My new Mesa Mark III
by spacebeer on Tue Jun 01, 2004 2:00 pm
OK so I picked up this old Mesa Mark III, just for fun actually but it turns out this is one lethal tone machine...
I never though an amp from the mid 80's would have so much gain, it actually almost rivals the POWERBALL's third channel which is insane!

It is a Blue stripe model which is more focussed on agressive pre amp gain and the poweramp is modelled after the Mark II C+ which is like the mesa holy grail.
Mind you I had a dual recto some time which I quite frankly didn't like much...but this is just an awesome amp.

It is the long chassis version head, LOL can you imagine how ridiculously small a short chassis head would be!
It has a cooling fan for the tubes, simluclass operation which let you run it in class A or A/B.
It can un on a blend of EL34's and 6L6's but currently has 4 6L6's tubes and runs in A/B which most modern high gain amps do.

It has a really good clean channel, but the amp has a few really big drawbacks dor people who demand versatility, it has all shared EQ's and the amps layout is about the most illogical I ever encountered!
All the buttons on the front are push/pull buttons which have two functions, all teh channels (amp has 3 channels!) have shared EQ.

The presence control is on the back and I believe the short chassis versions also have the reverb on the back, it need no less than 3 (!!!!) footswitches to enable you to fully operate it by FS.

It is BTW INCREDIBLY loud, louder than all my ENGL's, it's really insane! there's a 5 band EQ on the front and a built in reverb which both were optional.
There's 4 switches one for the EQ on and off, one for teh half power option to quiet it A LITTLE down, and of course the on and off and standby switches.

The tone controls are really different than with other amps, I was told the EQ knobs are located before the gain stages so in fect e.g. the treble works as a gain boost and the EQ is post gain stages so that in fact helps a lot to shape your tone too!

all in all I still have a lot to discover but the high gain tone I get from it is awesome, reminiscent of course to Metallica's "master of puppets" album but it can just as easily get death metal tone if you wish.
It sounds a lot like the POWERBALL's third channel and is very tight and sensitive to pick attack, unlike what I experienced with recto's.

Advice needed...mainly Strat oriented
by Docter M on Tue Jun 01, 2004 11:28 pm
ok, so i'm ditching the window tinting and going for a guitar. I gave it a lot of thought and i know that i want a SSH config, and that leaves me nothing readilly available in Reno except for the good old Fender Fat Strat (made by only the finest Mexican Luthiers). So how does one of these babies compare to comparably priced guitars. the neck feels real nifty and the overall feel is pretty good. also, i might consider changing the hum, so i'm gonna be looking for a suitable replacement that can perform on clean/light distortion modes. i'm thinking an SD Jazz would do the trick. comments appreciated.
Dean - smaller electronics on korean models?
by ggdChris on Tue Jun 01, 2004 11:57 pm
Sorry to post another question about my Dean Chafin Del Sol (I'm sure many of you guys are sick of this... I apologize).

I need new electronics for it (I'm putting in Dimarzio Virtual PAFs). The toggle switch is much shorter than the standard Gibson ones and more importantly, the potentiometers by famous brands like CTS are too wide at the end to fit through the holes.

At a local guitar store, a man told me right away that these were "japanese parts". He told me to cut costs, companies use smaller, cheaper electrical components. I'm not so sure about huge quality differences. Seems to me that with a guitar that sounds as fine as my Chafin (I really do love it to death), that everything else would be reflected as well as the woods and craftsmanship. I honestly just care about getting something that will fit my guitar and work Smile

I've always heard great things about Dean himself. Perhaps he can chime in on replacement parts. Maybe I can purchase some backup ones from him?

I'm not sure if this electronics problem just pertains to the Chafin models (because of their semi-hollowbody type design - front routed and thin hollow guitars probably call for smaller electronics). I'm hoping there is a place online where I could order some from. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks everyone for their patience, I apologize for all the questions pertaining to this guitar... just trying to get the lowdown on some of the "import" hardware/electronics.

Ebay question
by transblueZ on Wed Jun 02, 2004 11:18 pm
Quick question - When an item has an opening bid, and a Buy it Now bid. Does the Buy it Now always disappear after the initial bid? Or can they set it up either way?

Example

opening bid of $900 - buy it now of $1200
- someone bids $900 and the buy it now of $1200 stays

opening bid of $900 - buy it now of $1200
- someone bids $900 and the buy it now of $1200 is no longer available

are both of these possible? if this post makes any sense.

by papersoul on Thu Jun 03, 2004 8:03 am
Guys, anyone familiar with this process? It appears even a lot of US guitar builders are using this shortcut to make guitars at a faster pace. Apparently this allows a building to quickly get the neck in place and fill in the spaces/gaps with glue, etc! Why not just take your time and get an exact fit.........sure it may cost more but you end up with a better product! Does Dean do this with their US models?? What about the Euro models?? Korean??

Very Bad Things
by Pulse Of The Night on Thu Jun 03, 2004 6:00 pm
I've been up to my ears in messes lately, and my stress level is through the roof becasue of it. Right now I have more problems then what I know what to do with...and they just seem to keep on growing.

*sigh*

My first problem is that I when I got paid last, I told my boss I was done working for him. So I went and deposited my check and things were all fine and dandy until I decided that I should stop spending. What I was going to do is pay my mom and brother back a little bit and spend the rest. It would have been fine had I done that. I lost track of how much I was spending, and now I'm $158 overdrawn to my account. And on top of that prediciment, Julie, my room mate, went on a spending frenzy too, so at the moment, even though rent is paid, we're completely broke until further notice.

With that being bad enough, I'm in more of a mess then that. A friend of mine has been going through marital problems. She found out that her husband has been cheating on her, not once, but three times so far that he admits to. But I've been talking with her and giving her advise becasue I've been through her situation. Things went too far between us though, so right now, I'm more caught up in that particular situation then I'd wish to be. And it wouldn't be so bad if I didn't talk with her on a daily basis. She really needs me right now, and not just for grox. But she confides in me becasue I've been through the same situation. And she also really has no one else to turn to.

So for right now, I'm seriously thinking about just going and working in a fish processing plant for the summer.

Dean Takes Care Of The '79 ML Mess!
by JA Allen on Fri Jun 04, 2004 10:38 am
If some were following my 79 ML purchase in another thread, heres the scoop.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3727539743&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

They had an auction for 79 RI ML's, the pictures showed a fixed 79 ML, updated pickups and fixed crotch and switch horn.

What they sent me was an old version.

I emailed them and called them, emailed 3 times in fact, left messages twice, I wanted to return it, as it was not the model pictured for one (False Photos) and not what I wanted and paid for.

They have returned no calls or emailed me back. I was professional in my approach on the phone and in the emails, they did not return calls or email.

I am now stuck with this thing and very dissapointed, had it been truthful, I would have gone elsewhere for what I wanted.
Im very dissapointed, and now, i dont want to bother with selling the thing, and negative feedback to them will result in me probably getting negative feedback to.

I should have waited for Dave or Rob.

Okay, Okay the site is still far from finished, and I surprised that this got as good as it did, IMHO.

A lot of chages are taking place, First I am not using Korean built computer towers (first, is the www.gmc.co.kr doesn't ship overseas). I am using ATX premodied towers instead. Also the url will change once the site has opened. It will become a .com addy when that happens (cool). Also I have put the opening back until I get the storefront open. (Yes, I said storefront) the exact address that I am looking to lease is Suite 223, Irving Park Rd, Streamwood, IL 60107. a realiter shot me a good deal on the space I am interested in.
Aerosmith / Cheap Trick concert tonight!!
by Brave Dave on Sat Jun 05, 2004 1:02 am
Just got back from a killer show. Cheap Trick went on at 7:30 and they were as entertaining as ever. The crowd was not as responsive as I would have expected, though. Rick Neilsen was a bit hacked at the end. His tech handed him the wrong guitar on the last song. He gave the tech a bit of a lecture and when he went to the mic, the sound guy had him off. Rick tried to speak three different times and finally gave up....no encore, I don't blame him.
Aerosmith had a runway with a small stage at the end about 60 feet out into the audience and opened with Toys in the Attic. Our seats were just a few feet from them and it was pretty cool. They were being taped for A&E and the show was top notch all the way. It's hard to believe they are still rocking this hard after over 30 years. Steven Tyler hasn't lost his touch and he still hits every single note perfect. I saw Aerosmith in the summer of 1975 when Toys in the Attic was released and they are just as good now as they were then. If their show comes to your town, it's worth the money. Don't miss it!
Crossroads Festival - Friday night review
by kevphol on Sat Jun 05, 2004 12:55 pm
I'm stuck at home today (missing some great shows but playing some music myself tonight) so I thought I would give you guys a review of last night.

This is being held at Fair Park in Dallas in two main buildings with an outdoor stage in between. (no shows on the main stage last night) The first building has all of the music store booths with tons of guitars everywhere. Looked awesome walking in until I started checking prices. No deals to be found here. Did see a few Deans scattered around but nothing too interesting except for an '81 V with a V neck profile, but it was kinda beat up.

Second building contains all of the manufacturer booths and two more stages. Everything you can imagine, guitars, basses, effects, amps, software - all set up for you to play! Lots of freebies too, like pics, string winders, even t-shirts. The fender booth had SRVs "number one". Didn't see a Dean booth, but I was wearing my "Take your pick" Dean t-shirt. So Paul Reed Smith himself was signing autograghs in his booth and I go up (in my Dean t-shirt) and ask for his autograph on one of his catalogs. Then I told him I started to ask for his auto. on my Dean T-shirt! He just looks at me and goes "That would be interesting!" We all kinda got a chuckle.

First act last night was Chris Polland (former Megadeth guy) with his fusion group OHM. Chris was amazing as was his bass and drummer. Lots of very funky all over the place fusion with some cool bluesy stuff mixed in as well. Next on a smaller stage was Pete Huttlinger, Lawrence Juber (formerly with Wings) and Doyle Dykes - all acoustic finger picking pros. These guys were incredible on acoustics. Finally back on the larger stage was a blues jam with Robert Lockwood Jr (stepson of Robert Johnson) and Honeyboy Edwards (a close friend of Robert Johnson). These guys looked to be 100 yrs old but sounded great playing that old Delta blues. Probably the closest thing to seeing Robert Johnson himself.

Rumor had it that Clapton was in the building last night but I never saw him. Crowd was probably only 300-400, not bad at all. Overall was just terriffic. Can't wait to go back tomorrow!

SD Hotrails wiring help
by Lon on Sat Jun 05, 2004 5:18 pm
Hey all, I've got a 4 wire (red/white/black/green) Hotrail pup here and the wiring diagram from their website makes no sense to me. This is going into a normal SSS strat bridge position, with 1 vol and 2 tones pots. It says take the red and white wire and solder them together, but doesn't say what to do with them then. For the green wire it just says "green and bare". WTF? The black wire actually shows a solder point on the first spot of the 5 way switch. Help?

by CherryBurstV on Sat Jun 05, 2004 10:28 pm
Let's get some opinions here. What album has your favorite guitar tone? Remember this is guitar tone only, not favorite players or bands, just tone. Nothing to do with whether you like the player, band or music. This is based on GUITAR TONE ONLY...
Mine are:
1. VH1
2. Cinderella - Long Cold Winter
3. Tesla - Great Radio Controversy
4. Black Crowes - Shake your money maker
5. Gary Moore - Cold day in hell
6. any KWS
7. REO Speedwagon-You can tune a piano, but you can't tune a fish

I was browsing a thread about Japanese ESPs on Guitargeek.com and came across these.

Ok...it's Bolt on fer one thing, the body looks like a cheap painted one you'd buy from Warmoth and is made of Alder, shItty looking maple neck with BLACK dots, fubared looking headstock (words can't explain it) and a really weak looking ghost flame decal. The only partially redeeming feature are the Duncan pups and the Original Floyd if you're into that kinda thing (not that there's anything wrong with that...hehehe)

Now adding it all up if you DID buy this from Warmoth you would prolly end up paying about $800, maybe a little extra fer the Duncans and the Floyd, and even then if you went really thrifty and used Ebay for parts and stuff you could have it for a bit less. But no, ESP Japan want 346000 Yen. Current US Dollar Conversion...

Over $3000 US!!!!

AC/DC To Have Melbourne Street Named In Their Honor - June 7, 2004

CNN.com is reporting that AC/DC could soon stroll down a lane named in their honor, city officials in the southern Australian city of Melbourne have said.

Melbourne City Council is considering renaming Corporation Lane, a narrow downtown alley, AC/DC Lane as a tribute to the band.

"They are probably the most successful Australian band ever and they really do have a connection to Melbourne," said council city services committee chairwoman Kimberly Kitching on Monda.

One of the band's famous video clips, for the song "It's A Long Way to the Top", was filmed on the back of a truck in a Melbourne street.

"I don't think there would be many who wouldn't know that film clip where they are playing on the back of flatbed truck along Swanson Street," Kitching said.

She said the name change proposal came about because Melbourne's rock and roll community was looking for a fitting tribute to the band.

"The area around the lane is full of rock and roll bars and I think it would be a fitting place for the tribute."

Kitching said the naming of the lane would be an alternative to giving the band keys to the city.

"We have recently tightened up our keys to the city program, but in the past we have given them to NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK and DOLLY PARTON."

She said the council would make a decision on the name change within the next month, but it had already received broad community support.

AC/DC already has a street named after it in Madrid, Spain.

Hope for Metallica?

http://www.virtualfestivals.com/festivals/article.cfm?articleid=1079

Apparently Lars was 'sick' so couldn't do the download festival (Donington), so the rest of metallica went on with an assortment of peoples, including the guy from slipknot....

"...Next up was Slipknot's Joey Jordison, and then something magical happened. Surging into 'Whiplash', the remaining band members were unable to contain their smiles as it quickly became apparent that the small, demure figure behind the kit was not so much their salvation, as their hero of the day.

As his confidence grew, Jodison began to add his own flavour, improvising thundering fills over 'Creep and Death' and 'Seek and Destroy', much to the glee of beaming guitarist Kirk Hammett. After a brief and not-entirely-successful attempt by drum tech Flemming to cover on a ropey 'Fade to Black', plans to bring on Life of Agony's Sal Abruscato and bring back Lombardo and Flemming were swiftly aborted. Metallica had found their drummer for the night!"

Sounds cool. Obviously this reporter doesn't know their old school metallica.

Here are my recollections and highlights - not everybody included here, and probably leaving a lot out, but you should get the idea.

First up- Neal Schon with Johnathon Cain. Cool version of Star Spangled Banner and jammed on two other tunes playing a black Les Paul custom with a Floyd.

Steve Via - did his thing and was impressive as always - did a cool thing with two other guitarist and a bassist lined up side by side with each picking their own guitar but with their hands on the neck of the person's guitar in front of them.

Larry Carlton - with his big band sounded great on "Josie" and others

Pat Methany - did his very cool funky smooth jazz

John McLaughlin - playing a guitar running through a laptop sitting on a stand on the stage! Very wild fusion stuff from him. (with Neal Schon standing offstage gettin' in to it)

Joe Walsh – looked like a big freakin’ duck (or clown) in a funky hat, lime green shirt, black pants and big bright yellow tennis shoes. He was awesome. He was backed by Booker T and the MGs and he gets on stage and looks around to the band and goes “OK, everybody play lead and when everything is broken we’re done!” Then he jammed on “Seems to me”. He dedicated a song to “Everybody who has never had a song dedicated to them.” He also played “Rocky mountain way”.

James Taylor – was very toned down with only him, keys, bass and drums. The highlight was actually Joe Walsh coming out and joining him on “Steam Roller”.

Buddy Guy – was at first thought a no show, so Jimmie Vaughn came back out with his band and started playing basic blues to kill time, when out walked BB King who sat down in a chair at the front of the stage. So Jimmie sat down next to him and they played a couple of tunes (with Clapton watching backstage). Then Clapton comes out and sits down and then Buddy Guy shows up and sits down. So the four of them just improvise blues tunes for about 35 or 40 minutes. John Mayer then joins them for a couple more tunes. Then BB and Clapton leave and Buddy Guy takes over at starts tearing it up with John Mayer and a stagehand starts signaling to Buddy to stop. Buddy ignores him for a while then finally ends the tune. At this point it is after 8:00 and Santana has been standing on the center stage watching all this on stage left for about 25 minutes. Santana was supposed to go on at 7:00.

Santana jams for only 30 minutes (he was supposed to play 1 hour) then Clapton joined him for his last tune. Santana played his PRS signatures of course, but he changed guitars like 10 times in a 30 minute set, sometimes even in the middle of a song. We were joking that those $$$$$$$ PRSs must not stay in tune!

Clapton was next (with Doyle Bramhall II) and first played some acoustic blues stuff then jammed on Layla, Cocaine, I Shot the Sheriff, Wonderful Tonight, etc. He was great. His speed and playing overall has improved a bunch over the years, as has his vocals. Then Jeff Beck joined him for 1 cool Beck instrumental tune. Wish he had played more.

Lastly, ZZ Top took the stage a little after 11:00. They started with Gimme All Your Lovin’. They also played “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide”, “Sharp Dressed Man”, “Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers”, some blues, and La Grange. Gibbons was playing some kind of Gretch that he said Muddy Waters gave him. They also played the "fuzzy" guitars, but they didn't look like Deans.

Overall an amazing weekend! Hope Clapton decides to do this again. The whole thing will probably end on on CD and DVD, as there were film crews and the works there!

Anyone see the Ozzfest challenge for unsigned band thing?
by transblueZ on Tue Jun 08, 2004 1:38 am
on www.ozzfest.com they're having a contest for an unknown/unsigned band to get a shot to play the main stage at Ozzfest this summer. This peaked my interest being the interview then auditions are an hour or so away. Until I read the application form......looks like they are going to make this some reality tv show and you need to be free for 3 monthes this summer to tour with the Ozzfest thing and take place in "non musical" challenges I believe was how they put it.

Pawnshop find
by Lon on Tue Jun 08, 2004 3:31 pm
I've been looking at this at a local pawnshop for over a year, but they wanted $199 and would never deal. It was covered in stickers and was one of the filthiest guitars I've ever seen. When it forst came in though I played it and knew it was nice under all that crap. I went in the other day and it was down to $100, but alas no cash on me. Went back Sunday and it was $70! Mine mine mine. Did my usual teardown/clean/rebuild and it turned out even better than I had hoped. Alder body, string thru the body, cream binding, gold hardware, pearl pickguard, and the neck is the darkest rosewood I've ever seen. I'm pretty pleased. Duh, forgot to say it's a Yamaha 302s.

Dynamo!!!
by AngelOfDeath on Tue Jun 08, 2004 6:33 pm
Hey there everyone!!

I've been busy these past gew weeks, so I haven't been around for a while. Anyhow, I was at Dynamo open air last Saturday. The weather wasn't great, but there was enough beer and the music was ABOLUTELY kickass!! Here's the list of the bands that played:

Stage 1:
Shadow's Fall
Ill Nino
Children of Bodom
Soulfly
Life of Agony
Nightwish
Slayer

Stage 2:
Mastodon
Deicide
Oomph!!
After Forever
Agent Steel
Dimmu Borgir

Shadows Fall started the day, and I can only say that they weren't bad, it's just not my kind of music. I can say the same about Ill Nino, I didn't bother watching the whole show. I couldn't watch Mastodon, I was too busy getting beer, LOL. Deicide was excellent!! Class A death metal. I went to the other stage for Children of Bodom halfway through their show. C.O.B. really blew me away. Their show was energetic!! It really exceeded my expectations. I watched Oomph!! for a couple of minutes. A BAD BAD Rammstein copy, IMO. Soulfly was OK. I'm not really into that new Cavalera material, but they sure got my attention when they played old skool Sepultura songs, Mass Hypnosis and Chaos A.D. to be exact. I had high hopes about After Forever, but the singer was really disappointing. The music is really good, only the singer ruins it. I don't think she can sing consistently if her life depended on it. Most shameful moment: covering Iron Maiden's The Evil That Men Do. If Bruce was there, he might've smacked her real hard. Nightwish was a lot better. The difference in class between AF's singer and Nightwish's was clearly audible. Nice pyrotechnics in the show too!! Agent Steel was awesome!! I didn't know the band before last Saturday, but they really kicked serious ass back there!! Classic thrash at it's finest!! Dimmu Borgir was excellent!! I was always sceptical about "black metal" bands, I never believed they could reproduce the music they put in the cd's. Well, I can only say that Dimmu Borgir is probably one of the best live act I've ever seen. The day's final act was Slayer. I was warned before about the notorious Slayer pit, I didn't see one. I really believe they deserved a pit for such a great show!! Overall, the day was a success. Bands that really blew me away: Children of Bodom, Agent Steel, Dimmu Borgir and Slayer. I couldn't be happier Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Anybody listen to these guys? I stumbled upon this CD at a bookstore listening station, and bought it.

I know, you can say that the vocals are a bit @#$%&$@. But there's some heavy stuff goin' on, and some good guitar. Drums, too.

My son says they're classified as emo. I think they really fit into a prog rock/prog metal type genre.

Very reminiscent of Rush.

Ray Charles dead at 73
by smoke67 on Thu Jun 10, 2004 4:47 pm
"BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- Ray Charles, the blind singer and piano player who erased musical boundaries with classic hits such as What'd I Say, Hit the Road Jack and the melancholy ballad Georgia on My Mind, died Thursday. He was 73.

Charles died of acute liver disease at his Beverly Hills home at 11:35 a.m., surrounded by family and friends, said spokesman Jerry Digney.

The Grammy winner's last public appearance was alongside Clint Eastwood on April 30, when the city of Los Angeles designated the singer's studios, built 40 years ago in central Los Angeles, as a historic landmark. "

He will be missed.

It Seems The Worm Has Finally Turned
by Dr. Larry Breiden on Fri Jun 11, 2004 8:50 pm
Well, in case you haven't been keeping up with me lately (and why, pray tell, would you ever f*ckin' want to? If you have been then you're more in need of a life than I am!) your ol' pal Doc has been working at Guitar Center in Oxford Valley PA makin' deals happen. The Greatest Effin' Job in the World if you don't mind a little poverty.

But anyway, something rather subtle has been happening...something that brings me great hope for the future. We get a lot of kids coming into the store ages 16 on up. They come in and plug the Gibson and Epi Les Pauls and SG's into the Marshall and Mesa half stacks, the Strats and Teles into the Super Reverbs and Twins and they play....CLASSIC ROCK...OLD SCHOOL METAL...BLUES! Not one NuMetal player among them! Parents come in to buy their kids their first electric guitar and when I ask 10 year old Johnny what kind of music he listens to he replies "ACDC" or "Zeppelin" or "Jimi Hendrix". IS THIS AWESOME OR WHAT!!!!! I did have a couple of wankers come in the other day and said they only listened to Korn, but they smelled kinda bad and couldn't really use words with more than one syllable, so I handed them a couple of cheap guitars to bang on and moved on.

So I have to listen to "Crazy Train" and "Hell's Bell's" and "Little Wing" and "Stairway to Heaven" being massacred about a hundred times a day...SO WHAT? It gives me great hope that Rock n' Roll ain't ever gonna die!

Your pal,

Doc

p.s. If you ever find yourself in Oxford Valley stop on by and say "Hi".

Speaker Question(s)
by transblueZ on Sat Jun 12, 2004 2:24 am
How difficult is it to replace speakers in a cabinet? I have 2 4x12 cabs. I'm pretty sure they both have generic - pretty old speakers (both Crate cabs, one bought in 1986 and the other in 1990)
I would think it wouldn't be a difficult task to buy some new speakers and upgrade them.

Why are the name brand cabinets so expensive, when they have 4 speakers in them that generally cost about $100 each? And any recommendations on specific speakers ?

SLAYER SHOW REVIEW
by Jan Haaÿer on Sat Jun 12, 2004 6:06 pm
I just got back for seeing slayer last night in Mocton N.B. Lets just say I'm finding it very hard to talk and I have master the word " WHAT " becasue me hearing is very bad.

We got to the show 5 hours early to ensure a good spot on the floor. We ( Kristy and my friend Ryan ) meet some really cool people and talked metal for the whole 5 hour wait. Thou I must say, drugs can make you very stupid. I saw some dudes do some really below 70 IQ type things and there was this one girl who had way to much to smoke and WAY to much to drink. she was running around talking her top off and falling down and trying to get on ever one there and to top it off I think she was maybe 14 at the most.

Any who aftter 5 and half hours of waiting the cops got the pot dogs out and walked up and down the line a few times to find the goods. It was funny to see about half the line all reach for their croutch at the same time to conseal their smoke.

on a side note, where the show was, the builden had a hockey rink on one side and a convention center on the other. last night was the opening night of a large yard sale. It was a very sad day in metal to see the line up for a lard sale was 3 times longer then the line up to see Slayer. IT was very funny to see about 30 old people stading in a Slayer line up thinking it was the line up for the yard sale. I guess the slayer T's and pot smoke was not enough of a hint.

Any way We got in side and searched. After Kristy and Ryan cleared we ran like Mo'Fo's to the front!!! thats right we were to the right of the stare right where Jeff would stand!! It was sweet.

So there were many rumors to who were going to open for slayer that night. some people heard that bucket truck were going to open and some heard hatebreed well all rumors were put to rest when we looked at the banner hanging behind the drum set!!
DAMAGEPLAN!!!! thats right I was going to Hear Dimebag kick my ass!!! I was off the wall.

next thing I know Vinnie jumps over the drum kit sticks in the air, Rob Zillia comes walking out in front of me and gives me the evil eye and the next thing I remember is Dimebag playing this little killer riff and then Damageplan starts their set with Wake up and I could feel my in sides being beating by the wall of sound! It was amazing! Vinnie's bass drums was blowing the roof off. Pats vocals were stong and clear. Robs bass was deep and ball shacking and Dimebag...........need I was say anything...its Dimebag he kicked ass! after 2 songs Dimebag come over to our side. I almost sh!t my self! I'm at a lost for words, I can't explane it. after the fact I wish I would have had a Dean Flag to wave at him to see his reaction.

Damageplan put on a killer show they really got us into it and played off of us. In a Pantera style Dimebag mixed drinks for some lucky memebers of the show and guess who got a Dimebag speical........thats rights ME.. Rob zilla handed it to me. I ended up wearning more then what I drank but thats ok.

Mid way throu the set Rob Zilla handed me his bass pick. I guess he saw I was really digging Damageplan.

After Damage plan played their songs Dimebag got on the mike and said a few words that will change my life forever he said and I qoute ".. I see a lot of old Pantara shrits out there tonight, I just have a few words to say about that, Vinnie and I never turned our F**king backs on you guys, you want to hear some of that classic Sh!t"

next thing I know My ass is being kicked by Pantera. They played Walk and then New level to end their show! It was total kick ass!! Rod Zilla tossed a hand full of picks out over my head. Kristy got one and Ryan also got on.

On a side note about Damageplan, Pat and Vinnie were going out back of the building every hour before the show to sign stuff for who every was there. I never made it but lots of people did.

After about 20 minutes of tear down from Damgeplan the Slayer stage was set.

All of sudden the lights went out and Darkness of Christ ( Intro for "God hates us all " ) started playing which of courst lead into Disciple. It was very hard to belive that Jeff was infront of me. Kerry was 20 feet to my right and Jeff was even closer. By now Kristy and I were going to little beat up. there were 5 guys around me that were all looking out for each other and were trying to keep the f**kers from making their way to the front. the show was wild the gate we were behind got knocked forward about 4 feet and the show had to be stopped to get it fixed. no one wanted to move back from the broken spot. So this one old dude come over to our side and started yell to " Move F**king back " and I reply with " I can't Move back you F**king C**T " lets just say I spent the rest of the show in the back. I needed to get Kristy out of there we were both doing all we could to keep our spot and fighting for all we were worth. I think it was for the best we left and headed to a safer spot becasue I was getting very wild. there was this one dude who keep pulling at Kristy to move her and a few times tryed to elbow her in the face. We ( me and the 3 other pissed off mother f**Kers ) we knew this icehole was trying to make his way to the front by any means. and I know that any means ment puching a girl in the face to get there so I was on my way to leveing this mother F**ker when Kristy and Ryan pulled me back and off we went to safer spot. So we made it through 1/4 of the slayer set up front. I'm happy with that.

Slayer played for 2 hours. They only played maybe 12 songs before angle of death ( the closing song ) after a 5 minute brake Slayer came back out to play all of the "Reign In Blood" album as an oncore. It was totaly wild.

I'm going to say that the show was totaly wild and kicked ass from the first note to the last. But I fell that Damageplan had the better show but far. Slayer had the better songs but I was not into it as much and I was with Damageplan or as I like to call them now , "New Pantera"

Cheap Trick & Trickfest 3
by tess on Sun Jun 13, 2004 10:54 am
I found this pic from August of 1999 which was taken during Trickfest 3. Trickfest is where Cheap Trick and members of their fan club get together for a couple of days of fun. The band played two nights for its fans, including one night of all cover material which represented tunes they mixed in with their original tunes before they broke big. This event culminated with their 25th Anniversary Show of 3 sets which included a symphony orchestra and many guest artists which was recorded on DVD. This pic is of the band, road crew, management and fans. For those of you that know the band, can you spot Rick, Robin, Bun & Tom?

Hi guys !

I bought that guitar a few months ago and I have a question about the neck.

Do these guitars have the V shaped neck I read about the USA made ones ?

I'm thinking they are not, and since I never played any other Dean before, I'd really like to know, cause I thought I'd maybe get a USa Dean someday, but if it is the same as my guit, I may reconsider my decision..

thanks a lot !

VH show review
by CherryBurstV on Mon Jun 14, 2004 3:06 pm
Had the pleasure of seeing Van Halen last night in Hershey PA. I was really pumped to see this show, and they delivered. BIG TIME!In the beginning they just strolled out on stage. Then Sammy comes over the mic with a huge HEEELLLOOO BAAAABYYYYY, then da da da dadada da right in to Jump. Eddie had some sort of stupid a$$ pony tail off the top of his head, (think Counting Crows singer). Sammy later acted like he was gonna cut it off. Eddie was, of coarse, playing his signature Wolfgang, but in a cherryburst color, NICE! Ed's solo was the typical Cathedral, 316, Eruption, but with new added jamming, awesome!. At first Eddie was a little rusty sounding, but recovered quickly. That could have been the sound guy too. During Ain't Talkin Bout Love, later in the show, Ed's guitar goes out of tune. He gave Sammy an ooops face and the camers happened to be on him, so it came over the huge screens. He had trouble getting it back in tune, but eventually did. I thought it was cool to see such a huge icon have the same problems we all have on stage. Kinda made him a normal dude, human, something I could identify with. Sammy clad in his signature yellow and red threads did Eagles Fly and Deeper kinda Love by himself. Sammy was pumped! Lots of compliments to the band and crowd for sticking with them. His voice sounded great. Michael Anthony did a bass solo with his Jack Daniels bass, as usual. He did do a few bars of the Star Spangled Banner. That was really cool. That guys back up vocals are amazing. Alex had a triple bass drum set that looked like 10 sets put together. Over all I was extremely impressed with thier performance and attitude. They gave each other alot of compliments. Sammy said several times, "there's lots of love up here tonight", and you could tell. Lots of hanging on each other while playin, that sort of thing. Even Eddie was on the mic saying "it feels so f#$%ing good to be up here again" and "how good it felt to be back with everyone." That was probably the best part of the show was seeing them get along SO well. And it came through in there performance. Made you feel good to be there. During Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Michael Anthony took over lead vocals to the suprise of Sammy. Sammy just leaned back and watched with a huge smile. If there was a down side to this show I'd have to say it was very close to the Balance tour as far as set list, solos etc. But with that tour being all but 10 years ago I had no problem seeing it again. I think the thing I will remember most about this show was how much fun they had. It seemed very UNrehersed, which was great!

We played! We THRASHED! and now i have questions.
by PhantomXT on Mon Jun 14, 2004 4:18 pm
Slaghammer played 2 times on saturday and the response we got surpassed any of our expectations!
We tore it up at 2 battles the same day and it opened so many doors for us....

We didn't win because of the judges, and the fact that first prize was a gig at the yuma tavern which is a country bar, but if it was by crowd response, we did great!

Now I have a question for the WORKING musicians here...
We have an opportunity to play the city's summer music fest with WARRANT in july, along with some other good bands. {i know they're kinda small time nowadays but this is HUGE for us, and our small community really embraces these shows.}

The catch is that in order to get booked we have to sell $2000 worth of tickets for promo purposes... {we are gonna be responsible for em as soon as we leave mega music with these tix}

That's a ton of pavement pounding for us, and I was wondering if it's a good idea to put ourselves in this position with less than a month to do it in a town of 15,000 ppl.

Do you think it's even possible?
I really need some input cause we're all kinda nervous about the whole thing.

Here's some SLAG pics from saturday by the way...

So what is my EVO SS made of?? Damned good question!!
by Mike9 on Mon Jun 14, 2004 5:06 pm
I was doing some mods to my recently aquired EVO SS and much to my chagrin there is no maple cap under the veneer top!!!! In fact I was hard pressed to call the schwarf from milling mahogany!!! Don't know what the body is made of, but it's very light in color and soft, soft, soft - and no there is no solid maple cap under the quilt veneer. The "natural" wood binding is merely the light colored "mahogany wanna-be" that's how light the wood is. Maybe Mick can weigh in on this one???? Shocked

This would explain the extra warmth these guitars exhibit - hopefully the set of Pearly Gates I'm putting in it will brighten it up some. I'd post pics, but I'm on dial up on an ancient laptop Mad

Rush 30th Cleveland Show
by Wayne_S on Tue Jun 15, 2004 3:28 pm
Rush Rush Rush !! All I can say is that was the best show Ive ever seen! This is the 9th time Ive seen Rush live. Im sure Im biased here because we were in the 6th row center. We were in the show not just watching. Not only did we get the main PA mix but good bit of it was the on stage volume. That put a different spin on the whole deal Very Happy

I dont want to spoil it for any who are going to an upcoming show in there town but you who are attending plenty of treats are in store, like the band is saying good bye. The show was 3 hours with a 20 minute intermission and the guys start on time! They do play some numbers from the upcoming Feedback CD out later this month!

If you have never been to a Rush show I urge you to check them out this time cause its probally the last. I hope not but Im going to see the Phx show on the 16th of July.

Rush is by far amazing and thanks to Korgman for turning me on to them back in 1980 Very Happy

I used to hate the way this head looked. The plate looked so cheesy in that brushed chrome motif. I wanted something that would match the hardass sound that she puts out. Pic makes it look splotchy but it's really not.

Saw Eric Clapton last night
by DIMEBAG JOE on Wed Jun 16, 2004 6:12 pm
What a phenominal show. People can brag about how good a band is live but there is no bragging. It was Eric Clapton, enough said. I didn't know who was opening until we got there, but to my surprise it was someone I was wanting to see anyways. If anyone has never heard of Robert Randolf and the Family Band you are missing something. He plays a lap steel guitar but sounds like a mix between Jimi Hendrix and Steve Vai. Unreal. If they come to your town do yourself a favor and go. Its amazing how fast 3 hours go by when you are watching something that amazing.
Fernandes Sustainer system
by Lon on Wed Jun 16, 2004 9:29 pm
Anyone got any experience with this thing? I figured the little toggle on my Fernendes was just an active/passive switch, but I cracked open the guitar today to give it a good clean and lo and behold it's actually the Sustainer system in there. I read up a little on their site and it seems to be quite the little gizmo, actually keeping the strings vibrating via emitting magnetic pulses. Mine is the 2 position (off/on) style. I don't think it's working quite right though. Problem is my pup selector switch isn't working unless the Sustainer switch is in the on position. When in the "on" position, the guitar gets a whole lot louder, but in the "off" position the pup selector switch does nothing. In either position the Sustainer power light doesn't come on. Time to get it checked by a pro I supose.
Active Pickups
by Mailman on Wed Jun 16, 2004 10:44 pm
what kind does everyone prefer? (combo if possible)

when i get my caddy (some day...)

i think im gonna put an emg-85 in the bridge, and a seymour duncan live wire classic in the neck. i dunno, i love how clear yet powerful they are. not a fan of the metal duncan cuz its just way too muddy and overdriven, and the emg 81/60 are the same.

So who needs Tone Pros - made my own - Pics are up!
by Mike9 on Wed Jun 16, 2004 11:13 pm
Well I'm putzing around with this Evo SS and it's a nicely made guitar it just needs some help is all. So I was checking out Tone Pros stuff at StewMac.com and thought to myself - "hey I can do that" . . . . and I did. Pics coming tomorrow - now what I did was get a #4/40 tap and the correct drill bit, chucked it into my trusty 1946 foot feed Delta drill press set on the lowest speed and did the job. I'll probably go to a #6 tap & screw for because they are more readily available. Then because the bridge is curved I had to hold the bit straight with a dowel till it "bit" then it was clear drilling all the way. I chucked the Tail Piece into my vice and drilled by hand. Then I used a 4/40 tap to make my own locking bridge and tail piece. You could drill the bridge by hand too, but I used the available technology Very Happy - hey I'll do this for anyone for the $15 each for a bridge and/or tail piece including set screws & wrench. Considering a Tone Pros setup is $54 and $66 respectively + shipping I think that's a bargain. BTW - I used a GOTOH Tune-O-Matic - it has same post spacing & a wider intonation/saddle/travel span and is made in Japan (better than the MIK stuff on stock MIK Deans OK?)

If you want to buy a bridge, or set and have it sent to me that's cool - saves you the turn around time.

With some imagination and a little patience you can do more Cool
Lefty Hardtails?
by Sebastian on Thu Jun 17, 2004 5:26 am
Each time I walk by my local guitar store, I can't help but drool all over the lovely Dean Hardtails displayed there. I recently heard someone play it too, and it sounded awesome. Just the kind of sound I was looking for.

However, being he left-handed player I simply can't be very picky about the guitars I like/want. I already own a Dean EVO SS which I'm very happy with - especially considering its price. Several of the axes I liked most though, are not availible left-handed. I know the Hardtail is a relatively new model and I also know there are currently no left-handed versions of it. Does anyone here know if Dean has any future plans to also produce a lefty Hardtail? Cause maybe by the time they start bringing them out I'll have saved up enough cash to get me one of those babies!

Is it just me, or does this Hammer have a few faults?

What I see is a largish gap in the neck pocket, misaligned machine head, and the biggy - a misaligned bridge or neck. If my eyes aren't deceiving me, I'm not sure how this got past QC. Sad

It's a shame, because it looks quite nice otherwise. If it was a neckthrough, I'd be GAS-ing for it. I can't wait to see some USA Dean basses so we can finally get a TC quality instrument. Twisted Evil

Pics of recently built guitars
by Mike9 on Thu Jun 17, 2004 12:42 pm
Wow nice having DSL again Very Happy Here are links to pics of some guitars I built in the past few months.

The Jagmaster started out silver sparkle - yuk! Shot it in Fiesta Red, made the mint green PG, adapted a vintage Mexican bridge w/Callaham steel block and filled the PG with Dimarzio DLX Soapbars & custom wiring - they scream when cranked!!!

The Fiesta Red Strat was three tone burst - now has aged pearloid PG, filled with Bill Lawrence L-500XL & L-500R pups - wired for 9 tones. Solid brass Hipshot bridge with steel block = tone, tone, tone. The neck is a Warmoth neck with a Clapton profile and full scalloped fretboard w/6100 stainless steel frets - smooth as glass. My guitar teacher bought this from me & he loves it!! I'm starting to get work from his friends Cool

The Blond Strat has 3-1/2 lb. Swamp Ash body, a Legend neck with killer flame & ebony fretboard, "Hot" Noiseless pups, vintage USA trem, Sperzels, etc. Killer action on this baby and a whole lot of tone!!

The Fiesta Red Relic Hardtail has a Birdseye maple Warmoth neck with 6105 stainless frets, Texas Specials and more MoJo than decent people need Wink This is now owned by the guy who gave me that killer feedback Very Happy

The Surf Green Relic Hardtail also has a warmoth neck and a mix of Fender vintage single coils. I did all the aging on the bodies, necks, & accesories. All these guitars play extremely well and sound great!!!

Anyone play a Baritone guitar?
by Mike9 on Fri Jun 18, 2004 9:05 pm
Just curious about 'em - Warmoth has some nice Baritone Conversion necks and I was toying with the idea of redoing this other Jagmaster I got this week in Seafoam Green with a Baritone neck w/matching headstock. It would make a killer rhythm guitar - What's the verdict and what pickups are apropriate? Summer is short and I'm just trying to save research time here - Wink

Saw G3 last night
by liipotin on Sat Jun 19, 2004 6:29 am
Yeah, they played here yesterday.

The gig started with Robert Fripp playing this guitar synth or what ever and I must ask why was he in this?? He sounded like whales having grox for 45mins! Absolutely the most boring 25 mins in a concert ever. the remaining time of his set I was drinking beer outside and I wasn't the only one who was suffering because of this. He's tone was really crappy too or more like the lack of guitar sound.

Next up was Steve Vai. He is a monster player and his band was awesome! Tony McAlpine on guitar and Billy Sheenan on bass, kickass! I'm not a fan of Vai, so I didn't know any songs he played. But overall nice display of techique.

Then it was Joe Satriani's turn, He played thru the new JSX Peavey and he had the best tone of the evening. I enjoyed he's playing the most. He's songs sounded more like "normal" songs than Vai's.

They closed the evening with a 4 song jam including Satriani's band with Vai and Fripp. This time Fripp actually played guitar, but his sound was very bad and it was buried in the mix. He can play tough very nicely.

All in all it was a bit too long for me(3 hours 40 mins) for not being a fan of any players. It was nice to see them play, but I think this was my first and last G3 concert.

I've had with my Randall, I'm going to sell it. The gain channel is fried or something, so screw it, I'm getting a new amp. What does everyone reccomend? I only have $600can max. I'd like something with as much gain as the Randall, just better quality.

Thanks!
Brainstorm - Help me out Bro's...
by Grumpy Goat on Sun Jun 20, 2004 1:15 am
Our band needs a new Bass player. A couple here have already heard the story but now I need advice.

I've put up ads but that only seems to attract inexperienced kids who have no gear and just wanna have 'fun' Rolling Eyes and I've also tried my other trick of calling around talking to teachers to see if there are any promising students/ex students/friends who are after a gig but alas...no gear and one teacher actually asked if he could join as second guitarist (no deal...we just don't need it).

So what am I missing here? We have the material (all original), we have the drive and the moxy, the marketing and promo experience, good management and mondo dedication...all we need is a Bass Player who wants to put in 110%. We are so close I can almost taste it, so any ideas on finding a Bass Player? Where are you guys hiding?
Hmm, some things of late
by Dischord on Sun Jun 20, 2004 1:33 am
Well, they finally made me so angry I turned down promotion to sergeant so will be going into civilian life next year...yep, that's all true...some of the blatant stupidity around here is so bad that it makes you want to strangle yourself...I'm tired of being treated like I'm six years old and need my hand held everywhere I go...

On a much lighter note...my laptop I ordered in January finally came through...it was supposedly shipped February 10 or so, but that one never arrived, so they sent another in April, still a no show, but the one I got for some reason was shipped from Killeen TX on June 10th...which I was told they only shipped from their Colorado warehouse (so that was misleading)...the plus side, it has ONE thing on it that wasn't in the contract, at no charge (for the wait)...a DVR/CDR drive...hehehehe, so I can burn DVD's now...

OK, I'm done ranting
Hmm, a silly question
by Dischord on Sun Jun 20, 2004 1:42 am
OK, since we've ascertained that the plonker is Dave (president type)...
And he's a meber as well...well would he not also be a remeber since he had to reregister? Thus making him the most dangerous man on the forum? As the chief of plonkerism, mebership, and remebership...

And then there's jim...the countermeber...or remeber in Dave's case...

And is Dave's fist really goo?
Got the Probot CD in

The first four songs are kickass...
Centuries of Sin with Cronos
Red War with Max Cavalera
Shake Your Blood with Lemmy
Not sure, but I think it's the one from DRI
And track 11 (Sweet Dreams with King Diamond) of course is a keeper, and there's a bonus track hidden deep in track 11...not sure about the details but it's pretty kickass too!

Plan 607 & CRANKDADDY rock the house, Dean style!
by crankdaddy on Mon Jun 21, 2004 8:18 am
Here's the coolest thing about being on a forum like this:

Meeting very cool people like A.D.

Earlier this year, he saw that I was based in Syracuse, just up the road a piece from his hometown. He checked out www.crankdaddy.com, liked what he heard, and PMd me, saying that my band should play a show with his (Plan 607) sometime.

And that's exactly what happened on Saturday night. In a small but very cool pub located smack dab in the heart of Syracuse's Armory Square (the hot spot in town), Crankdaddy opened up an all punk extravaganza. The bill featured Crankdaddy, a great "porno punk" band called the Pushroads (www.pushrodsrock.com), and Plan 607.

There was a great crowd there (a free show will do that!), and it was a kick a s s show. We opened and hit it hard, with me slingin' my Pinkburst V until the B sting popped. (Thank God for backup guitars!) The Pushrods went on next and rocked the house with heavy, hilarious tunes like "Treat Her Like a Whore" and "Looking 4 Snatch."

Finally, Plan 607 hit the stage. Don't know if you guys hit their website yet, but do it today www.plan607.com. A.D. Greg, and Ant have a great, catchy punk sound that instantly gets your head boppin and your foot tappin. On stage, they're maniacs. A.D. was wailing on his V Select like a madman, all while singing his head off. The bassist Greg and drummer Ant were just as manic on stage, and it all added up to one of the best punk shows I've ever seen. (And yes, I've seen tons.) A.D. kept getting shocked (there was water and beer all over the stage) but he never skipped a beat.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. I think A.D.'s wife took some pics, so maybe he'll chime into this thread and post some. If you ever get to Syracuse or Utica and any of these bands are playing, don't miss the show. Or if you're somewhere in the Northeast and are looking for some great bands to play in your town, give your Dean bruthas a call!

Wanted! Dead or Alive!

Dear Forumers

A few months ago I purchased a pretty nice Dean guitar. I don't know the model name, though - might anyone of you professionals help me? I made a few photographs and put them online, showing body front, body back, full front, and neck front. Which model is it?

Building back up slowly
by Lon on Tue Jun 22, 2004 9:50 pm
Back up to 4 guitars at the moment. The flame strat is on ebay but it doesn't look like the bids will reach my reserve, again. What we have is a Yamaha 302s Tele, Custom built (by me) strat, Lotus strat, and a '97 Fernandes H65 with Sustainer. Got the Lotus on ebay yesterday for $34, and it was right in my hometown so I drove over to the guy's house and picked it up. Was the filthiest guitar I've ever seen, but cleaned up real nice. I have a total of $399 in these guitars, and that includes $45 for the Duncan Hotrail in the flame strat.

Rush 30th Anniversary Tour on Saturday !!!
by Brave Dave on Wed Jun 23, 2004 8:32 am
I first saw Rush in 1974 opening for KISS and this Saturday, nearly 30 years later, I am taking all three of my kids to the 30th anniversary tour. I saw them two years ago and it was a fantastic show. No opening act either, which makes it all that much better. My three kids, "Z", "ML" and "V", have music in their blood just like me and this should be a great time. I 'll post a review late Saturday night.

The Quest !
by justadude on Wed Jun 23, 2004 1:11 pm
As you guys know,I'm new here and just wanted to let you know how I became obsessed with Dean Guitars.I remember being a 11-12 year old kid watching videos on MTV in the very early 80's,you know, when they PLAYED videos. And I saw a Iron Maiden, one of my favorite bands, video with Adrian Smith of Maiden playing this beautiful, but somewhat different looking, guitar.Of course the first thing I noticed was the huge V-headstock,and I was HOOKED!Then I saw a Cars video, again one of my favorite bands, and Elliot Easton was playing the coolest looking axe in the history of the world. It was his Custom ML,the one with the breathtaking Blueburst finish. Here's the thing:I never found out what kinds of guitars these were until I stumbled across a website a couple of years ago and saw a Dean XL in a guys personal collection that he had posted on the net.And I just about s@#t myself. Finally,I had found out who had made these incredible instruments that I had witnessed in my childhood years. Finally, the quest was over and my obsession began.Well, there ya go.That's my story.Sorry about the length of the story, just wanted to tell a little tale...

I knew it was too good to be true!!
by Brave Dave on Thu Jun 24, 2004 8:48 am
Close to four months ago I pulled an ad off of the bulletin board at Guitar Center for a band needing a second guitarist. If you remember the thread, these guys were really, really good and it looked like everything was going to work out great. This would have been the best band I had ever played with and I was really looking forward to getting back to playing live. We rehearsed for a month and at the last minute "they" decided that I wasn't ready for the gig (not true) so I didn't get to play. No big deal, really. A week later I talked to the "leader" and he says we need to get down to working on details and getting the guitar parts down tight. That was two months ago. I bet I called this guy 50 times. He wouldn't answer or call me back. Yesterday I did the old *67 trick and he answered immediately. What a dope! I got this long story of how "busy" he had been. Next I was given a long list of things that I needed to "change". I need to get a guitar with single coils pups, I need to get rid of my Line 6, I need to be ready to sit out if they do a song that only calls for one guitar, I need to play the songs the way I am "instructed"....on and on and on. The bottom line is this guy doesn't want the "competition". I am no BLOODROOT, but I know how to play a guitar. Why do people's egos have to get in the way? Anybody want to start a band?
___Hardtail Select question___
by deanguitars83 on Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:03 am
sorry if you guys have answered many questions about these already, but I'm new to the forum and had a question. What is the difference between the Hardtail and Hardtail Select (which is a couple more hundred dollars). I couldn't find on the site about the pickups on them, so is it the pickups? And I noticed the finishes are much nicer on the selects, but I wouldn't expect the finish to jump the price about 2hundred. And also, do you think the Hardtail Selects have good pickups and overall quality?

Ezra Stone, Volume 1 is finally available for sale! You can purchase it through Amazon.com here for $10.00 (USD) plus shipping and handling (we will ship internationally). We may sell it through PayPal too depending on feedback (the fees are a little high on PayPal to do it without knowing if folks want to use that service).

The CD art should show up on the Amazon.com site within the next 24 hours (there is an approval process). I am also going to have some samples up shortly on our webpage. I am having some issues with FTP right now that sould be fixed by the end of the day.

I recorded all of my parts using the '79V and my Select Vs. I cannot remember which was on which song though!

Pawnshop find (non Dean)
by Lon on Fri Jun 25, 2004 2:52 pm
Last year Fender made a special edition run of 3000 "Splattercasters". They went for $400 and sold quite fast. I was in my local junk pawn shop Wed and saw a little Fender Sidekick 25 Reverb amp for a good price, so I went back yesterday lunchtime with the $$$ to get it. What did I find? A brand new, unplayed Splattercaster, for $199! Now I've seen a lot of these and to be honest, I've never seen one I liked until this one. Many of them look like they've been vomited on. I'm pretty pleased with this one though, the back especially. Thinking about trading another Fender owner for his maple neck though. I've never seen rosewood quite like this though and it's growing on me fast.

Got an issue with the forum...want to make sure it's not some holdover from the virus I had...

When I go to the Index, I get a screen from last night, so I'm unsure whether there are new posts or not because it's still saying that Dave (B&T) was the last poster...and each time I go to the Gen. Forum my private message window comes back saying one more message than previously, but when I check, empty...

Could you check that out and ensure no one else is having this problem...cause it could be a bit of leftovers from that virus my comp had.

String Question
by CliffBurton1986 on Sat Jun 26, 2004 11:22 pm
Hey guys, I was thinking the other day about guitar strings. You know how when basses first came out they had "Flatwound" strings on em?? Then they started making "Roundwounds" later on in (forget what year). Did guitar strings go through that change too??? I've never heard of flatwound guitar strings. Or did basses have flatwounds on em so they would get that "thud" that a string bass has??? Help me out guys... Very Happy

by Mike9 on Sun Jun 27, 2004 8:59 am
What a killer show - Eddie, Sammy, Michael & Alex were all in top form and having a blast playing. The whole setup was excellent from the lighting, mixing, projection etc. The projection was great it's the first real show I've seen using that technology (yeah I don't get out much - LOL) They played about 2-1/2 hours and got hotter the more they played it was excellent I could watch it again tonight no problem. The new material sounds great I might be buying the new album this week.

Eddie played a flame cherryburst Custom Shop Wolfgang w/sustainer and brought his 5150 Strat out for a couple of numbers. The top on that Wolfgang looks like it's been through the mill and the huge I-bolt sticking out of the back was a different look, but it keeps the chord out of his way.

One really nice thing about the big projection screens was the closeup of Eddie's playing technique - it answered some questions I had about how he coaxed sound out of his guitar which is a pretty basic setup. Two humbuckers, single volume, two DPT mini toggles, a three way toggle & a Floyd Rose with a D-Tuna.

Like I said pretty basic, but extremely versatile - man what a great show!!! Very Happy Cool

I subbed on guitar at a local church today. The acoustic guitarist commented on my Blueburst Z, saying he used to have one just like. Of course, the wheels were spinning in my head as to where the guitar might be and if it was obtainable. Further inquiry revealed his guitar was actually a Baby Blueburst Z, which is still pretty cool. He said it had a serial number in the pickup cavity but no number on back of the headstock. I told him there were many documented oddball guitars built back then. I asked why he got rid of it.....his ex-wife set it on fire!
Graspop Metal meeting
by spacebeer on Mon Jun 28, 2004 3:44 am
So it's 8:50 AM now been at work for an hour, was in bed at 4:30 last night I am pretty tired LOL!

he Grapop fest was awesome! we only went one day not the whole weekend because all the band we wanted to see played on sunday.

We arrived at 13:00 and the weather was ultra nice I am still feeling the sun burns! DESTRUCTION was opening on the main stage kickass Schmier played his DEAN bass again proudly as he does with every gig, he really seems to dig it!

They played a solid short set with some classics and newer songs with decent sound, awesome!

Right after we had an hour to look around a bit go to the metal fair buy some CD's and shirts get some beer, they had Belgian MAES pils at the meeting so that was cool, very good beer, those Belges shure know about beer!
Prices were reasonable at € 1.66 for a small beer and € 3.32 for a big pint!

After that Testament took the stage at 15:00 or so AWESOME, Eric petersson was hurt in an accident in Eastern Europe and broke his leg in mulktiple places so they asked Steve Smyth to fill in and he did so...

The cool thing was the new guitarist metal Mike (Ex- Halford) came on stage with a Black DEAN TC V whereas Steve was playing Eric's axes so he came on stage with a TBZ TC V for a twin DEAN V attack!

It was DEAN galore on stage after Destruction also Testament played all DEANs, though on some songs Metal Mike fell back on his jackson RR, he is an awesome player indeed no trouble whatsoever with the Alex Scolnick solo's!

Steve played an awesome black TC Caddy with all 3 white PU's which looked killer!

They played a short set with all classics and some newer songs which I totally dig! paul Bostaph destroyed on drums! I am glad we gave Dave Lombardo back in Slayer so Bostaph can do a kickass job with Testament!

After that Death Angel started uup in the marquee tent stage, they played awesoem, I have seen emtoo much lately so I lost interest pretty quickly shame since they were going down well!

maybe the most energetic band from the festival...the tentwas loaded to the max with who knows 6,000-7,000 people....

Then after DA straight back to the main stage for SAXON who played a killer set, they are almost all in their 50's but they still are one of the most solid NWoBHM survivors to me they totally destroy maiden live..

All the classics were played and Biff Byford showed all of the youngsters how to be a frontman, we got "wheels of steel", "crusader", "denim and leather", "the band played on", "princess of the night", "heavy metal thunder", "20,000 feet" and some newer songs, they really did well amongst all the much younger bands and showed most of em how to play an entertaining gig!

Then we went to the marquee to watch Clidren Of Bodom which are not really my cuppa tea, a high nuber of female attendance and backstreet boys like scenes, but they did OK, I left after 3 songs to get something to eat!

Then we saw a good part of Life Of Afony and Fear Factory....especially the latteris nt my taste, LOA were pretty cool, ultra heavy Sabbath Like riffing clean vocals, really cool band, just like I remember them from the early 90's.

Then a friend of mine wanted to see Dimmu Borgir play...they sucked ass IMO, I don;t like black metal and this gig only confirmed it's not for me...I thought it was all pretty cheezy....though the playing was pretty solid this time (unlike three previous times I saw em) you could actually hear guitars this time!

Then the waiting was for the MIGHTY priest weer we all came for, I think 80% of all almost 35,000 attendees gathered in front of the stage very large crowd!

The stage set was awesome, hydraulic platforms some laser beams, killer light show, the mettalian sign allover the stage, LOL I saw Priest play the same stage in 2001 with Ripper and this show blew it totally away!

They opened with "the hellion/electric eye" and the crowd was very pleased though after a day of metal everybody was exhausted though everybody tried to be as enthousiastic as they could!

One thing is shure Rob still knows how priest songs are sung and gave away a killer show, he even communicated with the crowd quite a bit which we all know is not his strong point.

Of course the high pitched screams were not as powerfull as they used to be, but overall his voice was solid and he sang very very cool! Maybe because of his age he is technically not on par anymore with Ripper but after all his voice IS priest so the band finally worked as an entity on stage again....whereas with Ripper it sounded like a glorified cover band!

The PA sound was crystal clear and the band played KILLER, songs like "beyond the realms of death", "hell bent for leather", "heading out to the highway", "turbo lover", "a touch of evil", "painkiller", "metal gods", "united", "living after midnight", "breaking the law", "diamonds and rust" (acoustic), "the green manalishi", "the ripper", "victim of changes" and all that good stuff!

I can only recommend everybody to go see em, be a little forgiving on the screams.....though this was the last show of the tour so that could also have been a part of it, for me Rob is still the metal god and I am looking forwardx to the new Priest record!

Just wanted to share a little moment from the David Bowie concert I saw last week.

The concert was held in the norwegian festival "Norwegian Wood" and was really good.

The concert started pretty bad after Bowie was hit directly in the eye by a lollipop thrown by one of the spectators... The lollipop was actually stuck between the eyeball and the eyelid and one from Bowies management had to pull it out... Ouch! Bowie was really mad after this incident (completely understandable) but seemed to get over it as the concert progressed and delivered an excellent show.

Now to the point:

Bowie started to play the song "Under pressure" which he wrote together with Freddie Mercury. ("I'll have to do this duet with my female bassplayer since Freddie is currently unavailable..." LOL!).

As the songs easy recognizable bass line started to sound from the speakers, a guy in his early twenties standing in front of me exclaimed: "Cool!!! Bowie is doing a Vanilla Ice cover!!!"

Needless to say, this was followed by much laughter and head shaking from the ones around him who heard it...

Is a Tradition S too big for my 8-year old?

Hey everybody. I am looking for an acoustic for my middle son. He is turning eight, and he wants a guitar now that his big brother got one. Like any good Dad, I want to encourage his interest with a solid, playable instrument. I really like the Tradition, but I am worried that it may be too big for him right now. Any thoughts?

By the way, my ten-year old is having fun learning to play his Cadilac X. I am glad that his younger brother wants the acoustic. Maybe they could even trade or share sometimes.

Wish me luck. Good talking with you all again.

I'm mainly a bassist but everybody needs a guitar around, so I bought a Zen and 79 V this week. (I bought a Gibson Les Paul last week and am just disappointed so I'm taking it back.)

I had nearly forgotten about Dean since my guitar playing days and when I saw the Braziliaburst V on eBay I knew that I had found the guitar to replace the LP.

I don't have any Dean basses but not for lack of digging the instruments. I have too many high-end basses as it is so it's hard to justify buying another - although the Bromberg and the Rhap 8 are high on my list =0)... And a Hollywood Z was the first bass I EVER fell in love with, before I actually started playing bass.

So hi - name's Dave, I'd like to hang out awhile =0)

Little Wargasm news for Hans
by transblueZ on Tue Jun 29, 2004 6:47 pm
WARGASM Announce Reunion Gig

The following message has been posted at the WARGASM website (www.angelfire.com/ma2/officialwargasmpage);

After a ten-year hiatus, Boston's thrash pioneers WARGASM will return to unleash their unique brand of power metal on Saturday, September 18th at the Middle East Club in Cambridge, MA.

Billed as the First Annual Rawkshow, proceeds from the event will benefit the Boston-based non-profit organization, Rawkstars, Inc., which offers music education programs for kids.

"We've been approached several times over the years about doing a reunion show and have discussed celebrating the band's history in a big way at some point", says Wargasm lead guitarist Rich Spillberg , "but never felt the scenario was perfect for us. That is, until now."

"Playing a show for Rawkstars at a venue like The Middle East was just too good to pass up. We'd been waiting for a good enough reason to get together again, and this is definitely it," says Bob Mayo, vocalist and bass player for the group. Mayo, who currently authoring a book about the early days of the now-legendary Boston metal scene, views this as a chance to get together with his old band mates one more time, while supporting an organization with an important mission.

"Music just about saved my life when I was younger; it helped me through some very difficult times," he says. "Who knows what I would have turned to if I didn't have my guitar? Every kid should have a chance to get involved in music. The First Annual Rawkshow isn't just about turning people on to Wargasm ; it's about turning kids onto making music in general. We can maybe affect someone's life and celebrate what music has done for us at the same time. That's amazing."
I could have just cried (LOTS of pics)
by Lon on Tue Jun 29, 2004 8:46 pm
OK here's the pics. The headstock aside, I'd still say it's in about 7.5 to 8 condition. Dirty as hell, though I've seen much worse. I have no doubt it will clean up nicely. Looks as if it hasn't been played in years. Strings were very corroded but not rusty. Fat neck. Neck pup looks to be aftermarket, not sure what kind, but I will say it sounds really good. I made the mistake of plugging this beast in and am now trying desperately to talk myself out of it. I'm losing the battle. I'd have to trade both my Splattercaster and my Yamaha Tele, as well as a little cash to do this. I can live with the headstock thing since thee's really nohing to be done about it anyway. My only concern is that there's a little bit of fretboard damage way up high (where I never play anyway). Take a look at the pics. The serial number is extremely hard to read, but it looks like 78 0068 to me.

Got my "Ezra Stone Vol. 1" yesterday
by Mike9 on Wed Jun 30, 2004 8:40 am
I got my Ezra Stone Volume 1 yesterday and gave it a spin this morning. Well done!! Sound is really good brother Thor's Flying V sounds killer. The vocals are good & the rhythm section is rock solid. I didn't know what to expect other than great guitar. Considering my limited knowlage base of modern Metal to compair/contrast it with - I'm not going to. Suffice to say I was surprised when it ended - I was in the groove - in other words: What's not to like? Cool
ML versus V: style, playability, vibe
by jammadave on Wed Jun 30, 2004 10:16 am
Hey guys - Got a 79 V on the way as I've posted before... But I am torn now between the V and ML styles. I could likely just trade out a V for an ML or whatever later, and no, "both" isn't a viable option right now.

Realizing that within the same series, all the models are identical in specs (or very nearly so), I'm wondering how they compare in other ways.

1. Playability - comfortabillity of them both sitting or standing? Note that I like the classical-style playing stance of having my right knee in the crotch of a V-style guitar, over the traditional stance.

2. The V gives me more a vintage vibe, visually, but does an ML simply look ridiculous playing, say, jazz/fusion, classic or psychedelic rock? I mean you've got greats in many styles playing flying V guitars, but the only ML presence I notice is in metal, which isn't my cuppa tea these days.

3. Much to my surprise, when I asked my girlfriend which she liked better (after ordering the V already but becoming completely undecided as to which I liked better myself) she declared the V "very hair-metal" and said the ML looked better to her. It surprised me because I thought sure she'd think the ML more "metal". This made me feel better about liking the ML so much myself (it has always been a guilty pleasure in the back of my mind)

Side note: woohoo! just got my DOA number!
