your new years stories
by Sharky on Sun Jan 01, 2006 6:22 am
heres my story. i went to a mates place to have a few drinks, then we would catch a taxi to the beach where the fireworks were. everything was going pretty good, until it came to the taxi ride. one of my friends had had an entire bottle of black label vodka, and a few 100 meters until we got to the beach, he vomitted in the taxi...we got fined $70 and the taxi ride costed $30...that has to be the most expensive taxi ride i've ever caught. to top it off we got let off right in front of cops and we were all tryng to walk straight and speak without sounding like we were drunk.

the fireworks were pretty sh!t, and we couldnt catch a bus or taxi cos they were busy most of the night. so in the end we walked about 10kms, carrying our friend all the way.

not a great way to enter the new year....
Guitar Duos

Who's everyone's favorite guitar duos.

For me, it's gotta be
Max and Andres from Sepultura
and sadly James and Kirk from Metallica

and just because of the stuff that they did as far as layers and stuff, the 2 dudes from Napalm Death.

And while we're on it and saving it from being another thread....who's your favorite singer/guitarist. They have to do both to count

Max Cavalera Sep/Soulfly and Rob Flynn from Machine Head do it for me

What Amp to buy??
by BigHow on Sun Jan 01, 2006 3:00 pm
I didn't know where else to put this so I hope this is o.k. I am looking for a new amp, I am using a small 10 watt Marshall and it just isn't going to cut it. I have been looking at the Behringer GMX 212 or the Line 6 Spider 212. Does anyone have any recommendations other than these two. I do have a budget of about $300, so used is o.k. Thanks for the help.

Vintage tone
by Ed K on Mon Jan 02, 2006 4:11 am
I like to play blues, and I was test driving a fender blues junior amp at a shop the other day. I was playing my 78' standard V through it and this guy walks in and says "man, I never heard such deep blues tones out of a V. I didn't think you could get a V to sound like that." I just smiled and said thanks. Can't beat a vintage tone. Just thought I'd share. Happy new year.

INNOVATIONS: PREMIUM GUITARS

Guitar start-up composes new look
Futuristic design takes on Fender and Gibson's dominance

By David Colker
Tribune Newspapers: Los Angeles Times
Published January 2, 2006

For decades, nearly all of rock's famed guitarists play models made by Fender Musical Instruments Corp. or Gibson Musical Instruments, making those guitars the dominant choices for players who can afford $1,000 and up for a premium ax.

Challengers regularly try, but usually fail to break in the guitar world's top tier. But that doesn't stop them from trying.

"Every year there are a bunch of guys who try," said Ken Daniels, owner of Truetone Music in Santa Monica, which specializes in high-end guitars. "And every year most of them drop like flies."

The latest contender is California-based RKS Guitars, which is optimistic after landing one of its futuristic lime-green guitars on the cover of BusinessWeek's annual design issue this summer.

RKS founder Ravi K. Sawhney said he wasn't thinking about the long odds when he decided to get into the guitar business--he was simply excited about the chance to break the mold.

A prominent product designer, Sawhney's RKS Design in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has created the look of photo printers for Hewlett-Packard Co., cell phones for Nokia and vacuum cleaners for Sears.

About five years ago, one of his designers started working up a new pattern for an electric guitar. Sawhney was taking guitar lessons at the time and decided to approve the project.

"I can't say we sat down and studied and analyzed the failures of the past," said Sawhney, 49.

Rocker Dave Mason, whom Sawhney met through mutual acquaintances, came on board early to help with the design and tone. More recently, software entrepreneur Dale Jensen, the majority owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks and a rock 'n' roll enthusiast, provided additional funding.

Last year, the company opened a factory in North Carolina and shipped 300 guitars, Sawhney said. But he was making continuing changes in the design and wanted the plant closer to his design studio. In June, RKS opened its factory in Oxnard, Calif., getting a boost soon thereafter from the BusinessWeek cover.

The guitar was the second-place winner in the Disruptive Design category, with the judges pointing to the instrument's unusual "open architecture" look, in which the electric pickups appear to float in the middle of a high-tech body.

Despite the acclaim, however, the company is in its infancy. Its 15-worker factory turns out just eight guitars a day, and RKS has sold only 27 instruments made in Oxnard to music stores. The instruments retail for $2,200 and up.

In addition to the innovative design, Sawhney thinks that his fledgling company has several factors in his favor.

One is a surge in sales of electric guitars. Although most of the growth has been in cheaper imports from China selling for less than $150, the premium market is also booming. Sales of models retailing for $1,000 and up rose 27.5 percent last year, according to Music Trades magazine.

That's partly from Baby Boomers who now have the means to buy instruments they have wanted since high school. Many of these players already have Fenders and Gibsons, giving RKS--at least in theory--a shot at customers looking for something new and different.

"A golfer might have one set of clubs; a person into fishing might have a couple different rods," said Paul Majeski, publisher of Music Trades. "But you never find a serious guitar player with just one or two guitars. They have a trading card mentality."

"RKS already has something going," he added. "They are already ahead of where most companies are at this point. The odds are not insurmountable."

But they are daunting.

Fender has $380 million in annual sales of guitars, amplifiers and related equipment and Gibson has $210 million, Music Trades estimates. From there, it's a wide chasm to the next company that specializes in electric guitars: Paul Reed Smith, or PRS, Guitars, with $28.1 million.

Fender, with its famed Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars, and Gibson, best known for its Les Paul line, have largely defined the electric guitar sound in rock and pop.

At studio recording sessions, professional guitarists typically show up with at least one Fender and one Gibson, Grammy-winning record producer Jimmy Jam noted.

"I know in my mind what a Tele and a Strat and Les Paul sound like," said Jam, who has worked with pop stars including Usher, Mariah Carey and Gwen Stefani. "There is a comfort level for me, personally, when someone pulls the guitar I'm thinking of out of a case."

Paul Ash, president of the Sam Ash Music Corp. retail chain, believes RKS may have a shot if it can get rising stars to play its products.

"You have to make it a point to visit clubs," said Ash, whose father founded the company. "Show the guitar to musicians, let them handle them, try them for a few days."

Sawhney said it had cost about $7 million to get RKS to this point. Sawhney put up $3.5 million of his own money, he said, with Jensen and a partner kicking in $2 million and $200,000 from Mason.

The venture isn't a do-or-die proposition for any of the partners. Sawhney's primary business remains RKS Design, while Mason still plays about 150 concerts a year.

Jensen who has a minority stake in the NBA's Phoenix Suns and sits on the board of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, said he joined RKS Guitars because it was "fun to be a part of it."

Turn it up

Electric guitar sales are soaring, aided by Baby Boomers and an onslaught of low-priced imports from China. The higher-end market is dominated by the Fender and Gibson brands. Electric guitar sales by price range (in number of units):

HELP with pedalboard
by Anonymous on Mon Jan 02, 2006 7:50 pm
I never had a pedal boad. I just use whatever my amp can give me.
In 2005 I bought a Digitech RPx400 just for fun and mainly for the USB recording capabilities.

Yesterday I bought from a friend who was selling his guitar gear a bunch of pedals and a small Squier 15w amp.

I paid less than $120 (USD) for it all:
Boss MT2 Metal Zone
Behringer Noise Reduce
Behringer Compression Sustainer
Behringer Graphic Equalizer
Fender PT-100 stompbox tuner
Boss power adapter
Daisy cable
Squier 15w amp w/ 8" and 8ohm fender speaker (dated 1991)

Now these are for sure some newb questions, but:
Can someone help me out how (in what order) should I rig all of this togeter including Digitech RPx400?
What exactly is a FX-loop?

by Saradilc on Mon Jan 02, 2006 10:59 pm
Guys, check out the band Quo Vadis. They are a local band from around my area (Montreal, Quebec) , but they are really really good. You can tell since you can find their albums in any HMV around here.

I just picked up their DVD for cheap ($20 Canadian) and its amazing for the cost. You get 3 disks, one of them is completely drum footage though (you'll see why once you hear a couple of their songs)

Check them out, you wont regret it..

I recommend you check out:

Silence calls the storm, Legions of the betrayed, Point of no return: Mute Requiem, Dead man's diary..

Those are a few of their best songs (IMO) to get you started.
Wall hangers, Good or bad?
by SouthpawShredder on Mon Jan 02, 2006 11:21 pm
I was wandering, is it bad to hang your guitar from a wall? From the neck? You know, like they are at pretty much any music store.
Because I've heard it is bad to pickup your guitar from the neck. So wouldnt it be bad to have it hang from the neck?
I have 4 hanging right now, and 1 of them has a crack near the neck joint. I dont know if its from hanging, me being rough, or just crappy guitar.
I want to know, so I can prolong the life of my beloved FBD. And my future Ibanez RG1570.

Thanks guys.

My master cylinder head had cracked and all the brake fluid leaked out. No brakes!!! A fun thrill ride on the highway!!!!

I'm wearing my DOA shirt. I own 5 Dean shirts, so I wear one several days a week.

One of the Ford service reps Dad works for Dean! He works in sales along with Tony (I think his last name is Gillespie). He was telling me about going to DOA a few years ago and that Elliott is totally cool.

Also, someone else that works there is a Dean player.

by circusfreak6 on Tue Jan 03, 2006 4:30 am
I am looking to join and I have a few questions. What are the odds of going to Iraq, or any foreign country for that matter? What are the odds of dying over there. Ive heard that you have a better chance of dying from a car accident than you do in the military. For my MOS im lookin to go for electrician or hvac. Ive heard from people in the army that there isnt that much action over in Iraq anymore. Theres not very many soldiers dying. These are the main things that are swaying my joining.

and just yesterday Van Halens Panama made it's way in my head.

being high and getting higher for the sky
by Jack the Stripper on Tue Jan 03, 2006 9:45 pm
Yeah dred, I'm hear today to preach the kick-assery of my island homes (Trinidad) very own ORANGE SKY !!!

Up to last month they have been touring the states with Malmsteen who is so sold on the band he asked them to finish the tour with him before they head off to Europe to tour with Thin Lizzy.

Before that they toured with Adema (Who I feel verrry sorry for)

So what exactly does Orange Sky sound like? Take Judas Preist, GnR, AC/DC and Black Sabbath with some of that Pantera groove thrown in and mesh it together with Bob Marley, Steel Pulse and Peter Tosh. Add some Lizzy for flavor and spice it up with ganja on the side and you have a brief idea on what Orange Sky sounds like.

I imagen some have already beared witness to Sky however i thought I would add that little intro for those who havent.

(The dude in my avatar is Nigal Rojas, the lead singer and lead guitarest)

And here are some full pics of the guitar. MIK ML Standard. Trans red finish...I switched all the hardware to black. I painted some of the screws, but whatever, it looks killer. This guitar is dangerous. I just had a set up done on it, and while I don't like the lighter strings I accidentally picked out, the thing plays amazing. (If I switched to a higher would it affect the setup? OR take out the little bit of fret buzz there is? So yeah, big thanks to Steve at BRG for hookin me up with the tuners, pup rings, string plate, and all that. I'll #$%@ up now.. BONUS PORN!!!

Any experience with Exotica Andes?
by fAessi on Wed Jan 04, 2006 4:15 pm
Hello together

I was just wondering if there are any experiences with the Dean Exotica Andes Acoustic Guitar. I'ts the only acoustic I've ever seen that's made of Rosewood. The look of this guitar is just awesome but how about the sound? Are there any differences to other acoustics? And the most important - how is the quality? Dean isn't always the best company for quality and/or right setup (I made this experience with my USA Dean Hardtail spalted maple).

It would be great to have some voices over here - thanks in advance.

Effects Pedal Chips (Pedal Gurus?)
by X6StringerX on Thu Jan 05, 2006 4:36 am
Any pedal gurus out there?

I know many of you guys have heard of the infamous JRC4558 chip that comes in many Ibanez Tube Screamers... as well as many other pedals.

Well, I've been bitten by the pedal bug. I have an early-mid 80's Studio Series FL-01 Flanger here and I decided to open it up earlier today to check out the guts. Upon inspection, I noticed it has a chip labled TL4558P along with the little Texas Instrument symbol. I remember reading something about the Texas Instrument chips a year or so ago, so I Google'd the chip model number and was surprised to find out that it is actually the rarest chip they ever put in the original Ibanez TS-808 pedals. I was thinking of tossing this pedal on eBay, but the chip is probably worth more than the pedal to someone that mods.

Anyways, I guess what I'm wanting to know is more about these 4558 chips... not just the JRC, TL, or RC, but any of the ones you guys can shed some light on. I know the pedal game can be tricky and a lot of people get hung up on what components are in the pedal. I just want to know what all of the fuss is about.

So having said that, lets see some Avalanche pics and stories. C'mon out Avalanche fans, I know you're out there. Razz I'll start, although my Avalanche is now in the hands of the BRG guitars guy. I did a mild relic on it and the knobs are from an old 60s clock radio. BTW BRG guy, if you want those knobs lemme know and I'll send them to you. Flame away!!

Studio band practice.
by MasterplayerC on Fri Jan 06, 2006 3:36 am
So I'm playing with a band at my school battle of the bands in February. I've played one, two song, gig in my entire life, and havent been playing for much more than a year. I'm very new to the band environment, and it is taking a lot of getting used to. Anyway, now with that preface, actual studio practice time.

We went to "The Studio" in NYC to practice today. The place is cheap, for 3 hours the 4 of us had to pay like $8 each. The major downside is that the place is like, 20 years out of date Laughing I have never seen so many terrible amps in one room. There was a mesa head with a marshall cab that I finally decided on, that not only took me 10 minutes to get sounding decent, but even then sounded like major poo. I was amazed at how terrible every amp was. My cheap 10W Ibanez starter practice amp sounds like the perfect tone compared to those things. I was just surprised at the quality of everything in the room. Are all studios this bad? If there are better, is the price difference that large?

Another thing I noticed, even simple songs can be butchered when everyone is playing at a totally different tempo Laughing The main drummer wanted to cover Master of Puppets and after having us laugh at him last time, he said he re-learned it and proceeded to make an ass out of himself again. He knows most of the parts, but it is ridiculously sloppy, he has problems picking to make the notes actually sound the right way, and when it came to the easiest part of the song, that clean part and then the harmony, I was playing it much better than him, and I suck Laughing I think I prefer being the bad guitarist who doesn't know the songs over the arrogant guitarist who thinks he can play a song like Master.

Just thought I would rant a little about my day at band practice, maybe get some responses or advice from you guys.

P.S. I was, and will be using my FBD for the battle of the bands, and I will definitely be getting atleast second place in cool factor (my friend has a ZW Gibson and a Dime southern cross, so he might beat me)

The songs we will be playing, as of right now are

Nirvana - Breed or possibly Lounge Act
Sabbath - NIB
Sabbath - Children of the Grave
Rage Against the Machine - Guerilla Radio
Andrew WK - She is Beautiful
Led Zeppelin - Black Dog

Its more of a crowd pleaser set than anything else, we went for songs that the crowd would recognize and enjoy more than for ourselves, but the two Sabbath songs had to make the cut.
So does anyone here NOT own a dean?

Last Tune for VoV! Dean Forum Members Decided its fate!
by JA Allen on Fri Jan 06, 2006 3:33 pm
This one I wanted to shelve. I was not happy with it at all at one point. Which was strange, It just wasnt flowing out. I created something I thought I was not good enough to do properly, and I still dont. This one was on the verge of being shelved, but Brian and I slugged it out and this is what came out. Also it was the hardest one to get out. It uses modes and key changes throughout (A theory play) and follows the chords to each modulation, and also counterpoint. Trying to keep it a song and melodic and not some joke shred fest is what pissed me off a lot and was frustrating the hell out of me, plus all the personal crap I was going through (which btw, I am very happy now).

What was really fun is that, friends of mine from the forum here, were the ones who heard it in its raw mix state, were given the opportunity to tell me to can it or keep it and finish it, and it made it onto the album by their decision! So, it is all yours really, The Dean Forum!.

One more mix has to be done by Brian, and I am sure it will be perfect, but this is the final pre-master by my studio, so we will play them back-to-back this Saturday. His usually wins all the time!

Oh, almost forgot, its called "Ultra Modal Super Stomp"

Enjoy! http://vov.tentenland.net/mp3/umss1.mp3
Family member leaving
by Dug on Fri Jan 06, 2006 3:44 pm
Well I've come to a conclusion. Since I broke my leg on November 4th, all my friends have aided me in one way or another. But one has kinda stood out from the rest. The guy has gotten groceries for me 6 times, taken me to 8 doctors appointments, took me guitar looking once and brought a bunch of stuff to keep me entertained in my hours of solitude, ie Guitar world, Guitar one and Mustangs and Fast Fords, also got me a calender for my birthday with half unclad lasses. I liked that last one alot.

Anyway he is an old blues guy, has a nice Telecaster and a nice Epiphone Dot and I have decided that I should give him my Dean EVO 60. As all the older members will remember I got the guitar for a song because the store went out of Dean business, but it is a very nice guitar and I think he could use the P90's better than I could.

So that is my decision, just thought that I would share it with you all.

Anyone tried these? They're metal-tastic!

They're plectrums that come in brass, stainless steel and copper.

S.Steel - light
Brass - medium
Copper - Heavy

I've just got one of each for my bruv-inlaw and tried 'em out. The med/heavy are great for electric, haven't tried, but I'd think the steel would be good for serious acoustic mayhem! Twisted Evil

Received Some Goodies (rant included)
by X6StringerX on Sat Jan 07, 2006 3:26 am
I received my DOD YJM308 pedal from Musician's Friend. I placed the order on the 3rd and received it today... 3 days later. Thats good in my book. The pedal was well packed and in flawless condition... as expected since it was brand new.

I also received my Epi Valve Jr. amp and GTECC83 tube from Music123. This order was placed on the 28th of December. I understand that this order was placed in the midst of the holiday season, but I believe they could have shipped it earlier. I tracked it and it too was shipped on January 3rd. The amp I ordered was c-stock, but I've yet to find any blemishes. It was actually in a factory-sealed box, so perhaps they shipped me the wrong one. This is the only reason I am not raising total hell in the next paragraph...

The tube is another story. An extremely large outer box was used to hold the amp box and tube. (I could actually fit three of these amps on their side in this outer box) The tube was just in a protective sleeve... if you can call it that. The "sleeve" is paper thin and provides zero support. You can probably tell where this is going... the tube was shattered. I called customer service as soon as I discovered the shattered tube. I was put on hold for over 20 minutes. I decided to try back later. This was around 1:00pm. I tried back around 3:30pm and was put on hold once again. I decided to wait it out this time. 45 minutes later, I was connected with a real person and the elevator music stopped. I explained the situation to the customer service lady and she gave me the return shipment number and all of that good stuff. She assured me that I would receive a pre-paid UPS shipping label through email in 3-4 business days. (I found this to be absurd... she had the capability to send me one while I was on the phone with her.) She told me to send the tube back to them ASAP when I receive the label because it is only good for 10 days. She then explained to me that it would take another 3-4 business days for Music123 to examine the tube and send out a replacement. WHAT IS THERE TO EXAMINE? Your Music123 below 70 IQ type-dumbs tossed a tube in the bottom of a box with a 25lb amp on top of it and handed it off to the FedEx oafs to finish the job.

Now don't get me wrong here guys, I know that $13.99 (price of tube) isn't going to make me or break me, but between the time I spent today on hold and the time/gas it will take me to go to the nearest UPS drop location (35 miles away), this is getting frustrating. Surely if a large company like Music123 can absorb the cost of the new tube, they can trust that I am not lying to them about it and send me another one without having to go through all of this hassle. If not for the principle of this matter, I would toss it and order from somewhere else.

I've never encountered any problems with Musicians Friend. This is my first (and last) time ordereing from Music123. I'll pay MF an extra $20 next time because they do the job right.

On to the review... At this time, I'm just going to say that I believe the money for the amp and pedal were VERY well spent. I played the amp all evening and I haven't found an unusable sound yet. Its great for blues and classic rock and with the pedal, I can venture off into what I deem an acceptable hard rock tone. I will completely review this amp and pedal in a couple weeks after the "honeymoon" phase has left. Until then, I urge you guys to drop a bill on one of these Epi Valve Jr. amps... For less than $100, you get a single-ended all-tube 5-watt class A amp with an 8" Weber Ceramic Signature speaker and a niftly little control panel with a single volume knob. Another plus is that there is actually a 4 ohm jack on the back, so if you wish to run an extension cab, you just have to plug it in.

Ex-Megadeth members join Ronnie Montrose Band
by BULL on Sat Jan 07, 2006 5:03 am
I just checked out Blabbermouth.net it appears former Megadeth members Jimmy Degrasso drums and David Ellefson bass are bands mates again. They are joining one of my favorite guitarist Ronnie Montrose. Awesome news hes also got a new album coming out featuring a great fleet of vocalist Sammy Hagar(hes on the first two Montrose albums. Must haves for any classic rock lover) Joe Elliot of Def Leppard, Edgar Winter. I know late last year Paul Stanley of Kiss as also been said to appear on the album. Hopefully he'll tour around the USA. Cool
Did I hear and see that right Schenker Brothers at NAMM/DEAN
by BULL on Sat Jan 07, 2006 5:10 am
Its cool news! But isnt Michael not comin back to the USA because of some legal trouble. Anyways I hope it happens. Rudolph and Michael Schenker WoW! Two of the very best guitarist in Hard Rock/Heavy Metal history. The riffs those two have came up with. Yes Mikes a better soloist but when Rudolph solo in Scorpions slow ballad songs its very memorable. It'd be real cool to see Ruldolph strap on a Schenker Dean V guitar. I've read Rudolp owns a Gibson Flying V guitar for early since the "V" was introduced. In 1958 thats a ton of V's.

Big Vin looking for "different and out-there talent''
by Troy\m/ on Sat Jan 07, 2006 2:28 pm
From Blabbermouth:

"Former PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul is currently looking for "different and out-there talent" for his new record label, Big Vin Records. Bands can send submissions to:

BVR
420 E. Lamar, No. 212
Arlington, Texas 76011

As previously reported, Big Vin Records has secured a distribution deal via Fontana. The label's first release will be an album from REBEL MEETS REBEL, a unique crossover of country, metal and rock. It features three of the founding members of PANTERA (Vinnie Paul, Dimebag and bassist Rex Brown) together with legendary country singer/outlaw David Allan Coe. REBEL MEETS REBEL's CD was recorded over a four-year period and is set to contain a total of 12 tracks, including "Nothin' To Lose", "Rebel Meets Rebel", "Cowboys", "Panfillo", "Heartworn Highway", "One Night Stand", "Arizona Rivers", "A Man With Nothin' Ain't Got Nothin' to Lose", "New York City Streets" and "Get Outta My Life". The title track, "Rebel Meets Rebel", was previously said to be a duet with PANTERA singer Philip Anselmo, although it is not presently clear if Anselmo's contributions will make it to the final product. "Rebel Meets Rebel" is tentatively scheduled for release in March 2006.

The second project to be released via Big Vin will be a DVD, "Dimevision", as a tribute to Dimebag, one of metal's all-time guitar greats who is credited by some for creating the original concept which eventually became the MTV hit series "Jackass". "Dimevision" features Dime's stellar guitar playing and offbeat brand of humor, and is sure to be a title every serious PANTERA fan will have to own.

PANTERA's career overview CD, "The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits!", has sold 476,000 in the United States since its September 2003 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The 16-song "Vulgar Hits!" CD was packaged with a bonus DVD boasting 12 videos, including two live performances. The bulk of the material was culled from the band's six major-label releases, but also included are non-album cuts "Cat Scratch Fever" (a cover of the TED NUGENT song that originally appeared on the Polygram soundtrack to "Detroit Rock City") and the BLACK SABBATH cover "Hole in the Sky", previously available only on import."

79 V
by Alex! on Sat Jan 07, 2006 7:03 pm
Could you guys give me the lowdown on the 79V? I started working afterschool and I'm actually going to be able to afford some decent gear, and I was previously thinking about getting a Jackson RR3 or KVX10 (I REALLY like the shape of the guitars, and they're supposed to be good) but I've been looking at the price of the 79 V and it's really affordable, and looks to be a damn nice guitar.

So guys, convert me from Jackson to Dean Very Happy

Ted Nugent For Governor?
by JACKHOLE on Sun Jan 08, 2006 12:49 am
UPI is reporting that fourth-term National Rifle Association director and Motor City Madman Ted Nugent says a Michigan gubernatorial run is in the cards for 2010.

"I could have won in '06," the politically conservative rocker said in Saturday's New York Daily News.

Nugent said Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm "is not doing an ugly job, but as the perfect woman, she is scrotumless."

Nugent said he had too much going on with his TV shows and civic duties to mount a serious run.

"I figured the last thing I need ... was the governor responsibility in a scrambling cleanup, damage-control situation as Michigan is," he told The News.

The star of the OLN network's "Wanted: Ted or Alive" reiterated his criticism of the welfare system, railing against "the pimps and whores and welfare brats" who think they've "got the right to my (money) because Jesse Jackson represents (them)."

He also had some advice for the hungry.

"A topless grandmother in a sofa surrounded by dog feces? If you're poor, you can't have a dog! You start by eating the (expletive) pets! Am I out of my mind?"

Peavey super 40 efx review
by j.arledge on Sun Jan 08, 2006 5:54 am
Well it has been a few days since i got my super 40. I thought i'd wait till i got use to the sound , feel and controls of the amp before posting my review about it.

1. The amp is heavier , weighing in at about 53 pounds for a 2x12 . that is heavey to me but it may not be compared to other amps in it's class.

2. I am confident in it's reliablity, after all it survived FEDEX shipping .

3. I took a small chance on thinking that although the crunch doesn't have it's own eqs that it would be very simular to that of the xxx head. IT isn't . The gain is a bit more vintage voiced, and there isn't as much . The gain can be a little rough when set low but it compresses up nicely .

4. The ultra channle is pretty much the same as the head . It has an active eq and is pretty moldable. The clean/crunch has standard passive eq

5. The amp is 40 watts and the speaker is 30 . i have turned it up to about 3 and it is loud as hell , but i am not sold that the speaker could handle all the power that the amp can push out . I'll have a chance to find out soon enough and i will of couse report back on it.

6. The power tubes are well protected , but heat travels up and located on the back panel of the amp directly above the the power tubes is the insert for the footswitch . The cable got warm in about 30 minuets of play . I am not sure how warm it could get , but the insert could have been located to one side or the other.

7. The effects are actually kind of good. They can be a bit hard to control due to some limitations on editing the intensity and speeds . Overall a nice touch though.

8. footswitchable volume boost option . This is a great feature that i think should be on all amps in one form or another .

9. If you enjoy the sound of the xxx head and dont care much about the amber channle this combo is an excellent choice. The cleans are great , the amp can put out some massive sound but still sound equally as great at lower volumes. The effects are an added little bonus plus the volume boost is great for solos . The amp really is an all in one package .

A couple of amp questions
by BigHow on Sun Jan 08, 2006 6:10 pm
I am on the hunt for an upgrade from my Marshall MG10 that I have been using and I have a few questions I was hoping some people could answer for me.

Has anyone used a Line 6 Flextone II or the Duoverb 212? How do they sound and are the amp models true to life?

Has anyone ever used a Johnson Marquis, either the JM 60 or 120?

Roland Cube 60.....

Behringer Vamp 210

Vox AD 50 VT.

All can be had for about the same price but no one in my area seems to carry anything but Crate, Fender, or Marshall. Any help would be appreciated.

Changing filter caps in Randall rg100es, should I?
by rgx612a on Sun Jan 08, 2006 10:44 pm
Well I got a 1988 randall rg100es, and they say you should change the filter caps every 15 years or so, and this amp is about 18 years old. It's got some hum to it, but that seems like a common problem with these amps, especially with high gain settings. If I do change them, do I just look for any capacitor with the right voltage or whatever?

Saw Sodom and Finntroll last night.
by transblueZ on Mon Jan 09, 2006 1:08 am
I have to say, it was a good time. There were 2 local acts that opened the gig (I didn't catch their names.) There were quite a few people at this gig (many more than I expected) and ran into some old friends - so that's always a good thing.

The 1st band was easily the WORST band I have ever seen live. They played little music. Most of their set was 2 guys in Ray Mysterio masks calling each other posers and doing bad fake wrestling moves on stage. Then when they did attempt to play - it didn;t seem like they were really doing the same thing, and they had some chick on stage beating a trash can lid with a license plate and doing ballerena moves. The most entertaining part of this band was listening to people in the crowd jeering them.

The 2nd band was MUCH better. 5 piece (2guitar [1 guy also sang]/bass/drums, keys) that were kind of a melodic death metal kinda thing. The singer/guitarist was good and had some pretty killer leads. The keys also added nicely to the mix. No real complaints, other than their songs were reeeeaaaallllly long. 4 or 5 tunes in a 30+ minute set if I remmeber correctly.

Finntroll was on next. I only have that Nattfodd cd and wasn't very impressed with it. They did put on a decent enough show, but it sounded like the same corny circus song with bad death metal vocals over and over again. I remember someone on here explaining the purpose of corpse paint and what not as being an attempt to show super human like qualities and to scare the crowd into thinking the band is of an unnatural evilness. I thought the Braveheart face/body paitings and black kilts to add to the clown like atmosphere. The crowd really seemed to dig it though, and I must say - quite a few people left when Finntroll was finished.

On to the headling act - SODOM. They played for just under an hour and a half (Fintroll also had the same length set.) Sodom seemed very happy to be in North America doing some shows. Also, it seemed that they were having a great time. The sound was better than I had hoped after reading another review of the band from the previous night's show. The crowd was also Very happy to see them. A great deal of folks having an excellent metal evening.

The only down part of the evening was a group of guys from Poland that came to the states to follow Finntroll during this mini tour had a run in with security. There was 1 rather large fellow that had quite a few beers in him that grabbed his 2 friends and started moshing it up a bit up by the bar (club is set up with an upper bar with a standing area and railing/down a step some tables/down a step and the pit area.) They ran into some folks and everything seemed ok. Security came up to check things out.....one thing led to another and the large man is being carried out with a bouncer on each limb and into the cold he went. When I left the gig he was still outsdie talking with 2 policemen. I hope he didn;t get arrested and can catch the rest of the show with his buddies (almost seemed like a foriegn prisoner exchange for Will in Mortician.)

All in all, it was a good night and fun show.
I'm sorry, but...

Who else is tired of hearing about Dimebag?

He's a great guitarist and all, and I like him, but it's all I ever really hear about when i'm on here, and it kind of bores me.
Did Charvel ever have a kelly styled body production model?
by transblueZ on Mon Jan 09, 2006 4:10 am
Just curious. I believe Charvel and Jackson were kinda the same thing at one time. I saw Sodom last night. The guitarist had a kelly shaped axe, but had the Charvel logo on the headstock (the one that looks like a guitar) 24 fret, dot inlays, bolt on, floyd.
I guess it could just be an oddball neck on an oddball body.
listen to yourself
by Dusty Rhodes on Mon Jan 09, 2006 6:45 am
It's been a while since I've posted anything on the Forum. Been busy with work and just trying to squeeze in some quality time in between. I was just on Harmony Central looking up a piece if gear that I just bought and a usual no matter what it is you have there is always this one cross-section of users who think what you just bought totaly sucks. You know what I'm saying. So far, everything that I have purchased I have been very pleased with. I won't say what those items are since this is not a review. I have come to the realization that your personal satisfaction and opinion is all that really matters. I believe that some people will try to have us believe that their opinion is the last word simply by knocking everyong else. Sort of like movie critics. Did you like the movie? If so, that's all that matters.
No, I don't really have a point here. I simply felt like making this comentary regarding product reviews. I love this site because I can ask for advice and get a wide varity of responses from which I can make my own assesment but I have made the decision to stop reading product reviews made by users like myself. If I need the performance stats. on a car I will log on to Road and Track where assesments are made by experts.
Look, all I am saying to you folks out there is to not get cought up in product review sites.
Listen to yourself. If you like it, great. If not, well try something else. Sound is very subjective and not all ears are created equal.
Anyway, that's all I really have to say simply because I felt I needed to.

which came first...the digital delay or the distortion
by Dusty Rhodes on Tue Jan 10, 2006 6:31 am
I'm looking for a general rule-of-thumb for connecting pedal effect boxes. Each time I add one to my chain of effects I have to move them around like a shell game to find the best sound. The four I am currently running are (from my guitar) Whammy Pedal, Digital Delay, Compressor/Sustain, Distortion. The Delay was the last one purchased so I put it on the end. Then, after moving it next to the Whammy I found it sounded much better. What is the rule for running a "chain"? Is there a rule?

Amp choice, is a stack really necessary?
by Anonymous on Tue Jan 10, 2006 6:42 pm
Hello bruthas and sistas!

I need a bit of advice on amplification. The usual trip to light-up GC and try out some amps has been stepped up due to my Chinchilla eating the cord to my Marshall practice amp. I live in an apartment so space is obviously an issue, as well as lugging equipment around so...

Is there a combo amp out there that can provide the sounds I am looking for? (too bad because I still have my Marshall 4x10 cab layin'around.) I haven't played live in some years, but I am playing more now than I did then, and am looking to do some serious recording. Now I have the ultimate guitars, the sound needs to be developed.

Here is some basic criteria...
1. Preferably under a grand! (100 watts is NOT necessary)
2. Killer metal tone with GOOD clean tones
3. Reliable

That's it, I would really appreciate some suggestions 'cause there are WAY too many damn choices!

Thanx!

WARHEAD X2 INFO?

Twisted Evil Hey People while since I posted!!
Have a question looking for advice! I have been a long time Marshall / tube amp guy and I am in the middle of recording a new Blacksmith cd, I came across someone with a Randall Warhead X2
plugged in , thought it sounded good! Could get this at a really good price / trade! Being that I am a Marshall guy, do you think its a mistake to go to a solid state amp like that!
Anybody have opinions/ info on the Warhead X2? thought it sounded really chunky. Any downfalls or negatives on this amp ?
solid state scares me, but this sounded good!

Alright, so come payday this Friday, I'm gonna be gettin' a wah pedal. I just have no idea which one. I've looked at a bunch online but have yet to try any out, so I'm really just looking for a lot of opinions. Sound clips would be AWESOME. Bascially, I'm looking for versatility, and smooth sounding tone.

And I forgot to hit add option for the last one, so if you know of any other good wah pedals, just post 'em.

by MLattack on Wed Jan 11, 2006 12:27 am
Check it out guys! I'm finally in a badass band! We just finished cutting our demo (4 songs) and it's picking up pretty fast with offers to play out of state and way out of town and we're only on our 4th gig with our 1st gig being an out of state one in Oklahoma. Shocked Maybe one day soon I'll be on the Dean Artist page Wink Anyway check out our songs! Look Away is our singing more mainstreamish I guess song and my personal favorite of these 4 tracks is The Path (really proud of that guitar solo too). Hopefully you guys will share your opinions with me positive or negative. It never hurts to hear the pros or cons. Thanks guys!

Triamp MK2 IS MINE!!
by east10538 on Wed Jan 11, 2006 2:36 am
I got the triamp mk2 for christmas, and let me say, this thing owns. I can get jazz clean to uberschall gain on this bad boy. 6 Channels, FX loop, midi capable, half power cut, this thing rocks the house. I got the celestion vintage 30 equipped cab for it to. The only problem is it is the loudest mofo on the planet. By far the best thing about this amp though is that the distortion is crushing at extremely low volumes. Amazing. ALL TUBE POWER!

Amp 1= Jazz clean
Amp 2= No breakup, but a little more oomph than amp 1.
Amp 3= Malcolm Young
Amp 4= Angus to Eddie Van Halen Sound
Amp 5= Later EVH, early Zakk Wylde
AMp 6= CRUSHING, eric johnson drive mixed with rusty cooley, just dial it in

I just heard that song for the first time in years. What a great track.

I know that Rik Emmet used Deans for awhile. Did he play a Dean on this track?

Who does he think he's fooling?....

Heres some guy I found. He's pretty good. But check this out....heres a video of him playing a a lefthanded les paul....
http://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=wurBTSD-rQg
He says that he is righthanded in the video summary,......but check out this video looks like the same guitar to me.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=TR5DEF_fKuM

I think he just mirrored the video. Heres more proof.
Lefthanded..... http://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=fBJpD1Uwte0 note it doesnt show the headstock to see a possible backwards logo. And the logo on his shirt looks kinda like a backwards addidas logo(cant tell kinda blurry.) Even if it wasnt an addidas logo, how many shirts have the logo on the rightside?
And heres the same guitar righthanded.... http://www.youtube.com/w/Me-playing-Dream-Theater%27s-Erotomania-main-solo?v=U7lYzYTJCu0&search=dream%20theater%20guitar%20rock%20metal%20shred%20prog
So is this guy trying to look better than he is, or does he actually have left and right handed matching guitars, or am I an idiot and misinterpreted the summary in the first video?

Sorry for the long post. I was just wandering what you guys thought. Very Happy (and yes, I am a loser with nothing better to do than watch guitar videos and try to disprove ones skills. Very Happy )

Ok A friend of mine has really got me thinking and I think that I need A less pointy but still very agresive guitar and we have been talking abot building An 8-string guitar for him and he likes this design BUT me I think it needs updateing to fit my style but yet still be the same basic design so im going to mod it and fix the upper horn

this is the plan!! bring down the upper horn and level it out to flow better
maybe add length to the whole thing and do A crisper edge maybe A bevel only if it fits the style and the guitar will be sold in 6,7,8 string with an alder body and finished in Flat Black!!
Since we are in a humorous mood around here lately....

Which ones I have?

Just took a PRS Santana SE in on trade and the customer said he bought it used with X2Ns already installed.

Well, I knew they were not X2Ns right away. He left and I opened it up to find "Bill Lawrence USA" on the back of each pup and absolutely nothing on the front. Grey lead for the neck and red for the bridge. I'm gonna assume these are not Bill/Becky version but are they L500XL, L or R?

I was planning to just dump the whole guitar on ebay starting pretty low and let 'er rip, but now I'm thinking of splitting this up and selling the guitar in one auction and the pups seperately. Confused

Don't want to start a flame war with this question just wanting to know which pups I have. That's all.

If this goes down hill I'll just delete my original post or ask Pete to delete the whole thread.

2004 White ML.....Now with PORN!!!
by Hort0n69 on Sat Jan 14, 2006 2:54 am
I Finally got a dean!!!! It came in today, its a 2004 White ML with black binding, I got off Ebay. Let me just say, it is easily the best guitar I have ever played. It rips!!!! The humbuckers are the best stockies I've ever heard .The inlays are beautiful, and the overall quality is awsome. Belive me when i say it makes my other guitars feel like toys Laughing (my washburn used to do that) I've had alot of trouble putting it down. Anyway what made this guitar 10 times cooler than it already was, is that the previous owner routed it out for a original floyd rose. I fell a little bad though, cause I was gonna buy a tbz MLF from Tim at center stage, but both me and my brother decided that this was just to cool to pass up.

Image
Me and my brothers collection.

Image
THere she is!!! I was so nervous all day in school, cause it was Friday the 13th, and UPS was delivering it, but luckily it got delivered fine.

Image
Original Floyd kicks ass, and the route isn't the best but its sits straight and stays in tune too. lol after using the Original floyd, i dont think i can settle for less. Very Happy

Image
As i said the route isnt the best but it works.

Image
I finally got my WINGS!!! Twisted Evil

Image
The Humbuckers are amazing for stock ones. And the black binding is insane....Its got it up the neck too.

Image
A little EVH touch i added. Very Happy

Image
Another full body shot. At first when i got it and figured out it was saggy, i was a little disapointed, but it looks so much better in person. All my friends say its to big for me (im only 5'4/5'5) but i don't care cause its badass!! And ass for future guitars, i only see deans. Smile

Well thats all i got for now, hopefully next week ill get some in action pictures at band practice. As of now i gotta play it. Very Happy Twisted Evil Cool

NEW RAZORBACK PAINT JOBS!!!!!
by \.../_METAL_\.../ on Sat Jan 14, 2006 10:34 pm
Well you don't get to see them, I just needed your attention. As some of you know I put down a deposit on a two tone, because I'm a dumbass and couldn't wait untill NAMM to see if there will be new paintjobs. The thing I was wondering is, if there are new paintjobs(I'm hopping for diamond plating) how long would it take them to get on the shelves? I know the main thing delaying the razorbacks so far was getting the shapes into the computers or whatever. Now that they have that solved, how long will it take to get the new paintjobs into production? Thanks in advance.

BTW, Harley you've got a PM.

Any of you guys know of good places to find powermetal tabs? All of the bands I like are extremely hard to find.

EDIT: I'm also looking for "Wolf and Raven" by Sonata Arctica. And if Mark would be so kind, I would love if he would PM with a tab for "Frozen in Fear". Laughing I love that song...

JIMI HENDRIX Psychedelic Flying V

JIMI HENDRIX Psychedelic Flying V Guitar Unveiled At CES - Jan. 15, 2006

The Gibson Custom Shop wowed crowds at CES 2006 with the launch of the new "Inspired By" guitar series and its debut guitar, the stunning Jimi Hendrix Psychedelic Flying V (see photo at this location). A meticulous recreation of the mysterious Flying V that Hendrix used on tour in Europe in 1967 and 1968, the guitar features exacting reproductions of Jimi's own hand-painted designs that graced the original. Originally done in what appears to be nail polish, the swirling, psychedelic designs have been painstakingly rendered by artist Bruce Kunkel in close conjunction with the Custom Shop.

"I would never have come up with the images that Jimi painted," Kunkel said. "They were totally personal and came directly from his spirit."

In addition to the care taken with the artwork, the genius luthiers of the Gibson Custom Shop have built the guitar with the exacting standards and attention to detail that have earned them the reputation of building the finest guitars in the world. The result, an instrument of unsurpassed playability and tone, is an original work of art that can be beautifully displayed or proudly played. The Custom Shop will soon debut other guitars in the "Inspired By" series, including the Peter Frampton Les Paul Special.

something a little off topic
by j.arledge on Mon Jan 16, 2006 5:28 am
i have been thinking about this for awhile and thought I’d see what I’d from all of you.

Our existence is only defined by what we can see, test, or go by on a leap of faith . All these have some root in a prior action that is defined by one another . Have you ever thought about what things could really be like beyond the above listed definitions that we hold for our "Reality" . What if life (reality) isn't a smoke screen . To think that as i type this , there are any number of possible thing occurring that i know nothing of . Almost a Matrix scenario .

Another disturbing detail to this is that our memory lies to us. I was watching a show about memory on the science channel, and it made the simple statement that our memory isn't always trustable. It is true or otherwise we'd never forget anything . Memory can fashion its self in such a way that we may remember one thing but in reality the actual thing we are remembering happened very differently. My point is that if we can't remember our past what assures us that we have ever really existed.

I found out how time travel is "theoretically" possible .

am example .

you have a beam of light traveling at the normal speed that light would. Next to the beam of light you have a person on a motorcycle. now lets say that somehow the motorcycle could travel as fast as the speed light . So assume they both take off at the exact same time starting at the speed of light . From an observer standing on the side lines the beam of light and motorcycle would be at dead even but from the guy on the motorcycles perspective the beam of light would race on ahead of him as though he where stationary. Not possible you say . Yes it is . Light originates from every point of the beam into the eye therefore it is originating at the very end of the beam seeming to shot forward . I can't get into Einstein’s theory of relativity and too much into the notion that space is curved but i told you that to tell you this. Time travel has already occurred .
There was a group of researchers that borrowed 4 atomic clocks from the navy . 2 where sent on a plane trip round the world and the other 2 remained at a fixed location. The two that where on the plane showed up a few billionths of a second behind the ones that where stationary. Meaning that they had jumped forward in time very slightly. Using the mathematics behind the theory of relativity the mathematical time and actual time the clocks where of was the same.
So if time is able to be manipulated what else is out there that is left un-touched by a human’s perspective on reality?

I recently bought an Ibanez RG1570(L) and I got it in today.
I know its not a dean but this thing plays incredibly well!
It has probably the lowest action I have ever felt. The neck is really thin. It has surprisingly great sustain for a bolt-on. The pickups arn't the best for metal, the bridge is a little bit bassy, but all three of em sound great for shredding(thats what I bought it for anyways)
The only thing I was disapointed with was the fact that the guy I ordered it from didnt send a trem arm. WTF! Evil or Very Mad I e-mailed him to ask why not, but I havnt got a reply yet. So I'm not sure how well it stays in tune, or how good the edge pro trem is at all. I tried the arm from my FBD but it was smaller so I didnt want to mess up the threads inside. (I'm not sure but, is there threads inside there? My first edge trem)
Also the box was damaged when I got it(Fedex) So I checked it out, and the High E string was broken. Confused (arnt you supposed to de0tune it before shipping?)So I had to stick a new one on before I could test it for-real.
Anyways It plays awesomely! Here are some crappy photos. I cleaned it before I snapped them, but it still looks dirty. (lint)

Steelers Fan Has Heart Attack After Bettis Fumble
by JACKHOLE on Tue Jan 17, 2006 8:24 pm
Associated Press
Posted: 1 hour ago

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Talk about a heart-stopping game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts.

Fifty-year-old Terry O'Neill of Pittsburgh says he was watching the game at a bar when he had a heart attack just seconds after Steelers player Jerome Bettis' fumble at the two-yard line late in the fourth quarter.
The play allowed the Colts to have a renewed chance at winning the game.

O'Neill says Bettis is his hero, and he was upset with the idea the player might have ended his career with an error.

"I wasn't upset that the Steelers might lose," O'Neill told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "I was upset because I didn't want to see him end his career like that. A guy like that deserves better. I guess it was a little too much for me to handle."

Doctors are planning to implant a pacemaker in O'Neill to help control an irregular heartbeat along with prescribing him medication to deal with hypertension.

When asked how he was feeling, O'Neill told the Tribune-Review: "The Steelers won the game and I'm still alive, so I guess I'm doing pretty good."

From now on, O'Neill says he will probably just take it easy and watch future games at home.

Has anyone stayed in the Bahamas lately?
by clmazza7 on Wed Jan 18, 2006 5:41 pm
55,000 Customer IDs Stolen from Bahamas Hotel

Travellers who stayed at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas should keep a close eye on their bank statements in the months ahead. The hotel has admitted to an apparent database break-in in which personal information for 55,000 guests may have been stolen, including credit card and bank account numbers.

The resort said it was notifying affected customers in writing so that they can "take steps to protect themselves from possible identity fraud."

Kerzner International Ltd., which operates the 2,000-room "ocean-themed" resort on Paradise Island, reported the theft last week in a U.S. regulatory filing. An internal investigation revealed that the information had been stolen from a database of Atlantis customers.

The company said it couldn't discuss the matter further because the break-in is the subject of a criminal investigation.

The information stolen included names, addresses, credit card numbers, social security numbers and driver's license numbers and bank account numbers. Approximately 55,000 customers may have been affected, the resort company said.

Kerzner is offering affected customers a free credit monitoring service for one year. It hired an outside security company to help resolve the incident and has notified law enforcement officials in the Bahamas and the U.S., who are helping investigate.

As of Wednesday, the resort had no evidence that the stolen information has been used for fraud or identity theft, said Kerzner spokeswoman Lauren Snyder.

The authorities investigating the matter include the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice, she said. As of Jan. 6, the resort had no evidence that the stolen information had been used for fraud or identity theft, it said.

Hi guys. I was actually looking for some site or something that would help teach people some neat stage tricks. Like I know a few stage tricks, but you cant really learn how to do them without seriously destroying your guitar the first time if you dont know what your doing.

I LOVE Unearth, and some things they do are insane.

I want to learn how to do that trick where you flip your guitar and it goes around you and comes back pretty badly. Also I've seen guitarists just jump into the front of the crowd, and kinda half crowd surf/get rebounded back, its insane. You'd have to see the video's to know what I mean.

I have a Fender Squier that is really crappy, worth maybe $300 at most, and no one wants to buy it, I've tried endlessly to sell it but have had no luck. I was thinking of hooking up my metal strap locks to it and using it as a stage props practice guitar or to just screw around on.

What is your take on this guys? and does anyone know where/how to learn neat guitar tricks?

discuss

Suicide City
by TheOnlyFactor on Thu Jan 19, 2006 10:29 am
Ok so I just checked out Billy from Biohazard's new band, Suicide City.
The name alone should be a big giant red flag. GOD AWFUL. I guess he got tired of being a broke bastard and wanted to write some stuff that may get popluar real quick. Their look reminds me of Bleeding Through and all that garbage. The music, is just crap.

Suicidecity.com is their site, and their myspace link is on there for the music. Very big let down on this. I figure it'll make a lot of old school Bio fans pretty mad...
I'm not oldschool, but I'm pretty upset with it. Meh...

Pickups Question
by Anonymous on Thu Jan 19, 2006 4:44 pm
Howdy-

I'm looking to replace the pickups in my FBD ML... just grown a little tired of the scooped sound the Dimebucker seems to automatically give me. I'm wondering if anyone has some suggestions for a high-output passive pickup with a better midrange. Active suggestions are welcome too, though it would mean more work on my part, which I hate! Very Happy

Thanks in advance!

Epiphone Galaxy 10 Extreme Makeover
by Mike9 on Thu Jan 19, 2006 10:55 pm
Well I just can't leave anything alone in my quest for tone so I took my new Epi Galaxy 10 amp apart and turned into a tone beast Twisted Evil

I built a new cab 20" x 20" x 11-1/2" from 3/4" lumber core luan ply. I splined mitered corners for strength, made the speaker baffle and back plate from 1/2" luan plywood and covered the case and back in a buttery tolex. The front trim panel is 3/8" Baltic birch ply with an expanded metal grill over regular window screen sandwiched in between. Sort of a nice classic Vox look. I had retubed earlier with vintage Mullard 12ax7 and CBS 6L6GC with silicone dampers to keep things quiet. I scored an Eminence Legend 122 12" Alnico speaker and installed it with "T" nuts and machine screws. Man this thing has some sweet sweet tone now. The extra room in the cab and the lumber core construction make it very resonant as opposed to the dead sounding particle board in the old one. It weighs about the same as the old one too and it's at one and a half times the area: 1 cu.ft / 2.6 cu.ft. Cool

So, are we not getting a Black Gold Caddy afterall? No BG Caddy in the new pics, no BG Caddy listed on the electrics page (says V, ML & Z). Is the 1980 supposed to be the replacement?

Of course, I don't know why I'm asking...I won't be getting one anyway, unfortunately.

WINTER NAMM HERE WE COME !!!!
by Brave Dave on Fri Jan 20, 2006 6:07 am
We leave at 7:30 in the morning for our 4th Winter Namm show. This year looks to be one of the best considering all of the new models. I had no idea there were this many new models to choose from. There seem to be a lot of questions about the new models and I will do my best to get all of the info I can. We are staying at a different hotel this year and hopefully they will have internet connections. If so, I will post pics as soon as possible.
Updated 2006 NAMM pics! Woohoo!
by formula73 on Fri Jan 20, 2006 6:27 am
Well, I'm sure Brave Dave is going to put up some better pics in a few days but I wanted to throw what I have on here so far. There's a bunch of killer new stuff and man, do I wish I had more $$$. Today I only got a couple pics of some of the new stuff(pointies pretty much), but I'll have more tomorrow night! I apologize for the quality of a few of the pics; I'm no professional.

That said, here we go!

You have to see this in person! I don't even know how to describe it; it looks like the shape was cut out of a 140 year old rebel flag and glued to the face! It kicks arse!

Image

This is even crazier than the Rebel. One day *sigh*

Image

I think I just threw up in my mouth:

Image
Shocked Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Dime's guitars were here again in force with the DOF, DFH, FBD, Camo, and proto Rust Razorback. Man, until you see them in person, you have no idea just how trashed they were. The routes for the Floyds are absolutely horrible (the FBD made me queezy) and while both have had the headstocks broken off, it looks like the FBDs led a much easier life than the DFH! I tried to get a pic of the DFH's homemade volute, but the angle was wrong and the camera focused on the background. I guess I just moved photographing the body. That bare patch above the strings isn't just bare, it's actually missing wood. It's deeeeeeeeeep. Lotsa miles on that one.

Image

Image

Cool inlays! I never noticed the production models were different:

Image

Here's the story on these guitars. http://www.deanguitars.com/sixstringmp/ I think that's really cool, and some of those guys are amazingly artistically inclined!

Image

Image

Image

This one's going to give me nightmares:

Image

Image

Image

Wicked awesome. That Razorback up there behind the bike matches the paint and is flawless, like glass. Awesome.

Image

And of course, the obligatory people pics! The Dean girls:

Image

The man:

Image

And the still super - hot Nancy Wilson, who seems to have gotten lost far, far away from the Epiphone booth. She can dream, right? Wink

Image[/i]

Sunday, 1am: Well, I'm alive. That's about all I can say! It's been fun and I wish I could hang around for Sunday but the Navy says I gotta go, so I gotta go. Probably a good idea that I came home though; I'm wearing the same clothes as yesterday and I smell like a rock star. After hitting up, oh let's see, Dean, Elliott, Buddy Blaze, Kerry King, and Vinnie (and that's all I can really remember), Randy (Bucketass) was kind enough to give me a fold out couch to sleep on! He, I, and John from Cheva were chillin all night. It was a freakin crazy time. Anyhow, on with the pics!

The nicest guy in the world and an even bigger guitar geek than me (and that's saying something)!

Image

These things are amazingly playable and beyond freakin' loud. I really dig them. For the price, they're phenomenal.

Image

I've heard some of you don't dig it, but in person, the V headstock really looks good on this thing! I personally think pretty much every frickin Dean ought to have one; I mean wasn't that the defining feature when they were new?

Image

This is a super cool guitar. It don't get much simpler than this:

Image

What a pimp suit, huh?

Image

I'm a midget:

Image

Not even Dean - related, but this is the Kent Armstrong and he's a silly bastard! Cool dude!

Image

The Chopper's matching Razorback:

Image

...and who's this sexy beast showing us the back of the neck?

Image

These 2 aren't new but man, are they frackin beautiful up close:

Image

Image

"Wrote a song about it wanna hea it hea it go"

Image

The only acoustic you can look mean while playing:

Image

Yep, he's still kickin and I met him smoking. To think some people say cigarettes shorten your lifespan. Pshaw.

Image

I feel bad for this dude because he was a 'featured artist' at this booth, but in actuality the thing was pretty cool and he tore it up. I had to go get a picture with a Keytar, though I'll regret it in the morning:

Image

Of course we have a hotel pic of Randy:

Image

The Dean party on Friday night:

If you don't know who this is I'll slap you:

Rudy Farking Schenker

Image

THE infamous Buddy Blaze:

Image

Fearless Leader:

Image

From me to him: "AB rocks but Creed sucked ass." "I know."

Image

What a lineup, huh?

Image

And the Piece de Resistance:

Image

Absolutely postively tore the fark up!!! Elmo wouldn't hold a beer in the picture. I tried.

After reading countless posts here and reading several different things on the two different companies websites that are selling bill lawrence pickups, I can't trust sending my money to either of them so i'm going to just purchase a seymour duncan dimebucker to replace my stock dean pickups. I have one in my dime stealth and am quite pleased with it. Although it will cost me more money, i already know it sounds badass.

Sorry to start another bill lawrence related topic.

P.S. Seriously i'm sorry about starting another one of these topics

These Could be Cool...
by JACKHOLE on Sat Jan 21, 2006 12:43 am
Seymour did the Dimebucker thing last year and the success has been phenomenal. Now, Megadeath's Dave Mustaine, a long time SH-4 JB model user, has collaborated with Seymour and the gang to create his new, upcoming signature series pickup set. Check this out: it's their first 9V active preamp, pickup system!!! Based on the SH-2 Jazz and SH-4 JB model pickups (Seymour's favorites), the Dave Mustaine Livewire set keeps all the tonal response and dynamic feel from these classics, but adds 25db worth of extra gain and extremely high headroom. In addition, these pickups are quiet due to all class A discrete circuitry. They look cool, too. Featuring unique black nickel plated tops comprised of nickel silver substrate material to minimize tonal colorization; the Mustaine’s really are striking. (We’ll have pictures coming soon.) So, all you Metal Heads out there, these are the pickups you’ve been waiting for!!! Available mid-February. Set includes two Mustaine humbuckers with all the necessary mounting hardware, including pots, jack and battery clip.
Korean Hardtail - pickups and bridge?
by A_X_E on Sat Jan 21, 2006 1:24 am
I am quickly getting the idea that a few upgrades will take my 2004 Korean Hardtail over the top.

1) Does anyone know what pickups are in this? Are the Dean pickups?

2) What have others replaced them with, I want to retain the warmth but clear it up. A tad more spakle. It has a unique tone that is different from my SD's and I want to exploit that.

3) I am thinking of upgrading the nut and it appears there are two choices here: graphite or bone. I have no idea what the tone consequeces are Smile

4) A Tonepros bridge, has anyone found this to make a difference?

Thanks!

anybody own a 79 V and a Time capsule V?
by New Breed on Sat Jan 21, 2006 2:37 am
im trying to decide whether to buy a 79 V and fit a floyd rose and have it custom painted, or buy a floyded time capsule, the problem is im in university and so im always broke, so even tho the changes to the 79 will cost a lot to do, they will still work out cheaper than the time capsule, plus theres no way im going near the paint job on a time capsule. im hoping someone can give me details regarding how big a difference in quality there is between the 2, as the only usa models ive played, i havent had a good enough play with them to gather any opinion on them.
thanks in advance.

the night that was, my 18th party
by Sharky on Sat Jan 21, 2006 2:08 pm
it was a good night all up, the chicks were hot and the booze was plentiful. best part of the night was getting everyone to sing along to the chorus of pantera - walk....im sure we nearly blew the roof of my house.

but the fun didnt end when the party did (and this is where the story gets really good). there was about 6 of us left at about 4am so we went into a real estate that is in the process of been built. well one of my friends had bought along some stuff and made a bomb. he climbed up to the top of some concrete pillar and lit the fuse and we ran back a bit to observe it. well when it blew it was f**king massive, so big that a paddy-wagon that was patrolling the area saw it and sped up to our location. at this stage i was pretty out of it so i didnt bother running, but my other friends did and got busted...while trying to climb a fence.

when we all gathered the cops saw a brown patch on the ground and said "is that where the explosive was", we all said no and the cop responded "oh bullsh!t, i'm not an idiot"...so he made us all walk over to this patch and one of my friends (who was also pretty drunk) said "umm, its a soil patch dude".

after that we showed him where we really let the bomb off, then the cops proceeded to take our information. when the cop asked for my name i said it (which is Greg Norman - same as the golfer), and he looked at me and said "oi don't f**k with me, i've had to deal with people's sh!t all night long"....well after much argueing he finally accepted my name was greg norman, and then one of my other friends (who is black) walked over and the cop said "your name better not be tiger woods"

they said they could arrest us under some explosives act...but decided to let us off with a warning - and our names are in the suspect list so if anyone blows something up, the cops call us up and we have to have an alibi for where we were.

so all in all, i got more tanked than the polish calvary Laughing and nearly got arrested...a bloody good way to celebrate an 18th.

thanks for reading, cheers.
