about Dean Guitars trying to grab some of the PRS market with the Hardtail...but...there is no Hardtail with a trem.
I rarely use a trem...well actually I never use it during lead work...only for occassional chord changes to add some flavor.
I'm not a "whammy king" but it is a tool I use occasionally and like on my guitars.

Acoustic Artist You're Listening to Now
Hey what's up acoustic lovers... by the way.. we need to fill up the 'Wire & Wood' it's lacking!
What acoustic artists are you listening to the most right now?
Lately I've been listening heavily to Jack Johnson.. Trying to learn some his songs. I got his music book for Christmas this year. I've never been good at flat picking so I'm learning really slowly!
Any hints or words of encouragment on how to get better? I'm darn good at strumming and rythm but when it comes to playing tabbed lead stuff.. man its tough...

Forum Intro and a Question
Hi, I'm new here and first off I'd like to say that it's great to finally have a smiley with horns!!! \m/ \m/ My question is this: Are the pickups in the '79 series guitars based of an aftermarket model? Or does anyone know of one that sounds like them, but maybe with a bit more sizzle, so my other (now very jealous) guitars can sound like my V? Thanks!
What's up bro'?? Long time no see!!

tasty '79 v
by rochemy on Fri Jan 09, 2004 2:53 am
in a couple months, I'm getting a 79 dean v.
Heh, aside from all my cosmetic questions on the V that have now been satisfied, my new concern in sound.
I'm no tonefreak. (I have a Epi LP Junior, and I spend a nice chunk fo my time jamming on it)
I just wondered what kind of sound the 79 v pushes. I hoped that it has a nice, fuller Les Paul sound? I really have no idea though, and I plan to buy it regardless, but any feedback would be cool.

Dime interview
by A.D. on Fri Jan 09, 2004 4:14 pm
Former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul damaged a lot of property and trashed plenty of equipment in Dime's home studio last year while working on songs for their new band, Damageplan — and that's when things were going well.
"I had to replace six doors and eight feet of Sheetrock in the bathroom because we were partying nonstop and raising f---ing hell," boasted Dimebag. "Plenty of my guitars went down in flames. We smashed 'em and taped fireworks to 'em and lit them up — you name it."
"Usually what happens," added Paul, "is we'll be down there in the studio and we'll finish a track and come up to the house to hear it. We'll put it on the jukebox and jam it 10 times. Everyone's catching the groove and doing shots, and then hell starts to break loose because we're feeling so good."
Things weren't always so happily destructive for the two. After the demise of Pantera, which broke up last year when singer Philip Anselmo decided he was through with his bandmates (see "Time To Put A Vulgar Display Of Flowers At Pantera's Grave?"), Darrell and Paul fell into a funk. They felt shafted by their longtime frontman and were unsure how to continue without him. Even after picking themselves up by their Texas cowboy bootstraps and writing new material, it took time to settle into a groove. At first they were so concerned with not sounding like Pantera that everything they wrote sounded contrived.
"I tried all these different guitars and amps I don't normally play, trying to get something different out of the deal, but nothing sounded right," Darrell said. "Then I realized the Pantera sound is the old-school sound of me and Vinnie ripping it up and anything we play is always gonna sound like us."
While the band's debut album, New Found Power, due February 10, is filled with tornado riffs, frenetic double bass drums and surging grooves reminiscent of Pantera, the songs display more diversity than anything by the pair's former band. Damageplan embrace contemporary textures reminiscent of Deftones, heavy melodies like Sevendust's and even industrial experimentation owing a nod to Nine Inch Nails.
"We wanted to stretch out and expand our capabilities to their fullest," Darrell said. "If you look back to the early Pantera days, we had the melody in songs like 'Cemetery Gates,' and then it just kind of worked its way out of there. The dimensions started closing and we focused on the all-hard-and-heavy angle. With Damageplan we definitely wanted to branch back out."
Aiding the band in their mission is singer Patrick Lachman, whose multidimensional voice easily tackles ominous moaning, full-throated melodic singing and larynx-shredding roars. Lachman, who used to play guitar in the band Halford, befriended Darrell in 2000. When Rob Halford was invited to rejoin Judas Priest last year, Lachman, out of a gig, called Darrell.
"I said, 'Well, I got the guitars handled,' and he said, 'Dude, I can sing. Let me take a shot at it,' " Darrell recalled. "So we gave him 'Crawl,' and about three days later he FedExed it to us, and it totally kicked f----ing ass. So we gave him a couple more tracks, he nailed them, and it was on."
The first New Found Power single, "Save Me," goes to radio January 26. One of the more accessible tracks on the sonically diverse album, "Save Me" is about the struggle each bandmember underwent to overcome depression and frustration.
"Usually you can do more damage to yourself than anything else that can f--- you up," Darrell said. "I was cookin' along just fine, and then everything started to unfold [when Pantera fell apart]. It was like, 'Holy sh--, what's going on here?' But that's just life, and it hit me one day that this has got to be a test to see if I've got the balls and strength to overcome all these things that were coming at me. I basically had to save myself from myself. So I did it, and now everything's going great again."

Evo better than the Les Paul?
I would say so! I am still in awe of my Evo Deluxe since swapping out the pickups in this thing. I still can't get over the tone and playability of this guitar for the price! BenChafin must be a genius.
My Evo has that midrange thump that the LP has! But, it doesn't lack bottom either.
Any other Evo lovers out there?
Sorry.....just had to

Hi guys,
anyone familiar with the care of ebony fretboards? I noticed that the frets feel like they are sticking out farther on my Evo Deluxe since it's gotten so cold and our air heat is pumping away. It seems like the wood is shrinking similar to a maple unfinished fretboard. I picked up some Dunlop fretboard conditioner. Will this do the job?
Thanks!

First I want to say thank you to all my friends who supported me when they heard I had gotten banned from the site. Your friendship and loyalty means a lot to me. I love this board and I love you guys (you too Steph) but Dean is right. I threw dirt on his carpet and I got kicked out of the house! I would do the same had it been my house. At this point I would ask one thing of my remaining friends here on the DEAN FORUM. Please leave me out of it from now on. Don't defend me. All that does is keep the negativity alive. It has to end now. Thanks, I'm sorry and good bye.

Well today I unloaded all of my bolt on Neck Deans. With how much I spent on them I actually came away with more of a trade in than I had anticipated. What did I buy you all may ask? Well I bought the BOSS GT-6 effects processor, or I should say traded as I paid $360 for the 3 guitars (pawn shop prizes) and I cleaned the dust of them as I havent touched them in ages and bucked up $25 more and picked up a $450 effect unit. I said they paid more than I spent! Anyway my fingers are sore and I'm satisfied

I'm getting ready to buy a Digitech GNX3 so I need to sell my pedals to help pay for it. I have a Boss DD-6(Digital Delay) that I got new from Dave @B&T a few months ago,a Boss CH-1(Super Chorus),Johnson Flange,Johnson Distortion & EQ and a Johnson Chromatic tuner. I have the instructions for all the pedals except the chorus. The Johnson pedals are made by Boss. All are in great working condition as I bought all of these new. I also have a Johnson pedalboard that comes with a Duraguard carrying case with shoulder strap and large accessory pocket, the pedalboard AC adaptor, attachment cables to power 6 pedals that would use a 9 volt battery, plenty of patch cables and velcro for using to attach the pedals to the board. I'm entertaining offers on any of these individualy or as a package before going the eBay route. Pictures are available.

Will someone buy this guitar and destroy it, please?!?
I was hoping we had seen that last of this thing....

Coil tap... can someone give me the bottom line on this
Hi all,
I'm looking to buy a good first electric. Some people have advised me to get a guitar with both single coils and a humbucker so I can get the largest range of sounds on a first guitar. Then when I get a better idea of what kind of sound I prefer I can upgrade to a more specific type of guitar or another (strat, les paul-type, etc).
For this reason I've had my eyes on the Avalanche models, until recently when I found out about the coil tapping features on most of the Evos, which are more attractive to me.
So my question to anyone out there who's had any experience with the coil tapping feature in the Evos or any other model... how good is it really?
It sounds like it would make the perfect combination guitar but based on another post on this forum it looks like it's getting mixed reviews (don't mean to repeat a previous post but that one seemed to meander on and off the subject)
Any advice would be greatly apreciated!!
Thanks a lot.

ZAKK WYLDE Weighs In On ROLLING STONE's 'Top Guitarists'List
got this from the http://www.hardrockin80s.com website
OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist Zakk Wylde recently spoke to Sleaze Grinder about Rolling Stone magazine's much-criticized list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. http://www.rollingstone.com/features/coverstory/featuregen.asp?pid=1917
"Put it this way," Wylde began. "When Eddie Van Halen is number 70 and Randy Rhoads is number 85, I mean, bottom line is I have to play Randy Rhoads' s#%t every night. I idolize Randy Rhoads. I still got posters of Randy Rhoads in my garage right now, in my weight room. I carry them on the bus. I love Randy Rhoads to death man, so I mean, the whole thing is just like, I've got to play Randy's s#%t every night. Last time I checked, Joan Jett can't play frippin 'Mr. Crowley', you know what I'm saying?
"You've got to laugh at the thing," Wylde continued. "I mean, Joe Satriani isn't in there. Steve Vai isn't in there. Yngwie Malmsteen isn't in that frippin list. Slash isn't in there. They are some of the sickest guitar players that have ever walked this planet. I mean, I'm a guitar player. Do you know how good frippin Yngwie is? It's beyond frippin sick. The fact that Yngwie isn't in it is just frippin mind-boggling to me. People can say what they want about Yngwie, but it's just like naming the 10 greatest singers of all time and not putting Pavarotti in it, you know what I'm saying? Yngwie is a virtuoso.
"Obviously Jimi Hendrix is going to be the patron son of guitar, like Babe Ruth. No matter who hits more home runs than The Babe, The Babe is going to be, you know, The Babe. But the thing is, Jimi Hendrix couldn't play 'Spanish Fly' or 'Eruption'. Technically. I'm telling you. Flat out. Just couldn't do it. Jimi got a bunch of gear that nobody ever had before, you know what I am saying? So, he was able to do it before anyone else, and I understand that, but Eddie brought it to a whole other level technically.
"As far as I'm concerned, Eddie Van Halen should be number one. And then Randy Rhoads would have to be in the top three or top five. He'd have to be."
NAMM and guitar availability question
NAMM is just days away and there will be new guitars unveiled and there will be much rejoicing.......YEAH
I was wondering if the new guitars will already be in production with models available? Or is the expo more of a show off some ideas, and see if they grab enough attention to warrent a production run kind of thing?
Motorcycles
by Lon on Mon Jan 12, 2004 7:33 pm
Hey guys, looking for a little advice here. I realize there are as many motorcycles as guitars, and everyone has preferences. I'm looking to get a used small to medium sized bike this spring, and am looking for some recommendations. By small to medium I mean 250-600 cc. Due to $$ constraints it must be an older bike as well. I don't want a crotch rocket, I want something to sit up on, like the Kawasaki 440 Ltd. Something along those lines. Any ideas? Thanks.
Well, for my last parting gift I've bought...

Sprinter, a favor?
by Dischord on Mon Jan 12, 2004 10:31 pm
Ask Dave to check his PM's OR get him to send me his addy again or something and the price difference in the shipping to Korea so I can send him the dough...or if he DID send it already (which I highly doubt) I need to know because it hasn't arrived which is why I doubt it. Thanks man, stay cool, stay heavy, keep rocking on those G&L's.
Sorry everyone, I'm not who I've said I am
I just wanted to come clean before DOAIII. My real name is Elmer J. Fudd, millionaire. I own a mansion and a yacht, but no Dean guitars. Heck, I can't even spell gitar. All those pics were photoshopped including the one on the old forum where Ponch asked "How cool would it be to see HardTails and USA eVos side by side" and with in minutes I created one with two HardTails and two eVo Millenniums side by side. Also, I've never ridden a motorcycle. Heck, I can't even spell motercicle. The visit I paid Dave at B&T on the way to MidAmerica? All part of an elaborate hoax to make my life seem more interesting than it really is. What about Boris the Wonderdog you ask? Nope, figment of my imagination. I can't even spell dawg. On top of all that, I was never a CPA. I wouldn't be able to consolidate finacial statements or account for less than 50% owned subsidiaries if my life depended on it. Fund accounting? Forget about it. Forms 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120 and 1120S? Never heard of them. LIFO, FIFO, COGS, COGAS, ROI, ROE, ROA, EOQ, ACRS, MACRS, TVM, PV, FV, NPV, Black-Scholes? Alphabet soup. I can't even spell CP eh.
In short, I just wanted to apologize to all for not being who I think I am and promise to be someone else from now on.

Recomend a good neck pickup over the Dean Zebra?
Hi guys! I have the Rio Grande BBQ in my Evo deluxe with the stock Dean Zebra in the neck. Does anyone think I would gain much by replacing the neck humbucker? It gets little use as is other than a few of our songs so I am considering just leaving it.
I was thinking of the Duncan 59, Dimarzio Air Zone, or Rio Grande Texas.
Any Evo guys out there like to comment?
Thanks a million!

I had the opportunity to plug my Anniversary Caddy into a primo amp last night... A Bad Cat! It was a Black Cat 30 watt head/cab. Sweet but pricey!
Has anyone ever tried a Bad Cat out?
Dean Time Capsule Z
by jimlp on Tue Jan 13, 2004 3:32 pm
Hi guys. I may have to sell my TC Z, it is only a month old. I am a photographer and dropped a big money camera and I may have to sell the Z to buy another. It is #44/#50 in Brazilia Burst and has hardly been played. I do not know if this type of thing (SPAM) is against forum rules as I would not intentionally go against the forum grain. I would rather have one of you guys buy it because you appreciate what it is. I hope to have pics soon. Price will be reasonable.
Oooops! That's gonna leave a mark!

DETROIT (AP) - Ted Nugent was injured on the Texas set of his reality show when a chain saw cut through his leg.
The outspoken rocker and outdoors enthusiast, who is the star of the VH1 series, "Surviving Nugent: The Ted Commandments," required 40 stitches to close the gash in his leg on Sunday, Michelle Clark, a spokeswoman for the cable music channel, said Tuesday.
Nugent didn't miss any time on the series, which is taping through Sunday and is scheduled to air in April. The 55-year-old rocker is wearing a brace on his leg.
The original installment of "Surviving Nugent" aired as a two-hour special in October.
In that version, contestants were shot with paintballs, made to sleep in a barn, construct their own outhouse and skin a Russian boar - all in an effort to win $25,000 and prizes. Nugent challenged the contestants to live off the land in his rural compound near Jackson, about 70 miles west of Detroit.
In the latest version, which will air as a series, the Motor City Madman again will look to transform a group of unsuspecting city slickers into rough outdoorsmen.
To provide a fresh spin and new challenges, the location has been shifted from the woods of Michigan to Nugent's sprawling, multi-acred compound located just outside of Waco, Texas.
Nugent's family - son Rocco and wife Shemane along with ranch hands Big Jim and Big John - will figure prominently in the series.
The top prize this time around is $100,000.
Ok I just picked it up...and indeed apart from teh added USA Kahler it is in very good shape, it has a small crack in teh headstock but nothing serious..virtually no belt buckle rash and a clean front and neck!
The Kahler routing is much less severe than a Floyd routing, only a slight piece of wood is taklen from the upper side of teh body about 5 x 6 cm and 1 cm deep...
The ML has a Duncan Invader in the bridge but I got the original DiMarzio with the guitar plus the case is in incredible condition after 24 years!
All the original paperswork of the kahler was included too...
Still my critizism on vintage DEANs remains the tops are much inferior to TC DEANs...the neck is a fat C profile like many 1980 DEANs, my E'lite has it too!
Sound off on your top guitarists
by jim6 on Tue Jan 13, 2004 3:41 pm
Given the responses in the thread on Zakk Wylde and the Rolling Stone list of top guitarists, I thought we should cook up a list.
I'm thinking that there will be a wide variety of opinion within this group. Therefore, we should start small and try to determine the Top Five. List them in order of preference.
I'd suggest basing your five picks on:
Talent
Innovation
Influence
In your post, don't editorialize or comment on someone else's posts. Just list your five choices.
If you have a change of heart after posting, modify your previous post. Don't add a new one. It'll be easier to get everyone's thoughts if they're just listed without a lot of additional information.
Let the posting begin......
I returned from my trip to the sunny south today to find more than my fair share of PM's in my inbox. ALL of them were words of support and thanks! So to all of you who offered your support - THANK YOU!
Believe it or not, I actually felt crappy about exposing the forum to all the crap, I know some of you didn't like reading the fights (but it appears most of you took great amusement in it!!). It was something that I felt needed to be done - too many good people were being white washed!!
Yo Hans (and anyone else)! Nuclear Assault question
On the import (to the US anyway) CD Assault and Battery, there is a song called Happy Days. Now I coulda sworn I read that it was the theme to the TV show Happy Days that NA did. Is it really the TV theme?
If so, anyone have an MP3 file they might want to send to a metal junkie?!?
Dean V-xl
by shawn on Tue Jan 13, 2004 10:20 pm
I recently bought a used V-xl. I love it i a big V fan. But i noticed that it has some flex in the neck. is this something common or did i get one somebody has hacked on. u can tell that the neck screws have been tweaked on. but the dealer said that they just tightened everything up sounded fishy to me. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem befor.
Thanx

Had my first ever formal bass lesson yesterday
by matthew on Wed Jan 14, 2004 6:40 am
Well, it's 9 odd months after getting my Edge 4, and I haven't been able to get a regular jam session with the guys from work for a few months now. We all have pretty full schedules and just can't seem to get a night/day where we're all free at the same time. I practice nearly every day at home, but I've been feeling like I'm hitting a wall and not making any progress. So, I took my butt to a music teacher.
I was fairly nervous because I had no idea what to expect, as well as being self concious of my shortcomings. The teacher had an Ibanez 6 string. It sounded darn good. He had it dialled in to a punchy funk kind of tone. Nevertheless, I reckon my Edge 4 with flatwounds held it's own in the tone department.
So what did we do? To start with, while I was waiting for my session I could hear he was teaching someone a groove from a Lenny Kravitz song (no idea what it was). When I got in I mentioned it so he showed me the groove. While I was playing it, he started to solo over the top. Man, my jaw dropped and I started to make a total mess of things. Two basses going together sounded so good I started to listen to what he was doing rather than concentrating on my own groove. Anyway, we moved on and worked on one of my favourite SRV songs - Lenny. I love how Tommy Shannon's simple bass lines perfectly complement SRV's playing in that song.
The half hour flew by, so he showed me a finger excersize and that was it. I'll definately be making this a weekly excursion. I had heaps of fun, and the teacher was so good, I'm addicted after one session! I can't imagine why I didn't do this sooner.
Can't wait to see all the new toys! Wish I was there....
Who will be attending? Can we count on any pics?

Eye dominance
by ragnut on Wed Jan 14, 2004 11:10 am
This has nothing to do with Deans, but so many people don't know this about themselves and love to find out about it when I show them that I thought I'd share it with you.
We all have a dominant eye. Which of our eyes is dominant can sometimes help us with certain skills. Here's how to find out which is your dominant eye. Bear with my explaination of this -- it's easier to do in person than written out.
Gently touch your right index finger together with your right thumb. Now do the same with your left hand. Bring the two paired fingers together so that you form an diamond-shaped aperture (hole) that is a few millimeters wide. Extend your arms out horizontally. Focus on an object at least 10 feet away, looking through the aperture with BOTH EYES at the object.
Staying focused on the object through the aperture, close one eye. If you still see the object through the aperture, the open eye is your dominant eye. If the object shifted to the side, the closed eye is your dominant eye. Confirm this by repeating the procedure and closing your other eye. Cool huh!
Even if you focus on something with both eyes open, this proves you have a dominant eye. Right handed baseball hitters and quarterbacks do better if they are left-eye dominant, as the head is turned to the left during play. Right handed hitters who are right eye dominant will often do better with an "open stance."
My guess is that if you're a right handed guitar player that is right eye dominant, you probably feel more comfortable playing with the neck a little more in front of you than way off to the left side. ( I knew I'd find some kind of tie-in to a guitar thread)
For Bill

Bill, I've always been straight with you and I believe you've been straight with me. I do not have you blocked, and I don't even know how! Even if I did I would not do that. You were square with me on the free amp thing and I appreciated it. That's all I wanted to say.
Operating System Software
Time for Dizz to upgrade from Win98. What is the recommeded upgrade (sorry Mark - not going to Mac no matter how many problems windows has ). Would it be better to get Win ME or Win XP? I think I remember hearing a lot of problems with the 2000 version. Anyone running either of these care to comment?
THIS FORUM AND A SELECT FEW HOLIER THAN THOU MEMBERS
I have endured 3 flame wars in the one year that I have been in this forum. I will even go as far as to say perhaps I was responsible for 1 of them, no I will admit I was the cause of one, the USA /DOA one. Since that time 2 people in this forum have been on a witch hunt to try and destroy my credibility, and for what ever reason a select few others who DO NOT know me, HAVE NEVER had dealings with me, HAVE NEVER even met me have chosen to jump on the band wagon.
I do not need to divulge every bit of my private life to clear my name from this witch hunt, but I certainly have a better understanding of the the McCarthyism era now. Just because my name appears no where on something doesn't mean I never owned it, nor does it mean I am not who I have said I am. Just because some pictures were found in a site where I served proves nothing, yet a select few choose to believe so, anyone who is familiar with the F-111 knows that they were a limited number of jets and dozens of pictures can be found of the same jet in many sites.
I offered up my Military record in full detail to the person who started this whole charade and he declined to accept it.
Then when that seemed to loose momentum he went on to something else (the car).
Not one shred of evidence has been shown to the contrary of what I have claimed and who I claimed I was, I have thrown enough out there to prove that I have credibility, but again the select few choose to ignore it, and some that I did deal with won't even speak up in my defense(and you all know who you are). If this were a case going to a Court of Law it would be laughed out of Court.
Now it has taken a bizzarre twist and gone outside the Forum to an organization who is not involved or affiliated with DEAN guitars or the DEAN forum, and through an email sent with blind address is now interfering, in matters that have nothing to do with them or the forum.
To the person or person's responsible this is my PRIVATE life you are screwing with and I don't think any of you would like it one damn bit if it was the other way around.
So you all have your little laughs and point the finger all you want but your actions surely show what your character as a human being is made up of.
The only two people that I trusted enough to tell all to, know and have accepted the evidence I have shown them and have apologized, and they are both very respected Forum members. To the rest of you who remained neutral I commend you, and to those who chose to slander me, you were never DEAN brethern anyways, so I certainly don't need you now.
As of last week I requested my name be removed from the member list of the DOA and I make that request again. I will be sending a letter to both Dean and Elliott in regards to the interference of Forum member/members with my outside afilliations, in another area. I have the proof to back this statement up and I will provide it to Dean and Elliott should I be asked to.
Hopefully this will put a rest to all the focus on me, which tookaway from the real importance of why this Forum is here in the first place which is to promote a great guitar company and the people who make this Forum possible in the first place, Dean Guitars.
Sincerely,
Bill Christy

Megadeth back?
by Q on Wed Jan 14, 2004 7:10 pm
For the metal fans here, here is the latest from Dave Mustaine @ the Megadeth website!
New Year updates
Well, it's been a while. And there has been a lot that has happened since last year.
First off, there is a huge campaign ahead for 2004 and rather than confirm things that are verbal until they materialize, I wanted to wait until the first stage of this project had started and I had something to report that was completed.
I have been in the studio since January 5th, 2004, remixing "Peace Sells, But Who's Buying," as part of a re-release campaign that Capitol Records is planning for this year. In two weeks, once the studio is finished with overdubs for what I am currently working on, I will start on "So Far, So Good, So What."
"Peace Sells" was finished last Friday, January 10th, 2004, and is now being shipped off for Mastering. This is the first of the entire Megadeth catalogue to be remixed for Capitol Records. The previous 5.1 surround sound re-release was not remixed, although I wanted it done prior to the record being put into 5.1 format. Unfortunately, DTS, the company that financed the project had limited funds and could not afford a remix, as well as mixing the record into 5.1 surround sound.
Other Releases
Capitol also intends on re-releasing the MD.45 record featuring Lee Ving on vocals from the punk rock band Fear.
I am also working on other material that everyone seems to know about, so I will confirm this:
1) Yes, I am in the studio working on Megadeth material old and new.
2) Yes, I did contact previous Megadeth band members Marty Friedman, Nick Menza, and David Ellefson about making a new record.
3) I was unable to accommodate Friedman and Ellefson, and sadly Nick, who was the most gracious and ready to rock, will not be playing on this new record I am doing.
4) Any talk of a reunion is wishful thinking.
There was a book deal offered to me by Sanctuary three years ago to put all of my lyrics from Megadeth into a book and to describe them. I completed that last year and submitted it to Sanctuary this year for editing and eventual release.
New Megadeth Record
I started last year in October working on a new record and was unsure if it was going to be a Megadeth record or the first record of my career-post Megadeth.
But there was too much good music that was written during the Megadeth era that was left incomplete and unreleased that I had written and I decided to assemble that music first. It is frikkin' heavy and most people that have been around are surprised it was never released.
Regardless of being unable to come to an agreement with the RIP line-up, I am excited to say that Chris Poland is in the studio with me in Arizona, working on this new record. Vinnie Colaiuta and Jimmy Sloas played drums and bass with me on this record and I should be done somewhere around the end of March. Don't worry, they rip!
I have heard the rumors and I don't pay them any mind; I know that the people who are saying they are "insiders" or have "inside info" are talking out their asses, and that some of them have been right by way of "a guess," but that's it. If these people say they are friends of mine and are disclosing private information about me, then I can tell you they are not considered a friend by me.
Appearances
I will be at NAMM Saturday, January 17th, with my new ESP DV8s and LTD DV8Rs and I expect I will meet some of you there.
Some kind of #$%@
I am aware of the Metallica movie; I noticed how much footage they used and to whom it benefited, too. "This is about relationships," huh? Yeah, right.
Pillar
I did go to Knoxville, Tennessee, to write a song and play with the band Pillar. Not because of their faith, but because they are a good band. But since this is a Megadeth site and that is not related to anything Megadeth, you can look for info on my trip at the Pillar site or on DaveMustaine.com.
Life Changes
Yes, my life has changed and what was once just saying what my religious beliefs were with my lips, I now have acknowledged in my heart. Again, this will be discussed at my personal site. My personal beliefs are not going to be pushed on anyone and if you don't like it, go somewhere else.
Arm Injury
My arm got injured when I fell asleep on it January 7th, 2002, not from the false reports that state anything to the contrary, and I was told that I would not gain full use of my arm ever again; that I would be lucky if I even got 80%.
Well, through a lot of physical therapy, and a lot of the prayer that everyone seems to be mocking me for, I am completely healed and playing better than before I got hurt, because I had to relearn to play.

Mustaine sez,
Goodbye Droogies!
While I was in Phoenix, I went into a guitar center. Now, I'm assuming this is a big chain as I have seen a few before but this is the first time I have been in one. I have to say - I was very impressed with the selection of guitars and amps they carried. There were also a LOT of people in there shopping, including a few juniors whose parents were obviously going to by the kids some gear.
Now Mrs. Diz asks me - "how come they don't have any Deans?". I explain that Dean does not allow big chain stores to carry thier gear and they only market through your Mom and Pop type of stores. She says to me "well that's wierd, you'd think if they wanted to sell lots, they would be in a store like this".
I think she has a point. The more I looked at all the people in that store, the more I looked at the parents buying stuff for their kids, the more I thought - these guys probably never even heard of Dean - the more I thought maybe they should be in stores like Guitar Center.
What do you guys think - Should Dean sell in big chain stores in an effort to get more exposure in the market place?
Hi - New Dean Owner!!!

Hi All -
I just purchased my first Dean guitar and thought I'd join the forum as well. I'm a regular member over at the Seymour Duncan Forum.
I purchased a new Hardtail in flame Cherry - looks to be Cherry Sunburst, but may be the Vintage - the dealer wasn't sure . It will arrive on Friday. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and hopefully become a contributing member.
Cheers!
cool spalted wood for a V
how cool would this look on a V ? (please excuse the horrible MS Paint I have to use at work)
From Hardradio.com:
TANKARD will release their new album, Beast Of Bourbon on March 22nd. The band are currently working in Stage One Studios with sound engineer Andy Claasen to complete work on the release. Cover art for Beast Of Bourbon comes from Sebastian KrŸger. As previously reported, tracks set to appear on the new album include: 'Fistful Of Love', 'Under Friendly Fire', 'Genetic Overkill' and 'Die With A Beer In Your Hand'.
music industry goes digital!!!!
wow couldn't believe it ! Gibson has come out with a digital guitar that they will be releasing in the first quarter of 2004. I can't post the article right now, but you can find it in the business section of the times-union newspaper from Jacksonville, Fla. The cost is going to be between $1,000.00-$1,500.00. Just thought you all would like to know .
Rush in Rio
by Somerled on Thu Jan 15, 2004 10:36 am
picked this up yesterday. Putting all the crap that happened with their guitarist on new years, this is an awesome show. 60,000 fans in rio going nuts, and an incredible performance from the band. Now, once he gets his legal problems behind him, Dean needs to get some Deans in the hands of Lifeson. He obviously doesn't have an exclusive deal with prs, since he changes guitars about 15 times during the show, playing 4 different prs, a tele, 2 les pauls, a gibson sg, and a gibson 335. (found it kind of odd that for a prs endorsed player, he only had one new prs. the rest were older, and the one he played the most was a pre 95)
At this time we are going to need all members to log off of this site...
Hardtail37 will be the first to receive all incoming pics from todays Namm show..
Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated...
Thank you...
I have a new idea for an acoustic Dean should consider
Hey guys. I had trouble with my old account so I had to start over again and haven't been back here in a while.
The unveiling of the cheaper version of the Hardtail looks really sweet, but it got me thinking.
I think Dean should put out an acoustic-electric jumbo. Why? Many people like myself love jumbo acoustic guitars, I played a Gibson J-150 at a Guitar Center and I was in heaven (sounded better than the J-200 in the store and it was cheaper).
Dean makes phenomenal guitars. Todd from Tantric uses the Dean Exotica (I think the RSE). I know I want to purchase a Dean acoustic instead of an Alvarez or Takamine (two other brands that provide the "more bang for the buck" ideaology), but Dean doesn't have any offerings out.
To me, since there aren't a lot of offerings for a jumbo style acoustic out there, Dean would be able to find quite a market for them.
All of this should be taken with a grain of salt, as I am just a 19 year old kid, but I know tone and I know guitars and I've been researching things for long enough to try and make a serious point.
Either way, you'll still see a Dean Hardtail in my collection in the future, but if plenty of people would go for it, why not try it?
It's good to visit the forums again!

So here I am......

Trying real hard to get out of the guitar playing biz, and what do I see on ebay? Jay is selling his Dean 335 copy! I turn a blind eye. At lunch I'm out picking up some equipment for my job, and there's a pawn shop next door that I used to frequent but haven't in ages. Like an idiot I stop in and what do I see? A shiny black Dean MLX for $169. It's a damn conspiracy is what it is! I had to shield my eyes and run out of the store. I've already committed to Tom to sell my strat and amp, so if I decide I must continue playing then I'm gonna have to buy more gear. Yeah I'm a putz.

Gang,
The "Upload Pictures" Button will be moved to the bottom of every page from now on. Just FYI in case you were wondering where it went!
Also, the NEW tiki will be posted shortly so stay tuned!
Hey everyone, I just purchased the Exotic Dao guitar and was wondering if anyone had any info on the properties and characteristics of Dao wood. I know that it is in the Koa wood family but is not from Hawaii. I was a bit wary to buy a guitar that uses the same wood for the back, sides, AND soundboard, that usually is a poor combination in most guitar building. I was proved wrong in the great sound that it does have, except for one thing, there's just no guts in the bass at all. Everything from the A string up sounds awesome, but the E just doesn't get the soundboard vibrating, perhaps the Dao is too stiff or too thick to vibrate such big soundwaves like flimsy woods. Anyways, if anyone has any knowledge on Dao let me know. Thanks

SOMEONE HAS GONE TOO FAR, HAS TO STOP NOW!
I have watched all this garbage go back and forth for a while now....ever since I came back actually. And I kept kewl about it all until NOW.
I personally talked to the Blues Foundation today, and MUCH to my surprise, one of you have gone WAY too friggin far. You have involved yourself in Bills personal life, and you have also involved Elliott's life too...............ARE YOU STUPID? ARE YOU INSANE? Are you looking to close this forum down? You are WELL on your way if what I heard is true. Elliott can NOT allow this to go on.
I want to know WHO sent an email the the Blues Foundation slandering Bills name? Bill is an outstanding member and personal friend of MANY great guitarists who belong to that Foundation, and you slander him there? I WOULD PERSONALLY HUNT YOU DOWN AND BEAT YOUR BRAINS OUT IF YOU INTERFERED IN MY PERSONAL LIFE AND CAUSED POSSIBLE PROBLEMS ELSEWHERE. However, you also have involved yourself in his life as a guitarist, and that is unforgivable................I don't care WHAT was discussed on this forum. I talked to them personally. They told me that they were getting in touch with Armadillo to find out what the
H E L L is going on in this forum. Elliot owns Armadillo, right? Armadillo is a supporter of the Blues Foundation (this is what I was told, so don't quote me), and YOU (whoever you are) have just opened a HUGE can of worms if this is true.
I, for one, still like this forum, but I will not stand for ANYONE causing problems in other members personal and professional lives...........period. I am going to Dean Z. and Elliott about this before this thing gets REAL messy. I think whomever did this should be
B A N N E D forever.
I hope it can be resolved before this forum is closed down by Dean themselves. You can't blame them if they do............someone has been slandered in a way that can cost him a lot of money, and his reputation ruined in the Blues community, and God knows where else. Did you know that everything you post is NEVER deleted on the Internet? You can go to several different search engines and see EVERYTHING. I went to "Ask Geeves" and saw an incredible amount of stuff I don't want ANYONE to read that I posted in a Flame war last year. How about YOU?
I am not defending anyone here as far as a flame war goes......I know who is right and who is wrong, and that's enough for me. But I AM defending ALL OF US HERE from any more of what happened this week. I would hate to think what I will do if this person does that to me.....I am still a red-neck at heart, and you all know what that means. I want to hear from ALL of you on this subject.......you are all at risk......and the simplest, most stupid slander can ruin you if placed in the right hands. Thanks, RICCO

Protocal for leaving
by Sinker on Thu Jan 15, 2004 8:39 pm
I've been involved in several varied on-line forums. From fishing to motorcycles to music. It seems to me, when you've had 'all you can stands and you can't stands no more' the best way to leave is to just leave. Make a clean break. Don't come lurking around to see if you're being talked about. Don't announce that you're leaving to see if people beg you to stay. Just leave.
Of course, that's just my opinon. I could be wrong.

A dean MLX with a Bill lawrence L500XL bridge pickup. 300 watt Randall Cyclone head, and the behringer cab. For the anti cyclone people, I can get a very heavy sound from it, you just gotta play around with the EQ for awhile.

Was reading a guitar mag and... (metalheads check this out)
I was quite shocked!!! Dave Grohl is releasing a METAL album...normally I would laugh this one off, but this one has something going for it that most metal bands don't...like King Diamond singing one track, or Lemmy doing vocals and bass for another, or the singer of Venom doing one...my goodness...11 songs with 11 different singers, all metal, and Dave on drums...this could be VERY interesting...I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for this one. I think that we metalheads may just enjoy this one!
OK - I started this, hopefully I can finish it too! It's being discussed in PM's, but lets put it out here for all to see.
PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND to anything Bill has to say anymore - no matter how tempting, no matter how frustrating, no matter how hard. NO ONE is gonna have a tougher time with that request that yours truly - so if I can do it - so can everyone else.

WTF! Never buy a guitar made on Monday because the workers are still hungover/drunk from the weekend! I got this one from the 2004 NAMM site.
i have been doing some songwriting
well folks, i have been doing some songwriting, and i would like to show you my latest work, but first, i must tell you my inspiration for this song, see i am pretty open minded towards music, and when i heard about emo, and its closest still communicationg to it relative, screamo, i thought, well gues i oughta give this a try, well, i went to a concert with some of my friends, i thought it was gonna be metal, so i wore my iron maiden shirt, well i was sadley mistaken, i looked like a ho in a monastary..... well, the first band was setting up, i have a question? why can't people buy a better guitar thean a 150.00 schlepaphone special yet can afford a 1,500.00 digital 200 watt head and cab? anywho... they started to play and it got packed, i tell you what.... it was about 2 pairs of handcuffs away from an orgy, ....... any who.... they sucked, bad, i mean, baaaaaaaad.... and what is it with pubescent teens and their insaciable urge to jump UP and DOWN OVER andOVER.... yah... so during the 2nd set og a funny looking guy with pink/black/green/blue/brown/yellow/purple/red hair scream about totally random things which, no one could recognise as human speach, let alone understand, so... my friewnds and i made a long trek to the back of the mind numbingly small hall.... when i say small, think of your local best buy, now think of the beta max section, thats how small this hall was, so throughthis whole ordeal.. i got this idea for this song...... hop[e you like it.....

What pickups used in Hardtails?

I nominate myself for Moderator
by matthew on Fri Jan 16, 2004 6:40 pm
I love the Dean Community. Flame wars seem to be erupting more regularly. The web guys are hardly ever here, and often their intervention only seems to consist of changing the wording of thread titles. The time has come for something to be done.
Why me? Well, for a start I'm willing to take the flack that moderators inevitably get if it means I can contribute something back to this place. The several flame wars haven't scared me off. While I have posted my thoughts in some of those horrible threads, I haven't ever pulled out the flamethrower. I'm also level headed, and don't go on the power trips some people have when elevated to a position of authority. I'm also a DOA member and ardent DeanAholic.
So, can we please have a mature discussion about:-
a) Should we have a moderator?
b) If so, who?

Screw Rolling Stone vote for top guitarist at Guitar Player!
by Mike9 on Fri Jan 16, 2004 9:17 pm
After hearing the clamor from guitarists world wide over the lame a$$ Rolling Stone 100 greatest list Guitar Player magazine is taking a stand. They are calling upon all true believers to right this particular wrong by participating in a reader's poll that explicitly spotlights the opinions of actual players who love and respect the history of the guitar. All you have to do is this:
1 - write down your ten favorite guitarists of all time.
2 - choose one player to compete for "best young gun" must be between 13 & 25 yrs. old.
3 - choose one player to compete for "most ferocious female guitarist".
4 - choose one player to compete for "living legend" and old-cchool guitar god who is still breathing and (hopefully) still performing.
5 - choose one player to compete for "icon" a transcendent player who has passed away.
Put your picks into an e-mail message and send the votes to guitplyr@musicplayer.com Please write "Reader's Poll" in your subject line.
They will publish the results in the March 2004 issue - get your votes in soon!!
Lets show 'em what real guitar players look like
I recently have spent a few weekends jamming with three of my other buddies and it was totally awesome. All of us have been playing for over 20 years and been in bands some big and some small. Anyway I was able to compare my set up to three other very quality rigs. On hand have been a Bogner Exctasy, Bogner Shiva, Peavy 5150 combo, and Mesa Boogie Quad Preamp/2:ninety power amp. We all agreed that my little Crate Vintage Club 50 sounded awesome plugged straight in, it cut through and had that old Scott Ian tone for days!!! The Bogner was awesome, but hard to keep the volume down on. I took along my 1980 USA Dean V, and a couple of BC Rich USA guitars and played a friends French made Vigier guitar. It was incredible. Played great and sounded great. Graphite reinforced neck was nifty too!
In all we had a great time, three of us could play drums, and all played bass a little while myself and a another shared vocals. We destroyed such tunes as For Whom the Bell Tolls, Paranoid, helter Skelter, UFO's Rock bottom, Restless and wild, shout at the devil , holy diver, the trooper, aint tralkin bout love, and on and on......
What a blast!

FIRST REPORT FROM NAMM SHOW !!!!
We arrived today at 10:20 and less than an hour later, we were at the show. It's bigger and better that ever and I got quite a few pics today. I think the internet connection is working and I will post some pics tonight. I got a shot of Joe Walsh, Bob Mothersbaugh, Rick Springfield. And I found Mark Tremonti in the Dean booth talking to Michael Angelo Batio. Michael wowed the crowd and earned Dean Guitars a noise citation from the Namm Patrol !!! There are lots of things to see and people to see tomorrow. We are off for dinner and drinks with Dean Z and a few others. I will check it later tonight. The weather is beautiful, wish you were here!

Hardtail Components - Questions ??
by Jeff_H on Sat Jan 17, 2004 2:55 pm
So far I am in love with my Hardtail. So solid and well built/crafted. I do have some questions that I was hoping some of you could answer since I'm a tone/component FREAK!
What material is the nut - bone?
What type of pots/capicators? (the gounds are soldered over the name)
What is the radius of the fretboard? Is it compound?
I can't find my radius guides as my wife has cleaned up the shop and can't remember where she put them.
My fingerboard is a lighter color than I've seen on other Hardtails that I've checked out. Any possibility that it's rosewood instead of ebony?
Is 9.9 lbs heavy for a Hardtail, or about average?
Thanks in advance for your help and answers, and for making me feel welcome as a newbie on the forum.

Little Clip with the New Hardtail
by Jeff_H on Sun Jan 18, 2004 3:43 pm
All guitar parts are the JB in the bridge position. Quick and dirty one take on the guitar parts. I'm too into playing the new guitar to spend a lot of production time, so as a result the timing is a little off.
The guitar is a dream to play, smooth smooth action and feel.. I've been playing 25 1/2" scale length for so long now that the shorter scale length is taking a little getting used to, as are the jumbo frets.
Overall I like the tone of the JB, but it may end up being a little too hot for me all things considered. I can see why Seymour wound this the way he did for Mr. Beck, if you have a single channel Marshall that needs to be pushed.....this would be the ticket. With more modern high gain amps I like a little more clarity. The JB is a tad mid heavy, especially in this heavy new guitar of mine. Ineed to spend some more time with it to really decide if it will work for me in this guitar.
Specs below for reference.
Guitar - Dean Hardtail - Mahogany Body 1 5/8" Maple Cap. 9 1/2 lbs approx. JB/PG Combo
Amp - JCM 800 2205 (4212 combo)
Effects - A little delay and some track compression.
Drums and bass are midi tracks I downloaded.
Enjoy!

Who is this guitarist from NAMM 2004?
by BLOYD on Sun Jan 18, 2004 10:42 pm
Ok, can any of you guitar guru's tell me who this guy is?
Here is a hint: He had something to do with Randy Rhoads...
President Dave's NAMM pics !!! Here they are !!!
I saw where Lon complained about the celebs and girls pics, so I am only posting guitar pics tonight. I have several pics of celebs, but I will wait on those. These guitars can't wait !!! I went to the show early on Saturday and got shots while there were no people in the way.
Hardtails, Hardtails, Hardtails !!! They were everywhere !!! I really love these guitars and it's just a matter of time until they take their rightful place at the top of the hill. I predict this guitar will be the one to make Dean the guitar of choice for all the top players.
Some of the finest wood around is finding it's way on to the top of the Dean Hardtails. These are being called Exotics and they are spectacular
There were tons of spalted maple guitars, and the Hardtails look great with this wood.
My son, Nathan, love the Dean Hardtails and he spent plenty of time playing this one with a natural finish.
More tommorrow night !!!
Hardtail Select !!! This is the one you've been waiting for !!!
I headed straight for the new Korean Hardtail and I couldn't find them at first. They are that good. Pat, Dean guitar tech extraordinaire took one of these beauty's to Elliott and asked him to check the finish. Elliott said it looked great. Pat died laughing and asked Elliott had any idea what he had just viewed. It was a Hardtail Select. I place a Select side by side with a Hardtail Collector's Edition. From a short distance, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Can you tell which is which?(hint: look at the inlays). This guitar is going to be a HUGE seller.
Here is a list of all my deans I will have pics when i get all the rolls developed (dont know which roll it is so itll come at random)

Dave's NAMM pics Part II - Hardtail prices & pointy axes
Here's the second installment of my NAMM pics that I took just for YOU !!! Some of these pics have already been posted, but with my superior journalistic skills, they will seem totally new. Yes, I am joking. Plus I got some pricing info today that you asked for.
The Korean Hardtail Series models include Standard and Select. The Standard is a painted guitar and the Select features a flame top. The Select has a retail list price of $999 and the Standard goes for $749. With the usual 35% off list that should be around 600-650. Dave at Bass and Treble can sure help you out there. There are 5 colors available. I am not sure what else is available aside from what is shown here. I called Dean Z and he was in line to be strip-searched at the airport, so he didn't have time to check the price list.
Also available now is the Pro Series. They are the satin finish mahogany-bodied USA guitars you have heard about. Sorry about the fuzzy pic. I didn't know it was blurry until I got home. These guitars carry a "player's price" of $1199.
These new Cadillacs were stunning. Looks like Randall's Caddy on the left.
The new Water V re-issue turned out great. This one is marked for Randall.
Don't tell anyone, but I stole the truss rod cover because I don't like Randall at all. I read where some of you questioned the size of the headstock. It's supposed to be the same size as the Series II 'stock, but I can't tell for sure. The binding makes it look different, but I guess we will have to wait for Randall to take a few measurements and let us know. Will someone please send Randall an email and tell him how to use a tape measure? That's the reflection of my DOA T-shirt and NAMM badge you see in the headstock.
Now for the point axes !!! Man, oh, man !!! These tops just keep getting better and better. Check out the V's. JohnL already posted a pic of them, but mine is way better !
Here's the spalted Z that you wanted to see. I don't know if I have ever seen a more amazing top. Dean Z told me that the black lines in the wood are where the wood had begun to decompose. He said they have to be very careful with the wood until it was ready for the clearcoat, as the black lines are very soft. I sure hope we find out who this one goes to. They should be required to join the DOA so we can all adore this guitar for years to come.
There were plenty of basses hanging on the wall, too. Check 'em out.
The Brian Bromberg model bass is finally in production. This is a slick looking bass and the tone is perfect.
Hey, how did this pic get in here ?!?
The Dean acoustics were showcased in an enclosed section of the booth and the lighting was much better than last year. The resonator models were so cool looking. CC DeVille headed straight for these guitars when he showed up.
Tomorrow night - famous people !!!
Concert ce 24 or Artist cse
by Spaniard on Mon Jan 19, 2004 10:04 pm
Hello, I am new to the acoustic/electric guitar and would like to learn to play but I am undecided about which Dean to buy. I am leaning towards the Concert ce 24 but I also like the Artist cse, which one would be the best to learn to play on by a beginner? What is the difference between a guitar like the Artist cse which has 23 frets and the Concert ce 24 which has 18 frets? As a beginner should I use steel strings or nylon? And what is the difference between getting a Cedar top or a Spruce top?
Im sure these questions seem elementary but I would appreciate any help. thank you!
Jackson-Charvel forum member. Below is a short review of the Dean guitars from a member of the Jackson forum who attended the Namm show. It's good to see what others think about our favorite brand of guitar "DEAN"
Dean Guitars:
Killer stuff again. Perfect fit, finish, and playability. These guys make great stuff and it's very consistent. The Hardtails are Heavy, the Cadillacs have small necks, the pointy guitars are flat out amazing. I taped another Michael Angelo performance. This time he played the double neck guitar. Damn. You'll just have to wait till I post the video.
any free places to host mp3's these days?
was using digitalsoundplanet.com but havent been able to upload stuff there recently (some server maintenance been going on for weeks.)
any other places out there to host mp3's?
Wow I forgot to post a report as requested.
Well the Big Day Out festival was a day of too much sun, too much booze and lotsa ROCK!!! This was really my lucky day as an old school rock fan. Some of these bands you haven't heard of, some you have, just bear with me.
As we were arriving we saw the Darkness finish their set. And guys, they just kicked AS$! I couldn't believe it. I hated them before, but I gotta say I'm a convert. They can really wail. Pity they were on at like 2PM.
While the Black Eyed Peas played (???) we went and checked out some of the cool rides (I liked the one where you paid your money and they gave you booze best), then we checked out Something for Kate (Aussie alt rock and it SUCKED), the Dandy Warhols (tight but too Dandy for me), Jet (More Aussie Rock and these guys were fantastic. They put on a killer show), Muse (Brooding Neo Classical Alt rock performed on Fenders - not my jar if pIss I'm afraid) and the Mighty Hoodoo Gurus (Aussie Rock Icons since the 80s) and they definitely put on the coolest show with the best sound. They played stuff off their first album and mixed in a few other favorites whilst playing some tasty Bigsby loaded LPs and a couple of nice Fenders - a white Strat and the singer Dave's road worn Tele). The Strokes came on next - and if I told you I hated them before then I was wrong. MAN I REALLY F***IN HATE THE STROKES NOW! They are the worst band in the world period. Saviors of Rock and Roll my arse. The lead singer acted like a wanker, his Mic was distorted for the whole show and none of the songs made sense. It was terrible. Headliners Metallica were OK but it was all Drums and Bass. The guitars sadly were lost in the mix. Kirk did play some wicked solos tho which was good to see.
I laughed, I hurled, I rocked out. And a great day was had by all.

selling one of my guitars?
by Somerled on Tue Jan 20, 2004 11:02 am
time for the difficult decisions. Convinced the wife last year to let me buy a new doa guitar every year. But now I'm looking at the new hardtail pro and selects, and I really really really want one. I can probably get the wife to agree to either a new hardtail select or a doa guitar without a problem. But if I wanted both, or if I wanted a US hardtail, I'd have to sell off one of my existing guitars. which leaves me kinda stuck here. I don't want to sell my doa caddy. I can't sell my icon ax (sentimental value, valentines day present from the wife, and my first dean). Not a high enough resale value on the avalanche one, so I'm down to having to sell off my tiger eye special select, which has been my main instrument for the last two years. (I tried to offer to sell our oldest's Schecter, but he didn't think trading his main guitar for a hardtail that I wouldn't let him play was a good idea...)

HELP! WHICH PICKUPS
by narcen on Tue Jan 20, 2004 2:30 pm
I'm trying to decide which pickups to have installed in the Heritage i'm ordering (Les Paul, much better quality than Gibson). I'm thinking DUNCAN DISTORTION in the bridge and a PEARLY GATES in the neck. Does anyone have this combo in a LP type ax? I had a HardTail with a JB in the bridge and a Pearly gates in the neck, and I wanted something a little hotter in the bridge. Any other recommendations would be appreciated. I'm not dead set on this combo. I play anything from blues to oldschool metal. Thanx Fellas!
My impatience damaged a vintage Dean...
I'm sure you guys have all seen and heard about guitars and temperature, but I got to witness what happens firsthand when you open a guitar case in a warm house that has been in the cold. I just received a vintage baby Z today in a rare color, and although I knew better, AND my wife was telling me NOT to do it, I opened the case soon after it arrived. It was in the 20's or 30's last night here in Texas, and the guitar was cold. The guitar immediately began checking all over the front of the body. Now there are lacquer cracks everywhere that were not there before. I quickly closed the case back up, but the damage is already done. Hopefully, at least the backside didn't check, but I won't know until tonight when I get home and look it over really well. I am so angry with myself I can't stand it, and all because I just HAD to see that guitar and didn't want to wait a few hours. Take this to heart...please wait and let your guitar acclimate to your indoor temps before opening the case. You don't want to learn this the hard way, trust me.

Question for you Amp Guys
by hsech on Wed Jan 21, 2004 12:08 am
Has anyone heard of a Mercury Class A tube amp? I just won one on eBay and I don't know anything about it. It looks fairly vintage. It is 50 watts, 2 channel. It's red tolex with a dark gray grill cloth and "Mercury" on the front. It has chicken head knobs. Two 6L6 power tubes and a single 12AX7 pre amp tube. I won it for $200. I just wonder if anyone knows anthing about Mercury amps. I can't find anything on the internet about them. Thanks in advance.
Prez Dave's NAMM pics - Famous People!
One of the coolest things about the NAMM show is all the big stars walking around like it's no big deal. Yeah, I will admit that I get a big kick out of meeting someone whose music has been a big part of my life. This year's NAMM show was no disappointment. We met a lot of cool people. Here's a few shots!
One of Dean Guitars finest endorsers is Brian Bromberg. He is hands down the best bassist I have ever heard. He is a jazz player and his specialty is the upright. Brian played several times over the weekend and it was a real treat. His tone and dexterity is nothing short of amazing.
The Bromberg Signature bass he is playing here is strung with picolo bass strings. Brian played this bass through a signal processor. Using a distorted sound, he played lead over a backup CD. He was better than most guitarists than I know.
Dave Mustaine was on hand at the ESP booth.
Are we not men? We are DEVO !!!
Jerry of the Misfits
Joe Walsh was in the PRS booth and was the first big name star I saw...about 5 minutes after I got to the show.
Michael Angelo Batio was featured artist at the Dean Booth again this year. He wowed the crowd with amazing style. His double-guitar technique is spectacular. He played a medley of guitar tunes that made people drop their jaws. If you are attending DOA III, you will get to see him in action.
Rick Springfield and Yours Truly !!!
Here is Dean Guitar's Tony Purnell standing next to a working 36-speaker cab. It weighs in at at whopping 900 lbs. The head has 2 SVT's built into one box and you have to climb the ladder to turn it on. They cranked it up a few times and got a "sound violation" citation from the NAMM police. This thing sounded like thunder.
DOA member JohnL came to the show again this year. We ran into my old pal Seymour Duncan and he was kind enough to stop for a photo op. The legendary Mr. Duncan is seen here pointing to who he believes is the cutest of the two. John came to dinner with all of us on Saturday night and ordered the biggest plate of spaghetti I had ever seen.
This man is......
A: Burl Ives
B: Fred Turner of BTO
C: A huge, drunk Leprechaun
Want a big laugh? right click on the pic and see what i named this pic!
Scott Iam of Anthrax
Kerry King of Slayer !!!
Mr. Vai was signing autographs and being the all-around nice guy that he is. There's a pic of him on page 44 of the March issue of Guitar World wearing the same shirt!
Flea was at the Gallien-Kreuger booth on Sunday morning. He was very quiet and reserved. You would have never known he was the same guy who played naked at Woodstock II. He never could figure out which camera to look at.
On Saturday morning I was hanging out at the booth and I noticed a familiar beard and haircut talking with Michael Batio. Mark Tremonti is one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet. He stopped mid-sentence numerous times to take pics with fans. He had a smile on his face the whole time and was very cool to hang with.
This moron grabbed a Dean Baby Z. and made a complete fool of himself. Cool guitar, but this big dope makes it look like a toy. I didn't bother to tell him that it wasn't plugged in!
At the 2003 NAMM show, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Stevie Wonder just before the show closed on Saturday. This year, CC DeVille showed up at the Dean Booth just before the show closed. He was an absolute riot! He is "on-stage" no matter where he goes!
That does it for my NAMM coverage. I want to thank Elliott, Dean Z and the whole gang at Dean Guitars for graciously including me in the festivities. They are the best bunch of guys around and I look forward to seeing them all again at DOA III.[/img]

Looks like it'll be even longer before I can get my '79 v.
*Balls, $hit, dammit.*
I just got a bunch of college fees and stuff, man. Setbacks are a biatch.
Hey! they have financial aid for less fortunate students, there should be something for suckers like me who need a dean.
I got a good mind to drop out again and rock out full time. lol.
Mark's Obession with the VG-88
What's this?
This "thread" started as a reply to Trapper on a basic question about the VG-88 in another thread. Before I realized it, it got extremely long (never would have guessed, huh?), so I thought it'd make more sense just to plop it into it's own thread.
Background For Those Fortunate Enough To Not Know What I've Done to My Deans
My rig is decidedly non standard.
I don't even use an amp, in the traditional sense.
My "live" rig consists of a Roland VG-88 and a pair of 15" JBL Eon G2's, (well and a Roland GR33 Midi converter, and a Mac, and Logic Platinum on the mac and a bunch of other crap), but the core of the thing is literally one box and pair of powered speakers.
The VG-88 is NOT a midi rig. While I do have Midi capability via another box, it's not the primary "tone" source. The VG88 is the primary source. And it's much different from the Midi stuff most people think about. More on that in a bit.
While it does use the same Hex (1 pickup per string) stuff that the midi "guitars" use, that's really the only thing it has in common.
Which brings us to the question that started all this, and it's response.
I now will turn the floor over to Trapper:
| Quote: |
| I'm assuming the box uses the fundamental frequency of the string and applies an algorithm to aproximate the sound of the appropriate guitar. If this is how it works, it would seem to me you could play a guitar made out of any material and it would sound the same as a guitar made out of any other material. I haven't used the VG-88, but I have used the RG-33 and it doesn't matter if I use a Brian Moore or a Parker Fly; steel drums sound like steel drums. |
Sort of. In the case of the GR-33 you're exactly correct, and I've got one of those as well for midi stuff. That's a pure pitch to midi data conversion, harmonics and whatnot are completely ignored. It's just fundimental to midi note value, and midi note on and off messages. Well there is velocity in there too, but that's just amplitude based translation.
You're right on the Piezo's. They ARE the saddle, and in my case EACH saddle. And as such, the raw stuff coming off them (which you can listen to BTW) is closer to an acoustic than anything else in tone.
So what is this thing anyway?
How the 88 works, and what makes it unique from the rest of the "amp" modelers out there is that only two pickups are supported are the Hex thing Roland makes, and Piezos. The brand on the Piezos is irrevelant, since all piezo saddles sound exactly alike on a test bench.
For that matter every roland GK2AH Hex Mag pickup sounds extremely alike as well. And that's the key of this thing.
It essentially "removes" guitar to guitar specific stuff, and focuses only on the stuff the player does (i.e. it will handle string noise, fret buzz, damped stuff that the midi stuff ignores).
Let's build a guitar
As a user, you then essentially have a set of strings, frets and that's about it to start with.
In the "basic modeling" mode (it's got a number of decidedly NON guitar modes a well) you start building the guitar.
You pick a body style (solidbody, hollowbody, accoustic, roundback (ovation), etc.
Then you can adjust basic parameters such as the thickness of the body, it's attack characteristics, tone, etc.
Next you add pickups, mics or both. In the pup category you can pick from a ton of varieties, all the classic stuff (Singles, Doubles, PAF's, Humbuckers, Lipsticks, Rickenbackers, whatever) or spec your own.
After you pick the pups, you place em where you want on the virtual body. In fact, you can put em anywhere you want, and at any angle for that matter. You can literally put a pup on the neck and angled to boot, with pup on the low E at the 5th fret, and the high E at the 12th, and any other weirdness in between.
Then you pick your wiring, in phase, out of phase, series, single, blah blah ad nausea.
You can pick strings to a certain extent (steel, nylon, Sitar, and a few others as well as neck scale, which is cool for getting the "strat scale attack".
Tune This!
Once you've done that stuff, the real fun begins.
Each string can actually generate two separate strings at once, and you can tune them literally however you want. For instance I've got several patches where I've inverted the octave orientation (the high E is the low E and vice versa), or have the 2nd string in the set be a perfect fifth up from the first (and it ever tracks correctly based on the key you play in).
This makes doing 12 string stuff, nashville tunings, dropped D, open keys and any other whacked tuning you want to work with a complete no brainer.
Every string can be panned independantly however you want, and if for some reason you want, you can add your existing mag pickups to the mix as well.
Effects & Amps
Then there's the effects section, which is just unreal. Flangers, phasers, delays choruses, hell, every stomp box ever made is in this thing.
The amp section is similar to what you'd find on a Line 6 or other modeler, except there's a lot more options. There's about 50 heads in the thing, and a couple dozen cabs. You can put the "mic" anywhere you want on the cab.
One of the things I really love about this thing that nobody else bothered to do was the flexibility of the signal chain. You can move anything anywhere. Put a delay before the amp. Put the compressor after the preamp and before the power amp, or after the mic for that matter.
You can split stuff up. Run your mag pickups through the amp but take the hex stuff after the amp and assign that to a different model (which allows for things like a simultaneous distorted electric with an accoustic 12 string), with different effects on each.
Then there's the "non guitar stuff".
You've got your basic syntho stuff, horn stuff, bowed strings stuff, and some others I don't even know what the hell to call.
This is all done via a whole boatload of Fast Fourier Transforms and a ungodly convolution process, the math of which I only barely understand in theory (my math ended with Differential Equations).
So what's it good for?
A lot of session guys live by this thing, since they can whip up any whacked thing the producer wants and only have to drag a guitar and the box to the studio.
In fact, I've yet to find anything I've wanted to do with it that I can't do. I don't own a bass anymore, but I can play one. Need an Ovation 12 string for a certain part? Mandolin? Friggin Ukulele? Zither? In short, if it's got strings, and you're willing to noodle a bit you can get there.
Ok, Mr. Smartipants, if it's so swell, how come everyone hasn't got one?
I think there's really a few reasons why it hasn't been as huge as say, the modeling amps have:
1) I gotta put what on my axe?
You have to have a hex pup or piezo rig to make it work, and a lot of people are scared to death of that. While they have a clip on thing that you don't have to blow any holes in your axe for, it's ugly as sin.
It's either that, or get a so called "Roland Ready" guitar (and there's a lot of them out there), but who the hell wants to give up their favorite axe to use it? I sure as hell didn't, which is why I went the route I have. I'm not alone either. A good number of the hard core "VG'ers" have done similar stuff to what I did.
2) Crappy representation in the market space.
Roland created a behemoth, and has absolutely no idea how to market it. They do zero training in the retail space on this thing, so while you'll see them in stores, you won't find a soul who works there who knows the first thing about it. For starters, you have to tune your hex rig in the setup section. It's a one time deal, but if you don't do it, it won't work well at all.
I've yet to be in a store where the bozo's have actually set one up. Futhermore, most stores "demo" them with the absolute POS "Roland Ready Strat". They covered the built in hex pup with plastic, and it's almost 3 times out of spec away from the strings. It's almost completely useless, yet, that's what people typically see it demo'ed with, if at all.
3) The "midi" factor.
Most people (completely mistakenly) assume this is just another midi converter. It isn't. Nor does it have any of the "oh god, I've heard they're impossible to play" characteristics of the midi stuff. While it's better, even today you have to be fairly clean technique wise to use a midi converter. The VG88 ISN'T a converter. You don't have to change your playing style one iota to use this thing. It'll track everything you do down to the subtlest string noise.
4) Absolutely HORRID factory presets.
I don't know how the Japanese can do such killer technology, and not have the foggiest clue about what to do with it. There's a "user bank" and a "factory bank".
I haven't used a factory preset since about the 2nd week after I started using it. They're that bad. As a result, most people who have actually played one of these things think they sound horrific, and unless you've played patches done by somebody who knows how to use one, a lot of the presets do sound like crap.
5) The Learning Curve.
It DOES require some learning. It took me a couple weeks with the manual and fiddling with the thing to be able to find my way around.
It's deep. And to really get the most out of it, you need to dig into it.
The worst thing you can do with this is put it on the floor. Almost everybody I know who has one either has it on a desk, or a stand, and the only time it's on the floor is at gigs.
I picked up an actually Roland demo stand when Mars went out of business. They should supply one with every unit sold.
6) The "too geeky and uncool" factor.
Let's face it. A lot of guitarists are scared to death of technology, and even more oddly, of what they think people will think if they step outside the "humbuckers into (insert amp brand here)" world.
This is so much the case, that there's a guitarist for very well known metal act. This guy's considered to be a "tone god".
Well, his "wall o marshalls" on stage are fake.
He's got a very well hidden VG88 going into some cleverly modified 412's that actually house a small full range PA. A second feed from the unit goes straight into the PA. He's got a custom cord built that looks just like a 1/4" jack.
Fortunately, the whole world isn't so close minded.
There's a few folks here who've heard mine (Steph, Dischord Don, etc) and Steph and Josh in particular really would love to have me just "accidentially leave it with them". Last time I was over at Steph's I did leave it overnight, and she pretty much stayed up all night playing it.
I've had similar results with non forum folks. I know I can count 4 people I know who have completely ditched their existing rigs and gone the 88 route after futzing around with mine, and I really don't get out much.
If you play in a wide variety cover band, this thing is the be all and end all.
They're not for everybody for a number of reasons, but everyone I know who's bought one and put any time in it at all would rather have their teeth yanked out with plyers than part with it.
A closing thought..
If any of you guys are interested, I could probably figure out a way of doing a hands on demo at DOAIII. I could ship one of my "equipped" Deans down to Clearwater and maybe do a little piece on it on saturday or something.
AC/DC: New Album To Be 'Harder' Than The Last - Jan. 21, 2004
AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson told Italy's Rock Hard magazine that the band will definitely come out with a new studio album in 2004 and that guitarist Angus Young has written "harder" riffs than the ones that appeared on their last studio CD, "Stiff Upper Lip". Johnson also said he will be handling lyrics this time around, which will mark the first time since 1988's "Blow Up Your Video" that Johnson will be penning lyrics for the band. He also said that a world tour will coincide with the release of the new album

Any of you fellas ever tried one of these? They are quite reasonably priced. I was looking at thier combos. I've never owned a tube amp and I need a little advice. I just need something powerful enough to jam with my friends. I play blues and older metal and I would like a tube combo that costs no more than $700. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanx. Oh yeah how 'bout a Marshall DSL 401 combo, anyone tried one? Thanx again!

Hey felles, will putting a tone pros bridge/tailpiece on my Les Paul change that "Les Paul Tone"? I'm clueless! Thanx.
Low string height to the body?
What do you guys think about low string height relative to the face of a guitar??
Do you guys think that low string height relative to the face of the body is essential for "correct" right hand feel? Maybe for many players who are more familiar with Fender or Ibanez bolt-on instruments this could be the case. I hear people say that many players never get comfortable on 335/Les Paul type instruments where the strings are far away from the face of the guitar top.
An example is the PRS bridge design.
as a kinda belated birthday present I got these skull knobs from my girlfriend..one set in chrome and one set in blackened chrome, courtesy of Dizzy who send me the link to the store that sells em!

Hey, glad to see Dean girl fans like myself. I really regretted not being able to make it to NAMM this winter. The Dean Booth is always one of my favorite stops. From the pics I've seen here and the ones friends took I'm regretting it even more. I thought you might like to see some of the girls from the last few shows.
http://pbase.com/jroy/deangirls
Jim
Now I know that I live in a cave because I don't know
that there's a show like the frackin' NAMM exist in this world.
So here is my questions;
1. Does NAMM show is on every year?
2. How do you get the tickets for that?
YOu see , after I saw you guys posing the pictures, I ran around and asked other people about this. Everyone gave me a different answers!. Foe example, one guy told me that they only give tickets to important people which I don't know what the hell is that mean. and other guy said I can get ticket at the ticketmaster. So someone help me please!
I've been thinking about this for a couple of weeks and I figured I'd go ahead and post it. I've been looking into acoustic guitars for a while now, and looking at Fender's acoustics, not to buy, but just thinking about the possibilities. I'm talking about their Stratacoustic and their Telecoustic. Now my question is, what's to prevent Dean Guitars from manufactureing a ML or a Caddy or a Z or anything else into an acoustic form? I think many electric guitar players would love to see some of these in acoustic versions. Just imagine for a second that you're up on stage or even at home with an acoustic ML strapped to you.
I just saw this guy playing....
and f*k he's amazing. he was playing the chords, solo and sh*t like that with the bass lines together and he also did the drum solo.
He's done all on the guitar at the same time!.
The most amazing part was when he played Zeppelin songs and you can hear Bonham on the frackin' guitar! Man, i gotta tell u when i watched all I think was "How the f*k can he do that?"
It blew me away.
New flame job on my Washburn body
Mike sent me his Washburn Dime 332 bolt on body and it arrived yesterday. Last night I masked off the guitar, drew my flames and cut out the design. I had the day off today so I went and got some paint and shot the guitar this afternoon. Its black with light purple flames with blue accents. I used an airbrush this time and its looks badass. Im gonna shoot some pics tonight and post them.
Site still cool as ever...

Links that Trapper & Mark wanted about WOOD & TONE
OK Trapper and Mark, since nobody slammed him so far in the other thread, I will use Ed Roman for SOME of my articles I have researched. You wanted research artiales, here some are! After all, I DID get a lot of my ideas from him, even though I had them done somewhere ELSE.................here are some links (from just ONE of my sources) about "direct coupling" (which I did to my guitar) that I have talked about, and how it not only increases greatly the sustain, but the tone too:
http://www.edroman.com/tech/directcoup.htm
Here is my neck finish (which involves the tone too):
http://www.edroman.com/tech/1500g.htm
My LP neck is sort of like this as far as trimming down the back of the body:
http://www.edroman.com/tech/neckjoint.htm
Poly verses Nitro (about tone):
http://www.edroman.com/tech/neckjoint.htm
TONE WOODS GUYS.......TONE WOODS....READ THEM ALL CAREFULLY:
http://www.edroman.com/wood/main.htm
Buzz Feiten Tuning System (like mine):
http://www.edroman.com/guitar/buzzfeiten.htm
Oh yes, MY fretwork was done by hand verses by machine all at once:
http://www.edroman.com/tech/fretwork.htm
And finally......neck construction and Tone. Ah yes, you will look under "Bolt-IN" for my neck (well.....my version, real close anyway):
http://www.edroman.com/tech/neckconstruction.htm
Trapper, Mark, I will now go and find as many articles as I can remember to back up these that I have already posted. After all, ONE persons Tech Articles are not carved in stone in this world. You asked for them, you got them!! I will post the rest by PM if this is starting to bother anyone here on the forum. Ricco
anyone else notice they changed the music so it isnt so boring

GW 100 greatest METAL guitarists? BS!
by narcen on Thu Jan 22, 2004 9:26 am
What the He!! is considered Metal nowadays? Just a few bullsh!t entries........Brian May/Queen, Alex Lifeson/Rush, Def Lep, Bon Jovi,....amongst many others. Gimme a break. Yeah, some great guitarists, but to call them "Metal" and to include them with the likes of Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman, Dimebag, Mustaine & Marty Friedman and many other REAL metal guitarists, come on now!?!?!?!
While searching for some live stuff on the internet, I stumbled upon this old clip of I.M. doing Iron Maiden in '83. Thought I'd share. Bare with me I'll try to post the pics.

by mpire on Thu Jan 22, 2004 12:47 pm
The new Guitarworld was waiting for me at home when I went for lunch (5 minute commute, gotta love that), anyway Dimebag is on the cover, holding what appears to be a copy of the natural finish ML, even has rounded points...
Best pic I can find on the washburn site is the mouseover on signature series :
it's small, but you get the idea, the flame looks just like Brave Daves..(Funny you should mention that ponch)

Hey bro I've been thinking about that XXL. I haven't played one yet. Hows the quality, tones, ect. can you get alot of good sounds or is it a "one trick pony"? is it loud enouogh to jam with? Does it start farting when you really crank it or does it start to sound better the louder you push it? I've heard alot of great reviews on it and I would definately like to save some money!
Good story behind the Vulgar Display of Power's cover
I don't know you guys have heard this before.
If you have, forgive me.
I just read in the magazine and I just want to share.
Here how it goes briefly:
They came up with the title and they knew that it's a pretty strong name. Phil, a boxing fan, decided to have someone get punched on the cover. Then, the band asked their label to get the picture. However, the label gave them pictures of someone got punched in the ring. Vinnie said that's not it, it has to be the "street fight".
So, the camera guy hired some dude to be punched over and over until he satisfied with the pic. That dude got $10 per punch and it took 30 times to get what the guy wanted. On the tour, that dude came and talked to the band "Hey, I'm that dude on your cover",
"no, sh*t" they replied because they didn't know who the guy was.
Then he said, "man, all I got was $300, but nevermind my face is on the million covers."
Good story man!
Have you heard this news about Dimebag before?
I found this at the Metalhammer website.
and I'm pretty shocked.
Saturday Night's Alright For Rock, Chad + Dimebag
17 Dec 2002 Kid Rock, Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell have joined forces to cover Elton John's 'Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)'.
The project was lead by Kroeger, but was more of a virtual collaboration as the three never actually shared studio space, but e-mailed music files to each other, tweaking them along the way with the help of ProTools.
Kroeger told MTV News, "we're tuning down to Z, and we're just grinding. We're both just screaming our balls off."
OK, man. they didn't go to the studio together but making music with Kid Rock and Nickelfuckinback!
I'm speechless.
TonePros and Sperzel tuners??
Hi all,
I am going to install a TonePros bridge and Specrzel tuners on my Evo Deluxe. Will this effect tone in any way....in a negative way???? I was hoping the bridge would be a positive step, but I am worried that the tuners could adversely effect tone? Stupid?

Dean getting NAMM props on other sites
by Lon on Fri Jan 23, 2004 9:01 am
Friend of mine from the Meniketti site was at NAMM and gave his review of all the major marques. This is what he had this to say about Deans:
Dean Guitars:
Killer stuff again. Perfect fit, finish, and playability. These guys make great stuff and it's very consistent. The Hardtails are Heavy, the Cadillacs have small necks, the pointy guitars and flat out amazing. I taped another Michael Angelo performance. This time he played the double neck guitar. Damn. You'll just have to wait till I post the video.
Hi all.
We have received some emails asking us to return to the forum.
We have also been asked for prices on new Dean guitars.
Many of you wanted to know why we left the forum as well.
So here is the deal.
I may not be posting many posts, but I am lurking around.
Please feel free to call or email me anytime.
I look forward to talking with you.
We will continue to offer the lowest prices on all gear possible.
Our staff will always be courteous and knowledgeable.
And the best part is that we now have financing!
Yep up to 5 years! We also have 1 year same as cash with no interest.
I met some really great forumites here, and I still look forward
to meeting many more over time.
As far as being a dealer, we will continue being a Dean dealer. That was really never a question for me. Awesome product at awesome prices. The new Dean's kick A??!
For those of you that want to continue purchasing instruments through Bass & Treble, I say you cant go wrong.
Dave is a stand up guy, stocks heavy, and has great prices.
I never tried to lure customers away from any other dealer.
Maybe some forumites thought this, but it is not true.
There are many Dean instruments out there, and many fantastic Dean dealers too.
I just say, use the dealer that you are most comfortable with.
Flame on.
I am sure that this post will have some flames.
It’s really a shame, I am not try to do so at all.
So please, please, please don’t start a flame war here.
see ya soon,
Gregory

Former Judas Priest drummer convicted
by jim6 on Fri Jan 23, 2004 11:17 am
LONDON (AP) - The former drummer for heavy metal band Judas Priest was convicted Friday of attempting to rape a teenager whom he was giving drum lessons.
David Holland had denied assaulting the 17-year-old, who has learning difficulties, at the drummer's rural English home in 2002. The youth cannot be named for legal reasons.
A jury at Northampton Crown Court found Holland guilty of one charge of attempted rape and five counts of indecent assault. A co-accused, 22-year-old Spiros Laouitaris, was cleared of four counts of indecent assault.
Holland, 55, wept in the dock as the verdicts were read out.
Judge Charles Wide asked for a pre-sentence report on the risk the former rocker posed to adolescent boys.
Prosecutors said the teenager, who had sometimes stayed overnight at Holland's house while taking lessons, wrote a letter to his parents in December 2002 describing the abuse.
"It revealed that things were happening at his drum teacher's house that shouldn't have been happening," said prosecution lawyer Maria Savvides.
Holland joined the hard-rocking British band in 1979 and stayed for a decade, through its most successful period. Judas Priest churned out a string of heavy-metal classics, including "You've Got Another Thing Coming,""Living After Midnight" and "Hell Bent for Leather."
Holland left the group in 1989. Leather-clad singer Rob Halford departed for a solo career in 1993 but announced last July that he was returning for a world tour and a new album.

As a new Dean owner I just wanted to say hi and relate my experience with playing a Dean for the first time with my band last night.
All I can say is - Oh my God! Holy crap! What a guitar!
I've had Flying V fever for awhile now and after reading the reviews in GP I decided to check one out. I'd never played a Dean before. I bought a used V Select and plugged it into my little Marshall practice amp and it sounded sweet thru that. But when I played it thru my rig at practice last night it came alive. At first the guys were just looking at it because it is so beautiful. But when we started playing everybody was just smiling at me through every song. That's a first. They never did that before. And I have some nice pieces. But this is one of those special guitars that just has "the tone". It cut right thru the mix - in a good way. I could hear every note even thru heavy distortion. Very balanced tonally. I can feel the guitar vibrating thru my body. I was convinced that I was going to switch out the pickups for DiMarzio SD's but now I'm not so sure about that. It blows away my buddies Historic RI $3000 LP! A used $400 Korean made stock guitar! No exageration. After the first set I looked at our singer and said "She's a keeper".
Sorry to go on about this but I've been playing a long time, have had or played just about every kind of guitar and I have never had such a positive experience with an instrument. I know all about the "Honeymoon" period but this is different.
Now I see what you guys are talking about.
Captain Kangaroo
by jim6 on Fri Jan 23, 2004 2:48 pm
Fresh off the news wire...............
----------
Bob Keeshan, who gently entertained and educated generations of children as television's walrus-mustachioed Captain Kangaroo, died Friday at 76.
Keeshan, who lived in Hartford, Vt., died of a long illness, his family said in a statement.
Keeshan's "Captain Kangaroo" premiered on CBS in 1955 and ran for 30 years before moving to public television for six more. It was wildly popular among children and won six Emmy Awards, three Gabriels and three Peabody Awards.
----------
You young turks won't remember him, but he was a staple of morning TV for a verrry long time. And pretty entertaining.

CLOSE to buying new icon, couple questions!
Hi, folks. I've been obsessively guitar shopping and reading up on various things for the last couple weeks and have about decided to buy a Dean as the best value for the quality/price anywhere!
I'm most interested in the icon, but have never seen or heard of a "string through body" design before. My question is this: how good is this design? What are the pros/cons of it, and how does it compare to other bridge systems? Also, I'm fairly intermediate in the world of guitars and my technical knowledge is limited. Can I mount another bridge type such as a Tone Pros or stop bar without leaving visible marks behind on the guitar (assuming I have a qualified tech make the installation)?
Any help you can offer is appreciated and I offer my thanks in advance! Keep rockin'...

I just got the latest issue of Guitar Player in the mail with a letter. The magazine has a new look. I actually like it. The layout is better and at least for this issue they seem to focus more on REAL guitar players instead of the typical winny singing and strumming power chord woosies!

J-Station or Tech 21 SansAmp PSA-1 Pre-amp
by pete99 on Sat Jan 24, 2004 1:06 am
What are some opinions on these....I hear the tech-21 has some real brutal, heavy distortion, which is exactly what i want. The J-station sounds pretty heavy to, a friend sent me a sound clip and it was cool. Also you can hook it up to your computer and download sound patches and record music.
So which should it be, or can anyone give me some more suggestions.
