Neck Swap?

Could bolt-on Deans be generally considered interchangeable in terms of necks and bodies?
Specifically an MLX neck and a new-style baby V body?

I have just purchased #13 of 50 USA TC ML!
by JA Allen on Mon Mar 01, 2004 11:42 am
Lucky 13!!!

This just from my heart, to let you know how I feel.....

I have just purchased the more famous (LOL) #13 of 50 USA Time Capsule ML. I just wanted to let you know, that it is and probably will be my new main guitar. I own quite a few recording/stay home axes, and 4 very stable stage guitars. You can see them all here under "The Axe" area of my site, http://www.tentenland.net/axe/documents/keepitloud.htm
the ML is there also, and without a doubt, this is the one. I love the thing. So strong yet it is so elegant, what a balance of the two!

I purchased it at Russo Music in Hamilton, NJ (http://www.russomusic.com) and they are great and took very good care of it while it was there, it was flawless when I got it. I am not sure but I never got an authenticity certificate, but it's signed at the headstock and that's good enough for me. It plays just....it cant be explained, others will have to try a USA Time Capsule model of their choice themselves and see what I mean!

Thanks Dean!!!! It really is good to see ya doing so well, this guitar....hell, Dean deserves it!

I can't stop buying guitar stuff! Ever since I got my Randall, all I've wanted was more guitar stuff. I spent $200+ on a wah, and now I want a parametric EQ! I don't even know what that does! And I also want a Digitech Whammy, Bill Lawrence L500XL, custom print guitar picks, and so much more stuff! AHH!!!

SUCK KNOB
by huxleysghost on Tue Mar 02, 2004 9:28 pm
(Taken from the harmony-central amp forum)

"Here’s a story that those of you who run sound might find amusing, or even just those of you who are used to playing venues with sound systems.

My band’s drummer, John, is also a sound guy; for several years before we hooked up musically, he had been doing sound for other bands I was in, as well as for touring acts I booked shows for. He’s very good at what he does, and has a pretty massive rig. Anyway, he’s the nicest guy in the world at band practice, at Burger King, or at a gig we’re playing, but when he’s running sound for other bands, he can be pretty crabby. Very little patience for bands who start late or end late. Even less patience for bands who take an encore when they’re the second band playing out of five. Very little patience for singers who ask for more vocals in the monitor while cupping the microphone ball in both hands (feedback, anyone?) In general, just an altogether grouchy sound man. For example, he ran sound once for this seven- or eight piece ska band. One of the trombone players said he needed two mics: one for his horn and one for his backup vocals. Normally at this venue (a 120-seater), John didn’t bother to mic horns at all. Rolling his eyes, John put up a Shure Beta 58 and some AKG condenser mic. “This Shure is for your vocals, and this AKG is for your horn, OK?” he said. “Don’t blow your horn into the vocal mic, because your horn is about 30db louder than your voice and I’m going to have everything mixed properly.” Horn player nods his head. During the second song of the set, apparently this trombonist was set to get a solo. Right before his solo starts, he grabs both mics and pushes them close together, so that the capsules are actually touching. He then blows this fortissimo opening note into BOTH mics. I was sitting at a table in back, by the sound board, at the time. John’s limiters caught most of it, and I STILL had ringing in my ears for two days. At the end of the song, John mutes both of the guy’s mics (and leaves them mute), and basically threatens to ream out the guy’s plumbing with his own horn if he ever pulls that s#%t again. John does this through his talkback mic, which is clearly audible over the monitors. The crowd bursts into laughter, and the horn player goes bright red in the face.

At any rate, for years I had heard John threaten bands with the “suck button.” Bands who were taking too long to set up, or whose members repeatedly refused to follow reasonable directions (please keep that vocal mic away from the monitors!), would be threatened. “Pull that s#%t again, and I’m gonna hit the suck button on you guys!” I took it to mean that he would intentionally make them sound bad, but he never followed through on the threat, so I took it as a vague general warning.

So anyway, a little while back he’s running sound on a four band show. The second band, a Matchbox 20/Train kind of band, has him running 20 minutes behind before they even play a note because their lead guitarist was late. Their allotted set time is 40 minutes, but their last song runs over and by the time it’s done, they’ve played for almost 45 minutes. John says quietly over the talkback mic, “Hey guys, you’re done.” The lead singer says loudly over the vocal mic “Sound man says we gotta get off the stage. We got one more song for you!” as they kick into another soupy jangle-rock tune. John shakes his head at me. Then, the most amazing thing happened. After their “encore,” this band kicks straight into ANOTHER song without announcing it, apparently in the hope that John wouldn’t notice it was a different song.

John leans over to me to be heard over the PA and asks, “Hey, wanna see the suck button?”

“Sure,” I replied. I figured he was going to muck with the levels or just turn them off or something. Instead, he reaches to one of his racks and starts scrolling through patches on his trusty DigiTech unit. Sure enough, he gets to a patch titled SUCK BUTTON. He engages it, and all hell breaks loose onstage. The lead singer and the lead guitarist (who was singing backup), immediately start to sing WAY off key. They try to get back in tune, fail, trail off in mid-line, try again, and start glaring at each other. The guitarist is so distracted by this that he starts muffing the chord progression. If not for the drummer, I think the whole song would have derailed. For the entire four minute duration of the song, I was treated to this icehole band sounding like crap and getting madder and madder at each other. John explained the patch to me; basically it pitch shifts all tracks from the vocal submix up one step, BUT ONLY IN THE MONITORS. So the audience, out in front of the mains, was treated to the sound of two guys trying to get in tune, only to be utterly confused. If they got it sounding right in the monitors, they could tell that something was grossly wrong in the mains. And each of the singers thought it was the other guy who was singing out of tune. I just about died laughing

Euro Custom Select V Part 2.
by mpire on Wed Mar 03, 2004 12:39 pm
My Euro V arrived today, was able to unwrap and tune it at lunch but not much more.

Other than a couple dings in the body (trans blue) it's in really great shape. The neck feels great.

I'll post some pics tonight, going to strip it down polish it all up and slap some new strings on.

Something I didn't see on Lon's pic, it has a face dot at the first fret, is that unusual?

Still shopping for a new head. Played a few more today. The one place has a Marshall jcm 2000 dsl100 used for $699. The new one sounded pretty good (better than the crate blue voodoo 120 and Mesa Single Rect) Any comments on this amp? Gonna bring my Dean and Strat over tomorrow to give it another run. I really want an Engl Blackmore model, but still several hundred dollars short on that one.
Cheap EQ's?

I'm looking for a cheap EQ so I can get some more juice out of my rig. I can't afford a Furman parametric EQ, so I've been thinking about getting a DOD. It doesn't have to be a rack EQ. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should get?

A Joke About The Fine Folks In Canada
by Jan Haaÿer on Thu Mar 04, 2004 8:54 pm
I got this joke the other day and I wanted to share it with all the DOA members from canada.

Two tourists from Ontario were driving through Nova Scotia. As they were approaching Tatamagouche, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the name.

They argued back and forth until they stopped for lunch.

As they stood at the counter, one tourist asked the employee, "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are...very slowly?"

The blonde leaned over the counter and said

Burrrr....gerrrr....Kiiiing"

I hope every one enjoyed this as much as I did

I think by now, most have you have come to know me well enough to realize I am an ML man at heart. For years I have said that Its an ML or nothing at all. On top of this image that I have seem to instilled upon my fellow DOA members, I have never really been much of a fan of Cherryburst. It was a nice color but I really wasn't too thrilled about it.

After a week of ownership I have faithfully concluded that my new 1979 Cherryburst V standard is probably one of, if not the baddest and meanest guitars I have ever owned. What a fine piece of Dean history that I have come to own. I thought it sounded good through my Century but when I got home from work I plugged it into my RG100ES. What a friggin monster. I set the action last night and raised the bridge pickup a little closer to the strings and what a difference it made.

Im gonna take some updated family pics this weekend including this guitar. I have officially entered myself into the V fanclub.

IRON MAIDEN TO REALESE SPECIAL EP
by Original Recipe Ozzman on Sat Mar 06, 2004 1:28 pm
10/02/2004 Iron Maiden release special souvenir EP

In recognition of their highly successful tour and critically acclaimed No 1 international album, IRON MAIDEN thank their fans by releasing a very special CD on 29th March 2004.

'NO MORE LIES' the 7 minute epic from the 'Dance Of Death' album will open the specially formatted and unique Collectors EP CD. Packaged in a silver and red printed box with free Woven Jacquard IRON MAIDEN wristband and 12 page colour booklet the EP celebrates what has been a remarkable year since the band completed recording ‘Dance Of Death’. Iron Maiden hit the road in May 2003 and have subsequently played to 1.5 million people in 28 countries across 4 continents along the way. From headlining every major rock festival in Europe to selling out football stadium dates of their own, the band have continued to show they continue to be one of Britain's greatest rock exports.

The EP features special mixes of ‘Journeyman’ and ‘Paschendale' plus a live video of the band’s performance of 'No More Lies' from the sold out recent Dance Of Death World Tour. The length of the EP (over 30 minutes of music) and packaging contents will exclude the release from any charts. However, as manager Rod Smallwood explained, 'This release is as a special thank you to all our fans in celebration of an amazing year. The album dominated the international album charts* (debuting at Billboard’s International chart at No 1) so we have nothing to prove, except that great music gets recognition from the public, despite the prejudice of mainstay Radio and TV.”

To coincide with ‘No More Lies, The Dance Of Death Souvenir E.P’ EMI Records release the ‘Dance Of Death’ album on DVDA with 5.1 surround sound specially mixed by producer Kevin Shirley and Steve Harris. For the Audio buffs the DVDA portion contains the album in full crystal clear Hi-definition 24-bit/96 Khz glory while fans who own DVD 5.1 home cinema set ups will be able to enjoy the album in Surround-sound in Dolby Digital or DTS. Listening to the album in this format takes it to a whole new experience level especially with tracks such as ‘Paschendale’ taking on epic proportions.

Also included on the DVDA as a bonus are two full length videos of the singles 'Wildest Dreams' and 'Rainmaker', both directed by Howard Greenhalgh and which can also be viewed accompanied by full 5.1 audio.

The band have just finished their 'Dance Of Death World Tour', which included nine exceptionally successful British Arena shows to ecstatic fans and critics, finishing with a sold out show at Earl's Court, and playing to over 90,000 fans in the UK alone.

* Dance of Death album chart entries:-
No 1 Italy, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Czech Republic;
No 2 UK, Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia.
No 3 France, Spain, Norway, Poland, Hungary, Argentina, Austria.
No 4 Japan, Portugal, Belgium, Iceland.
No 5 Canada.
No 10 Denmark.
No 11 Holland
No 12 Australia
No 18 USA.

Edge Q4 Rebuild Project.
by mpire on Sun Mar 07, 2004 12:52 pm
Picked up this Q4 a couple months back, it was in pretty bad shape to say the least...

ImageImage

First job was to get rid of the "paint job" on the back and try to do something about the crack in front.
Unfortunately the crack ran through the quilt veneer, so that all came off too...

ImageImage

Several coats of Tung oil later, this morning I put it all back together.

ImageImage

Unfortunately, I'm still not getting any signal out of it... I figure it has something to do with the preamp circuit, although the battery box connection seems like it might be flakey too (sometimes reads in the mV rather than a solid 9V). At worst I should be able to wire a pickup directly to the output jack since they're technically passive.

Looking For Guitar!
by Jan Haaÿer on Mon Mar 08, 2004 7:02 pm
A co-worker is looking for a nice but cheap guitar and has asked me to try and find him a deal. So my question to all of dean land is:

Anyone got a used guitar, Dean or other for sale?
OK, so here we go. Pup rewiring anyone?
by Mostacholi on Mon Mar 08, 2004 10:02 pm
HI! I'm getting initiated on this forum and also with Dean guitars. I just purchased a new hardtail (will add pic soon) which I should receive right on time for the weekend.

I am wondering if anyone out there has done any coil tapping or other pickup wiring modifications on a dean hardtail. I am curious to know what the experience has been like with the sound.

I own a LesPaul Studio Gothic which I rewired with one of Jimmy Page's wiring mods. It has an SD Alnico Pro II in the neck and an SD Custom 5 in the bridge. I love the sound of the rhythm pickup, but I am still figuring out the bridge (playing around with tone/vol and push-pull buttons).

Anyway, I am glad I rewired the Les Paul. The sound variety I get is very interesting. Single coil sound is nice too. The only complaint is that the DP/DT push-pull pots available on the market are a major piece of crap in quality.

I don't think I will be rewiring the hardtail any time soon, but if anyone has done it let me know!

Thanx.
Only took 2 years but I finally got one...

I just listened to "New Millenium Cyanide Christ" by Meshuggah and developed a major head ache. WTF are those guys thinking? I like off time and syncopation as much as the next guy, but holy hell. The riffs and beats sound almost completely random.

And then just to top it off, they have to use 8 string guitars. Argh!

OK, Now I have a bit of a quandry here. I have been told that the Avalanche One is a pretty good axe. Comprabile with a mexican strat. I was thinking of buying one as I got an excellent price. But I seem to hear on these forums that maybe they are more of an entry level git. As this will tap me out as far as buying guitars for awhile I would like more opinions on the avalanche one not the j or such. Sometimes I need that single pickup sound that the Evo cant give me even with the coil tap. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Question

FIVE years for Lifeson ?
by Bernt on Tue Mar 09, 2004 5:44 pm
From Classic Rock Magazine

The Rush guitarist and his son may not get off lightly. Last week a Florida Court tried a local family doctor for battery upon a law enforcement officer, found him guilty and sentenced to two years in jail.
Fifty-year-old Lifeson may have a clean criminal record, but he faces the more serious charge of aggrivated battery on a law enforcement officer. If proven, the crime carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison.

Rush lining up a 30th anniversary wourld tour that kicks off in North America in June and comes to europe in September.

It's uncertain how Lifeson's problems might affect those plans !!

Wah pedal help

Hey all,

I might buy a wah pedal off Dana to fix in my electronics class, but we're not sure if the pot is busted. He says he can get a sound out of it. So the PC board couldn't be busted, or can it? And just for fun, I took the back off my Cry Baby From Hell (I was looking for gremlins, that wah can make some weird sounds!). There's not much in there!

UNOFFICIAL DOA CONTEST!!!! (WINNERS ANNOUNCED!!!!)
by Original Recipe Ozzman on Wed Mar 10, 2004 7:56 pm
Well hello there folks! The manic voices in my head have been at tribal confrence lately, and we have come up with a grand idea to liven up the DOA, and a nifty chance to win a set of d’addario XL 0.10’s, 5 dunlop tortex picks, or a BRAND NEW CAR!!! Well…. Maybe not that far but, I digress… anywho… What this contest will be is a guitar designing contest using the Kisekae guitar modeling software, to design one of the following models of guitar:

- tele (uscg or regular)
- strat (uscg or reg.)
- Ibanez rg
- Ibanez JEM
- Gibson Les Paul
- Gibson SG
- Jackson Soloist
- Jackson Randy Rhoads model
- USCG Wolfpack (basically an EVH model…)
- Yajima String Works TSUBASA

I know people, I know… there are no deans in this list… but as far as I can see… there is no Dean guitar modeling software available for free ANYWHERE, so, I decided to make with what we had, so, why don’tcha just think of em as all deans, just new models eh?

Moving on, in the contest, entrants will have the chance to make 3 guitars, one for each of the following scoring methods:

- originality (a trans burled redwood RR model for instance.)
- outrageousness (new radical ideas, much like originality but more extreme, now note this, this does not mean you can just make something like a strat with 40 humbuckers all over, and a bigsby on the headstock, the guitars must appear to be functional)
- traditional (a more traditional approach which attemps to create what the guitar might look like right off of the show room floor, vintages with the “relic” feature on are also accepted.)

There are some more rules unfortunately, I shall now list them:

- you can only use the default colors and wood options offered in the KISEKAE default (basically, you can’t use graphics on your guitars, wouldn’t be fair to those who cannot figure out how to do that… *cough cough* DAVE *cough cough*.)
- you cannot use any photo editing software on your entry such as photoshop, paint, and the like. (same reason)
- ALL PICTURES MUST BE CROPPED!!!

Now you must be asking yourself, “how the hell do we use this contraption, and when we do get it to work, how, and to whom do we send the pics of guitars?” well folks, let me tell you. First, what you are going to want to do (if you haven’t already used the KISEKAE software,) is read the FAQ, HOW TO hints section, available at this link, http://www.nymphusa.com/kisekae/FAQe.asp . then once you get to know the software an use it, you’ll want to know how to take a picture off of it, and get it ready to email or PM, well… what you want to do, is center the guitar in the page using scroll and the like, and then hit the “print screen” key on your keyboard. It is the little key above the “insert” and “delete” keys and next to the number keypad. Then, once you have done that, you will then want to open up your Paint program, right click, hit “paste” crop the picture, save it as “DOA CONTEST ENTRANT” (all in caps) then you will want to attach it to an email, and shoot it to me at ozzman2289@yahoo.com or LINK it in a PM and shoot it to me that way. (email preferred) I shall then save ALL images to separate folders with your screenames on them, and when the contest is up, I will send them to the 3 judges we have set aside to view and give a rating from 1 to 10 on each guitar, 10 being the highest, and 1 being plain crap. Our judges are Steve, “TransblueZ”, Mike “mike”, and Joe “ragnut” now I am sure these fine men are impartial, and won’t take sides, but, I am sure that they WILL take any and all bribes. (large bills preferred) they will then send their ratings to me on each guitar, to lil old me, who will then print them out on as piece of paper, and hold them 3 days, or until the money transfers clear, and then post them on the board…. There will be a winner and a runner up in each category, the winner will get a set of D’ Addario XL 0.10 strings, and the runner up, will receive a nifty internet plaque that I will make up in powerpoint or some other nifty program…

In addition, there will be two other special awards that I myself will decide and award, those two are

- best paint job
- best overall creative idea

these winners will each get 5 Jim Dunlop Tortex picks, furnished at my own expense in the guage of their choice.

So in closing, thecontest starts today, March 10th, and will close on Wednesday, March 24th, at 8:00 PM eastern time. The winners will be announced approximately a week after that, and the awards will be shipped as soon as I get my lazy arse to the store to buy the stuff.

amp question... need you're professional help
by kurioskurion on Thu Mar 11, 2004 10:37 pm
hey fellow dean guitar lovers! I need some help. I don't know much about amp and effect set up and I know all of you do.

I just inherited my first full amp. I have been playing on my little 15 watt vox practice amp this whole time.. you must remember, I'm an acoustic player more than an electric player.

But anyway, my brother in law basically gave me his old old peavey classic tube amp. i believe it's a 50 watt with two 10 inch speakers???

Here's my question. there are 4 inputs on the front. one labeled bright (which I think sounds best with my acoustic plugged in or just straight no effected sound) one labeled 'A', one labeled 'B', and one labeled 'auto mix'

it also has a foot pedal with four switches, "selector" "combiner" "reverb" & "phase".. i've figured out the phase and reverb.. duh.. and I've also figured that the "selector" changes from input "a" to "b" and vise versa.. I figure that the "combiner" mixes "a" & "b"....

How do I hook my guitar into both imputs?? I'm guessing it would be nice to set up my guitar through 1 input to be clean and straight.. the other input through my effects pedal.. then I can switch on the fly between effects and such or even combine more than one effect. But how do I get 1 guitar into 2 inputs? do I need a box or something.. or am I looking at this the whole wrong way..

Thanks for your help!

Stolen from the Carvin forum:

A Scottish old timer in Scotland, in a bar, talking to a young man.

The Old Man says, "Lad, look out there to the field. Do ya see that fence? Look how well it's built. I built that fence stone by stone with me own two hands. I piled it for months."

"But do they call me McGreggor-The-Fence-Builder? Nooooooo... "

Then the old man gestured at the bar. "Look here at the bar. Do ya see how smooth and just it is? I planed that surface down by me own achin' back. I carved that wood with me own hard labour, for eight days."

"But do they call me McGreggor-The-Bar-Builder? Nooooooo..."

Then the old man points out the window. "Eh, Laddy, look out to sea...Do ya see that pier that stretches out as far as the eye can see? I built that pier with the sweat off me back. I nailed it board by board."

"But do they call me McGreggor-The-Pier-Builder? Noooooooo..."

Then the old man looks around nervously, trying to make sure no one is paying attention and whispers:

"But ya f*** one goat..."

I heard it on the news yesterday, terrible, i just read there's 198 people killed and over 1400 wounded....

I just wanted to express my condoleances to the people of Spain.

There's no word yet on who did it but it was either Al -Qaeda or the ETA, both organisations don't deserve the air they are breathing...i hope the ones who did will be brought to justice, though of course there's no punishments for a deed like this.

Help with my amp
by NickM on Fri Mar 12, 2004 9:44 pm
Hey all,

Today I was playing my amp at 6 or 7 on the OD channel, and right now it's humming really loudly at low volumes. I don't know what I did. I've played it past 7 before, and it was always fine after. What's broken, and is it expensive to fix? I'm on a really tight budget. I'm so pissed right now.

Thanks

i've got a crate glx 212 right now but it sucks more than a hooker at frat party. distortion sounds like like crap, but my beloved jackhammer pedal takes care of that for me. cleans sound ok but when turned up it gets really glassy sounding with lots of treble bite.....turn it up a little more and i start to get preamp distortion.

point being, i'm looking to trade in for a fender twin reverb combo or maybe a halfstack. any suggestions?

A need for y'alls opinions...
by Coyote on Sun Mar 14, 2004 2:32 pm
Hey, guys. I'm thinking seriously about getting an Electric/Acoustic 'tar to do some gigs and I want your opinions. I've heard great things about Performers (If that's what I chose, I'd probably get a DSE, it looks beautiful here on the site.) but the new Tribal acoustic with the barbwire looks beautiful. It's hard to choose, so I figured I'd ask the experts! So.. do I go with the Performer? Or wait it out and spring for the Tribal?

i was looking in a pawn shop and they had a red dean hollywood z there. It was in alright condition but the nut was broke on the low e string. it is a minor thing, 50 for a repair, but i was wondering how much is a fair price. It has an almost floyd rose type trem and dual humbers, it is red, and the headstock is shaped diffrent then most deans. Anyways if any of you could help me out please post, and thanks for reading.

Dean ML-X
by Himi Jendrix on Sun Mar 14, 2004 6:31 pm
Heya,

Due to circumstances will I probably be moving alot between two locations all throughout the next few years. Since I really lke the idea of dragging a guitar all through the country, I am thinking of getting a second, cheap, guitar.

Now I had more or less these 'demands':

-Not more then #250
-Fixed brigde. Else a standard tremolo. No floating stuff or anything.
-Either triple single-coils, or double humbucker (HSH is ok as well).

The music I is mostly 60s and 70s stuff, Hendrix, Zeppelin etc. The typical blues/rock classic-rock stuff. At first I was looking at the Dean Avalanche Zone S. I already have the humbucker version, and this would complement it well. I like the Dean Avalanche series better then the MIM Fenders, and I never dared to try the more expensive Fenders due to their pricetag.

However, by chance I stumbled into the Dean ML-X on this site. Fixed Bridge, decent tuners, double humbuckers. Looks great to me, and is really dirt-cheap. Now my question is:"Is the ML-X a decent guitar for non-metal players?" The guitar will be in a rather dangerous place, and I know people will probably sit on it or spill beer over it, so I really am not looking for an expensive guitar. I'm also more or less a beginner, so I only need a 'decent' guitar that plays well.

Go for the ML-X? Zone-S? Another Dean? Another brand? Help!

Pickup swap
by Thor Malleuson on Mon Mar 15, 2004 3:10 pm
I did a pickup swap this weekend in the '79 V. I replaced the neck pickup with a Seymoure Duncan SH-2n (the Jazz) and the bridge pickup with the SH-13 (Dimebucker). The swapout was a breeze and the new pickups sound fantastic! Before the swap I was going to get a new amp head (I currently use a Marshall AVT150H) as I wasn't that pleased with the sound. It has plenty of gain, just not the sound I was looking for. With the new pickups I now think I have a few more miles left in that Marshall (although an ENGL Powerball is close on the horizon).

I was worried a little that the Dimebucker would sound "brittle". Not that I am after DBD's tone, I just wanted something that had a hot output without sounding muddy and I didn't want to get another EMG-81. This is a really nice pickup! Nice chunky tone with a wee bit of mid scoop. I've had the SH-2n in other guitars (Jacksons) and really loved the tone I would get for soloing. And now it is back!

Now I know there will be some grumblings as to why I didn't go with an L-500? The price is right, but the availability was lacking (I didn't want to wait a month and a half). Too, I got a pretty good deal on the Dimebucker (there are a couple of auctions on eBay right now). Now I just need to get rid of that cheesy signature silk screen.

The stock pickups have no markings on them. Who made them? What model are they? If anyone wants them, I'll let both go for $15.00. Otherwise I'll probably just throw them away.

These first few are serial number shots, so bear with me, the last being the SBML, ser. # E 070137, the second the Faded Denim V, ser. number 03-00598 (USA Exotic)

Image

One of Chris (Ski) trying to take a headstock serial number shot, accidentally hitting the delay on the cam, then turning said cam on himself, only to have it flash in his face Laughing

Image

The final headstock serial number shot, this one is of the white ML 79 (because I still have not recieved the SBML from DINASTY Joe yet), serial number E 100149

Image

Careful, you might lose an eye with this glorious family shot on my bed...talk about a threeway Laughing

Image

Another one of the same threesome, only the camera was held sideways (blame the quality of the photos on the photographer, as Chris seems as well used to a camera as he is to a guitar)

Next up, my John Wayne shot...for Hans and Bernt!

Image

And my Johnny Cash (if he would have worn fatigues) impersonation

For Hans, Bernt, and Dave (B&T), CHEERS!

And last but not least, the biggest Fender/Gibson junkie I've ever known gets his hands on a real axe, though he still refuses to convert, it is really hard to get him to put down the axe!
This is for Steph and her parents, who wanted a pic of Peter...well I have one of him playing my Faded Denim V!

Image

Thank you for putting up with my bantering, but I also know I'm the biggest cryer for pics, so here I am living up to my own standards, however there are still more guitars incoming, just so ya know!

Cheers, and I hope you enjoy the pics as much as I enjoy playing and owning these quality axes!
A solution to the "how many guitars" coolness fact
by Dischord on Tue Mar 16, 2004 7:37 am
I have resolved the issue, with startling results...

0 guitars is the most cool you can be, and I will explain!

A person with 0 guitars never suffers GAS, therefore the ladies aren't offended by his smell, and ergo he is the essence of coolness as we all know that the coolness brings the ladies...

A person with 1-9 guitars is moderately cool, and I fall within this category at least for the time being, though when all of my geets arrive I will be bumped into the next category. This is the person who suffers from GAS occasionally, but is generally able to control his baser urges.

A person with 10-19 guitars is generally the uncool guy with cool attributes. This person cannot control his baser urges yet constantly is battling (or has not the means) to do so, ergo GAS does not yet fully control his life.

A person with 20-29 guitars has no life, is a compulsive GASSER and has lost all coolness because as they relieve their GAS they simply have the means and such to create MORE GAS, and spread it to others...

And the final category, is the BRAVE DAVE, aka PLONKER category. This individual (individuals) GAS so badly that I would warn the Mrs. to install lead shielding all through the house, because sooner or later the GAS will get so bad, that this person explodes from the pressure, which will be the equivalent of a night in Nagasaki in 1945!!!

At any rate, love your guitars, and don't get caught asleep with it cradled in your arms like I did by my roomies...they now talk to me about inappropriate relationships with inanimate objects, but I simply reply that this axe shows me more love and attention than my ex wife has for the past two years, soooooooooooooooooo!

HEHEHE, have a great day!!!

OK - why sanding off a poly finish is NOT fun!!!
by Mike9 on Tue Mar 16, 2004 1:56 pm
Jeeze-O-Pete (not you Pete) I got a gorgeous neck yesterday - killer flame maple, ebony fretboard, MOP inlays, 6100 frets & an LSR roller nut. Only problem was the "Legend" decal on the headstock - you know under the clear coat. No Problem I say and got out the "Citri-Strip" - no dice all it did was shine it up. OK so I say to myself "self looks like it's time to sand - how bad can it be?" so out comes a pack of 220 Garnet paper and my finest blocks. Three whole sheets and an hour and a half later I have the freakin' headstock clean - no bull this poly stuff is tough!!! So - if you ever need to strip a poly finish off a guitar better eat your Wheaties!!! Laughing

Please only sign up if you are really motivated as the involvement on our part is substantial and we want to choose members that will get pro-active.

When I came back from Florida my home PC totally broke down!
It didn't even start up....

I couldn't get it to work I suspect my power supply is fried.

'Stinks big time but my PC was very old, like 6 years, it was a Intel celeron 333 Mhz with 6,4 Gb harddisc HAHAHAH!

but it still worked fine and did everything I wanted to do.

Anyway I ordered a new PC, can't wait to get it, I ordered it via my work it's a DELL.

HAHHA I think I'll experience some big dramatic performance increase, it's a Pentium IV 3,0 Ghz with HT technology, 120 Gb HDD with 8 MB buffer, 17" TFT flatscreen, 512 MB RAM (thought about upgrading to 1024), 128 MB GeForce video and Soundblaster Live!
I also get teh extra speakers with subwoofer and the wireless keyboard and mouse and of course a 8x DVD-RW burner and a DVD player...

WWOOOOHOOOOO I can't wait....I am gonna convert all my old metal video's to DVD now!

"David Letterman":

"The presidential campaign is really heating up. George
Bush, his campaign is really doing much, much better, and he's
shot right up in the polls since he captured Martha Stewart."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Jay Leno":

"And the Bush administration is under fire for hiring
actors to pose as reporters in video segments praising his
Medicare law.... in other words people think they're watching
the news but it's really the Bush administration talking, kind
of like Fox News."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Jay Leno":

"President Bush was out touting his economic record in Ohio
last week. Now this is a state that lost 225,000 jobs since
Bush took office. If Bush wants to tout his record he should do
it somewhere where the Bush economy has actually created jobs,
like India or Thailand or China."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also from Jay Leno:

"John Kerry said today he wants to debate President Bush
once a month. Hey good luck, if Bush couldn't make it to the
National Guard once a month, he's not going to show up for
this."

by BTMN on Wed Mar 17, 2004 5:29 pm
OK so I set out to do 2 things today.
A) Take a couple photobooks and some 8x10's of my shots from The DOA 3 to the folks at Armadillo.
B) See the natural finished Z I so lusted after while at DOA3.

Missions accomplished with fringe benefits to boot.
I took a nice 8x10 of Elliot playing Bass and 2 8x10 shots of Michael Batio in simple frames for hanging in the offices. I asked for Jon Puhl when I dropped them off cause I knew he would show me the guitar. Boy, did he. I was to nervous to plug it in and I had come unannounced so I wasn't able to play it with an amp. I really would like to get that guitar, to bad it is here at a cash poor time. That lead me to mention my offer of "if you ever need a photographer" again to Jon in hopes of turning my skills into that guitar. Especially after having seen the guitar again and know how much TC's go for.
Jon then took me over to see half a dozen Spalted Maple V's that Pete(r) had been photographing in the lil studio they have right there. They got a great photo set up, Flash units, backdrop, and computers YUMMY!!! Missed the camera they use but I was to busy looking at the V's and the Beautiful Hardtails they had been shooting. There is a Natural Finsh Quilt top Hardtail in the Artist Room WOW!!! Dont think they need my help but if they do I would jump at the chance to work with such great gear. Guitar and photographic. Since my main Photo skill is live action, maybe an artist in concert or clinic would be of more use to them. Who knows how this could end up.
Couple of those Spalted V's were really sweet. 1 was like Spalted Birds-eye! It was Bas add! Shocked Another had a counter chevron V to the spalting, that one was a lot like the Z Lon has in his avatar.

Dean Warranty - void or not?
by G-Man on Thu Mar 18, 2004 10:43 pm
Given this line from the Dean warranty page concerning voiding your warranty-

"Any Instrument modified after original shipment from the Dean MI Factory"

Which of the following voids your warranty:

1. Changing out/modifying the nut
2. Changing out the bridge
3. Pickups change
4. Changing tuners
5. Messing with any of the electronics

I'm thinking 2,3,4,5 but not 1. Am I wrong on this?

Just curious - thanks

What do u look for in a guitar?
by sandwich23 on Fri Mar 19, 2004 1:47 pm
When purchasing a guitar what qualities do u guys and girls look for? And how important are some qualities rather than others?
For example I most importantly judge the way it plays - the action and fret feel along with the shape of the neck and fretboard wood. I prefer unfinished maple necks and fretboards, but also love ebony or nice rosewood. Next comes the sound, it needs to sound rich, warm and hot(insert EMG81 here). Then I want it to be blanced and comfortable and I want it to look good and take a beating without going of tune(insert Floyd Rose tremolo here). Wait a minute that should be number one! It's gotta stay in tune or else it's just aggrivating and embarrassing. If a guitar doesn't meet these qualifications it's not for me. What do u think?

PS. It's gotta be made in the USA, my only exception is my Dean '79 Z, it's a wedding present. It's Korean made, but very nice indeed.

ID on Dean Headstocks
by wstoll on Fri Mar 19, 2004 7:06 pm
Can you help me ID the headstocks in this picture. Dave from B&T was trying to get this into my head, before I saw them. The one on the right is a DOA Caddy, I believe this is a Series II. The one on the left is a MIK Caddy. Is this a Series III ? The one an the right is about 1/2 inch wider, point to point.

Avalanche 7 string
by Lon on Sat Mar 20, 2004 3:19 pm
Played my first Av 7 stringer today at GC and was really impressed. It was used and very plain looking, but I was really impressed with the neck. The frets were nice and smooth up and down the neck, and it actually had a really nice sound to it. First one I'd ever seen. Wasn't quite sure what to do with the extra string, but it had a good sound to it. Razz

VENOM Announce New Lineup - Mar. 21, 2004

British black metal pioneers VENOM have revealed the details of their new lineup and upcoming recording/touring activities. Joining bassist/vocalist Conrad "Cronos" Lant and drummer Antton is the latest addition to the group's ranks, American guitarist Mykus.

Commented Cronos: "I have chosen the most talented and deadliest of all the musicians who've ever been in this band to work with."

The new tracks are said to be "very much in the vein of the early VENOM — ferocious, raw and deeply Satanic, with a 21st century production and 25 years of experience. Look out disbelievers, this is VENOM at their most dangerous and hostile!"

VENOM, who are in the process of negotiating a new recording deal, are currently recording some tracks for their web site, which will be webcast directly from the "Updates/Music" section as a test, before uploading some new video footage of the band using the latest streaming multi-bit-rate technology. Several live shows are planned later in the year as well.

VENOM's last studio album, "Resurrection", was released in 2000.

Hall of Fame
by Rex Herring on Sun Mar 21, 2004 11:20 pm
Just watched the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" induction on MTV tonight. Always fun watching Keith Richards trying to speak. The only one I wasn't ok with was Prince getting in, there are so many others more deserving of the honor that have been rocking longer. He can play a pretty mean guitar but "Rock", not for me. But that's just my 2 cents worth.

Who do you think needs to be in there?
Need advice (before friday!)
by NickM on Mon Mar 22, 2004 2:13 am
Hey all,

I'm seeing Metallica on Friday, and I was wondering, who should I go with? I could go with one person, who is sometimes a dick, but I know him better than the other guy I know, who is probably just going to stand around at the show with a hoodie on and not do anything. And the person who is sometimes a dick will probably stand around too, and not do anything. But I know that guy better. What should I do?

Ebay scam emails
by mpire on Tue Mar 23, 2004 11:29 am
I've had this a couple times now....

Anyone gets an email seemingly from ebay (suspension@ebay.com). Don't open it, it's a spoof that contains a link to take you elsewhere and from what I can tell will then open a popup that will attempt something malicious.

If anyone did that, I recommend running adaware and a full virus scan.

Jet video
by CherryBurstV on Tue Mar 23, 2004 5:50 pm
By now I'm sure everyone has seen the "Are you gonna be my girl" video from Jet. By the way the whole cd is excellent. Anyway, the one guitar player, at first glance, looks to be playing a Gibson V. Upon closer examination, the body looks to be a burst of some color. It's hard to tell due to the video being black and white. I'm not aware of Gibson making a burst color V. Could this be some sort of FrankenDean? Dean body with a Gibson neck? I mean it really looks like a Dean body. Hardware, no pickguard, etc. Look closely the next time you see that video.

Dizzy is very nervous!!!
by DizzyDean on Tue Mar 23, 2004 10:01 pm
There was auction last week on Ebay for an amp I wanted. I saw it almost immediately when it was posted and asked a few questions. Ebay subsequently pulled the ad due to non compliance with thier listing policies. The seller and I completed the deal off Ebay. He has over 80 positive feedbacks, I checked his name and address and it checked out through a google people search, I spoke to him on the phone - everything checked out so I sent a TON of cash via paypal!

He sent me a Fedex tracking number - complete with a copy of the Fedex web page he used to send it- but the tracking number comes up invalid!! So I call Fedex and they say there is no way there is anything in the system under that number. Uh oh!! So I e-mail the guy back, haven't heard anything. If I don't hear from him by tomorrow, guess I'll call him.

Even if I had gone through Ebay - the most you are covered for is $500 - and try to even get that. I have a friend who did and Ebay never paid out!!

I'm sure everything is OK, but man, when you do a high dollar deal on the internet, it sure makes you nervous.
Anyone see Prince LAY IT DOWN on the hall of fame?
by sandwich23 on Wed Mar 24, 2004 1:15 am
Just watched Prince, yes Prince, absolutely shred on lead guitar along with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn doing george Harrison's While my Guitar Gently Weeps. He busted out all the sweet licks and great vibrato! All on a Tele that he just threw in the air and let smash a few minutes ago. Unless he had two identical flame killer orangish tele customs. I'm serious, he was great. He played a bunch of his stuff earlier in the show and it was sweet also, but in that last jam he tore it up, and everyone knew it!
After that Kid Rock embarrassed us all with some kinda cover tune. Oh well, Prince was Shred Royalty!!

Avalanche arrivial
by Kragax on Wed Mar 24, 2004 7:03 am
Well, the avalanche one I bought arrived Monday. I has the worst strings on it I have ever seen. I think they are "blue steel". There is conciderable fret buzz on the upp three strings but the action is so low that adjusting that out after I put a set of boomers on should be no problem. Other than that this is a sweet little axe it doesn't compare to my Evo special but I bought it for a specfic purpose that it will be fine for. Nice Transblue finish.(Igotta get a digital camera). The best part is it is an Avalanche One, three months old and I bought it of a guy that gave up trying for 100.00 hehheh. Laughing

Well I'm down here through Saturday for a software development Seminar.

Since it takes almost as long to fly as it does to drive, I drove..

And that means:

NO LUGGAGE REQUIREMENTS!

Yessir. Got my 25th TC Caddy right here, the VG88, and Logic running on the lufly G4 TiBook. Hell with the headphones going it's almost like being at home in the studio and the entire rig fits in my laptop bag.

This is the way to travel.

Friday Night I'm getting together with a buddy from NY who I haven't seen in 10 years who moved down here, then on saturday it's on to Dana's for an impromptu jam/guitar photo op/soldering clinic.

Somebody else did a thread on "Dream Jobs", well with travel like this, I'm living it.

=)

I'm off to go make noise, then a bitchin barbeque dinner banquet keynote speech thing.

Guitar Hoe?
by BLOYD on Wed Mar 24, 2004 7:17 pm
Image

I’ve heard a few comments hear and there about guitar brand loyalty. Every time this issue comes up people refer to Joe Perry as the…ugh, ugh, (clears throat) guitar hoe dog, (about how many different brands of guitars he plays). It made me think of this image of him…I’ve seen a lot of this same image but with different guitars in hand…I guess I should have posted a few but you can find 'em if you search.
I have my own opinion on this and am kinda torn. I Really feel I should have a propensity toward a handful of guitar makers but when I really think about it…if I had the money and long standing reputation of Joe Perry I’d probably be a guitar hoe too…
What do you think...?

We had an awesome time shredding and hashing out metal classics like Seek and Destroy, Four Horsemen, Disposable Hereos, Creeping Death, Iron Man, Paranoid, Crazy Train, Rock u Liike a Hurricane, Wrathchild, Number of the Beast, The Trooper, Medusa, and on and on and on. by Mike9 on Thu Mar 25, 2004 7:06 pm
I picked up one of these after hearing about them from my teacher. Got it for a very good price on eBay. Cool backing machine with audio track, recording, effects, the whole nine yards. Has 200 preset songs in 13 genres, 200 preset styles in 13 genres, has 128 instruments, & two pages of drum kit options. You can assemble quite a variety of band sounds. Change tone, tempo, key, effects on the fly so you can jam, record, play back, etc. You can recored an extra 32 minutes on a 64mb memory card. Use it as a drum machine, backing machine composing machine, I think it's gonna take me a minute to figure out what all it can do. Confused

I got it to have something to practice with and I think it'll help make more sense out of what I'm practicing. Cool

by transblueZ on Fri Mar 26, 2004 5:13 am
A neat little trio I ran across at work this evening.
A drummer, keyboardist, and a guy playing a WarrGuitar

Did a little reading it's a 12 string touch (?) guitar. Left hand does the bass line and right hand does the guitar and solo's. Sort of like a stringed keyboard. Pretty cool - they do a decent attend at a Zappa tune, then an original.

After many, many, auditions - Ezra Stone finally has a drummer!

The CD is coming along great (now that I finally have this mixing thing down) and should be ready by the first week of May. Our CD release will be a show with metal singing legend Rob Rock. Rob is a super guy and fellow Central Florida resident. Our first show with Rob was with the two of us supporting German power metalers EdGuy. But I digress.

Ezra Stone is once again a fully functional unit and I couldn't be happier. Very Happy

Ziggys DIY project
by Ziggy on Fri Mar 26, 2004 9:13 am
As some of you know, I'm currently restoring my house (built 1913), and my latest project is to convert a little room upstairs to a safe retreat for me and my guitars.

The hous had severe water damage to it (we didn't discover that until we had bought the house), and getting rid of the damaged construction parts was a major undertaking. The room I'm restoring now is placed just below where the water leakage had done the most of the damage.

I had to replace major parts of the construction enclosing the that room. At one critical point last summer, my house look like someone had taken a big bite of it. The roof and wall was removed while I replaced the load bearing parts of the construction. I have done all the work myself, so it takes a while to complete each task... Wink

As per today, I have completede the rebuilding of the roof and the walls. This means that the time has come to furnish the room, and the roomis meant to be a safe retreat for me, my computer and my guitars.

I can't wait to get it finished... Very Happy Finally a place where I can play my guitars and browse the Dean forum undisturbed ! (Maybe I should call it my GAS-chamber..?)

...and my wife will probably appreciate it too, as my guitars and the computer currently reside in our living room...

What do you think of the Vines?
by pcdoc on Fri Mar 26, 2004 5:19 pm
There's a lot of talk about the Vines being the next Nirvana...
Now I'm not a huge Nirvana fan or a huge Vines fan, but I do like most of what I'm hearing from the Vines.

What do you guys think of them?

I didn't realize you were trying to win this auction until I had already been having e-mail discussions with him. BEWARE.

Since his auction stated he was willing to end the auction early, I sent him and e-mail with an offer to end. He responded and said the amount I offered was sufficent, and he wanted to think about it overnight to be sure. I made annother slightly higher counter offer for him to end it that night, and he still wanted to think overnight. Ok....no problem. The next morning he sent me an e-mail and said "I'm ready to end the auction for you if you're still interested." I responed right back and said, "yes...please confirm our price, I will bid and you can end the auction." At this point I expect someone to honor a commitment and their word and a deal is closed. Where I come from your word is your bond.

Well, I don't hear from him for several hours. In the meantime, a bid is placed that is $10 higher than the price I offered him to end the auction. Suddenly the deal is off and he says "I'm going to have to let this one run, the bids keep rolling in." He seemed nice enough at first, but IMO anyone who backs out of a deal needs to be scrutinized carefully.

I just don't want you to get ripped off. I wouldn't but this guitar now from this guy if he begged me to. I just thought I could snag a great deal, and perhaps someday make a decent profit. Again, I didn't make the connection that you were bidding on the guitar until I checked in this moring and saw your post. I haven't been here long enough to recognize everyone's screen names. I see you're the high bidder now, so just be careful of the guy.

I'm completely out of the process now as this is something you're working on. Good luck.

Jeff

**Edit, I am not trying to interfere with this guys auction, as I read that is again't the rules here. I just don't want a member to get ripped off by someone who does not keep their word. Perhaps the condition of the guitar is not stated properly either if this is the type of person he is."
What pickups...
by Dim3 on Sat Mar 27, 2004 12:24 pm
Are in the Korina Guitars? I got an offer from a guy to buy a Korina V and i am pondering about it... I mean, i love the looks of it, but... How are the pickups? When i ordered that first Korina V (the one that got crushed), i got to play it for a while, but that was on a Crappy Marshall Training amp, wich had no tone at all, so i dont know... Give me your opinions on this one...

a site that has sound bytes of different amps. For those of you that saw a topic that I posted a while back, you know I'm thinking about a new amp. I only want a small one and I'm really not brand loyal.

Another poster, I forget who, said to try a Fender Champ. I'm seriously looking at that because I want a small tube amp combo, and as mentioned by the same poster, it has an outstanding sound rating at harmony-central. The problem is that I haven't heard it before.

Well, today I'm at my parent house and they have speakers (I usually go off my college library computers which obviously don't have sound) and would like to hear a variety of different amps. I don't know if there exists such a site, but if anybody knows of one, the help would greatly be appreciated. I can bring headphones to the library, so the post doesn't have to be today.

Me and money had a falling out, well she left me truth be told, so affordability is pretty important. Most likely I will have to wait 'til school is out to afford any amp, but realistically the champ does seem like a good deal, I just need to hear it. Thanks for reading through my rambling, I realize it's not put together real well.

by Original Recipe Ozzman on Sun Mar 28, 2004 12:19 am
Well, musically at least.... Very Happy

See, I went to a concert at a local place (roseville theatre) anywho.... I guy i know from school's band is playing there right? well i figure "yah i'll go" so, 2 friends and I, we go to this place, we are standing outside, and all these goth and black metal people start walkin by.... we all say a collective "uh oh" finish our slurpees, and go in... well this guys band is just setting up right? well they pull out a mesa triple recto, fender tube head and big fookin cab... like 6 12's in this bad boy! i am like "sweeeet" so, i take a look at their guitars... an epi casino, fender american candy apple red strat, and natural blonde tele, music man stingray bass, and this oddly familiar purple lookin acoustic guitar....

Well, i think "they look to be a pretty good band, i doubt theyd have this kinda gear if they weren't (come to find out, everyting 'cept the bass and drums is owned by the lead guitarist, my schoolmate)" anywho... they plug in, do some checks and go into this song, MAN! was it refreshing, they played all original written songs, with a classic rock, bluesy feel, the vocals could use a tad bit of work, but the best part? every single song had a KILLER solo on it... very laid back, bluesy penatonic approach, you know nothing fancy, but it sounded gorgeous.... at one point he did a sabbath-ish solo, and i mean, you could hear that epi singin that out... i mean, he reached down deeep inside that guitar and ripped the soul right outta that thing..... you wouldn't believe how wonderful it was to hear some new music with solos!!!

then to top everything off, for one song... the rhythm player pulls this purple acoustic, plugs it into the mesa, and instantly recognise it.... ITS A DEAN PERFORMER SERIES!! so at that point i had basically messed myself with excitement.... they played that for one song, dang it sounded good.

after a few other songs, (and more killer solos) they finished their set, and recieved a standing ovation.... i mean, even the black metallers, mallcorers, and goths applauded!! it was wonderful... they packed up, the lead guitarist, chirs came over to talk to us... i was like "dood that was friggin great! is that your dean?" he was all like "yah i think we did ok... yah its my dean, i love it man"

so... all in all great band, great sound, great solos, great guitar.... after they left, this mallcore cover band with mic'd 10 watt practice amp, playing a broze warlock, 3 drums, a samick strat, and a singer who couldn't scream right let alone sing, went on, and after 5 songs were boo'ed off the stage....

then, there were several rather good black metal-ish bands, i have to say they were pretty tight and got the fists pumpin, the people moshin' and the heads bangin'... but, the fist band (called 3rd Charm BTW) were by far, just a killer band with a great sound...

just thought you ought to know....
Pot wiring experts?... (not the drug)
by Megadeth on Sun Mar 28, 2004 1:43 am
i re-wired my guitar and threw in some old pots, but you cant read much on them due to excess soder crap, so i have the neck pup wired through a pot with "500 k and i see the letter "B" next to it. Usually the bridge pot is hotter than the neck, which is what i want. The bridge pot i have wried is smaller than the neck pot in size, but i cant read what it says. Usually i am used to the 500K for the brige and 250K for the neck, but does "500K-B" specify a normal neck fix? I just want to make sure im not running my duncan through a 250. if no one knows, ill just replace the electronics.

I was just looking at some old flyers and realized how awesome it was back in the 80's and 90's. I remember going to small clubs and seeing such acts as: Raven, Anthrax(Neil Turbin), Slayer, Metallica, Exciter, Leatherwolf, Malice, Great White, Armored Saint, Lizzy Borden, Roxanne(cha cha cha cherry bay!!!) Odin, and just tons of others. Those were the days......

Much Over Due Photos
by Jan Haaÿer on Sun Mar 28, 2004 2:53 pm
Well it has taken a very long time but I have gotten off my butt and got the photos of out Deans posted. The photos are not very good because I have had to resize them from 490k - 1.5mb down too 38 - 40k

Here is my NEW left handed 79' ML. It took some time to get used to. I'm more of a V man so one day when Dean makes a lefthanded version of the 79' V i'll be there.

Image

Here is my first ML-X it gets very little action. I always wanted an ML and after I got this one I found myself never playing it. So its for sale if you know any one who wants an ML-. Soon when I get off my butt I'm going to strip it down and give it one hell of a flame job.

Image

This is my very first Dean. Its a lefthanded V-X I play this one every time I play. It sound good it feels good and its got some din's on it so I dont have to baby it like I do with my 79. I LOVE THIS GUITAR

Image

This is Kristy DOA caddy. This is her very first REAL guitar. It sounds ok I guess. Its not my kinda guitar but thats ok becasue its not my guitar. Its Kristys. She likes it and I'm glade she does.

Linking Amp Channels Together ........ Revisited.
by hsech on Mon Mar 29, 2004 8:01 am
I have a 63 Fender Vibroverb Reissue with two channels and two inputs on each. There is no channel switching on the amp. Will a patch cord mentioned in a previous thread work with this amp? Would a A-B-Y switch work? Seems like I did this on an old Super Reverb amp back in the 60's, but I can't remember how I did it.
Duncan vs DiMarzio Question....
by mpire on Mon Mar 29, 2004 8:28 am
Not interested in preference, just wondering why Duncans in particular make Neck and Bridge versions of most of their line, yet the Dimarzio's usually just have a single version for neck or bridge.

When you match their pickups are you spposed to pick them so the bridge one is hotter than the neck like X2n > Fred > Norton > PAF?

If you wanted a pair of Fred's would that work the same way? Are you supposed to just move the neck pickup further from the strings?

Pic help, WARNING Possibly offensive Picture
by DINASTY on Mon Mar 29, 2004 9:51 am
someone, I need help with this picture. I nee it flipped 90 degrees to the right. For those curious, I belong to a Rifle Club for Historical, Curio and Relic Rifles. What I have here is an "as-issued" 1943 Mosin Nagant Russian Sniper Rifle from WWII. This rifle DID SEE USE in WWII, and more than likely killed Germans or Axis Allies. The Rifle, as it is a Highly Historical piece [if only it could talk!] is worth quite a bit. I am also holding a "as Issued" Russian Nagant revolver, which Also saw WWII use, and is also a highly sought after Collectable. Both of these piececs are special in that thay are still in teh same condition as they were when issued out in WWII, meaning that they were not refurbished or re-done in any way. These Are Musuem Quality pieces that I am Fortunate enough to be able to own and protect for future generations to enjoy. When I pass on, I expect these pieces to either be passed on to another like minded collector to will preserve them, or for them to go to a museum. I know some people are offended by firearms, so thus the warning. If you don't like them, that;s fine and your perogitive, but please don;t bother spouting off on this thread about it, I'm not interested. I only need help with the pic, and collect historical pieces, not discuss polotics. Thanks in Advance.

What did EVH play prior to the Kramers and Peaveys?
by transblueZ on Tue Mar 30, 2004 3:21 am
For some reason, this question came up. Every picture I can remember seeing of him was with those red pinstriped Kramer things or the newer Peavey Wolfgang jobbies. Maybe he always played those Kramers, but the 1st Van Halen came out in 1978 - didnt think they were making guitars at this time.

Crazy story!
by clmazza7 on Tue Mar 30, 2004 1:54 pm
A friend of mine has an AC/DC tribute band and plays out almost every Saturday night. He has an incredible sounding '67 SG that is all original and his main axe.

Well... after a scuffle with an ex-band member following a late night Saturday show, the band was loading up the van and one of the last pieces of equipment to go in are the guitars... including the SG.

The disgruntled ex-band member returns only to provoke my friend once again... and promptly grabs the SG case and flings it to the ground thus exposing the vintage beauty. In my friends haste to gather the guitar up, the deranged dude body slams him on top of the partially exposed SG cracking the neck and headstock.

Talk about a bummer..... be weary of people you kick out of bands! At least keep your prized beauty safely locked in a sturdy case.

TonePros

Okay guys. I am modifying a 79 series Z with a Tonepros instead of what came with it. My question is which style is it, Metric or Standard? I'm assuming metric since it was made in Korea, similar to my ESP which used a metric bridge. I know the Time Capsules use a standard but they are made in the U.S..
I play guitar
by Lon on Tue Mar 30, 2004 6:35 pm
I stole this from the Fender forum. It's well written, and as I'm finding that I just can't quit playing guitar, no matter how bad I am, I can identify with the writer in a small way. I know some of the older guys here will see themselves in here somewhere...........

So I Didn't Become a Rock Star

But I Still Love To Play Guitar More Than Anything Else by Bud Sloniger

In 1976, I wanted to be a rock star. I was filled with energy and teenage angst and saw those Marshall Stacks and hard ear-splitting stretched E-strings as the only relief from it. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Peter Frampton, REO Speedwagon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Boston, Santana, Journey, and some punks from Pasadena named Van Halen. Rock and roll guitar was it. I was saved from a life of glum boredom. I loved the electric guitar, and still do! It is a very large part of who I am. But I'm not a rock star. I'm just a guy that plays guitar, IMHO pretty well. But I'm also a husband, a father, friend, member of the community, Technical Systems Architect... I'm a rock and roll guitar player, and a rock and roll singer. The reason I'm writing this seemingly disjointed soliloquy is that learning to play the guitar has been the single most important factor in my life. Period. Absolutely no doubt about it. It's the only thing I've done consistently for the last 25 years. Girls (and wives), children, jobs, cars, friends, houses have all passed away or have been replaced. But not my guitar. "Never spend your guitar or your pen." was a line written by Pete Townshend. It is so true. For those of you that are new to this journey, vocation, skill, hobby, obsession that we call "playing the guitar", all I can say is you're in for quite a treat if you continue with it. I travel a lot for work, and a guitar is a companion I take along with me whenever I can. Even when I'm too tired to play, it's just a comfort to have it around. Like a sentinel in the corner to remind me that my work is not all that I am. I was on a long weekend recently and my mother was along with us. In the evening I came out to the patio by the pool carrying my guitar, and then sat down and softly began to play "Norwegian Wood". She asked "Do you still play very often?" And I said something like "Well, whenever I can get a chance." She said "That's good. It's nice to see something that you learned as a child has meant so much to you and the people around you for so many years." Gee...Mom...don't get me all misty-eyed here. But she is right. Even my mother, who stomped on the kitchen floor and yelled down the basement stairs "Turn that thing DOWN!" But also sat on the beach with me and the rest of the family and sang old Beatles songs until we were hoarse. My guitar playing started out as a frantic obsession. Lessons, friends to jam with. I couldn't learn too much too fast. Songs to write and arrange and record. Songs to learn, bands to form. The bands turn into an extended family, albeit somewhat dysfunctional in nature. But family just the same. I did, for a short while, play professionally. My only job was to play guitar and sing. Those were some of the most memorable times of my life, and I don't regret it for a second. But, life got in the way of all that, as it does with young men. And life begat school and girlfriends became wives and became young mothers and school became budding careers more profitable than playing guitar in bars. And yes, my mother did at times ask me when I was going to get a real job. And eventually I did, and I don't regret that I didn't become the next Gary Richrath or Ted Nugent. Well, not too much. And the reason I don't regret it is that in spite of all the tumult that life throws at me, I still play guitar. I play with friends in little pick-up rock bands and blues jams. Open mic nights or jamming with friends from work. I play at church, accompanying myself, or the choir, or groups of little children singing like cherubs (see my Gibson EDS1275 review). I've played and sang at weddings and funerals, in lonely motel rooms and crowded airport concourses. I have played and sung love songs to a pregnant wife, then lullaby’s to a fussy infant. I've played guitar to accompany my young son's squawking on a harmonica, and my daughter's beautiful voice. So, get your axe out of the case and grind it a while. Play a new song you learned for one of your friends. Get your kids to dance and sing. Make your spouse roll her eyes and shake her head while observing the expression on your face while trying to master a Satriani riff or something! Play guitar. It's always the best thing to do.

What song/riff do u "soundcheck" to?
by sandwich23 on Tue Mar 30, 2004 9:03 pm
I know you all have a song or riff that u play to check if your sound is what you like. For me it's Accept - Balls to the Walls and Anthrax - Medusa. To me if my guitar sounds just like the records when I play those songs - I'm dialed. And for the last few years I've been dialed in!!! I only touch the volume knob. Stoked.
