Build-your-own-guitar Kits .....anyone know about these?
well, I was noticing that on Ebay, there are some interesting guitar building kits, and I was wondering if anyone really knew about them. It seems to make sense, considering that they're pretty inexpensive, but it seems they might be just too much effort to do.
anyone ever try these?

IM TIRED OF WHEELING IN A CABINET AND HEAD , PLUGGIN IT ALL IN THEN FIRING UP THE TUBES AND THEN JAMMING. 10 MINUTES HAS ALREADY PASSED BY THEN AND IF I LEAVE IT THERE WHEN IM DONE THE HUGE THING IS AN EYESORE IN THE HOUSE. ANYONE HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THE LINE 6 SPIDER ?

Nikki, one of our female soldiers, with a kickass axe!
Pete with a kickass axe!
My former roommate from Seoul, again, with a kickass axe!!!
And is any post from me complete without a pic of me with a kickass axe?
One thing I just HAVE to say
I've often wondered what Dischord would have sounded like with someone on the bass that knows what four strings can do in the right places...
Bernt has brought that alive...and I like it. He's sent me a rough version to listen to and I have nearly wet myself...the intro on it is a bit choppy...but WOW...it really gives depth and a new dimension to the song Supernatural...I truly appreciate it. I intend to continue to collaborate with Bernt "The Evil Norweigian" not only on the Dischord songs, but also on NEW original songs, and I'd really like to get some other forumites involved as well...metalheads UNITE!!! Some of you can play drums, and I will ask you to if you can and want to, some of you can sing, again I will ask if you have interest in the project, but most of all we ALL play guitar, and I'd love to hear some solo and rhythm ideas from all you metal maniacs!!! Talk about a union of the minds!! I mean, I know I'm not the greatest guitarist on here, not by a long shot, but I really enjoy playing music and I'm doing everything I can to improve my prowess on the neck!
One thing I'd like to do, for Bernt, is have a pic of Bernt photoshopped into one of the Dischord band pics as he IS contributing to the music and in my book that makes him part of the band, and a writer of riffs as NONE save one of the songs had a bassline on the demo. If one of you photoshop gurus can photoshop that pic, I'd be grateful for that as well...
Hmm, next step, I guess on the Dischord stuff is to remove some of Andy's rudimentary solos (yes, they are a bit redundant) and replace them with better ones. The ones he put on Bloodlust stay because IMO that is the best solo work he ever did. But I really think that the rest of his solos could be improved.
I like to start the week out with a chuckle.
Picking a wife...
A man is dating three women and wants to
decide which to marry. He
decides to give them a test. He gives each
woman a present of $5,000
and watches to see what they do with the
money.
The first does a total make over. She goes to
a fancy beauty salon
gets her hair done, new make up and buys
several new outfits and
dresses up very nicely for the man.
She tells him that she has done this to be
more attractive for him
because she loves him so much. The man was
impressed.
The second goes shopping to buy the man gifts.
She gets him a new set
of golf clubs, some new gizmos for his
computer, and some
expensive clothes. As she presents these
gifts, she tells him that she has
spent all the money on him because she loves
him so much. Again, the man is
impressed.
The third invests the money in the stock
market. She earns several times
the $5,000. She gives him back his $5000 and
reinvests the remainder in
a joint account. She Tells him that she wants
to save for their future
because she loves him so much. Obviously, the
man was very impressed.
The man thought for a long time about what
each woman had done with
the money he'd given her. Then, he married
the one with the biggest boobs.
Men are like that, you know.

A little piece of Holland right in the USA
Hello, as some of you may know, May 1st through the 8th marks the national tuliptime festival in Holland Michigan. Holland Michigan is a small 36,000 pop. city in western michigan, that was settled sometime in the 1800's by dutch settlers who named it, none other, than holland.... I recently had the chance to visit holland this past weekend, and i figured i would show you guys some pictures that I got....
here we go...
the part of Holland we mainly visited is a place called "Windmill Island" and as soon as you gewt out of the car and begin to walk around, you are immediately are greeted with thousands of tulips everywhere!! the sea of colors is wonderful, and they blanket the ground
more pics
ok, now that my masculinity has been threatened enough by posting pictures of flowers... i can move on to more manly things, like big painted automated pipe organs...
you can read info about it on the next pic, when i went up to it, believe it or not, was playing "i'll follow the sun" by i think the beach boys, but i am not sure...
after that, we came up to what was undoubtably, a bunch of flags... undoubtedly european... so i snapped a pic of em
then, after going over an insanely steep drawbridge that was on a 45 degree incline to the ground... we came up to a hill, more tulips, and the only real winmill I have ever seen... The windmill that is in the following pictures is the DeZwaan windmill. It is over 240 years old, and was originally located in the netherlands, but was dismantled and brought to the us with Dutch immigrants in the 1800's and it is a truly beautiful sight to behold, i had to back up about 300 feet or so to get these picturtes, so i could fit the whole thing in, thats how big it is...
then, it was back over the hill, over the insanely steep bridge, and over to "Little Netherlands"
but first, I had to get this killer metalhorns shot infront of a lil windmill...
UP THE IRONS!!!
then off to little netherlands.. which is basically a scale model of holland circa sometime in the 19th century, when dutch began emigrating to america.... and it is filled with water.... unfortunately, i couldn't get any pics because it is covered in glass and is reletively dark, so the flash will reflect everything... and yah... not pretty.... but here are the signs!!
the funny thign abotu this pic, is i accidently got the porta toilet that was next to lil holland, in the pic, and it kinda looks like the porta toilet is little holland.... i dunno... i found it funny....
theres the other sign..
then we were off to the one thing no american attraction is without.... a souvenir shop... it was very interesting, in one room they were carving intricate dutch candles which sold for about 60.00 each... a lil too rich for me.... but, then we went next door, which was full of delft blue look-a-like stuff, and klompens, and fudge made with imported dutch cocoa.... so... there we got some fudge, and some reeely good windmill cookies... and we got hans and inge some stuff... from our holland, to theirs.... hans... we were going to get you this porcelain windmill music box, but alas, we couldn't find one that played tankard when you wound it up....
here is a pic of a bunch of wooden klompens... on a rope....
then we left the shop, and on the way out to the car i saw this beautiful carousel with nice hand painted pictures and a pipe organ in the middle... so i snapped a pic of it....
and this is jsut a random pic of as windmill with american flags on it that i felt like shooting....
so, all in all, the 2 hour drive each way was worth it.... i got to witness a little piece of dutch history... and a wholr lotta tulips....
i know this has nothing to do with guitars... but i thought some of you might enjoy learning about this lil tradition...
Tankard Puke lyrics
Drink! this beer is for my health
And have a couple more
Drink! Until the beer is gone
And pass out on the floor
Puke! Puke! I drank too much
Vomit on the chair
Puke! Puke! I drank too much
Even in my hair
Drunk! The room is spinning
It's turning round and round
Drunk! My stomach let me know
As I fell to the ground

by Wayne_S on Tue May 04, 2004 12:55 am
The M.A. Batio clinic rolled into Phx Az. today kickin butt and taking names I havent seen Dean since DOA 1 and it was really great to hang out and talk. I also met Michael and man we just started talking shop and all the good stuff, very cool! There was a great turn out and everybody really enjoyed the whole thing. Check it out if it comes to your town!
I also had Dean sign my 84' Baby ML. As it turns out its ready for clear coat and the timing couldnt have been better. Dean was pleased with the work thats been done so Im excited to see it finally completed, dang thing been down for 10 years now
I learned some cool things from Michael's clinic even though he shread my face off! The guy was intense and serious about his craft but also made it lots of fun He played stock Deans like they were his own. The only guitar he brought was the double neck shread fest machine. It was simply sick I tell ya! Very refreshing to meet a serious talent like Michael and hes just like your average joe. Thx man it was great to meet ya !!!!
Im hoping to take some pictures of tomorrow nights clinic
Does anybody have any idea what kind of bridge would work in this body? Anybody have any ideas on what kind of guitar it is? If you see this and like it PLEASE don't bid on it. I want to get it and build my first guitar. Thanks for any help you can pass along.

innovation or hype?...
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/ptech/05/04/digital.guitar.ap/index.html
I've seen it on the board a TON of times. The age old search for a band member - man is it frustrating.
I have 2 groups I play with. One is a classic rock group that is nothing more than a bunch of friends having some fun and an excuse to drink beer and bug the neighbors. Thats where I get to disgrace myself with my chops!!!
The other is a fairly serious rock/blues group that has some really talented musicians (I don't play guitar in this group other than some acoustic backing - just sing). My guitarist is really amazing - very technically talented and he can really make the guitar sing. The keyboard player is amazing - A Korg CX3 (think Hammond B3) through a Lesley cabinet - man can he wail!! The bass player is pretty tight and Mrs. Diz is the horns section through her synth as well as some piano. This band can really make music!
Now - notice I didn't mention the drummer?? We've been through 3 so far. We just tried another guy this past Monday and he was brutal. Usually when we are practicing, I'll play the drums just to keep the beat. Nothing fancy - but I keep the song moving. I don't pretend to be a drummer by any stretch of the imagination but I could play circles around everyone weve tried so far. The guys in the band now want me to play drums full time - but I can't do it and sing. I don't know about anyone else, but the difference between just singing, and singing while playing is night and day for me. Even if I play guitar and sing, it just isn't the same. The vocals really go down a notch.
What I don't understand is people who think they can play - but when you get them there - they are terrible. Are they listening to something else or what? I told the most recent guy that the musicians in this group are really good - very tight. No problem he says - I can play!!! Then you get him there and it's like he playing different songs. I mean sometimes his beat was completely off - and he really started to speed up big time as the songs went on. no sense of timing at all. This guy may have been the worst drummer I have ever seen.
I just don't understand how someone that bad would think they can play. I know my limitaions on the guitar and I would never try to play with a group that was looking for a really good guitar player. So how come all these other people don't know thier limitations??
Wish us luck - we got another guy trying out on May 13th.
He's a guy we work with - hope he's good - cause it's always hard telling someone afterwards that they just don't have it. The other guys were easy to "let go" cause they had all been recommended by other people. Which is another thing - other people thought these guys could play too.

The Project Studio Handbook
Any chance Dean will be introducing a thin body acoustic. On stage I just don't like the thick acoustic body and I've notice that even Gibson has a new one, Ovation has the shallow bowl, etc.
I guess that the advantage is ease of playing, less feedback, and still have an acoustic tone.
Something like this: mabey even thinner, bridge look familiar?

Can any of you guys help me out ?

I am not the kinda guy who wants to be tattood from head to toe, but just one big piece on my arm....

Battle of the Bands Tomorrow!!!!!!!
Hey all, my band is playing in a local battle tomorrow!!! Woooooooooohooooooo!!
We only get 15 min on stage but theres gonna be 10-20 diff bands there so its all good. We're playing 3 songs in this order:
For Whom The Bell Tolls (with the sweet Bass effects )
Voodoo Child
Fade To Black
All of these will be played on my Edge Q5 with my Edge 1 in reserve (only cuz its pups aren't as good )
We only one guitarist now but we sound pretty damn hot together lol. We will almost for sure blow away the rest of the guys since theres supposedly gonna be one Sweedish Death Metal style band there and like 15 Pop-punk/Emo bands there (BOOOOOOOO )
Wish us luck guys. I'll try and post some pics of it when I get em back. two of our Dads are gonna video tape the performance so if I can put em online for you guys or rip the audio, I will.
Peace out guys, Ima go get psyched with some oldschool Metallica and then hit the hay. Rock On Guys!!!

I was there looking around last night and they had these Rockbag gigbags in a clearance bin for $3!!!!! I took both of them, and since one didn't have the tag, the guy gave it to me! The one still has all the new tags and a price of $49.99. These are the fattest, most protective gigbags I've ever seen. I didn't need 2 but at that price I figured what the hell. Here's also a pic of my new Fender Super 210 tube amp and the Fernendes Vertigo I got a few days back.
Amp demos - Bogner Uberschall, Crate VC50
Yesterday I was able to go head to head with a Bogner Uberschall halfstack with my Crate VC50 combo. The results were sweet on both ends. The Bogner had so much heaviness to it it was crazy!!! For sure it's the be all end all for modern type metal and any kind of outdoor stage or big room. The downside, IMO, to all that bottom end is that it just can't be played below an ear splitting volume. Recorded with an SM57 it sounds awesome.
My Crate also sounded great, different by far, but still just great. The Crate is more of the vintage Priest tone. Cool with me. Next we plugged the Crate into the Bogner Ubercab(celestion vintage 30'sX2 and Gt75's X2 crossed patterned) and my Crate turned into a BEEFY snarling ,monster that was on par with the Bogner. Seriously. It was incredible. Three of us just stood there drop jawed. We recorded miking up both his cab and the combo. It was heaven. The other amp was a Mesa Boogie Quad preamp and mesa 2/90 power amp. It didn't stand a chance!!!!!

by NickM on Sun May 09, 2004 8:22 pm
Yep, that's right. I have to move by July 1 since my parents are renting the house we're living in now, and the landlord wants to sell the house. It sucks because we're probably going to move to a town house or something, and that would interfere with the loud guitar playing. Bah this sucks. It's also really far from school. We're talking about 5km from school. That might not seem like a lot, but it is.

Brian Loyd.....is a freak!!
I've been listening to Brian Loyd's new album, 'Wanna Play' for about a week now. And I must say, rules!
Brian makes very cool, very listenable, very memorable freaky music. And rather than just shred over every tune, Brian creates bizarre, evolving soundscapes. Acid shred movie soundtracks, if that makes any sense.
Plus, you gotta hear the tone he gets from his VHT amp. Brutal.
I became even more impressed when Brian told me that the majority of the weird sounds on the album originated with his guitar. I can't figure how he does it.
Anyway, I highly recommend you buy Brian's new album. You'll be getting some great music, and supporting independent music.

Dean Chafin Del Sol - what bridge/tailpiece properly fit?
by ggdChris on Tue May 11, 2004 12:35 am
Hey guys. I'm in the process of switching out the gold hardware for some chrome on my Dean Chafin Del Sol (kickass guitar by the way... I'm selling my Gibson Les Paul Standard, but keeping this).
I noticed that my LP and the Chafin have completely different sizes for the tailpiece and the bridge.
Does anybody have any idea what will fit this properly without any modification to the guitar (really don't want to drill any holes in this baby)?
If anyone can help me, it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for your time
what did those Dean Banners used to go for?

Hello, sorry for another ebay topic.
I'm selling a motorcycle on ebay, but during the listing a prospective buyer came by to test it out. After some riding, there was a mechanical problem that occurred. Ebay won't let me revise since I have a bid on it already. I e-mailed them and they told me what I already know "you can add on, but not revise". Well, either I don't know what I'm doing, or it won't let me do it.
I've gone to my item listing. Hit the "revise your item" link, go to the next page with my item # on it and hit "continue", scroll down to "add to description" and add what I need to in the "vehicle description" box. It then says that I can't do that because someone has bid.
I guess I need to know where to go to add on, but not actually revise. I don't want anybody bidding without knowing the new problem. I've contacted the bidders and have removed one already. I just want the bidders to be informed.

Got the ENGL Powerball today. This is THEE sound that I have been looking for! This sucker is extremely articulate. Tight with lots o' gain but you can still hear individual strings ring out with chords with harmonic overtones that I have never heard from an amp (hard to describe, but it is like the difference between the color red and crimson - the later being that much more dynamic). Very pleasing.
Tons of knobs and buttons for a tweakers delight (i.e. lots of tonal options). The clean is very functional with shades of Call of Kthulu/One clean sounding. The built noise gate is really good, I had the amp on with my guitar volume off and there was absolutely no hiss like I get with my Marshall. It doesn't seem to effect tone or sustain at all. Cosmetically this thing fits right in with my rig. In fact it is almost the same exact width of the Marshall 1960A cabinet.
I am glad I didn't end up buying the Marshall triple lead head. It sounded really good, but had a little fuzz to it that bothered me. This amp is killer. Highly recomended.
Thanks to Hans for introducing me to this! And thanks to Derek at Rock Solid Amps, he is a stand up guy.
Some food for thought.... our President and our Military
Worst president in history?
The following appeared in the Durham, NC local paper as a letter to the
editor. Please forward to all on your list as this will put things in
perspective:
Liberals claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war. They
complain about his prosecution of it. One liberal recently claimed Bush was
the worst president in U.S. history. Let's clear up one point: We didn't
start the war on terror. Try to remember, it was started by terrorists
BEFORE 9/11. Let's look at the "worst" president and mismanagement claims:
FDR led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. From
1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.
Truman finished that war and started one in Korea, North Korea never
attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,333
per year.
John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never
attacked us.
Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were
lost, an average of 5,800 per year.
Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent, Bosnia never
attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times
by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.
In the two years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush has liberated
two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear
inspectors in Lybia, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot, and
captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. We lost 600
soldiers. Bush did all this abroad while not allowing another terrorist
attack at home. Worst president in history? Come on!
The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but...
It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch
Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation.
We've been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time
than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.
It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy
the Medina Republican Guard than it took Teddy Kennedy to call the police
after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.
It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in
Florida!!!!
Our military is GREAT! PASS IT ON.

What model/brand strings do Dean guitars ship with?
This may sound completely retarded, but the strings that came on my Dean Chafin Del Sol are incredible. In fact, for the past two and a half years, I haven't had to replace them, they still sound great...haha. Does Dean make his own or are they another famous brand? Thank you.

I traded in my Exotica FM tonight for an Exotica RSE. It is awesome! Solid spruce top, rosewood body, good bottom end that the FM lacked. It has a better feel to it - hard to describe, but feels much better. Great inlay and binding work, too. I am happy.....
Has anyone heard the "Red Coat" series speakers from Eminence?
I was talking to Scott Splawn of Splawn Guitars (amp guru) about an amp, and he HIGHLY recommened the "Governor" model for my 4 X12 cab. He also gave me a few ideas how to improve my cab. Wondered if there were any opinions out there about these speakers.........

Just wondering if this is possible? Currently I have multi track recording software, but limited to the 1 line in on the sound card. Are there any sound cards with multiple line ins or are there any other devices that would allow multiple inputs to be recorded on their own track?

Who is Your Favorite Acoustic Blues Guitar Player???
My vote goes to Rory Block... First heard about her in the 80's... Below is a blurb I found on the Homespun Tapes web-site about her... She only gets better with age...
Peace... MotorcycleMonk
-------------
World renowned for her mastery of country blues, Rory Block has won the W.C. Handy award for “Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year” in 1997 and 1998 and “Acoustic Blues Album of the Year” in 1996 & 1999. Add to these laurels her latest award, the French “Trophees France Blues 98 -- International Guitarist Acoustique ‘98” -- and one can see that Rory Block has become one of the all-time highest regarded blues artists in the world.
Block plays regularly to devoted, enthusiastic audiences throughout America and Europe. She’s performed and recorded with an such luminaries as Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Wonder, Mark Knopfler, Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo, Jorma Kaukonen, the Band, Mary Chapin Carpenter and many others. She is an esteemed presence as a songwriter, having garnered not only a gold record in Europe for her album, Best Blues And Originals, but has also won three INDIE awards for “Best Adult Contemporary Album of the Year.”
She is beloved for the power and honesty of her songwriting and for the unique directness and passion of her performances.
"Rory Block has been an inspiration to me since we started out years ago. Her guitar playing, singing and songwriting are some of the most soulful in traditional and modern blues." Bonnie Raitt
How much is my 1979 dean z explorer
by droe on Sat May 15, 2004 7:03 pm
I want to know how much my 1979 dean z explorer is. It's not in perfect condition, it has some scratches and I had to get rid of the super distortions. They were dead. I also replaced the bridge with a new one. But that's it. I just need some ball park figure. Underneath the serial number it says patent pending. The color is transparent cherry.
Is there something wrong with my amp, or is it just me?
by NickM on Sat May 15, 2004 8:48 pm
Hey all,
I've noticed this recently... when I play the guitar, it seems like there isn't as much gain as there used to be, say, a few days ago. I don't know if it's my amp, or if it's all in my head! Is it a known problem for amps to do this? Have more gain at some point, and then it lowers at another time? Am I going crazy?
Chicago Guitar Show
by tess on Sun May 16, 2004 8:46 am
The show this year was very good in regards to the number of Dean's that I saw. Up significantly over prior years, and overall, the show brought in many stores from all over the USA as well as some high end guitar manufacturers like Abyss and Warrior. Warrior actually had a 15 string bass on display! I wish I would have brought my camera.
On to the Deans.
Local dealer "Music Gallery" who is located close to were the old Dean Factorys were located was representing Dean in full force. They brought out EVERY high end Dean that they have. If you've seen them on "gbase", they had them all here in person. TC Z's & ML's, Caddy's & Hardtails in all the exotic finishes. Probably had a booth that was 24 feet wide, so all 24 feet had Dean's on them. Probably 15 of 'em! Amazing how much well deserved exposure Dean was getting at this show. I'm sure the attendees knew who Dean was after they left. On the sides they had a few other "no name" guitars that started with an "F" and a "G" I think, but no more then about 6 total. So the entire booth was Dean. Really cool. They also said that Dean Z. was going to attend the show later that day!
Olivia's was also there, and they had the Blueburst Elite thats been on ebay all month and a 79 Elite. I talked with the guy and he still wanted $1000 for the BB. I told him it was too high and told him the $700 range was more reasonable. He said he gets $1500 for BB guitars and that was why the price was what it was. I pointed out that it was a later year model and didn't have the original pickups, but he wasn't interested.
I ran into a dealer that had a 98 Czech Caddy Ultima in Amber that was in excellent shape. He wanted $750 for it and I told him was crazy. Said he would deal on it, so I would imagine it could have been had for $100 less. Still a bit high, but would have been spot on if it was a Premium.
Saw a Dean "Bud" guitar at one of the booths. Always wondered how they painted the pickups.
Finally ran into a guy walking around with a guitar case with the Dean winged logo on it. Asked him what he had, and he said he had a prototype Dean. I asked him "how do you know its a prototype?". He popped the case and pulled out the Trans Red Z that was the prototype for the TC series that was floating around on "gbase" last year. Said it was a little too heavy of a guitar for him to play and he was looking for something a little lighter. Wanted $800 for it. I told him good luck.
So by my count thats around 18 Deans. Made my day. Overall a great show, even though I couldn't pry any vintage Deans out of the hands of the dealers. BTW, the Flame Green Caddy at Music Gallery is awesome in person!

WARNING FOR MEN
Police are warning all men who frequent clubs, parties and local pubs to be alert and stay cautious when offered a drink from any woman.
Many females use a date rape drug on the market called -(Beer)- The drug is found in liquid form and available just about everywhere. It comes in bottles, cans, from taps and in larger containers called "kegs."
Female sexual predators at parties and bars use Beer to persuade male victims to go home and have grox with them. A woman needs only to get a guy to consume a few units of Beer and then simply ask him home for no strings attached grox. Men are rendered essentially helpless by this nefarious approach.
After several Beers, men will often unknowingly succumb to primal desires to perform sexual acts on horrific looking women whom they would never normally be attracted. After drinking Beer, men often awaken with only hazy memories of exactly what happened to them the night before, often with just a vague feeling that "something bad" occurred.
At other times these unfortunate men are swindled out of their life's savings, in a familiar scam known as "a relationship." In extreme cases, the female may even be shrewd enough to entrap the unsuspecting male into a longer-term form of servitude and punishment referred to as "marriage." Men are much more susceptible to this scam after Beer is administered and grox is offered by the predatory females.
Please, forward this warning to every male you know. If you fall victim to this 'Beer' and the women administering it, there are male support groups where you can discuss the details of your encounters with similarly affected like-minded guys.
For the support group nearest you, just look up "Golf Courses" in the phone book.

A different way to support your local Dean dealer
Okay, I mentioned these in another thread so I thought I'd make good on my promise and post them here.
One of my local Dean dealers is a guy named Johnny Z. Johnny Z's is a small shop, he doesn't have as many guitars as the local Daddy's, but it's still great to go in there to see what Deans he has and to just plain shoot the breeze. He also does a lot of setups and repair work...everybody in the Cuse uses him.
Anyway, last fall I asked Johnny if my ad agency could make some posters/ads for him for free. (Ad agencies sometimes do this to show off their creative chops...and believe you me, making posters for a music store is a lot more fun than making ads for widgets!) Being the cool guy he is, Johnny said go for it.
The following are scaled down versions of posters we made for the store. I figured since Johnny offers everything from gear to lessons to repairs -- he's basically teaching you everything you need to know about rockin'. So we decided to have some fun with that.
By the way, the copy at the bottom (if you can't read it) says: "Equipment. Lessons. Repairs. And everything else you need to know about rockin'. "

HEARING ABOUT DAVES NEW PROJECT. LAST WE HEARD YOU WERE REHEARSING HARDCORE. PLEASE DO TELL. ID LIKE TO HEAR ABOUT THE PROGRESS .
After our last practice, my lead guitar player noticed a bit of ringing in his ears. Fairly normal since we play in a fairly small area and to keep up with the drums, you gotta have a bit of volume. Problem is - the ringing didn't stop. So, he went to see the Doc and she told him he has a touch of tenitis. We haven't played since and he's pretty worried. Having read up on it a bit, I would be too.
He's getting fitted for musicians plugs this week that are suppossed to be fairly good. They are called ER15's. They are supposed to be excellent at lowering the overall volume evenly without effecting the sound quality. The ER15's lower the volume by 15db - there are also ER9's and ER25's that lower it 9db and 25db respectively. Apparently they just bring the volume level down while still letting all the frequencies through. The don't just "block out" sound like standard ear plugs.
So, the question is - anyone ever try these things? How good are they?
http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/erme.asp
I'm going to get fitted for a pair as well I think. Based on what I have read about tenitis - it's some really scary stuff!!! Ringing in your head that never goes away. It's been known to drive people nuts! And, with my occupation - my hearing is my livelyhood.
Basically, whenever your ears ring - you have done some irreversable damage that will catch up with you later in life. Time to start protecting the old ears I think!!!!!!

Well here it is, I realise the finish is a metter of taste but I dig it a lot.
I only played it a few minutes so no real judgement yet...but it is much better than I expected...the ebony board is flawless and ultra smooth!
the neck joint design grants VERY ggood acces to the 24 frets, and even the EMG sound cool as far as I can judge now...
It's not as well balanced as the TC's but it's not too neck heavy either, less than I expected it to be..
The neck binding isn;t over the frets either like the TC's but apart from thos facts it's pretty damn close, I love the neck though it is a C shape, it's not fat and really well playable.
I still take a TC but I don't think I'll sell this one soon!
and the GDE Loser Award goes too...
So, I've been watching this guitar and emailed the guy for permission to bid since I only have 4 feedbacks. He says go ahead. I make a special trip home to place my bid and guess what? You got it, the seller cancelled all bids and pulled the auction early. I quote from the original auction, "No Reserve so what ever you bid you win how is that for cool." Would have been real cool if he would have actually done it. The relist says, "I had no reserve but I had to close the auction because I can't just give this guitar away." Use an opening bid in the first place. Guy wasted my time and is now on the list along with McDonalds, Chrysler and Dell. Shame, I would have paid a fair price for it.

Michael Angelo Batio Clinic
by tess on Fri May 21, 2004 8:39 am
Michael was in town last night at the local music store, Hix Brothers Music. I was suprised that this was scheduled at this store because it is a relatively small store, probably half the size of a Guitar Center. Showed up about 15 minutes before it started and what the store did was to clear out the middle of the store of all their gear and set up a small stage, PA, amps and folding chairs for the people to sit.
Michael played and talked for almost two hours to a crowd of over 100 people. It was a really great show, although I'm sure he played a wrong note in there somewhere! (I just don't know which one it was as he played sooo many!) He gave great support for Dean Guitars talking up their product line quite extensively. Also, pointed out that the only gear he brought was his Double Neck guitar and two foot pedals. All other Dean guitars and amps were from Hix Brothers. So he's playing 2 imported Hardtails, one in Copper and the other had the Flip Pearl finish. Now I'm sure Michael can make a $5 kids guitar from Toy's R Us sound like a million bucks, but these imported Hardtails sounded awesome. The dealer said he was going ask Michael to autograph them and would sell them at a discounted price. So someone probably walked away with a Hardtail wailed on and autographed by MAB for less then $700! By the way, under the stage lights that Copper finish on the Hardtail stands out. Dean needs to offer that finish on more guitars.
The Dealer raffled off Dean Hats and overall it was a great evening. This stuff really makes it not because Michael is a great artist, but also because he is a great showman and works the crowd quite well. Great night and glad I got a chance to catch it in my backyard.
Final observation. If you want to cultivate the younger crowd, keep on having MAB doing these. I'd say the average age of the crowd was 15. Was actually great for me because I was able to get a parking space right by the front door! Work out some promo pricing for the event on Dean Guitars and advertise in advance that you can have MAB autograph YOUR Dean that night. MAB was pitching the excellence of Dean Guitars and this should be combined with someone making a soft pitch on special event pricing that would last for the next 72 hours or such.

by Lon on Sat May 22, 2004 9:21 am
I know he's not on here a lot lately, but I read on the Fender forum that his father passed yesterday. My family's thoughts are with you during this time. Both my parents are long gone so I feel your pain.
Favorite PUPS
by go4it on Sat May 22, 2004 11:48 am
I want to get some oppinions on pick up combinations. Which pups do you like best in the bridge and neck positions? I want a lot of tonal capability, but still want some major gain (especially at the bridge). I also want to put covers on them (so the screw placements need to be the normal ~2" from high E to Low E). Thanks for your comments!
Looks like the korinna, after all Dave's hard work, stays silver instead of gold...none of the Czech hardware is standardized so nothing fits it...have asked Dave since I can't get that guitar changed to gold if I can get black hardware for my white ML...not sure what he'll say, but I WILL say this, Dave at Bass and Treble has been hanging on to this guitar for months now trying new hardware, putting up with my whining etc. His diligence in this matter has been absolute, and that is appreciated very much so.
Starting to get syched about the VH show coming up. Also been listening to alot of VH lately. Got me to thinking, I were stranded on a desserted island, and could only have 1 VH cd, which one would it be????????
I think the first one would be my choice.... What about you?????????

Neck crack advice
by Lon on Sun May 23, 2004 7:26 pm
This is the neck on the neckthru Stagemaster I got yesterday. I was playing outside today in the sunshine and noticed it. The camera flash makes it look much more visible than it really is. Since there is a locking nut, and really no pressure on the headstock, I don't think it's a problem. What do you all think? I got it at GC and so I have 30 days to make up my mind. I really really like this guitar and am pretty bummed. The guitar had been dropped before I bought it and has a quarter size ding in the back (which is why I got it for $99), so I imagine this happened at the same time.

floyd rose tremmmy
by Mailman on Mon May 24, 2004 2:38 pm
im finding on both of my guitars with trems (same type, the one in my av, and the only trem guitars i have to compare with) that if i pull far back on the floyd, that i get weird cut off/ clicking sound when it gets near the end if im holding on pretty much any fret on the high E string. the B and up are all fine, but its this last one that is getting muted. is this normal?
ive already @#%$@!!& around with spring tension and thats not it....though i have no idea why that would be it, lol

Wiring question with Dean Chafin
I am putting new pickups in my Dean Chafin. I noticed that the neck pup has red and black wires coming from it and the bridge has white and black wires. The black wires are attatched to the back of the three way switch.
I'm going to be putting in two Dimarzios. I'm a little perplexed as to what to do with the two basic ground wires. I have a green "ground" wire and a "bare" wire (I figure that always goes to the central ground part or the back of the volume pot). Should I solder them both to the back of the volume pot, or the green on the back part of the three way switch?
Anyone else know if I'm correct here? Thx to anyone who replies

Is this stuff for painted guitars or just natural finish ones? I got some used gigbags at GC and found a Warwick truss rod tool, manual, and an unopened can of this stuff in one of them. Here's the text that goes with the pic.
"The perfect accessory to care for and protect the exquisite woods of your Warwick bass. For monthly use on all non-colored, natural oil finish basses."
Need some quick but easy help here.
Hiya,
A friend of mine is going to sell his Dean Avalanche One, since he recently bought a Dean Evo Special Select (the poor sod was looking at Epiphones first, thank god I managed to save his soul). Now I myself am looking for a 2nd guitar, and this one fits the bill nicely. It is in mint condition, but needs a setup BADLY (a whole new definition of fretbuzz).
So, what would a fair price be. Remember, he is a friend, lives nearby, and I don't want to rip him off. He asks for 150 Euro, which is around $175. Too much? Fair? Any comments would be apreciated.
The current resolution is a bit dark...I'm working on a better one.
The singer/guitar player is playing my Evo Noir...and to think he was a Fender Super Strat guy! The 80 V is in full effect. It's a minute or so from one song and an entire song. Props to my boys in Cazic for hooking us up with the video footage. If you dig killer death metal, check them out...one of them I hear is a Dean forum member. www.cazicmetal.net AMAZING band.
The video feed is at www.mocrocks.com click on Video. I wish we had other songs to show...I think the full one is our weakest but hey, it's something.
Feedback welcome, as always.

HOLY s#%t ! I THINK I JUST SAW THE MOST AMAZING VOCAL PERFORMANCE IN MY LIFE. I DONT KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE WATCH THIS SHOW BUT I WATCH IT EVERY TIME ITS ON. MOST THE TIME PEOPLE DO AN OK JOB AND IN THE BEGINNING OF EACH SEASON IT IS EXTREMELY FUNNY TO WATCH PEOPLE MAKE ASSES OF THEMSELVES. THIS YEAR THERE IS THIS 19 YEAR OLD WOMAN NAMED PHANTASIA BERINO . SOME POOR BLACK CHIC FROM THE STIX IN NORTH CAROLINA IN SOME SMALL TOWN POPULATION 50 OR SOMETHING . MAN, HER VOICE GIVES ME CHILLS AND GOOSEBUMPS. THE ONLY FEMALE SINGER I EVER HEARD BETTER IS PATTY LABELLE . TONIGHT WAS THE FINAL EPISODE THIS SEASON AND SHE WILL DEFINATELY WIN. THE JUDGE "SIMON" WHO USUALLY IS A DOUCHEBAG TOLD HER TONIGHT THAT THE AMERICAN IDOL SERIES IN DONE IN 70 COUNTRIES AND AIRED IN HUNDREDS. SHE IS BY FAR THE BEST SINGER EVER ON AMERICAN IDOL. MAN THIS CHIC IS AMAZING. JUST BLOWS MY MIND. THIS WOMAN IS DESTINED TO BE A STAR IF SHE HOOKS UP WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE AFTERWARDS. RANT!
Hey guys, I caught the latest edition of "Extreme Makeover Home Edition" last Sunday night. If you haven't seen this show, you should. It's pretty cool. Basically these designers will completely redecorate and remodel a home for a family in need. Really cool.
This last week they remodeled this house for this family of teenagers. These 7 kids lost both of their parents to heart attacks within 2 weeks! Awful I know! The oldest siblings (two girls 23 and 21) are caring for the rest of the kids..
Anyway, there was only one boy in the group of 7 kids. I don't know how old he was but he was a guitar player. When he was showing the designers his old room they pulled out his guitar. Lo and behold it's a dean!! They were playing with it and you could clearly see the Dean signature on the headstock. I don't know what kind of guitar it was.. It kinda looked like one of the new Vendetta series but I doubt it's that new. It was black with white or silver bindings on it.
Pretty sweet guitar and some free tv space for Dean! Go Dean guitars!!!

Sorry folks, but question 'bout Evo XM
Yeah, another question again:
As I said, I am looking between an Avalanche One and an EVO XM. I like the looks and finish of the Evo much better the the black One, but I havent been able to actually play one. And since no local shops carry it, I have to order it from abroad, which will cost 149Euro, which is $175.
So in short. Is a used Avalanche One better/worse then a Evo XM? And are those tuners on the EVO XM really as bad as they look? Anyone here with first-hand proper EVO XM experiences? Which one has better upgrade potential? Anything weird I need to know about the XM?
Thanks again.
Toby Keith on the ACM awards tonight
Hi Guys,
I just got off the phone with Chuck Goff (Toby Keith's bass player) and wanted to let everyone know that Toby is playing the Academy of Country Music awards show tonight. Chuck will probably be playing a brand new bass we just finished for him. After the show they'll be joining Ted Nugent on a USO tour entertaining our troops in Europe and, possibly, Afghanistan. I know that Country Music isn't usually the music of choice around here but it's really good TV time for Dean.

JRS-"Loss for Words" CD
by kevphol on Wed May 26, 2004 1:15 pm
If you haven't checked this out you need to. Jeff is a great guitar player, but almost more impressive is that he played every instrument himself! When you hear it, you will understand. Jeff could outplay a lot of drummers out there.
I've never really had an interest in a 7-string before listening to this, but I find myself now wanting to check it out. Really beefy rhythms and nice tones throughout the tunes. (Jeff, is that a 5150?) Jeffs playing is very melodic with excellent control, harmonizing leads and very tasteful periods of speed and shred.
I particularly like Cornfed, with it's southern rock feel, and Double Star, which is just amazing playing. That harpsicord? sound is very cool. The Rush influence really shows on Unearthly Ambition. All the tunes are a great listen.

Out of My casket to give a report
by Dug on Thu May 27, 2004 12:18 am
As the the subject reads, I came back from the Dead to give my report on the very first stop of Rush's thirty year anniversary tour.
Awesome
that's about the proper phrasing to state the subject properly. The show was about three hours long and contained all the proper and needed material content, as well as covers of Clapton, The Yardbirds and a great rendention of "Summertime Blues" as well as a couple of other cover classics. The lights were also awesome and the Band actually seemed to have an incredibly good time, making it a great and somewhat weird and wacky show. If you haven't got tickets yet....I would purchase them. these guys are the greatest gift that Canada has ever given us. Not I will renter my casket...until I deem another reason to voice my opinion necessary

Strap Locks - Which System?
by Ironhide on Fri May 28, 2004 11:28 am
I've been behind the times for years now and finally decided to install strap locks in my guitars. I've bought both a Schaller and a Dunlop set to determine which system I like most. So far I feel the Schaller is the most likely to hold at all costs, but the Dunlop appears to look visually better on the strap and has a thicker screw which should anchor the button better. I suppose I'm leaning more to the Schaller at this point.
So, which do you prefer and why?
L-500XL in a Time Capsule ML?
by TheVede on Fri May 28, 2004 12:22 pm
Hi gang!
I recently purchased a Time Capsule ML with stock Dimarzio Super Distortions. I love the guitar, and I *almost* love the bridge pickup, but it's just a hair muddier/fuzzier than I typically like (when using heavy distortion). I've got a Washburn Dime3 that came with an L-500XL, and I love the sound of it in that guitar, but as much as the ML and the Dime3 look very similar, the Dime is actually much heavier than the Dean, and is setup with heavier-gauge strings. It's therefore difficult for me to predict what an L-500XL might sound like in the Dean.
Okay, so, who's done this pickup swap? What are the differences - Super Distortion Vs. L-500XL?
Thanks in advance for the advice!
-Vede

Man Commits Suicide After grox with Hen
LUSAKA (Reuters) - A 50-year-old Zambian man has hanged
himself after his wife found him having grox with a hen, police
said Friday.
The woman caught him in the act when she rushed into their
house to investigate a noise.
"He attempted to kill her but she managed to escape," a
police spokesman said.
The man from the town of Chongwe, about 50 km (30 miles)
east of Lusaka, killed himself after being admonished by other
villagers.
The hen was slaughtered after the incident.

Just bought a mesa boogie mark III head
I really dug some of the mesa mark clips floating around the net.
IMO they are the closest thing to an ENGL powerball I heard here, the ENGL nails most the mark sounds I heard here.
The ENGL is more saturated and has more low end, can sound a bit more modern (mesa marks are like the old Metallica CD's)
So I was browsing a bit and found an used mark III for sale since everybody here in Holland is into recto's the marks are not really sought after and I could pick it up at a very decent price so why not LOL!
Gotta try one out for a while see how it works for me, I play as you all know old school thrash like EXodus, Dark Angel, Sodom, Kreator etc I hope that the mark works for me!
It's a long chassis, simul class, EQ, reverb head version BTW, gonna pick it up monday!
I never liked the recto's but this thing sounds very promising!

Tuners, and how to keep a guitar in tune.
Eya,
I currently own a Avalanche, and have a EVO XM on my way. Not trusting the 'sealed tuners' on the XM, and having plenty of experience with the 'Die Cast Tuners' on the avalanche, I have started to look at replacements. So here is the situation. I want to tune a guitar, and then have it stay in tune for atleast that day. At the moment my Avalanche is detuned every 30 minutes.
What kind of tuners do you need on a tremolo-less guitar? Are standard $35 tuners ok? Will I need Schaller tuners of $50 or even locking tuners? And for the Avalanche, will locking tuners make the tremolo actually usefull? I am totally unaware of how much different tuners help, so any advice would be welcome.

Been a good day and a bad day...
Had some bad news and some potential good news today.
Bad--> Derek Frigo from Enuff Z'Nuff has passed away. Possibly the most naturally talented musician I've ever seen. Ultimately lost his battle with drugs. Sad...
Good--> My name has been thrown into the hat for a possible tour opening for a guy who was big in the 80's. Talk iz of a Hard Rock Cafe, nationwide jaunt, so cross yer fingers and toes, eh? I don't wanna get my hopes up too high, yet. I couldn't survive the fall if it doesn't pan out. I've GOT to get a distribution deal going ASAP!

need help with types of necks
by Mailman on Mon May 31, 2004 11:24 am
im doing some project guitars and am still deciding on what kinda neck i wanna put in. what brands makes the best out there, or does it not matter as long as the materials are the same?
A few months ago I asked for suggestions on what pickups to use in my EVO, well I finally decided on the seymour duncan jb/jazz comb.
I bought black pickups. The rings are cream. This looks funny.
How can I get black pickup rings and make sure they fit like the ones im using now do? Anyway to get them from dean? Or does it even matter?
I've never changed pickups before so it's never been an issue.

hey guys,
havent posted in a while.....
anyways, i am in desperate need for an amp to pair with my Icon SS. I want effects, so i thought it would be a good idea to get like a 15watt combo with built in effects, or i could go with a more basic amp, with more power, say 20-30 watts and buy a multi effexts pedal of some sort. all together, i want to stay under the $200 mark. Any suggestions?
Thanks
