I have a question that maybe some of you will have an answer to. Have you ever played a graphite neck? What are your thoughts around feel and tone? What was the fingerboard made of? I have an idea but don't want to spend a bunch of $$ to find out it sucks.

Important parenting advice.... ask Der Kaiser!
by Faust on Tue Mar 01, 2005 4:58 pm
Dear Kaiser:

My 7 year old boy is driving me crazy! He will not listen sometimes and just goes berserk! Sometimes I just want to knock his block off.... what do I do?

Frustrated in Seattle.

Dear Frustrated.... I feel your pain.

Much has been said about "tough love" for misbehaving children. Most of America's populace thinks it very improper to spank children, so a friend of mine has tried other methods to control her kids when they have one of "those moments".

One that she found very effective is to just take the child for a car ride and talk.

They usually calm down and stop misbehaving after the little car ride together.

I've included the photo below of one of the sessions, with her son, in case you would like to use the technique. Its very effective!

Best of luck!

My wife and I just recently (last 2 months) purchased 3 guitars! I have the same comment about each of them.

All came out of the box fresh from the factory ---- and not one single piece of paper to been seen. No "Welcome to the Dean Guitar Family" - no "warranty info" no NOTHING... Not even web site. I mean NOTHING. I would expect SOMETHING!! How about the care and feeding of my new instrument? .. how about the care of the finish .. use steel wool every month?

Well, you get my drift. Maybe I'm the only person that thinks something is missing. Even a package of strings has SOME info on it!

(oh, I lost my Alvarez to my wife - sooo I needed a guitar and picked up the Washburn electric solid body)...

Would welcome thoughts...

Where's the Tropical love?
by T Bone on Tue Mar 01, 2005 6:44 pm
Hey folks,
I was just wondering why (on average) the Tropical models are downed so often. I have a Tropical ML that's an awesome player and sounds awesome too. (after a nice pickup change that is Laughing ) I would definitely buy another one if/when I run across it. Just curious as to why they're not generally popular.

when that ad came out that said dime does dean, was that an ad for tropical made deans? That is around the time I bought my dean. I wanted a dean so bad because of the DFH. I thought I was buying a true dean guitar, turns out it is a tropical. Is there anyway to find out about my guitar by the serial# It is a dimebag lightning model. Is there any info about dimes endorsement with tropical? I want to know because I don't know how many were made. Kinda ticks me off though cuz I thought I was getting a dime approved dean. Sucks for me.

Yahoo radio - JAG PANZER!
by DeanV on Wed Mar 02, 2005 9:32 pm
So I listen to the metal channel on Yahoo radio all day at work. They play some excellent tunes. Pantera, Damageplan, Anthrax, Slayer, etc... and newer bands and new new songs from old faves like the new Priest tune. I really enjoy it because I get to hear a lot of different stuff.

One of my favorite bands.... Jag Panzer. They've played 2 songs every day for the last couple months. The Voyager and another which I like better but can't remember the name of! Excellent riffing going on there! I really like these guys.

How cool we happen to have a member of this band as a Dean brother!

Advice on a Dean purchase

First I'm a newb to Deans but every one here as been very cool..thanks

I have found a an 82 ML Sunburst no binding not a baby model I am waiting on pics but described as a 8 out of 10. I am not a total knuckle head when comes to buying guitars but pricing deans seems a bit tricky.
So the advice I need is with the serial number checking and if the pics verify and they do have a 48 hour return policy is 1250 US to much for this guitar?

Was purpleburst ever a stock color?
by Jag Panzer on Thu Mar 03, 2005 7:01 pm
Was purpleburst (like DizzyDeans) ever a stock color?

My local dealer (at the time) High Country Music had a purpleburst V back in '84 or '85.

I saved for months, but they ended up selling it 3 days before I had all the money. I know.... I should have put it on layaway.

I always wondered if that guitar was a special order or if that was a stock color back then.

by Lon on Fri Mar 04, 2005 7:40 pm
Yup. Picked up this beauty at GC for a stupid low price. Has a custom solid (I think) flame maple body, Schaller tuners, and the best part, SD Antiquity pups. The pups alone cost more than I paid for the guitar. No idea what the body cost, but I'm sure it wasn't cheap. It has an Austin neck, but that's cool with me as I like Austin guitars and this one has a nice fret job. It's going to get hand rolled edges this weekend as well. The Antiquities are awesome! I'd heard of them, but never heard them. The bridge breaks up really nicely and gets downright nasty, while the neck has a good wide range of clean tones. I'm happy!

Guitarist reviews USA Z and Hardtail
by BadClams on Sat Mar 05, 2005 11:05 pm
My favourite (Odd spelling cuz it's an English mag, get it???) guitar mag has reviewed the USA Z and Hardtail in their March issue. They rated both 4.5 of 5 stars and really like both. Here's a couple quotes:

"....the Z Quilt and Hardtail are superb instruments that rate alongside anything made today."

"The Z...oozes class, brims with great tone and plays like a dream."

about the Hardtail: "You feel you can literally do anything on a neck this good."

"...the Z Quilt and Hardtail are as good as it gets...."

they gave the Hardtail a "Guitarist Choice" award.

Great review(s) from a great magazine. Yeah Dean!!!
What are guitars made of?
by Veraxitas Sales on Sun Mar 06, 2005 2:38 am
OK, I know they are made of wood, metal, etc... The reason for my thread is that I am a little confused about the "Types" of wood and how different types of wood affect the cost and also the "Sound" of the guitar.

I am mainly confused about Les Paul models when I see terams such as "Flame Top" "Matched Top" etc...

This was all initiated when I asked the guitar tech at my local shop if my Epiphone LP Standard was a flame top. He replied that it was a "Simulated" flame top and that the top was a "Picture" and not actual wood grain.

My question is what are the best combinations or wood types for guitars? Are there any Epiphone LP copies that have really good craftmanship as far as the type of wood and "TOP"?

Is there a website somewhere that might explain all the diferrent types of woods ussed to make guitars?

Thx for any help.

Anyone know if there is such a thing as......
by DeanMann on Mon Mar 07, 2005 2:20 am
Someone told me a few years ago someone made a pick guard for an AVALANCHE style (strat) that moved the volume knob away.

I like to play my sons Avalanche but really don't like where the volume knob is. This is the main reason I HATE STRAT STYLE GUITARS!!!

I'm a very sloppy player I guess.

SO, anyone know where I can find one?

Here is the guitar, DO NOT LIKE THE VOLUME LOCATION AT ALL!!!

Madre reminded me that I hadn't shared some news of my own. My wife and I have decided NOT to get divorced. 21 years of marriage was just too much to put aside. We've had some looooooong discussions lately, things that needed to be said for many years. It's been a good week!
Fostex MR-8 recorders
by Jag Panzer on Mon Mar 07, 2005 3:57 pm
I remember a while back Tom (and a few others I think) we're interested in the Fostex MR-8 digital recorder. I recall that memory card compatibility was a potential issue.

I wanted to report that I upgraded mine to the latest bios, which supports a wider variety of compact flash cards.

I then went to Sams Club and purchased a cheap ($70?) 1 gig compact flash card.

Works great in the MR-8!

New music, Likes and dislikes,
by AdamTHEdeviL on Mon Mar 07, 2005 5:18 pm
I at this time am not a Dean owner yet, but from listening to Dime and all of you talk about how sweet they are, i will be getting one very soon. Maybe it's just me but i turn on the radio now and find myself wanting to stab my eye out and run over it. That way i don't have to see what i'm listening to. I'm tired of people whining, kind of funny because that's exactly what i'm doing now, but i was just wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on new music being complete crap.
Wood Back and Sides???????????
by cadillac#21 on Mon Mar 07, 2005 11:27 pm
Hey Guys!
Just wondering do any of the Dean Acoustic Guitars come with Solid tops? And/or Solid Wood Back and Sides?
Or do all Dean acoustics have a Wood Veneer back and sides?

If so which ones have what? It doesn't say in any of the product literature.

Thanks!
I'm becoming a softsynth fanatic!
by Jag Panzer on Tue Mar 08, 2005 1:32 am
I've always loved synthesizers, even though they don't show up much in my music.

I've got 7 synths. Either rackmount or keys.

I haven't even turned them on in 6 months.

Software synths have become amazing! These $50 and $100 little virtual synths sound bigger, better and more interesting then my $$$$$ hardware.

What's next in music technology???

Intonation question
by Powerglide350 on Tue Mar 08, 2005 4:12 am
I was adjusting the intonation on my ML and every time I held the note on the 12th fret the pitch steadily dropped. Is this from the strings not being stretched enough? I eventually got it but the dropping note seemed kind of weird and never happened to me before. I tried to hold steady pressure on it and tested the notes all the way up the board. (same thing)

I am using a Korg DT-1 Rackmounted tuner.

I shipped a model car to a guy through Fed Ex Ground. The model got obliterated in shipping. I filed a claim with Fed ex and they had me fill out a whole big form which I had to fill out and send in. I received a check from them in the full amount before I mailed the info in.

Some praise for the '79 series
by Jag Panzer on Tue Mar 08, 2005 3:23 pm
I have a friend that works in a vintage guitar shop here in town. This guys been working on all my guitars for years. He's outstanding.

I called him up last week and said that I wanted to bring in my '79 V. I asked him to set it up and swap out any parts he feels need it. He mentioned that the '79's are very good guitars but maybe he'll look into pickups, tuners, nut and bridge.

I've got Duncan Distortions in my '79 so he didn't need to do anything with the pickups.

He called me last night and said the guitar was done. I asked him what I owe him. 'Nothing', he said.

He said that while I certainly could upgrade some of the hardware if I wanted to, he didn't think it was needed. His words 'This thing's got some decent hardware on it. Nothing like what I expected. These guitars are a bargain for what they sell 'em for'.

New pointy guitar
by BobtheNuke on Tue Mar 08, 2005 4:50 pm
Well, not pointy the way you guys would think, but this could be a deadly serious weapon. Some of you older (I mean *real older* guys may remember this model from back in the day. It wasn't the best made git at the time (actually far from it) but this reissue is excellent in every way.

I got this a few weeks ago, did a complete setup (the one from the dealer was fine, but just not for me) and what I thought would be a very interesting P-90 guitar ended up being just outstanding.

I've never owned a black guitar for the simple reason I just don't like that color (technically not a *color*, I know) but this guitar in black really caught my eye so after over 40 years I have now gone over to the "dark" side. Smile

if you are not using planet wave trim loc tuners you have to try them they are so much better than anything out there even sperzels. i put a set on my belaire and on my les paul knock of and i can't believe the difference from my old sperzels.. one of the features that i like ( besides keeping perfect tune) is that they trim the strings for you when you tighten them... and on top of it all... they are cheaper than sperzels..

Guitarmageddon!!!!!!!
by Thor Malleuson on Wed Mar 09, 2005 3:57 am
Meinefinker and myself had the pleasure of playing at our local Guitar Center's Guitarmageddon 2005. Neither of us knew the other was going to be there! Man, can he rip it up! Had a few people inquiring about my new Dean too. Most were surprised that Dean Guitars still existed. Meinefinker's guitar sounded awesome. He has a Frankenstein Tele from Hell complete with an 'F' hole. He sounded really good, and can he play!

The competition was pretty fierce, there were some really good guitarists playing. Suffice to say, neither of us go on to the next part of the competition. So it goes. Although one of the guys picked was one of my choices, so everything seemed pretty up and up.

The amps that they had sounded pretty weak. AVOID THE MARSHALL MODE FOUR - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. For the price Marshall wants for that hamburger frier you can get yourself a really good Splawn Quickrod. They really should have had the sound set up before hand too. Some contestants had difficulty as they could not hear either themselves or the track playing.

I got home at about 9PM, had a bite to eat and then recorded what I played in a take - be kind, it is kind of sloppy. I wanted to capture what I played as I just came up with it this past Sunday and will probably use some of it for a song that we are writing.

Thor's Submission

The idea of the competition is that Guitar Center supplies contestants with a CD of 18 backing tracks and you are supposed to chose one and play something along with it. I thought I would do something a little different as I figured people were just going to shred all over the place (and in fact some did - but they were really cool d00ds!). I am glad that I did it as I had never done a guitar competition before and most likely won't ever again. Special Ed (our bassist) said I was probably going to lose to a six year old. The greatest thing was that Meinefinker and I traded phone numbers, so now I've have yet another local guitar buddy!

-- edit --
I recorded the piece on the Fostex MR-8 using my TC V through a V-Amp2 with no effects (to late to hook up the Powerball and mics!). I was tempted to double the part too, but I figured that I wanted to hear it as the crowd heard it.

Fret buzz correction question
by transblueZ on Wed Mar 09, 2005 9:12 pm
I just got done setting up the Evo I picked up on Ebay. Got the action set up where I like it, and seem to have 3 dead spots. 14th and 6th fret on the G string and one somewhere else on another string (don't have the guitar in front of me right now to check)
All the string ring nicely with no noise open or in any other spots (except if I bend a different string into the dead zone)
This mean I have a fret too high at the dead area? If so, could it mean it came loose and rose? or needs to be filed down a bit in this area?
Great Story........ update
by CherryBurstV on Wed Mar 09, 2005 9:38 pm
A little while back I had posted a story of kids at a nearby High School wanting to have bands a talent show. After a bunch of crap, the school decided to let them. This is the cool part....... Dee Snider(Twisted Sister) got wind of this. He 's a Philadelphia DJ now. He was bitchin on the air about this school not letting, and the kids having to beg and plead their case to have live bands. So he's gonna show up at the talent show. Apparently one of the bands does "We're not Gonna Take it". He said he "might even join them on stage... if asked". How cool woud that be..
Is Ian onto something???
by BadClams on Thu Mar 10, 2005 12:52 am
While this may well be a case of me showing my ignorance, I'm wondering what the concensus is on the subject of bypassing the tone controls on a guitar.

Ian at DOA mentioned that he felt a significant gain in tone quality was gained by getting rid of his tone pots from the signal chain in one of his guitars. Seemed interesting. Then I read in my current GUITARIST that, in 2 separate articles, both Slash ("electronics are bypassed...for a direct link from pickup to output") AND Glen Tipton ("Gibson SG's..have been re-wired to have both tone controls deactivated") have modified wirings.

So the question is, what gives? Are there specific cases where this is a good idea? Are most tone controls a generic "off the shelf" part that can get in the way of TONE?
I've added a new amp to my collection...
by Anonymous on Thu Mar 10, 2005 2:09 am
Well, I have added the Roland Cube 60 to my collection of toys. It's a nice little practice amp, it does what I need it to. To top it off, it's LOUD. Loudest little 60W amp I have ever heard. Some of the amp models on here are bad like the 5150 model and the Marshall stack model. My personal favorite is the Mesa Rectifier model, although I don't think it sounds anything like a Mesa Rectifier. It's fun to mess around with and I have yet to hook it up to my Marshall cab and crank it up some, though. If any of you have some settings that are fun to mess with, let me know and I'll try them out.

Fun Facts about Alcohol
by Faust on Thu Mar 10, 2005 7:44 am
Did you know that the human body produces its own supply of alcohol naturally on a continous basis, 24 hours a day, seven days a week?

Did you know that the world's oldest known recipe is for beer?
The word "toast," meaning a wish of good health, started in ancient Rome, where a piece of toasted bread was dropped into wine.

Vikings used the skulls of their enemies as drinking vessels.

Anyone under the age of 21 who takes out household trash containing even a single empty alcohol beverage container can be charged with illegal possession of alcohol in Missouri.

While there wasn't any cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, or pumpkin pie to eat at the first Thanksgiving, there was beer, brandy, gin, and wine to drink.

Of Texas' 254 counties, 79 are still completely dry seven decades after the Repeal of Prohibition. Many of the remaining counties are "moist" or partially dry. Some permit one form of alcohol beverage but not another, some prohibit on-premise consumption (except for private clubs), some permit (believe it or not) on-premise but no off-premise consumption, and some have other strange variations, often directly across the street from each other.

Many high school cafeterias in Europe serve alcohol to their students who choose to drink.

McDonald's restaurants in some European countries serve alcohol because otherwise parents would be less willing to take their children to them.

Flying While Intoxicated - Some birds haven't learned when to say when. Thousands of Waxwing birds in Sweden became intoxicated by gourging on fermenting berries. About 50 lost their lives by flying into nearby windows.

The U.S. has the strictest youth drinking laws in Western civilization.

While in some countries the penalty for driving while intoxicated can be death (yes, death), in Uruguay intoxication is a legal excuse for having an accident while driving. "Please believe me officer, I really was drunk."

It's illegal in Utah to advertise drink prices, alcohol brands, to show a "drinking scene," to promote happy hour, to advertise free food, or for restaurants to furnish alcohol beverage lists unless a customer specifically requests one

The Aztec of Mexico used a "rabbit scale" to describe degrees of intoxication. It ranged from very mild intoxication (a few rabbits) to heavy drunkenness (400 rabbits).

The highest price ever paid for distilled spirits at auction was $79,552 for a 50-year-old bottle of Glenfiddich whisky in 1992.

Although the French wine, "Fat Bastard," is now distributed in 22 states in the US. both Texas and Ohio have b@nned its sale within their borders.

Don't plan on running a "tab" in Iowa; it's illegal.

The entire Encyclopedia Britannica is b@nned in Texas because it contains a recipe for making beer that can be used at home.

Texas state law prohibits taking more than three sips of beer at a time while standing.

In Houston, Texas, beer many not be purchased after midnight on Sunday, but can be purchased anytime on Monday...which happens to begin right after midnight on Sunday! So it's illegal to buy it when its legal to buy it?

Ohio state law prohibits getting a fish drunk.

In Fairbanks, Alaska, it's illegal to feed a moose any alcohol beverage.

It's illegal to sit on any street curb in St. Louis, Missouri, and drink beer from a bucket.

Need help from you Dean experts

I know that many of you can help me out with this.

Today is the big day. I've been waiting for years for this day. It's the day where I get the ball rolling on a custom Dean.

Most of you have several of these, but I've always just bought Deans off the shelf. I've wanted a custom one since I was 17. I'm VERY excited!

Here's where I need help -

I don't know the different between the series headstocks.

I don't know about different binding.

There is probably a lot more that I don't even know that I should know about.

Here's what I like -

I LOVE the Water V. What specs does it have?

Thor's V is incredible. Whats specs on that one?

Any help on educating me on the finer points of high-end Deans is MUCH appreciated!

by Nekrotek on Thu Mar 10, 2005 11:46 pm
Hi there Dean Community, I just got my new Dean Performer Denim "faded black" in and the thing is paaaarrrdy and sounds great.

But the one thing is the set up on it is a little whacked. The strings in the upper octaves are almost a 1/2 and inch off the neck, the strings are fine by the nut. I didn't expect it to have the best set up on it, but is seems way out. IMO

I haven't had an acoustic in a very long time and never have worked on one. Will sanding the bridge down some solve this issue? I have done set-up's on electrics, just havent worked on a acoustic before.

Looking for 2 more judges for the DOA Guitarmageddon Contest
by transblueZ on Fri Mar 11, 2005 4:26 am
Inspired by Thor's thread and thank you meinefinker
for the link and Bloodroot for coming up with the idea of having a DOA competition.

DOCOZZ has volunteered to be a judge, looking for 2 more. Anyone that decides to be a judge can't submit a tune.
No prizes other than a big ATTABOY (or ATTAGIRL)
Just pick a backing track, record something over it and submit to DOAGuitarmageddon@yahoo.com (have 200 megs, pls keep things in MP3 format and file sizes to a few megs)
Name the file your username_catagory.mp3
I will then rename the files and send the judges (as to avoid bribes and whatnot)
Any ideas on 3 catagories we can use to judge the submissions on?
Best Shredfest Wankering (Satch, Vai, Malmsteen)
Best Emotional Feely Solo (David Gilmore, Gary Moore, etc)
Best Way Out There (Guitar affects are fun to use!)

Something along those lines. Looking for 2 more judges and some suggestions on better catagories, or someone to donate prize(s) if they'd like.

The Backing Tracks.

Parts for my ML
by cyd666 on Fri Mar 11, 2005 8:53 am
Hey,

Can anyone tell me where I can get some replacement parts for my ML? I need a new V shaped tail piece in black . Mine is pretty battered up. Also someone replaced the round plate for the jack with a chrome one. so I want a black one for that. I have looked on ebay and have not found much. I have read on here that the tail piece is a different size from standard on the Deans. Thanks for the help!

I've seen it before and I believe it's been flying around the interweb for some time now but the quality always been really poor. This version is quality though, and it looks like more of the same to come if I've read correctly from the website.

Try this link:

If it doesn't work go to :

Friday Humor - "The Ranch Hand"
by Rex Herring on Fri Mar 11, 2005 6:55 pm
Subject: The Ranch Hand

A successful rancher died and left everything to his devoted wife. She was a

very good-looking woman, and determined to keep the ranch, but knew

very little about ranching, so she decided to place an ad in the newspaper

for a ranch hand. Two men applied for the job. One was @#$%&$@ and the other a drunk.

She thought long and hard about it, and when no one else applied she decided

to hire the @#$%&$@ guy, figuring it would be safer to have him around the house than the drunk.

He proved to be a hard worker who put in long hours every day and knew a lot

about ranching. For weeks, the two of them worked, and the ranch was doing

very well.

Then one day, the rancher's widow said to the hired hand,

"You have done a really good job, and the ranch looks great. You should go

into town and kick up your heels."

The hired hand readily agreed and went into town one Saturday night.

One o'clock came, however, and he didn't return. Two o'clock, and no hired

hand.

He returned around two-thirty, and upon entering the room, he found the

rancher's widow sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, waiting for

him. She quietly called him over to her.

"Unbutton my blouse and take it off," she said. Trembling, he did as she

directed. "Now take off my boots." He did as she asked, ever so slowly.

"Now take off my socks." He removed each gently and placed them neatly by her

boots. "Now take off my skirt." He slowly unbuttoned it, constantly watching

her eyes in the fire light. "Now take off my bra." Again, with trembling

hands, he did as he was told and dropped it to the floor. "Now," she

said, "take off my panties." By the light of the fire, he slowly pulled them

down and off.

Then she looked at him and said, "If you ever wear my clothes into town

again, you're fired."

BLS in Tempe, AZ Last Night..WOW!
by jade on Fri Mar 11, 2005 9:44 pm
i'll just copy and paste what I've put on the dallasentertainment.com boards....

that was a great f'ing show!

Me and my friend were probably 15ft from the stage, about right inbetween Zakk and James...right on the edge of the pit.

Anyway, we didn't get there till about 15minutes before BLS took the stage. My friend who was driving got off work late, so we didnt leave Tucson till almost 7...and then there was absolutely NO parking at the venue, so we had to park quite a ways away, took us about 25 minutes to walk from the truck to the venue...that's a long walk after a long drive! But definitley worth all the effort.

As soon as we got there, we got in the beer line, double fisted some brews, and made our way onto the floor just as BLS was starting up.

This was my first time to see BLS and I was very excited..and when I left, I wasn't dissapointed at all. Seeing Zakk rip his guitar to shreads live was amazing. I got the same feeling watching him as I did every time I witnessed Dime do the exact same thing.... I have now seen the two guitarists that I have looked up to the most for years do what they do best.
setlist:

Stoned & Drunk
Destruction Overdrive
Been A Long Time
Funeral Bell
Suffering Overdue
In This River
Suicide Messiah
Demise Of Sanity
Spread Your Wings
Spoke In The Wheel (3/4ths of the way through it becomes a full band arrangement)
Fire It Up
Stillborn
Genocide Junkies

I thought the set list rocked...

If you want to see a bunch of big sweaty angry/pumped/drunk metal heads get emotional? Look around while Zakk is talking about Dime and how "In This River" will forever be Dime's song...add in 3 VERY emotional guitar solos (beginning, middle, end) and damn..I'd be lying if I said I didn't get a little choked up during that song, it seriously gave me the chills listening to it and watching Zakk play his heart out...I was wearing my Dime tribute shirt, and I was holding it in the air pretty much the whole time. He was definitley there with us last night...

Also before Spoke In The Wheel, everyone else left the stage and Zakk busted out a nice little acoustic classical guitar shredding for a few minutes, then proceeded to play Spoke In The Wheel...then, as noted in the setlist, the rest of the band came back onstage and finished out the song.

One last note about the show, it was VERY cool of NICK to be rockin the Dime guitars onstage...he did them justice, and it was really cool to see those guitars up on stage, where they belong.

All in all, the show rocked!! and it was sold out show, so if BLS is comin near you, do yourself a favor and get tickets *early* and go enjoy a GREAT show!

check out this b.s. About 3 or so years ago when my girlfriend(future wife) came up pregnant, I didn't have a job so I ended up pawning my dean, 2 amp heads, and a 4x12 cab for 200 bucks so we could pay the electric bill. Well, I got my dean and cab back recently, so I need a head. I went to the pawn shop where I had pawned the stuff at, and there was one of the heads I had pawned. originally, I got this head at a music go round and traded an ancient flanger and 15 bucks for it. The pawn shop has this Road brand head priced at 199.00! I pawned everything for 200! Crazy small town B.S. man. Anyway, still got no head Sad

The Avalanche One has arrived. UPS managed to deliver it to the wrong location AGAIN, but my neighbor graciously took it in for me. I am suprised to say the least. This is the second Avalanche Ive owned, I bought the first one used and it was a piece of crap. After some research and talking to Dave at B&T I decided to try another one. No comparison at all like a totally different guitar. This thing came setup the way I like it and plays very nice. The body is heavier than the first one which is a big plus and the tone is killer. I have been playing some strats before I decided to buy this axe and I have to tell ya, I could not afford the Fender that it would take to beat this baby. THANKS DAVE!!!!! My son just gave me his old digital camera so I will be posting some guitar porn soon. After I figure the camera out of course Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy If you are in the market for a Dean call Dave he's the best.

jazz trip
by j.arledge on Sat Mar 12, 2005 4:05 pm
well my school jazz band went on a trip yesterday to Weatherford College of music and fine arts for a jazz seminar type thing were every band played and then had a private critique from one of the "profressional" jazz instructors. After that they broke off and every one went to master classes, it was cool because guitar bass and drums were all back in the aduitorium together.

After that was done we drove to a mall up the interstate aways and we got spend about an hour there, which in a way was kind of pointless beacuse the mall was huge, i though for sure i was going to get lost or something but it turned out good.

Then we went back to weatherford to listen to a selected high school band play, a 5 a school from Kileen made it (i think they were from kileen oh well) anyways by then i was really tired and had heard all the jazz i wanted to, but the evening concert started at 8:30 and didn't end till like 10:30.

That was probably the longest time i have ever spent in a bus in my life, 4 hours each way, we didn't home till 2 in the morning, . It was really cool though i learned a lot of stuff and i know that it will help with my overall guitar playing not just jazz.
And also i ended up with a girlfriend, that made things soo much better.

Well i though i would share my expericence and if you ever get a chance to see or hear real jazz stuff, it does help out with, wether you like the music or not.
More questions about Caddys
by Jag Panzer on Sat Mar 12, 2005 5:12 pm
What kind of pickups are in Caddys (the U.S. TC models). The specs aren't up on the site.

Also, for those that saw the 2-pup Exotic Redwood Caddy at Dean, I have a question for you -

I like the redwood tops I've seen on Hardtails, but they don't floor me. But the redwood top on the 3-pup Caddy shown here on the site is INCREDIBLE. The difference (to me) is that the redwood top on the Caddy looks like a figured maple pattern. It's not simply stripes in the wood. The redwood hardtail looks more like stripes.

Any help appreciated.

by DIMEBAG JOE on Sun Mar 13, 2005 4:23 am
Is it just me or does modern day metal make you almost embarrased to watch it? Whats up with all the makeup and crappy vocals? I have been watching or at least trying to watch Headbangers Ball and I have to keep changing the channel. All the music sounds the same, and its just some douche screaming as hard as he can with no change of tone in his voice at all. Then you have these wankers in their leather and cool makeup. Please. Just watched a band called Behemoth. What a load of crap. Lets ride the double bass pedal for the whole song and "sing" like a really long burp. Man, time for a metal revolution. Metal is getting as predictable as pop and rap.

Amp speaker question ...
by clmazza7 on Sun Mar 13, 2005 8:01 pm
I have an old vintage amp that I'm in the process of restoring (most likely not to original specs.. just trying to get it to work!) The original speaker is a single 10" 4 ohm and I was wondering if I can replace it with an 8 ohm? If so, will it affect anything or do you recommend trying to find a replacement 10" 4 ohm?

Another real pain has been finding vintage Mollard tubes. Man these things can get expensive!

Thanks!

Coil Splitting...
by Faust on Mon Mar 14, 2005 10:29 am
Sucks!

I wired up and EVO with coil splitting switches and it was terrible. I was convinced that something must be wrong.... but I checked the operation of it and it was definitely splitting the humbuckers... but it sounded like total crap!

With the 500XL pickup in the bridge, the sound did not change much... just got a little weaker when "split", but it certainly did not sound like any good single coil pickup I own on a Strat or a Telecaster!.The Pearly Gates in the neck position was terrible split. the volume dropped out so far that it sounded weird when it was fighting my noise gate... even with the noise gate off it sounded weak and pathetic.

It makes sense though... since the Pearly Gates neck pickup measures at about 7.4K ohms with both coils in series.. one can expect an anemic pickup with less than 4K ohms on the windings of half of the pickup. A good "vintage" style single coil Strat pickup is wound to around 6.5K.

The 500 XL "worked" when split... but sounded like a weak 500XL. I could see no application for that tone either. A Telecaster or Strat bridge pickup has tons of "bite"... half of a 500XL had an acceptabe tone... but sounded like a dumbed-down version of a single coil. Not good enough for me.

After four hours of fadoodling with it, I cut the switching pots out with wire cutters and threw them into the trash where they belong. Tomorrow it will be wired with two volume knobs and no tone control.

I have never heard a coil splitter that I liked and this was definitely no exception. It seems like the switch robs tone from the circuit even when the coils are both on. This explains why I hated the sound of the 2500-3500 dollar PRS guitars that I tried at Guitar Center... they all had a 5 position rotary switch that sounded like crap no matter where I turned it.

What is the difference between a Harley and a Hoover ?
The position of the dirt bag.

Why is air a lot like grox?
Because it's no big deal unless you're not getting any.

What do you call a smart blonde?
A golden retriever.

What's the difference between a girlfriend and wife?

What's the difference between a boyfriend and husband?

Why is it so hard for women to find men that are sensitive, caring, and good-looking?
Because those men already have boyfriends.

What did the blonde say when she found out she was pregnant?
"Are you sure it's mine?"

Why does Mike Tyson cry during grox?
Mace will do that to you .

Why did OJ Simpson want to move to West Virginia ?
Everyone has the same DNA.

April 25th in Milwaukee at the WAMI Awards Show! (WAMI is Wisconsin Area Music Industry). The two will play together on stage.

http://wamimusic.com/events/award/

Now is the perfect opportunity to get a Dean into Jim's hands. Get 'em a Hardtail and finesse it through Michael. They are buds and have worked together before. Jim also owns a few vintage Deans as well. With all the artists he co-writes with it will give Dean tremendous publicity. Plus you won't have to give him a slew of 'em cause he doesn't really tour anymore as all the artists come to Chicago to work with him in his studios.

Buddy Guy... For all you blues fans
by CherryBurstV on Tue Mar 15, 2005 2:15 am
Saw Buddy Guy last night here in Lancaster PA. He was great. Although I thought he would play a little more. Not longer, more. He didn't play his guitar all that much. His old fingers must not work as long anymore. What a band. Awesome musicians. He didn't play his signature polkadot Strat. I was looking forward to that. He played an old Tele with a strat neck. Definatley got my money's worth though. Oh.. got an autograph too. I was in the second row, center. At the end of the show he came to the front of the stage and started signing autographs while the band jammed on. How cool !

HI all....anyone going to this? it's at the Odeon in cleveland.

I never heard of the show before, but I think the list of bands are awesome. With Jag Panzer...I know we have a guy here whose name is Jag Panzer
Shocked sorry i dont know offhand who he is, but that's pretty awesome, I was reading on the Jag Panzer website, I never heard of Jag Panzer before either, but I am listening to their music I got from their site, I like it, great guitars and good vocals, so this will be an interesting show.

If anyone else is going, I think it would be cool to all meet up and have some beers or whatever. Hopefully me and a friend will be going, or it might be just myself, my friend doesn't really have any musical taste, he's pretty close minded....he's never heard of any of the bands Rolling Eyes so espically if I go by myself it will suck to drive the 2hrs to cleveland to be by myself.

so post back if you are going...i'll know for sure if i'm going in a few weeks and i'll post more details then. Very Happy

I wanted to give an extra shout out to Dave for another great job...

Not only has he been awesome in taking care of my guitar needs...one of my new drum students recently got in the market for a kit. Dave made a great recommendation on a kit I had not seen before and put together a killer deal. The student (and parents) are thrilled, as am I. Great value, good quality, and an all-around win-win.

Thanks again, Dave!

toy guitar from the early 80's
by marker on Tue Mar 15, 2005 3:53 pm
Hey all you guitarheads, I know at some point we all had toy guitars. I am looking for a toy guitar that I had when I was 6 or 7. It would have been in the early 80's. I remember it being red and it had four fat strings on it. Seems like it had a wammy bar thing. Since my daughter is starting to pickup guitar, I wanted to get her one like I used to have because it rocked. Any of you guys know what toy guitar I am talking about or what it is called?

There is a Dime guitar hanging up at the HRC louisville. It is covered in leopard skin fuzzy material, and is beside a pic of Dime, with a handwritten note about him creating this one as a tribute to Rev. Billy G. of ZZ Top. Anybody know the story on it? I'll try to get pictures tommorrow. it looks like a washburn, until you look under the edge of it, and can see the wood. Then it looks like it might be a Dean...the horns look more rounded than the Washburns....

Help with scales
by Filthy Mess on Tue Mar 15, 2005 10:37 pm
Someone asked this already with regards to helping them out on the solo front, but I can't find the thread.

To cut a long story short, someone had offered to e-mail a number of scale patterns for this chap to practice with and I was wondering, if anyone recognises this, if they would mind doing the same for me. I've been to one or two websites, but they don't seem to be layed out very clearly, at least not for my easily confused brain.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers,
Ally.
TC Caddy on the way!
by Jag Panzer on Tue Mar 15, 2005 10:39 pm
I ordered a Caddy today.

Triple Pickup Tigereye

I'll be replacing the bridge pickup with a Bare Knuckle Miracle Man pickup.

I was certain that I was going to order the Redwood Caddy. Until I saw a picture of it. It's flame redwood, not redwood burl.

I have a giant (1200 sq ft) redwood deck on my house. It pretty much looks exactly like flame redwood. I stain that deck every year by hand rubbing it. It takes me 4 days of hard work to do this. I couldn't stand to play a guitar that reminds me of hard work. So no flame redwood guitars for me.

RIP Danny Joe Brown

I've been in the middle of a VERY LONG inventory & baseball weekend. I have not had time to catch up on the news of the week. I read today that Danny Joe Brown of Molly Hatchet died on the 10th.

I was a Hatchet from "the day". On January 15th 1980 I saw them on the "Flirtin' With Disaster” Tour. I remember the night very well because it was 3 days before I turned 18. It was also the night that I almost wound up in a riot. Someone threw a bottle on stage, glanced off a symbol & it hit the drummer in the head. Danny Joe asked that no one throw stuff because someone could get hurt, and as he said that, someone lobbed a 5th of some bourbon onto the stage landing at his feet. Well Danny Joe threw his mike down & stormed off the stage. Couldn’t blame him, but all hell broke loose. To this day I don’t think I have ever seen that many bottles in one place. IT RAINED BOTTLES FOR 5 SOLID MINUTES!!!

Well Danny Joe came back out & made a statement & decided to play after all. When it settled down, I went to get a tee shirt only to run into over 150 riot equipped cops. After the stage was cleaned up from all the glass, the show went on. It was a most excellent show.

38-Special was the opening act, they were VERY UNKNOWN at the time, but I was blown away. They were VERY GOOD. Point blank played second (a TOTAL waist of time).

A few years later, I was at a Pat Travers show in North Central Arkansas and Hatchet was the headliner. WITH Danny Joe singing. I was in heaven. I was standing ON STAGE watching Pat play with Danny Joe Brown on one side of me & Riff West (Bassist) on the other. Riff said “I HATE these gigs where Pat opens for us.” I looked at Danny Joe then back at Riff & asked why? He said “LOOK AT THEM, WE CAN’T HANG WITH THEM!!! I can’t hang with MARS (PT Bass Player), THEY ARE AWESOME!!” I then looked at Danny Joe & he nodded his head in agreement. Later we were on the Hatchet bus………… All I can say is, what a great bunch of guys. Both Pats group & Hatchet. We partied that night with Pat…….. but that’s another story……..

Some of you younger guys don’t know much about Hatchet, Just know that “Flirtin’ With Disaster” was PLATINUM 2 weeks out of the chute. Most of you probably think they are just an old worn out red-neck southern rock band. To me, it was my teen age years & THEY ROCKED!!! I was fortunate to have seen them in their hay day, and even more fortunate to have hung out with them on & OFF stage.

Danny Joe LOVED his Jack….. Looks like it got the better of him.

SO………

RIP DANNY JOE!!! This ole Southern Boy will miss you.

Can someone with a TC Caddy do me a HUGE favor???

I need the length/width/depth of the case.

I may be able to use a Pelican case for this guitar. I use Pelican cases for my camera gear and they are incredible. I've had a large case with 3 cameras fall down 3 flights of stairs. The cameras weren't damaged at all.

Pelican doesn't make guitar cases, but they told me that guys have used Pelican gun cases for electric guitars.

Our band, Infensus, made a four track demo about two weeks ago. Download using BT from http://trackerwww.prq.to/download.php/3301812/Infensus_-_Damnation_Rewind.torrent or download the individual songs http://salves.net/Infensus_-_Damnation_Rewind/ there. NOTE: .ogg format, play in winamp or download OggDs for your WMP.
Update: mp3s can be found http://salves.net/Infensus_-_Damnation_Rewind/dirty_nasty_mp3s/ there.

I would say it's almost like heavy metal with a more evil vocal. If someone wants to determine a more precise genre, by all means, spill it out.

B-52 amps?

Amp Wattage/OHMs/etc.
by Anonymous on Thu Mar 17, 2005 2:07 am
There's a few questions I have on amps and their wattage, ohms, and how loud they get. My next investment is going to be a tube head. The Marshall I have now just isn't cutting it, it bores the hell out of me, sounds a little bit better than any other solid state POS, but still resembles the solid states. I have to be shnazzy and have all that awesome tube tone. I have been looking into the details and whatnot.

From what I hear 100W SS and 100W tube are two completely different worlds. Some people say that 50W tube will about blow a 100W solid state out of the water. I was wondering if this was true. Because I want a loud amp, but I don't want it turned down really low so I don't get the nice tube amp sound.

Ohms is another thing I'm concerned about. I have a 8ohm Marshall cab. I just have all around been confused with the whole concept of ohms, so I'm just really wanting a crash course on this.

Do adding speakers (like having a second cab) really produce a louder sound or does it just spread the sound out more?

I think I'm set on getting a Mesa Rectifier, but I'm just wondering if I should snag a dual rectifier or a single. Fill me in guys. Thanks.

Hand Pain and mobility problems.
by Faust on Thu Mar 17, 2005 10:28 am
I have been experiencing pain and problems with moving my fingers over the last few years. It does not feel like the joints are messed up, but rather the tendons and muscles are sore and fatiqued which makes it damn near impossible to play guitar or write using a pen. typing does not seem to be as bad because I don't have to hold anything for a long time... just pecking keys is OK overall... painful but do-able.

Does anyone else have problems with their hands? I do plan to seek medical attention... I just wanted to get a feel for what might be going on first.

Today when I went to Fedex to ship some stuff I had to have the girl behind the counter fill out my paperwork for me... I could not do it.

79 MLF Wiring

Ok, my replacement MLF will arrive in April. My BL L500XL and SD '59 pickups are arriving soon as well. I need help though, please share your thoughts.

I could care less about using both humbuckers together at the same time. I do however, LOVE the '59 coil tapped. So i was wondering, if this idea i have is possible with a 3 way switch.

Position 1: Bridge Humbucker
Position 2: Neck Humbucker only 1 coil
Position 3: Neck Humbucker

If it requires picking up a new switch, so be it. But i think this is a MUCH more useful setup.

I met David Lee Roth today
by NickM on Fri Mar 18, 2005 12:57 am
I didn't recognize him until after I got home. He lives im my city, and I was riding my bike near the beach here and he (I didn't know it was him, I thought it was some dirtbag) came up to me and offered to pay me $20 to use my cell phone. I said no because I didn't know who he was at first, and I was expecting him to try to steal my phone. But apparently he was at a bowling place around here and offered someone $500 or something to teach him how to bowl.

Talk about WEIRD!

Any Jazz Players Here?
by silver67 on Fri Mar 18, 2005 5:01 am
Im asking anyone if anyone here owns or has tried out a Stylist Deluxe series here.If so can you get a good jazz tone out of those? And are they good enough or better than an Ibanez Artcore series or a Gibson archtop?I have been taking Jazz lessons from my friend since he is going to college learning that.He has a bad ass Gibson archtop but you know how expensive those are.About 3 to 5 thounsand bucks! Shocked Jesus man!Anyways just wanting to know because the stylist deluxe looks fantastic. Cool

Does anyone know if Albert King used his Gibson V to record "Born Under A Bad Sign"???? It has always been one of my favorite records but the tone just doesnt seem thick enough to be his Gibson V. It sounds more like a Tele to me. Anyone know?

IIRC, the other one of these listed and did not sell on Evilbay at $10,000 . This one is gonna get to rich for my blood but WOW!!!!...... I'll be surprised if it sells on the auction due to price or backdoor deal.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...=ADME:B:SS:US:1

I have it's single necked brother. It listed for $3800 but I got it on Evilbay from Musicians Exchange for a BIN of $600. Cant say this one will go for that kind of percent off the list but man isn't this cool?

Can anyone tell me what you think about the neck pitch on the auction listing. Does that compare to other double necks you have seen and why would he not make them the same? The pitch on mine is so off he had to grind the bridge bottom to lower the strings enough. Shocked Neck on mine is FAT!!! OH YEAH Chunky Korina!!! Twisted Evil

How to clean dirt from a fretboard
by Cazz on Sat Mar 19, 2005 4:12 pm

by Jaxx on Sat Mar 19, 2005 6:08 pm
thanks a lot! (sarcastically)

here i was...happy with my axe collection...really liked my EVO Premium....LP Cutsom...PRS Custom24....

then i bought a HardTail Pro....

after about 5 months....well beyond honeymoon period....

it has become my #1...

so....NOW...i can't stop thinking about the full blown USA HardTail....and mabye a nice Caddy....thereby selling the LP and/or PRS....

do you SEE the quandary i'm now faced with???

do you UNDERSTAND what you've done to me???

i'm trying to FORCE myself to take my time...keep playing my other guitars...not make any rash decisions...

you're making this tough to do...

yeah...sitting around there, making guitars that blow away the competition...

enticing us to give up our previously coveted instruments...

you're guitars are supposed to be aimed at the 'METAL' market....not blowing away the classic 'BLUES' and 'BLUES/ROCK' guitars....

i'm not the type to have several of the same type of guitar....i keep several guitars with different sounds and playability for different styles...

if i could only keep 1 of the nice collection i currently have...it'd be the HT Pro....do not EVER stop making this model....just upgrade the pots.....i've never touched a more awesome, versatile guitar...

my PRS Custom24 was the Holy Grail for years...NOW i believe the USA HardTail is better.....just who the hell do you think you are???
the BEST guitar company around??? do you REALLY think you're THAT good???..............

do you have the CAJONES to say that???........

well...i still have to try a few Dean models to be sure of the whole line...but if i were the CEO of Gibson, or Paul R Smith, i'd absolutely HATE you...

however....since i'm neither of the above....just another guy trying to reproduce what he feels in his soul and hears in his head....i can only think of ONE thing left to say....

thank you...

Peavey XXL

Hey All,

I'm looking for a realtively affordable half stack, and I have read some good things about the Peavey XXL. I used to have a Marshall Full Stack and didn't like it. I like solid state amps also. I was wondering if any of you have heard one of these, own one, or have tried it out.

Please let me know what you think:)

by DeanBELAIREguy on Mon Mar 21, 2005 1:54 pm
i haven't played with a band in a long time.. i just got fed up with the attidudes and the drama.. so lately i have had the urge to ty again.. i figured that if i find someone my own age with kids and all that maybe we'd all have mellowed to a point thet it would be fun.. well i found a add at a local guitar shop .."Thirty's something band looking for a bass player and backing guitar and vocals for a metal band" well i think to my self ..self this sounds like a good time i like rythm and i can sing too..

so i call this guy and it turns out that he (drummer) and the lead guitarist have been jamming for about a year. so i show up last night at the drummers house with my little crate gt60 my guitar. my little epiphone tube amp and my Mic cuz i sing too..

I walk into this little laundry room i mean 12x10.. The lead guy has this full marshall stack and a rack of more effects and gadgets than most pro's have.. so i say my self ok.. well maybe it will be ok.. i get all plugged in go to tune up... he says " i play drop d only"... i should have seen it coming after that but i say fine.. so i try to drop to a d... well i have locking tuners and it wouldn't let me quite drop to a d.. so i decided i'll play bass and sing..

for the next two hours all i heard was fead back, rattling and the same tone (distorted and compressed to the max) ..for every song we did. the vocals were drowned out.. the drums where drowned out.. the bass was barely audible.. the sad thing is that this guy has some skills but why are all of you lead guitarists like that!! every one i have ever played with has been like that.. all i have to show is a headache, sore vocal chords, and a feeling that live music is dying a slow sorrowful death.

by tnvol on Tue Mar 22, 2005 8:44 am
I had to take a short trip to another FOB yesterday and snapped a couple pics. I rode up in this Armored Chevy Tahoe. I though it would be cool to show you guys. The guy I rode up with works for KBR and as soon as we loaded up he popped in a CD and cranked it and all of a sudden I hear ALL ABOARD!!! HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! So we jammed to Ozzy on the way up. It was a fun trip.
The outside looks pretty normal.
Image
Here is what the inside doors look like. That steel plate is about 1/2 inch thick and the windows are about 2 inches thick. Pretty stout!! The front windsheild is also a couple inches thick.
Image
This is the back seat. It also has the bulletproof glass and another steel plate behind the seat.
Image
This was an SF Team we passed by. I guess they were stopped to take a leak or something. Thats the only Chevy Dually I have seen in Iraq. They usually drive around in Armored SUVs. The pic is blurry because we were going so fast but there is a 50 Cal mounted in the back. Its kinda hard to see but its there. They dress like the locals.

Heavy Metal Fan Was Responsible For Worst School Shooting In U.S. Since Columbine - Mar. 22, 2005

The 17-year-old student who shot his way through his family and a tribal school in northwest Minnesota Monday (March 21), leaving 10 people dead, including himself, was described by a fellow student as a quiet boy who was into goth culture, listened to heavy metal music, wore "a big old black trench coat" and "talked about death all the time."

The Minneapolis Star Tribune named the suspect as Jeff Weise, a student or former student at the local high school on the Red Lake Indian reservation in remote northern Minnesota. Pat Mills, director of Red Lake's public safety department, said officers were not looking for any other suspects.

It was the worst school shooting in the U.S. since 15 people died in the Columbine massacre in 1999.

I have informally asked about the famous, 6 guitar run comment, in regards to having a run of Zz made with Clearcoated Mahogany bodys and necks, Clearcoated Maple Flametop, Chrome hardware, Cream colored binding on neck and headstock, made on '79 series specs, MOP Block inlays, rosewood fingerboard, Grover tuners, 2 Cream covered P-90s. Here's a little amp project I've been working on
by Mike9 on Tue Mar 22, 2005 10:43 pm
This amp started life as a Crate Vintage Club 20. A 15watt single end tube amp with 2 - 12AX7s, 2 - EL84s and a 10" speaker. It has lots of gain, but it has a hard edged, high end tone that was abrasive to my ear, but it's plenty loud. It's a good amp, but it wasn't living up to its potential so I fixed it up a little Twisted Evil. Here's a before picture of a similar amp (a VC30).
Image

Step 1: Separate the amp from the speaker with new Cabs. New cabs are constructed from 3/4" lumber core Luan (A light weight mahogany product made from glued up boards skinned over with veneers) that is stable as hell. A "detuned" cabinet has a closed back and an extra port in front so the bass that normally goes out the back comes out the front port instead. In this case a new Hellatone 30 watt "aged" Celestion G12H will be the speaker of choice. Image
Image

This pic shows the head sitting on the "detuned" speaker cab. I put diffusers in both ports. The speaker will occupy the top port. the baffles are made from 1/2" luan. The speaker cab is 32" high x 18" wide x 16" deep.
Image

The next three are the head covered and the front and back panels. One shows the patterns I had to make up for cutting the vinyl. (big pain if you've never done it FYI Wink) I made the head fairly compact and had to move a transformer - remember this came from a combo unit.
Image
Image
Image

Here is the speaker cab covered - (really a two person job)
Image

And lastly the head with a perforated steel grill I got from a local metal guy and the speaker baffle covered in a nice vintage cloth I found on fleebay. All it needs now are corners, straps, and feet - all on order. And it's getting retubed with JJ Tesla EL84s and either a pair of vintage Sylvania 12AU7s, or some Ei Gold 12AX7s depending on how it sounds after this "upgrade". (There's a kick ass tube OD pedal going in front of this so I may opt for the 12AU7s. Cool)
Image
Image

All in all it was a very satisfying project, but there are several things I'll do different next time. There was a lot of fabrication of small parts, like the jack plates, internal support brackets, etc, etc. It also helps to have a well equipped shop like the one I put together at the college I work at Wink:

Not quite a guitar that was probably expected to be seen here. We close on August 10th. It can't get here quick enough. Recommendations on small tube combo
by Stone on Wed Mar 23, 2005 2:07 am
OK guys. I'm looking for a high quality small tube 1x12 combo. Something between 40-60 watts would be perfect. Must be loud enough to gig clubs when I don't feel like lugging around my XXX head and cab. Oh yeah......it must be a gain monster, and have at least two channels. Three channels would be even better. Reverb not necessary, but an effects loop is. A 2x12 is out of the question.....so don't even bother recommending a 5150 combo. Laughing

Now the tricky part. I'd like to spend under $1000 if at all possible (used is fine).

Any suggestions??

guitar strings
by marker on Wed Mar 23, 2005 5:51 pm
Hey guys, finally got my vintage L500 pickup in from ebay. I was putting it in and I snapped my B string. Always my b string man! Anyways the only kind of strings I can get in town are Ernie ball slinkys and I hate those breakin' bastards. Back in the day, I used to use Hard Rockin Steels becuase dime did Smile and I never broke one, but they are extremly hard to find. Can anyone recommend a brand of strings that don't break and sound good?
What's up with my amp???
by The Metal Fraud on Wed Mar 23, 2005 5:55 pm
Alright there chaps

I played a gig a couple of weeks ago with a Black Sabbath tribute band I play with from time to time, and ever since my amp has been sounding a bit dodgy.

It is a Marshall 9000 power amp through a "Marshall" (perhaps homemade I suspect) cab, featuring 3 inputs - all 4 speakers (4 ohms) or left 2 and right 2 (both 8 ohms)

So I was running two cabs - had the correct ohmage set for both, but ever since then when I palm mute there is a terrible fart after the note. So I have tried various combinations of left or right, swapping sides of the amp (it is stereo) and so on, but no luck. What have I done to it?!?!?!

Cheers in advance
Volume knob all the way down but sound is still coming out.
by Powerglide350 on Wed Mar 23, 2005 8:41 pm
I've noticed this on a couple of my Deans. When I turn the Bridge pickup volume knob to zero there is still sound coming out of the amp. The Neck pickup will #$%@ all the way off.

What up wit dat?

there she is! i still have yet to hear it through my amp, since i still have to hook my amp back up... but i am guessing it should sound pretty sweet nonetheless.... I do have one small issue with it... on the back, there are a few of these scratchy swirl marks in the clear coat, and i was wondering, what is a good buffing compound that i could use to get those out? anyone?

at any rate... 280.00 well spent in my opinion

Bad stuff happens in 3's...
by Filthy Mess on Thu Mar 24, 2005 1:30 pm
Life's testing at times.

Tuesday - my car dies on me, resulting in large wads of cash I don't have. Worst of all it means I can no longer afford my Dean ML from Dave at B+T, the money just ain't there right now, especially with child #3 imminent.

Nevermind I thought, the clocks go forward this weekend, I'll get back out on my mountain bike and rip up the trails round my way.

Nope, some dirty m*therf*cker broke into my garage last night and stole all my bikes and my daughters bikes, along with bike parts and tools. Evil or Very Mad

What's next I wonder Question

It was said that the Schenker V would be ready for shipping in 60 days from october, thats around christmas.

Nothing happens, nothing happens, why the heck do DEAN give us a date and without any explanation delay it, and delay it?

If they had said June 2005 and it would arrive in may everyone would have been happy. But this behavior only irritates and make me VERY angry.

WHEN IS IT READY AND WHY IS IT DELAYED, PLEASE ANSWER!

Kittie
by slaytanic on Thu Mar 24, 2005 8:29 pm
I dont know if anyone knows or even cares but I thought I would post this, the all female metal band Kittie has lost 2 members of thier band once again, guitarist Lisa Marx and bass player Jennifer Arroyo. Reasons for the departure are pretty much because of the record label (Artemis Records) not supporting them on any touring, ect. Therefore the founding members of Kittie, Morgan and Mercedes Lander are believed to be looking for a new guitarist and bass player. Sorry guys they are probably wanting females, you never know. For example on the label not supporting them and how dedicated these girls are to the fans, Morgan (singer/guitarist) told me that they funded thier entire tour themselves with not a dime coming from Artemis. Now unable to pay the other 2 members, Jennifer and Lisa jumped ship with no bad blood left behind. Sad that things like this have to happen to good bands. Given they dont play solos and arent Dimebag (which they were close friends of his and attended his funeral) but are extremely talented at what they do play. Just thought I would spread this sad news.

Tech Advice...Rubber O Rings On An ABR Bridge?
by MrDave on Fri Mar 25, 2005 1:11 am
I just upgraded my Caddy's ABR Bridge to Graph Tech Saddles. The problem is when I removed the screws I had to pop out the pressure fitted washer that holds the screw inside. I tried replacing them with retaining washers and a number of other things that just didn't fit inside of the channels. I finally found some O-rings that do the job, but they're made of rubber.

Rubber absorbs vibration, effects tone and all that jazz. How big of an effect do you think having rubber O-rings will have on my bridge?

First of all I'm thinking about buying an older ml (79-81) and I was wondering if they made them in Korea back then. If so how can I tell if it is an american made becauuse that is what I want. Also you can tell the year of the model by the serial number. Right?

Endorsement question and MELIAH RAGE Info...
by Vekin on Fri Mar 25, 2005 7:39 am
This is a 2 part post 1) The Lead guitarist in my band is in another band called Meliah Rage. There first 3 albums were on Sony/Epic in the late 80s early 90s and they saw quite a bit of success at that time and are now working on a strong return and their 7th international release. I thought alot of you guys that are on the forum and into classic melodic thrash metal would really be into them and should check it out. They have always been one of my favorite metal bands! 2 songs from the last CD and one from the one before it are listed below as well as the Web page for the band site. ENJOY also see question below.

2) Ok now that you have hopefully checked out the band. In preperation for some up comeing dates in New England and on the East Coast with OverKill The band has been rehearsing in my basement studio in NH and as with anybody who comes to my house and plays guitar they get one of my Deans shoved into their hands to fire up. anyway long story longer... They have been rehearsing using my Dean Caddies as well as my DOA ML and Frickin Lovin 'em.
They were endorsed by Jackson for about 5 years back in the day and Tony, one of the guitar players has been talking with ESP about geting a custom Z for the dates in support of the soon to be released CD. Now they are both pumped about getting Deans and said to me hey I was on the Dean web site the other day checking things out... (first clue there hooked) anyway they are way into the guitars and I had told them all about DOA etc. I said sorry to sound like a salesman but I just love these guitars. I got a call tonight from the Tony and he asked me to find out what was up with possible endosresment deals of some sorts and getting onto the Dean artist page if they started playing Deans on tour. These guys still sell a lot of albums and are making a big try at a comeback and I think it would be great if they would put Meliah Rage proudly plays Dean Guitars on the up coming CD in Exchange for what, I do not know. I don't think they are expecting money or free guitars or anything more than maybe some cross promotion as well as ???? I don't know how does this work? Who do they talk to? Would a USA black Z with block inlays and fully bound have to be Custom built. The more the kids see a Dean in the hands of there favorite guitar player the more deans that get sold. These guys are a lot bigger than 1/2 the people on the artist page and are a very well respected metal band. Read the reviews on the web page. I think it would be a good time for Dean to join forces with these guys. Strike while the Iron is hot. Their Diggin' the Deans right now. Who needs to talk to who?

Velvet Revolver
by DizzyDean on Fri Mar 25, 2005 4:52 pm
Mrs Diz and I went and saw them last night and we were quite impressed. I really like thier CD and wanted to see if they could kick it live. I was expecting a "rough" sound to say the least. I've seen GnR 3 times and always less than impressed with thier live show. I have to say - these guys put on one of the tightest shows I've seen in a while.

I guess if you clean up your act and really work on the music, it shows. Couldn't help but think how they did a show the night before...and the night before that.....and the night before that...and so on - wicked World Tour sched. And yet - they can still come out and blow you away.

When they did "Fall To Pieces" - it was one of those R&R moments you'll always remember! Man did they sound great!!

If you get chance - go see em - you won't be disappointed. Slash and Wieland are worth the price of admision alone! Can't help but think they won't be around long before they burn out!

And one other thing - people are always looking for new band names. I gotta say that "Velvet Revolver" is one of the coolest I've ever heard!
Joe plays the Crocodile Hunter for a day
by DIMEBAG JOE on Fri Mar 25, 2005 5:31 pm
Tuesday morning started out like any other. Im sitting watching TV and someone knocks on my door. Its a guy from my neighborhood and he informs me that my lizard must have escaped. I told him that I don't own anything like that anymore. He says that then there is someones "Komodo Dragon" running through the field behind my house. Needless to say I ran out my backdoor to see what it was. I was expecting to see an iguana or something since they are common around here. Well, much to my surprise sure as hell there was a large Nile Monitor walking through the brush against my fence. Didn't really realize how big he was being in the bushes. I chased him up and down the fence a couple times until he stopped to turn around and I grabbed him by the neck and pressed him to the dirt. I wasn't going to lose this battle. I took him down to my work and put him in a huge dog kennel and took him to a nearby wildlife sanctuary the next day. They told me he will most likely end up at the Miami Metro Zoo. Talk about fun. He was at least 6 feet long.

I just got back 2 of my Boogies from repair. I should have used Mesa tubes. Instead I hear all this raving about Svetlana. They are s#%t! Too microphonic. Now I have to go to Guitar Center and buy a whole new rack of 12AX7s for my simul-class before I use it in a live situation. Never again will I stray from using Boogie tubes.

OK FIRST OFF THE GUITAR IS DESCENT BUT NO WHERE NEAR THE QUALITY THE DOA GUITAR IS OR WHAT I WAS EXPECTING. I WAS KIND OF DISAPPOINTED. I'M NOT GOING TO SAY WHAT DEALER SENT THIS TO MLATTACK BECAUSE THEY MAY HAVE NEVER OPENED THE CASE AND KNOWN IT WAS BROKEN. IM NOT TRYING TO SLAM ANYONE. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN THE PERSON TO BUY IT FROM A DEALER THEN ID BE UPSET BUT I BOUGHT IT 2 DAYS OLD FROM MLATTACK.

NOTICE THE V TAILPIECE ....THE GUITAR IS 5 DAYS OLD AND THE HARDWARE IS TARNISHED, THE TAILPIECE IS LIKE FLAT BLACK INSTEAD OF SHINEY AND THE V TAILPIECE IS CROOKED ON THE BODY. IT MAKES THE CROTCH LOOK OFF CENTERED. IS WIERD TO LOOK AT. PLUS THE CROTCH IS STILL SEMIT SOGGY. IT IS NOT AS MUCH OF A V AS IT SHOULD BE. IT IS WAY OFF COMPARED TO MY DOA ML BUT BETTER THAN MY BLACK ML. ALSO ANOTHER THING. MLATTACK ORDER IT WITH BLACK HARDWARE...... THE HARDWARE WAS CHANGED OUT BUT THE SCREWS THAT HOLD THE PLASTIC IN ARE STILL CHROME WHICH IS STUPID AND THE STRING FERRILS AND BRIDGE COUNTERSINKS WERE LEFT CHROME. HALF ASSED HARDWARE CHANGE IF YOU ASK ME. NOT DONE BY DEAN GUITARS BTW. ANYONE HAVE A SUGGESTION HOW TO FIX THE CASE. I THOUGHT ABOUT GOING TO HOME DEPOT OR WALMART TO GET A GOLD 2 INCH PHILIPS HEAD SCREW TO SHOVE IN THE SIDE OF THE CASE TO HOLD THE COMPARTMENT LID STRAIGHT. ANYONE WITH A BETTER IDEA ?

by Lon on Sat Mar 26, 2005 2:09 pm
Got both of these yesterday. Sold 3 guitars on ebay so it was time to shop! I was really close to getting a tiger eye Hardtail Select, but I'm waiting til summertime to order the color I want from B&T. The guitar is a Samick of some sort, haven't figured out what model yet, it's an older one. Setneck, Gotohs, Wilkinson trem, pretty blue quilt top, jumbo frets and the tightest grain rosewood board I've ever seen. I'm not a rosewood fan, but this one is very nice. Tone and sustain for days. The puppy I rescued from a white trash chick that used to work at Lowes with me (my part time job). I knew there was no way she could properly care for this dog and I finally talked her into giving her to me last night. Not sure of the breed, but she'll be 3 months tomorrow and is a cutie! Now my Samoyed has a playmate.
