Vendetta 2.0 Hardware.
by I M Evil on Fri Jul 01, 2005 11:54 am
I've had my Vendetta for a while now.
It still plays great(though I've got a little ding on the back Sad )
but now I've been thinking and I want to change the hardware,
from chrome to black Twisted Evil (it suits the Trans-Brazil finsih Smile )

So, anyone got any idea about which hardware(bridge / tuners)
the Vendetta 2.0 has ?

Well, after seeing the only razorback I liked (the slime bumblebee) as it actually is with the silver and LIGHT green, I just couldn't wait for another month or 3 days after the apocolypse, probably the latter, so I picked up an FBD yesterday

Friday's Funny - Short Marriage Quotes

Short Marriage Quotes
Married life is full of excitement and frustration:
* In the first year of marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens.
* In the second year, the woman speaks and the man listens.
* In the third year, they both speak and the neighbors listen.

It is true that love is blind but marriage is definitely an eye-opener.

Getting married is very much like going to the restaurant with friends. You order what you want, and when you see what the other fellow has, you wish you had ordered that.

It's true that all men are born free and equal, but some of them get married!

There was this man who muttered a few words in the church and found himself married. A year later he muttered something in his sleep and found himself divorced.

A happy marriage is a matter of giving and taking; the husband gives and the wife takes.

Son: How much does it cost to get married, Dad?
Father: I don't know son, I'm still paying for it.

Son: Is it true? Dad, I heard that in ancient China, a man doesn't know his wife until he marries.
Father: That happens everywhere, son, everywhere!
Browsing at Ed Roman's?????

I'll be in Las Vegas for several days in August.

Thinking about checking out Ed Roman's just to have a look at the Deans. Does he frown on browsing? Or is he cool about people coming in to just look around?

Pinky Problem
by californ90 on Fri Jul 01, 2005 10:55 pm
Okay, here's something I need some advice on. I have been having problems for quite a while now with my pinky on my fretting hand "locking" in position when fretting a note (applying pressure to the tip). What happens is when stretching across the fretboard to, say, the sixth string (so that your fingers are straighter instead of curled like they'd be closer to the first string), my pinky locks at the second joint back from the tip. The problem is, when doing chromatic runs across the fretboard from sixth to first, it doesn't want to unlock in a timely manner, causing me to screw up. I went to a specialist who convinced me I had a "trigger" problem in the knuckle joint- I had the trigger-release surgery, but it didn't help. Does anyone else have (or had) similar problems? It's driving me nuts because I'm having trouble progressing because of it.
Thanks!

Live 8
by CherryBurstV on Sat Jul 02, 2005 3:12 am
anyone heading to any of the Live 8 shows? I live about 2 hours west of Philly. They're expecting about a million people! They estimate fitting 400,000 poeple in from of the Art Museum Shocked I'm kinda excited about this. I'm not going, but it reminds me of the whole Live Aid thing. I was 14 and amazed. I wasn't around for the original woodstock and was long before the "new" woodstocks.

Here's the Philly schedule! They will have huge screens to watch video from around the world. http://www.live8.us/100.html

Pantera vs. damageplan
by 666boy666 on Sat Jul 02, 2005 7:54 pm
Am I alone in loving pantera's music and just not seeing the big deal with damageplan?

The music as a whole that is, dimebag wasn't as technically sound in damageplan as he was in pantera, and the vocals just sounded so fake IMHO.

Vinnie and Dime stayed the same really, but the other two just tried to play up the metal badass image too much IMHO,like, you've got facial hair and tattoos, we get it, you're tough, bla bla bla. The other two in damageplan besides vinnie and dime just seemed to be wannabe metal stars is all, kind of ruins it for me.

Anyone feel the same?

p.s. - although I do not like their music as a whole, I did love the intro to "pride"

Aged guitars
by 666boy666 on Sat Jul 02, 2005 10:43 pm
what's the deal with reproduction guitars aged or worn to look like the originals?

It's something I've never really been able to grasp. I mean, if someone said I'll sell you an original model-T, of course in it's present condition = dry-rotted tires/not an inch of metal without rust, if there's actually any of the old frame left/upholstery looks like shredded cheese/every insect in the world now calls it home..........for a very reasonable 40 times what it's actually worth, would you even give it a second thought?

Not meaning to offend any who've purchased said guitars, but I just don't get why you'd pay double the price for something that's half as good as it should be

Favorite Jazz Guitar player?

Who is your favorite Jazz guitar player? Or list your favorites.

I have been listening to Allan Holdsworth all morning and I just can not get enough of his style.

He played with Zakk Wylde on Derek Sherinian's "Mythology" and it is an amazing piece of Jazz-Rock Fusion... I wish they would have toured together.

report back on my trip
by j.arledge on Sun Jul 03, 2005 9:18 pm
well i just got back from Dallas, it was great. We went to guitar center and i got to play a first year model jem singed by steve vai, got to play a js 1000bp and finally got to play a mesa. Damn thing had a buch of button and like 12 channles, had switchable el84 and 6l6 output tubes and all this other stuff. Anyway it was kick a$$ i loved it, just too much fancy crap . I had the js1000 in my hand and had sat down witht he mesa, and was throwing out some steve vai and joe satriani licks, then played a few pantera riffs, i also had my dime shirt on, but anyways i was throwing down the good stuff, and a guy can over and handed my a demo cd and said they needed a lead guitarist. Holy crap i got an offer to be in a band. Anyways the guy was in a hurry and so when i got finished inside we went out and listened to the cd, the 2 songs on it are pretty cool. The only thing is i live like 230 miles away from dallas, so i couldn't be thier guitar player even if they wanted me to. If you are kick a$$ and in the dallas or fort worth area you should check them out.

this is thier site.

http://myspace.com/dieselband

After that i went to murphies music, they carry deans and thats what i wanted to play.

I played a hard tail select, the finish and quality were extermly nice, the pickups were a little weak. Had a larger style neck it played alright through.

I then saw an ml dime tribute, the cheapest one.
I grabed it and played for a while, i was suprised at how chuncky the neck was, and how thin the body was . I am more of a thinner neck player so i didn't like it too much. I didn't like the sticker either, it looked a little better in person than some of the pics i have seen.

Sadly he said that another order of dime o-flames wouldn't be in for a week and that he had already ordered 6 that can in and sold out instantly. He also said that he had ordered a dime-0-flame prototype and that it sold for 3 grand and the guy that bought it also bought 3 production model dime o flames. Anyways i talked to him awhile about dean and what he was ordering and stuff, he was a really nice guy, if you ever are in dallas swing by and check him out too.

So all in all the trip was a blast i played a zakk wylde buzz saw, i liked the raw neck, but it was a bit big like i said i like smaller high radius necks. For dean gutiars though the only thing i felt was bad about them was pickups, everything else was fine and high quality.

moral of the ebay story
by RobBouchardDeanml on Mon Jul 04, 2005 12:03 pm
well as you all might know My ml sold on ebay for 525.00.well its been 7 days and the guy has been telling me for a week oh i just got to check my paypal account cause i just changed banks and moved ill send it!!.i sent him payment reminders emails stating on the seventh day it would be relisted(which i saved of course)oh yeah ill send it paypal if i cant do that ill send it cashiers check he says!!like 5 days ago.so I dont like giving bad feedback so i send dude an email stating 7 days no payment means im gonna relist and i offered to not leave any feedback.I get a reply" oh im trying to get it togrther with my accounts ill contact you at a later time" Rolling Eyes Shocked Shocked I could have sold it in the paper faster than this!!ussually i would give more time but i need the money and i hate being lied to!!ebay says the allowed time for payment is 7 days!! the moral of the story is if you need a new amp dont sell your guitars to people on ebay with out requiering immediate payment!!!State in your auction requires immediate payment!! or you will be sitting around for the full 7 days wishing you had stated that!!waiting for payment and listning to "oh ill pay"before you can find another buyer!!Ebay says you have to wait till the 7th day to file!! Nuts and Pointy Headstocks
by frankencat on Mon Jul 04, 2005 8:09 pm
I love my Dean V but everytime I change strings on it I wonder about the angle of the strings over the nut. On mine, on the G and especially the B string it will come right out of the nut slot if you pick up on it even just a little bit though it has not come out while playing (yet). It also looks like the break angle over the nut could be better because the string really only touches the nut on the very front edge and this is the only thing that holds these strings in place. I always make sure the strings have plenty of wraps on them so they are would all the way to the bottom and still it looks like it really needs more angle on the headstock or maybe just a string tree or two to make it right. I don't see how locking tuners would work on this either since you wouldn't have enough wraps on the post to hold the string in the slot. I am contemplating making a "custom" nut that is a little higher than normal that will hold the strings in place better but I can't help thinking it is some kind of design flaw or something. At any rate, I love my V and am happy with the way it plays and sounds. It's just that I work on lots of guitars and know that the break angle of the string over the nut and bridge saddles has alot to do with tone and sustain and a bad break angle over the nut is not something you want to see on an angled headstock guitar. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Thanks Smile
new guitar and amp
by xb100 on Mon Jul 04, 2005 8:20 pm
Hey guys, was wondering if you could lead me in the right way for my new axe.

I've been looking around at all sorts of guitars but I've decided to stick with dean. This will be the first musical instrument I've bought with my own money, my 2 other basses were thanks to my mom.

Anyways I'm not familiar with guitars, I've played bass for 3 years, and I sometimes play on my friends guitars, it's cool cause i can go and shred on em just as bad as my friends do. But when my friends pick up my basses and play on em they sound like crap.

But thats besides the point, I looked into the vendeta 1.0 and really like it along with the ML Noir (the all black ML) I'm going to see if I can head to some music stores this week and try stuff out.

I play/listin to metal and rock, sabbath metallica, system of a down, and audioslave stuff to give you an idea of what I like.

I also dont want to go over 600$ total for a guitar and amp. I'd like to stick with a 212 combo somewhere around 120 watts. And if anyone has a suggestion for an amp I would appreciate it.

Thanks alot!!

Heya folks - Was wondering if someone could explain to me the how's and best way to pull these off. Is there a certain number of frets to tap from where the left hand is fetting? Or are there certain frets that are easier to nail just like doing regular open harmonics (12th being the easiest.)

My day off... guitar reviews ..
by DeanBELAIREguy on Wed Jul 06, 2005 4:43 pm
OK ..i had enough i really needed a break.. the burn out level was and sill is high after 8 months of 6 and 7 day..70 hr work weeks.. so i actally took a day off... no kids no schedule nothing to do around the house.. no cell phone.. it was bliss.... i went to a couple of guitar stores and played around all day.

went to the guitar gallery (local place dean dealer)

i heard they had 2 dime o flames.. well they had one and it was sold but i know the guy so he let me play it for a while ..

Impressions:

At first i really liked the guitar visually..it is real purdy.. and the over all finish quality is good. But over all i was DISSAPOINTED with the guitar itself. when i picked it up it had some sharp fret endsthere was a scratch on one of the pickup rings... bit the worst part was that I could never get a good sound out of it.. i tried a couple of amps and it just wasnt as hot as i thought it would be. it was a lot lighter that i expected not sure what is made of i just didnt like it as much as some of the vintage ml's that i have played.. it felt like i neede to turn the volume knob up

conclusion:

I'm glad i didnt fork out the money for one..

The second guitar i picked up was a cherry burst? set neck caddy

Impressions: i really liked this guitar it just sung.. the stock pick ups had really nice mix of high's and lows... very early les paul-ish.. the build quality was very good.. no visable flaws.. the sustain on this thing was great..

conclusion:

nice.. wouldnt pay what they wanted for it but i liked it enough to buy one used..

third i tried out a used? blue vendetta

Not bad i liked it over all .. the finish on these trans blue guitars a is beautiful..the soap bar p'ups had a nice tone not to my liking but had a real "blues"ey feel to them.. the neck was th best part of this guitar. i think i liked it best.. nice action smooth frets.. the guitar was a little on the light side for my tastes.. but if i changed out the p'ups for some bill lawrences or something i think i could love this guitar...

MY NEXT STOP wqs guitar center..

i looked around a lot before i played.. iwent into the quiet room and scoped out a few half stacks that i wanted to try...

the first guitar i grabbed was one i wanted to use for the half stacks it was the closest one.... ..it was a fender stage master or soemething like that.. it looked to be neck through double cut away with a trans cherry flame top and two seymore duncan humbuckers.. no pick guard. very cool looking fender.

Impressions:

I am not a "fender guy" i hate single coil p'ups and the whole strat look.. so strats were always out of the question. but i have to tell you this was not only the nicest fender i have played but probably one of the nicest guitars i have ever played. the duncans were hot.. the neck was nice and slim it had really nice smooth medium size frets like i like.. the tone of this guitar is what got me.. i had a really good range lows mids and highs.. the lows where really chunky.. and the mids and highs showed through enough to make it stand out.. it felt really balanced like my bel aire and felt good in my hands..i ended up playing it for about and hour. through three different half stacks.. ( a review of them is coming later) the price is right too around 800 i believe..

conclusion:
i am saving my peso's for one of these down the road.

The second guitar i layed was a tonewood les paul custom..

impressions: typical les paul.. like a baseball bat with strings lol... nice sound though.. they seem too short for me.. the small scale is weird for me..

the third guitar i played was a line 6 variaxe.

Impressions: a really cheap made guitar with cool electronics.. i hated it and its eectronics.. it would be good for a one man band performer playing on a cruise hip and that is it.

conclusion..
i wouldnt pay 100$ FOR IT..

the fourth was a used old school wasburn strat style with the head stock tha looks like a putter..

Impression: i only tried it because it had a really cool looking tremelo think looked like the terminator made it. who ever had this gitar obviously babied it and it was in really good shape it had the best set up and fret job i have ever seen the intonation was dead on and it stayed it tune no matter how much i whaled on the trem..i don t like the look of it it is ugly as hell but i had fun with it and the price is right..145$

conclusion:
if it is still there next month i may buy it for the trem..

the last and final guitar i picked up was a used ( if you want to call it that.. it still had stickers on it) jay turser semi hollow telecaster copy.

Impressions: I grabbed this guitar because it was close and
i wanted to see how the bose amp sounded . I have a couple of tursers so i may be biased. i played around on the bose system for a while then i ended up going back into the stack room and whaled on it for a while... now mind you i do not like single coils but this thing had a really cool old school punk sound to it..in fact if i didn't know any better i would think that it had a p-90 in it. i dont know why but it didnt have the feedback problems that i have seen with hollow bodies when you distort them. the neck was typical for a tele..the controls where nice and quiet the tuners sucked i had to tune it a couple of times.. but that is easilly fixed

I know a bunch of you have been asking for pics - so here they are....better late than never! I had to dress her up in preperation for a road trip - so I finally took some pics! The first is how I keep her on a regular daily basis - the stripped down look (which I much prefer). The second shot is her all decked out for the trip! I have a nice big leather backpack that slides onto the sissy bar!! Cape Cod - here we come!!!!

My ML-X Experiance
by xb100 on Thu Jul 07, 2005 8:52 pm
Well I have sort of a mini review here for an ML-X.

Went to my local dean dealer, was lookin around and saw an ML-X sitting on the rack waiting to be played on. So I go and pick her up sit down and plug into a line6 spider 212 and let er rip.

Now me being the awesome bassist I'am am totally lost, I just sit there and look at the cosmetics and set up before I make myself look like a loser.

Great black finish, strings were nice the nut was really good, and the frets wern't sharp on the ends, not to mention the neck was silky smooth and killer fast.

I start playing and I've got the volume on about 3 and have some metal setting on, and the tone is just awesome.

It felt really comfy playing while I saw sitting, not heavey at all, and I always imagined the ML's to be huge and bulky, but to me if felt just right. It's funny cause I remember reading that Dime was about 5'7 or so and he being really short it looked like the ML fit him well.

But I'm 6'3 so I reckon it might seem kind of small, but who cares it felt great and sounded great.

Seriously I thought it was an awesome guitar and plan on getting one or the Noir XT version. (I'd like the noir version a little better because of the floyd rose thingy and the all black hardware)

I also realize that if I do get this that I'm going to have to practice all the time just like I did when I got my bass.

The thing that I think is funny is that I've been playing bass for 3 years and I would of imagined getting a dean bass before I'd get a dean guitar.

But ah well bottom line they rock, BTW, the price tag was crazy it was 240$ When I saw that I about crapped myself, I'm def getting my ML from dave at B&T thats for sure.
Your first guitar????
by Jag Panzer on Thu Jul 07, 2005 10:34 pm
My very first was some horrible blue electric guitar I bought for $10 at a garage sale.

The pickup only worked for 2 strings and the neck was horribly warped. I took it to my first guitar lesson and the teacher said 'Nope. You need another guitar or I can't teach you'.

So I drained my savings account ($180) and bought a Breckenridge Les Paul copy. It was a horrible guitar, but somewhat playable. Back then it was tough to find a decent guitar for that price (unlike today).

I used the Breckenridge for 9 months until I saved for the big purchase - $400 for a Gibson SG.

The SG served me well until I played a flame ML. I ended up trading the SG in on the ML. The Ml was followed by several more Deans, Charvels, ESPs and Fenders before I came back to Dean.

amp fiasco
by xb100 on Fri Jul 08, 2005 1:49 am
Ok I hate to sound like a little noob, but I'm having trouble deciding on an amp. Some of you guys have read the thread i made about the ML-X I played today and might know my situation.

I'm getting a guitar (ML-X or Noir XT)

And I was thinking about getting the roland cube 60, but at the same time I think it would be cool to have maybe a 212 combo or a half stack (4x12 and a head) I can't make up my mind, I guess I have a bad case of GAS for just about everything.

I have done research on the roland cube 60 and it is awesome for the $ and it's really loud, but at the same time I wouldn't mind getting a peavey 5150 and a 4x12, but then again this will be my first guitar, would I need a 4x12 and a head not to mention a 5150 would be way over my head $$ wise. But I could look used Cool

Possibly, one thing I'm looking at is not make the same mistake I did with my bass. When I first got my bass I got a little 6.5'' speaker in a 10 watt amp, it was nice for practice by myself but when my friends came over I either turned the amp all the way up and distored it while not being heard, or told the guitarists to turn down which ended up making them sound like crap.

I'm gonna buy a really cheap bolt on, guitar center special and make good friends with my metronome as much as I can when I'm not working.....not sure how much time thats gonna amount to but we'll see. They say we're gonna work 12 on 12 off six or seven days a week so I'll be happy to get in 2 hours a day.

I know theres a couple guys here who have been there before so if you have any tips for desert life I would greatly appreciate them.

A complaint post, and the reply
:

Complaint:

Quote: A wake-up call from Luke's jets Jun. 23, 2005 12:00 AM

"Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m., a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over
Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early-bird special? Any response would be appreciated."

The reply is classic, and a testament to the professionalism and heroism of the folks in the armed services. The response:

Quote:
Regarding "A wake-up call from Luke's jets" (Letters, Thursday): On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt Jeremy Fresques.

Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day. At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend.

Based on the letter writer's recount of the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the president of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured. A four-ship flyby is a display of respect the Air Force pays to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, "Whom do we thank for the morning air show?" The 56th Fighter Wing will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

As many of my friends know... I have been experiencing some pretty serious mobility problems with my hands. Spending too much time at a computer has me shopping for devices and methods to help alleviate some of the pain and lack of mobility in my aging claws. 38 years of oxidation on this planet has taken its toll on my well beaten and abused body.... (easy now Adam!... I know what you are thinking! Laughing ) I would like to share some of the results of this painstaking research with my fellow DOA buddies... to help prevent the onset of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome and other debilitating disorders commonly associated with improper computer posture.

This is the mouse pad I have settled on. It shall be arriving at my house soon. Wish me luck.

in Rochester last night- the boys put on a great show. My wife and I were right on the stage edge and if I lifted my arm up I would have hit his pant leg. Awesome watching Joe play that close. Eric and Kenny put on an equally impressive effort with the rythym.
They started late- apparently had a vehicle breakdown and they showed up via town cars and someone that offered to tow their trailer. They had to do sound check with a club full of people, and Joe didn't look too pleased- but the crowd held it down for the most part through the check, and the show came off sounding great. No acoustic set either- Joe explained that his acoustic got broken recently during a flight.
Got to talk very briefly with the guys after the show to express our appreciation and support. They all signed a pickguard and a set list for us..... cool. Cool
If you haven't had the pleasure, no matter what you're into, I highly recommend seeing Joe. You won't be disappointed! Very Happy

Live bands that use mulitmedia question, and those ear things
by transblueZ on Mon Jul 11, 2005 8:53 am
It seems that quite a few pro bands when they play live have those little secret-service like ear pieces in while on stage. Are these used instead of monitors, or do they receive instructions or have a click track or backing track to play to? I know quite a few bands now have teleprompters so the lyrics can be displayed.

Also, how do they time the multimedia goodies? Is it someone that just has to know when to start the film/sound whatever? I'm watching the Rush in Rio dvd, and during Roll the Bones they have a mini movie that goes with the song, perfectly in synch. It has spoken word and some sounds. The whole earpiece listening to a scratch track would make sense to have these things timed in there properly. If the piece is started too early/late or if the band is playing the tune a little faster/slower (as happens quite a bit live) it would be pretty obvious to see the band play slowdown or catchup.

Curious about this as there are rumors of some prerecorded footage of Frank that will be superimposed during the Zappa Plays Zappa tour of Europe this fall.

Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Mad Mad Cool Cool Hey, I'm getting all pumped up about going to Ozzfest this year, Maiden and Sabbath are headlining.
I am a big Maiden fan, I know this dont have much to do with Dean guitars, even though they used to play them, they pretty much play strats now. Let me know what you all think of Maiden. Ive been a fan since about 82' when I was in High School . One of my all time fav bands!

Future Rockers!
by Faust on Tue Jul 12, 2005 9:50 am
My wife's best friend brought her little daughters to my house for a rockin' jam session in the kid's room. This little gal is only 7 years old.... the guitar is bigger than her. I tuned it to an open "D" so she could just WHALE on it... After an hour or so she really got the hang of the rhythm part of it... and a real ear for the tone. Here she is looking at the amp and giving me directions on her expectations of the tone... and how she liked it better "the other way"... Laughing We tried hundreds of combinations of gain and effects etc. until we hit the sweet spot. Then it was all rock'n'roll madness after that.

Image

Her 9 year old sister very rapidly got the hang of the drums... as well as the roles and responsibilities of a musical director... "No..I'll start.. then you come in when I hit this here..." Laughing

Image

You could not pry these two away from the instruments. One wants the guitar... the other wants the drums and neither wanted to trade. They just totally got into what they had. It's cool to see kids get into playing like that... especially when it is the first time they ever pick up a pair of sticks or an electric guitar... it's magic.

My and my bros' 1st customs
by Hort0n69 on Wed Jul 13, 2005 2:42 am
they arent deans but we were really excited to share our pics and stories with you....

first is my bro's esp f-50, it was a decent guitar, but it lacked. so he started stripping it down, and building it back up. 1st he cut the tone wire and took the pot out, then he cut the wires for the neck pickup, making it a dummy pickup. next he took out the input jack and drilled out the old hole that the tone pot came out of, and put the input jack in there. http://www.deanguitars.com/userpics/lib5/IM000001.JPG

Second is my axe, a squier strat, my first guitar. after seeing what my bro did to his guitar, i had to do something to one of mine. so i got to looking at old pics of evh's guitars. i didnt want another red white and black copy, but i do like his 1 pickup set up. So first i strippied down my geet and took the swicth, tone pots and the pickups out, http://www.deanguitars.com/userpics/lib5/IM000007.JPG
then got to hacking the pickguard up Twisted Evil http://www.deanguitars.com/userpics/lib5/IM000008.JPG
i used a box cutter type deal to cut the hole, i just scored it real deep, then used pliers to bend the extra around until it snapped at the line. Next i just sanded the hole down, and set the pickup in for a mock-up pic
http://www.deanguitars.com/userpics/lib5/IM000009.JPG
and it looked killer Twisted Evil i put the pickup covers back in uspide down for it. When i got back from band practice, i checked the fit and such then wired it back up, and put it back together (minus the tone pots and pickups and crap)
http://www.deanguitars.com/userpics/lib5/IM000016.JPG
it looks like the pickups are in still, but agian they are the pickup covers upside down. all i need now is a new pickguard without all the holes.

now to play ithttp://www.deanguitars.com/userpics/lib5/IM000014.JPG

all in all it was a good learning experience, and it was fun and i liked it. im a mechanical guy and i like working on cars, motorcyles, and bikes and stuff, but its kinda wierd but even though it was easy im thinking about taking up the custom guitar building/Luthier trade, i mean but it may be good in a few years when you have to be a scientist, not a mechanic, to work on cars Mad Confused ....

o well anyway i hope you enjoyed
Jerry Cantrell rocking a Schenker Dean V in Chicago photos
by rockconcertfotos.com on Wed Jul 13, 2005 3:01 am
Thought you all here may like to see a few of these.
I recently photographed Jerry and the Cardboard Vampyres for two nights this past weekend. Sunday night in Chicago at the House Of Blues Jerry rocked the hell out of this Schenker Dean V.
The band also consists of Eric Dover on vocals, and ex Cult guitarist Bily Duffy.
If you have not seen these guys I highly suggest you do so if they hit your area.
They basically come out and kick the crowds ass with a set full of killer classic tunes like:
Hole In The Sky ,Seek N Destroy,Helter Skelter,Ace Of Spades, Drawin The Line, Givin The Dog A Bone, Night Prowler, Would, Man In The Box and more. Killer show, and great to see Jerry out their kicking ass and having fun !
Enjoy the pics

Murphy's Law in full effect
by Splattergore on Wed Jul 13, 2005 3:06 am
Ok so after month's and month's of scraping I finally managed to save up $1200 for my very first non-POS amp. So I'm all figuring this weekend I'm gonna cruise to the 3 guitar shops around here and putz with some amps.

WRONG!! I get home after a long day of sitting on my butt and decide to get a nice drink of water. Much to my shock and horror this black sludge like liquid comes pouring out of the faucet followed by sputtering and then nothing. So I'm like "well this is cute" so I decide I'm going to go potty and tehn call my old man over and see what's wrong. Well I get to the toilet only to find that the water in the bowl is pitch black. It looked kind of cool clashing with my pink toilet but still disgusting as all hell.

So after about an hour of my pops and I futzing with the water system we come to the conclusion that my 50 year old pump decided to take a puke and my 50 year old water tank lost all it's pressure/water and decided to corrode out. Very cute so I figured as long as I'm replacing my water pump I might as well upgrade my water system to something more modern.

So I made a call and got a tally of prices for all the parts I need. So I've got $400 for a new tank + 450 for a new pump + $350 for various pipes and fittings = well I'll be damned $1200

Fate is such a bitch. So my question to you guys out there is this, how do you do it. I've seen guys with $5000 worth of equipment 2 kids a dog, and a Harley, and they work at McDonalds and live on thier own. I make 50K a year and have to scrounge for a $300 guitar. Is there some secret I'm not aware of? Or do some of you guys got second mortgages just to fuel your habbit??

Original CARNIVORE guitarist Keith Alexander (later of

a three-year stint with Dee Snider of TWISTED SISTER,
touring extensively throughout North America and
Scandinavia, with some audiences numbering over
20,000.

A body piercer since 1991, Keith had performed well
over 22,000 piercings and over 150 cuttings and
brandings. He also had extensive experience with play
piercings. Formerly a staff piercer for Gauntlet, Inc.
in New York City, Keith spent one year as a full-time
apprentice to master piercers Dan Kopka and Mark

Theyre careers went totally downhill after that happened. It was on 93.3 the bone (for you dallas folks) last night around 1:30 ish when we went on an anebriated adventure to quick trip for burritos.

its sorta like a movie theme song with a real uplifting vocal background and some acoustic strumming on the breaks

Saw WASP last night...
by ScottMexico on Fri Jul 15, 2005 2:31 pm
... in Hartford. Opening acts were Metal Church, LA Guns (without Tracii Guns, which doesn't seem right) and Stephen Pearcy (who played all old Ratt songs except one or two songs).
I was happy to see one of the guitar players from Metal Church playing a Dean V. At one point he broke a string, grabbed a Jackson for the rest of the song and switched back to his Dean during the next song. He was playing the song while his tech was replacing the string. I guess he really loves his Dean, too!
I had been reading about how WASP is notorious for playing short sets and sure enough, they only played for about 65 minutes.

Changing the Pickups in my HardTail...opinions?
by Six Degrees on Fri Jul 15, 2005 8:45 pm
Hey everyone-

I've been here for a while but haven't posted very often, but I'd appreciate your opinions on a decision that I have to make. I've had a Dean HardTail for a couple of years now, but I think I'd like to change the pickups to make the guitar a little bit more versatile.

Currently, the HardTail has a 59/JB combo. I was thinking about replacing both pickups with APH -1 Alnico II Pros from Seymour Duncan as well as having coil taps installed. Do you guys think this will help me get a nice, heavy rock sound but also be suitable for cleaner tones as well? Do you have any other suggestions? Any helpful opinions would be great! Thanks in advance.

by Barry on Sat Jul 16, 2005 9:08 am
Well--The last week and a half have been "weird"?? Thought i new it all about guitars--I have owned about every Brand under the sun over the last 30 Yrs--then i stumbled on to Dean. Its weird--i only bought a H/Tail Select--and i swear, its my BEST guitar! I now am gonna sell my Gibbson LP Classic-Studio--2 PRS"S--and maybe my Gibson ES-135--just because i only paid 700 bucks for it new.Maybe i am crazy---but i am either taking my proceeds and buying EVERY H/Tail Select--in color anyway--or at least get 1 more--Tiger Eye,my Test model is Trns Red--and buy a USA H/Tail,but i dont really see how they could improv on the Korean made guitar---I know its gotta be nicer, itsjust a testament to how well these axes look--play--sound. I am gonna also keep my 50th anniversary Strat--for investment reasons--and my Alvarez acoustic-----keep up the GREAT work Dean---your guitars,in my opinion--are the BEST!!!! Barry

Chick troubles
by \.../_METAL_\.../ on Sun Jul 17, 2005 8:32 am
Okay, I need your help guys. I'm 14 and bassically not popular, just a metalhead or outcast or whatever you want to call it. There are two chicks I like, but I can't decide which one to go for. They both have great personallities, and are hotter than hell. The one that goes to my school doesn't know I still like her, she knew a few months ago, but I don't think she still does. The other one doesn't go to my school, but doesn't know I like her, she plays bass, which is deffinately a plus, she is into rock and punk, she's an outcast and everythin like me and we have a lot in common. The other one(the one at my school) doesn't play an instrument, likes rap, rock, and country, she is more of a popular girl and I HATE almost all popular people and preps and what not. I know that when I go back to school and I see her there's no way I'll be able to stop thinkin about her and everything. The one that plays bass I only talk to on the phone and msn, we have never met but just from talking to her I know who she really is and when she gets back (from modeling in New York) we're going to hang out and go to the movies and be friends and everything. The thing is they both have their ups and downs and I'm REALLY shy and haven't been in any seriouse relationships before. Any tips, which one should I go for(putting aside the fact that one plays bass). Please be honest and help me out. Thanks in advance

and now that i have the cash it seems that they've all been eaten up.. So I found a 300w titan instead. I phoned the store and they said they had an order and the guy is gonna call me back (cuz it was discontinued)

if anyone finds a site or anywhere that has a warhead.. a link would be much appreciated. Btw i live in canada, so if i were a store, they would have to ship intl. The titan would be badass but you know....

New forum idea
by j.arledge on Mon Jul 18, 2005 3:06 am
i have seen were some of the older members have complained about a lot of off typic posts and other stuff. I enjoy some of the stuff posted and would like to keep some of that stuff around. on other forums i am a part of , there is an off topic or free form forum . I think it would be a an excellent addition, plus it would help keep the non dean traffic down in the general forum which could then be resereved for dean relavent things .

Anyways , i kind of wanted to see who all would agree that we could use an off topic/ misc. forum .
Alright Updated it...

Now keep in mind i've only been playing guitar for two years and i've never taken a lesson...IF ANYONE FLAMES ME I SWEAR TO GOD I'LL...cry and whimper until someone else gets flamed worse. This is the first time anyone besides my family and my cats have heard me play so use some astro glide and be gentle.

i hate Cut&Paste drummers, please critique...
by sepsis311 on Mon Jul 18, 2005 3:29 pm
Well I recorded my drummer this weekend. Anyway, here is my horror story, and if any of you drummers out there think i'm being to harsh, let me know...

Firstly, I wouldn't call myself a drummer, but I am somewhat expirienced. I wanted to start learning drums, so i'd practice at the studio I worked at, then eventually went out and bought a kit. Tama Rockstar Custom (fusion size). It's perfect for recording, big kick drum (18x22), smaller toms(10, 12, 14), and wooden snare(14). I always get wonderful recording sounds out of this kit, the small toms are punchy, have alot of attack, and when tuned lower, still deliver the goods. It's my expirience that larger toms sound like cardboard, and can ruin a mix.

So, my drummer is cool using my kit, since i have the heads tuned nicely, and all. His kit is a Pearl Export. He decided that my 14" floor tom isnt big enough, he wants to bring his 18 for "extra low end." Ughhh... I explained to him smaller toms sound better... blah blah blah. "Nah man, i want the extra low end." Fine, i let him use his floor tom.

Then, he says, "yo, before each song, can you a scratch guitar track for me so i have something to jam to?" I say, "Do i really have to hold your hand and walk you through each song? Don't you know the songs? I mean, you count your measures, right?" He replies, "well yea, but it's easier." I am against this for one reason, scratch guitar tracks are scratch tracks, and even though it will be to a metronome, the playing might be a little sloppy and you get the idea.

Then, in every song, he'd say, "well the verse feels normal, but the chorus seems a little fast." I explained that a metronome keeps time, and if he isnt with it, then it means he isnt keeping time.

Eventually he decides he doesnt like the metronome, and wants to play to just the guitar. His feelings "since the guitars are done to metronome, if i follow the guitars, it will be on time." Obviously, this isnt true, distorted guitars are going to be much harder to follow. But of course, I am willing to allow this, and waste more time, cause he wants to at least "try it." Of course it doesnt work...

Finally, he decides that he wont do any fills where i play a solo, that match up with the solo, cause that part feels too slow, and when he plays it on time with the metronome, he cant do it right. Funny, the rest of the song was ok, and i always told him he speeds that part up, but he didnt beleive me.

So, during the writting of one of our songs a few months ago, i said, yo learn this rythm, i want the kicks to follow, it doesnt sound like they do. He said, "dude it fits... just cause im not following every kick, that doesnt mean its not right." I said, "just cause your playing at the same tempo as me, it doesnt mean we're playing the same song." So he decided to ignore me. So we went to record this song, and hes playing to it, and stops. I say, whats wrong? He tells me, "i didnt know you were playing that. It doesnt sound right with what im doing." at this point, im so angry i say, "just play the damn song and take out the kick wherever it doesnt fit. I tried to explain this to you when we wrote it, but instead you said, "dude it fits"".

Wherever he @#%$@!!& up, he wanted me to cut and paste, and "just do it on new tracks." I tell him "no, a solid drummer should be able to play the song they wrote, at a steady tempo." Keep in mind, this is a metal band, no crazy fast playing either. 4 minute songs at max. Its groove beats, basicallyt like rock. Nothing fancy.

And the two songs i let him do without the metronome came out like crap.

bottom line...
Using his floor tom against my recommendation ruins the mix. It sounds like a damn cardboard box. His cut/paste attitude makes mixing a song a job. His "it fits" attitude ruined a song.

and shouldn't a solid drummer be able to play a beat at any tempo?

Please do pick apart everthing I wrote here. I am hoping that maybe i'm too picky or something, cause i do think i sound harsh. But i can't help but to feel right. So if someone disagree's, kindly let me know. HELP.

Sincierly,

A CAB RIDE;
Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away, but I had seen too many impoverished people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself.

So I walked to the door and knocked. "Just a minute", answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware. "Would you carry my bag out to the car?" she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing", I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated". "Oh, you're such a good boy", she said.
When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?" "It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly. "Oh, I don't mind," she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice". I looked in the rearview mirror. Her eyes were glistening. "I don't have any family left," she continued. "The doctor says I don't have very long." I quietly reached over and $hut off the meter. "What route would you like me to take?" I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now."

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. "How much do I owe you?" she asked, reaching into her purse. "Nothing," I said. "You have to make a living," she answered. "There are other passengers," I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. "You gave an old woman a little moment of joy," she said. "Thank you." I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door ($hut). It was the sound of the closing of a life. I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life. We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments, but great moments often catch us unaware--beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID, BUT, THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL........

Alice In Chains Tsunami Relief Concert

I'm aware that this happened quite a few months ago, but the boys from AiC got back together (minus rhythm guitar player and Layne) and did a show in Seattle for the Tsunami Benefit. Singers included singers from Damageplan, Puddle of Mudd, and Tool/A Perfect Circle. I heard that Maynard from Tool/APC did an amazing job imitating Layne and I would love to hear. Does anyone have an idea where I could find audio/video from this concert? If so, it would be HEAVILY appreciated.

I took a gamble and ordered the open box '79 ML that californ90 posted on the trading post forum(thanks for the heads up man!). Well, it arrived to my friends house a few days ago and I was very pleased. Not only had the guitar shown no signs of ever being played, it was in tune! That seems very suprising with it being 1: from a large internet company, and 2: open box at that. The setup is the best I've ever seen from one of these companies as I wasn't chomping at the bit to set it up my way.

It does have some work in store for it though. When I get back from deployment, those stock pups are promply being switched out. Not sure what for yet. If anyones got suggestions beyond a dimebucker or a BL I'd be interested in what you guys have tried and liked. I'm also probably gonna put black hardware on it too.

As far as I can tell the guitar is in perfect condition so I think this was a real sweet score. Here's the pics:

After the show I went back to talk to the lead guitar player and he looked at me and he was like "awesome shirt dude" it was pantera of course. Before Haste the Day went on, a band called Still Remains played and they had this kickass keyboard player, he was a lot like the guy from COB. Saw this little gizmo in a magazine this weekend, but can't seem to find it online.
It's a raised nut that fits over the existing nut, so you can quickly convert a regular guitar for slide use.
You have to raise the bridge as well, but that's easy to do.

Is that even necessary if you just want to play around with a slide? Could you just bow the neck a little and raise the bridge?

Got into a Fight with a Guitar Center Manager over Deans!
by Tom on Wed Jul 20, 2005 10:56 pm
First I would Like to say in wasn't a fist fight .
So here what happened a Guitar Center open near my house a Couple months ago . I thought hell I go and see if they had deans to shred on today. When I got there it was a pretty nice store .. but no Deans so I said fine I played a Couple Ibanez's and Jackson through a very hot Marshall amp. Anyway I decided to buy a Really cool looking heavy metal looking strap ( for my Dime-0-Flame that I will probble get next week) and I bought a Strap for my bro.
When I checked out "I said hey where is all the Dean,Brother" he replied we don't carry them then I said " you should there a fine instrument maybe you could replace some of those overpriced Gibson Les Paul" here's where it got ugly he said Deans Suck !
Then I said have you ever played one , then he said ya and they suck , then I said have you ever played one signed by Dean Z himself then he said Ya I played a washburn signed by him then I told him first off that Washburn is not a Dean and no where close to a USA made Dean then I told him I would rather have a $400.00 Deans than a $2000.00 Les Paul . Then he got all pissed off and made a comment Like I was on Drugs ( when I have been sober for 12 years). Luckly another person had already cashed me out because there was about to be hell when he said THE ONLY REASON PEOPLE PLAY DEANS IS BECAUSE DIMBAG PLAYED THEM AND HE WAS A HACK AND I'M GLAD HE IS DEAD. Luckly My brother grab me by the shoulder because I was about to punch this fat A$$ right in his head but all I said to him was that he very ignorant and I walk out . I'm still pretty pissed but I'm o.k I just want to know what you guys thought or if you had similiar experiences Evil or Very Mad

I'm doing some more research on finding the amp/tone I like. Yes, it's an on-going journey. I was wondering, what is a great clean amp (preferably cheap) that you could layer effects over? I've found a distortion pedal I like, surprisingly. Then I plan on buying some other effects to go along with it. Any suggestions?

Ever show ya'll my '83 Hamer Blitz in Blueburst?
"Clay"(says so on the trussrod cover) Rolling Eyes hides from me. I hate his Kahler and have dreams/nightmares of redoing the hole that would be left after removal with Mahogany and making it a wraparound tailpiece 251/2 scale guitar. I have his Black finished cousin that I have considered making a Clearcoated Mahogany beauty with a Flametop veneer added after filling it's Kahlerhole. Twisted Evil

Got to see Cheap Trick for the first time tonight FOR FREE!!! Thats right......A free concert to support Rusty Wallace's "Last Call". Stood in the rain (with a poncho) for an hour waiting for it to stop before the band would come out. They were on a tight time schedule, so they couldn't play their whole set. They still did 6 or 7 songs....Here's few pics.......

does anybody have a Roland Gr-33
by foxguitar on Sat Jul 23, 2005 12:54 am
Im interested in checking out a roland Gr-33 guitar synthesiser , do any of you cats have any experience with one , Ive checked it out it seems cool , are they any other synths out there better ?
second question , I know Dean dont make one ( BUMMER) , but the 2 S/A guitars Ive found with 13 pin is brian moore and Godin, Which of the 2 are better , I dont want to put the GK pickup on , it doent track as well and I dont want to drill into me axe,
Im looking for the guitar yo be decent in itself besides just for the synth.
any feedback would be cool.

WEIRD...
by deangrinder on Sat Jul 23, 2005 1:49 am
So I bought a new Boss CE-3 chorus to replace my old one....the hole where the screw goes was stripped out,so the battery compartment area cover was always sticking up,and made it hard to press on the pedal. So here is the weird part:
My old one sounds WAY better than the new one!!!!

Now check it out:the one I just got is made in Japan, and mine is a Taiwan version. Why does it sound better? So I swapped the pedal off the new one,and put it on mine.Works way better now.The Japan one had too much treble, and sounded to "hi-fi".They must have changed the circuit......anyways my point is,even the same EXACT type of pedal sounds different, depending when it was made!

pretty psyched about picking this one up - Jeff Loomis is an amazing guitarist
This is sad
by j.arledge on Sat Jul 23, 2005 3:52 am
i also got this in an e-mail, please do read.

Watch for Needles While Pumping Gas
Read this before your next gas fill-up. This world gets sicker everyday!
Folks:
Please take a couple minutes to read this warning about Gas Pumping
Handles. Warning: Look at the gas pump handle BEFORE you pump your gas.
Please read and forward to anyone you know who drives a car.

My name is Captain Abraham Sands of the Jacksonville, Florida, Police
Department. I have been asked by state and local authorities to write
this
email in order to get the word out to car drivers of a very dangerous
prank that is occurring in numerous states. Some person or persons have
been affixing hypodermic needles to the underside of gas pump handles!
These needles appear to be infected with HIV positive blood. In the
Jacksonville area alone, there have been 17 cases of people being stuck
by
these needles over the past five (5) months. We have verified reports of
at least 12 others in various states around the country. It is believed
that these may be copycat incidents due to someone reading about the
crimes or seeing them reported on television. At this point no one has
been arrested and catching the perpetrator(s) has become our top
priority.
Shockingly, of the 17 people who where stuck, 8 have tested HIV positive
and because of the nature of the disease, the others could test positive
in a couple years.

Evidently the consumers go to fill their car with gas, and when picking
up
the pump handle get stuck with the infected needle.
IT IS IMPERATIVE TO CAREFULLY CHECK THE HANDLE of the gas pump each time
you use one. LOOK AT EVERY SURFACE YOUR HAND MAY TOUCH, INCLUDING UNDER
THE HANDLE!

If you do find a needle affixed to one, immediately contact your local
police department so they can collect the evidence.

PLEASE HELP US BY MAINTAINING A VIGILANCE, AND BY FORWARDING THIS EMAIL
TO
ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO DRIVES. THE MORE PEOPLE WHO KNOW OF THIS, THE BETTER
PROTECTED WE CAN ALL BE. Rose Lambert, Chief Aide to Supervisor Gerry
Hyland, Mount Vernon District, 2511 Parkers Lane, Alexandria, VA 22306.

Summer NAMM show report

This is the second of five total NAMM shows I have been privileged to attend, the first being the summer NAMM in Nashville in 2002. The show has been a success for Elliott, Dean and the whole crew at Dean Guitars. I have some cool pics to post and a couple of really great new guitars. As usual, I am way too tired to edit these pics tonight. So I should have a report ready on Tuesday night. If you love the 79 Series Deans, wait until the see the new Black Gold V!

get more sweep from your Wah pdal.
by Cazz on Sun Jul 24, 2005 6:47 pm
heres an idea that i thought was pretty destructive at first, but makes complete sense now that i have done it.

i have three different Wah-Wah pedals, a Morley, and Ibanez wd 7, and a Dunlop Wah.

the thing they all have in common is that they all have a stopping part attached at the bottom of the pedal (the underside of the actuall pedal) which gives you a limited amount of compression you can apply to the pedal.

so i thought, i want more "Wah" out of them, so i took a hack saw blade and sawed the stopping part off, on the Dunlop and Morley they are rubber, and about 1 inch in length, so effectivly by cutting off the "stopper " part, i have gained an extra inch or so of pedal compression. and more " wah " sound.

and the results are difinitive, more wah can be obtained by sawing off the stopper part underneath the wah pedal... just an idea i thought i would share with you guys. Cool

heres my situation. due to problems with the land company in KY i lost my house. My girlfirend , our daughter, and i had no choice but to move down to florida to stay with her sister. Pretty much everything i own is in storage in ky (including my amps and several guitars (i brought my dean with me)). my old buick which ive poured my heart and soul into is also stranded in the bluegrass state. I had no way to get my tools down here, so i cant find a job turning wrenches which is about the only thing i can do and make decent money doing. therefore, i'm working shitty jobs, trying to get us a house or apartment which is taking way longer than i wouldve (weve been here about three weeks) liked and my girlfriend's sister has made it very clear we need to get out. getting an apartment means i have to get rid of my dog (she's a rottie) shes got a bum leg from me running over her with a car when she was a puppy(unintenional) so most likely she'll get put down in a shelter. so ive lost my home, gonna lose my dog and can't even really play guitar here. this blows.

Howdy all, figured I'd just tap the massive amounts of knowledge that read this forum to ask the following

Anyone ever seen a trans-silverburst finish? If so, can you post pics... doesn't matter what company. I was just kicking around ideas in my head for a fantasy custom guitar (that I'm hoarding funds for as we speak) and was wondering if it could be done well, or if it would look like crap.

A week ago, I order a Washburn Dime V. (I know, shame on me. Whatever)

Arrives at my dad's friend's house yesterday with no gig bag (which was included with the purchase). Dad's buddy tries to get it across the border so I could get my guitar today, but customs stops him because it has no bag (wtf).

So now I have to wait ANOTHER week for my axe. It throws off all my plans of effect trying this week... because I don't have my guitar to do it with.

Sorry, just needed to vent. I figured you guitarists would understand.
Ebay rant and vent.....
by kevphol on Mon Jul 25, 2005 7:23 pm
The nerve of some people....

So I bid on a nice guitar that's at a low price with no reserve near the end of the auction. (It's also local and the seller has already agreed to local pickup.) I put in my top price and I'm the high bidder. Then some jerk comes in and starts sniping at the last minute and manages to go above my price with only seconds left in the auction - so I lose. Well, I figure he just wanted it worse than me, right? The VERY NEXT DAY I'm browsing ebay and see an auction for a guitar that looks the same as the one I lost. Low and behold it is the same (has to be because it's a prototype anyway), but it is even the same pictures from the auction I lost (of course, because he couldn't even have the guitar in hand yet). His starting bid price is $200 more than what he just paid!

Then, to top it off, this guy emails me to tell me he just listed this guitar that I might be interested in! WHAT A JERK! Guess he thinks I won't realize it since he is selling under a different user name. So I responded in no uncertain terms that his price is too high and I really appreciate him sniping me on the first auction to begin with. Evil or Very Mad

OK, rant over, venting over...I feel better now.
Any "Cadillac" experts?? Need info on mine....
by GrayRocker62 on Mon Jul 25, 2005 7:52 pm
What model "Cadillac" came stock with "Push-Pull" tone knobs?

I just bought a used caddy at my local music store and here are the specs:

Trans Black w/ gold hardware (Rare???)
Grover tuners
zebra humbuckers
serial number: E807546 (Made in Korea)
Arched Top (looks like Flame Mapel Top)
*****AND push-pull tone knobs***

I didn't think any of the "Select" models came with push-pull knobs so if that is true, what model would this be?

Any info from the experts would be appreciated! Smile Thx

SUMMER NAMM PICS !!!!
by Brave Dave on Tue Jul 26, 2005 2:26 am
I intended to post all of these last night. In fact, I spent quite a while working on it and just before I finished, I clicked the wrong thing somewhere and lost all of it. I have now gone back to the tried and true method of opening the site twice...writing the text on one and loading the pics on the other. I do hope you all appreciate this (nyuk nyuk). Here we go........!!!

Here's the shot of the Black Gold V again. It is based on the 79 Series Deans with the obvious changes. Elliott tells me that and ML and a Z will also be available. I don't know how Dean manages to lean so far to the left without falling over.

Image

Here's an overall shot of the guitar. Really slick, huh?

Image

This shot shows off the flame pretty well. I tried to in vain to get a shot with no reflections. The Dean booth has more lights than an Olan Mills studio.

Image

Nothing like a matching headstock to accent a fine guitar. This V is hard to tell from a Time Capsule.

Image

The 12th fret bears the name of the series, just like the DOA guitars. These will be available in 120 days.

Image

Mick told me he had a surprise for this NAMM show and here it is! This is called the T-Wing. I think it should win the award for best use of the Dean logo. Again, ignore the reflections.

Image

Image

Good 'ol Evil D was on hand with "Mr. Spectacular", Michael Batio, who was busy checking out a Mach 7. Dean Guitars is packaging the Mach 7 in a beginner's pack with a poster and instruction booklet. Before you know it, there will be a bunch of 8th grade shredders running around your neighborhood.

Image

I swear Kerry King must be following me around. Everywhere I go, he's there. He and Batio are really trying to look like tough guys, but I later saw them checking out the accordion booths.

Image

Elliott and Dean, discussing the future of the company....or maybe where to get a good burrito.

Image

These Hardtail Standards were sure looking good, especially the Platinum and Gold models....simply amazing!

Image

Image

My son, Nathan just told me last week that he wanted a goldtop guitar. Now he can have one of the best!

Image

Tyler Zelinsky was given the opportunity to try his creative hand at the Dean booth this year. Evil D told him to do his best with the Dime guitars and Tyler did not disappoint. By Saturday, Tyler had earned the nickname "Evil T".

Image

The "Dean from Hell" on the wall is a Baby ML, which is featured in the Dimebag Darrell beginner's pack.

Since Mick Donner came to work at Dean Guitars, we have seen some really wild and exotic woods used. This is burled maple. Dean Z said it looks like a pizza but I think it looks more like the surface of the moon!

Image

Even though NAMM is a trade show, you can still pick a deal now and then. I got this crusty old ML for next to nothing. I plan to totally refinish it and add a couple of EMG pickups. What do you think?

Image

You never know what's going to happen with the zany, whacky DOA gang and this weekend was no different. We were all sitting around the lobby after dinner and Dean Z gets a call on the cell phone. Turns out Randall and his family were passing through Indianapolis on the way to Dayton, Ohio, and had seen us walking back to the hotel. He and Annette and the girls stopped by (at my insistance) and visited with us for a while. It's always great to see good friends....and it's nice when Randall stops by, too! (notice how straight his teeth are)

Image

On Saturday, I cruised around the show and happened upon this little jewel....Crate's new PowerBox. At 150 watts, this baby will drive a 4-12 cabinet and weighs only 6-1/2 lbs. One cool feature is that you turn your volume knob down and you get a clean sound..crank the volume up and you get a scorching distortion without ever touching the amp. I hate to think of all the times I lugged that heavy Marshall head around.

Image

Craig (tess) and his son made it out to the show (unlike Lon) and stopped for a pose with one of the convention center custodians.

Image

Dean is seen here meeting with a group of manufacturers. He was showing them how to apply the decals to the Dime-o-flage.

Image

"We want the funk...gotta have that funk!". Bootsy says "ahh"!!

Image

The whole trip was made worthwhile when I had the honor of meeting John Jorgenson. If you don't know who he is, then go back to Guitar 101. I first heard John when he played with the Desert Rose Band and later with the Hellecasters. He is nothing short of amazing and is one of the nicest guys you could ever want to meet.

Image

Well, there you go! Next year's summer NAMM show will be held in Austin, Texas....just a couple of hours away from Houston. We will be there for sure!!

as a few of you may have noticed, i have suggested using 1 meg control pots because they bleed nothing, no treble, you get the pickup's sound stright on.

Well i got my 1 meg pots in today, i just put one in my ibanez usrg30, in place for the standard 500k volume. Well, if you own the super distortion you know it is powerful, and high are a tiny bit less than the bass and mids. Not anymore, this thing screams now. You get a lot more treble presence, and i only did the volume pot. I left the 500k tone because it is a push pull and i sometimes need to split the coils for when i am doing jazz or blues.

For the tone pot snippers, like Ian, you may check into trying out 1 meg pots, or if you have a dark sound guitar and need more cut , the pots will help .

The only thing i messed up was a small ceramic resistor that was attached to 500k . I broke it, that may have made a slight difference in sound as well not having it now, but i would like to put it back on, it gave the volume a more gradual roll back now you go from about 10 to 2 with little to no change and then 1-2 what it should be and then off.

Over all it is pretty cool change.

Just played Dime Tribute ML and Dime-O-Flame
by Panties on Tue Jul 26, 2005 6:13 pm
Wow... those guitars are scorchin'! My old man took me out of town to a Dean Dealer today and the guitars are smokin'!

Both guitars played through a Line 6 Spider II.

First was the Tribute ML... that thing has some nasty tone and crunch right through the amp. I cranked it up and started jamming some Creeping Death and people from all over the store came to watch... it must have sounded damn good.

I was feeling real good and the guy asked me if I wanted to try the Flame... I almost piddled myself when he asked. So he goes to get it out of the display in front and he sets it all up for me...

First thing I did was %$#@! around with the Floyd. I've never played a floyd rose before, so I was just doing the Cemetary Gates harmonics with it. They sounded GREAT. Everyone looked at me like I was the greatest guitarist in the world... so I started jamming Cowboys from Hell to reassure them.

Those are some awesome guitars, but the price wasn't right.

They were asking 550 Canadian for the Tribute, and 1500 Canadian for the Flame... Sorry.

I'll stick to the dealers here. (not now, I have plans for my next guitar) Razz

I just figured you guys would like to hear another review on the guitars. They were fun to play and I was all excited to play my FIRST ML'S!!!

Time for some shameless self promotion Very Happy

Hey everyone, my band "Condemned Already" will be playing their first ever show on August 5th down here in good ol' Chesapeake, VA. Wish us luck as it is our very first performance as a band plus we open the show for a bill of 4 total bands counting us!

We're all pretty excited as can be expected but since we've never played a show together and only little Battle of The Bands kinda shows on our own I'm asking if you guys have any advice or anythign else for us between now and then. Thanks!

EMG's 81/85 question about pots
by Anonymous on Wed Jul 27, 2005 2:53 pm
Hi!
Can someone tell me whats the apropriate type of pots to use with these pups?
I have a used Slammer guitar that I bought flawless in second hand for $150 that has these beauties intalled but I suspect that the guy used "normal" pots instead of the apropriate ones for active circuits.
Laney Heads
by Splattergore on Wed Jul 27, 2005 3:46 pm
I was at my local guitar shop and the owner points me to this discontiued Laney Head. He's selling it for $650 with a Crate 2X10 cabinet. I tried it out and was generaly impressed. It had massive gain. I was actualy getting a snare to vibrate on the other end of the store. It's also got a built in noise gate which I found nice. I was just wondering if anybody here has had any experience with Laney and if this is a good head for the money.

OK All You Chick Band Fans.....
by BTMN on Wed Jul 27, 2005 11:33 pm
If you like The Donnas, The Runaways, Pop/Hard Rawk Hair bands you GOTTA find "Are You Man Enough" by Betty Blowtorch! Great stuff. Slutty cheesy power pop hard rawk at it's peak of tounge in cheek humor. Songs like "S h u t Up And F**k Shocked and Part Time Hooker Razz cut right to it! If your unsure after that, give "Size Queen" a spin with it's line "I'll let you know if your well hung.....Well if it's puny, dont waste my time. Shocked Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
Seriously, great fun and crunchy guitar rock all the way.

Story goes that the singer/bass player was killed in a New Orleans car crash while touring. End of band. This cd is from 2001 Find it. The drummer is now in a band in L.A. called Cheap Chick. Check them out too... www.cheapchick.com The bass player for them turned me on to Betty Blowtorch.
Line 6 Spider II Head
by Panties on Thu Jul 28, 2005 1:38 am
So I've played through these a few times, and I'm in love with em. For 400 bucks, I don't think you can do much better. This thing has a built in amp modeler and all kinds of sick effects.

The biggest thing about it is the "INSANE" setting. They're right... I plugged in a '79 Dean V with stock pickups and I was SHREDDING. This thing melted everyone's face off... I'm seriously thinking of getting one of these.

Think it would go nice with an Avatar 4x12 with Vintage 30's?

Got my evo 7 string
by j.arledge on Thu Jul 28, 2005 6:50 pm
well i got it about 30 minuets ago, i have to say i love it . The strings are a bit old and the neck could use some lemon oil, it is a little dry , but over all this is an excellent guitar.

I opened up the case and that damn thats a big neck, i love it though, i didn't think i would be able to get full speed shred out of it like i do my ibanez guitars but i can actually go faster. This thing is light too, i was amazed when i grabbed it out of the case. I though it would be heavier like a les paul, i was supprised to say the least.

this is a great guitar, pickups aren't too much to my liking but i bid knowing they more than likly wouldn't be . Still has better sound then i thought it would.

i'll post porn in a little bit .
Thinkin about buyin my first Dean
by mikeeb13 on Thu Jul 28, 2005 7:21 pm
Hey guys, I've got my eye on a 79 MLF at my local music shop. I played classic black one but what i really want is the Braziliaburst. I've got three strats and I just want something different, something not so...round!

Anyways, it plays like a dream Very Happy and I'm really considering ordering one, but i've got a few questions, and you guys probably know more than the dudes at the music shop. I've heard that the Floyd on it is really kinda crappy and gives out after so much use...is this true? Because part of the reason why i want a Floyd is for its tuning stability. And another question, if i decide to get an original Floyd later on..would it reqiure and body modification or changes? And my final question is about strap locks, i put Dunlops on all my guitars, and i wanted to know if screwing the one in on the neck joint would be a bad idea, because id hate to screw up something in an area like that...any help would be great..thanks guys!

Alright guys, I recently recieved my Dean Street Team package and I am going to a guitar shop today to try and convince them to get some deans, they are a fairly new family owned and run shop and I really think that if they had some badass guitars in there, that they would get more business. Please give me some advice on what to say to convince them, cause I think that I could get them some more business by introducing them to deans (plus I could get a free Street Team T-shirt Laughing ) Thanks.

Very bad news, my nephew who is our drummer was in a terrible accident. His chances are 50/50 right now. Severe head trama as well as severl compound fractures. He was thrown from the truck he was riding in when the driver sheared off a telephone pole. In a medically induced coma right now and has managed to survive seval surgeries for hemotomas in the brain. They won't even put his skull back together yet. Please for Christ's sake wear your friggin seat belts. The tradegy may ahve been avoided or not a serious if he had had his on. The driver walked away and the other passenger had only minor injuries. We always say it won't happen to us but it does.

It must suck being a boy scout
by j.arledge on Fri Jul 29, 2005 7:55 pm
well am sure you all heard about the 4 camp leaders getting killed because they where trying to pitch a tent under a powerline.

the next one i heard was, the scouts where waiting for president bush for like 3 hour and it was record heat , like in the 100s so they had problems with dehydration and all that good stuff.

next, i was flipping through the channles and stopped on cnn, there was a boy scout in Alaska that got malled by a bear, he lived only got his arm and leg messed up.

Now the most recent, a 13 year old scout and scout leader were struck by lightning , the leader is dead and the scout has critically injuring .

So if any of you have a son or younger brother in scouts watch out . Smile

Show in Ohio to catch if you can
by metalhead on Sat Jul 30, 2005 7:49 pm
All you guys in the Ohio area just wanted to let you know about a tour in your area all next week you might want to check out that features 2 Dean endorsers. It is the Acoustic Outcast Tour featuring Ron Keel (Steeler, Keel , Iron Horse) , Charlie Wayne ( Hawk , Bulletboys , King Kobra) , Terry Ilous (XYZ) , JK Northrup (XYZ , King Kobra) and Kelly Keeling ( Baton Rouge , Blue Murder, MSG , George Lynch , King Kobra) . This short tour started here in Nashville Thursday night with a live DVD taping and also featured Danny Vaughn (Waysted , Tyketto) joining them here only ( he’s also a Nashvillian) because of prior commitments next week. The show last about 3 hours and they all perform songs from their vast careers in different combinations during the show. It is all electric/acoustic set and is well worth seeing. Below are the dates in Ohio:

Saturday July 30 – Grove City @ Cadillac Jacks
Tuesday August 2 – Athens @ The Blue Gator
Wednesday August 3 - Delaware @ The Finish Line (added 8/1)
Thursday August 4 – Columbus @ Hot Spot Tavern
Friday August 5 – Lancaster @ Ole Roadhouse Saloon
Saturday August 6 – Dayton @ Soft Rock Café

I believe all the shows will be starting around 8 PM. Below is a link to the tour website and more dates will be added shortly. Also below is a link on the Ron Keel forum that Ron posted the set-list from the Nashville show. The only songs you won’t see done in Ohio are Danny Vaughn’s songs, but others have been added in their place. Please check out the show if you can and tell Ron and Charlie(who are both personal friends of mine) metalhead said Hi and let them know you’re a member of the Dean Forum!

Well I didn't come to Minneapolis to buy a Hamer or ANY Guitar for that matter. Shocked

Got a '92 Hamer Archtop Sunburst in kind of a Root Beer 'burst. It's got some player wear and the store put an Allparts Switchcraft jack in it for me to close the deal cause the old one wouldn't hold the cord in. It has had a Roland synth pickup on it too and SADLY the former holes were wood puttied without any other kind of work to make it pretty. Name stenciled on the case says Chucky so I guess that is this one's name. Came with Truss rod wrench, key, and lil plastic Hamer baggie in the case too. It has some pick wear on the neck pickup ring and some aroune the neck/body area there too. Few lil niucks to the finish on the neck and around the edges but suprisingly no belt buckle rash to speak of. Photos after I'm home in Florida. Not bad for $650, they wanted $700.

No real cool Deans seen so far but the had a Hollywood Black Z Bass and a Hollywood Metallic Red Baby Z. Both were fairly cheap.

...and bought this !!! This is a new Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe. They built this same bike in 1993, which is now a colletors items. It only came in black and white and everyone calls it a "moo glide". The chopper was just too much on long rides. The engine is solid mounted and the vibrations just wore me out. I decided to go with something a little more comfortable. Not to mention the insurance is 1/5 the cost of the chopper. Besides, I couldn't let Dizzy outdo me with his new Fatboy!!

I'm sure BLOODROOT will add some comments on how that pickup sticks out like a sore thumb... I ordered them with chrome housing like the original way Lawrences were made back in the 80s.

I love this sonic blue w/black p/guard Strat. Image
I am gonna shoot one of my white bodies in this blue, and throw on a really old and grungy single ply black p/guard with aged white pup covers and knobs. Mine will have a maple board, tho. But it looks like a relic with the amber tint and my fingerprints burned thru to the wood in lot's O' places! Twisted Evil Looks a bit like the one Joe Walsh played at the Crossroads Festival, now that I think about it. Cool I might even relicc the blue so that the white shows thru in places. Hmmm...

...from fleabay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7338919336&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

Total cost £54 ($96). Sound oK?

I know it's not a USA made collectors piece, but it's mine, and will be a good friend to my LP.

Just thought I'd share.

Ally.
