Prettiest guitar you've owned
by Lon on Thu Sep 01, 2005 3:29 pm
I've had lots of guitars, but this Yamaha Pacifica 302S was hands down the prettiest and sounded just as good. Yet another I regret selling. She was grimy, missing strings and sticker covered at my local pawn shop for over a year before they sold her to me for $100. No flame, no quilt, just gorgeous wood!

Question for Randall Rg100es owners?
by rgx612a on Fri Sep 02, 2005 3:03 am
Does this amp have alot of high end sizzle? or is it just me? there's this top end buzzy sizzle that I find very noticable when playing leads, I can dial it out with the presense all the way back, but then I'm losing alot of that cutting tone I like. It's not a big complaint though, just wondering if you guys have noticed this too.

BTW I'm looking for an overdrive or something to boost this amp into metal territory. What do you recommend? I'm thinking a boss sd-1 or something. Will I need an EQ too? I'm not nessesarily looking for the Dime tone, just a good tight, heavy sound.

First show - Need advice
by Panties on Fri Sep 02, 2005 4:33 pm
Alright, my band's first show is in a week. We'll be playing at my school's annual outdoor barbeque, and we're one of the bands entertaining. We'll be playing for maybe 1000 people aged 10-40, the median being teenagers, so we want to play stuff that they could get into.

I believe we get to play three songs. We're a metal band, as you most likely know.

The lineup is

Myself on guitar, rhythm and some lead.
Wally on guitar or bass, depends on the song
Jacob on lead guitar.
Shaun on drums.

So we could have three guitars for a song, just in case there are doubled leads, or we could go to the "Traditional" band setup and have the two guitars and a bass.

The songs we're thinking so far are:

Pantera - Domination
Metallica - Creeping Death

The only problem with Creeping Death is that neither Jacob or I know the solo perfectly, and he refuses to have it improvised. I'm going to keep trying to learn it, but if we can't, we can't play the song.

Can I get some suggestions on the last song or some changes? Thanks.

Yeah...I've been out of it for too long...I AM alive though, which is a good thing. I'll be getting a new computer soon, but unfortunately, I won't have internet for a little while, but that's ok. It's a step in the right direction.

In my latest news, I'M HAVING A BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, not me, personally, but my fiance, Jackie is. (And YES, it is mine). We go in next week for our first doctor's appointment. We're both pretty excited though. I think me, more than her, if that's possible.

In other news, I quit my job at McDonalds (quit as a manager), got hired at Blockbuster and got fired for being on time. I know...odd concept. I got there exactly at 10am, which was the time I was schedualed to be there, but they have a seriously @#%$@!!& up rule that you have to be there 5 minutes early (to ensure that I'm going to be there). At any rate, I'm looking for a new job, so...

Dean Bromberg Bass... please be very patient
by WoodMan on Sat Sep 03, 2005 6:28 pm
I waited a long time before I wrote this note, but something is not running Ok for people who want to buy a Dean instrument in Europe. More than 3 months ago I ordered a Dean Bromberg in a German shop. When it arrived I was impressed by the sound and the quality, but I noticed the bridge was not mounted correctly making it impossible to fine-tune the bass. After a long discussion with the shop I send the bass back to them and they confirmed something was wrong. They had to order new basses because their stock was empty... I contacted the store several times and they still (after 3 months) don`t have a clue when the basses will arrive. I wrote an e-mail to questions@deanguitars.com, no feedback. I contacted a different shop and they told me that there are stock issues in the US concerning the Bromberg bass. Apparently another bass I was looking for (Dean Rhapsody Fretless) is discontinued but is issued in the 2005 catalogue... I don`t know if other people experieced simular issues, but I`ve quite had it.

GOOD THOUGHTS & PRAYERS NEEDED
by Widowmaker on Sat Sep 03, 2005 8:59 pm
I got the call for mobilization yesterday. I'll be going to Naval Air Station Meridian, MS for at least a month. Fortunately, this is less than two hours from my home which, also fortunately, was spared any damage. Sadly some of my friends lost their homes but we are fine.

I will be working in the PAO(Public Affairs Office) during my mobilization. I understand that we are already providing shelter to nearly 1,000 people with many more on the way. My job will be to gather and disperse information for all onboard. It will be a difficult and stressful time for all, needless to say. I expect we will be working seven days a week for the entire month.

I am asking everyone to please send some good thoughts and prayers for my family and especially the thousands of homeless and hopeless. I am about to meet them face to face.

Who uses what in here and what are your opinions on them?

I use an Ibanez Smashbox. It's the only Ibanez product I've ever liked. Great tone, has a crappy void switch on it, but besides that, it gives you some CRUSHING tone and pretty good crunch to go along. I have my s#%t set up to where it sounds pretty close to Chimaira's Impossiblity of Reason album.
HOWEVER when the volume is down, like when I'm just playin around at home, i have to have the lows up high. When I play out with people I have to drop the lows down cuz it starts getting REAL muddy. Like 7 string muddy. Still a good pedal though for like 50 bucks.

by Elmonoloco on Sun Sep 04, 2005 10:18 pm
My sister (away for college at the moment) wants me to give her one of my guitars so she can learn to play. Note the word "give". Now, she doesn't seem to understand the emotional attachment I have to this guitar she wants (my first guitar I ever played). Is it at all wrong for me to say, "Hell no, you can't have one of my guitars!"? Basically this forum is something to show my sister, and to tell her to buy her own damn guitar.
POWERBALL REVIEW 2 WITH CLIPS
by BLOODROOT on Sun Sep 04, 2005 11:02 pm
OK. FIRST OFF, I MADE THIS CLIP TO SHOW THE SOUNDS OF THE POWERBALL. I DIDNT PLAY PARTS OF SONGS TO GET THE BEST PRODUCER OF THE YEAR AWARDS OR PLAY PARTS LIKE I WAS TRYING TO PUT OUT A CD. I JUST JAMMED SOME PARTS FOR PEOPLE TO HEAR. I WOULD SUGGEST TO GET THE EXACT SOUND I AM HEARING SET YOUR WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER EQ FLAT THIS WAY YOUR EQ DOESNT CHANGE THE ACTUAL SOUND THAT I RECORDED.

I MADE SOME MEGA GAIN CLIPS

SOME CLEAN CHANNEL CLIPS

AND SOME MEDIUM ACDC STYLE GAIN

GAIN CHANNEL = OVER TOP RIP YOUR FACE OFF GAIN. ID SAY THE SETTING I HAVE IT ON WORKS GREAT FOR LIVE PLAYING AND RECORDING TO SHOW THE AMP SOUND. MAYBE A BIT TOO MUCH LOWEND IF IT WERE TO BE A RECORDING FOR A CD THOUGH. DEFINATELY WOULD DIAL SOME LOWS OUT AND THE PUNCH CONTOUR(RESONANCE) DOWN ON THE AMP. IVE GOT THE CONTOUR JACKED ALL THE WAY UP TO ASSAULT MY SPEAKERS. HAHAHA

CRUNCH CHANNEL = REALLY CRUNCHY. EASY TO GET THAT ACDC SOUND

CLEAN CHANNEL = PROBABLY THE BEST TUBE CLEAN IVE HEARD FROM A HEAD. I PRESONALLY LIKE SOLID STATE CLEAN MORE BUT THIS CHANNEL ON THIS AMP IS QUICKLY CHANGING MY MIND.
ONE THING I DONT LIKE IS THAT THERE IS NOT A EFX BUTTON ON THE BOARD. YOU CANT TURN THE LOOP ON AND OFF FROM THE PEDAL. THAT SEEMS TO BE VERY IGNORANT IMHO. I LIKE THE LOOP ON THE MESA BETTER . YOU CAN DIAL THE LOOP TO ONLY WORK ON THE CHANNEL YOU WANT IT TO. THERE IS A KEWL BUTTON ON THIS PEDAL THOUGH THAT ENGAGES THE KEWL SOUND. THE PEDAL HAS IT LABELED AT REVERB BUT REALLY ISNT A REVERB. THERE ISNT A REVERB SETTING ON THE AMP. IT DOESNT HAVE AN ECHO OR THAT SRPING REVERB SOUND THAT I DESPISE. JUST ADDS FULLNESS AND THICKENS THE SOUND OF THE AMP. WORKS GREAT ON THE CRUNCH CHANNEL AND LEADS. GIVES IT A REALLY BROWN SOUND WHICHS BRINGS ME TO THE LEADS. I LOVE THIS AMP BUT HAVE STILL NOT DIALED A SOLO TONE YET ON IT THAT I LIKE OVER MY ADA MP-1. YOU CAN HEAR ON THIS CLIP ON THIS SOLO PART. NO MATTER WHAT I DID, IT SOUNDED SLOPPY AND LACKED SUSTAIN. MAYBE I JUST NEED TO GET USED TO THE BEAST YET. I DUNNO.

OVER ALL THE HEAD HAS TURNED OUT TO BE A KEEPER AND I LOVE IT . FOR THE MOST PART IT RIPPS, SOME STUFF LIKE PANTERA FOR EXAMPLE SOUNDS BETTER ON SOLID STATE BUT THIS AMP STILL CRUSHES MOST AMPS IVE HEARD. IT ALSO HAS A NOISE GATE THAT IS PRETTY GOOD. I DONT THINK IT WAS DESIGNED FOR THE METAL GUITARIST CAUSE IT STILL RELEASES TOO SOON AND DOESNT CUT OFF FAST ENOUGH. WORKS PERFECT ON CRUNCH CHANNEL BUT NOT ON THE MEGA GAIN CHANNEL. MOST PLAYERS WOULD BE SMART TO INVEST IN A GOOD NOISE GATE LIKE ISP DECIMATOR OR ROCKTRON HUSH. THE AMP IS BOUT AS NOISEY AS A PEAVEY XXX. BUT EASIEST AMP IVE EVER MIC'D . I JUST DIALED IT LIKE I DID AT REHEARSAL, SHOVED A MIC TO THE CENTER OF THE CONE AND RIPPED THESE CLIPS OFF. I CANT WAIT TO HEAR IT IN OUR P.A LIVE.

College=no free time
by j.arledge on Mon Sep 05, 2005 12:13 am
well i am senior this year and they offered college classes so you can get college credit and highschool credit that is weighted.

Man i have only been to english twice and have already gotten 4 large projects. First was easier, it was a 200 word "journal" entry. I also had a paper that was given for one of the books that i had to go through and find answers to. Next class, i have to wire a letter to someone and then send it to my teacher so she can read it and grade it. Everytime there is something wrong she sends it back and the grade goes down by one letter. Same class period, i am suppose to check out a book of letters and read 10 then write a 1 page report over the letters.

It is not that any of it hard, it is just time consuming. Oh and for goverment i have to read from page 3-66 and it is a full large text book.

I am really glad i am a looser with no social life, or agenda other than playing the guitar and school. Very Happy

well my dad is away working in Utah, and he finds this ibanez bass for 129 . He looks it up and finds that it is rare but not much else anyways i was hoping that maybe just maybe one of you guys could give me some info or input on.

It is an Ibanez axstar headless 4 string bass. From the online ad i found for them it is a 1986 model , but i didn't find anything about how many where made and if they where worth anything.

this one isn't mine but mine is the exact same color as this one, and i belive that same specs.

Can someone help me get a COA for my Hardtail?
by Rockingcanuck on Mon Sep 05, 2005 8:26 pm
Hi I bought #31 Faded Denim but it didn't come with the COA. Can one of you guys help me get one? I tried emailing DEAN Guitars but I get a "non deliverable " message. I tried from home and from work.

Also does anybody know about the Warranty? Is it transferable? I am the second owner plus I am in Canada. My beautifull HT Collector Edition needs repairs! Volume drops out (bridge p/u "on" and both p/u "on") I needs to tap on Tone control to get it back. Just in time too!! I was getting ready to bid on a Spalted (Ebay). This kind of soured me with Dean guitars. I still love my Ml 79, Hardtail Select and the CE but I will wait for repairs diagnostic before getting another one.
Thanks
Is it possible for different guitar strings to be louder?
by Bigdaddyroush on Mon Sep 05, 2005 9:18 pm
I just strung up a new set of strings that I haven't tried before (Everly 11-56) And it seems that they are waaayyy louder than any other ones I have used (GHS boomers, GHS Infinity Steels, Dean Markley blue Steels, Black Diamonds, Ernie Balls, etc...) Is this common? The lights on the compressor were going much higher too (limiting lights.) Anyone ever experienced this before?

Are You Man Enough.....
by BTMN on Thu Sep 08, 2005 1:52 am
A wild woman I know told me to share these with you guys just ta bug ya. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

WOMAN'S PERFECT BREAKFAST

She's sitting at the table with her gourmet coffee.
Her son is on the cover of the Wheaties box.
Her daughter is on the cover of Business Week.
Her boyfriend is on the cover of Playgirl.
And her husband is on the back of the milk carton.

WOMEN'S REVENGE

"Cash, check or charge?" I asked, after folding items the woman wished to purchase.
As she fumbled for her wallet I noticed a remote control for a television set in her purse.
"So, do you always carry your TV remote?" I asked.
"No," she replied, " but my husband refused to come shopping with me, and I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him legally."

UNDERSTANDING WOMEN
(A MAN'S PERSPECTIVE)

I know I'm not going to understand women.
I'll never understand how you can take boiling hot wax,
pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root,
and still be afraid of a spider.

MARRIAGE SEMINAR

While attending a Marriage Seminar dealing with communication,
Tom and his wife Grace listened to the instructor,
"It is essential that husbands and wives know each other's likes and dislikes."
He addressed the man, "Can you name your wife's favorite flower?"
Tom leaned over, touched his wife's arm gently and whispered, "It's Pillsbury, isn't it? Shocked Laughing

CIGARETTES AND TAMPONS

A man walks into a pharmacy and wanders up and down the aisles.
The sales girl notices him and asks him if she can help him.
He answers that he is looking for a box of tampons for his wife.
She directs him down the correct aisle. A few minutes later, he deposits a huge bag of cotton balls, and a ball of string on the counter. She says, confused, "Sir, I thought you were looking for some tampons for your wife? He answers, " You see, it's like this,
yesterday, I sent my wife to the store to get me a carton of
cigarettes, and she came back with a tin of tobacco and some rolling papers; cause it's sooo-ooo--oo-ooo much cheaper.
So, I figure if I have to roll my own .......... so does she.
( I figure this guy is the one on the milk carton! )

WIFE VS. HUSBAND

A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a
word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?"
"Yep," the wife replied, "in-laws."

W O R D S
A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day... 30,000 to a man's 15,000. The wife replied, "The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men..." The husband then turned to his wife and asked, "What?"

CREATION

A man said to his wife one day, "I don't know how you can be
so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time. " The wife responded, "Allow me to explain. God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me; God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you!

WHO DOES WHAT
A man and his wife were having an argument about who
should brew the coffee each morning.
The wife said, "You should do it, because you get up first,
and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee."
The husband said, " You are in charge of cooking around here and
you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee." Wife replies, "No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee." Husband replies, "I can't believe that, show me." So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says.........."HEBREWS"

The Silent Treatment
A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight.
Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, "Please wake me at 5:00 AM." He left it where he knew she would find it. The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AM and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn't wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, "It is 5:00 AM. Wake up."

all these new Hard Core, straight edge, metal core bands that come out and are shoving this vegetarian, veganism down your throat?
I find it kind of funny that these people are all "don't eat meat, meat is murder" and when you go and ask them who their influinces are they're like "Ozzy, Sabbath, Slayer, Alice Cooper" and all that. I guess they forgot that Ozzy was the one who bit the heads off of 2 fuzzy little animals. (Ok I know bats aren't really all that fuzzy or cute but still). I was at a show a year or so ago and the opening band was like "THIS ONE GOES OUT TO ALL THE HARDCORE AND VEGAN KIDS IN THE CROWD CUZ YOU GOTTA STAY STRONG AND NOT EAT MEAT AND......" I dunno how he finished that cuz I left to go sit outside and drink...
Yeah sorry for the rant. Metal music is getting really @#$%&$@.

THOSE GREEDY BOSTARDS - yeah - Eric Clapton and Cream
by RC99 on Fri Sep 09, 2005 1:09 am
OK guys. I saw Eric with Blind Faith in 69, also saw Peter Green practically smoke him in a jam at Steve Paul's Scene . Loved BOTH their playing ! Two poor guys - feel bad for them both for the pain they've been through.

But ERIC - COME ON !!

here you go :
for anyone who is wondering. For all the guys out there (most of their audience) who have stuck with music and guitar playing and struggling with bands, etc etc over the years ... maybe aren't making too much.. but would love to hear one of the original bands one more time.
well you can guys
tickets are
dum de dum dum
UPPER LEVEL BEHIND STAGE $ 350 - that's a months food
UPPER LEVEL ENDZONE $ 450 - new water heater
UPPER LEVEL SIDE STAGE $ 550 - czech EVO
LOWER LEVEL ENDZONE $ 795 - major car repair
LOWER LEVEL REAR CORNER $1,195 - some people's monthly
salary
PREMIUM LOWER LEVEL SIDE $1,495 - some people's CAR
REAR FLOOR (Sections 5-12) $1,595 WHAT!??

and ringside seats - so you can actually SEE Eric play :
for the INCREDIBLE bargain of :
PREMIUM FRONT FLOOR $3,095

those GREEDY BASSTARDS!!
I refuse to believe that Eric doesn't have enough pull that he could have made these cheaper.
PLUS - the ONLY American concerts are on MONDAY< TUESDAY< and WEDNESDAY nights. hey make it EASY on your old fans ERIC -

my daughter wanted to see Paul Simon a while back - it was gonna be $250 for the two of us - I thought - how much fockin money does this guy need. Now Eric is on that list.
Tom Petty actually refuses to play outdoor theaters where the lawn seats are more that $25 . I applaud that .. BRAVO Tom Petty - you put these other greedy bahstahds (that's Brit for fockin bastaard) to SHAMe.

Really, really disappointed in you Eric. Why not play 2 shows - one like this where ALL the money from the well heeled goes to New Orleans and Sri Lanka .. and Rwanda victims .. and another cheap one for your real fans .. not that I'm a fan ,,
used to be a long time ago .. but only listen casually since you've been phoning it in for years .

I would have paid $100, maybe $150 - but this is robbery. and we are not sure thses guys even HAVE chemistry anymore - I mean - Ginger and Jack HATE each other - and they're t he F'in RHYTHM section!!?? LOL

Eric - Jack and Ginger need money .. just GIVE THEM SOME .. don't make US all suffer because those two didn't know how to make $$$ playing commercial music!

to top it all off
you can ONLY get first run at tickets w an AMERICAN EXPRESS GOLD CARD!! open one for only $95!! hahahaha
how Bourgeois can you GET!!

ok - that's my rant

Funny - Eric's idol Robert Johnson played for pennies.
Now Eric wants us to go broke to see him play Crossroads one more time. Eric has made an "at the crossroads " choice here. He could have done a class act. Went for the dollar instead. Cream is not the only thing that rises to the top.

I'll go see Eric Johnson instead. He does the name proud.

Well guys I'm posting here to help my sanity. I got a call at noon today, informing me a really good friend was given 3 weeks (at best) to live.........ouch.......totally bummed me out for the rest of
the day. We went out to eat to try and get it off my mind. So I'm
trying to relax and my father calls 15 minutes ago to inform me that
my cousins husband was killed this morning on his Harley. A really great guy!!

I know that I can post here to help keep my sanity. It seems to help us all...........I think we are each others psychiatrists sometimes. I know that just posting makes me feel better.

Thickness of TC Caddy's
by jimlp on Fri Sep 09, 2005 5:47 pm
I was just talking to Dave at B&T about buying a TC Caddy but I am unsure about the body size/thickness. I was hoping the body thickness was similiar to something like a Gibson LP Special which is about the same thickness as a LP with no maple, the Czech/Korean Caddys I have seen have been thinner. If anyone can enlighten me I would appreciate it.

Somre recent CD purchases
by transblueZ on Fri Sep 09, 2005 7:37 pm
Frank Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol2
The Helsinki show with the Roxy Band. Great concert and chock full of Zappa classics and some amazing musicianship

Frank Zappa - Jazz From Hell
This one is a little on the difficult side to really describe. It's a release of Frank's Synclavier compositions. Pretty wild stuff, really amazing how this man wrote tunes and then led the way into the digital era with the Synclaviar.

Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Not as good as some of their previous releases. It's a little too alternative sounding, where their older stuff had more of a Floyd meets the Beatles flavor to it.

Black Sabbath - Seventh Star
Still need Eternal Idol to finish up the Black Sabbath studio album collection

Athiest - Elements reissue
I've had Unquestionable Presense on CD since it was released, but missed out on this one. Think late period Death and Cynic. Killer song writing and musicianship

Mercyful Fate - Melissa 25th anniversary release
Let's see, the original came out in 1983.....that doesn't quite fit the 25 years theory. Looks like it is RoadRunner's 25th year, so they are remastering, rereleasing and adding some goodies to their old catalogue. The songs were really remastered well and have a new breath of life to them. The DVD extra only has 3 songs - Doomed By The Living Dead, Black Funeral and Curse of the Pharaohs. Video is horrible, audible is decent.

Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw
Instrumental moody metal / hard rock. Not as heavy as their earlier releases, but kind of like easy listening metal. Makes great background music that doesn't over interfere with what ever you are doing.

Biomechanical - Empires Of The World
Holy crap! A cross between modern day thrash and complex riffing and time changes. With a singer that has some big range, lows (non death or gutteral kinda Phil-like) to Halford-esque screams. REally digging this one.

Parabellum - Stainless
Our very own Todd the Viking's band. I was pretty amazed on how well produced this release is. Has a killer sound and you can hear everything well. The songs are on the doomy side with some heavy vocals - tons of killer riffs and good tunes.

Dean Owners of America - Audible Portrait 2005
I'm impressed with all the players and their songs. Brian did a great job putting this together, and thank you Ja1010 for hosting the FTP site. Now, if only I could kill that damned drum machine on track 16 Laughing

Question for those with the RG100ES head
by MLattack on Fri Sep 09, 2005 8:57 pm
Hey guys my guitarist just bought the RG100ES head and it didn't come with a footswitch. When you turn it on does it go straight to the distortion channel or do you have to do that with a footswitch? If you have to use the fs is there any way you can make it go to the OD channel without the switch?

If you like early Sabbath and dig slow mellow trippy bloozy jams... Check out this band...
http://www.witchcrafthome.com/
I have one of their albums and if you took early Black Sabbath, mixed in a dash of early Santana, added a pinch of Led Zep and a sprinkle of Grand Funk, and baked it for 35 years in a kiln, this is the band that would result. The recording, even though it's on CD has a strange bass heavy vinyl-esque sound that I've never heard accurately recorded digitally. It's a time warp for sure! They'll be too slow for some of the guys on here I'm sure, but I guess some of the older guys might like it!

by slaytanic on Sat Sep 10, 2005 5:02 pm
Just wondering what size & brand the strings are that come on the Dimebag model guitars, FBD, DOF, ect. I was gonna change the strings on my FBD to D'Addario 46-9's thinking they were the same size. Not true. The low E string seems a hair bigger than a 46. Does anyone know what Im talking about?
Peter Frampton sound..

How do you get that Peter Frampton sound that he uses in Do You Feel Like We Do? the guy in Weezer also uses it in their song called Beverly Hills, on the solo.
Alright, another distortion thread.
by Anonymous on Sat Sep 10, 2005 9:06 pm
I was looking at the ProCo Rats, could anyone possibly tell me what the different between the Vintage, Rat 2, and Turbo Rat is? Also, I can't find any sound clips besides the low quality ones on the ProCo site.

I've kind of been sold on some of the sounds from that, so I've been doing a lot of research on those.

Any other suggestions beyond the Rat? I'm looking to start a stompbox collection.

I use a fair amount of distortion. The amount I use is comparible from Filter, some heavier, STP, to Deftones and some heavier distortion.

Thanks, I would have done more research, but I'm lazy and I leave for work in 5 minutes. Thanks.

250 to 500k using a resistor
by j.arledge on Sun Sep 11, 2005 7:00 am
Ok so, i have been thinkin about it and was wondering if anyone had played with it before.

The reason i ask is, i am going to be putting in a PAF pro for a friend and it will be going in a strat. I was a little concerned about the 250k killing the paf pro's tone, it has a bit of a high frequnice spike but i didn't know if the 250s would cut power.

ok so back to my question,it is a 250 k pot, i wire a 250k resistor between the two hot connections on the volume pot and that will make the pickup read a 500k pot or did i get the cumulative reduction current wrong?

I just filled the neck pup hole and removed the switch and knobs holes.
The guitar will be painted all white, all-black hardware ToM bridge and tailpiece as well as grovers will be installed. It will only have a volume pot w/ speed-knob.

For all you fellow Dime-freaks out there....there's a Randall RG200ES on ebay. As many of you may already know, this is the same pre-amp as the Century 200...it MAY have an RG power-amp, but that would be even better...I power my Century 200 w/ my RG100ES & it sounds MUCH better this way...the RG series have much more clean & raw power than anything else.

So, for all of you interested...Good Luck!!

I need some drum tracks to work some stuff up with. I have a drum machine but its a pain in the butt to program. The computer programs aren't much fun either. Anybody have a lead on any prerecorded drumtracks on CD? Ive seen some advertised here and there but don't want to pop and find out it's crap. Looking for hard rock/metal. If you have any experience with these could you recommend one? Im screwed without Adam on the drums.

I've dislocated my left wrist again. Happens alot. It's as big as my calf muscle right now, going to the doctor in a few hours. It happened in the early 80's. I was playing a Les Paul and the strap knob stripped out of the body, I was on the edge of a stage, 4' down to a concrete floor. As I fell trying to save the guitar(I DID!) I tucked the guitar under and fell on my left hand. It bent back to my forearm, shattering and making pointy bits outta my wrist. The doctor horked it all up. Shoulda sued 'em. Now, I reinjure the sumnabeetch frequently. But usually not this bad. Hehehe. Confused Feels like sombodee parked a fookin Buick on it! Mad Shocked

Tried out a Preavey XXX this weekend...
by TuscaloosaDumpling on Tue Sep 13, 2005 11:44 am
I don't post on here very often, but I value the majority of your opinions, so I was gonna ramble here a bit.

I've been thinking about getting a good tube amp for about 6 months now. Ironically, I got a Randall RG100SCG2 combo about 8 months ago. It was a massive step up from a 20 watt 10 year old crate and a few pedals. However, it doesn't have the tone that I really desire. I've heard so much about the XXX (and 5150/6505) that I really wanted to try them out. After searching a good deal, I found a local shop that carries the full Peavey line. I must say that the XXX is very impressive. They didn't have any 6505s in at the time, but should in a few weeks. But, I think the XXX would be slightly more versitle for my needs (metal/hard rock/rare cleans).

I guess where I'm at is at a cross roads of sort. I feel like that if I drop that kind of coin on a head and cab, it should be the final one I'll have to buy. Maybe as I grow older I will develop a different taste in music that doesn't require the over-the-top gain, but I really hope not. Cool Plus I'm getting married in like 7 months, so if I want some toys, maybe I should buy them now! LOL

I was just curious on some of the board's thoughts on the XXX, 6505, comparable alternatives, or maybe just equally random thoughts relating to one or more of the topics above. LOL

Thanks all.

Gibson vs. PRS
by BLOYD on Tue Sep 13, 2005 4:39 pm
http://www.prsguitars.com/news/stories/091205_victory.html

Appellate Court Awards Victory to Paul Reed Smith Guitars (PRS) Over Gibson

In a long-pending trademark dispute between PRS Guitars and Gibson Guitars Corp., the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit today reversed a lower court decision and ordered the dismissal of Gibson's suit against PRS. The decision also immediately vacates the injunction prohibiting the sale and production of PRS’s award winning Singlecut® Guitar. Paul Reed Smith Guitars announced today that it will immediately resume production of its Singlecut® guitars.

Paul Smith, the founder of PRS, stated “We are delighted that the appellate court affirmed what we and the industry have long known: the PRS Singlecuts® are musical instruments of the highest quality that would never be confused with a competitor’s product.”

In the litigation, Gibson alleged that concert goers in a smoky concert hall might not be able to differentiate a PRS Singlecut® from a Gibson Les Paul. The appellate court rejected that trademark theory out-of-hand, emphasizing Gibson’s concession in court arguments that “only an idiot” would confuse the two products at the point of sale.

William Coston, PRS lawyer, observed that the decision is a vindication of PRS’ meritorious defense of unfounded allegations: “We agree with the Court and Gibson’s own counsel that 'only an idiot' would be confused". Sadly, the injunction lasted too long and the court process was too long and costly, depriving consumers of the right to choose between the PRS Singlecut® and the Gibson Les Paul. We hope that Gibson will now compete in the marketplace and not use litigation to obtain unfair advantage.

Sad
by Mrs. JammerML on Wed Sep 14, 2005 2:23 am
So tonight Jammer told me that Hans left... that's sad. I read all the posts from both of the threads, and when I was done, he asked me what I thought. All I can think is how sad it is that everyone has to blow up the way they did.... Come on guys, When Jammer first showed me the forum, I thought about how cool it was to be able to get so tight with so many different people, and how neat it was to be able to be free with your thoughts (albiet tasteful). I asked a lot of silly questions, and everyone took me seriously, and helped me out. But what is the most sad of all is that everyone here is so quick to judge. People here getting judged by what country they are from? Okay, so we are all proud of where we are from, and we all have different gripes about the prices we pay... but upping a price, no matter how high or low it was to begin with, is disruptive. What does it matter who pays the most? I am sure we all have very strong feelings about all the political issues at hand, and since everyone is entitled to their own opinion, why fight over it? Agree to disagree. Fighting over who gave more money to Katrina victims? I know that I for one don't care who gave the most money, or who sent in five more troops than the other, what matters is that the people and the city got HELP. Because everyone pulled together to work towards a greater cause. So why the fighting?? And why the intense, flaming comments about others views? This board used to be fun to look at, and I got a lot of good info, as well as a lot of good laughs.... and now everyone is so d*mn angry that people feel they have to leave? And others are ridiculed and jabbed at? Come on guys, can't you just put it all behind and realize that in a way, everyone who posted to those threads bear some guilt? Either egging on the arguing, or purposefully being rude... So instead of continuing to act like this, and lose forum members, and p*ss off others, why not go back to being a truly welcoming, KICK ASS forum that you were when I first stopped by??

Bolt on Necks Have Gotten a Bad Rap

By Ed Roman

Many players assume that to build a good guitar it should have a glued on neck. I for one definitely do not believe that. Just because most companies charge extra for that option I think people just assume that it’s better because it usually costs more. I am going to attempt to dispel that myth. In fact I personally think that a normal set neck is the absolute worst way to construct an electric guitar!

It actually costs less to glue in a neck than to bolt one in correctly. Gluing up a neck is pretty basic. You apply glue inside the neck joint, slide the neck in and clamp it down. A bolt in neck requires a lot more work, there is no room for a sloppy fit like on a glue in neck. The cost of stainless bolts and press fittings are far higher than the cost of a little glue. The labor factor requires 4 holes drilled and countersunk. The tolerances are extremely tight on a good bolt on neck where the tolerances are far less important with the application of glue. If you make a mistake and drill incorrectly it’s time to throw away the body on a glued up neck there are no holes to drill and less chances of a mistake.

I know, I know it’s been done that way for 60 or 70 years! why change now? Why not keep our heads buried in the sand and continue thinking like we did in the 50’s & 60’s ?

Any luthier will tell you that the neck breakage occurs more on set neck guitars than all other guitars combined. The fact is I have repaired less than 15 bolt on necks in 32 years. I have repaired well over 2000 set necks and at any given time there are probably at least 6 of them broken in my shop.

First of all there is absolutely nothing wrong with a bolt on or bolt in neck as long as it’s done right. I must stress the part about it being done right !!!!!

The glue between the neck & body of a guitar will prevent 60% to 70% of high end tone transference. For example, try to get a funky nasal ducktone twang on a glued in neck guitar. It won’t happen.

Bolt on necks got their bad reputation during the 70’s when companies were making them with ill fitting or loose neck joints. A loose neck joint causes instability and detracts horribly from tone quality. A loose neck joint will also cause tremendous loss of sustain. Some companies in the 70’s were mass producing guitars as fast as they could and were simply not paying attention to the neck joint! The necks were not fitted correctly and in many cases the strings were actually hanging off the edge of the neck.

A lot of criticism is leveled at the 3 screw neck mounting plates of the era. Personally I like the concept of the tilting neck which of course is only available with a three bolt neckplate.

Thanks to modern machinery and woodworking techniques neck joints are a lot better & tighter today. We now know much more about guitar construction than we used to. Guitars in general are a lot better today, even the Mexican ones are better than some of those USA guitars from the 90’s. A tight neckjoint equals a good guitar !!!

The neckjoint is the heart of the guitar, If the neckjoint is set up properly the guitar WILL always sound better.

In my shop we make it a rule to mount each neck so tightly that it’s almost a force fit. The technician should be able to physically pick up the guitar by the neck so that the body is suspended. The pressure and the fit alone should be enough to hold the body to the neck.

My sure fire test is to take a thin guitar pick and try to slide it between the neck and the body. If I can get the pick into the crack then I know the guitar will be lacking in tone & sustain.

Synopsis

Bolt On Vs. Bolt In

Both ways work very well as long as you get a tight neck fit. The bolt in like the Quicksilver is superior because there is no protruding flange to bolt the neck onto. The neck actually bolts in through the back of the guitar. Consequently you get better stability, even more tone & sustain and as an added bonus you can reach higher up the neck. More notes, more better sounding notes !!!!

The Quicksilver goes one better, The Quicksilver actually incorporates the rhythm or neck pickup right into the neck joint. To my knowledge no other company affixes one pickup directly to the tongue of the neck and the other one directly to the body. We have been doing this modification to PRS guitars for more than 10 years. It really works well on a PRS the difference is noticeable even for a novice player. The modification is completely invisible and you cannot tell it has been done except by listening to it. We do it to set neck models and to Bolt In models. Personally I think it works best on a Bolt In Model but even a novice can easily hear the difference on a set neck version of a PRS.

Question

Why Are Bolts Better Than Glue ?

1, Because you can get them much tighter than glue.

2. Tightness means you get direct wood to wood contact with no glue to dampen tone transference.

3, The tight fit means much greater neck stability.

4, Bolts allow for adjustability.

5, Easier and much cheaper to repair if a problem occurs.

When is glue better than bolts ?

1. Glue is better because it's much cheaper to do. Tolerances don't have to be exact. You can simply slather in a wad of glue, and squeeze the neck into the gooey glop of tone dampening glue. Clamp it down tight and presto! now you have still another

Anyone selling a tele body?
by mpire on Wed Sep 14, 2005 5:20 pm
I have a spare duckbill neck and today I've come to the conclusion that it really needs a telecaster style body to go with.

The neck is 25.5" scale so pretty much any fender pocket spec should fit as far as I can tell.

Prefer something solid wood on the cheaper end of the spectrum..

Do guitarists prefer acoustic or electric, & why/why not
by pink_pantera on Wed Sep 14, 2005 8:30 pm
I play classical guitar. I'm a singer, keyboardist, percussionist, woodwind, & strings aficionada. I've tried the electric guitar, but are there and or is there different techniques on approaching/mastering the electric guitar? I kind of get bored with the treble clef, only. Singing, on the other hand, I NEVER get tired of. What kind of pedagogy is possible for a classical-guitarist to apply to the electric ~HEAVY-***METAL***~ guitar? Thanks. Cool

Day Six And Counting
by jim6 on Wed Sep 14, 2005 11:06 pm
Tomorrow is Day Seven of the "Jim Goes Cold Turkey" Project.

From a pack of smokes a day for fifteen or so years to nothing.

I'm fine. Really.

The temper is just a little short, but nothing worse than usual. If it's edible, it's fair game. Cooked or not. I've drank enough water to bloat like a whale and make my molars float. I can notice the improved breathing already.

It's not the physical addiction nearly as much as breaking the overall habit of it. Oh, the withdrawal is there, though. Walked around light headed as hell last Friday.

If any of you folks feel like blowing off some Forum Aggression, send it my way. I'll take the distraction and vent some of my own in the process.

Guitar Collection Websites.....
by Lurker on Thu Sep 15, 2005 2:46 pm
Well....I understand that Jay (ba the Hutt) is a busy man....so I need to find a new site where I can proudly display my guitar collection. I used to have the "pointy" site link in my email signature for all my virtual buddies to check out, but it is so outdated that I just removed it all-together. Sad

This is the only other cool alternative I've run across so far: http://www.collectguitars.com/index.php
Any of you cats have your axes hanging there? Or anywhere else?

Unfortunately, I don't forsee adding to my collection anytime soon.... Crying or Very sad but it'ld be cool to have an organized/centralized thing like that again. It would also be very cool for all of *us* to have a place to put up our collections and then be able to include the link our forum signatures! That way, anybody at anytime could scope your stuff without having to fish through threads and beg for pics!! Wink I honestly mean no offence to Jay in any shape, form or fashion!! I loved the pointyguitars site--hell, I have two shirts and gave away a ton of stickers to help promote the place while feeding my own ego!! Embarassed Laughing I wish I had bought it when I had the chance... Crying or Very sad ...but I bought an ML-Select instead!!! Twisted Evil

So, in closing...(haha)...anybody have any suggestions or thoughts on linking to *our collections* in our sig's?? Cool

Dime Story (kind of)
by Jeepman on Sat Sep 17, 2005 8:19 am
First off,I have to say that I'd never met Darrell in person, but,as it turned out, that was my fault. My best friend in the world is Mike Wengren, who just happens to be the drummer for Disturbed. We've been best friends for close to 20 years now. Anyway, acouple years ago I got a phone call from Mike about going on a fishing trip on Lake Michigan with Dime and Vinnie. I guess they were renting a boat for the day,but being that I'm a carpenter and we were going up that day(meaning we were building the second story walls and roof structure)I couldn't take the day off. That was my chance to meet the brothers. Anyway, long story cut in half,I asked Mike to get me autographs instead. What I got was very cool. I got an autographed business card from their stripclub from Vinnie, and from Dime I got a handful of his picks. Actually have them locked up in my safe. Jumping forward,I got an early morning phone call on Dec. 8th,telling me that Dime was killed. It hadn't even hit the news yet. We sat on the phone for hours, just talking about Dime. Terrible day. Well,Mike ended up going to the wake and funeral, and the next time I saw him he gave me the funeral pamphlet, which is also in my safe. Anyway, there is no real point to this story, other than the fact that I kick myself in the a** for not taking the day off. But,then again, who would've figured, right?!
This oughtta be good

I'm coming into some money in about 3-4 weeks and will be looking for a new guitar and amp. I'll have $1000 total, and really want a good amp so I'm trying to keep the guitar at or under $500. In your esteemed opinion, what's the best Dean I can get for that, new or used? NO pointy guitars, except maybe a V or Z select. You guys know I like Strat and LP shaped guitars so the EVO and import Hardtail lines are right up my alley. OK let 'er rip! What's the best $500 Dean out there for me???

I was informed late yesterday afternoon that my nephew, who you may remember was also our drummer passed away. This was the result of an automoblie accident, sorta. He has been on life support for a month but was brain dead. It seems the driver wrecked the truck on purpose, she is now facing a homicide charge. Adam was friend, family, and a very talented young man. I miss him terribly. Please all of you wear your seat belts you never know when you may really need them. The world is a little darker now, we miss his light.

My local music store now sells Dean!

Right now they only have a playmate, baby V and an evo Dragster and supposedly they can only get the lower tier stuff in atm.
How does that process work, is it scaled up by volume or is there a way to put in a good word for them?

Help
by Hrafn on Sat Sep 17, 2005 10:23 pm
Ok...I don't know if anyone here will care at all, but I need help.

Well to start things off...I used to be depressed, to the point where'd I'd scar my arms and try to kill myself.

Well about 4 months ago I got the internet back after a year...and found a friend I thought I'd lost forever...and we started to fall in love. (Please don't lecture me on this, no she isn't a pedo, no she IS who she says she is, I really do know her, have done for 3 years.)

Well eventually we fell in love and began going out.

Yes...long distance relationships don't work right? Well I don't need to hear that...no offense guys but right now I don't.

Well, I find out that she's actually bisexual and been having grox with her friend for about 6 months now.

Well her friend would kill herself if she didn't get physical love, and my girlfriend was feeling like a frigging tool...feeling used and depressed.

Now I left this problem up to her, since I didn't consider it cheating as she had no choice, but I didn't want to force her to stop...I wanted her to be free to choose.

I've been slowly getting depressed again, since I'm 16 and never had a girlfriend (I feel no shame in admitting this), I don't know why, I'm not ugly, I don't stink, I'm not THAT fat...(maybe 15 pounds over weight) but no girl has ever liked me. None. Ever.

So I start talking to her, and she says she'll wait for me...she wants me to go out with this girl I'm attracted to. This girl who talks to me, who seems to actually like me.

Well, I find out tonight she reeeeeallly likes my best friend, who's the nicest guy EVER, and he has no feelings for her.

I also find out she would never, EVER touch me. Ever.

So I feel bad right?

It get's worse.

I find out my girlfriend has started having grox again. This time by choice. She doesn't feel bad anymore.

And now I feel like suicide. I really do.

And so for some reason, I come to you guys. Why...I don't know.
Maybe it helps to type I don't know.
What are you doing now?

Here's the deal guys, I go to a catholic school and I need to get 5 hours of community service in this semester. I thought it would be a great idea to play guitar at the masses every Wednesday. Each mass counts as one hour. The bad news is I'll probably be the only one playing and I am scarred of messing up in front of all those people. I have the music(3 songs) that I'm supposed to play at the mass this Wednesday, but there are missing pages, it's not in the format I will be playing it in, and I don't know how to play all the non-basic chords. I really needs some ideas, should I just tell them I won't be able to do it this time around, because my guitar broke? How can I learn all those complicated chords and how can I learn to write my own songs? Also I can't sing very well, but I want to learn how, are there any good online singing lessons that are free? Thanks in advance.

German Thrash metal weekend! SODOM/TANKARD/VENDETTA
by spacebeer on Sun Sep 18, 2005 3:13 pm
OK guys! I saw frippin Sodom! we left friday morning, drove 410 km's to Hannover. We booked a hotel there so we checked in and we left to search the venue. luckily we found it pretty soon, it was an old factory but it was pretty quiet still 18:00 though....we even asked a lady if Sodom was really playing but she confrmed.

Anyway we looked for a nice restaurant close to the venue and found a nice greek restaurant, but first we encountered this!

Image

SO after the meal we went to the hall, and there were quite some people waiting outside already most had brought thier own beer LOL! we could get in at 19:30 so first thing we did was check out the merchandise and we bought some shirts. Then we had a nice german beer in a comfortable sofa in the bar at Faust.

Image

The First band started pretty soon they were called WINTERDOME, but they were boring as %$#@!, some kinda gothic/folk metal I didn't like it one bit! After them FATAL EMBRACE played and the hall started to fill up a little, they were pretty cool old school thrash metal but the sound from the PA was not too good....and in the end they just lacked the songs Sodom has.

ANyway the Faust was a prett big club with a capacity of about 1,000 people, it wasn;t a sellout but at the time VENDETTA took the stage it was pretty crowded, I think about 750-800 people inside! VENDETTA was ultra cool, I only knew their old recordings from the 80's "brain damage" and "go and live...stay and die" they were tight and played killer old school german technical thrash, their bassplayer was very very skilled! They introduced some new songs which are promising for the new album, I just hope they'll find a record label to release it. The PA sound had gotten pretty decent by now BTW!

Image

Image

Image

BUT NOW! it was time for the masters of German thrash themselves, it was crowded, and sweaty hot in the club! they people started to chant "SODOM, SODOM!!" killer! The sounds was crystal clear and I have to say I never saw such a good SODOM show when they started out with "among the weirdkong" from the "M-16" album a huge moshpit was created which lasted for the full 70-minute set!!!!! and an intense moshpit it was....I was soaked after just 5 minutes LOL!

Now they do not only have the best songs in German thrash but they are shure as hell not the messy, sloppy bunch anymore they used to be in the past, they are SERIOUS competition for DESTRUCTION and KREATOR in this form on the live front! Bobby was tight as hell and he has grown tremendously as a drummer after 10 years with SODOM, Bernamann as very good too, banging constantly, and TOm.....well he's Tom shure one of THrash Metal's most iconic frontmen!

Second song was "The Vice Of Kiling" after that I lost it a bit in the pit but they played these songs: "outbreak of evil", "blasphemer", "witching metal", "sodomized", "Aber Bitte Mit Sahne", "Der Wachtturm", "Die Stumme Ursel", "Sodomy & Lust", "The Saw Is The Law", "Napalm In THe Morning", "Stalinorgel", "Bombenhagel" and maybe some more I don;t know anymore...the only letdown was they omitted "Agent Orange", "Nuclear Winter" and "Ausgebombt" but hey they were awesome! A special surprise came in the form of ANY BRINGS he came on stage and played four songs from his period with the band togheter with SODOM, but to be honest I didn;t like it too much they played the punky fun songs for the most part, I'd rather have heared "Agent Orange" or "Nuclear Winter" instead...

After the show there was the DVD presentation on a big screen, awesome stuff sadly only in German, they didn;t include the subtitles (we were in Hannover after all, but no worry I speak German pretty well), awesome trailer, pretty long too at least 20 minutes. Lots of interviews and old stuff from gigs and TV appearances, interviews with fellow musicians and ex-members, Label bosses etc etc! The Concert Film was AWESOME quality you guys thought "One Night In Bangkok" was good? Just check thsi stuff!

Anyway here's some pics:

OK we were back at the Hotel at 2:00 AM pretty drunk of course, we went to sleep but only very short since we had to check out before 9:00 (!!!!!!).
After breakfast and checking out we checked the citty centre of Hannover but it was pretty boring that early in the morning and we could find no interesting CD shops....

So Off to Schrecksbach were TANKARD played last night, stopped over in Kassel (it was another 250 km drive) and had something to eat. We checked in at a hotel in Alsfeld 12 km from Schrecksbach first an hour rest since we were pretty tired, of course we had a couple of pints again that afternoon in Kassel at lunch! So we ate something at the local McDonalds and off to Bullblast festival 2005 with TANKARD headlining.

WTF! we were really in the middle of nowhere, only farms and fields and VERY tiny villages....but it was true in the "Mehrzweckshalle" in the "cantre" of the 3,300 population village of Schrecksback there was some activity! It turned out GREAT! theere were quite a lot of people though the hall was probably suited to hold 1,500 people and of course there werent that many, but it was acceptable busy....

IT was awesome we were checking out the first band as Gerre walked by and he recognized us and immediately took us backstage and gave us beer and stuf, so we had a killer time with the band and Gerre (he is really crazy!) backstage and the organizers were very very nice to us too...

TANKARD played a killer and VERY long set with all the classics and a few rare songs like "nation over nation" and one song from the "THE TANKARD" album killer performance and of course we got very very drunk! after saying goodbye to the guys from TANKARD and the organizers we went back to the hotel were we arrived at 3:15 AM, and this morning at 10:30 we drove 500 km's back to Holland...after a KILLER thrash weekend!

New TC Caddy.......Again
by jimlp on Sun Sep 18, 2005 3:49 pm
I had a thread a few days ago about a 25th Anniversary Caddy I had bought from Dave at B&T, there has been a problem and I have a question or 2. The problem has nothing to do with Dave as everyone knows he is the best to deal with, it is with the guitar I was supposed to buy. Dean had contacted Dave and told him my guitar was damaged (neck cracks, I don't know if it is in the finish or the wood), so Dave offered me another 25th Caddy. I am having some nagging questions for TC Caddy owners out there. I am taken with beauty of the guitar but there were some things that bothered me about my Czech Caddy and I am wondering if the TC will have the same quirks. My Czech Caddy was neck heavy which bothered me and the strap button on the back made the guitar roll forward a bit as well. Does the heavier body of the TC Caddy help either of these problems? Was the rolling forward thing caused by my somewhat ample mid-section or does it happen to everyone? Sorry for this long post but I do not want to spend a lot of cash and be stuck with the same problems that made me sell my Czech Caddy. Thanks in advance for any replys I receive, I want to give Dave an answer on Monday morning.

What CD packaging do you prefer?
by BLOYD on Tue Sep 20, 2005 2:35 pm
What are your thoughts on the different packaging (or none) for the CD’s you buy.

I like the digipaks. You rarely see them (due to production cost) but I think they look professional, especially if they have the high-gloss finish that protects them from residual wear and sun exposure.

I'm asking because the results here might determine how I package the next CD I'm working on... Wink
AMPS.... AMPS... AMPS!
by clmazza7 on Tue Sep 20, 2005 2:58 pm
I've owned my share of amps over the years (still have quite a few!) but when Kustom announced they were coming out with the new Coupe line.... I just had to have one!

My good old friend Jayba was happy to oblige. Jay shipped out a beautiful red 36 coupe and it was everything I thought it was going to be... read on my brethren!

Both the 36 coupe and 72 coupe were designed by amp guru James Brown.

36 watts -all tube (2-6L6 and 4-12ax7's)
self biasing
two channel
real spring reverb
standby switch
external speaker jack
effects loop
birch cab construction
impedance selector
footswitch

Did I mention the trademark tuck and roll??!! Too cool!

Great amp with fantastic TONE! The clean channel is remarkable! The best outside of my Rivera twin. The dirty channel has the right vintage crunch that I'm accustomed to. All this in a 36 watt package that can be turned up without blowing out my windows in my guitar room LOL!

The best thing about this little beauty... the price! If you're looking for a reasonably priced all tube amp....Reach out to Jay for a quote... you won't be disappointed!

15 REASONS WHY ALCOHOL SHOULD BE SERVED AT WORK...
1. It's an incentive to show up.
2. It leads to more honest communications.
3. Employees tell management what they think, not what they want to hear.
4. It encourages car pooling.
5. Increase job satisfaction because if you have a bad job, you don't care.
6. It eliminates vacations because people would rather come to work.

WHICH NEO-CLASSICAL ARTIST IS MORE CREATIVE?(Y.J.M OR M.A.B)
by HELLRAZOR92 on Tue Sep 20, 2005 9:38 pm
(YNGWIE MALMSTEEN/MICHEAL ANGELO BATIO) HI YALL MY QUESTION TO YOU GUYS IS WHICH GUITAR PLAYER YOU THINK IS MORE MUSCIAL,I BELIEVE THEY BOTH PLAY VERY FAST BUT SINCE THEY BOTH PLAY FAST , THATS NOT MY POINT RIGHT NOW..IM TALKING ABOUT WHICH GUITAR HERO IS MORE SOMETHING, I CANT FIND THE WORD ,I WOULD LOVE TO SAY THAT YNGWIE IS THE BEST IN ALL BECAUSE HE WAS BASICALLY THE MAN WHO CREATED THIS STYLE,BUT YET SOME PEOPLE DISLIKE HIM BECAUSE DOES NOT SHOW" ARTIST PROGESSION" OR SOEMTHING LIKE THAT,AND I KINDA AGREE WITH THAT,BUT ON THE OTHER HAND MICHEAL IS POPULAR HERE INTHE U.S., I THINK ITS COOL THAT HE CAN PLAY 2 GUITARS AT THE SAME TIME AND PLAY FAST ON EACH HAND,BUT SOME OF HIS SONGS IN MY OPINION,SOUND LIKE OPERATOR THINGYS WHEN THEY PUT YOU ON HOLD{DONT KILL ME FOR SAYING THAT}ANYWAYS I HOPE YOU RESPOND ,THIS IS SOMETHING I WOULD FIND INTERESTING!!!!!!!>>>>>R.I.P DIME<<<<<
Pace Bass pickup is picking up too much!

I just got a new and it plays great and I do love the sound, that is until I go to my practice space where for some reason the radio interference is so great (with only this device) that i can't really heard its sound. No joke. Is this a issue with only mine, or is there a way to correct this?

Nile and Dean
by DiezelMonster on Wed Sep 21, 2005 3:01 am
Hey guys

I'm a HUGE Nile fan, I have been since 1994 when I received thier self titled demo when they wern't really so much death metal.

anyhow, I have seen alot of pics with them and see that they play Some nice TC dean guitars, Karl has a really nice ML with a scalloped board, looks really badass. Anyhow I wanted to know if anyone else likes them here? I really wish they could get into Canada, but I'll go to buffalo to see them I suppose!

Let me know what you think, I've always been into egyptology and this is cool because they incorporate some very cool sounds!

anyhow

Cheers!

I know it's been awhile since I've popped in, but here's what's been going on. We've been in the field since the beginning of the month and it looks like that's pretty much where we are going to be for the next 1 to 2 months. I do have a computer again, so as soon as time allows I should be around more. Effective Nov. 1, my promotion to E-6 will be official. I'll check in when I can, which I don't know when or how often that will be for the next little bit.

Wargasm DVD news for the other 3 people here that like them
by transblueZ on Wed Sep 21, 2005 11:30 pm
"So he... wound up... KNEE DEEP... KNEE DEEP IN BLOOD..."

If those lyrics are familiar to you, there is no doubt that they bring a smile to your face. And if you were lucky enough to have been at the Middle East Club, in Cambridge, Massachusetts on a perfect Saturday night last year, September 18th, you probably were not able to wipe that smile off your face for days. On that night, Boston's premier metal band WARGASM reunited in front of a packed crowd, for the first time in a decade, to once again crush with their powerful brand of metal.

Playing songs spanning all three Wargasm records (Why Play Around? - 1988, Ugly – 1993, and Suicide Notes – 1994), guitarist Rich Spillberg, brother Barry on drums, and lead singer/bassist Bob Mayo pounded through a seamless set that left everybody there emotionally touched.

"People's love for Wargasm hit me like a ton of bricks. The intense passion I felt coming from them all nailed me right in the chest...", said Mayo. "The night was spiritual, as if the whole club was in dire need to be brought back to that time", said Rich, referring to the early days of Wargasm, when their new sound fed metal followers starving for something beyond the hair metal bands that the clubs had to offer.

The reunion show, promoted by Rawkstars Inc. (www.rawkstars.org) founder Jonathan "JJ" Jacobs, was filmed and digitally recorded to be included in "the quintessential Gasm release", according to Rich. "By the time we played our last shows in '95, DVDs weren't even around yet! As the rehearsals for the reunion show progressed, we felt we should definitely capture the show on film, and once the editing of that footage began, the idea grew to include a historical picture of the band, to give everyone a good look at who we are."

The DVD is set to include the entire reunion show, along with a documentary about the band, complete with vintage live footage and other candid footage of the band. Then, of course, there will be the "extras".

"We’re making sure the DVD includes everything, so it'll definitely be worth the wait!", said Barry.

Rich adds, "Anyone interested in finding out more about the release date for the DVD should send an email to wargasm_dvd@yahoo.com .

You'll be the first to know..."

Shocked Twisted Evil Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy I spent the day with a sixteen year-old virtuoso 5 string bass player, trading licks, throwing my very best at him, all day. He NEVER missed a step! Wink We are gonna write and record some things. Kid can SING, too! My regular bass player is outta the picture again with personal problems, and my clock iz ticking, so I'm moving on.
I'm also bidding you all a fond farewell. Sad I'm all about my Fenders and there's no place for me here. My pointy days are long gone, and this has become such a metal haven, that I need to split.

Elbow Pains
by Dime6604 on Sun Sep 25, 2005 11:40 am
Ok this has only just started happening to me over the last coupla days (on and off....) i get elbow pains which cause numbness that extends up my forearm and a warm tingling sensation in my elbow, which kinda makes me feel like its to do wif the ulnar nerve somehow.... it is only present in my picking arms elbow, not my fretting hands elbow at all and i dont pick from the elbow, it's entirely from my wrist....

the only thing i can think of was that it is just because i have started practicing alot more than i used to over the last month or two... other than that nothing else is different.

just a precaution i guess, i get extra worried wen things like pain etc start occuring to my arm/hands as that affects my guitar playing which is a definate NO. anyway i appreciate all the help you can offer... thanks.

'79 series Blueburst ML,V and Z still offered
by BULL on Mon Sep 26, 2005 12:52 am
I checked out Ed Roman's site today looks like he still offering the Blueburst series. Wants to have to have the 2006 version next year. Still offers the whole set of a ML, V and Z. I wish that more dealers offered them it was such a pain to get my V Bluebusrt off him. It was worth it but a pain. I may get a Bluebusrt ML next. Now that Gibson is now making the Dirty Fingers pickup again (the one I want was the John Sykes version now being made). I'd have that put in there. Cool Smile
A Question For The "Real Players"
by DizzyDean on Mon Sep 26, 2005 4:13 am
OK - I would like to hear from those of you that play your guitars everyday for at least an hour or two. Those of you who bend your strings fairly hard.

How long do your frets last before your guitar needs a refret? One of the guitarists I play with seems to go through his every 2 years or so. They're not jumbos, just standard issue American Strat frets. He plays about 2 hours every day and is a big bender (blues player). He;s a one guitar man, so his one guitar see's a lot of playing time. He was thnking he seems to go through them quickly, so I thought I'd ask here.

Nut materials used on the TCs
by tnvol on Mon Sep 26, 2005 12:16 pm
My TC ML nut is graphite but I have seen others from that signed 50 guitar run that are bone. Did they just use what they had at the time? Was there no standard when they were making them?
Im not tying to make a stink about it or anything. Im just curious.
No COA came with my TC
by jimlp on Mon Sep 26, 2005 1:33 pm
I got my TC CAddy fron Dave at B&T (gorgeous guitar) but there was no COA in the case. The guitar was shipped to Dave directly from the Dean factory, it was a 2003 leftover that was on the "hot list" of avaliable guitars. Dave is talking to Dean to see if they still have the COA there, if they do not does anyone know if they will print another one for me? Thanks in advance for your replys.
Paco de Lucia concert
by NoHand on Mon Sep 26, 2005 4:48 pm
Last week I was at a Paco de Lucia concert.
It was great on many levels, the music,
setting, atmosphere, audience... Well here
is how it went:

First Paco came on to the stage and did
a couple of songs all by himself.
Then a couple with three singers and
the last song of the first half of the show
with a drummer, bass player, keyboard player,
second guitar and the formerly mentioned 3 singers.

After a 10 minutes recess they all came back
and delivered 2 ~20 minute killer flamenco tunes
and got a storm of applause from a standing and whistling
audience.

Like true flamenco stars they did an encore
song with amazing solos from all the players.
Man that bass player really could solo on his
5-string bass...

The concert was held in the old bullfighting
arena (Ventas) in Madrid. So the setting was
great for flamenco music. At aroung 11 pm,
the moon rose from behind the stage making
the scene quite nice and nothing short of romantic.
The atmosphere all through the concert was relaxed
and the players as well as the audience really
had a great time.

Man that cat can play his guitar...

Probably won't be getting the pulitzer with
this review, but hopefully something got
conveyed of the event.
Subject - Guitars
by Rex Herring on Mon Sep 26, 2005 5:59 pm
Sorry to change the pace of the General Forum but I thought I'd talk about guitars.

There are several different camps here as with most forums or brand name guitars. We have the "Pointy Only", the "Not So Pointy", and the "Who Cares as Long as it's a Dean". I do think we miss a lot of the forum members here that appreciate a good guitar no matter what brand.

Oops, I got distracted by something shiny........ I was going to talk about guitars.

I love my Deans but am missing some sounds that I love from the Fender Strat three pckup set-up. I do have a problem with the layout of the Strat. The way I play, the controls are always in the way and I'm always banging them and changing the volume. I also like to rest my hand on the bridge and it just doesn't work right for me. So-------

Would anyone else be interested in a three single coil pickup Dean other than the Avalanche such as the EVO, Hardtail, Vendetta?
I'd love a Hardtail Select with the three single coils and 5 way selector. Anyone else?
Ignore Feature
by Thor Malleuson on Mon Sep 26, 2005 6:28 pm
I am thinking it may be time for the Dean Guitars Forum to institute an ignore feature. Perhaps User and/or Sub-Forum?

I don't know how easy or hard this may be to do, but I think it may alleviate some bad feeling going around lately.

WHAT SHOULD I BE FOR HALLOWEEN?
by \.../_METAL_\.../ on Mon Sep 26, 2005 10:47 pm
Well, this year I'm actually going to put some(not much, but a little) effort into a costume. Do you guys have any ideas on what would be cool to scare the s#%t out of the people at school. I was thinking something to do with satanic logos, devil horns, etc.(btw t's a Catholic school.) Maybe something simpler like Jim Root from Slipknot, but I can't find any masks like his, or maybe something like a Kiss costume. Thanks in advance.

OK I'm thinking about getting someone a digital camera for Christmas, and would like some input on what kind to get. It needs to be somewhat easy to use, (hey the person is somewhat tech challenged). I know a lot of you are knowledgeable in this area, which is why I'm asking here. Thanks for any ideas!

I'm thinking about building myself a rack but! I do not know anything about rackmounts. For example I do not know what are the good companies and witch are not... What I'm getting at here is, If you use rackmounts or know little things about them please post it.

Sorry if it's a messy paragraph but I'm really tired.
Case Solved: ML Platinum ( Was "MLX... & What Case
by shrimpfork on Tue Sep 27, 2005 12:31 am
I'm assuming this is an MLX because it's a bolt-on, but I thought all MLXs came with dot inlays and no binding?

Any thoughts on when this was made? It's MIK (so serial number does me nothing), Grover tuners, and all hardware is chrome.

Image

Also, will this fit in any ML case (if I were to buy it from someplace like Musician's Friend or Music123)? Research leads to to believe that it will.

Thanks everyone!

TC vs Vintage
by slaytanic on Tue Sep 27, 2005 3:31 am
Im not too familiar with the TC's but by what I understand, they are made in USA and are capturing the same quality as vintage deans? Whats your opinion (those who own a TC AND/or have one or played one) vs the vintage Deans. Do the TC's come with the V neck the Dean was known for? Same specs as vintage as in necks, headstocks, bodies, hardware? Whats the deal?

I'm Impressed....As always with Dean guitars - PORN ADDED!
by kevphol on Tue Sep 27, 2005 5:59 pm
I recently pickup up a deal on a pair of cherryburst 79s, a V and Z, mostly because it was just too good of a deal to pass up. As most of you know I enjoy trading guitars fairly frequently and always shopping for a great deal, but I haven't been much of a "pointy" guy, even though I have owned a couple.

I recently chronicled here all of the Deans I have gone through over the past 2 yrs or so, all MIKs and Czechs including pointies, non-pointies, acoustics, semi-hollows and bass, and let me just say that I have been duly impressed with the great VALUE in every one of them. That is to say, each model offers great quality respective to its price range. These two 79s are no exception. They both have a great feel to them and look terriffic. Though interestingly seem to have slightly different neck profiles. (Can somebody verify this or am I just crazy?)

Anyway, kudos to Dean and Elliot on great products in EVERY line. Utimately, THAT'S what this forum is all about. As for all of the nonsense that goes on, well I guess I've participated in my share of photoshop fun with gnomes, etc., but I'm glad to leave the policing that is necessary to the Brave One and his trusty sidekick Jimbo! Just for the record, I don't plan on running off because of somebody's opinion or some ridiculous posts. MY own Ignore feature works just fine! Wink

So, props to Dean! Keep up the great work!

Strap Question
by Jeepman on Tue Sep 27, 2005 8:14 pm
Possibly a really below 70 IQ type question, but I'll ask it anyway....can the strap button closest to the neck be moved? I"ve tried 3 different straps and they all seem to limit my movement to the higher frets. Has anyone else had this little dilemna,or just me? Smile I was worried about moving it back because I thought it might throw off the balance. Help....please.

Guitar woods ...
by Laudanum on Wed Sep 28, 2005 2:56 pm
I saw that Dean is putting out an inexpensive model of the Vendetta line with the Vedetta XM. What I find interesting is the wood choice. It is listed as Paulowinia wood. This is a fairly lightweight wood from the fastest growing or one of the fastest growing large trees, the Paulowinia tree otherwise called the "Empress" tree or "Princess" tree. This tree grows 12 ft tall in its 1st year and 25 ft. tall in 3 years !!! Also grows just about anywhere in any soil condition and is resistant to just about everything from poor environment to disease.
Anyway, the point is that this makes this wood an extremely economical choice for instrument building and all other commercial uses that it may be good for. I have never seen a guitar made of this stuff and have no idea whether it's a good tone wood at all. Has anyone heard of an instrument made of this stuff? I'm not in the market for another guitar right now but these Vendetta XM's ought to street at just a little over $100 (Probably China made like the Evo XM). I think I'm gonna snag one just to check out the wood. Does anyone have any experience with this wood at all or had a chance to check out the Vendetta XM yet? I haven't seen them out yet so ....

Sorry for the book.

by BRG on Wed Sep 28, 2005 9:18 pm
We shipped a guitar to a customer in Florida on the 16th. Because DHL is moving their hub to a new location in Kansas City, they have MANY truckloads, mostly of large packages, sitting in limbo waiting to be moved.

As I said, DO NOT USE DHL!!!!!!

It's been nearly two weeks and they can't even tell us where the package is ... they CAN tell us where its not, but ... well, you get the picture.

pickup ideas
by see you auntie on Wed Sep 28, 2005 10:03 pm
I've been playing a few of my guitars lately and the only one i'm flat out not happy with is the Dean Vendetta 4.0.

It's a great looking guitar but I'd like it to have a great sound as well. Any ideas on some good pickup combinations for this beauty? I have Seymour Duncan Jazz/JB combo in my EVO Special Select. I have no idea what is in my Washburn X Series but they are great pickups (stock) but i'm not sure what Washburn uses.

I'd like to be able to get a nice distortion (not really death-metal or anything) just something that sounds pretty good, as well as a fairly good clean channel as i use both frequently.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Dean TC Caddy pickup question
by jimlp on Thu Sep 29, 2005 3:17 am
I have had my TC Caddy for about a week now and I am not sure I like the bridge pickup. Is the bridge pickup supposed to be a Dimarzio SD? I am asking because it is very bright with a looser low end and my other TC's with SD's in them were dark sounding, this pickup sounds like a hot Duncan Pearly Gates. I am assuming that it should be a Dimarzio SD and I probably have a bright sounding guitar but I thought I would ask here anyway. TC Caddy owners please feel free to give me some input as far as your experiences go. Thanks in advance for any replys I may receive.

Cadillac with Floyd Rose
by stspider on Thu Sep 29, 2005 2:37 pm
Hi, I'm searching some information about this Dean Cadillac I'm considering whether to buy or not.

It comes with maple top, binding on headstock body and freatboard, dot inlays and a floyd rose.

The headstock is smaller than the ones I see they make now,but the shape is similiar.

The serial number is S94020644.

The questions are..

Which model is?

Where/when was it built?

Is it considered a good model - year and so on?

Thank You very much.
Warmoth
by Electrodog on Thu Sep 29, 2005 2:46 pm
I was just wondering and wanted to gather opinions on warmoth, has anyone ever bought their pickups and have they been any good Question

The woods also, i was thinking about building a guitar but theres a lot of stuff to study so far i guess top grade mahogany is what im looking for, im not a total mad wailer i love my cleans too so im unsure if theres a wood thaths better.

Why do exotic woods cost more is it because they are rarer or do they just have better tonality?

Thanks, simon Wink

This is the second time these guys have advertized a Brazilian Burst Dean Stylist. I contacted them through e-bay and asked what kind of guitar it was as it wasn't a Dean Stylist or Brazilburst.
All I got back was "Sorry", that was it, the listing is still up. They had it listed several weeks ago the same way. Hey Amp guys - How do these OHMs work?
by DizzyDean on Thu Sep 29, 2005 10:39 pm
I've got a line on a really nice vintage Traynor Bassman Head and a couple of cabs. The Head is rated 8 ohms output. The speaker cabs are 16 ohms. The head has 2 outputs for speakers, but I'm not sure if that means it steps down the ohms.

So, can I run an 8 ohm head into a 16 ohm speaker. And, on these older vintage heads, if I run 2 cabs, does that mean I'm stepping down the 8 ohms out to 16 ohms each side?
Pretty good joke..
by TOO OLD FOR THIS on Thu Sep 29, 2005 11:07 pm
My brother in law sent me this joke.. actually laughed out loud in an empty house... here ya go...

A guy is driving around and he sees a sign in front of a house: "Talking Dog For Sale." He rings the bell, and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees a Labrador Retriever sitting there.

"You talk?" he asks.

"Yep," the Lab replies.

"So, what's your story?"

The Lab looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young, and I wanted to help the government; so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running."

"But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I wanted to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired."

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

"Ten dollars."

The guy says, "This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?"

"Because he's a liar. He didn't do any of that sh!t."

hi everyone, anyways i was wondering if DEAN makes ML's with the paint job of dimes"the dean from hell" guitar,i havent found one on this site other than the baby ML,the only gutiars i see that have that paint job is on ebay and usally its under WASHBURN name,i wish DEAN made a another tribute model but with the dimebolt paint job,i would buy that guitar in a heart beat, anyways the question was if DEAN makes any "the dean fomr hell"models or if they will even make em??......................... i have seen the baby ml,i really dont like them
