Lightining Strikes Twice - HELP!
by Kragax on Fri Oct 01, 2004 10:13 am
OK Guys, I need help here as luck would have it just as I commited on the Stylist I come across another Dean. This is not a common thing around here. This guy has a Vendetta, and this is the story he said he bought it new about 10-12 years ago and that he paid 1200.00 for it. I has a really nice finish and gold hardware. I has the zebra pickups as well. The finish is a goldish/spalted?? I dunno I wasn't looking too close as I was in a hurry and so was he. Here is the kicker. He will sell it to me for 350.00 with the hardshell case.
From what I saw the action looked tight but I never actuall handled the guitar so.. The question is the retal sheet doesn't even come close to a 1200.00 vendetta. Where there ever any USA vendettas? Could this be a 12 year old hardtail? The price is right for a better axe but I could get a vendett 4 from Dave at B&T for not a whole lot more. So you guys are the experts what do you think this thing is worth?
G&L Legacy
by hsech on Fri Oct 01, 2004 12:59 pm
I recently got a US 1997 G&L Legacy Special. This guitar was a find. It's in dead mint condition. It's transparent cherry burst on a swamp ash body. It has an ebony fretboard, creme pearl pickguard, noisless G&L dual blade pickups in the neck and middle position and a power stacked humbucker in the bridge. It has graph tech saddles and a graphite nut and string tree. Best sounding Strat style guitar I've owned.

Pickups in Spalted V?
by jimlp on Sat Oct 02, 2004 9:31 am
I am seriously considering buying a spalted V from a local dealer but I am wondering what pickups are in the guitar. The pickups are covered and have regular pole pieces, not hex heads like the Super Distortions that come in most TC's. On the web page it only says "custom wound" pickups by Dimarzio, well I played this V back to back with a TC Z and the tone is very different. I realize that the Z has more mass but the sound was not realy close to the same. Should I assume that these are Super Distortions with different pole pieces or does anyone know if they are different pickups all together. I do know that this guitar was a NAMM guitar, did they use special pickups on those models? Thanks in advance for your help, I have to make a buy/no buy decision on Sunday.
Easy Question, music fans
I'm contemplating shooting a live DVD. My ? izz, what would you be willing to pay for a cd, live dvd, and shipping and handling? Iz $25 total in the ballpark? They would be available on the website. So, say you go see this really cool band, then ya take the time to look em up on the web. There's a cd and dvd for $25 shipped. Would ya do it? I'm mapping this out as a business plan, so I can do it without getting a second mortgage on the house. Realistically, I know what I can peddle in clubs at shows, but the web izza wide open unkown vista to me. This will be authored/edited/mastered by pros and shot with three cameras. Probably in a 700 capacity club with a big stage, and pro lighting and sound. An hour and a half, probably. Iz the price right?

Hey all,
I was at the guitar store today and there was a used Boss GE-6 (it's replaced by the GE-7) for $90can, and I wanted to know if it's any good. I might trade my Boss HM-2 which I got from Dana in for it.

DAVE MUSTAINE'S NEW AXXION ESP GUITAR
by BULL on Sun Oct 03, 2004 3:16 am
I've seen him with this guitar in various guitar mags. He said he designed it 15 years ago, and no guitar company wanted to design it until now. I think its a pretty cool lookin' guitar. They are going to have a limited run of the guitar. Not sure how many, but we all know it'll be a arm and a leg.
Yep, it sure does...just like Basic training only they don't call you private here, they call you sergeant...and yes, I am now a holder of that title as of October 1st...now to do my last 10 days and get the heck out of here...this course is very easy, but it blows big time!
Dean in Vintage Guitar
by tess on Sun Oct 03, 2004 9:05 am
Big Dean exposure in the November issue.
1. Dean Hardtail on the cover
2. Article about Kerry Livgren with giant color shot of him playing a green quilt Hardtail
3. B&W pic of Kerry with Caddy Serial #1.
4. Full page color ad of Dean Z with the Redwood Hardtail
5. 1 page article reviewing the Hardtail. Two color pics of the Hardtail that is on the cover.
Very positive article on the Hardtail. The say... "Rock players, the HardTail may be your new champion!". Also... "Given the quality of every facet of this guitar - hand built construction, set-neck design, great woods, bee-yuu-tiful maple top, sleek hardware, fantastic playing feel, etc., etc., etcetera, it's not surprising that the Dean HardTail Collector's Edistion retail's at $4,224. but it's about the finer things, sometimes, isn't it?"
Pic up this issue as this is as good as it gets.

Here is a pic of the bottom left of the cover.
Have anybody seen the black denim color ?
I just wondered if anybody has seen the black denim color that in my opnion seems very interesting as im thinking of custom ordering a TC V.
Anybody seen it or even better have pics of it,the answer i got from the Dean support wasnt very satisfying, they gave me a link to the blue denim and said it would be similar but black.
I like the blue denim pretty much but blue isnt really my color so thats why im considering the black denim.

by stratman on Tue Oct 05, 2004 10:48 am
First of all I want to thank Hotrat and everyone else who answered my earlier questions. Hotrat you are right, this is a sweet guitar. I've done a little work on the guitar, and it fills the gap in my arsenal nicely. First of all, the tremolo was giving me fits. I had removed a "modification", made by the owner prior to hotrat, that had fixed the tremolo in a position where you could not access the intonation screws. When I did that, the back of the trem would travel forward until it was all the way up. I ended up putting in a adjustment screw, and tapping a hole into the travel stop on the backside of the bridge to re-fix the bridge in place, but with access to the intonation screws. I now understand the fine tune adjustment for the saddles (this is my first non-strat trem, non-hardtail guitar). I put in a new nut, the old one was cracked, although I will probably swap it for an earvana nut soon. I installed a set of Schaller strap locks, standard for all of my guitars. The pickups were a little hot for my taste, so I ended up installing a set of Custom Shop Parts Zebra "Hex" PAF style pickups. For $42.00 for the pair, they sound as close to a Duncan 59 as I like, without the price tag (these are my first attempt at using off-brand pickups). I ended up using a set of bobbin toppers to make the pickups cream/purple zebra, they actually look great (this is a purple burst Hollywood Z). I do have a set of Ibanez purple pickup rings that I might install, but I need to cut them down, they are way to tall, they guitar has black rings now. I did find a case, a used case. It looks like it is probably a bass case, as I've got extra room at the headstock, about 6", but the body is nice and snug, and the neck is supported well. And the last mod I made was this past Saturday, I swapped out the tuners for a set of Planet Waves Auto-trim locking tuners. I know, locking tuners with a hard tail? I really like the convenience of the locking tuners for changing strings on the fly, and the auto-trim tuners actually cut the excess off as you tune up the string. The 18:1 ratio is a nice plus too. My band did a show a couple weeks ago, and I ended up using this guitar for our last set, which is our 80's set. I received lots of compliments on the guitar's looks and tone.

Recording in 5.1 Surround Sound?
by BLOYD on Tue Oct 05, 2004 11:57 am
Ok, when I was finishing up “Wanna Play” at Morrisound studios Jim Morris played me some of the recently completed Iced Earth stuff they had recorded in 5.1 surround sound. Well, of course I started thinking of all the cool stuff that could be done when you have those options at your disposal.
I’m getting set to book some time to record a song (about a 10 minute piece) in 5.1 surround that I want to post on my site as a free download…our burn a copy for whoever wants it…my other option is to just use that time to start recording the next CD…
I was curious to know how many people actually have access to a 5.1 surround system?

Pickup change
by Stone on Tue Oct 05, 2004 3:27 pm
So I changed the pickups out of my new EVO Special Select and completely re-wired it. Put a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge and an Air Classic in the neck . DAMN!!!! That made all of the difference in the world! I wired the pickups out of phase, and I'm getting this less gainy, slightly mid boosted, cool as hell tone in the middle position which is perfect for rythm work......I'm lovin it!
well i finaly got moved in to new house still no phone or internet have to use work's isp lol the place is awesome compared to old place still trying to fig where i packed charger for camera batterys to take pic's, yesterday was my birthday and since i never get anything from anybody i bought the green Z from B&T , so soon should have pic's of it at new place and after get rest out of storage a big family pic

I'm starting to run out of wall space between the guitars and these things..
You know what's weird about how you get informed on these?
It's not how you'd think.
You don't get a call from the patent office, or even an email or letter.
You don't hear about it from your work.
Hell no.
You get mail from companies who make certificates that "commemorate" the occasion that they want to sell you for $200 a pop. THAT is how you find out. And they're fast too. There's a lot of companies trying to sell these things, so they want to be the first to get to you. Today I got no less than 4 separate registered letters about this one.
Fortunately for me, our company provides the plaque things.
Oh well. Not a gold record or a custom caddy (yet), but it'll do..
=)

Questions from a potential Dean owner
Hello,
First post here, so I'll introduce myself.
My name is Mark and I'm a guitarist here in Colorado. I've owned 6 different Dean guitars in my life. Unfortunetly the last time I owned one was 1989. I travel a lot to play and my Dean case was in bad shape. So I started traveling with my Strat and I eventually just used Fenders.
But now I'm looking into getting another Dean. The Time Capsule series is a little pricey for me, so I'm looking at the '79 V series. Which brings me to my first question.
What should be upgraded (via 3rd party hardware) to improve the'79 series. I assume that the pickups are of lower quality then the higher end model? Do I need a new bridge? Tuners? What are some opinions. I'll be using the guitar as a 2nd guitar for live shows. Is the '79 series good enough as-is?
My next question is about finding a dealer. I don't believe there is a Dean dealer within a few hours of me (probably across the state). Who are some reputable mail order dealers? Unfortunetly the places I normally order from (Sam Ash, Sweetwater) don't appear to be dealers.
All help appreciated.
Mark

by BENKIA on Fri Oct 08, 2004 9:45 am
what should it be. I have a Explorer with a SH-4 JB in it and i have a MLF with a Dimebucker in it the Dimebucker doesnt sound as fat and sweet as the JB infact it sounds rather thin.
If was to get another JB would it add that fat sweetness or is it that the explorer has more wood on it?
Dimebucker pickups
by tnvol on Fri Oct 08, 2004 3:23 pm
Has anyone out there used Dimebuckers? How are they compared to an X2N? The X2N in my 79 ML sounds awesome but I might consider a Dimebucker but just havent heard one yet. Does anyone here use them? How do you like it?

No need to tell you that I am a BIG Dean European fan... my username is obvious. Please post your favorite Euro-Dean pics. Hungry for good Czech eye-candy
I scored both of these for under 500 bucks each. The Caddy kills most Les Pauls even with stock pickups and the Icon puts PRS 6-feet under with the Duncans that I installed myself. Neither will be for sale for a long time unless I really hit the skids. I will whore out my wife before I let go of these babies. More pics to come as soon as I take some.
Question for the Tampa / ST Pete / Clearwater folks.
I finally did my flight plans last night. I got decent airfare from the smaller airport near me (20 minutes as opposed to an hour and a half down to NYC) but I'm flying into the St. Pete airport, as opposed to Tampa Int. I'll be landing closer to the hotel so that's a good thing.
Now, the silly question - does this smaller airport have a rental car agency? And - which ones? I haven't had a chance to look yet. Yeah, I'm a little slow at times.
thx!

Engineering a killer guitar sound
I stumbled across a way to get a smoking guitar tone yesterday. Here's what I did--> using 4 mics(a rode nt-1, a shure sm 57, and two audio-technica mb 2000l's) I experimented with the placements of these 4, trying to capture on disc what the amp actually sounded like to my ears' in the room. Got close, but couldn't nail it down. Then! I ran the two a/t 2000lmb's thru 2 channels of my Roland VS 1680 with a tascam cassette recorder placed in the effects/out for these two channels, and OH MY GAWD! It was heaven! I recorded the tone to cassette tape, and rerouted the lines back to the effects returns, and there it was! The onboard mic pre's on the Roland warmed the channels just right, I guess. The Rode was at 4 feet, the sm 57 at 3 feet and the mb2000l's were at the speakers, offset from the cones. I blended all four at the mixer, and 'bout juiced in me pants! This works for clean and driven tones. Maybe Lewno can tell us what I've discovered, and why it works. But, for now, I've placed tape on the floor and written all the measurements/settings down! The tape machine izza tascam 488 cassette recorder. I was recording my SLM V-50 amp and red flame evo special. The evo is one of two that I have that are loaded with old 70's DiMarzio SD's. The amp is one of two that I have that are biased on the warm side with the new groove tube 'mullardish' 12AX7M's in the preamp and JJ's EL34's in the power section. I have replaced the speakers in the amps with Carvin BR-12's and THAT was the most effective upgrade of all. I have two Genz-Benz 2x12's also, but they don't contribute much tonewise, So I'm just using them for looks(expensive amp stands ) These are 50 watt class A/B made in the USA pt. to pt. hand wired amps that people should be looking at. They go for cheap on the 'bay sometimes. They are a cool circuit that would respond well to most mods. A boutique amp for low $$. I wanna mod my main amp with a footpedal to replace the gain knob, so I can give 'er some gas when I need it! I am mostly a Strat man, but I really love what my hot rod eVos' bring out in these amps. The heavy, driven tone is like nothing I've ever heard before. I think people will freak! I've got the two evos, four strats(an olympic white w/ tortise shell '63, a 3 tone sunburst '69, a vintage white 80's smith strat, and a shoreline gold metallic w/ pearloid p/g self built, all with maple boards) and my whacked out over the top Telecaster. They all have a very different flavor thru this setup. The p/ups in the strats are anything from the originals( for the '63 and '69) to Kinnmans in the gold one, and a coupla mixed baggers in the smith. I think one is from an old Ibanez Roadster, it has a ceramic magnet, the other two are??? maybe Japanese? I expect to be having some MAJOR FUN the next few days!!!

PRS Sucks!
by Faust on Sun Oct 10, 2004 10:30 am
OK, I don't usually go on a bashing rant, but I have had a lot of coffee today
I keep seeing PRS guitars going for way too much money. What the hell for? I have played more of them than I care to count and they suck to play. What's up with that two-by-four neck (around the 15th fret the neck goes totally square and flat) and someone please explain the benefit of a non-intonating bridge on the "McCarty" series that was phased out in the 1950's for obvious reasons. I don't understand the appeal.
Something stinks about the pickups and the rotating selector switch. I tried it and it was like cable TV... keep changing channels and finally turn it off because there is nothing good on anywhere. I could not find a good sound on it at all.
I just don't get it.
Some people call the Dean Icon a "PRS killer"... but that is not fair. To kill a PRS is like pushing a guy in a wheelchair down some stairs.
OK... so they have some nice tops on them... Who doesn't?
30,000 dollars for a Dragon with nauseating inlay on it? I would rather wear an Evil-Knevil suit on stage than play one in front of my friends. Looks fine on a wall, but WTF? Why???
In the 80's (before I got a job and use to really PLAY) we used to call PRS a "Lawyer guitar" because the only people who could afford one were Lawyers and Doctors. Guitar Resurrection in Austin Texas would sell tons of them to yuppies and you would never EVER see one on stage at any local venues. One time a friend of mine picked one up to try it out at Guitar Resurrection and the guy who runs the place said "Hey... what are you doing? This isn't a library where street kids like you can come in and just pick up stuff and look at it"..... I never spent a dime in that shop again. Still hate that guy today. You'll know him when you see him. He's the bald guy with the buck-teeth.
Grrrr.....

Dean Guitars Welcomes Michael Schenker
by Dean Z on Sun Oct 10, 2004 12:28 pm
We are proud to announce the official endorsement of Michael Schenker. Michael is a legend, one of the all time greats and 100% has a tone that he owns. A big part of the project was to capture the Schenker tone in the Michael Schenker Models. That is why all USA models and better imports will come with USA made custom wound pickups.
There will initially be 4 Michael Schenker models. The first to be introduced will be 100 limited edition ...USA Made ...all individually signed and numbered by Michael himself. If you are interested, I suggest contacting your favorite Dean USA dealer.
We are extremely excited about this most important signing. The initial response we have received by dealers and overseas distributors has been nothing short of impressive!
Kindest regards,

by Faust on Mon Oct 11, 2004 9:16 am
I want to get a Roland synth ready guitar, but I am insulted by the prices of the Brian Moore guitars. Dean had a Roland-ready guitar on their website briefly which looked like a Del Sol with the synth pickup hidden in it.
It just kind of disappeared from the website.
Did they ever make this guitar? Or was there a lawsuit from Brian Moore over the synth-ready setup?
Pickup question
by tnvol on Mon Oct 11, 2004 10:04 am
I put an X2N in my DOA ML this weekend. I wired it up correctly but all I get is a clean sound. If I touch my finger to the volume lead, the sound distorts like it is supposed to but goes back to clean when I remove my finger. Does this sound like a grounding problem? I have tried about everything I can think of. Everything looks right and I didnt remove anything but the original bridge pickup lead. I have wired tons of pickups and never had this happen before. Any ideas?

Report: KISS 'Rock The Nation' Tour Was One Of Summer's Biggest Flops - Oct. 11, 2004
According to an article in the USA Today, KISS' "Rock the Nation" tour was one of the summer's bigger flops. Based on the figures released by Billboard Boxscore, KISS sold 49 percent of all tickets, with an average of 8,444 tickets sold per show. The hottest acts of the summer were bands like JIMMY BUFFETT, PHISH and the DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, who sold more than 20,000 tickets per show. MADONNA and PRINCE have also sold 100 percent of their tickets.
"KISS may have rang that farewell tour bell one too many times," commented Billboard's Ray Waddell. "There were only two originals. And how many times can you go to the well without offering something new and different."

Report: KISS' Atlanta Concert Was Less Than 25 Percent Full - Oct. 11, 2004
Hits Daily Double reports: "How bad was this summer’s touring season? At an Aug. 4 at an Atlanta amphitheatre that seats 18,389, veteran rockers KISS — used to doing big business — sold only 4,345 tickets, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of what observers are calling 'one of the slowest summers ever.' Despite the success of several country tours and the Vans Warped Tour, disappointing turnouts for acts like FLEETWOOD MAC, SIMON & GARFUNKEL, NORAH JONES, GLORIA ESTEFAN and KISS, not to mention the cancellation of Lollapalooza, have promoters blaming artists and their reps for greedily driving up ticket prices — especially for bad seats at shows by middling acts. Artist agents, however, counter that they can't be blamed for selling to the highest bidder, though William Morris agent Marc Geiger concedes it's 'greed' that drives up artist asking prices. Something's got to give, but 'The change has to be executed by the people who write the checks, and that's the promoters,' says House of Blues VP Alex Hodges. As KISS manager Doc McGhee put it, 'They did good business. Maybe not good enough for what people paid them.' "

Have you found your tone?
by Kragax on Tue Oct 12, 2004 3:18 pm
I have beating myself to death trying to get the sound that I want. I have tried 10 or 12 different pedals, an RP-6 processor, a RP-100 processor, two different amps(same 4x12) and I am about to put the whole shebang on Ebay and be done with it. Has anyone been through this prosess latley? (And women say they have a hard time giving birth)
Cathedral Rules!
by Faust on Tue Oct 12, 2004 3:52 pm
I have been listening to nothing but Cathedral for weeks now. I can not rip it out of my CD player! It has become an addiction. These guys write real songs and use real tube tone. Lots of Black Sabbath doom with 70's style songs and production.
They make albums the way albums USED to be made.
Killer stuff! Check it out!
Anyone else suscribe to TrueFire? Check this guy out -

Dean Endorsees
by tnvol on Tue Oct 12, 2004 6:28 pm
With all the talk of the MS V and all I was wondering something. I saw the Def Leppard movie on VH1 a while back and they were playing a couple different Deans. A green Caddy and I think there was an ML as well. Did they ever endorse Dean guitars back when they first started?
Dean Caddy Bass? When did they make this?
Its basically a DOA Bass but its black. WTF? Did I miss something?

Dave Meniketti's (Y&T) web site is currently hosting a "rehearsal" recording of a 1995 live Y&T jam in Dave's studio. "This was one of the first performances of 'Fly Away' as the band was jamming to come up with the idea for the song," reads a posting on the site. "This is a little 'sneak peek' into the typical way Y&T writes songs in the studio. Dave remembers that they dimmed the lights in the studio so that they were almost playing in the dark (the only thing missing was some incense!). Recorded straight to DAT, no overdubs, no mixing or anything...raw & full of energy! Dave, Phil, and Jimmy are jamming here as a trio."

2 MICHAEL SCHENKER SONGS ON THIS FORUM
by BULL on Wed Oct 13, 2004 8:34 pm
Nice choice of SCHENKER music. I like that riff on the song, "Are you ready to rock". Thats off the live album "Assult Attack" from 1981. Th other song featuring a nice melodic riff by Michael. On the Dean artist page of him the songs called "Rock and roll believer" from the 2003 album off Shrapnel Records called "ARACHNOPHOBIC". Great singer also CHRIS LOGAN as well as a great album.
Joe Satriani and Dean Guitars?
Anyone know if Joe Satriani is talking with Dean Guitars? He was in Ft. Myers last Thursday and I heard he would be visiting Clearwater.

Folks. If you are tired of accidentally being posted as "Guest" and seeing people leave inflammatory if not irrelevant posts as "Guest"... speak up!
I have been a member of another forum where you had to log in to post and it really cut down on the noise. People usually will not post inflammatory garbage if they have to register their e-mail address and log on to do it.
This really is the finest board I have visited and I will keep coming back. It is a good experience for all who contribute. Let's keep it that way.
Speak up and let the moderators and administrators know that this board is too good to lose to spammers and idiots.
Bass for a Guitar Player
by kevphol on Thu Oct 14, 2004 1:56 pm
So I’m looking at some basses and I see a Dean Rhapsody that I really like in looks, pup config, etc., BUT it’s a 5 string. Now I know that a whole lot of bass players are moving to 5 strings, but I’m thinking that might not be necessary or comfortable for me to play just for recording. Then I check out the specs and the nut width is 1-1/2 inches! WHAT??? Shouldn’t it be like 2 freakin’ inches for a 5 string?? Then I check, for grins, the specs on my EVO and Del Sol. The EVO is 1-5/8 and the Del Sol is 1-11/16! I know the neck widens a lot more on the bass going toward the body, but is it really going to feel that different to me from a regular 4 string?
Hmmmmmm.....
Killer new US thrash metal band!

I GOT MY '79 SERIES LIMITED EDITON BLUEBURST FLYING V GUITAR
by BULL on Thu Oct 14, 2004 11:36 pm
Well I hesiated to call Ed Roman because I had a bad experience with him before. Like I posted before I faxed him some info and never got an email back. Well today I called and this reall cool dude answered(wished I'd got his name, yes Ed does have a cool at least one cool salesman.) I asked the man what the deal was he said man your guitar is on its way. I UPS delievered it. The only bad thing about the deal they did send a case with it(didn't charge me either, read the ad it says it comes with one. Oh well I'm gonna get a case tommorow. Man this guitar not only is one of the baddest look axes ever. It's also the best playing guitars I have ever played. DEAN did an awesome job with this axe. I'm so happy!!!!!!!! I'LL POST THE PICS TOMMOROW WAIT YOU'LL GUYS DROOL!!!!!!!!!!???????!!! (I KNOW I HAD TO PAY MY HARD EARNED MONEY TO ED BUT HES THE ONLY ONE CARYY THE '79 SERIES BLUEBURT.)
My search has ended.
After visited every dealer with 100 miles, emailing the local product rep, emailing Dean and emailing dealers I finally have my guitar on the way.
I don't mean any disrespect to other dealers, but 2 of them stood out. Bass & Treble and Legends Guitar. Both of these dealers answered every question I had, returned emails and we very helpful. These guys are a credit to music retailers. I wish I could get that kind of service with all the gear I buy.
I ended up going with Legends because they had exactly what I was looking. A '79 Black V. I had Duncan Distortions put in the guitar. Got a case also.
Can't wait to get it!

GUITARIST YOU LIKE THERE STYLE PLAYING SONG WRITING ETC.
by BULL on Fri Oct 15, 2004 11:53 pm
Dave Mustaine- his riffs, riffs and more riffs plus must of the time I think hes an excellent song writer
Michael Schenker- none more melodic, none possess his nack for the catches riffs and hooks one of the best soloist you'll ever hear
Toni Iommi- Talk about riffs the man just slams you with the most simplest memorable riffs in the histroy of guitar. His riffs and rythm stlyes is so great that hes soloing is over vastly of looked.
Nuno Bettencourt- the king of the string skipping riffs dance like hooks put the funk back in hard rock like Pat Travers once did.
George Lynch- monster tone awesome legato player nice all around touch
Doug Aldrich- brings the meat and potatoes back to hard rock slammin' riffs great song writer. Dio should have really tried harder not to loose him to Whitesnake.
There are more for me but as of right now these man are it just plain awesome guitarist

Favorite Pickups!
by Faust on Sat Oct 16, 2004 9:27 am
What are your favorite pickups and why? What do you like about them and how do they sound the best for you?
I really like Lindy Fralin 8K, 9K humbuckers. Very cool vintage PAF tone with a slight overwind that gives them power with clean articulation and feel. They feel like absolute magic! They sound great through just about everything I have tried, clean or dirty.
What's your fave?
Anyone have an explanation
I was looking at buyin my first dean a evo xm and this is what the reviews say whats the deal?
This is NOT Honduran Mahogany. This is probably Basswood that has been stained. The light weight of the Guitar should be your first clue. Second clue...remove the electonics cover. See where the "stain" ends? WHITE WOOD.
Now let's talk about the "maple" neck. This has got to be the worst looking porous wood I've ever seen on a guitar.
It's just OK for the price. There are MUCH better choices, even at the $99 dollars I paid.
Dean Guitars marketing this to the public as Mahogany, I'll never buy or trust them again. EVER
They claim this guitar is made out of 1 piece mahogany. THIS IS #$%@! First I noticed the guitar is light as hell for mahogany. Next it was a two piece visibly obvious because of the wood grain. third, when I ripped out the electronics and started modifying the body I noticed the bare truth. It's a frippin fake natural finish. I customized alot of guitars and know what real mahogany is. This is brittle and splintering basswood crap! I just love how these companies make a few first runs(if that) with the stuff they advertise, then switch it off to extremely cheap s#%t and basically sell you a lie. Yes the guitar was worth $110, but would of set in me alot better if it was what I expected to get. frippin pricks
I love this to death.

dean custom zone?
by sbill on Sat Oct 16, 2004 6:59 pm
i saw a cool looking dean "custom zone" on ebay its bright green with mathcing colored fretboard. think its brand new.like the looks but how do they play/sound and whats a fair price?
Anybody read the reviews on the EVO XM on HC?
Quite worrying...they many say DEAN is mareting it as a mahogany body guitar but it is actually stained or laminated basswood..

I have a recurring self inflicted ailment that I continually reagrivate. I did it again last night doing a big Ole power bend at the end of "Popcorn". My little finger on my left hand at the last joint iz smoked. I always use all four fingers and when I feel like bending a note, I just do it. No matter which finger is covering it. I went tooo damn far again and did some tendon/cartilage damage. I often get a real deep bruise under the callous on that finger as well, so the feeling is kinda iffy in it. I bent that sucka up to the stars until the joint popped and now I can't hardly use it at all, even for chording. It will be a couple weeks before it's usable again, dangit. Maybe my chiropractor can help... Any bodee else get this problem from time to time?

I have one of these bikes and it really gets the looks on the trail. Good for airing out after a long time in my music den.

GEORGE LYNCH IS THE MAN
by BULL on Mon Oct 18, 2004 1:08 am
I've been listening to a lot of his stuff lately. His legato style his awesome for riffs and solos. I his "Will play for Food" cd its great. Covers Scorpion era Uli Jon Roth song "He's a women, She's a man", Rush "Anthem", Van Halen(Eddie eat your heart out the version is very intense)a couple of Randy Rhodes era OZZY stuff "Mr. Crowley", "Flying High Again" etc. great cd. When I seen last December I enjoyed his set much more than Yngwie's, though I did like Yngwie that night. Just want to see what u guys think.

Two Hardtails are better than one...
by Faust on Mon Oct 18, 2004 5:49 pm
Well Friends and neigbors, I got my other hardtail off of ebay. It feels exactly like my first one, but it has some minor differences (first one on the left is gold hardware/no signature, second one on the right is chrome hardware #77/100). My plan is to modify the one on the left to either Lindy Fralin or some other type of pickups and to keep the one on the right stock... maybe. We'll see.
I am a happy guy. Think I might have to change my name to something more "Dean USA". These two are the best guitars I have ever owned with no doubt in my mind at all!
I am a happy camper this week
Having Your House for Sale $uck$!!
We listed ours a few days ago and it has been a never ending parade of strangers coming through our house. To be expected I suppose - but we are fairly private people and it plain old $UCK$!!! We'll see what happens, but I suppose if and when it does sell, moving will $uck even more!!!!
Is it me, or has it changed. When you are on the main index page, the little button to the left of the Forum title lights up iif there and new posts in the forum since your last visit. Then, when you enter a foum, the ones with new posts you haven't read are lit up. If you go in and read a post, the light goes out.
But, in order to get the light on the main index page to go out, you have to read every new post inside that forum. I could be wrong, but I think it used to go out once you entered the forum. I do use that indicator to see where new stuff is, but I don't particularily want to read every thread - some I'm not interested in because I have read them before and they are of no interest to me. Because of that, all my little lights are lit up and the function has become useless to me.
Shouldn't the light go out once I have entered the forum to see what the new posts are? Then, if i don't want to read the thread with the new posts - the light can stay on inside the forum, but not the main page. Isn't that the way it used to work??

I would appreciate any recommendations anyone might have. I am looking for something in the $300 - $400.00 price range.
I like to play all kinds of music, except heavy metal and grunge. I am particular to classic rock and country.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Alejandro Silva... the next god of shred guitar?
by Faust on Tue Oct 19, 2004 12:36 pm
Folks... I have to get on my soap box!
Hear-ye! Hear-Ye!!!
Alejandro Silva is from Chile. He is absolutely amazing. Check him out. He is not very well known yet, but his CD's have recently become available on guitar9
www.guitar9.com
If you like Vai, Satriani, Becker, Malmsteen, Friedman etc... you will totally dig this guy.
He amazes me because he is as classical as Pagannini, As modern as Vai or Satch and as etherial as David Gilmour. He can also throw down hard power riffs. He covers so many bases and puts it all together into his own signature style. When I hear his tone, I know immediately it is Silva.
I would pick him to be the third guy on a G3 tour. His playing and song writing etc. is spellbinding. I never get tired of his CD's.
If he does not make it to the USA soon, I am considering making a trip to Chile to see him. He is THAT good.
Check him out!!!
Sound samples of all three of his CD's are available at:

Tried using a Boss GE-7 EQ pedal for a lead boost
by NickM on Tue Oct 19, 2004 3:08 pm
And it doesn't work! I have a feeling the pedal was supposed to be in the FX loop of the amp though. I tried it with an ESP Eclipse custom guitar (awesome) through a Roland amp with full gain. Is the pedal supposed to be in the FX loop?
This has been done to death......
But here we go again. The band needs a name. Actually, 2 bands need a name.
1st - All Air Traffic Controllers playing top 40 / classic rock. Lenny Kravitz, Bad Company, Collective Soul, Steelers Wheel, Free etc.
2nd - Again - all ATC's - playing blues/rock. Guess Who, Coco Montoya, Colin James, Poppa Chubby, Black Crowes, SRV. I was thinking "Bluz Control" for this one.
So, lets here what ya got!

The man just awesome I know we talked about him in the old forum . Now they are doing a re-work of there classic albums:"The Birthday Eve", "Devil Solider", "The Law of the Devil's Land", Disillusion" and the infamous American release"Thunder in the East". I feel Akira is vastly over looked in the USA the man is a shredding monster. Very Very Very memorable riffs, hooks and solos. I like his tone use of effects I feel hes got the whole package when it comes to that kinda of guitar playing.
Traynor Amps?
by Guest on Wed Oct 20, 2004 2:54 am
I'm starting to look for a new amp, something not totally top of the line but high enough quality that it wont need to be replaced for a LONG time. Recently Ive looked at Traynor amps, esp the YCV80q (4-10 all tube) and it sounds great from sound samples but I havent beem able to try one. I play mostly metal and hardrock so Im wondering if the gain on these is gonna be enough for the older metal, (not tuned down nu-metal), So, if anyones tried a traynor could you give me some info on what kind of gain you can get out them? Plus the 2 year even-if-you-break-it warranty seems great.
Avalanche Question
by mcvinyl on Wed Oct 20, 2004 7:49 am
Ok guys my GAS has kicked back in again. I'm looking to replace my Squier Strat with something better. I was really gassing after a Music Man Axis that has three single coils but it's a hell of a lot of money for a mainly bedroom player.
Then it hit me I love my EVO and I LLLOOOVVVEEE my Del Sol, why not look into an Avalanche MQ.
Any of you guys here have any experience with them? I read the reviews on HC and they received good marks there.
There was an "extremely objective " review from our very own Deanmaniac.
I see that Lon bought one just recently. Looking for any help I can get. Now it's over to Dave to see what kindof deal he can do.
Thanks
Simon
Need Help: Foggy/Tarnished hardware
I know this has been talked about before and I just did a search, but no joy. My Hardtail's hardware is a mess. I have tried Brasso, Silverware dip (which helped a little), and a couple of other similar things. Was a consensus ever reached on how to get that fog/tarnish off Dean hardware?
Any help would be much appreciated.

OK, I recently reaquired a 1963 Guild Thunderbird The s200 with the stand in the back of the body. I got the guitar 35 years ago, during tough times I sold it to a friend who sold it to a friend who is selling/giving it back to me. My Father bought it for me so there is sentimental value to it. But just for shitz and giggles does anyone have a bluebook for guitars? I wonder what that puppy is worth these days?

I have listened to "Withering on the vine" about 100 times now and I am addicted! I have ordered both of his CD's from guitar9... now I have to suffer and wait for them to arrive!
http://www.brianloyd.com/music.html
This guy is amazing!
Seems like anybody can shred or wah-wah etc.... but Bloyd has a very tasteful way of twisting notes and phrases. His music is more on the edge... reminds me a lot of Buckethead. Psycho-industrial guitar genius. His name is Brian Loyd.
We are fortunate to have him as a member of our forum.
Hats off to Bloyd!!!!

EDIT: A first and last name and email address are required to send the invite.
i noticed that there was a buffer burn mark on my tailplate on my 04 ML, and it went through the gold plating.. so, there's a light mark that just won't go away.. i asked Elliott about getting a replacement tailplate.. and asked about getting a new Wings Logo and some frosted nickle TC knobs for that 1995 Dean ACX strat-o-thing i bought off eBay.. i'm totally rebuilding/refinishing it..
he never asked me for payment.. and sent the parts out amazingly fast.. he even emailed me to ask if the parts were delivered to me..
well the parts got here, and i'm just stoked.. the Wings logos even have little "USA" logos to go with it.. i'm assuming that it was a special thing, as i've not seen a Dean Wings logo that has a "USA" on the headstock since the Tropical days.. this is great..
i know for a fact that other manufacturers wouldn't do something like this..
i'd just like to say that Elliott and DeanZ and Dean Guitars just kick some serious ass..
although, it would be nice to have a BB DOA..
wow.. i'm stoked.. unreal..
well, i'm for one looking forward to a 2005 DOA PimpBurst V... w/3 pickups, thank you..
Brave Dave's Birthday...

If I'm not mistaken it's our illustrious president's birthday this weekend.
Yes, the DOA'er known as Brave Dave is gonna be another year older.
I think it would be a nice gesture if all of us chipped in and got him
something for his upcoming celebrations...maybe, a guitar pick.
Hope ya have a good one Dave!

Costco has GAS (Bloomingdale, IL)
by Ranma on Thu Oct 21, 2004 1:20 am
A few gibbies and some crap, they also got one of them wierd beetles guitars. importantly they have Gibbys between $399 and $299 not bad however since this is costco they have the display guitars up where kids can't reach (smart on their part) I will send pics to y'all if I can. It is just a sampling though of what most places carry (except ed roman ) I think they are just testing the market some. They could be carring them for the holidays. I don't have specifics but they are their I think the gibbies are LP's (probably not USA LP's) Something cheap so people can give them as that X-mas present thing. You might want to check your nearby Costco for these I think that most of them are cheap POS but good for people begining.

I know this is like throwing a cat into a room full of dogs, but I could not help but notice the price and the fact that it has an EBONY fingerboard....
A little competition is good sometimes
Maybe Dean (My favorite guitar company) will have to do something to match this effort. I would vote for a Vendetta with Ebony board Yes Please!

Crankdaddy on the Howard Stern Show!
Hey, guys...sorry to toot my own horn, but I'm so excited I just had to share!
Some of you may be familiar with my band's song, "People Whose A s s e s I could Kick." Well, a couple months ago we recorded some new lyrics and changed it to "People Whose A s s e s Howard Could Kick."
We sent it in to the Howard Stern Show and yesterday morning he played it! Had some nice things to say about it, too!
I know everyone has a different opinon of Howard Stern, but there's no arguing with the value of a dude playing your song for 20 million listeners nationwide!

Hardtail model differences
by 46&2 on Thu Oct 21, 2004 5:35 pm
Is there a guide somewhere that explains the differences between all the Hardtail models? And ways to easily tell one from the other? For instances, is there a feature that's unique to the USA Hardtail that let's you know that it's really a USA Hardtail?

Preventing "Stand damage" to our priceless jewels
by Faust on Thu Oct 21, 2004 9:46 pm
Folks:
I read a posting in the Vintage Deans section where the staining effects of rubberized stands were discussed. There was a lot of VERY IMPORTANT info being thrown around there about using surgical tubing etc.
I use worn out T-shirts (cotton) to lay my guitars and I cover the rubba on the stands so it does not "rubba" my finish off... especially at the headstock on the hanging ones for the Z's.
Is there any bad result of using T-shirts this way? Don't worry... they are not original 80's tour shirts, just cheap freebies from stupid companies etc.
Let the wise men speak so that we can protect our herds of fine guitars. Let's all speak out to prevent "Stand damage"
ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING BOUT FL STUDIO
THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING DRUM MACHINE/LOOPS/SEQUENCER PROGRAM I HAVE EVER USED.
ONE PROBLEM. IT TAKES FOREVER TO MAKE REALISTIC SOUNDING DRUM BEATS. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET SOME PREMADE LOOPS AND BEATS TO DOWNLOAD SO I DONT HAVE TO SPEND SO MUCH TIME MAKING MY OWN. SOMETHING I CAN DOWNLOAD WOULD BE NICE SO THEN I CAN JUST MOVE OR ADD EXTRAS HERE AND THERE TO TWEAK THEM TO FIT .
PASSING THE TEST
A Pennsylvania State Trooper pulled a car over on I-81 about two
Miles north of the PA/MD state line. When the trooper asked the
driver why he was speeding, the driver answered that he was a
magician and a juggler, and he was on his way to Harrisburg to do a show that night at the Zembo Shrine Circus and didn't want to be late.
The trooper told the driver he was fascinated by juggling, and if the driver would do a little juggling for him, he would not give him a ticket. The driver told the trooper that he had sent all of his equipment on ahead and didn't have anything to juggle. The trooper told him that he had some flares in the trunk of his patrol car and asked if he could juggle them.
The juggler stated that he could, so the trooper got three flares, lit them and handed them to the juggler. While the man was doing his juggling act, a car pulled in behind the patrol car, a
drunk got out, and watched the performance briefly. He then staggered over to the patrol car, opened the rear door and got in.
The trooper observed him doing this and went over to the patrol car, opened the door, and asked the drunk what he
thought he was doing. The drunk replied, "You might as well take me to jail, cause there's no way in the world I can pass that test."
Broken Korina Z!!!

I can not believe it! My worst nightmare has come true. Today I pulled my Korina Z out of the case to tune it up and play and I noticed that the neck joint is cracked! I am sick to my stomach right now! I have waited so long for one of these and I passed up another one after buying this one... and now it is cracked!
At least it came by Fedex, so it won't be so bad to file the insurance claim.... but I am so bummed out.

Anybody else tried coilsplitting their 79's??
by groms on Fri Oct 22, 2004 7:19 pm
The other day I split both pickups on my 79 V. Anybody else tried this on their 79's?
It sure changed it's sound completely. I had no push-pull pot, so I used the tone-control for the splitting, so now I have no tone-controll, but can adjust how much of the other coil I want in the sound-mix.
This is really cool; you can have the twangy singlecoil, or the fat humbucker, and everything in between. I found on the 3-5 setting, you get the best of both; chunky HB, with a slight twang.
The PUPs lost a litte output because of this, but they were so dark, powerful and slightly muddy, that I think it only did them good.
It's worth a try, if you don't mind tinkering.

Its quite beat up and i got it for dirt cheap i just wanted to know if there was any way to stop the crackle that it has when i turn the Knobs. i think it could be dust but i dont know much about the workings of an amp.
Well my brother and sister had their 15 seconds of fame today on CBS at the Alabama-Tennessee football. My brother is a senior at Bama.
Humorous SNL story
by Randall on Sun Oct 24, 2004 1:39 am
Watching SNL tonight and they had Ashlie Simpson on as the musical guest. Well she got a bit embarrassed when they cued up the wrong song for her second song. She didn't know what to do and walked off stage. Her band played along, I think to show they can actually play the song. At the end of the show, when everyone is on stage, she blames her band! If I were in the band, would tell her where to go. I was shocked that she would put the blame on them, when maybe she should be able to actually SING the song, not just sing-along.
Pretty funny, actually.
Randall[/i]
I spent a good part of yesterday looking at Hardtails all over the internet. I'm a deanmaniac after all... It's been too long since I had a USA made Dean in my paws. There was a time when that's all I played. Right now I have an edge bass, and two Korean eVos. The Hardtail Selects are appealing to me, but I'm getting tired of rebuilding everything on my guitars to make them meet muster, ya know? I just wanna play nowadays. The two that Dave at BnT has on the bay are incredible. I gotta sell some of this stuff around here and special order one of my very own, I think. Something over the top like Dizzy's Pimpburst. A one of a kind Hardtail. I've even been coming up with some cool, heavier guitar riffs to justify it. A rock cd may be around the corner. Hmmm, I may just waste today away, deciding how I want it to look. Hmmm.... Gold Top? With pearloid binding? Or, Lake Placid Blue Metallic with the pearloid binding?
CRISS OLIVA
by BULL on Sun Oct 24, 2004 9:36 pm
October 17th 1993 he was killed in a tragic car accident. Criss Oliva was the guitarist of the metal band Savatage. Man this guy was awesome riffs like Randy Rhodes, Michael Schenker and Dave Mustaine. Great clean tones tasteful soloing. They only thing that stop him I feel more popularity was his older brothers haunting vocal style. Savatage never made better albums without his presence. Some of the members are in fact part of the Trans Siberan Band.

Help and tips for a relative new comer to guitars

I need some "how to:" tips on learning guiatar. Please send me anything that can help I need some excercises that will help me with the following, Speed, Solo's and rythm chords, and also picking speed and techniques. More on fret hand techniques. I am worling the best I can but it is harder for us lefties to develop that stuff so I want your best tips and advise don't mention getting a left handed guitar because I am used to a righty. How do I keep my hand from balling up on tight chords and other ideas, don't flame me; just HEEEELLLLLLLP MEEEEEEEE! I am getting better virtically on fingering it is horizontally where I play like a snail.
My musical tastes....
by Lon on Mon Oct 25, 2004 7:48 am
are so far out of whack with the general consensus here. I know there's lots of young guys who are still into the "metal" stuff here. No problem with that (or anyone else's tastes for that matter). Just something I noticed is all. Seems metal rules here, and most of the bands I like right now like 3DD, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Default, Linkin Park, and some of the old stuff like Y&T, heck even James Taylor get ragged on. No problem with that either. 75% of the bands mentioned in threads here I've never even heard of, and when I do seek them out I'm less than impressed. Man I'm just getting old. But there are things in my life that are keeping me young, so all is not lost! Life is good my friends, life is good! End or ramble.
Good things come in pairs

I found a mate for my Hardtail, now my Z has a mate too. I'll also have to get a pic of my pair of Cadillacs.
The one on the right is a Euro Korina Z, stock.
The one on the left is a Korean made Z select that I bought in '99. It has been retrofitted with Bill Lawrence L-350 pickups (Highly recommended!)
Paying homage to the water girl
by Faust on Mon Oct 25, 2004 9:24 am
I was 16 and she was my dream. Now I am 38... and she is still my dream! Even though she was wearing an engagement ring. I guess it was kind of a paradox at the time since I could not have either the girl or the guitar. Now I have a good job and I could probably afford the guitar... but being an old guitar nerd, I still would have a snowball's chance in hell getting anywhere near that girl.
This is my current wallpaper on my computer. Enjoy!
L500XL pickup in my ML
by tnvol on Mon Oct 25, 2004 11:21 am
My L500XL arrived and it sounds awesome in my DOA ML. I have never heard a pickup quite like it. The output is pretty hot and it overdrives the crap out of my amp. Its also very responsive to pick attack and you can get diffent sounds by picking differently. I like it as much as the X2N. Great pickup!
What was your most SNL like moment?
by n-turbo on Mon Oct 25, 2004 4:17 pm
Playing live can be an adventure so I'm sure most of us have had one of those SNL moments. So let's hear em'
To show I can take it, This was my gig from HELL. (Remember kiddies this is why you should play solber)
The band I was playing with earlier this year tuned 1/2 step down with the exception of 3 songs. We always played these 3 songs together, the song names were highlighted on the song list with (ST) before the song name. We got to the first song and I swapped basses, the singer was talking and introuded the song. There was a terrible noise when we started to play. At first I thought I was on the wrong fret, but I wasn't then I thought I had tuned the guitar wrong and as I turned I saw that the guitar that Dave was holding was not the right guitar so I moved down a fret just as Dave realised that he had the wrong guitar and moved up a fret. The gods must have been with us because the next thing to happen was Daves amp fell over.
I pretty much had a good laughf over the whole thing and used the break waiting for the tubes to cool down to double check my tuning and prepare for the next set. That's when things went from bad to well bad. A couple of songs into the next set was NeverAgian, no matter what you think of Nickleback this song is fun to play, well except tonight! We started this song with just drums and then I would come in on bass. Drummer starts OK, I come in OK, Dave comes in early playing "I Want to Rock and Roll all night" , Well he realised the error and started playing the correct song minus a verse. When the night was over he called me outside and asked if I learned anything. My responce never mix coke and vodka
Shortly after this I walked out.
MUSTAINE IS BACK NEW MEGADETH TOUR 2004!

Megadeth: Announce dates for “BLACKMAIL THE UNIVERSE TOUR” and band line-up as new CD ‘THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED’ hits stores; New single and video “DIE DEAD ENOUGH” impact the airwaves
With their new CD THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED hitting stores this week (Sanctuary Records) and its first single and video “Die Dead Enough” impacting airwaves, MEGADETH has announced dates for a U.S. tour. The 22-date trek by the iconic hard rock group kicks off October 23 in Reno, NV and wraps November 20 in Minneapolis, MN. Joining group founder and frontman DAVE MUSTAINE will be Glen Drover (King Diamond/Eidolon) on guitar, James MacDonough (of Iced Earth) on bass and Nick Menza returns to the group on drums. The video for “Die Dead Enough” made its debut on MTV’s “Headbangers Ball” this past weekend and the song is spinning on Active Rock and Rock radio stations nationwide.
Of his touring partners for the “Blackmail The Universe Tour,” MUSTAINE says, “James is a guy with long hair and a lot of tattoos and is an animal on bass. We like that kind of danger on that side of the stage.” As for Drover, MUSTAINE calls him the “perfect fit,” and welcomes back Menza, who was in the group from 1990 through 1997.
After re-releasing eight MEGADETH albums earlier this past summer, MUSTAINE returns with THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED, which Revolver described in a four-star review (October ’04) as “Megadeth’s most vengeful, poignant and musically complex offering since 1992’s Countdown To Extinction…Throw in political themes, apocalyptic lyrics…it’s clear that Megadeth are not just back, they’re paranoid, pissed, and motivated to destroy.”

GREAT TOUR, GO SEE IT IF IT IS IN YOUR NECK-O-THE WOODS!!!!
After our loss to Georgia (the Arkansas Razorbacks loss that is), Mrs. DeanMann, the Little DeanMann and I went to Little Rock to see the Chicago / Earth Wind And Fire tour.
It started out with both groups on stage playing a couple of tunes, then a "NIGHTLY COIN TOSS TO SEE WHO WILL PLAY FIRST" . Then Earth, Wind and Fire played followed by Chicago, then BOTH bands at the end for a ROCKING version of "September" by EWF, then "25 or 6 to 4".
I must say that I may be getting along in years when compared to most of you, but THIS SHOW WAS GGGGGRRRRREEEEEAAAATTT!!! I always have been somwhat of an EWF fan, as well as Chicago, but the TUNES!!!! AWESOME TUNES!!! THESE GUYS CAN ACTUALLY SING!!!! AND REALLY PLAY!!!!!! Which is something I think is becomming less and less important as time goes by.
Earth Wind and Fire had their GROOVE on. EVERYONE UP DANCING IN THEIR SEATS. Chicago, less a dance band, had everyone moving as well.
As a critic, I must say both bands had AWESOME horn sections. Chicago was a little lax in their vocals. I felt they were a body or two short singing backup & playing odds & ends parts. I really want a band to be able to either be as good as the albums, or better. Chicago musically was almost there, but vocally a 97 out of 100. On the other hand, Earth Wind & Fire was DEAD ON.
Interestingly, I never thought of it, but these two bands have TONS in common. BOTH bands had basically the same musical instraments in use. Both had horns (IDENTICAL) both had the typical drums, bass and guitar player, except I think EWF had two or three more bodies on the stage. But all in all, the same instraments, just used them differantly.
Without going on much more and really be long winded, I was impressed. It was a small turnout, but good enough to have a concert hall feel.
Long story short - GOOD SHOW. GO SEE IT. REAL MUSIC BEING PLAYED BY PROFESSIONALS!!!!
I give it 1/2

Worst date story
by Faust on Tue Oct 26, 2004 3:59 am
Alright, I have a story to tell about my worst date ever. I agreed to meet a girl at a club for some drinks etc. She brought a guy "friend" of hers along. I thought it was just a "chaparone" (I probably goofed that spelling!). The band was playing some pretty good tunes and he and I were taking turns dancing with her. Why should I care if she dances with her "friend" right? Well they started sucking face! So I bailed and left them with the bar tab. No guilt here!
What was your worst date?
Rackmount (preferred) delay and chorus units
by Lon on Tue Oct 26, 2004 7:55 am
I'm looking for a couple of rackmount effects to add to my head unit, but since there are about a thousand to choose from I thought I'd ask here for some advice. I went to ebay, but there were just too many to look at for an unexperienced effects buyer like myself. I bought a nice Ibanez digital delay from a local shop, but when it was at my house there was a loud hum that I couldn't get rid of, and it didnt' do it at the shop. Couldn't figure that one out. I was bummed because it was only $25 and sounded great at the shop. Anyway, all I'm looking for is some recommendations for a delay and a chorus. Either rackmount or pedal. Name brand doesn't matter. Thanks.
It's time to learn how to do my own setup
by mcvinyl on Tue Oct 26, 2004 8:38 am
OK the time has finally come for me to learn to setup my guitars myself. I can't keep paying the local guy to set up 5 guitars every 6 months. Can anyone help me with a bit of an idiots step by step guide? I want to be able to set my action & intonation & maske sure I have the right amount of neck relief etc. I have the EVO & Del Sol which are both stop tails, A strat that's string through body, an Axis Sport that's the same and then a Joe Pass Regent that has a trapeze tail piece on a stop tail type bridge. Anyone recommend any good books that might be able to help me?
Thanks

November Vintage Guitar mag
You guys may be interested in the November issue. On the cover where a section called Hot New Gear! is shown, the first mention of what's in there is a Dean Hardtail. The attached picture just happens to be a beautiful blue quilt model. Of course, the writeup inside the mag on the HT (Collector's Edition) is extremely positive and a couple more pics are there.
There's also an interview with Kerry Livgren. Picture of him with his green quilt Hardtail with a Fender strap and he talks about his new custom SG from Gibson. Go figure, he's a gear whore like many of us.
Also, a full page ad for the Collector's Edition Hardtail...the pic with Dean and that flamed redwood top. BTW, does anyone have any idea if that specific guitar is available? If so I'm *seriously* interested in it.

John Peel has gone off the air.
by LewnWorx on Tue Oct 26, 2004 11:39 pm
This is a huge bummer for me. I just got a call from one of our friends in the UK.
Music legend John Peel died in Peru yesterday of a heart attack at age 65.
Many of you may not know who he was, but John was in many cases directly or indirectly responsible for a huge number of the bands you know (and a lot that you don't) getting exposure.
As BBC one's in house DJ, music critic, bandfinder, session producer and musicologist bar none, he had held the post since 1960.
What sucks is that he was a huge unknown in the states, but a fixture in Europe. I got to know his work though my wife. She has a close friend in London who was extremely tight with John (in fact, Ian's place was where John stayed any time he was in London).
John wasn't a musician, but a fan's fan of music. He had an incredible theoretical and historical background knowledge of all kinds of music. He also owned perhaps the largest record collection I've ever heard of, some 200,000+ LP's at last count I heard. Ian once showed us pictures of John's "compound" which was a little house and a farm of quanset hut buildings he kept the immense collection in. John had amassed this collection over the course of his life, and had listened to, and knew the contents of a great deal of it.
I never met the man, but my wife had on a few occasions during her trips to the UK to hang out with Ian and crew, and John made a habit of wishing her a happy birthday each year on the air, which was difficult for us to catch due to time zone and geographic challenges, but Ian always made sure to tape those shows and send them to us.
John took a great interest in all kinds of bands, and when he found one he liked, whether they were signed or not he'd invariably invite them to come hang out on the air with him and discuss thier work.
Many a legendary live performance occured on the air (like "unplugged", but 20 years before anybody gave it a name) and as well as massively in depth discussions of everything music with more artists than most of us can count. Furthermore, John had built his own studio, and would record bands for free. He'd even record signed artists, and for some those sessions would become more interesting than thier primary studio work. As a "producer" John was more hands off than most. The typical "John Peel" session was essentially a transcription of a live performance in a studio setting. Occassionally some of these would even be released on CD by the BBC, and over the years a large number of artists have one or more "John Peel Session" CD's to their credit. The number of groups he's recorded probably numbers over a thousand.
John was directly responsible for the world finding out about bands like the Fall, The Smiths, The Jam, The Cure, New Order, Bauhaus, Happy Mondays, The Ice Cubes, the entire Manchester Scene and countless others (those are just some of the one's I've listened to over the years that you MAY have heard of).
I was lucky enough to spend a week with Ian and several of John's other friends at a cottage out on the moors (close to where an American Werewolf in London was filmed incidentally) a few years back (John was out of country at the time) and got exposed to more phenominal music that I'd never heard of in those few days than I had in the previous 5 years combined. It's odd, but the sad truth is that a good deal of the world's best music never gets heard by the mainstream, and John had sort of made it his life's goal to capture as much of it as possible, and to expose the world to as much as he could.
During that week, I got a huge perspective on the purest sense of the wonder of music in all forms. I also got a good sense of what an incredible guy he must have been.
All I have is the same thing that most who heard him had. The inimitable voice coming over the airwaves as he would introduce us to something new he'd found.
There's going to be a very large void in BBC One forever.
We lost a good one.
I think I'll go home and toss on one of his interviews with Johnny Mars where they spend an hour discussing Jimmy Page, stupid uses of bad scale modes that actually worked in popular songs, the religous politics during certain periods of Gregorian Chant and how that affected the development of vocal harmony styles that are still in use today and why Cromwell's blood stains on the wall of York never completely faded out.
Because that is what he was. It kicked the crap out of any US DJ any day of the week.
Dime with Dean and Krank!
"Former PANTERA and current DAMAGEPLAN guitarist Dimebag Darrell has signed new endorsement deals with Dean Guitars and Krank Amplification, according to a posting at www.VINNIEandDIME.com. Dimebag was endorsed by Dean early on in his career before switching to Washburn, whose product he had used for the past decade."
From Blabbermouth.
KICK ASS!

Soon you will cross a large body of water on a 20 day tour and land in a faraway land that has been a fairy tale to you for the past two years, your homeland of America....stopping in San Diego first as you ride the waves on your civilian headed cruiser of the open seas while your friends and colleagues ride an airjet across the ocean blue. As you reach California you will then embark on a cross country journey eastwards by land that will take you to another place full of mysticism, Texas.
Wow...I'm coming home and riding a civilian contracted boat!!!
And yep, it's ALL true!!!!
You guys won't hear from me after the 17th of November until AT LEAST the 6th of December. See you soon (some of you in person hahaha)

Amp questions
by tnvol on Wed Oct 27, 2004 1:41 pm
First question: What exactly does the Impedance switch on my amp do? Its a Marshall JCM900 High Gain Dual Reverb 100W head. I have looked on several amp pages on the web but to be honest it is kind of confusing to me.
Second question: The amp seems to be losing some of its punch and is starting to sound different. Last night I got no sound at all for a few minutes when I first turned it on, and when I turned it off and then back on, the sound came back but the volume was going up and down and the sound just plain sucked. I just had the tubes replaced about a year ago and it had it cleaned and serviced.
The sound has been going downhill for a couple weeks. Im also getting lots of crackling when i turn the mid and treble knobs. All my fuses are good and my cables are good. Any ideas? Does it sound like it is blown? Should I not play through it till it is checked out by a professional? This is kinda freaking me out because this is one of the best sounding amps I have ever played through and it usually is pretty problem free, unfortunately I know very little about amps.
Just ordered a Vendatta 4.0. Can't wait to get it.
I will then have a grand total of 2 Deans, which is probably about 5 less then most people here have!

Any old schoolers remember 'mind picks'?????
Any old schoolers remember 'mind picks'?????
They were polished stone guitar picks. I remember getting one with my first Dean (1980). They were about $7 each I remember. I couldn't afford more then one. I had to wash dishes in my afterschool job for 6 months just to pay for the guitar.
They were pretty much a gimmick except for one thing - you could get awesome bell tones from tapping the string with this pick.

VX or ML Phantom XT necks

Anyone know if either of these will fit onto my Avalanche? I see the scale is different, but are there any other things I should consider? Will the scale difference screw things up? I have a couple of more chances to finally get my Dean Strat with a decent Dean headstock. Thanks.

A GOOD INTRO FOR THE DEAN SITE WOULD BE DIME STANDING THERE WITH THAT NEW TOBACCO BURST ML OF HIS AND "FLASH" MADE FLAMES BLOWING AND THE BEGINNING NOISE TO COWBOYS FROM HELL SONG (THAT PHASER SOUND) LOOPING AND OVER THE TOP JUST LOOP THE GUYS VOICE EVERY FEW SECONDS WHO SAYS "WERE TAKING OVER THIS TOWN" ON THAT SONG. THAT WOULD BE SWEET IF YOU ASK ME.
What IS this?
by Lon on Fri Oct 29, 2004 12:30 pm
I don't recall seeing a bolt on Caddy with a nice top like this, and this trem. Is this a Tropical? Seems a nice price whatever it is.

Studio question
by tnvol on Fri Oct 29, 2004 2:14 pm
My freinds wife is wanting to make a demo cd with about 7 or 8 songs on it. She would be singing to music tracks that she already has. I noticed that some of you either have studios or work in them. Any idea how much that might cost?
Best endorser?
by Ziggy on Fri Oct 29, 2004 2:57 pm
Let's say YOU are responsible for marketing Dean guitars to the public.
Your goal is to increase the sales figures as much as possible.
You can chose anyone you want, regardless of cost(!) and the artists current endorsements.
We define the market into two main areas:
a) Rock/ metal (Mainly pointies here)
b) All other styles
Which two guitarists would you choose?
Who's hot and who's not?
Now go ahead, spend the dough, and show us you're worth keeping!!
What a difference!!!!
by Stone on Fri Oct 29, 2004 3:26 pm
In case those of you who were contemplating better tuners on your Korean Deans. I just put a set of Sperzels on my EVO SS.
D@MN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This guitar stays in tune SOOOO much better now. I can bend the heck out of the strings and it just stays in tune (strings were typically going flat after an aggresive bend). I was thinking that I would need to upgrade the bridge to a Tones Pro as well........but after the upgrade to Sperzels I don't need to. Also, you should know that you DON"T need to drill the holes out in the headstock to get the sperzels to fit (like you do on some guitars). They just slide right in. It's the best $50 you'll spend on your Korean model Dean.
~M~
Come on in and look around!!!!
They did a virtual tour for my real estate listing. Casa Diz!!! (I put the guitars away before they came).
Pics on the left will give you a virtual tour - thr right are stills.

Thanks to everyone for making this the best online guitar forum! Most of the other ones I have visited (and not signed up on) are total garbage. We have so many dealers and experienced players writing here that I am hooked. Every day I find useful and interesting information and the jokes are funny too.
This is what some of the other ones I have seen look like:
Dude that dude from *** is to kewl

I have abandoned more forums than I can count. I think that the Dean forum is the best. Intelligent people who actually PLAY post here. What a great place!

JEFF WATERS ANNIHILATOR FASTEST/TIGHTEST METAL GUITARIST
by BULL on Sat Oct 30, 2004 1:08 pm
Canada's own Jeff Waters (whom recently almost joined Dave Mustaine and co for Megadeth's current tour. In the furture there gonna do an album together) claims that he's the fastest downpicker in the history of heavy metal. This claims has been posted on Blabbermouth as well as his own website Annihilatormetal.com. If you haven't heard the man play and if you like metal you guys need to check him out cause I have to agree with him on this one.
SCHENKER AND I HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON
ME AND MY SWEETASS DOA ML
CAN YOU SPOT WHAT WE HAVE IN COMMON ?
OH AND INCASE SOMEONE THOUGHT I DID SOMETHING CRAZY LIKE GET A HAIRCUT. HERE'S ME WITH THE ENEMIES GUITAR.HAHAH
SCHENKER STILL NOTHING ON HIS SITE ABOUT NEW DEAN V
by BULL on Sat Oct 30, 2004 4:38 pm
I know its only been about a month since the annoucement of his new DEAN FLYING V GUITAR. His website which he runs has no mention of his endorsement. Schenker's website MICHAELSCHENKERHIMSELF. I know he's been busy, you'd think that he'd at least mention it. Especially when he's got some extra cash coming in from DEAN. So Mike whats the deal?????????/
I'm gonna "relic" my Avalanche (pics)
by Lon on Sat Oct 30, 2004 10:16 pm
Basically, I'm just gonna take it apart and abuse the thing. It's a sweet guitar, but it's too clean! I've wanted a good quality beater guitar for ages now, but all the guitars I see that are naturally beat up probably deserved it. This antique white Zone S is every bit the guitar any of my Fender MIMs were, so it's gonna get the treatment. Wish me luck! I'll post pics in a few weeks when it's back together.

Wondering if you have any current guitar endorsements, and if not I know a guitar company that I have spoken with the owner about you to and he would love to hear from you. Elliot from Dean Guitars. If you're interested. Not sure how you feel about Dean guitars, but I am a big fan of their instruments since Elliott took the helm.
Just figured I'd put that out there since if I could see you two with Deans in your hands I think I'd have a joy overload lol, because not really a big Dimebag Darrell fan but I love his guitars.

Saw some Deans' at West Music in Davenport yesterday. Coupla '79 V's, an eVo Special, and some eVo Phantoms', nothing too intriguing, yet. I told 'em to load up on Hardtail Selects if they wanna make any money, hehehe. The only major concerns I saw was that the nuts on the '79s looked like they were made of toothpaste or caulk. And the particular blue eVo special was very, very bland. The top looked like Luan plywood, and the color was off. When I told them I was 'deanmaniac' they knew what I meant. They didn't have much else to compete with the Deans', mostly Squire junk. They used to be a huge Fender store, I wonder what happened there? I sold my two Genz/Benz 2x12 cabs, and I may sell a few more things. Maybe some 4x12 cabs and my Carvin amp. I need to get $$ for a Usa Hardtail. Also, I want to check out that new Line 6 Pod XTLive thing, anybody got one yet? Just to have for recording and dinking around. A local country act wants me to record/produce a cd for them, so I may have some cash flow soon, hehhe. I Hate that $hit, tho! Why do they always wear those stoopid hats? And sing with that dang fake twang? REEEtarded... Dunno if I could get thru a project like that. Beats selling AMWAY, I guess. Has everyone settled down from the Dimebag whirlwind yet? Looks like it's really important to about 15 people, hehhee!
Dean Hardtail Select and Standards
What's the difference besides the paint and 200 dollar price tag? Or is that It?
ouch - ENGL prices seemed to have jumped quite a bit
http://www.rocksolidamps.com/items.php?CA=8
at least at our good friend Derek's place. Looking like $300 a shot on the heads and even the Z5 pedal is $75 more. Glad I grabbed my RB Edition from the 'Bay when I did and got the pedal from Derek before the prices jumped.
