Sad news in the motorcycle community.....
by DIMEBAG JOE on Wed Sep 01, 2004 10:28 pm
Its with a heavy heart that I write this. Any of you who follow the world of custom motorcycles might know who Indian Larry is. He has been on numerous Biker Build offs on Discovery Channel along with an appearance on Monster Garage and was based out of New York.

Indian Larry was killed in Charlotte, North Carolina when he fell from his bike during a stunt. From what I understand he passed in the hospital from massive head injuries, and no he wasn't wearing a helmet.

Wear your helmets guys.

RIP Indian Larry.

Just got off work, was in my room changing...heard commotion, went outside and there's the body of a mamushi pit viper writhing headless outside my door...apparently the guys upstairs had tossed it off the balcony after cutting its head off on the second floor (where it was spotted)...they have the head on the picnic table...was about 3 to 3.5 feet long (about 1 meter for you non-American types).

How often should I polish my frets?
by NickM on Fri Sep 03, 2004 3:48 pm
Hey all

Well I broke another string because of the tail piece on my guitar (I filed out the burrs but it didn't help), and the Dean Customer Service told me to talk to my local Dean dealer which is on the other side of the city NEXT to my city, so I'm screwed. Anyway, I have the strings off now and I was wondering if I should polish my frets. Is it possible to polish them too often? How often should I polish my frets?

thanks!

Just a little info on the personal side...

Finally the pieces seem to fall back into place.

After 4 months of unemployment, I finally managed to get a job again. The process has been long and tiresome, but it seems to be worth the effort.

I've applied for lots of different jobs, and the one with the smallest number of applicants gave me 70 competitors....

From now on, I'll be working as an engineer in a fire protection consultant company. My current contract is only valid out this year, but chances are that I'll be working there next year as well if my qualifications are accepted. This means HARD WORK until Christmas, but I'm really keen on proving myself at this point.

For all that haven't experienced it; unemployment suck$!! Big time!!

Well, back to the books. I've got a lot to catch up with!

I have made a change in my life that I am hoping works well for me. As I have been back into studing the guitar seriously after a lengthy hiatus I have discovered just how much it means to me. I have since sold my website and domains and bought ome more recording equiptment and have decided to put all of my spare time and energy into my music. Has anyone else laid the axe down for a longish time and gotten back into it? Did you find a greater passion for it when you picked it back up?

My son's friends dad that's had an old amp in his garage that he wanted to sell me for $200. I had my son check it out yesterday and he said it's an old dusty Vox about 4 feet tall with a slanted head and one big cab. Not knowing a thing about Vox I do a little surfing and figure it's at least worth looking at eventually. Well, the kid's mom calles us last night out of the blue asking if she can borrow $300 to get her kid out of the county lockup. He was in a car full of kids that got pulled over and some joints were found. Anyway, I don't have $300 to loan them, and really don't know them anyway but I think hey, there's a Vox amp in their garage that's probably worth a little. So off I go this morning to have a look and what do I find? A mid 60s Royal Guardsman in perfect working order, but dusty as heck. I brought a guitar just to try it out, plus I never played a vintage Vox before. Let me just say saaaweeeeeeeet. Hadn't been plugged in in 20 years and still sounded awesome. So I search the net and find one for sale for $1400 at chrisguitars.com. Of course they need the money NOW so I pack it up and take it to the Indy GC and get them $625. I figure I've got some serious good karma coming my way for this. But of course it was the right thing to do, so that's payment enough. It's good to help people.

While walking down the street one day, a US Senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the man.

"Well, I'd like to but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose were to spend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the senator.

"I'm sorry but we have our rules."

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a club and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress.

They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that, before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises.

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

"Now it's time to visit heaven."

So, 24 hours pass with the legislator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity."

The senator reflects for a minute, then the senator answers: "Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell."

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder.

"I don't understand," stammers the senator. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and club, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now all there is a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?"

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, "Yesterday we were campaigning...

OK... I appreciate the Gibson LP/PRS Singlecut lawsuit... But I absolutely can't understand the ramp-up in price on these bad boys. I just saw a 2000 Singlecut (non-ten top) going for $4,500!!! Come on... get real!

They are truly wonderful guitars and now collectable I might add (but then again there sure are a lot of them in circulation!) but to justify a price of $4K +++ is just ridiculous!

What are your thoughts...

An interesting excerpt that I posted on another thread but I figured it was thought provoking enough that it deserves a thread of it's own.

Stratmania: The Aftermath

The events that took place in the vintage and collectible guitar market between 1986 and 1987 will not likely be duplicated. This period, known as Stratmania, was characterized by a frenzied period of escalating prices, most notably for the Stratocaster, but for other "blue chip" collectibles such as pre-War Martins and late ‘50s Les Paul Standards. The catalyst for the meteoric rise in prices was the increased presence of foreign buyers and American buyers who felt pressured to "buy now before they’re all gone." Dealers were able to raise prices since the buyers were willing to pay for the right guitar.

Some people may argue that the escalation in prices that occurred in the 1990s were a direct result of Stratmania. Since I wasn’t paying much attention to vintage and collectible guitars prior to 1990, I thought I’d do a little research to answer the question: Did Stratmania influence the prices of non-Blue Chip guitars? To test this hypothesis I chose the 1965 Fender Jaguar and the 1966 Gibson ES-335 as subjects since they are abundant and do not necessarily belong to the "golden age" associated with their marques or models. I compiled prices for these guitars from dealer stock lists and advertisements graciously supplied by two true packrats, James Werner and James Strahm.

The results are presented in the two graphs and show that the prices for these guitars did not increase immediately following Stratmania. The price of the ES-335 increased the usual 10% or so per year until 1996 when it increased by 25%. My guess is that Eric Clapton’s recent use of a mid-1960s ES-335 for his album and video had something to do with it (Eric, if you’re reading this, please use an mid-1980s G&L Cavalier for your next video. Thanks.)

Likewise, the Jaguar’s price did not appear to be affected much by Stratmania. Yet the Jag’s price rose by over $500 between 1990 and 1995 and has stabilized around the $1150 mark. This increase may have been due the "grunge factor," i.e. - Jaguars were being used by many alternative rock bands (now known as modern rock bands) and grunge bands.

So, based on these two examples, Stratmania at best, may have had a minor influence on the prices of non-Blue Chip vintage and collectible guitars. What Stratmania did have major influence on was the awareness of vintage and collectible guitars in general and the number of people collecting guitars increased as a result. Since so many people are collecting guitars, let’s look at the four major phases that a collector (any collector – shells, coins, stamps, etc) is likely to go through. My knowledge is based upon my own collecting experience as well as the experience of collectors with small to moderate size collections, i.e. ordinary people with 10 to 75 instruments. I didn’t include the "super collectors" here as their experiences are in an entirely different class.

The Four Phases of Guitar Collecting

Phase 1 – The collecting bug bites. Most of the people I have spoken to that have small to moderate collections basically started out as players, not collectors. Their acquisitions were simply tools in their musical arsenal, but at some point there was a trigger which resulted in further acquisitions being deliberate and planned around a theme. The theme could be as broad as "electric solid bodies" to a slightly more focused "pre-1970 Gibson electric solid bodies" to the very specific "Gibson Les Paul Jrs." All but one of the collectors polled started with broad based collections when they began their journey into this hobby.

As an aside, collecting hobbies in general, most notably coins, stamps and shells, are gentrifying and very few young people have an interest in collecting these items. If you watch antique and collectible shows on television, you’ll notice that most of the people are middle aged and older, partly because they have the financial means to collect things, but partly because there aren’t as many young people interested in collecting anymore. However, I think guitar collecting may have some immunity to this trend as long as rock and country music remain guitar based. Rock and country is, and will be, the music of the Baby Boomers to the present generation. Most importantly it is the music of youth and that’s where the crucial link is.

Phase 2 – Focus and acquisition. As additional acquisitions are made, most collectors begin to focus the theme of their collection. Of the collectors that I polled, over half of them focused their collecting efforts within 3 years of being bitten by the collecting bug. Some focused by one or more brands, some by one or more models of a given brand. Of the collectors polled, those that have been collecting for less than 10 years said that financial resources play an important role in the decision making process for focusing their collection. For instance, it is a very expensive proposition to collect pre-CBS Fenders at this time in terms of money and in terms of the quality of the instruments for sale (yes, nearly all the collector grade FEI guitars are gone). However, it is not as expensive to collect just pre-CBS Musicmasters or recent reissues of pre-CBS guitars.

Once focused, most collectors then pursue certain pieces that fit the criteria of their collection. This is the part of collecting that all the collectors agreed was the most fun and challenging, namely; the hunt for another guitar to add to the collection. The thrill of the hunt must be an addictive, endorphin-producing activity because some of the collectors used terminology such as "guitar junkie" and "getting a fix" when referring to searching for and acquiring guitars. During this phase collectors often refer to the guitars that they don’t have rather than the ones that they do have, even if their collection is rather nice, extensive, and/or complete. I suppose it’s part of the "check list" mentality that we pick up from baseball card collectors, i.e. "got it, got it, need it, got it, etc."

Phase 3 – Fine Tuning and slowdown. At some point, collectors have either acquired most or all of the pieces they desired, lack room for additional guitars, lack funding to continue acquisitions at the pace they did in Phase 2, or all of the above. As such, the growth of the collection in Phase 3 is slow. Instead of making new acquisitions, many collectors will fine tune their collection during this period by trading or selling a guitar in order to replace it with an example that is in better condition, from a different year, or perhaps has particular features that are preferred by the collector.

During Phase 3, some collectors look for items associated with the guitars within their collection, such as hang tags, catalogs, accessories, ad slicks, and promotional materials. In addition, it is not uncommon for a collector to acquire (and even begin to collect) amplifiers associated with their guitars either by brand name or by time period or by association with a particular artist.

This fine tuning keeps the thrill of hunt alive for collector which also keeps the interest level high as well. In addition, this is phase where many collectors begin to amass more information by researching about their guitars and sharing information with other collectors through dialog. This again enhances interest and, quite frankly, provides new information not previously published. This information can be disseminated in magazines such as 20th Century Guitar, books, and in discussion groups, such as the Telecaster Discussion Page and the G&L Discussion Page, on the Internet.

Many of the collectors polled who have been collecting prior to the mid-1980s stated that they have long been priced out of the market for the guitars that they collect and new acquisitions are few and far between. However, their enthusiasm comes not from the hunt but from the acquisition and sharing of information. This "networking" provides opportunities to meet other collectors which sometimes leads to trading of guitars.

Phase 4 – The big sell off. Eventually, a collector will reach the point where all the guitars desired or that can be afforded have been collected. At this time, interest in the hobby may or may not wane, i.e. the "Been there, done that" syndrome. At some point in this phase, it is not unusual for a collector to sell off all but the most prized or favored guitars especially if the collector is reaching retirement age or has already retired. In some cases, the collection is willed to the immediate family so the collector simply hangs on to it until he or she croaks…. or some evil family member tries to poison the collector so he can cash in on the collection early… but I digress.

If Phase 4 is reached early in the collector’s life, he or she may choose to sell some guitars in order to begin collecting something different, thus starting the cycle again from Phase 2 onward. But no matter how quickly or how long it takes to go through the four phases of collecting, the bottom line is that the journey is fun.

Something You Really Don't Want to Happen...

Wed Sep 8, 7:55 AM ET Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo!

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - A Dutch driver was covered in hundreds of liters of manure when a tank burst on a lorry carrying fertilizer, police said on Tuesday.

"It was a nice night ... so he probably opened his window when he stopped at a traffic light, and then -- (it) happened," said Dana Kragten, spokeswoman for police in rural Drenthe province. "The tank had a small window which burst, probably due to pressure ... The man said he had no time to back away his car or close his window."

Police said the man, whose car was sprayed with an estimated 1,700 liters (370 gallons) of liquid manure, escaped injury though his car had to be towed away.

Wasn't too hard to do, but since it's my first PCB experience I waited till I was in a calm state of mind . . . Oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmm Cool Laughing

So Guitar Center calls me.....
by Lon on Mon Sep 13, 2004 5:29 pm
The Indy GC manager knows I'm "that Dean guy". I tried real hard to sell that '78 Z for them but they ended up getting a sucker to pay the $899. Anyway, they just call and tell me they have a BB Z with white body binding, SN 418835 in white lettering. Setneck. Matching headstock. No "made in" anywhere. Is this a USA Tropical? They're asking $449. Told them I'd be down tonight to look at it. Whattaya think?
Someone was asking about these once.
by deanmaniac on Mon Sep 13, 2004 9:15 pm
Jay Turser Guitars. Someone, I forget who, was trying to get info on these made in China guitars and nobody had any answers. Well, my nephew wants a tele to match the old fender I just repainted, and I saw one of these on ebay for Cheep$$. So I banged it for a buy-it-now. It's here, and I gotta say, it's a cool little guitar. Nice frets, good pickups(nail the authentic tele sound), pearloid p/guard, gold hardware, decent tuners(Gotoh?/Ping?) nice wood grain through the three tone sunburst finish that shines for miles. Even has decent pots/switches. This is a JT/LT Deluxe. Well worth the $ for a first guitar. I just spent an hour wrangling the sucka, and I'm still smiling. Wink Laughing I honestly think it's better than the made in mexico fenders. Sounds cool through my VFX5212, Carvin SX200 and Zoom 3030. Then I had to spoil all the fun by plugging in my '63 Strat! Cool Laughing Laughing Ah yes, there's the fuel for my soul! Ain't nuthin better... Not in this world. Very Happy

Drove 800 or so miles to South Carolina to my Aunts home. Seeing how my home was in the direct path of the storm it was time to get the hell outta here. I packed up my GTA, threw what guitars would fit in it and my dog and left. 10 days later Im home. Lost alot of pay cause of this thing, my yard is a mess, fence got tore up, new vinyl siding got ripped off. Spent all day cleaning up the house and Im still not done. My town looks like a war zone. Man that sucked. Stay away Ivan.
Dean EVO SS & ZX in the new Music123 Catalogue?
by Mike9 on Tue Sep 14, 2004 1:27 pm
I was flipping through the new Music 123 catalogue and there they were - EVO Special Select and a ZX. Funny thing is that there is no "Dean" heading they just slipped them in there. I wonder if Deans are inching their way toward the box stores? I've seen Dean accoutics and resonator guitars in MF catalogues before, but this is the first electrics I've seen.

Thoughts on Exercise
by Rex Herring on Tue Sep 14, 2004 10:22 pm
Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5000 per month

My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. Now she's 97 years old and we don't know where the hell she is.

The only reason I would take up exercising is so that I could Hear heavy breathing again.

I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.

I have to exercise early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.

If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.

And last but not least: Some people can't exercise because it makes the ice jump right out of their glass!

You could run this over to your friends or just e-mail it to them!
Accidental String change
by Docter M on Wed Sep 15, 2004 12:20 am
this is one makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside.

so i got out of class early cause i have an off-campus and i headed over to Bizarre Guitar. I lent out my A string cause a friend broke his and it was about time for me to change strings anyway. so i know i like the feel of really thick strings, so i buy a set of Ernie Ball 12's. i get home, put them on the Fatstrat, and get to tuning it. well the thing was hell to tune and i had no idea why til i looked at the trem. the bloody thing was as far as it would go.

i bought some Not Even Slikies, and upon close inspection of the package, i see the "reccomended for downtuning" label. so i bought baritone strings. i guess its not entirely bad. i've been wondering how B tuning would be for quite some time, so i get to test it out now.
Back in the fold (pics)
by Lon on Wed Sep 15, 2004 7:51 am
Well I did it. I posted in the new Deans forum that my new local Dean dealer got his first shipment last Friday and I went by to check them out. He had an EVO Tevo (what the hell does that mean anyway?) and it was love at first sight. Picked it up last night. I was his first Dean customer. My first ever Dean was an EVO 60 and I've been a fan ever since. What really struck me was the bare mahogany on the back of the neck. Also, mine is VERY dark compared to the ones I see in photos, almost a burgundy under the right lights. The only changes I see right away are a new nut and probably some chrome pickup rings and silver knobs. The pups are fine for me for now. I also acquired a Fender M-80 half stack yesterday. Cool What a great combo right out of the gate. Always loved the Fender amp sound, and now I have it in 4x12! Got it at a pawn shop for $189. Yeah that's a steal for sure, this thing really pushes a lot of air. Pics below. Did I say this thing is DARK? Love it. The pic of the tailpiece is AFTER 15 minutes of rubbing and cleaning. Gunk just won't come off, gonna need a new one. Other than that one small thing, I'm thrilled with the guitar. Got it for $275 out the door with a hard case. Gotta support the little guys (if you can find a good Mom and Pop shop these days).

Online Lessons. Done right this time.
by mpire on Thu Sep 16, 2004 9:22 pm
Been looking on the net for good resources for a while (like most)..

Previously I've had a somewhat less-than-inspiring go around with musiciansuniversity.com,
and while I enjoyed Marc Seal's video stuff, the player download thingy didn't work for me at all...
Yeah I like the guitarport, but that's a monthly sub whether you use online content or not and then they started charging extra for premium berklee lessons.. meh.

Picked up a book (a real one, with pages an everything..) yesterday. "How to play blues guitar, the basics and beyond" published by Guitar player Musician's Library. (seems like a well connected collection of articles from Guitar Player magazine). One thing that drove me to this tome was a coupon to http://www.truefire.com right then I downloaded 56Mb of mp3's containing all of the examples & commentary ("for lead work, I dug up 2 special guitars, an old Dean Flying V, and a fender custom shop SRV strat"), after plugging in the code, you get 48 hours to download the files (one note: it wasn't too great with naming the files when you choose to download, in fact it didn't name anything past the first space in the filename and no extension, so minimally append .mp3 to audio downloads).
There's also a decent amount of free content available, with pdf copies of magazine articles complete with mp3 and powertab companion files.

But wait!

For buying the book and signing up ($16.95) I got an email confirmation with an extra $10 credit for premium content.

I also bought Phil Hellmuth's "Play Poker Like the Pro's". Figure if I'm going to play the blues I should at least give myself a reason Wink

Hey guy's not sure how to up load it here. If you go to Dinosaur Rock Guitar.com go to there forum area. Go to guitar heroes it there. by BULL on Wed Sep 22, 2004 10:24 pm
Since I found out about (hopefully it happens) deal with dean and SCHENKER. I been listening to his work more than usual. As I type this I am listening to UFO FORCE IT. I'm 26 years old I wish I would have seen him in the 70's with UFO. I did in fact see him last year in Cleveland Ohio at Peabody's. I was going to go see him with Uli Jon Roth at the same place, but I didn't because of work. Hopefully Michael and Uli make it back around. Heck if they where to do some kinda package with the Scorpions that'd be rad. I have just about everything Schenker has done. I can't wait for his new dvd coming out soon. Now hopefully he signs the deal with DEAN.

New Dean Vendetta Finally Arrived!
by BMan on Thu Sep 23, 2004 10:30 am
Well after 5 weeks of waiting my local music store received my new Vendetta 1.0 in Natural Finish. My initial impressions are very good. The guitar looks fantastic and pics will follow after the weekend. Not exactly sure yet but I think the setup from the factory is pretty close. Have a lesson tonight and will get the instructors evaluation to final things out. Overall I think this is one of the best looking guitars I would be able to afford in the near future and am looking forward to many long practice hours with it.

Coolest guitar shape
by Lon on Thu Sep 23, 2004 11:55 am
What, in your opinion, is the "coolest" guitar shape? Not necessarily the most playable or even practical, just really cool to look at. The kind that when you see one on a stand at the local roadhouse you say "hey, cool guitar". For me, it's gotta be the Flying V. Not really practical for those that play sitting a lot (like me), but I just find the shape interesting. I even owned one, and find myself wanting another. I see a cheapo VX in my future that's gonna be painted pearl white. So, what's yours?

Crotch Rocket vs Cruiser
by DizzyDean on Thu Sep 23, 2004 1:05 pm
As you all know, Mrs. Diz traded in her 800 Intruder on and new FJR1300. Now, although not a true crotch rocket - certainly in that style of bike. Having rode it a few time now, and the novelty of the newness wearing off, I'm finding that I much prefer the comfort of my Intruder to the FJR. I just find the riding position more comfortable and find myself a lot more relaxed on the bike. The FJR demands a lot more respect and attention. I was going to get one in the spring, now I'm thinking it will be a new cruiser instead.

So, what's your prefered ride.....cruiser or Rocket???? and why????

Anybody familiar with a Tascam 788 Digital Portastudio?

Anybody have any experience to share on this or similar units?

i'm thinking of getting a mini-multitracker..

it's a toss up between the Tascam Portastudio 5 and the Fostex MR-8..

i'm leaning toward the Fostex.. the XLRs and the 8 tracks and 2 track recording is cool.. SPDIF is pretty cool too..

but the Tascam is like a mini-jam recorder with the midi tracks.. and it makes .MP3s on the unit..

anyone have an opinion on them??

i want something to carry around to practice and record.. digitally..
and something that i can use in conjunction with a peecee/mac..

Someone here had a pic of one a few days ago that we were all drooling over. Here's one on ebay for a decent price (so far). Forgot to mention, this seller is the guy that bought my Carvin ML shaped guitar, which he's also selling. I was really torn between getting it back and buying the Tevo I eventually went with. Really really wish I could have afforded both. And that was before this Explorer. This guy is killing me! Good guy though.

this one almost gave me an stroke... hahaha..

Thuya Burl.. i thought the back was kinda "unfinished" looking.. they should have atleast "vintage" tinted the back, instead of a stark white maple..

but think of a Dean Hardtail in that.. or better yet..

a *true* Caddy.. all the appointments of a Vintage Caddy, with that top on it.. so, nice.. so nice..

there should be more exotic wood Deans..

Floyds - Little help...
by Grumpy Goat on Sun Sep 26, 2004 12:54 am
I recently purchased a USA BC Warlock with a Floyd. No problems...only I'm starting to enjoy having a Floyd around the flock. So here's my question.

Has anyone tried a speedloader Floyd yet? I'm aware that they need special strings and all, but all the reviews I've read people are speaking very highly of them. I wouldn't mind finding a 79 MLF and putting a speedloader on it for something fun. So anyone tried one?

Not sure if anyone mentioned it or not but......
The November issue has a feature interview with Kerry Livgren. There is a current shot of him with a Quilty Green Hardtail and another older shot with a Black Caddy that says it is #001 Caddy. 8 pages after the shot of Kerry with the Hardtail is a full page add with Master Dean lauding the innovation in the Dean line of late. Button, button who's got the button (or pickups)
by Mike9 on Sun Sep 26, 2004 5:32 pm
Well it was a pickup swapping marathon between four of my guitars. I took the JB/'59 combo out of my DOA Caddy and put them in my Shimamura LP. I reclaimed my set of Pearly Gates from two other axes and put them in my EVO Deluxe and put the set of Duncan Distortions (also reclaimed from two other guitars) in my DOA Caddy. All of these are covered pups BTW. That left my EVO SS empty so I put the original covered pups from my DOA Caddy in that. Now I have to rewire it because the Page mod won't work with those stock Dean pickups. Oh well who needs 21 different tones anyway Laughing

Now to the meat & potatoes of it - The Shim loves the JB/'59 combo and the Pearly Gates seem taylor made for the EVO Deluxe - it has got some wicked tone to it. The Duncan SH-6 Distortions are right at home in the DOA Caddy and really wake that mahogany body up!!! All in all a very satisfying afternoon Cool I'll probably throw some good pots in the Caddy one of these days, but these are working pretty good now after a shot of cleaner. The wiring on the EVO Deluxe was another story - I needed to resolder about half of it to get it to run right, but it's a balls to the wall player now. Twisted Evil

I've been locking all my bridges and tailpieces for a few months now and I can honestly tell you it makes a very noticable "IMPROVEMENT IN TONE!!!! The strings resonate through the body more and the sustain is improved not to mention intonation and tuning. I'd recommend it to anyone with some skills and patience. Maybe I'll do a "How To" with pics next month after things quiet down at work. Very Happy

So last week, when I posted a note concerning my newest acquisition (a Dean EVO SS) from Musicians Heaven some of you posted info that MH deals with blems. I wrote Brian at MH, and he assured me this was a new guitar being drop shipped directly from Dean. Well the guitar came in on Friday. Holy crap! There were finish flaws ALL OVER the guitar. The worst being on the headstock. Not only that, but the bridge humbucker was cutting out due to a bad selector switch. Anyway, I called Brian at MH and he was really cool about it. he said "no problem", he would issue a call tag and Dean would send another guitar out.

Now I will say that the EVO played very, very nicely. I have never owned a guitar that intonated so perfectly. It was dead on, all of the way up the neck (no more than 3 cents off anywhere). Because of that I started thinking that maybe I should keep it, and just request some type of blem discount. I typically knock the hell out of my guitars when gigging anyway, and a guitar that intonates so perfectly is worth far more to me than a shiney new one (that'll ultimately get nicked up) anyway. So my question is how much of a discount should I be asking for? I paid $399 for it. Anyone out there know?

Good evening everyone,
I was cruising around on Ebay and found a Steinberger body (see pics) I used to want one of these back in the 80's they were too expensive for me then and still seem pretty pricy to me now. What I'm kind of wanting to feel out here, is what you guys that know about guitar parts and the putting together proccess think? How hard is it going to be to find a neck, and other parts, and an approximate cost. The body is starting at like a buck has one bid, 4 days left, gives me a bit of time to think about it. Thanks in advance and hell I'll thank you again when I hear from ya. Wink

It's a 99 US G&L ASAT Deluxe with a Bigsby. Has two Seymour Duncan Pickups with coil taps. The body is semi-hollow with an "F" hole and has a maple top with a Mahogany body. The neck is birds eye maple with an ebony Fretboard.

V shaped necks
by Lon on Wed Sep 29, 2004 12:02 pm
I can't play them! Hurts my hand too much. I like lots of rhythm stuff as you all know, and play lots of barre chords. The ridge on the V just gets uncomfortable after a short while. Really killed me to sell the Fender neck I got from Dana a while back. After getting it back from a polish/crown/aged tuner job I was really psyched. I had never seen or played a neck that had more "mojo", but end the end it had to go because of the V. I see that lots of the high end Deans have the V necks, so that's another excuse for me to not buy one. Razz

NEW YORK (AP) — Disc jockey Scott Muni, the gravelly-voiced radio host whose encyclopedic knowledge of rock 'n' roll made him "The Professor" to three generations of New York listeners, has died at 74.

Muni, who spent nearly 50 years on air in the nation's No. 1 radio market, died Tuesday. he had suffered a stroke earlier this year. But the cause of his death was not immediately known, said Josefa Paganuzzi, spokeswoman for Clear Channel New York.

Muni's last gig was an hour-long afternoon show on New York classic rock station Q104.3, where he landed in 1998. He also hosted many nationally syndicated programs during his career, including "Scott Muni's World of Rock" and the Beatles-oriented "Ticket to Ride."

He was included in an exhibit on radio personalities at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Muni's voice was instantly recognizable, a low rumble announcing the latest tunes from the Beatles to Bruce Springsteen to Pearl Jam.

As the program director at WNEW-FM, he was one of the leading acolytes of the freeform radio movement and became a major influence on the next wave of DJs.

Known to his listeners as "The Professor" or "Scottso," Muni was renowned for his interviews with artists such as Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Pete Townsend and Springsteen.

In one of his more memorable encounters, Muni was speaking with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page when the musician suddenly collapsed to the floor in mid-sentence, wiped out by days of partying. The unflappable Muni simply put on a record, woke Page up, and conducted the rest of the interview with the guitarist lying on the studio floor.

Muni was a die-hard fan of Bob Dylan and the Beatles; after the 1980 murder of John Lennon, the DJ began opening his shows with a Beatles song.

"I did it all," Muni once said when asked about the one thing he wanted to do before dying. "Some I did more than once."

Muni was born in Wichita, Kan., and raised in New Orleans. His broadcasting career started in the Marines. He could be heard on Radio Guam reading "Dear John" letters sent to his fellow servicemen.

Back in the United States, he replaced Alan Freed in Akron, Ohio, before arriving in New York City in the late '50s as one of WMCA-AM's "Good Guys," serving up Top 40 fare. He switched to rival WABC-AM in 1960, and was there during the height of Beatlemania.

But it was when he switched over to the new world of FM that Muni found his perfect place on the radio dial. He arrived at WNEW in 1967, helping create one of the nation's first and longest-lasting alternative stations.

In addition to his radio work, Muni asked, "How do you spell relief?" in a Rolaids commercial. He also did promotional announcements for ABC's "Monday Night Football."

There was no immediate word on a memorial service, but Clear Channel-owned Q104.3 planned a weekend-long tribute to Muni featuring the music of the Beatles. He is survived by his second wife and five children.
TONI IOMMI/GLENN HUGHES "1996 DEP SESSIONS"
by BULL on Wed Sep 29, 2004 7:43 pm
I have the leg of this called "THE 8TH STAR". It's pretty awesome piece of work. It's been bootlegged since 96' apparently someone stole it out of the studio. Now they finally released it this tuesday and they call it "THE 1996 DEP SESSION. After the studio of where it was recorded. Toni riffs are just awesome, Glenn's singing and bass playing is still top notch. A major difference from the bootleg and this release is that they ommitted the puke (former JUDAS PREIST DRUMMER WHOSE BEHIND BARS NOW THANK GOD) Dave Holland in favor of Jimmy Copley who does a great job. Keys are handled by long time SAB keyboardist Geoff Nicholls as well as Don Airey and Mike Exeter. I like this album a little bit better than the 1986 album Hughes and Iommi did called THE 7TH STAR. Due yourselfs a favor if your tired of this cookie cutter crappie vocals(and I know i have been for a long time). You want to hear one of the one of the best vocalist, lyrist and everyone knows how great of a guitarist a Toni Iommi is.

New nut for Tevo

First let me say that even with the cheapo plastic nut and the gunk on the tailpiece, I'm happier with my Tevo than with any of the 60 guitars I've owned. That's a fact. Now, I do want to replace the nut with a good quality one. I'm not sure whether I want bone or graphite though. I know lots of us here do our own tech work so I'm looking for advice, mainly about the sound. I can do the work myself. Discuss.

Hey all,

I finally have a band and we jammed today, and I need to get my solos to stick out. I'm thinking of getting a CHEAP (I don't have much money right now) EQ pedal with the mids and the highs boosted to get a lead boost, does this work? If it does, where can I get a cheap EQ pedal? I have a gig in December.
